Well, you've read the notes, the notes were typed whilst the clock ticked, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - the clock is ticking and the cows are mooing and never the Mark Twain shall meet.

Thanks to all H/Ks for your slapstick suggestions yesterday.  You have added to my "must see" list!

DR FJL - thank you for the theatre report. Glad you enjoyed, and that you had a chance to catch up with the author and star.

DR JoseSPiano - thanks for the all the lovely photos.
The Great Disappearing Pollini...is that like The Flying Wallendas?

***continued back recovery vibes***

***patience vibes***
for DR S Woody White
***Vista vibes***
for DR JMK

Ye Olde Tag Sale is concluded, and was a great success.  But the effort left me too tired to attend the Derby Party which had been on my calendar.

After a nap, I watched Marnie, which I had never seen.  Apart from the bad matte job, I enjoyed it very much.  And that score!

Well, off to walk the dog, and then...much singing.

Smooches, kids!

Casey would waltz
With a strawberry blonde,
Ignoring the BARRATRY from the orchestra
That was demanding they pay their wages,
Rather than taking those demands to the nightclub
Which was their rightful employers.

I am up far too early this morning.

By necessity.

I am scheduled to start work at seven-fifteen AM, which I am taking as a hint that I may be the first of the checkers to assist our customers in the use of our new self-checking machines.

It is daunting, to say the least.

But, since it is so early in the morning that I'll be starting, we shouldn't have too many customers at first.

Most of those will be purchasing newspapers or donuts, or both.

The madness of larger purchases will come later.

Sunday morning greetings!  About an hour ago I saw DH Richard off on his quarterly trip to Wisconsin's Nashotah House (http://www.nashotah.edu).  On his next trip (late July/early August), he'll have a traveling companion - Moi!

Last evening DS Rob and my mother-in-law accompanied Richard to Evening Prayer in Cincinnati, where he was confirmed into the Anglican Province of America.  Afterwards we and 6 others went to a lovely dinner at The National Exemplar (http://www.nationalexemplar.com) in The Mariemont Inn.

Does anyone know about the new warnings from the weather service? Yesterday the weather channel kept saying we are in a PDS - Particularly Dangerous Situation.  I'm not sure if that is new NOAA speak or just Weather Channel speak

DR Sandra - I have ridden on busses in Iowa.   When I was in college I used to ride every day in Iowa City, that was a good system.  I haven't ridden the bus in Sioux City, but it looks pretty good and it seems to have a rep for being on time.

Well, Friday we did notice a bus going the opposite way the route runs near my house, but there may have been a reason for that who knows

One of my favorite bus jokes was on I LOVE LUCY.  Lucy and Ricky go to the train station to pick up Lucy's mother, and she never shows up.  They are frantic and return home hours later to find her at their apartment.  Mrs. Magillicuddy's explanation is outrageous, of course....but Lucy interrupts her.

Lucy:  All right...all right.  But mother how did you get here?

Mrs. Magillicuddy:  I took a bus and the driver let me off right at your front door.

Lucy:  But, mother, the bus doesn't come down our street.

Mrs. Magillicuddy:  THAT'S what the bus driver tried to tell me!

And DR ELMORE's post from yesterday reminded me of

THE FULLER BRUSH GIRL with Miss Lucille Ball!

Laurel & Hardy's BIG BUSINESS is also a fine slapstick comedy.

And the link we had a few weeks ago to a Three Stooges Pie Fight was pretty funny....

Good morning, all!

After analyzing things as I see them, I've decided that I am officially in depression of some sort. Between the current bad back, my dad's death, frustration with the Toyland Project and the Macbeths, and the wish for something exciting or positive to give my energy a kick, it's hard to determine wherein lies the source.  I have no urge to get out of bed to accomplish much of anything and I'm out of sorts about everything.  I apologize for being bad company.

Perhaps after several cups of coffee I will have found my sense of humor and appreciation for what I do have.  Stay tuned.

