Title: EARTHY, SPICY NOTES
Post by: bk on May 12, 2007, 12:07:44 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were earthy and spicy, not necessarily in that order, and now it is time for you to post until the earthy and spicy cows come home.

Well, yesterday's Seattle Storm was fun.  We ate at the Seattle Center Food Court (I think the restaurant was called Michelangelo's) and the burger I had was quite good.  The basketball game itself wasn't as exciting as regular games usually are (even though they won by 18 points!), but that's probably because the two star players, Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson, weren't back from playing in the Russian league, yet.  They were supposed to fly in at midnight, so they should be in Seattle now.

But there were a few other exciting moments...sort of.  One Storm player got hit in the shoulder somehow and had to sit out almost the entire game!  This happened within the first minute of playing.  Then, another Storm player got hit in the face and got a bloody nose!  She was dripping blood and they had to stop the game while it was all cleaned up.  And then a member of the visiting team tripped over a Storm player and fell and literally rolled into the chairs in the front row.  She, too, had to be taken out of the game.  I don't think I've seen three players taken out of the same game before.  Hopefully, they'll all be recovered enough to play once the regular season starts next week.

After the game, we went to Borders and I bought some CDs, including the original Broadway cast recording of Martin Short's Fame Becomes Me (http://www.amazon.com/Fame-Becomes-Me-Martin-Short/dp/B000NJXGB8/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-3762568-1656134?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1178958021&sr=1-1), Judy Garland's The Letter (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000MM1F1E/ref=ord_cart_shr/102-3762568-1656134?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance), the TV soundtrack to Doctor Who (http://www.amazon.com/Doctor-Who-Original-Television-Soundtrack/dp/B000KC8O3S/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-3762568-1656134?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1178958202&sr=1-1) and a couple of other CDs.  We then came home and that's where I am now...ready to go to bed.

Later this morning, the season ticket holders for the Seattle Storm can go to a Q&A session at the Key Arena.  My niece (and season ticket holder) MUST go, and I've been commanded to take her.  It should only last a couple of hours, then we'll go to Silver Platters where I can make some more purchases...maybe. ::)

Good Morning Singdaw. Just checking in before the car service arrives to whisk us to Newark.

Things look in order here so I will leave.

I'll check in later this evening after we get settled in Florida.

As MusicGuy is wont to say, Play nice everyone.

Saturday and a full work day.

Yes, thanks, Mr Merlin is a very handsome cat, and he is aware of that thank you very much.

Hmmmm.....I got a notice from Amazon saying they were having trouble processing my card....which made me scared that my identity had been stolen again and my card run up to the limit....but checking my online balance showed plenty of money and NO untoward pending charges....hmmmm.  I don't know what's happening.

And of course I can't log on to Comcast from work for some reason, the computer blocks me....so I will have to wait until tonight to see what's going on.  I guess I will just keep watching my statement.

Hi all.  I'm sorry if I scared anyone by not posting. There is just so much to do and only one me to get it all done.

I had a doggie door installed on Thursday night and by the time that was completed and I tried to make myself some kind of dinner, I was so tired I just went to bed.

Bear learned how to use it with no problem but Sheena is scared to death of it and just sits and crys when I try to coax her through it.  I've tried treats, toys and even shoved her trhough it but nothing works.   I guess she'll just have to learn on her own.

Last night I had a doctor appointment for myself.  The good news is that the doctor feels that my heart is fine ( she still wants a stress test) after doing an EKG and that the pains I'm having is just stress.

She gave me a perscription for some chill pills (which I got but I doubt I'll ever take) and life goes on.

I had the worst luck trying to get everything done so I could go down to visit Mom.  First it took forever to get out of Walmart because I stopped to buy the dogs some goodies (and they have been so very good).

Saturday morning greetings!  Today is the first Saturday in quite a while that's not commtted for me, so I enjoyed a slight sleep-in.  Not that I don't have things to do, but they're low key, putzy things around the house.

