Title: THE LIME RICKEY
Post by: bk on May 11, 2007, 12:02:12 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were very lime and rickeyesque, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're not coming home until they figure out what a lime rickey is.

Can someone please tell me why I have this annoying shooting pain in the little toe of my left foot?  It feels like someone is jabbing it with a pin.  I can't feel anything wrong (like a splinter or whatever), nor can I imagine what would be causing it.

Warner Bros. Bans Advance Screenings in Canada
 (http://www.imdb.com/news/wenn/2007-05-10/#3)

Quote
Warner Bros. has banned all advance screenings of its films in Canada, claiming piracy is rife in the country. The studio's forthcoming releases Ocean's Thirteen and Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix won't be shown north of the US border ahead of their release after Warner executives decided copyright laws in Canada fail to sufficiently protect films from being illegally copied. They claim 70 percent of Warners' releases in the last 18 months have been pirated in Canada. At present, it is not a criminal offence in the country to record movies in theatres for personal use.

MBarnum, although I don't want to discourage you from cultural pursuits while in New York, I'm not sure that a performance of Moon for the Misbegotten (even with Kevin Spacey) would be up your alley. Eve Best, who plays Josie is supposed to be breathtaking but Spacey has gotten mixed reviews (that shouldn't stop one from seeing a show, god knows LoveMusik got mixed reviews and I quite enjoyed it). It's also a VERY LONG show and I just checked the show and all this information is meaningless because the show ends on June 10th and you don't arrive until June 28!

Good morning, all!  Yes, DR Tomovoz, I am all caught up, and grateful that Mr Persoff did not show up last night.  My morning consists of puttering about the apartment and working on my editorial guidelines. After that, I've got a trip to NYPL, to look at newspapers from 1903-1906.

DR MBarnum, I'm sure there will be something to amuse you theatrically while you're terrifying the local aviary.  I'll look for something beyond a wrestling match or loincloth pageant I think you will find both edifying and entertaining.  Surely there's something.

TOD:
DVD:  UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS Season 2 continued

I was just looking at the TDF lineup of discount tickets: the Lansbury-Seldes play DEUCE is up, and that surprises me. I thought Angela's return would sell out, no matter how good or poor the vehicle was.

DR MBarnum, NAKED BOYS SINGING is up as well. I thought of you at once.  I'm sorry there's no NAKED OLD COOTS SINGING option.
Title: Re:THE LIME RICKEY
Post by: Ben on May 11, 2007, 06:43:25 AM
Deuce has been on TDF frequently, ever since the word on the street came out that it isn't a great play, thought that doesn't seem to have affected The Year of Magical Thinking. It got the same kind of reviews, play-wise but it's closer to a sell out than Deuce. I think the producers of Deuce thought all you would have to do is plunk AL on stage and people would go wild. I adore AL and she's quite good in a less than good play but I do wish it had been different.

As for last night's "sneak preview" of "Traveler" on ABC...

I enjoyed it.  And it was also neat seeing how they morphed various NY locales into fictional New York locales.  Seeing the New York Public Library stand in for the Drexler Museum was quite fun.  -And I have to say that those young men and the FBI agents following them made quite good time being chased from 46th and 8th Ave., to the Queensborough Bridge.

Good morning to the assembled lovelies and studlies here, and H/Ks and the G.P. ---

Well Larry.... apparently Nem. P.  stayed out of your dreams last night by making sure that I had a weird one instead.  I have an appointment with an elderly lady out in Sun City today, and she can be a little difficult.  So in my dream, I was running about an hour late getting to her place, because I was having to pull a very large cardboard carton along the side of my car (with my hand out the window holding on to it) while I was trying to drive!!  Makes absolutely no sense!!

My very favorite N.P. line of dialogue is from "Some Like It Hot" during the Florida convention of the mob bosses...... referring to "Geraldine" and "Josephine;"  "..... you mean, you let those guys get away...TWICE !!??"

I didn't hear thunder but it was POURING rain at 6am this morning when I left for the office. My upper portions were dry but my shoes were quite wet when I arrived at Chez Office.

The rain is supposed to let up for tomorrow morning. We still plan on being at the airport excessively early. Anthony puts up with my travel quirks. Air travel has become so unpleasant but it's what ya gotta do to get to places like Captiva so I'll put up with it.

According to Continental dot com all plans for tomorrow's departure are on schedule.

Well, let me see.  It's later in the same story arc...and Allison keeps having visions.  Joe seeks advice from an attorney.  Joe's boss offers him an "early" bonus and encourages him to take a couple of more weeks.  And, oh yeah, the company insurers want Joe to sign a waiver holding the company harmless from any past OR FUTURE problems BEFORE he can go back to work.  Meanwhile, Allison keeps trying to find a way to let Debra (Neve Campbell) know how concerned she is for Debra's safety.  Debra, however, begins distancing herself from Allison's concerns.  In the DA's office, Manuel begins receiving news reports insinuating he has mishandled this case, just as he did a previous case (link???).  Allison has a vivid dream that assures her Debra's in trouble and she goes to Debra's hotel.  In trying to convince Debra she's in trouble, Allison levels with her about her talents and how she uses them to help the DA.  Later, news story reveals all the shocking details about how the DA is in the thrall of some self-absorbed psychic to tell them what to do. Realizing that Debra has lied about who she is, Allison confronts Debra, enraged at the betrayal.  Debra tells Allison she needs professional help.