(Sorry, but I made it big to get your attention).

The BRANDO documentary is being reshown this week on TCM. If I remember correctly, it's going to be Friday afternoon at 5:15 p.m., but check your Tivo for exact date. I certainly plan to set my DVR to pick it up.

It looked from the listings like they were going to show the entire documentary in one big block.

Jrand - Re an unvarnished report on the play :)   - I just didn't want to give away any of the surprises, because I thought they're important to the impact of Tom's piece, and I'll say I've had moments even since seeing the play yesterday where a couple of the play's observations have come back to haunt me, although thankfully in a  less life-impacting way than for the play's characters.

I have FOR YOUR EYES ONLY cued up in the player to watch this afternoon. This will finish off the Ultimate Edition boxed set I bought specifically to get some of the other films in the box. I don't like Roger Moore as Bond much, but this is one of his better efforts.

I would like to finish WILL & GRACE as I'm on the fourth disc now, and I don't think there are many episode left. (Of course, there will be special features on this last disc, but I have no idea what they will be apart from a gag reel.)

I'd like to watch that DREAMGIRLS documentary, too.

Of course, after reading DR Ron Pulliam's description of two of those Tyrone Power films, I'm anxious to crack that box open and get to watching some of those as well, but there is just SO much to see!

When I was writing about THE BREAK UP last night, I forgot to mention what a grand cast it has. In addition to the two stars, there were the always wonderful Judy Davis, Vincent D'Onofrio, Ann-Margret, Jason Bateman, Ivan Sergei, Jon Favreau, John Michael Higgins, and Peter Billingsley (from A CHRISTMAS STORY fame, all grown up). Watching all these pros work together so well was one of the more enjoyable aspects of the movie.

Larry, my best hugs, vibes, and wishes to you, my friend.  However, if you are in depression they probably don't meant that much to you, other than letting you know how many people love you.  Perhaps you should discuss this with your doctor.  There is nothing wrong with taking anti-depressants.  Actually they rank up there as one of the miracles of modern medicine.

Good Morning!

I'm up, and I've just finished my oatmeal (sprinkled with flax and pumpkin seed), as well as an egg white omelet... well, just egg whites, no filling.  But I did cook them.  Very healthy.  Even with bit of butter I cooked them in.

And shortly, I shall run down to the corner to get a copy of today's Times, and then have a cup of coffee.

DR elmore...

You need to head down to Levain right now and get a box of cookies, a loaf of their sourdough/rasisin/walnut loaf, and their cinnamon-butter brioche!  Nothing like a carb-coma to take your mind off of things.  ;)

Seriously...  I know you'll come out of whatever funk you're in right now.  You've been running non-stop since you got back from Ohio, and it sounds like your body and mind are telling you to take a day off, a mental health day.  No Toyland, No MacBeths, No Big Fat Conductor.  You need some time to process everything that has happened without having to deal with other things.  Maybe you can make that day today.  Or tomorrow.  Just listen to some music, watch a DVD or two, watch a VHS tape or two ;), and have a nice dinner.

Be well and stay sane.

For DEAR DR LARRY / ELMORE3003 / ELMO / FRIEND .......

I hold very good, warm, and loving thoughts for you Larry. And don't think that there is anything "wrong with you" for feeling your feelings.  They are your's, and they are real for you.  They are not weakness, or lack of fortitude, or any other crap like that.  Don't be afraid to talk to a good qualified therapist or counselor, and to bring your feelings of sadness and depression out into the open.

It isn't always easy to have to deal with things as they actually are, and to try to stay within the day we are actually in right now.  But it is much better than letting the mind take you off into past darkness, or to an imagined and  dreaded future that hasn't even happened yet.

I only share this with you, as a way of keeping myself reminded.

I also send you a very big hug Lar.

Thank you all, DRs, for the kind vibes.  I will be okay, and I'm actually making an effort this afternoon to accomplish something positive since I spent most of yesterday feeling sorry for myself.  I can indulge every so often but I cannot let it take over my life.  I send virtual hugs to all of you for your kindness.

