Well, you've read the notes, the notes were not too snotty, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently sneezing and wheezing.

I don't think Lord Challmond is going to need a bride, seeing as he's got no penis. I think this title will be going to a distant nephew. But who'd wanna pass on these genes, anyway? If Quentin Tarrantino and Jay Leno had a child, this is what he'd look like.
She looks rather happy, though. Probably thinking, "Whew, I'll never have to do my wifely duty, seeing as my husband lacks the proper equipment."

More fun where that came from!

Good morning, all!  I was up too late watching UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS and I am quite groggy.  I watched the first two episodes of Season 3, which are about Lady Marjorie sailing on the Titanic.  I think the series holds up amazingly well, and the cast is amazing in retrospect: the regular cast, especially the character people, is quite wonderful, and there have been guest shots by Georgia Brown, David Kernan, Jane Carr, and Cathleen Nesbitt so far.  In the episode about the brothers of Hudson and Mr Bellamy, Hudson's sister-in-law was played by Marcia Ashton who played Sister Ecclesia in the original cast and Chichester revival of Sandy Wilson's wonderful VALMOUTH.

Today, off to Toyland for a few hours, and back for more UPSTAIRS.  I have no idea what other events will come up, but I hope it's a quiet day.

Good morning all!

Mom was in rare form last night.  She was giving the nurse what for and make it clear that she wants to go home.

As bad as thet sounds I think that is a good sign that she is her old self.    The meak and mild verson was scaring me.

I also think that my being here is what is helping.  She looks different from the person I saw when I drove down on Friday night.

Happy Mothers day to all of the Moms!

DR Danise, have they given you any brochures on the dying process?  Ask if they have any and read up on it, it will tell you all the signs and prepare you.  I hope for your mother's sake it's a quick decline and death.  If I sound callous and harsh, I don't mean to.  I feel the better prepared you are, the easier it will happen.  And then, like me, you'll mourn.  For a long time.

I send hugs, affecton, support, everything but myself.

I have read the brochures but in Mom's case, they won't really help.  If that thing on her heart breaks, that's it.  It will happen so fast that she could be dead in mid sentance.

I understand what you mean about the quick death.  If Mom is going to be that person I saw on Friday night, I hope for it to be quick  and painless as possible as well.

And I am totaly disappointed that you send everything but yourself.  That's the most important part!   :D   ;)

In the middle of the night I got up to give Mom a drink of water and I asked her if she knew who I was, she said I was her mother.  I didn't correct her, I just told her to go back to sleep and I gave her the stuffed dog to keep her company.  She smiled a big smile when I did that.

The stuffed dog is the one I bought that night that we had dinner, DR Elmore .  The first time I went to NY.  Remember I went to the Toys-R-Us afterwards to ride the Ferris Wheel there.  There was a bin with black lab puppies.  I bought one to remember NY by.

As it turns out it looks just like Sheena (who I hope was very "neat" yesterday and today until I get there).

Thank you, DRL.

I may have done something foolish.  I only have one email address for my half brother and he passed away about 3 years ago.

I have no idea where his kids are or any of the other family since we were never close in any way, shape or form but I sent an email to that one address to let his wife know that Mom is dying.

I have no way of knowing if she will receive that email or what she will do with it  if she receives it but at least I feel like I made the gesture.   The ball is in their park now.

So far, it hasn't bounced back.

Awww.  When this is all over, you will have to plan a trip North to visit us because of two reasons:
  1.  I'm always happier the further I am from the Equator, which is why I never visited my dad during his Florida sojourns
  2.  we Manhattan Hainsies and Kimlets will be even happier for seeing you again.

Until then, it's hugs and hopeful thoughts till I see you again.

In a couple of hours, my mom and I will go to Music Hall for an afternoon concert by the Cincinnati Pops, with guest Bebe Neuwirth.  That's my present to her, along with another 2-pound box of Fannie May chocolates from DH Richard.

Lovely morning here and much cooler since we had that rain late yesterday. The evening was very pleasant, and this morning even more so. Highs in the high 70s today, but right now, it's cool enough to have doors and windows open, the attic fan running, and the house cooling down.

Today I want to finish up the remaining special features on APOCALYPTO (the rest of the making of documentary, a deleted scene, a running commentary track).

I did get that BRANDO biography off TCM yesterday, so I want to watch the first half of it today.