To be continued.....

WHAT?!  That's it?!  ANOTHER continuation?!  I hate those!  I knew she was a reporter from the get-go -- I was just wanting to know if she had a connection to the murdering-husband guy, like maybe his girlfriend, the one he was messing around with when he murdered his wife, and she pulled the head out of the freezer and killed that lady to make it look like the murdering-husband guy really wasn't the one who killed his wife in the first place and then he'd get set free, they'd get married, share the dead wife's wealth together while she won a Pulitzer for her article exposing the DA and his psychic -- you know, something juicy like that...

I keep meaning to say that I bought the new book on Doris Day's movies titled CONSIDERING DORIS DAY by Tom Santopietro.

It is MOSTLY a rehash of stories from Doris' bio and re-iteration of Molly Haskell's thoughts about Day in FROM REVERANCE TO RAPE - but there is an almost scene by scene breakdown of Day's films.  It is very interesting - but I was thinking it would delve a bit more into the why Doris was so popular WHEN she was popular and what the contemporary audiences were saying by making Doris the TOP female box office star for so many years.

Her recording and television careers are also discussed.  The pictures are great - if you are a Day fan or are interested in her, this is a fine book.

And in case you didn't know:

Doris Day is the biggest female star in Hollywood history.  She spent ten years ranked as one of the top ten box office attractions including FOUR years at number one.  Neither Elizabeth Taylor nor Betty Grable who also spent ten years on the list could match Doris' four years as number ONE!

Only John Wayne ranked above her in the Quigley Poll (exhibitors and distributors) as the TOP BOX OFFICE personality of the 1960's.

I love Doris Day.

I tend to blame Carol Burnett for the "uncool" rep Doris Day got during the 70s.  As much as Ms. Burnett said that she adores all movie stars, her parodies of Ms. Day tended to be meaner than most.

Warner Bros. has banned all advance screenings of its films in Canada, claiming piracy is rife in the country.

When we were invited to show DAUGHTERS OF THE DUST at the Toronto Film Festival back in '91, the films were shown more than once, in different theatres and were shuttled from theatre to theatre in vans.

We received a phone call late one night asking us if we could provide another print of our film. (We had only been able to afford one copy!) Apparently, the van full of films had been stolen and everyone was afraid that their films would wind up as bootlegs.

The van turned up the next day, with all the films intact. It seems  that whoever stole it just wanted the van, not the contents. They'll never realized what an opportunity for bootlegging they squandered!

Well, I wasn't sure that the CDs were damaged or not--I never took off the cellophane.  If they were just for myself, I would have opened them to check, kept them if they were okay and replaced the cases.  But I didn't want my Mom to think that they were second hand or something like that when she saw there was no wrapping.

My Mom gave me birth and I'm giving her CDs.   I guess that evens out.

When I arrived at Boswell's this morning there was no place to park - I finally had to park way up a hill and in so doing ran over some ridiculous screw thing that lodged itself in my tire (it was in someone's driveway that I had to turn around in).  Since there was a big thing on the end of the screw (it looked like a giant end of a pushpin) I thought about pulling it out - thank goodness I didn't.  I was able to rehearse for two hours and the tire was still okay, and then I made it to the gas station I like to have the tire plugged.  The minute he pulled the screw out of the tire you could hear the air escaping - had I removed it prior to rehearsal the tire would have been flat in two minutes flat.

Was catching up on some reading before I head north to my parents, I was reading an article about NBA player Derek Fisher and his daughter.

Vibes to his daughter as he recovers from cancer. She had a tumor removed due to retinoblastoma. It is a cancer of the retina and is treatable when caught early.

Ironic, I am a fan of Matt Ashford and his daughter has it and my freind Cassie, her daughter has it but has made a remarkable recovery despite the fact of only having on eye. She had one removed.

It is a beautiful Friday and I don't want to be at work. And it looks like I am just about the only person in my office today...so I can turn up the Bollywood tunes and pretend to be busy.

It's a beautiful Friday here in Olympia and I'm NOT at work. :) Today, I'm going with my family to a Seattle Storm women's basketball pre-season game.  My niece has season tickets (it's probably the last season that the team will be in Seattle...or even Washington) and season ticket holders are able to get free extra tickets for the exhibition game.  So, we're making a day of it.  We're also going to stop at Ikea.  Love the meatballs in their deli! ;D So, it's time for me to feed the cat, take a shower, get dressed, run a few errands and get to my sister's house.

I began my afternoon finishing all of the special features in THE THIRD MAN set, and there are hours of them. They do an eight minute overview of the production using a voiceover narrator and behind-the-scenes stills, and I thought that was excellent. Sometimes, the less elaborate something is, the more impact it has.

