Well, you've read the notes, the notes noteworthy, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they've been asked to write a book, and they are - it's called When The Cows Come Home by The Cows.

Hi, Danise! I'm up because one of the cats just crashed landed on the piano. That's a new way of getting me up for their 5 oclock treat.

How are things going with Mom?

Hi Edisaurus,

Mom is still with us.  I thought she was going to leave us there.  Her fingers and mouth were turning grey but now they are back to normal color and the nurse said that she could last up to a week like this.

I don't know what to hope for.  I have got to go home at some point and check on the poor dogs.  I haven't been home since Sunday and I have to get  the mail out of the box.  I wasn't planning on being gone this long.

I don't know what to do.

I'm glad that Cillaliz found her office furniture.  :)

I have those 2 ten pound dry dog feeders in the house and I don't think they could eat all of that but since I've never left them with that much food before, I'm not sure.

They should also have lots of water but I'd like to give them some fresh.

I may try to make a quick run home this morning.

Obviously, without the draw of a big name like Ben (Get it, Big Ben?), the early morning group, gathering at HHW, has dwindled considerably.

Well, it seems today's WOD can either mean "laughing loudly" OR "catching food in one's mouth."

Perhaps if bk does both simultaneously during his important lunch, it will have a positive effect?
Title: Re:I COULD WRITE A BOOK
Post by: Charles Pogue on May 17, 2007, 05:31:48 AM
BK, I loved the movie VENUS.  I admire Forrest Whitaker; but I was really hoping this year would be O'Toole's year for the Oscar.  I was tallying it up the other day; since moving back to Ky. I have been to the theatre to see live plays all over the place 45 times; I have been in a movie theatre only once -- that was to see VENUS.

There are just too many great book covers to single one out.  I have often bought a book just based on its cover.  I have lots of Rafael Sabatini swashbuckling covers; historical novel covers, mystery covers, adventure and fantasy covers...certainly the great Frank Frazetta covers of the Edgar Rice Burroughs paperbacks that came out in the sixties were stunning and sort of became a gauge for fantasy illustration right up to today.

Good morning, all!  I've finally begun reading all of the Farley Granger bio and I'm nearly finished.  I liked the FIRST IMPRESSIONS gossip, but the whole book is a lot of fun.  I was up too late reading about his touring with Eva LeGallienne's National Rep in the 1960s.  They played in Cincinnati and I wish I'd seen a performance of THE SEAGULL or RING ROUND THE MOON.

Today, I schlep some things down to Toyland and make another stop at the NYPL.  After my heavy partying last night, I will be glad to come home and veg out.

BK, Rodney Gilfry lives outside Los Angeles. I see in his 2007 calendar that he's doing a MERRY WIDOW in Dallas beginning on Nov 29, and I have no idea how long he will be there for rehearsals.  He's a wonderful guy, and he might be interested in performing at the benefit.  He and Jason are god friends; is Mr Graae going to appear?

DR Danise, you go on with your life.  Your mother is in good hands and you have other things to care for and errands to run.  Tell her you love her and you'll be back as soon as possible, carry your cell phone, and be ready for any contingency.  You must keep your life in as orderly a fashion as possible because it's going to get more complicated shortly.

I really really liked last night's show. From the beginning when jack announced he would kill the Others to the end when Charlie finished his list of the best moments of his life (that last one gave me a tear in my eye).

I disagree with DR MattH. I don't find charlie's situation dire.  Anything can happen. Since a season is only 30=60 days long there is plenty of room for him to stay on.  In fact i really hope he does. Because that moment when he kissed claire was one of the best acting moments he's had.

Now i am curious who those women are at the end holding him?

And will he pull the switch?

And i am very curious to see what happens when the Others arrive at camp.

As for my IDOL voting experience, Kelly Clarkson, the first IDOL, is the only singer I've ever supported who won the whole thing. In every successive year, the people I've liked have gotten eliminated either in the final competition (Clay Aiken, Bo Bice) or earlier (Elliott Yamin and this year Melinda Doolittle).

TOD:  The Artificial Man, a sci-fi classic by L.P. Davies (made into a lamentable motion picture with Christopher George called Project X, not the Matthew Broderick one).  It was  Scholastic Book Club feature probably around 1969 or so and you could also order a poster of the cover, which I did and had displayed in my bedroom for years.  A man's face was subdivided with differences in each division.  Great book--read it if you haven't.

TOD - Asking a librarian to name her/his favorite book jacket is like asking a parent to name a favorite child or a pet-lover to name a favorite dog or cat.  So, instead, I thought I'd tell y'all about some of the interesting things I've done with book jackets.  One winter, for a bulletin board, I cut them into snowflakes.  With an elementary teacher, who was helping me develop fun things for Kids in College to do at the academic library I managed, I made them into jigsaw puzzles for the children to take home.

BTW, BK's title for today's notes is the title of one of my favorite Rodgers and Hart songs  :D

Well, I got out of the other furniture deal.  They are nickel and diming me with service fees, storage fees etc.  I could argue about it, but I'm still so far ahead with the new deal than where I would have been if I had  stayed in this deal and added the other pieces that I just don't care. Plus it's a local store and I will need to do business with them in the future, so I'm glad I left it on good terms, even if I'm out a few bucks.

I am surprised but a lot of people on the televisionwithoutpity board seem to dislike jordin.

MANY of us don't believe in "transferring our votes".  It's not a winner takes all contest for all viewers.

The ONLY reason I watched "Idol" last year was Elliott Yamin.  When Elliott left, I left.