DR Jose, if I had my way, I'd camp at Levain's doorstep, if only for the cinnamin brioche and the oatmea raisin cookies, but I'm trying to remove pounds.  The one good thing was the positive blood pressure report this week. They're heavenly cookies, I must admit.

I think I'll take a short walk to the market for celery.

HHW BOOK CLUB - MONTHLY NOTICE

Vampires can be your friends (http://www.presstelegram.com/entertainment/ci_5828395)

VAMPIRES. You gotta love 'em!

Everyone loves to write about these creatures of the dark, and a surprising number of authors make their living from them, if you'll excuse the pun.

Jim Butcher battles them in his best-selling Harry Dresden series; I'm now working my way through book six of the nine-part series. It's taken over my literary life for the past month or so.

So soon I'll be trolling for another vampire series to sink my teeth in, if you'll excuse another pun. And I'm seriously considering the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris.

Her new book, "All Together Dead," just came out this month, and The Dallas Morning News calls Harris' work a "deliciously fiendish ... increasingly riotous series."
As I understand it, Stackhouse is a telepathic Louisiana barmaid who has befriended a group of vampires. This is a complete turnaround from the Dresden series, where Harry is alway duking it out with the vamps.

After taking time off to have children, Harris decided to write a mystery series about a Georgia librarian, Aurora Teagarden. Her book "Real Murders" won her an Agatha nomination.

"Dead Until Dark" broke the boundaries between genres - it was neither a traditional mystery, nor pure science fiction or romance.

But it was a great adventure, and readers enjoyed the stories about Sookie Stackhouse, the telepathic barmaid and friend to vampires and werewolves.

A book about a Lady Librarian Detective - Marion meets Agatha?

I can't resist - I put both Real Murders and Dead Until Dark in my Amazon cart!

Tour reveals shady side of City of Angels (http://www.presstelegram.com/news/ci_5829346)

Quote
Tourism: It's Black Dahlia and beyond for intrepid visitors.

LOS ANGELES - A dismembered wannabe starlet. A girl buried under her family's home. A rattlesnake used as a weapon.

The scenes of those crimes are stops on a series of Southern California bus tours that eschew the usual stars' homes and theme parks to offer passengers a peak at the region's dark side.

"They're aimed at the history geek sort of people," said Kelly Kuvo, who wears a black veil and other vintage accouterments during the trips she leads for tour company Esotouric.

The company's "crime bus" tours plumb the grisly, blood-soaked pasts of now quiet Southern California neighborhoods and nondescript strip malls.

"When people die in a place, it does change that place forever," said Esotouric guide and co-founder Kim Cooper. "Just because the people wandering around the neighborhood may not be aware of it, it doesn't mean it's not a good idea for people who are interested in history to revive those memories."

Esotouric's most popular tour explores 1947 Los Angeles by zeroing in on the murder of Elizabeth Short - a.k.a. "Black Dahlia" - who came to Hollywood in search of fame but wound up the victim of an infamous unsolved murder.

A tour that revisits the life and literature of Raymond Chandler, whose fictional characters inhabit the region's underworld, was added to the menu of crime junkets when the company was started earlier this year.

I am about to review my presentation for Wednesday morning. It's all finished, it just needs a timing and I need to become more comfortable with the revisions. Since it's Powerpoint and I've printed out the notes pages I treat it as a script and a staged reading. I can't be off book (it's 120 pages of just me but some of the pages/slides are very short with one sentence to describe what's on screen) but I want to be comfortable enough that if I get a question during the slide show I can answer and then return to where I left off. There will be time after the presentation for questions but there may be questions during also.

I just read an article about this site in the Times, and I have a feeling some Hainsies and Kimlets may be interested in this site.  For anyone who misses "MST3K" - and you know who you are - you might want to check out the following:

Or go directly to RiffTrax.com[/ulr], where you can sample commentaries for..

