Well, you've read the notes, the notes were lithe and lean with abs and buns of steel, and now it has come to your attention that you must post until the cows come home.

George's stage career gets curiouser and curiouser:
first he's attending to man-eat-man action in Cannibal , now he's stoking fires in hell preparing to roast a screwshrew. Come summer, Dawn of The Evil Dead will probably have a west coast production and George might move up to playing an entree. If they ever bring Kafka to the stage, George is a shoo-in for the cockroach chorus!

I wonder what delight is planned for the Easter Season?

Maureen Stapleton:

Mamma Mae in "Bye Bye Birdie".

If Anna/Panni were posting she would no doubt list Maureen's role in the award-winning  "Miss Rose White" (for which Panni wrote the screen play), which starred Kyra Sedgewick.

And Edisaurus will most likely be unable to resist Maureen's turn as Emma Goldman in "Reds".

Ballroom, based on Queen of the Stardust Ballroom, returned to the stage via the Long Beach Civic Light Opera in 1992, once again retitled Queen of the Stardust Ballroom.  The plot songs were reinstated, and more material was written.

The production starred Tyne Daly in the Stapleton role, and Charles Durning returning as her suitor.  I found their pairing remarkable in their lack of chemestry.  She was fantastic, he was fantastic, and together they were fantastic minus fantastic.  That's the way things go sometimes.

Maureen Stapleton--
REDS
PLAZA SUITE
THE GATHERING
QUEEN OF THE STARDUST BALLROOM
TELL ME WHERE IT HURTS
MISS ROSE WHITE

I also have a recording of Stapleton doing THE ROSE TATTOO.  It was her early theatrical signature role and she is devastating.  I wish I had seen her do it on stage.

Charles Durning--
THE STING
DOG DAY AFTERNOON
TOOTSIE
QUEEN OF THE STARDUST BALLROOM
THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS (the only reason to watch this movie)

Durning was also wonderful in his occasional role as the priest on EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND.  And I also like him in the Burt Reynolds sitcom EVENING SHADE.

I saw BALLROOM about two weeks after it opened.  I was sort of disappointed with it in that Dorothy Louden didn't have enough musical numbers, but I still loved the show overall.

I also remember the sticker shock when the first ads appeared.  $25 top ticket!  I remember saying to myself, "Oh, no!  I'll never afford to see this!"  It was an extravagant price for me back then.

I've always wondered if that story about CBS demanding that Stapleton's character die at the end of BALLROOM because they felt she should be punished for sleeping with a married man was a myth or not.  It doesn't really make sense--she was a widow.  If anyone could be construed as "sinning", it was Durning's character.  To me, the ending was a bittersweet touch to the story.  It never felt to me that it was tacked on.

Maureen Stapleton is one of those actresses that can impress even in junk, like her role in THE FAN. The movie is barely better than a slasher film (despite the big stars), but Stapleton is magnetic.

I think she's at her best in INTERIORS, but as bk said, I can't remember a bad performance from her.

I loved what she did in the first episode of PLAZA SUITE, but I would also like to have seen her in the other two playlets, especially the last one (repeating her Broadway roles).

Maureen Stapleton....where to start...of course those listed including:

QUEEN OF THE STARDUST BALLROOM
BYE BYE BIRDIE

and

AIRPORT - that Hayes got the Oscar over her shocks me every time I watch the movie.  Of course she is playing opposite Van Heflin who is also superb...but as has been mentioned her last scene at the airport when she is informed her husband is on the plane....wow!

THE FUGITIVE KIND - showing who is the actress playing opposite Miss Joanne Woodward

BUT I loved her MOST as THE ELECTRIC GRANDMOTHER!!

Looking through Charles Durning's credits I see that I have seen very little, if any, of his films. I did see DOOMSDAY VOYAGE but don't recall who he played in it...but I am sure he was good.

As for Maureen Stapleton I have seen her in many things, and she was always wonderful...but I can think of no particular titles.

Rants are unmitigated and hostile by nature.  I prefer the civility of facts.

Hmmm...and unwarranted criticism of others is civil?  And over something so silly as a small rant about the forever stamp?  Good grief.  You may not realize it, but you've insulted a number of people with this pettiness, including our host who often embarks upon a rant or two.  None of them are ever "personally insulting" as you go out of your way to be on occasion.