DR Danise - it's good to see you here.  I was beginning to get worried.

DR Singdaw - thanks for the vibes for my brother-in-law.

Then I stopped to get the chill pills.  Well, I heard my name called so I went back to get them and when the guy asked if I had any questions, I asked how they work, what can I expect to feel, etc.  He said they take about a month to really kick in and that they may cause me to have stomach cramps.

I was shocked and said I didn't know what good they would do even if I did use them if it was going to take a month before they would really kick in.

Anyway, I paid for them and as I was leaving the store, I decided to read the little pamplet they attach to all the drug bags.  Guess what?  It wasn't MY name on the bag!!!!!

I went back, had to stand in line all over again and show them I got the wrong pills!   The guy was very sorry but if I hadn't asked what to expect, I might have been in Sun City before I realized something was wrong.

I guess that goes to show that you have got to check everything before you leave the store.

I hope so.  I figure if she has to go potty bad enough and ishe sees that Bear goes outside and back in when he wants, she'll give it a try.

The sad thing is that she did try to come through it when Bear did.  Since the flap was on his back, when it got to his butt it fell and hit her on the nose.  I think that's what scared her.  If she had been first, I don't think there would have been a problem.

Good morning, all!  Back to the weird dreams, JRand56!  In one, I had a niece named Issy, who doesn't exist in reality, and in another, I was in an environment like the Wiliamstown Theatre Festival or Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival (two places I've worked) and a grop of us drove by car to visit the Rothermels, who were neighbors in Ohio from around 1958-1966.  My brother Macbeth was there, but not speaking to us, and recurring in this dream was my niece Issy, who was playing with a huge dollhouse.

Then, I had a dream that I was in auditions for several (???) new shows. Suddenly, the cast, writers, and I are on Highview Road in front of my grade school having a play reading, and I'm amazed by the number of people in the cast like Jim Hindman.  When the cast went back to 42nd Street, I had to go back to find my hat, so I went back to Highview Road for it.  I then decided to take a taxi to rejoin the cast, and I was standing on Ardmore Drive in Ohio trying to flag a yellow cab when I woke up.  Oy!

Today, I write more guidelines.  I hate these type of writing, and it's going quite slowly.

DRT MattH just brought me up to date on THE MEDIUM; I was so caught up in UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS last night, that when I realized I'd missed 20 minutes of GHOST WHISPERER, I decided to continue with Edwardian England.  Season Two down and on to Season Three.

I didn't have any strange dreams last night but a couple nights ago, I dreamed that my sister in law was driving and we were going down Hamilton Blvd in Sioux City. She was playing a game of Clue while she was driving - the whole board game was on the seat next to her - I started yelling "YOU AREN'T PAYING ANY ATTENTION TO DRIVING" and insisted she let me out of the car, which she did

I will be watching the upcoming release APOCALYPTO tonight since there is nothing on the paycable movie channels I want to see, so this afternoon, I may put in the new Ultimate Edition of GOLDFINGER that I recently won for next to nothing on Ebay.

Isn't that when you cut a whol in the end of a shoe box, and inisde you cut out different pictures which he assemble at different depths inside the box; so when you look throudh the hole in the end you have a three-dimensional picture?

Now, THAT was a sentence!

Hi again.  I'm sorry I had to leave like that.  Mom woke up and was complaining that her neck hurt and the pillow she had was killing her head.  I made a quick dash to a local Walmart to see what I could find to fix the problem.

I wanted one of those travel type pillows that fits around your neck but Walmart didn't carry them.  I saw a memory foam pillow that I thought might help so I got that but I know that at home, Mom never really liked them.  Still I thought it might help in this situation. Then I went to a a local CVS drug store but they didn't have anything like that either.

Finely I  spotted a Walgreens drug store and they had several type of the pillow I wanted.  Some even with vibrate and heat.   The one that had both the V & h looked very clunky and not very comforable so I got the vibrate type and a another non vibrate type that felt good to me.