I have ARTHUR AND THE INVISIBLES I must watch, but then, before prime time starts tonight, I might be able to get to either a Tyrone Power film or THE LONG HOT SUMMER.

Well... The dang car alarm only went off about five or six times last night... And I believe there were a few times it was intentionally set off - I could hear people laughing before and after it started a few times.  In any case...

And speaking of Mother's Day...

I just called my own mother to say, "Hello," and to pass on the greetings of the day.  Well, as expected, true to form, the phone call was short.  Although, not short enough that I wasn't given a good amount of grief and guilt for not heading down there this weekend.  But...

I did find out that their current house is currently empty.  Any stray boxes I may have had down there are currently in the new house in Richmond.  And they close on the 26th.  Now I just need to find out what each of them decided in regards to their retirement and whether or not they'll be living somewhere temporarily in the DC area, or if they're going to go ahead and settle down in Richmond now.  -I have a sense they're going to hang out in the DC area for a couple more weeks, if not months.  -My mom's full retirement benefits kick in in July, I believe.  And, heck, my brother's Don and Michael have nice houses with an extra room.  ;)

In any case... It's nice to know she's still concerned and cares about me.

Danise, I'm so glad you are able to spend Mother's Day with your Mom. I hope she will be able to stay the "old" mom while she's with us!

I hope so too!  She's very mixed up this morning and I wonder who she thinks I am when she looks at me.  Funny that she never asks for me and I sometimes wonder if she is mad at me.  The "real" Mom would be very mad for being in this place.

I have to leave at about 2 to head up and see how the dogs are getting along.  My plan is to go into the back yard and call them through the doggie door.  My hope is that since they haven't seen me since Friday, Sheena may be so excited that she will dash through the doggie door (if she hasn't already learned it) to greet me.

I'll pack some work clothes and head back down in the early evening.  Now that I know where the express bus picks up down here in Sun City, I'm going to give it a try.  My new fear is that I'm going to get mixed up as to which bus I'm supost to catch in the afternoon and wind up at the wrong stop! ;D

If all is well at home, I'll just go to work from here until Wednesday and then I'll stay with Mom about an hour or so before I head back up and I'll stay home that night and Thursday.  Then on Friday, I'll do the weekend thing again and head back up to the house at about 2 next Sunday.

So it's true, Catholics do have more fun -- I'll convert, so I can go to that church!

Well folks,  I have to tell you that a female Catholic person was here.  I don't know what she was but she wanted to say a prayer over Mom and for me.  She asked if I'd take a wafer--I'm never comfortable about that sort of thing but I said yes.

I've always felt that if I set foot in a church it would fall down around me.  I was amazed when it didn't when I visited the Morman temple in SLC.  :D

Anyway, I have my very first holy wafer and it didn't burn my mouth.  I always wondered what they tasted like.    Kinda blah.

Reminds me of when I saw the movie "Dracula" and a non Catholic  friend asked me what it was that Van Helsing was breaking up and putting around him in a circle.  I told her they were like Holy Crackers-made by nuns.   ;) :D

Oh, I know. Our bus system is not convenient at all. The nearest bus stop is a half-mile away, and the buses come every half-hour on some routes, or many routes it is once an hour. That's why we all drive out here.

Wow, every half hour--that would be great!

The express buses only have 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon.  If you miss that last bus then your stuck with no way out of Dodge.

I keep losing the signal and have to sign back on.  I think it might be because the nurse was kind enough to bring in a very comfortable recliner for me to sit in that rocks.  When I dip below the window, I lose the signal.

But it is a very comfortable recliner.

That's not the express buses -- that's the regular route. And it can be a very long wait making connections when it is over 110F.

I have never had a raw oyster but I sure love 'em fried and in a stew.  I must assure you, they do not taste like today's headline.

I have returned from my most dangerous trek to Toyland and survived the ordeal.  I need to work on some of the guidelines, which I find an ordeal of the highest disorder.

My neighbor was dressing Ms Neuwirth recently in CHICAGO.  She's a really mean bitch, but that's been the gossip for years.

I suspect she'll do some of her Kurt Weill act; Don Sebesky orchestrated some of the numbers for full orchestra, and the copyists I work with on BABES IN TOYLAND did the copying.