I saw the Long Beach production of Queen of the Stardust Ballroom.  It was dreadful in just about every way, despite the talents of Miss Daly and Mr. Durning.  The choreography and direction were tepid, at best, and one could, at least, see why Mr. Bennett went the route he went.  He went too far, yes, but I understand why.  I can't find my copy of Not Since Carrie (it's buried in a box in the garage or in storage) but I do remember that while the show was out of town the audience could not go with Who Gave You Permission as the opening of a musical.  It works well for the TV movie, but he was right about the stage version - when Tyne came out and sang it, you don't know anything about her character and it just presents her as an angry, hurt woman and then you have the Job Application, which is another downer.  THEN, the show picks up.  Bennett, I believe, starts the show considerably after the death of her husband - you hear about it, but you don't get the two downer songs.  But, I think it was a mistake to cut Suddenly It's You.  Of course, Fifty Percent was written FOR the stage.

I'm not sure how many people here watch this.  But was anybody else annoyed that Apolo (my fav) got penalized for being "too sexy".  I thought that dance was by far the best of the night. And i thought that he was by far the best of the night. And it made me sort of mad that he didn't get a perfect score, when other performances (which i did not think were as good) did.

To me 60/60 should be for perfection. I guess it's hard that they can only give an 8, 9 or 10. But while i think that laila and joey did well, i do not think their dances deserved 60/60 (which they both got).

I've never checked dialidol results for DANCING WITH THE STARS.  But i am very pleased that apolo is ranked as #1. I was expecting laila and ian to be the B2, but wasn't really sure if that was how it would play out. But that is what dialidol has listed.

As for the Tony Nominations...

I knew that Grey Gardens and Spring Awakening were locks in the Best Musical category, and that the remaining to slots could go either or any way.  And it looks like they did.

I'm actually very happy with the nominations.  Even though some favorites were left out - Kristin Chenoweth, Harold Prince, Pirate Queen (NOT!) - I don't feel there are any shocks.  The shocks, if any, will come the night of the ceremony.  *I would have been surprised is LoveMusik had snagged a Best Musical nom.

And I'm glad that Journey's End received the nods that it did.  And I hope that it wins the Tony for best Revival of a Play.  And it would also be neat to see Boyd Gaines take home another one too.

Well...  The cookies are baked and cooled.  Almost.  And since she's running late, she's leaving everything out on the counter - the bowls, the cookie sheets, the rolling pin, etc....  Along with a note on the fridge, "Sorry for the mess.  I'll finish up baking when I get home tonight."

-Of course, she won't be back until 9:30pm.  Seven and a half hours from now.  Hmm...

Now, I really don't mind cleaning and washing dishes.  Really I don't.  And I don't ming being asked to clean up - especially if someone is on a tight schedule.  That can happen.  But to leave a mess on the counters and a note of the fridge while I'm sitting ten feet away... And she knows that I could be home all day... Well... ???

In any case, I'll clean up.  Heck, it's something to do.  And with all the sprinkling sugar that ended up on the floor, I need to sweep that up before the ants come back.  And they will come back.

DR RLP - I have seen CSI MIAMI.....but I have not seen UGLY BETTY because I usually watch THE OFFICE and MY NAME IS EARL and I don't have the newfangled doo dad that will allow me to watch it on my own time....perhaps during some of the rerun season.
Plan on the DVD set coming out before the next season starts.  It's been one of the funniest shows I've seen in years.

Good Afternoon!

Bowls, measuring cups, cookie sheets(!), spatulas, etc. have been washed are currently nestled in the drying rack by the sink.

The counters have been wiped down and disinfected and wiped down again.*

The stove top has been wiped down and disinfected and wiped down again.*  -I'm still trying to figure out how a 1/2 cup of flour ended up in one of the burners - and we have a gas stove too, so I made sure to clean that up ASAP.

*Can you tell that my parents are in the food service industry?

And then I even Mop'd and Glo'd the kitchen floor and the living room.  As well as vacuumed the rug in the living room. And I even made a pass through my bedroom too.

Whew!

But that's a good Whew!

More on the self-checkout shutdown at Super G -

It turns out that someone in Toronto was working on correcting a glitch in the computer programming, and in the process accidentally discombobulated all of the self-checkout computers for our entire chain of stores, both Super G and Giant.

Stop-N-Shop, which is technically part of the same chain, has their central computer hub located somewhere other than Toronto, so they got off without a glitch.

It took the computer tech a couple of hours to get our registers back on line, and then he had to get to another store an hours drive away.  But the lanes are open again.

All this goes to prove is that the international urge to centralize everything is causing more problems than it solves.

In the last year, we've had a spinach scare (with so much of the packaged spinach coming from a single source, in California), a peanut butter scare (from a single source, this time in Georgia), and a dog food scare
(single source, in Canada again).