OH!

Last week, two interesting things happened...

1) The NY Post went up from 25 cents to 50 cents. -For some that's interesting, for some others, not so much.

However...

2) The Ollie's in Times Square has shuttered.  Apparently, the Carmine's next bought it out and will be expanding into the space.  I came across a new Ollie's on 42nd between 9th and 10th, next to West Bank Cafe.  I almost went to dinner the other night, but when I walked in, the place looked a bit smaller, a bit more fancy, and the prices were a little higher too.  -Although, they have expanded their menu to include some more "real Chinese" items.  I'm just wondering how they're going to be now that they're not off the main drag (Broadway).  No more five minute walk to the theatre after a dinner there - unless you're heading across the street to Theatre Row or Playwrights Horizons.

I guess we Hainsies and Kimlets will now have to find a new "good ole stand-by" place to eat in Times Square.  :-\

Too bad about Ollies. I'm not a fan of Carmine's. The space is already cavernous and you can't hear someone if they are sitting next to you. It's not a place for conversation and two people can't eat there easily since it's a "family style" restaurant (meaning portions are based on groups of four or more). The new Junior's isn't bad except that sometimes it's very, very crowded. Another one bites the dust.

I had a wonderful time viewing stuff this afternoon. I began with the last disc in the WILL & GRACE set. The episodes remaining in season 6 consisted of two that continued the story arc with Will's new boy friend Vince. What a shame that Vince wasn't introduced earlier in the series since Bobby Canavalle added so much to each episode he appeared in as Vince. And once Debra Messing left the show on maternity leave with three episodes remaining, the writers were foolish not to make those Will-Vince centered stories. In fact, Vince didn't appear at all in those last three episodes.

The last two episodes of the season involved the hastily put together wedding between Karen and Lyle Finster (John Cleese). Several guest stars were present in these shows including Jennifer Lopez and the always welcome Leslie Jordan, but with Grace missing and Vince absent, Will was left with little to do.

The outtake reel was fun, especially certain scenes having multiple takes due to lines blown, breaking character, or technical foul ups. The theme featurettes simple lump jokes around certain themes and since I'd watched the entire season in less than a week, I didn't need to revisit them so soon, even though some were howlingly funny.

I spent the last two hours exploring the special features Blu-ray disc on DREAMGIRLS. How great that the documentary was also shot in high definition, so the entire set ended up being a high definition experience, and the "making of" documentary was excellent. Sadly, while the Broadway show is talked about by Loretta Divine and Hinton Battle (who was the first replacement as Jimmy Early after Clevant Derricks left), one misses the participation of other major movers in that original company. Of course, Michael Bennett has been gone a long time (is Michael Peters also dead now?), but I wish the original show could have been represented a little more fully.

But every aspect of the 61 day shoot is covered in pretty rich detail. Yes, everyone loves one another and there didn't seem to be any problems along the way according to this film. Still, behind the scenes is always fun to see, and this gives you loads of that.

No.... dear Esteemed and studly BK wants quantity AND quality;  you should see what he and I (collectively) can do to a platter of shrimp cocktail shrimp !

That clock states I have until Saturday, July 19, 2036.

Mom seems to be doing ok.  In fact, I have to meet with the social worker to find out what we are going to do.  She needs 24 hour care so I don't think she will be coming home but she can't stay at the Hospice house for very much longer.

Now I'm scared and worried about how much this is all going to cost.

DR Elmore, I'm sorry to hear your not feeling well.

I have to have something to read while the other 10-minute plays are being done and I am stuck in the booth, and I have really been enjoying the recent anniversary issue of ROLLING STONE. I haven't read that magazine in years, but rather than pat iself on the back too much, it just features solid indepth interviews with a lot of '60s  luminaries: Dylan, Jagger, McCartney, Nicholson, McGovern, Mailer, Jane Fonda, etc. Collectively, it gives a fascinating glimpse at the zeitgeist of the '60s, but also the failure of that promise. It is enlightening and depressing in equal turns.