Thanks for all the YourTube, Anthony Warlow clips.  I also watched the Robert Cuccioli version of "This Is The Moment."  I enjoyed both versions, and I see no reason to pick one over the other.  I was wondering where the Cuccioli version was filmed.  Was that from the Tony Awards?  "This Is The Moment" was probably the only moment that I truly loved when I saw the show on Broadway.

My friends, Sharry and Micheal, who saw the first pre-Broadway tour, the third pre-Broadway tour, and the Broadway production all claim it was a better show during the first tour.  All I can say is that I hope so.

DR George - As for the vocal selections to Avenue Q...  Maybe you got lucky and ended up buying the new songbook.  There are two versions out there.  The original, plus one that has fewer songs, but has the actual piano rehearsal score arrangements of the songs.  Aida and Wicked also have this option.  In any case, I hope you purchased a supplement rather than a duplicate.

Thanks for the info.  I didn't realize that there were two different versions.  It turns out that I got the 196 page "piano/vocal selections (http://www.amazon.com/Avenue-Musical-Piano-Vocal-arrangement/dp/0634079190/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/102-3762568-1656134?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1179078920&sr=1-2)" that puts the melody in the piano part.  I glanced through the songbooks that I own and have access to and didn't see any other version, so maybe I didn't actually get it before.  Now that I know that there are two versions, I just might get the other one, anyway. :)

Is purple totally out this year?  I look good in purple, a good deep, almost looks like it's royal blue purple, but I can't seem to track down a purple shirt other than a t-shirt.  *And the Ralph Lauren line this season has a yellow undertone to it, which makes me look sallow.

-And most of the reds I tried on yesterday, were more like brick red rather a more jewel-like tone.  What gives?

*Can you tell I had my colors done a few years ago. ;)

I started my afternoon of viewing with the remainder of the "making of" documentary for APOCALYTO. Could have had a lot more to it especially involving casting, coming up with the Mayan translation of the script and teaching it to the actors, etc.

There was also one brief little deleted scene that's included on the DVD, but it's about 30 seconds long, hardly worth including.

And then I listened to the commentary with Mel Gibson and his co-wrter/producer Farhad Safinia. They have a very easygoing conversation that's kind of a pleasure to listen to after the hyped-up tension of the piece itself.

Next I watched the first half of the Brando documentary. Glad I saw it, but I was disappointed that the various speakers and producers skipped all his work between ON THE WATERFRONT and ONE EYED JACKS. That's quite a few films that didn't even merit a mention.

I next put in ARTHUR AND THE INVISIBLES, a kind of modern day ALICE IN WONDERLAND as a young boy gets shrunk down to miniature size to hunt for some rubies buried by his grandfather so he and his grandmother won't be turned out of their house.

I only got about a half hour in before sleep began to overtake me.

It wasn't the film that put me to sleep. I had a large lunch, and with the cool temperatures and the quiet Sunday afternoon, it was so easy to slip into a nap which I most agreeably did.

Good Evening!

Today's trek:

Walked over to Broadway.
Took the 1 Train down to 103rd Street.
Walked down Broadway to 74th.
*I almost stood in the loooooooong line at Grom - the new gelato place - but decided to head on over to Levain instead.  Oh..
Walked over to Levain, picked up some dessert for tonight - we're having a mini "Survivor" finale gathering tonight here at the apartment.
Walked back up Broadway to 120th.
Hopped on the M 4 Bus.
Got off at 135th - only because the bus was heading back to the yard.  "Last stop!"
Walked up to 145th.
Bought a spicy pork tamale.
Walked back over to St. Nicholas.
And now I'm home.

:)

A truly gorgeous day, and just perfect for a stroll up and down the Upper West Side.

For mothers day I went with my mother to view an exibit she has been wanting to see at the Armory, 145 N. Raymond Ave., Old Pasadena
March 25 – May 13
Installations, mixed media, photography and more, exploring the relationship between artistic and medical world views.

It was small, but interesting.

I then treated her to In-N-out, which she enjoyed very much.

Oh, and here's the website for Grom.  Apparently, the store just opened a few weeks ago - and they gave away free gelato!  How come I did not know about this?!?!?  -Well, apparently, the lines were about two hours deeps at times, so...

I actually passed it the other day, and had some of their Crema di Grom - basically vanilla with chocolate and crushed biscotti - and some of their Almond(!) Granita.  The gelato was very, very, very good.  And the almond granita was spectacular - it was like eating crushed, frozen, slushy almonds.

