NBC OKs Deal to Save 'Law & Order' Shows

NBC Universal and producer Dick Wolf struck a last-minute deal Sunday to keep "Law & Order" and its two spinoffs on the air, although "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" episodes will first be seen on the USA cable network.
The deal ensures an 18th season of "Law & Order" on NBC. That's second only to "Gunsmoke," which aired from 1955 to 1975 and was the longest-running network drama series on TV.
NBC announces its fall television schedule on Monday, opening a week where all the broadcasters outline next season's plans to advertisers in New York.
NBC had essentially concluded it had room for only two of Wolf's series on next year's schedule. "Law & Order: SVU" has the highest ratings of the three, so that was safe. After some brief conversations about shifting "Law & Order" to Time Warner Inc.'s TNT, the decision was made to keep "Criminal Intent" for USA, said Jeff Zucker, chairman of NBC Universal.
NBC and USA are corporate cousins within NBC Universal, and "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" reruns make up some of its most popular programming. Now USA will be able to premiere a full season's worth of 22 episodes of what had been an established network series, a first for the business. The series is entering its seventh season.
"This was a strategic decision by us," Zucker said. "We are really taking USA to a new stratosphere."
It's not clear when "Criminal Intent" episodes will air on NBC; they will likely be used to fill a hole when a new fall drama fails.

Good morning, all! When the alarm rang this morning, I was in another "lost" dream: driving around in a car with no sense of directon, following an earlier dream involving a bus ride and a lunch hour.
This afternoon, my Mac Man comes back to help me with a hard drive backup and to repair my disabled Stuffit Expander. He was due last week and forgot about me. I put him on hold until today because I had to finish up the chart for BK and at the time DR Jose was still planning a trip south for Mother's Day.
Speaking of DR Jose, I hope to have dinner with him this evening.
TOD: I don't recall any shocking films until the 1970s, but I do remember the shock that I and my friends had as we literally ran from REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE, which we thought at the time was the worst film we'd ever seen. Carson McCullers never misses the chance to pile the southern gothic absurdities a bit much for me, and I don't think she's at her best here. Give me MEMBER OF THE WEDDING and THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER.

Good morning, DR TCB! I've never thought about the show in terms of "eleven o'clock" numbers, since it's to me more of an ensemble comedy like FUNNY THING HAPPENED . . . as opposed to a star vehicle like MAME, wherein the leading character gets a big number near the end of the show.

I watched another shocking film this weekend on DVD--ADVENTURERA! In fact, shock follows shock in this shock-ridden, shocking film! More happens in the first ten minutes of this movie than occur in other entire films. And it doesn't let up from there!
I'm also shocked that I had never heard of ADVENTURERA before DR JRand started talking about it months ago. From what I understand from the DVD extra feature, it was once considered a classic by the likes of Truffaut. As campy and soap opera-ish it is on the surface, it also works on so many other levels. I truly enjoyed it and I thank DR Jrand for recommending it here.

And dear DR Laura...... the next time you stop by here, let me show you all of the details in my bathroom tile, as to why I know that I managed to find the VERY WORST TILE PERSON in all of the Phoenix valley.
I really would have liked the grout lines in the tile to be completely straight...... even if they would then be the only things in the house that were !!

I wasn't too shocked until the scene where the guy is revealed in a room full of feathers and birds with his eyes pecked out, and the camera cuts in closer and closer, very quickly... making it even more frightening. (No wonder I became an editor!) Oh, and the guy who was attacked in the phone booth!
Soon after that, we visted Bodega Bay. I was looking overhead contantly.

Yup, it was the eyes that got me too. We saw it on tv at my grandparents house. At least that's one of the times I saw it. The flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz used to get me too, I had to cover my face until that scene was over, especially when they pulled the straw out of the scarecrow, that even made me cry

It's an uneasy day today. I think around lunch time I'll go to the store and get a huge relish tray to take to my friend's house.
I have a friend who always takes veges instead of something sweet or a casserole. When we've had relatives pass it was always greatly appreciated to have something healthy to snack on rather than just pie, casseroles and ham sandwiches.