Next, I began watching shows recorded over the last few nights on the DVR. I began with last night's CSI. Recurring character Lady Heather once again made an appearance, but her story wasn't very interesting. More interesting was a dead woman in a hit and run accident.

Last night I went to hear Francis Ford Copolla speak to students at Georiga State. He showed a 1 hour doc that his wife Eleanor made about his new film, YOUTH WITHOUT YOUTH.

The doc wasn't great but the film looked very interesting. Copolla was extremely generous with his time, so much so that the theatre staff basically had to kick him out, but he was insistent about answering everyones' questions. The whole audeince seemed very inspired by his observations on filmmaking.

Several people wanted to give him their demo reels, etc. so he designated a spot on the stage for anyone who wanted to pass something on to him. I had a copy of SACCO AND VANZETTI with me, (his uncle Anton is in our film) so I put it on the pile of stuff. He had wanted to do a film on S&V awhile ago, so I hope he'll watch it!

I watched SMALLVILLE next, a moving story that focused on Lois Lane for a change. I liked most of it very much (though the officer being controlled by scientists being able to come out of his "affliction" due to Lois' sincere pleas was a little much).

The Quigley, by the way, makes no comment about Day being the top box office female of all time.  It does, however, say that Barbra Streisand holds a record.

But my response wasn't in regard to your statement but to the follow-up question posed by DR JRand wondering if Shirley matched Doris' years in the top ten.

TRAVELER got really anemic ratings last night, by far the lowest of any show premiering after a new episode of GREY'S ANATOMY.

I got a glimpse of ABC's proposed new schedule for next season. Nothing written in stone yet, but I was happy to see that UGLY BETTY is staying put on Thursday night.

OCTOBER ROAD moves into the LOST timeslot - Wednesday at 10.

The GREY's spinoff, now called PRIVATE PRACTICE, will be Wednesday at 9.

MEN IN TREES right now is penciled in for Friday night (back where it came from).

When LOST returns in January 2008, it'll be on Tuesday night.

When DH Richard was in Wisconsin in February, we had a snow/ice/snow storm that I had to contend with.

DH Richard is in Wisconsin this week and his older brother has ended up in a different hospital.  They're not sure what's wrong, but it probably has something to do with the fact that he stopped taking his blood pressure medication and hasn't been monitoring his diabetes as he should.

Next time DH Richard is due to spend a week in Wisconsin, I'm going with him.

Does anyone - DR MattH, perhaps - know if this series is "open-ended" or a limited run?  There were certainly a lot of questions dropped in last night's episodes, but I there is definitely an end in sight somewhere down the line.

It seemed like it would have/should have ended before the last scene.  But i'm happy that they didn't leave it as cliffhanger in that way.

But the real ending was actually probably better.

Geez, so much happened in the last 5 minutes that i am trying to absorb it all.

I began my evening watching episode #3 of PLANET EARTH. This one was called "Fresh Water," and again the high def video photography was simply breathtaking. Dealing with the rivers and lakes of the world and the biological life therein, it was just one jaw-dropping scene after another. Seeing those crocodiles bring down a wildebeast was really astonishing.

I wonder if i am the only one who feels that they should not be allowed to wait till the end of may to decide if long running shows are renewed.

I think that the actors should know these things before they finish the season. And i think the writers should have the opportunity to write an ending to the show.

I'm trying to think which shows (that i watch) am i still wondering about.

Most of the shows are popular so i don't have to worry (ugly betty, lost, heroes ...).

I guess Ghost Whisperer is one i have not heard confirmed (although i think it does well in the ratings). Of course there is veronica mars (which is one of my favorites).

I agree about GHOST WHISPERER, DR Jennifer. As we neared the end, I thought about how CBS was going to carry the show on with this new direction. By the time it was over, it seems to me it will be an even richer and more poignant set of main characters next season.

I guess Gabriel is joining the show as a regular?

GHOST WHISPERER is safe, but CLOSE TO HOME is probably not going to make it.

The last I read, SHARK is probably going to be moved to Tuesday nights at 10.

DR Jennifer, the networks have to see what the pilots for new shows look like before they can ascertain how many slots they're going to have open for the next season. Those pilots often aren't finished until late April-early May. That's why they often wait until the last minute to make decisions.

For instance, I read that ABC's comedy pilots were mostly pretty awful this year, so they're going to have to bring back some not very popular shows like NOTES FROM THE UNDERBELLY and maybe even THE KNIGHTS OF PROSPERITY to plug holes in the schedule for next season.

SCRUBS had a irritating episode for the most part (except for the always brilliant janitor character). JD and Elliott - please don't go down that road again!

LAW & ORDER had a very political episode about conditions in V.A. hospitals which I found fascinating. McCoy in court made some inarguable points which should make some folks in charge hang their heads in shame.

My first Bollywood movie of the weekend is APRAHD (1973) which seems to be one part GRAND PRIX and one part ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. On the whole it is a LOT of fun!