The pricing is a bit on the high side - a small(!) is just under $5.00, but from all accounts - my own included - it's well worth the splurge.

Back from spending the afternoon and early evening with my mother.  We dropped DS Rob back at UC and then headed to Music Hall.  The first half was all orchestra:

Overture to Candide
Selections from West Side Story
March from The Longest Day
"Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton
Armed Forces Salute
"Battle Hymn of the Republic

Those last 5 numbers were preceeded by Maestro Kunzel's shameless plug for his conducting of the National Memorial Day Concert, 2 weeks from tonight, which we're all to watch on WCET, Channel 48, Cincinnati.

DRs Elmore and Jose were pretty much right about Bebe's line-up:

After the orchestra played the All That Jazz Overture, she came out and did:

"All That Jazz"
"Saga of Jenny" from Lady in the Dark
"I'm a Stranger Here Myself" from One Touch of Venus
"Razzle Dazzle" from Chicago
"Class" from Chicago which some of the Cincinnati blue-hairs sitting near us did NOT appreciate
"A Quiet Thing" from Flora, the Red Menace
"How Lucky Can You Get" from Funny Lady
"Je ne t'Aime Pas"
"Surabaya Johnny" from Happy End
"The World Goes 'Round" from And the World Goes 'Round

Her encore was "Ring Them Bells," which I saw performed by Liza Minnelli on the very same stage about 30 years ago.

There was absolutely NO RAPPORT between Miss Neuwirth and Maestro Kunzel.  When DH Richard and I saw Kristin Chenoweth with the Pops a couple of years ago, they had a real love affair going on, but there was no interaction at all today.  She was complaining of a cold, but I suspect she might have been experiencing some SW Ohio sinus difficulty.

Been tardy all weekend so sorry, But working which was unusual for me.

Question for DR BEN or anyone else who is a member of Actor's Equity.

I saw a movie where one of the actors was appearing in a Broadway musical in a lead role. Only to be fired the day after "opening night" because they got bad reviews. The fired actor walks into the theater to find they they have been replaced.

I told my friend that I was with that it was impossible. Actor's Equity would never permit it.  Even so they would have to be paid off with the remainder of the contract wouldn't they?

Can someone fill in the blanks here?

SPOILER RE THE MOVIE MICHAEL S SAW

I haven't seen the film, but the bigger logic jump as I understand it is that the character was a highly paid model hired to do the musical, and then after getting fired is back being a singing waitress.  Is this what indeed happens in the film?

That can happen.  The actor must be paid four weeks of pay, however.  There's always an out.  On both sides.

But that's not to say that the actor and Equity can challenge the producers, but people can be fired at any time while the show is in rehearsal or performance.

You can be fired for any reason.  And you don't have to be informed as to what that reason is.

However, to fire someone at any time during the process is always a tricky situation for both sides.  Does the actor "admit" to being untalented?  Does the producer admit to hiring someone untalented?  Better to "leave the production due to creative differences" behind the scenes, rather than be fired publicly.

I had a wonderfully wonderful time at THE FULL MONTY this afternoon.  The cast was first rate.  Even the actor who I don't care for personally, was very good in the role of Jerry.  It is interesting that the actor playing Malcolm, who was terrific, is said to be one of the more homophobic actors in our theater community.  Still is romantic duet with Ethan was one of the many highlights of the afternoon.

Rule 32 (E)  of my Equity handbooks reads:  "Either party may terminate the contract at any time on or after the date of the first public performance of the play by giving the other party 14 days written notice...."

If they want the actor to improve....they must (after the first 10 days of public performance) give him notes about how he is failing to perform as directed  If he does not conform by the end of the next performance - and a few other rules etc....he can be given written notice.

Once he has been fired he cannot be required to perform the part or report to the theatre (unless Equity otherwise orders).

An actor, producer, and director cannot give a notice within 7 days of an opening - so if they wanted that guy out and didn't realize it soon enough, they would have to wait until the show opened.

Another question for the NYCers.

A few years ago there was the reality show FAME one of the prizes he received was a lead role in the off-broadway production of Fame on 42nd Street. I did some googling and saw that he did not appear in it. Haremm Lee (?) I think was his name. Anyone know what happened?

I think the actual prize was a chance to audition for the show.  I do remember him being in the running, but I don't think he made it past the final callbacks.  "Grease: YTOTIW" was the first show to cast a lead(s) in a show, off or on Broadway.