This makes me sound so innocent (I was!), but the film BLOW-UP had those models romping around with David Hemmings, and it was the first time I think I ever saw a woman's breasts exposed. I was shocked.
The ending of BONNIE & CLYDE left me sickened and shaken. I had never seen anything like that before, and I was completely wiped out by that.

I see that NBC has renewed LAW & ORDER for its 17th season. As for LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT (which was also on the bubble for renewal), the show will produce a 22 episode season, but the episodes will premiere on the USA network next season and then NBC will get the second runs (presumably to be shown on Saturday nights). I'd almost be willing to bet, however, that once a couple of NBC's new fall shows bomb, they'll bring CI back to the network for the first run episodes.

BTW, for those who are L&O: CI fans, don't forget that NBC has moved the show to Monday night at 10 for the next two weeks (new episodes) with its Tuesday timeslot to host reruns from the previous night.

She said that people will read the obits and then break in when they know the house is empty during the funeral. Maybe you might offer to housesit, if you don't plan on attending the funeral and related services.

My cable company charges $6.95 a month for my cable box/DVR rental. They're in the same box so it's not two different pieces of equipment.
Yes, you can tell the DVR to record every episode of a show or every new episode of a show, very much like Tivo. You can also do searches for shows to see if they're being offered on any channel in the line-up.
The cable guide that comes with my DVR goes eight days ahead. I think Tivo's calendar span is longer, but I'm not sure about that.

Tivo has a 14 day search when you pay for the full-service (I signed up for the life-time plan, which was something like $295. Considering that the monthly was 9.99 when I first got my Tivo and and since risen to 12.99, it will be a bargain at some point. The downside is that it's for the lifetime of the Tivo unit, not my own lifetime. But I think there's an occasional upgrade deal to a more expensive unit that one can transfer the service to--I'm not completely sure about it 'cause I never paid strict attention to the offer.)

Mrs. W, one of 6 children who grew up in my tiny house (built in '23) married and moved to the house next door. We had a family across the street who had 3 sons who were scumbag white trash. One was an alcoholic, one was a crack addict and the third had some other drug problem. He also raped his sister and she had a child by him. They were always in and out of jail and stole things from most of my neighbors, and broke into my house twice.
Mrs. W was always nice to the crack addict, Eddie, and let him do yard work for her. (This is how they would usually case your house, which is why it's important to have someone you trust do your yardwork!) After she died, a lot of family was coming in and out of the house to prepare for the funeral. Eddie snuck in amidst all the people, went down to her basement and unlocked the window. Then, while the funeral was going on (we were at the funeral, too) Eddie broke in and stole her tv and other things he could sell/pawn. Fortunately, the guy who bought the TV tried to pawn it and the serial number registered as stolen (somehow this has never happened when i've been robbed!) and when questioned, the guy who had bought the TV told the police where he'd gotten it and Eddie did a little more jail time.
So, that's a great idea to house sit, and you can tell them that this happened to the neighbor of someone you know.

One reason I have suspicions about the "Forever Stamp' is an uneasy feeling I have that the USPS knows something the American public does not know.
Perhaps it knows it will not, ultimately, lose anything if people buy billions of dollars in "Forever Stamps".
Maybe it will make "First Class" postage less reliable in favor of something else upon which we cannot use "Forever Stamps".
I smell a "scam" and I have only the Bush Administration to blame for my suspicions. Which isn't something I take lately.

LOL! That was a great write-up! But, I loved this season....I do think the best person won, although to be fair it should have been Yau-man and Earl at the end. Not only did I like both people I thought they were the only ones who really seemed to know how to play this game.
I am always surprised at how bitter some of these contestants are, however.

The Forever stamp is, at least, amusing. People screaming to have it, but they're buying a roll of 100, so they'll be gone in, at the most, six months, a year, and rates aren't going to go up again for at least two or three years after these two in a row rate hikes in one year's time (the USPS blames the government for last year's).