She is using the latter pillow right now and I think it is helping her.  At least I hope it is.

It's hard for me to describe how far down Mom has gone in just the 2 days since I last saw her.  She won't eat, barely drinks and the nurse said that's because she is preparing to die.  No one here thinks it will be very long now.  She is passing a lot of blood.

I was told that she had a really bad day yesterday.

I'm trying to get myself ready as well but I know there just isn't any way I can.  I really don't want to take those chill pills unless I really have to.  I've never thought of myself as someone who runs away (even by taking a drug) from a bad situation.  Now is not the time to start.

It did me in! (I'm now residing at Happy Acres -- the men in white coats picked me up the other day). The theatre director sent the script that afternoon, I went the next day to work with the acting coach to get my blocking, etc.  I enjoyed working with her and I was amazed how much we were able to accomplish in two hours, but upon seeing the other gals monologues and going through my monologue 4 times that night (twice on book and the final two off), I realized I'd be the loose cannon of the show.  I wanted to help them out, but quickly realized my limitations. If I'm gonna go on stage, I want to be proud of what I do and I was feeling no sense of pride nor confidence in what I was doing. I kept waiting for them to say thanks, but no thanks -- when they didn't, I did.  I was a bit surprised that the acting coach hadn't stepped into the part for them -- she was on Full House and a bunch of other shows in the 80s and 90s -- Gail Edwards -- she could have done it in her sleep.  It seemed like they were really scrambling to pull this thing off.  They were still working on the set, missing props (I was having to mime my blocking with missing lamps), etc.  Come to find out, they didn't have someone for the French Fries monologue either, and she came in even later that evening and wasn't off book when I left.  So maybe I wouldn't have been the only loose cannon after all...The experience was way too stressful and not any fun -- which is why I do all this theatre stuff -- for the joy.  (wow, looks like I just wrote my own monologue...too wordy, Mz Karen...)  Thanks for thinking about me, Dingdaw!

Isn't that when you cut a whol in the end of a shoe box, and inisde you cut out different pictures which he assemble at different depths inside the box; so when you look throudh the hole in the end you have a three-dimensional picture?

Now, THAT was a sentence!

TCB ~ You and I ought to team up and write some monologues...(between your sentences and my paragraphs... :) )

Bless your heart, DR Danise.  I thought of you the other day -- there was an article about folks who take care of ill family members.  It really stressed the importance of taking care of yourself (mentally and physically and emotionally).  You love her, she knows that, and that's the most important thing...don't beat yourself up over all the rest (easy for me to say, I know, but be kind to yourself and take time for yourself, too).

Dingdaw ~ Even though I feel the guilt of letting that theatre down and not being able to do what I thought I'd be able to, the good news is my husband is so pleased I'm not doing it.  He's such a sweetheart and supports me in this passion of mine, but from the get-go was thinking I was nuts to attempt it -- and kept asking me, Why?

Thank you.    I think the hardest thing is seeing her the way she is now.  If this is how is going to be, I do hope that it won't be long.  The person in that bed right now is not my Mother.  And it seems like each time I see her, it's even less of my mother.  She is slipping away a little bit at a time.

Thank you DR Ginny.  I hate to keep bringing every one down.  I think I'll sit and read for a little bit.  I bought a book, Stephen Kings, "IT" at the local GoodWill when I was looking for the local bus stop.

I learned that these is an express bus from Sun City to Downtown Tampa during the week so I could just do a park and ride and then I'd be right back here with Mom.

Now that I have the doggie door installed, I was hoping that I would only have to go home every couple of days to check on them.  I sure do hope that Sheena learns to use that door!

DR Danise, have they given you any brochures on the dying process?  Ask if they have any and read up on it, it will tell you all the signs and prepare you.  I hope for your mother's sake it's a quick decline and death.  If I sound callous and harsh, I don't mean to.  I feel the better prepared you are, the easier it will happen.  And then, like me, you'll mourn.  For a long time.