Boy, this is slow going around these parts.  Okay, here is a question or a subject or a something:

If you could throw a cream pie in the face of some celebrity (with no fear of arrest or reprisal); who would it be and why?

Tom Cruise, because he is a pompous ass.

Rosie O'Donnell, because if Tom Cruise were a lesbian, he'd be Rosie O'Donnell.  The switch is in the on position, but no one bothered to screw in a light bulb.

Please, dear Music Guy, do not confuse Log Cabin's being Republican as meaning that we support everyone who claims to be Republican.  We certainly do not.  We're far more subversive than that - we want to take the party back from the radical right, and bring it back to it's grassroots centerist heritage.  That's the real reason the radical right refuses to deal with us - we scare the holy sh!t out of them!

Before that, there was workage.

Today was the first day with the self-serve registers working.  There are a few glitches - why the heck is zucchini listed on the computer as "green squash," which is confusing to the customers.  For that matter, our mini hard rolls aren't even listed, and a lot of our elderly customers love those rolls.

Overall, the customers still seem to prefer the human contact found at our older registers.

Tomorrow, I get to wrangle carts.

And, Dear DR Elmore -

Everything that has been taking place in your life is good reason to feel saddened.  You've been through the wringer over the past year.

However, I believe your mood will lift if you can convince your doctors to correct, through whatever means necessary, your back pain.  This is wearing you down beyond what you should have to tolerate, and the pain is clearly having an effect on how you react to the other parts of your life.

Love you very much.

I began with FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, the new Ultimate Edition transfer. It's quite wonderful looking, and, of course, the new DTS soundtrack is splendid. I had about twenty minutes before the beginning of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, so I saw that Showtime-HD was showing MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III, and I watched some of it in high definition.

I have the movie on high def Blu-ray disc, and the disc version has slightly more saturated colors, but otherwise the picture quality seemed to match that on the Blu-ray (meaning that's it's a reference quality presentation).

As several other episodes have done this season, the first half hour of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES irritated me to death (the same old klutzy stuff with Susan, the same machinations from Edie, the same arrogant entitlism from Gaby), but by the second half, the writing got more interesting, and the ladies were doing things outside the caricatures they've made for themselves, and I actually enjoyed it.

Thanks, dear man!  Everyone's been so supportive and it's really appreciated.

I just watched THE TUDORS, and I'm so frustrated (on top of everything else!) because I need a Tower Records to go into and browse through a bin of music by Thomas Tallis.  I just went to Amazon.com, and I don't just get music by Tallis, but collections including music by him, and tons and tons of recordings of Ralph Vaughan Williams' glorious "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis"! Oy!

How can I figure out whch recording of his music I would like to purchase?

BTW, the episode was quite interesting with another bit of incorrect history involving Charles Brandon, but it was also quite poignant and a bit sad.  Maybe elegiac is a better word.

Who in my life deserves a pie in the face? Oh, probably that evil developer. I am taking guilty pleasure in watching him crash and burn. Last week he declared backruptcy, his loft went into foreclosure, and people are starting to realize that everything we tried to tell them about him was true.

(I mean...if your own MOTHER were sueing you for FRAUD, for stealing her inheritance and forging signatures...don't you think that should be a clue that we shouldn't give him half a million dollars of our tax money?)

28 contractors have liens on him for this project.

Even the paper is calling on the city council to do an audit, but since the chincy bassa is best buddies with the mayor, and in business with the most powerful counclman, and since he gave an "appreciation fundraiser" to another councilman...

They say it's not nice to kick a man when he's down, but I would certainly pie him. And with a COW PIE!!

The orchestrations are exquisite, witty and make me happy every time I hear them. And I hear something new every time I listen to it.

I am in AWE of the brilliance of Elmore!

That fat conductor can go to HELL!

The fat conductor could use a pie in the face.