I had a nice conversation with the Kritzerland web designer. She'll be doing our alumni site, and boy have her prices gone up since she did Kritzerland. What a bargain that was. She's still giving me a really good rate, but I'd say it would be more than double what I paid for Kritzerland. I still think she's the best deal in town, though, and she's going to make one little section that can be updated by us rather than her - a page with text only like the notes here, but that will be very helpful for current and upcoming events.

I have several hundreds of dollars worth of stamps -- some are unmarked so I don't remember what they were intended to be -- full-value fill-ins until new. higher-rate stamps could be printed or simply supplementary stamps -- such as a 2-cent fill-in to add to an older stamp to meet a higher rate.
Sigh.
I have bunches of odd stamps...and I seldom "mail" anything any more.

The best thing I've found for my allergy troubles is SudaFed -- the kind you have to sign for. I prefer the 24-hour tablet, but don't mind the 12-hour.

This was a human aspect I explored in the play I wrote that we just put on. The theme of the plays was recipes, and my recipe got me thinking about when someone in my family died when I was little, and I was so puzzled that people kept showing up with food.

I rather enjoyed last night's episode even though it was a bit drawn out in Edie's manipulation of Carlos.
The Susan-Gaby arc was fun, if a bit too much filler for what we know -- thanks to prolonged season finale hype -- that there WILL be a double wedding regardless of what went down last night.
Tom and Lynnette did not bore me at all. They are the most interesting couple right now, all things considered, and I'm interested to see if Jason Gedrick's
Rick" returns to the show to continue his romancing of Lynnette.

Laura, that is a good idea. I have also house sat for a person who had a tragedy and they were grateful for I was able to get coffee ready and stuff for them when they returned and they also appreciated the welcoming face amid their grief.

Well, a landmark day for me. I moved yesterday into my own apartment in Hell's Kitchen. And today is my first day in the Manhattan office. Yesterday the play closed. Talk about times of transition! Hopefully things can settle down now and I can visit these parts more frequently.

I was VERY disappointed in last night's episode. What a LETDOWN pre-finale episode!
Yes, there was drama galore on the fate of the preemies. Tough decisions were in the offing and a decision was made. And it was entirely predictable to me.
Yes, there was the troublesome whistleblower who threatened to bring down the senator's presidential run. Predictably, it was handled in the way ALL such incidents are handled. Hooray for the gay lawyer/sibling! I DID appreciate that the character of the senator seemed to want to come clean about his war record and reveal the facts behind his "act of heroism", which -- in fact -- was an act of heroism despite any of his misgivings during the incident.
Yes, there was Nora insisting that her late husband's bastard daughter remain in her house -- maintaining the "viper-in-the-nest" conceit.
Yes, there was the inevitable "daddy's-gonna-still-love-you-but-is-moving-out-of- the-house" arc. Very PREDICTABLE. And WAY cliche!
And finally, there was the drug-addicted former Army medic preparing to go back to active duty for a tour in Iraq because his unit needs him and because it's the right thing to do, as witnessed in the meant-to-be-touching but way-too-mauldin visit to the VA hospital. Sorry for my cynicism, especially for all who were touched by it, but I know a thing or two about the military, and I still cannot get beyond the totally wrongheaded premise that the Army wants this drug-addicted medic back on active duty. It just IS NOT credible in a ZERO TOLERANCE military. The military will help folks with drug problems, but will NOT...repeat NOT...keep them "IN" the service.
I felt the entire episode was forced and it rang horribly false for me.

I, too, thought it was to be the finale....and was rather surprised to see so little happening by the end of the hour. I wondered if they were going to go an extra hour and realized that they weren't because of the following show's advertising.
Perhaps the finale will erase the memory of last night's show.