I would think that someone would get the idea that single-sourcing resources, be they food items or computer programs, is inherently a bad idea.  There should be at least one back-up plan, if not two or three.

On the bright side, since Jose is not Canadian, this is one time he can confidently disclaim any blame in the matter.

It was a short day of cart-wrangling today.  Very pleasant weather, if a little breezy and polloney.

We currently have a sale going on, five cases of Coke (any variety) for $11.  The catch, that the customer has to buy five cases, no more and no less, is not stopping our little old ladies from obtaining the quencher of their choice en masse.  While not as heavy as the Snapple cases, the cases of Coke aren't exactly lightweight.  The smiles on the little old ladies faces when I offer to help them move the cases from their carts into their cars is another of my job perks.

Happy sigh.

Had some fun viewing experiences this afternoon.

I began by finishing THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA which I had begun last night. I never tire of this film. The performances are terrific, the sophisticated air of the piece is just intoxicating to me. And even though the surprises in the script aren't surprises any more, I still get emotional at the reactions to the various revelations.

It has come to my attention that today is "don't buy gas day."  I had no idea, but I support it completely.  Are people listening?  No, they're at the gas station topping off their tanks.  Do you know how much money the oil companies would lose if everyone actually DID boycott today?  And tomorrow?  Let me tell you how fast prices would begin to drop.  There is strength in numbers, but people are just hopeless.  They can't go a day without topping off their stupid tanks.  They couldn't get gas yesterday?  Or tomorrow?  It has to be today?

Next, I watched LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT from last evening.

Great guest star cast last night: Rita Moreno, Roy Sheider, Mark-Linn Baker, Tony Goldwyn, J. Smith Cameron, just to name a few. And some shocking revelations, too.

I wouldn't be surprised if Moreno's performance doesn't net her an Emmy nomination.

A Shell station in the City of San Francisco was featured on yesterday's news for having the highest prices in the state....$4.63 for a gallon of regular (IIRC).  Across the street, another station was selling for $3.69/gal. of regular.

The manager of the station was interviewed and it was revealed that Shell Oil raised his rent so much that his only recourse was to increase the price-per-gallon or he would not be making any profit at all.  Of course he's not getting more than a few customers a day...and those folks who were asked if they hadn't noticed the cheaper prices across the street professed they hadn't checked, but were in a hurry and there was a line across the street.

The manager indicated he's selling the station back to Shell and will seek another line of work.

Me neither. Never seen any of them.

The only series I follow is THE CLOSER, and, well...I kind of have to do that.

"Jericho" is the one I watched.  Jericho is a town in Kansas and the setting of this tale about nuclear explosions taking out some major U.S. cities...all at the hands of an internal terrorist group bent on overthrowing the government and establishing a new one, from what I can gather from information revealed thus far (and, as it turns out, all we'll ever get).

Ultimately, though, it's a tale of survival.  Jericho is an a agricultural town...and its neighbors are desperate for food and trade.  Jericho can barely feed itself and cannot trade as much food as the neighbors want.  So...the neighbors launch a war against them.

It's a creepy, but very plausible look at how our society may break down in the wake of national disaster on huge scale.

It should have done better, but CBS put the show on a lengthy hiatus, along the lines of what ABC did with "Lost", and "Jericho" lost its audience base (more for some soap-operaish storylines before the hiatus, IMO.).  I didn't watch again until I was channel-surfing a few weeks back and landed on CBS....and found myself riveted by the new conflict (new in light of what had been going on just before it went on hiatus).  The show actually got better and better, but the audience didn't care.

They are final cancellation notices. Shows like SIX DEGREES, THE NINE, etc. were technically "on hiatus" with indefinite plans to return at a future date. This makes it official that they won't be back next season. (MEN IN TREES which is also on hiatus HAS been renewed.)

ABC hasn't annoucned if the shows will be burned off this summer either on-air or on the net or neither. We never did see the last episodes of EYES two seasons ago.

THE CLASS is the one I DID watch. Sorry to see it go since it was one of the few shows with a regular gay character in the story mix, and the show was finiding its footing near the end of its run.

It also did about as well as any show has done in the 8:30 time slot. Even TWO AND A HALF MEN, which played there last night for its season finale, lost about 3 million viewers playing at that earlier time against other competition.

I've been going over my songs for this musical reading I'm doing in a couple of weeks - I wish I'd printed them out sooner - some of this stuff is totally out of my range, and, for my money, the character would NEVER sing this high, producing that kind of sound.  It would be like having Harold Hill sing high A's.  Why?  So, I've written a strong note to the writer and basically told him I'm completely uncomfortable trying to sing lots of G's and A's and, frankly, even F's.  I asked him if it were going to be possible to transpose my songs - we'll see what he has to say, but if the answer is no, I believe I'll pull out.