I think Playbill.com had some coverage on the process.  Give that site a few searches.

I think there were a few "acting" classes in the FAME tv series...I think the young teacher who was played by Morgan Stevens was only on for a couple of seasons.

And watching the show....I don't think they had anyone around who knew much about acting.   I liked the cast....except for Carol Mayo Jenkins as the English teacher....but NOT for their acting ability....

DR Edisaurus:
When does or movie play Lake Worth? I have been keeping an eye for in in the newspapers.

It was on May 4-10 at the Lae Worth Playhouse. I haven't heard yet whether it's been held over, but so far only 3 theatres have held it over. Unfortunately, a week is not enough to get a word of mouth buss about it, and we don't have the advertising budget to do anything except in the major cities.

But...maybe it's held over?

It opened Friday in Seattle, and will open May 18 for 3 days at Cinema Paradiso in Ft. Lauderdale, if that's anywhere near you.

Michael S - I would imagine that Harlemm Lee would have had to be one of the teachers in FAME ON 42ND STREET had he been offered a part.  There were some chances for the teachers to shine, so I'm as confused as you as to why they didn't use him.

There was also a bit of scandal with Mr. Lee since it turned out he was actually over the age of 30, over the age the age limit to compete in the show.  However, since he was so good, he was kept on even after it had been discovered he had broken the rules.

Good evening lovelies, studlies, H/Ks, DRs, the Grande Mensch, and the G.P. -----

Well, I dressed in khakis, my lovely medium-purple button down shirt, and nice top-siders, and I strolled about for a bit and then met some friends for a 3:30 PM show of the new Spidey 3 .  It was kind of fun and easy entertainment.

And now I shall eat a little Stouffer's and I think watch the Indy film "Shock To The System" (based on the Richard Stevenson book).  I saw the other "Donald Strachey" mystery, and the plot was pretty good, moved along well, had some nice twists, and has 2 very nice hunky leads who manage to find a few excuses to get undressed.

It ain't all bad !

I finished ARTHUR AND THE INVISIBLES early this evening. It's an OK fantasy with lots of big names in the voice cast: Robert De Niro, Madonna, David Bowie among them. Very colorsful and with some humor, but, of course, it can't hold a candle to any of the Pixar films in either writing or production. Still, OK.

I then watched all the special features on the ARTHUR/INVISIBLES DVD. There weren't minute. A couple of music videos, one by Jewel that was passable and a rap video by Elijah which was not. There was a very brief feature on the voice cast for the film, but it was notable by who wasn't photographed (Madonna, DeNiro). Maybe they wanted too much money to appear in this featurette.

I still had more than an hour before the start of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, so I put in another episode of PLANET EARTH on Blu-ray. This one was entitled "Great Plains" and like the others featured not only awesome landscapes but also the wildlife that inhabits the plains regions all over the earth from the Arctic Circle to South Africa. Jaw dropping moments in great numbers in these shows.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES had a very tedious storyline with Lynette and Tom. Carlos and Edie was more interesting.

The cable guide mentioned that one housewife was going to face a health crisis. After the first few minutes of the show, I assumed it was going to be Edie since she said we was nauseous and was late but wasn't pregnant. Who knew who it actually ended up being? Wow!

My mother's recent beef with the United States Postal Service....

She recently sold an item on ebay and hte buyer asked for priority shipping. She obliged the seller and the shipped the order as requested. However, she received an email from the buyer who said she did not recieve it. My mother then went to the post office and chewed on a few tails. The post office refunded her the shipping for she did send it priority and they did not deliver. The purchaser was very impressed with my mother's attention to making sure the item made it to her why it was being held up. Gotta love the post office for screwing up on priority!

However, to fire someone at any time during the process is always a tricky situation for both sides.  Does the actor "admit" to being untalented?  Does the producer admit to hiring someone untalented?  Better to "leave the production due to creative differences" behind the scenes, rather than be fired publicly.

In the movie in question, the producers did, in fact, offer the actor a "face-saving" exit.

(Guess where we took the Grandlads today?)

der Brucer

PS Eldest lad, 10, was quite disturbed by the hero going over to the dark-side plot. I, on the other hand, was annoyed by the quick jerky edits of the action scenes which made the fluidity of the action hard to follow.