One reason I have suspicions about the "Forever Stamp' is an uneasy feeling I have that the USPS knows something the American public does not know.
Perhaps it knows it will not, ultimately, lose anything if people buy billions of dollars in "Forever Stamps".
Maybe it will make "First Class" postage less reliable in favor of something else upon which we cannot use "Forever Stamps".
I smell a "scam" and I have only the Bush Administration to blame for my suspicions. Which isn't something I take lately.
Oh I just think people will buy them and stash them away for later when the price of stamps goes up and then forget where they stashed them and have to buy new stamps anyway

This was a human aspect I explored in the play I wrote that we just put on. The theme of the plays was recipes, and my recipe got me thinking about when someone in my family died when I was little, and I was so puzzled that people kept showing up with food.

LOL! That was a great write-up! But, I loved this season....I do think the best person won, although to be fair it should have been Yau-man and Earl at the end. Not only did I like both people I thought they were the only ones who really seemed to know how to play this game.
I am always surprised at how bitter some of these contestants are, however.
I am amazed at how differently we see things. I really did not enjoy this season (i think it was one of the worst). And i did not really care for yauman or earl or actually any of the final 4.
I do think that yauman was a good player. Although he made such a stupid mistake. Why would he think dreamz would keep his word, when yau was then going to vote him out. He should have told dreamz that if he gave him the idol they would vote out cassandra.
I actually think the best players were alex/mookie/edgardo. They just got totally screwed over by dreamz turning on them.
But i will agree with one point you made. Lisi and alex were brutal at the questioning.
I am surprised that nobody voted for cassandra or dreamz. Cassandra seemed nice enough. And often people vote for the nice person (even if they did not win much). And i am surprised that since dreamz 1) knocked off the best player yauman, 2)needed the money the most, and 3) he won the final immunity ... that nobody voted for him.

As a cook, however, it's very true...as meat cooks, in general, it decreases in volume as moisture steams off. There is, however, the "hot dog" anomaly...some franks expand.
And noodles, by virtue of being generally dried and devoid of moisture, grow larger as they absorb moisture.
I blame it all on the laws of physics....but I'm no expert.

Surprisingly, it seems he "did."
I'm amazed that Dreamz lasted as long as he did. He has been one of the key people under consideration for ouster for several weeks...yet nobody ever made a move. I think folks thought he would be an easy ouster.
I'm still perturbed by Jeff Probst's all-too-revealing questions at the various tribal councils. All the plotting, scheming and deal-making are the subjects of his pre-voting questions. I think a case could be made that folks are alerted to things they were not aware of...and I think it spoils the show.

Thanks all for the suggestion. I left work and went to the local grocery. The only vege tray they had made up looked like it should have been eaten yesterday, so I explained what I was doing and they made one up for me on the spot. It looked very nice and I made sure they knew how much I appreciated them doing it with no notice.
My friend wasn't home, they were at the cemetery, but her sister-in-law was there. I don't know her, but we chatted for a while and I left the tray and a card. Her SIL told me they have 80 immediate family members! And that doesn't include aunts and uncles or my friend's family, which is also very big. The family is very connected to law enforcement on several sides, so I'm sure someone will be watching the house during the funeral, but I'll keep the thought in mind.
I live close to my friend's house so I came home for lunch. I better get back to work...glad it's a quiet week

I have heard that Survivor is not doing as well in the ratings. I have also read that reality shows are on the downswing and game shows are in. Time will tell. For NBC... time will tell if that network remains on the air. At times the network reminds me of the old canadian late night comedy show called SCTV. It is a cartoon.
Their primetime lineup is bouyed up by the tired Law and order franchise, ER, Office Heroes and My Name is EArl. Sadly the rest of the lineup is in sorry shape. They are loosing viewers in all dayparts including Leno and Conan. Today show has even slipped a bit and they are bringing on a fourth hour of the show this fall after the soap that shall remain nameless is cancelled. NBC has already alluded to Days being cancelled in 2009. They want more chat shows and infomercials.... YIKES!!!