Here are the ABC cancellations, straight out of the VARIETY story:

Gone are "According to Jim," "George Lopez," "Knights of Prosperity," "Big Day," "Daybreak," "The Nine," "Help Me Help You," "In Case of Emergency," "Six Degrees" and "What About Brian."

The only one of these that i am sad about is WHAT ABOUT BRIAN, which i quite liked.

Btw, is ACCORDING TO JIM definitely cancelled?   The article i read said it was not in the fall schdule. But that no decision had been made.

As for CBS, I am sort of sad that CLOSE TO HOME is gone.  It wasn't my favorite show, but it's one i enjoyed when i watched it.

I don't quite get the "don't buy gas" boycott. Wouldn't you just buy gas the next day and the results would be the same?

How about a "don't drive" day? Now *that* would have some impact...

If nobody bought gas for one day - and I mean nobody - what would that cost the oil companies?  Millions, I'd say.

Just spoke to the author, who assured me there would be no problems transposing whatever I needed.  So, about three or four numbers are going down, down, down.

We all do little things for each other around here all the time.  It's a good group.  When we weren't sure what was happening with the lease here a few months ago, the first thing we all started looking for was another apartment that all four of us could move into (again).

I knew about the gas boycott, having received e-mails about it from everyone on the planet...however I forgot that it was today.

Like Edisaurus said, what good would it do since everyone who doesn't fill up today would just do it on another day...so the same amount of gas would be purchased...you would simply need to "use" less gas rather then just not buy it on once particular day.

I do refuse to believe that there is a "legitimate" reason for these outrageous prices and it seems odd to me that all of the grandstanding politicians who start out saying they are going to get to the bottom of it.....never  seem to, nor do you ever hear them talk about it again. Probably too busy driving the brand new Jaguar up to their brand new vacation home that they mysteriously just got once they stopped spouting off about gas prices.

Just my two cents worth.

That's because everytime the government steps in to do something about the gas prices, the oil companies suddenly, magically, drop the prices - that's what happened last year - the prices dropped almost a dollar within six weeks because the government started making noises.  So, they backed off - and prices went back up.  They need to ream these people, and ream them well.

Exactly.

There should be a "no drive" day, and then a day's worth of gas would not be consumed per person. As it is, I'm not buying gas today, because I don't need it today. I'll gas up tomorrow, but I haven't had any impact on the oil industry by not buying it today.
Title: Re:IT HAS COME TO MY ATTENTION

It has come to my attention that today is "don't buy gas day."  I had no idea, but I support it completely.  Are people listening?  No, they're at the gas station topping off their tanks.  Do you know how much money the oil companies would lose if everyone actually DID boycott today?  And tomorrow?  Let me tell you how fast prices would begin to drop.  There is strength in numbers, but people are just hopeless.  They can't go a day without topping off their stupid tanks.  They couldn't get gas yesterday?  Or tomorrow?  It has to be today?

A. If most people stopped buying gas today or tomorrow, the oil companies would suffer very little - folks would just have to buy more the day after.

B. Recommended emergency preparedness in areas like Southern CA suggest keeping your tank at least half full.

If people really want to "hurt the oil companies" then replace a "don't buy gas day" with a "don't drive day"!

It's a creepy, but very plausible look at how our society may break down in the wake of national disaster on huge scale.

Not only that, it does a nice job in addressing how individuals will react to that breakdown - some fall apart without the structure, others, like Dale, grow to meet the new demands.

Well, few would accuse me of not "keeping up" with the news, and I hadn't heard about it either. Of course my usual reaction to a boycott is to go buy; and, to confirm Edisaurus's suspicions, I never met a picket line I wouldn't cross.

If the government really wants to reduce gasoline consumption, then raise the CAFE standards (and include SUVs and pick-ups in the mix) and put a hefty retail tax to push gasoline prices to at $5.00/gallon to stimuate consumer behavior modification. (At a mere $3.00/gallon, my daughter still drives alone in her 7 passanger mini-van  over 100 miles a day for work.)

I'm surprised the composer and others involved didn't check your recordings before asking you to participate.  They give a very good indication of your range and comfort zone.