After such a stressful week, I spent all day yesterday attacking the new yard---cutting and bagging up the grass, (3/4 of an acre) weeding, pulling out tress (my Pull-out-ese work out) pruning and lopping. I could barely move by the end of the day, but it was a good pain.

But I should have kept in mind that I was volunteering at the spring BBQ at the new neighborhood today.

Part of the festivities was a raffle. Our neighbor, the vet, donated an annual exam, including shots, bloodwork, etc.--one for a dog and another for a cat.

I won the cat prize! When I picked it up, the people said "I hope you have a cat"! LOL.

Now I need to figure out which one gets the prize!

I settled on "The Tallis Scholars Sing Thomas Tallis," a 2-CD set, which includes both church music and some of his poetry settings.

And so, to bed!

I got tied up reading about Thomas Wyatt on Wikipedia.  I had no idea he invented the English sonnet!

Now to bed.

OYSTERS!

Which Woody can not abide, along with squid, cauliflower, escargot and runny egg yolks.

He was so thrilled watching one of the dishes prepared - a fresh oyster plopped on bed of sauted cauliflower and topped with a barely cooked egg yolk!

Yummers!

I thought I was going to bed but happened to flip on the TV to a doc on Ahmet Ertegun. I wanted to watch this, but I hated all the gimickry in putting it all together. Yuck. Why not let the content tell the story? Do we need "real" cigarette smoke emanating from the cigarette in the still photograph? (They must have picked this up from the Frank Loesser doc.)

Just 'cause you have the tools doesn't mean you always have to use them!

What is Nutella (http://www.nutellausa.com/)??  It's a delicious "Hazelnut spread with skim milk & cocoa."  Here's a picture:

It's VERY good...in my humble opinion. ;)

Yesterday was a fairly quiet, but fun birthday...I went to work for a few hours and then went over to my sister's house to open presents before we went to dinner.  The family went to Plaza Jalisco and my friend Margo and her daughter Lian met us there, also.  Much food was consumed and a few pictures were taken:

The Clock Is Ticking:

http://www.deathclock.com/ (http://www.deathclock.com/)   :o

Okay, this is funny!  I put in accurate information (specifically BMI ::)) and it said that I would live until 2055...89 years old!  That's good!  All of my grandparents lived until their middle 80s.  Anway, I changed the BMI to a much lower number and it said that I would only live until 2049...five years less!

Stay tuned.

~~~Vibes and Hugs for DR Elmore!!~~~
Oh!  I can't believe I forgot to brag about mention what I got for my birthday!  From my parents, I got a check...money is always good. :) From Larry, I got a $50 cash card from Costco (that's basically two almost-full tanks of gas).  From my niece Hilary, I got "Dreamgirls," Showstopper Edtion Gift Set (http://www.amazon.com/Dreamgirls-Showstopper-Edition-Gift-Set/dp/B000Q63GWM/ref=sr_1_11/102-3762568-1656134?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1178518117&sr=1-11), which includes the 2-disc DVD, the 2-disc soundtrack and Limited Edition Theatrical Program (she got it at Costco, so it was less expensive than what's listed on Amazon, but Costco.com doesn't list it).
And from my sister, a home-made card that read..."GEORGE'S BIRTHDAY PRESENT From the Bestest Sister Ever (the Bestest he'll ever get, anyway):  A trip to Las Vegas, Baby!!  Including hotel and a really big shoe, probably all your meals, maybe a few souvenirs!"
 :o That was completely unexpected!  I guess when one sells a house (as my sister did in December), one can give one's only brother a totally kick-ass gift!! ;D ;D ;D
Boy, this is slow going around these parts.  Okay, here is a question or a subject or a something:
If you could throw a cream pie in the face of some celebrity (with no fear of arrest or reprisal); who would it be and why?
Tom Cruise, because he is a pompous ass.
Paris Hilton, because she really shouldn't be a celebrity...at all. :P