That guy hit every nail right on the head.
And he made the exact same points i made.
1. this season was not good.
2. Yau should have told dreamz he would vote out cassandra.
Although yau sort of explained himself in the reunion show. He said his pride was his downfall, since he had convinced himsef that dreamz would honor his promise.
I have 2 more points.
1. i don't feel that people did not vote for dreamz because he went back on his word to yauman. Although i feel like he would have come across much better if he (dreamz) had actually intended to honor the deal but just could not at the end.
I feel like dreamz did not have a chance because he screwed over alex/mookie/edgardo. They were not going to vote for him.
2. in the same situation (going for a million dollars) and knowing you would get voted out for sure, how many people would really have given the idol to yau?
I think if yau had really wanted immunity he would have told dreamz they would vote out cassandra. Dreamz grew up poor. This money could help his family. Survivor is a game.
Now being a total liar is not a good thing. But if a person had been fairly honorable up till that point. And they had to choose between their family and honoring a promise that was stupid to begin with (since yau was saying dreamz would be voted out) ... i feel like most people would have gone back on the deal.
I would have been very upset about it. But ultimately there is no way i would have kicked myself out of the game under the circumstances yau set up for himself.

Okay this is surprising me. But we are on the same wave length here.
It has been driving me crazy to have these discussions pre-vote. These should be asked post-vote. It is ridiculous. The questions have been totally leading. And the people have been giving away key strategies before the vote. Stacy basically got herself voted out last week by announcing that "the vote would be split" (what was she thinking).
I totally think that the questiong is not fair. Although these tribals last 3 hours and we only see 5 minutes. But still. I totally agree with you here.

That could be possible Laura. Fragmentation of television is also contributing as is lifestyle changes. Internet has also changed how people have viewed television. I also think the ratings groups such as Neilsen do not take into consideration that people tape, Tivo or DVR programs. However I have heard they may be changing that approach.
One study I was reading is wha tis helping a few of the ABC programs in the ratings is the access to the internet allowing people to watch and episode when it is convenient. It namely cited Ugly Betty. Granted due to my work schedule that is how I have seen it this past season is on the net.

Also the attention span of the younger generation tends to be different than those of the baby boomers and older gen x who prefer a more stable format of defined characters and plot.
My hypothesis is MTV has also contributed to the demise of quality television in the regard that many want their programs fast and flashy and that is turning away a viewer base that is not keen on that concept.

I have several hundreds of dollars worth of stamps -- some are unmarked so I don't remember what they were intended to be -- full-value fill-ins until new. higher-rate stamps could be printed or simply supplementary stamps -- such as a 2-cent fill-in to add to an older stamp to meet a higher rate.
Sigh.
I have bunches of odd stamps...and I seldom "mail" anything any more.
DR Ron Pulliam - "several hundreds of worth of stamps"? Well, I guess you could do what I do when I have "extra" old stamps, I just double them up on the mail I'm sending. And sometimes I even make designs - I put one this way, one the other way, etc. ;)
*However, I'd set the sheets of "unknown" stamps by your door, so that on your next trip to the post office you can take them to find out their value. And, if you happen to have full sheets and/or rolls of them, you may be able to trade them in... If you smile purty and bat your eyes. -Although, when I worked in an office oh so many years ago, I was able to trade is a few sheets of "old" stamps for new ones. And I didn't have smile purty or bat my eyes. ;)

I finished watching "Popular", the second season yesterday afternoon.
There were many, many pleasures to this TV series, with some fascinating characters, some riotous dialogue, and a very good cast.
One surprise I had was learning that Tammy Lynn Michaels, who brilliantly portrayed queen-bitch-of-the-universe Nicole Julian, is none other than the current "wife" of Melissa Etheridge.
The series was termed a "dramedy", and it lived up to the drama part of the term in the second season as the shows became more serious, and better because of that seriousness. The zippy one-liners still got flung and the "messages" weren't as in-your-face as they were, at times, in the first season. It's target audience was always teenagers but there is a great deal to be treasured by us more "mature" viewers, too.
Sadly, the show ended on a rather upsetting cliffhanger and was cancelled after having been promised a third season.
Sigh. Still and all, the two seaons on DVD are well worth having and treasuring.