Of course, you could always pull the trick I pulled back in the sixth grade, when we were all supposed to sing for the ceremony noting our graduation from Elementary school to Jr. High.  My voice was already changing, so instead of letting it crack, whenever the note got too high I just transposed to an octave lower.  It freaked out the girls who were sitting in the row right in front of me, but there was no way I was going to keep my mouth shut, not with my parents and grandparents attending.  (Lip-synching wasn't even heard of back then... whadaya mean, that wasn't Natalie Wood singing on the West Side Story soundtrack?!!   :o)

So far, checking through the list up to 1984, I know I've six of the books in my library.  That's out of about 120 winners dating back to 1967.

It's facinating how many of the books that have won (up to that time) that I've never heard of.  How fleeting fame can be.

I don't have much to say.  I went to the visitation for my friend's son. Literally hundreds of people there with a line out the door and down the sidewalk.  There was such raw emotion, it was really heartbreaking.

Had some interesting viewing this evening. I began with some additional special features on the SANSHO THE BAILIFF DVD. There was an interview with the first assistant director about working on the film. Always great to interview folks who were actually on a film set and know what they're talking about.

I also watched a lengthy video critique of the film by a Japanese film critic. Had some interesting information to impart. Though he conisders the film a masterwork, he doesn't find it Mizoguchi's best film as many other critics do. He gave some interesting reasons why he didn't.

I had time enough to be able to watch another episode in the PLANET EARTH set. This one was "Caves," and it certainly was fascinating. Because of the low light levels, much of the photography in this episode did have that "picture window" depth that the other HD episodes have had, but it was still beautifully done.

IDOL random comments:

Melinda definitely the best of the night. She used her three songs to show many colors in her voice and her ability to finesse and belt with the best of them. She also had the most difficult song in the first two rounds. As usual, she came through with flying colors.

Blake and Jordin did well with their songs, but for me, they gave each song the same color (unlike Melinda). Jordin is all about belting at the top of her voice. She can do it, and she didn't crack, but it gets tiresome. Blake's boy band stylings are going to probably get him into the finals. He is fun to watch and listen to, but again, nothing new to offer

I would like to fire every one of those backup singers. THEY ARE TOO LOUD often obliterating the vocal of the leading singer. For both Jordin and Blake, it was sometimes hard to tell who was singing the highest notes. I think often people unschooled in singing don't know whose voice it is they're listening to. In one of Blake's songs (the second one, I think), their oversinging masked some bum notes he was hitting.

I think there should never be backup singers during a competitive round. We need to have no question about whose voioce is doing the vocalizing.

Well, my untrained ear was frequently pulled to the back-ups; it seems when the back-ups are up-fronts we have a group act, not a solo performace.

You got my vote on ban the back-ups!

For DearReaderLaura:

I talked with my son-in-law who is a contractor specializing in re-models. He said no reputable contractor would agree to to a tile surround without pulling the dry-wall; if the tile is mounted to dry wall and not the special tile-back walling, the tiles will start falling off in about four years.

And I cannot be convinced that the lowering of gas prices that occured just as we were voting last time was a coincidence...cause they went right back up aftewards.

Not that I am a conspiracy theorist or anything...but really, now.

Gasoline prices are always higher in the summer months - the demand is at a yearly peak and the government regulations dictate a more expensive gasoline formulation.

Come fall, the demand drops, cheaper formualtions are marketed, and retail costs go down - all without benefit of conspiracy.

For the 2006 election, the worldwide price of crude did a large slide from July to October thanks to OPEC (them fereners). After the market bottomed out, the Arabs decided to help pull the price back up and cut back on production - crude went up and gas prices rose - without any help from a US conspiracy.

And it should be noted that gasoline prices do not follow a national conspiracy pattern. Retail gasoline prices here in DE are LOWER today than they were a year ago! You guys in WA and CA are paying about 50 cents a gallon more at the pump than do I in Delaware or my daughter in MD.

We still have not reached the annual inflation adjusted prices set in 1980 ( but we will if prices stay where they are).

Opinion... How would you view this...

Today at work they brought some foodstuff over from a retreat the librarians had and the staff was invited to partake. I slipped to the back and made a sandwich and a bowl of fruit for my lunch.

I started to put some fruit in a bowl and one woman threatened to stab me with a fork if i touched the fruit. She thought she was being cute but I was not amused. I reported this to her super and to mine.. My super was not too concerned but it truly bothered me. She could have suggested it in another way than threatening me with a fork. How would you read this?

Gone are "According to Jim," "George Lopez," "Knights of Prosperity," "Big Day," "Daybreak," "The Nine," "Help Me Help You," "In Case of Emergency," "Six Degrees" and "What About Brian."

A few of I have never seen... I was not a fan of According to Jim or George Lopez...

Knights of Prosperity I thought had a promising premise but quickly fizzled as did Six Degrees.