I send hugs, affecton, support, everything but myself.

I sure do hope that Sheena learns to use that door!

When we got our doggy door when Deuce was a puppy, our older dog, Shasta, didn't take to it as quickly as Deuce. So we got handfuls of treats and went back and forth on each side of the door and would open it and show the treats and lure her back and forth.  Of course, Deuce loved the game -- getting treats for something he already thought was fun. (Which may have also helped, Shasta wasn't about to let that young whipper-snapper get all the treats). In about a day or two, Shasta was going in and out of the door like a pro.  Ahhh, the power of treats!

DR Danise - My thoughts and prayers are with you and your mother.

As for the medications the doctor prescribed for you, it sounds like s/he may have given you some low-level chill pills.  I doubt you would have been given anything "too zonky" since you're still working, driving and taking care of your mother.  I'd ask your doctor a few more questions about them, and maybe you could just start off with a half dosage, and then see how it goes from there.  Taking them would not be running away, in fact, they may help you keep a level-head further down the line.

As for the doggy-door... Well, I just hope that Sheena is "neat", if you get my drift.  ;)

Been on the phone a good long time this afternoon but did manage to watch a couple of things.

I started with GOLDFINGER, the Ultimate Edition. As with the other remasters, the film looks brand new, especially with that new DTS surround soundtrack. It's not quite as booming as the one for DR. NO (which is the best of the remastered soundtracks that I've heard), but it's a nice update, and for purists, the original mono track is there, too, so there's something for everyone.

I went to the second disc in the set and looked around until I found "The Making of GOLDFINGER," and I'm in the middle of watching it. Very nice to see Connery, Honor Blackman, and others remembering the film so fondly.

Bear learned how to use it with no problem but Sheena is scared to death of it and just sits and crys when I try to coax her through it.  I've tried treats, toys and even shoved her trhough it but nothing works.   I guess she'll just have to learn on her own.

If she's been shoved through each way, once, and she has Bear as an example, you've done all you can do. Just be patient (and hope).

Speaking of lust....

I went to a late lunch yesterday with some dear friends.  I had to work until two, so by the time I arrived my friends were already seated and had been served their cocktails.  The waiter came over to the table to see if I wanted a cocktail.  I looked up at this young man, and honestly, he was one of the nicest looking young men I had seen in a long time.

Well, the waiter said something to me like, "Hello, my name is Matt, and I will be serving you today.  I stared at this kid, and without thinking, I said, "God, I hope so."........... Nothing like laying my cards on the table.  For the rest of the meal, he would come and stand right next to me, to inquire if things were okay, or if we needed anything.  And he was obviously staring at me.

Somewhere along the line, it occurred to be that this kid was probably twenty-one or twenty-two years old.  And I started thinking to myself, "Good grief, I am old enough to have known his older brother."

Anyway, I backed off, tried not to stare, and I resisted the urge to leave my business card on the table.

But WOW, what was this kid thinking?

Needless to say, I had a pretty good time at Macy's.  And Banana Republic.  And The Gap.  ;)

-Well, actually, I didn't end up buying any at BR, but it was fun seeing what their spring/summer line looked like.  Lots and lots of linen.  In any case...

I probably spent a bit more than I should have, but as I was shopping, I realized the last time I had done any major clothes shopping was last fall.  And that was for fall/winter clothes.  With Spring in the air over the past few weeks, I've been basically wearing the same three dress shirts, and now I have a couple more to add to the rotation.  And most of them were on sale too!  *And I used my "Traveler's Discount" at Macy's too!  :)

Thankfully, due to the Mother's Day sales, the Men's Department wasn't too crazy.  And they had a bunch of stuff on sale too.  I made sure to try everything on, and anything that raised a question in my mind as soon as I looked at myself in the mirror was put right back on the hanger.  Consequently, it took me about two hours to buy four shirts, but at least I know I won't be returning them.