I agree, they cover too much too fast and I even find it fast. I love a good story whether it is children or adult. I grew up listening to grandparents that would weave stories and allow you sit in some adult conversations and treat you with respect. Sadly you do not see that anymore. I like REading Rainbow and it has its merits but I would prefer they cover no more than two books. I have lost respect for Sesame Street in recent years for they seem to have lost their way. There is not intermediate to Sesame Street. Heck, I remember college students back in the day watching Electric Company becuase it was fun to see actors doing something positive unlike certain celebutramps!
Cartoon network is not help either and I see that channel as a HUGE outlet for advertising.

I would rather watch History Channel or Discovery than PBS sometimes. The pledge breaks are almost annoying and often not even worth watching. Programs they pre-empt for their 'special pledge programs' are far more worthy of viewing.

Granted the 80s had some cheesy and truly bad programming at times but at least it was far better than some of the trash that is on now. bk, I agree with you about psuedoephedrine.. It is truly the only thing that works for allergies. Claritin-D does also for my but it does make me a bit more hyper active. Alavert is a good one.
Claritin and Alavert are different brand names for the same drug(s).
The basic product is an anti-histamine (Loratadine) which is also available as a generic OTC pill.
Only the "-D" versions of both products also contain a decongestant (Pseudoephedrine sulfate)

Back from shipping. The post office workers are VERY confused by some of the changes, and the post office was jammed with people - how annoying. Why couldn't they buy their two-cent stamps last week when they were jamming the post office trying to get every package known to man shipped pre rate change?

And even though I didn't want to, we've had to make a small adjustment on the shipping at Kritzerland. It's still low - 3.75 instead of 3.50 for up to three CDs. The next tier stays the same - 6.00 for around six to seven CDs (I can get those into a flat rate priority envelope), but anything above that has gone up to ten dollars, as it has to go in a priority box, which has the largest rate change.

Don't count on it! The new Postal Reform act makes it easier fore the USPS to raise rates, but limits them to the rate of inflation. The present plan is to provide for more frequent, but smaller, rate increases - expect a 1cent bump every year. The "forever" stamp will make these more frequent rate hikes more managble.

I began my afternoon viewing with RENO 911! Funny season finale with Dangle getting proposed to by his ex-wife's husband. Funny, surprise end to the episode.
The hilarious Teddy was on, and it's always a joy to see him.
There was also a PSA from three of them that made me howl.

When I saw the previews for the film last year, it looks weird and hopelessly violent.
Well, it IS violent, to be sure, but it's breathlessly directed and other than Gibson's fascination with butchering the human body (there's an extended human sacrifice sequence), it's a very compelling and very watchable film.
And it was shot with high definition video cameras rather than film cameras, so the digital image on DVD is flawless.

When I got back from a late lunch, I watched THE TUDORS. A compelling episode as always.
DR Elmore, what is the disease that they called "the sweating sickness." Obviously it's a plague of some kind, but what? Obviousnly not smallpox, but was it bubonic plague or what?

ENTOURAGE had its season finale (although the new season begins in only a few weeks. HBO saved these recent episodes from the end of what was last season) amid Drama's savage reviews for his new TV show and Vince and E still trying to get his movie dream project set up. Fun episode.

Didn't have time to watch anything in its entirety, so I noticed one of the HBO channels showing the 1959 HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES, so I watched twenty minutes or so of it. I really enjoy this version even if there are some major differences between it and the novel.

Canceled shows: CROSSING JORDAN, RAINES, STUDIO 60, BLACK DONNALLEYS.
Not returning until 2008 - LAW & ORDER, MEDIUM , both on Sunday nights after NFL football season is over.
The only shows slid around are the Thursday comedies with 30 ROCK moving to 8:30 and THE OFFICE moving to 9 p.m. and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS which will air Fridays at 10.

NBC has also ordered six episodes of a HEROES spin-off called HEROES: ORIGINS, self-contained shows about new heroes not already a part of the regular series. The most popular character to emerge from these six hours will join the regular series.
The show will air during hiatus periods of the original HEROES.

I suspect there's a bit of friskiness in Mr Gibson's Hollywood past he's hoping the Catholic Church will forget and forgive, and I suspect that's the cause of a lot of his hostility toward groups the Catholic Church has notoriously censured in both the present and the past. Of course, having a demented holocaust-denying father only adds to the man's problems.

Oh, what the heck, before continuing to catch up, or pretending to, I might as well post.
Today, at the market, I managed to become the first to cause our self-checkout lanes to break down.
OK, that's really an exaggeration. I was only the guy overseeing the four self-checkout lanes, helping the customers overcome whatever could go wrong.
But it did take place on my shift!
This is after three (count 'em, three!) shifts overseeing the self-checkout lanes.
Which is b-o-r-i-n-g.
I get paid good money as a checker. I get paid the same amount of money to watch people do what I do better than they do, in order to satisfy their egos and make sure they don't try to stiff the store. There is little job satisfaction in that.
But, back to the breakdown.
Not everything in the store has bar codes attached. Produce, for example. And in-house produced bakery items.
For these items, the customer is asked to push a "button" on the touch screen, which raises a list of pictures of the most popular items (such as bananas, Vidalia onions, that sort of thing), or to refine their search by "typing" on the touch screen "keyboard" the first few letters of what they are purchasing. This brings up new lists of pictures, and hopefully the customer will find what they're purchasing on that list.
Today, at about one in the afternoon (ten in the morning, HHW time) the system broke down. The computer refused to show any pictures, and refused to show a keyboard.
In other words, the computer developed an attitude.
Stacy (a front-end submanager) tried a "robot self-fix" subroutine, but it didn't self-fix, the computer just becams self-fixated. Finally, after Cheryl (a front-end sub-submanager) had been kept on hold for a half-hour by our phone contact on fixing these things, we were told to completely shut it down and that they'd be sending someone to help. Or something.
So, for the last fifty minutes of my shift today, I got to work at a real register, and communicate with real customers while getting all their groceries rung up faster than they could have done it themselves.
It felt good.

One reason I have suspicions about the "Forever Stamp' is an uneasy feeling I have that the USPS knows something the American public does not know.
Perhaps it knows it will not, ultimately, lose anything if people buy billions of dollars in "Forever Stamps".
Maybe it will make "First Class" postage less reliable in favor of something else upon which we cannot use "Forever Stamps".
I smell a "scam" and I have only the Bush Administration to blame for my suspicions. Which isn't something I take lately.
But the Forever Stamps are so pretty!
Just so we're clear on this, the American public would have to buy 2,439,024,390 Forever Stamps in order to spend just one, single solitary billion dollars on them. Since they are most often sold in packs of twenty, that means 301,114,122 packs will have to be sold to reach this goal.
So much for hyperbole.

Whilst I've been sitting here doing work on Ye Olde Laptop, I've been listening to John Williams' brilliant score to the motion picture A.I. Most of you know I feel differently about this film than most do - I think it's wonderful and now may have to watch it again. The CD I'm listening to is an amalgam of the soundtrack CD, the 2 CD Academy promo and a couple of other sources - it's complete, and in show order.

Laura, that is a good idea. I have also house sat for a person who had a tragedy and they were grateful for I was able to get coffee ready and stuff for them when they returned and they also appreciated the welcoming face amid their grief.
Der Brucer house sat when my grandmother died. She had been living with my parents, and my parents were glad to have someone there while we in the family were all at the funeral.

Going over the list of James Beard Foundation Award Winners for this year, books division, (http://jamesbeard.org/awards/awards.php?year=2007&category=1) I'm glad to see that two of my favorite books from the past year are winners:
The Lee Bros. Southern Cookbook, by Matt and Ted Lee,
and The Omnivore's Dilemma, by Michael Pollan.
I still recommend them both, particularly the Pollan.