Whew!

DR Jose - what's the traveler's discount at Macy's?

If you go to the Customer Service desk on the Arcade Level at the Macy's Herald Square location, and you present an out-of-state driver's license or an out-of-country passport, they will give you a "Savings Pass" good for 11% off your purchases that day.  And for the next five days.  At that Macy's and any other Macy's.  -I believe the foreign visitors discount is 15%.

I believe it was initially offered to off-set the New York State and City tax, but since there's now no tax on clothing under $100, it's a true 11% savings (at least on articles of clothing under $100).  And the discount applies in almost all departments, as well on any sale and clearance prices.

DR Singdaw, I can't have any opinions about Tivo since I've never owned it. Those who have it swear by it.

Our cable service (Time Warner) offersa DVR with their digital cable boxes which offers two tuners and thee ability to record high definition channels. This is what I have, and it's wonderful. When you research Tivo and DVR, you need to keep in mind that Tivo requires a phone line connection (at least I believe it does; talk to others here who have it). The DVR requires only the cable connection. Some Tivo models offer more features than others. Again, the two technologies are similar but not exactly alike, so you do need to think about what you need from your recording device, what equipment you have (or want), and how much do you want to spend.

I began my evening of viewing finishing up two documentaries on the GOLDFINGER DVD special features disc. One was on the making of the film and the other was about the Bond phenomenon which swept the Us and the world after the release of GOLDFINGER.

Both were interesting documentaries (though each could have been much longer) and it was nice to see some of the toys and other merchandise that I vividly remember being sold in the mid-1960s.

Then I watched Mel Gibson's Mayan language film from last year APOCALYPTO. The film lets us get to know a tribe of people, has them conquered, and then we go on the journey to their final destination. Amazing that the last 45 minutes of the picture are THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME in Mayan. Exciting, breathtaking, but basically nothing we haven't seen before.

Of course, in the "making of" documentary I'm watching now, everyone keeps saying how this has never been done on the screen before. The Mayan language aspect of it is certainly unique, but the various rituals and blood sacrifices have been done in jungle pictures since the silent days.

The Q&A with the Seattle Storm was fun.  We watched them practice with some very attractive men (who were all very good basketball players)!  After the open practice, there was a short Q&A with the entire team (but not the men :() and then we were all separated into sections where one team member spoke/ answered questions/ autographed things for three minutes.  When the buzzer buzzed, each team member rotated to the next group.  It was cool!  Each group got three minutes with every team member.

After we left Seattle, my niece and I went to Silver Platters in Renton where I bought The Great American Trailer Park Musical (http://www.amazon.com/Great-American-Trailer-Park-Musical/dp/B000CNE13M/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-3762568-1656134?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1179038960&sr=8-1), Evil Dead: The Musical (http://www.amazon.com/Evil-Dead-Musical-Original-Off-Broadway/dp/B000N3ST7U/ref=pd_ecc_rvi_3/102-3762568-1656134?ie=UTF8&qid=1179038960&sr=8-2) and the DVD to "All About Eve" (which I just realized that I might already have ::)).  I hate it when that happens.

Heading south again, I demanded that we stop at Pepper at Ted Brown so that I could look at some songbooks.  I ended up buying the vocal selections to William Finn's "Elegies:  A Song Cycle" and "Avenue Q" (which I'm also wondering if I already have...but I'm not sure :P).

After I dropped my niece at her home, I went by myself to Red Robin and had my free birthday burger (by way of e-mail coupon).  I had their Burger Parmigiana and garlic fries...which I'd never even knew that they had and they were quite delicious!  And since the only other thing I got was a soda (diet Coke), the whole bill was about $2.70!  Darn good for a birthday burger. :D

I then came home and watched last night's "Ghost Whisperer" (a very good episode, if you ask me), then remembered to log in before the end of the day.