You're quite welcome! I guess no one in the screenwriting dept. cared about Mr Boleyn's health threat, and I'd guess it was TMI about the Boleyn family health. Sadly, yes, William Compton did die, his servants did steal everything possible before leaving the estate, Anne Hastings did get whatever was left, and Henry did get the chest of mementos. There is, so far as I can see, no factual evidence of any relatonship between Compton and Tallis, but it made a very moving little piece of fiction in the grand scheme of the court of Henry VIII. I loved the Tallis choral piece at the end, both as a token of love and a memoriam to the plague victims; it brought back to me many AIDS services I attended in the 1980s. I thought it was quite a moving episode

Adrian Pasdar's skin looks much better than it ever did in PROFIT.
Yes AVENTURERA's title song was very unique. And yes DR DtM - her talent required the expansion of ANY performance venue. You will be happy to know that for some time a STAGE version of this movie has been kicking around....not sure of its current status...but someday it may be coming to a theatre near YOU!

Since we are in the merry month of May we are suddenly in a whirlwind of school activities,....a week ago Thursday was the "Chamber Choir" orchestra, jazz band etc review.... was Friday night was the Vixter's Musical Theater Club Broadway Review, tonight was the Science Fair, Thursday is Spring concert, ... oh gosh...is it time for the May vote on the school budget? Wouldn't it be terrible if all these talented, talented children couldn't have these opprtunities? Just Vote "Yes"......

Any thoughts on the Tony Nominations that will be announced tomorrow morning? With the way that some of the other awards have been doled out, it seems that LoveMusik may end up being a spoiler of sorts.
I'm sure LOVE/MUSIK will figure in the nominations, but I think the spoiler will be GREY GARDENS. Since it was eligible for all of the other prizes except the Tonys last year, the folks that would have been nominated got nominated last year in those other competitions. GREY GARDENS will get considered in lots of categories this year for the Tonys.

I'm off now to my first rehearsal for "Taming of the Shrew...in Hell!" I saw Pug, the director, today and she said that I'll be used a lot during the opening section. Hmmm...I wonder how. :)

Before prime time started, I put in THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. Just had the urge to see it again, and it's such a fun movie.

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER had a funny season finale. Poor Marshall not getting anything to eat at his wedding was funny. And the Robin-Ted story was very interesting and involving.
I think the show will get renewed for another season on CBS, but if it didn't, this would be a nice finale episode.
Anyway, we'll find out on Wednesday.

'24' had an amped up episode with lots of action and suspense. With only two hours left, the two primary targets are still in play. Don't know what's going to happen.

HEROES had another very involving hour, too, which I really enjoyed. Yes, more death (and I happened to see something in the previews for next week that was very upsetting. Won't mention any names but it looked like another certain death which will NOT make me happy.)
The deaths on the show tonight were in some cases sad but I didn't have huge emotional investments in those characters.

My guess is that the only musical that could cause an upset for a potential win if nominated for Best Musical is Legally Blonde, but (whatever I may feel) Legally Blonde is a long shot for nomination in the book and score categories.

I just checked to see if my professor had posted the grades for the final and our final grade...
I am proud to say I had one of hte highest scores on the final.. I got 96 out of 100 and I ended up with a 94% in the class which is an A!!!
I am a very happy camper!!!!!!!

I'm giving Tewkes his bedtime walk tonight and decided to stick my hand in the mailbox, even though it had already been delivered, because I had seen UPS roaming about earlier that afternoon. Nothing from UPS, but the mailman had been back. My fingers clutched a small packet. The return address from Krtizerland! It was a CD of the animated film DAYDREAMER which has a great title song...uh, Daydreamer...sung by Bob Goulet. Some may remember I strenuously lobbied for Daydreamer to be included on Mr. Guy Haines' last album. Hopefully, Mr. Haines and his producer, Mr. Kimmel, will heed my advice for Mr. Haines' upcoming third album which I hope is up-coming soon!

Well, I went to my first rehearsal for "Taming of the Shrew...In Hell!" It was fun. I have three lines...so far. One of them is "How now, Grumio!" I'm one of the three servants, also known as "the damned." I can't really explain the concept because I don't quite understand it all, myself. We'll just see what happens. ::) It'll be a lot of fun, that's for sure. :D