The ONLY reason I watched "Idol" this year was Melinda Doolittle (and earlier, that included Lakisha Jones).  When Melinda left, I left.

I truly don't care now who wins "Idol" because it's now a joke to me.  Blake?  Gimme a break!  He's a "Johnny One-Note" with a beat-box skill that wears thin after one song.

Jordin, whom I've thought extremely lackluster the past few weeks, may actually have a future beyond "Idol"...but, like Kelly, she'll probably need to shake the confines of the "Idol" machine before "it" happens for her.

The one good thing about Mindy Doo's ouster is that she is now artistically free to make whatever kind of recording deal she wants to.  She must tour with "Idol", of course.  Then she's off to the races.

Transfer my votes?  Outrageous notion.  I wouldn't waste five cents on either of the two remaining contestants.

I was up too late reading about his touring with Eva LeGallienne's National Rep in the 1960s.

When I was in college studying music in the mid '70's, I decided to study orchestration one summer. The guy I studied with was the pianist in the pops orchestra I worked for. I asked him because I liked his arrangements. He had never taught anyone, and didn't really know what to do apart from recommending several books. But he did put me to work doing copying for a production of Alice in Eva LeGalliene. I had no idea who she was or how she ended up working with someone in Atlanta, but he seemed to be very honored to be associated with her.

Since I love Alice in Wonderland, I felt lucky to be working on it, although I remember I wasn't that impressed by the songs.

Jennifer, this show has a history of killing off major characters.  Charlie's time may very well be coming to an end.  It may just be that those two ladies will be the ones who kill him after he attempts to flip that switch.

As for "the Others" reaching the camp, I'm not certain I should mention what I saw in the previews...but I don't think it will happen like that.

In another forum where "Idol" has been discussed this season, one of the contributors posted that it doesn't matter what anyone thinks of various singers....that they get as far as they get because America preferred them over others.  This writer felt that the pending tour would revitalize a number of the former contestants, including the inexplicably popular Sanjaya.  I was compelled (!) to respond:

"America will NOT sustain Sanjaya's recording contracts. Bunches and bunches of 'tweens' and 'teens' voted hundreds of times each for Sanjaya...and then Blake...and Jordin. But when it comes to these guys' first CD or concerts, those 'tweens' and 'teens' won't be buying hundreds and hundreds of CDs & tickets each. And thatta will be thatta. It's happened every year.

"Taylor Hicks'  CD tanked, and his career is in the doldrums.

"Katharine McPhee's CD tanked, and her career is in the doldrums.

"Ruben Studdard is so lost in the doldrums that no one may ever see him again.

"Fantasia is still trying to recapture the audience that catapulted her to fame and deserted her when her CD came out.  She's a game girl, and I hope she succeeds.  She's doing "The Color Purple" on tour and I hear she's been well-received.

"Diana deGarmo...almost 18 now, I think...has been on Broadway in a musical.

"Justin Guarini has tried very hard to rescue some professional semblance of his former status.  He can be seen on the TV Guide channel chatting with other 'Idol' also-rans...about 'Idol'.  Not exactly what he thought he'd be doing now, I'm sure.

"Jordin MAY have a career....in time.  But she's NOT the best by any stretch of the imagination ... not compared to Melinda.

"Blake....????  I see no future for Blake beyond this flareup.  One CD and he'll be toast (24 tracks of same-o, same-o intonations and beat-box novelties -- yawn).

"Melinda will do well in a niche market -- R&B, more than likely.  If Hollywood is smart, she'll get some title songs to sing and make some HUGE hits a la Shirley Bassey.

"'Idol' also-rans who have done very well include Clay Aiken, who has done better financially than any of them -- winners and runners-up.  Kelly may have passed him, though.  But she owes the resurgence of her career to Clay.  His concerts were sold out across the country.  She couldn't give copies of her first CD away.  She joined up and "opened" for him (performed first).  Suddenly, she found a base audience and she soared.

"Chris Daughtry can laugh and laugh and laugh.  Ousted early last season, he's outsold Taylor, Katherine and just about every other 'Idol' winner except Kelly and Carrie....and he may pass Carrie very soon.

"There's a reason Elliott Yamin performed on tonight's show instead of Katherine or Taylor.  He's hot.  They're not

"Elliott went home as second runner-up because America voted and preferred someone else...but apparently not enough to sustain careers.

"As with Clay and Chris and Elliott, they're lining up and paying to listen to and see the ones they didn't vote for!

"(I fully expect one or both of last year's finalists to perform in next week's finale, but both will be pretty much overshadowed by the traditional parade of  big-name stars).

"Enjoy Sanjaya and Jordin and Blake while you can."

RE: last night's AMERICAN IDOL finale results.

DR RonP, I get that you are annoyed that America voted out the best singer.  And I get that you've decided not to vote.  But I don't really get your bitterness.  The best person does not always win.  Does it have to make you happy?  No.  But from what i understand the votes were very close.  Just because others like jordin and blake better does that make them wrong?

American Idol is not just about finding the person with the best voice.  It's about finding someone who viewers connect with.  I know that you and DR MattH loved Elliot last year. But he did nothing for me.  He had a very nice voice. But i didn't find he had much personality or charisma. And i didn't care for his look.

This year i know that you both (and many many people) loved melinda.  Now i've heard some people say that simon's insistance for her to go to the F2 is what harmed her (i still say that was a huge boost for her).  But just because she had a fantastic voice (which i will agree with) does not mean that everyone had to love her.  I personally liked her a lot, but just found her sort of dull.  Every song was beautifully sung but there was no real difference between any song (to me).

I almost never prefer the winner (and didn't care much for taylor last year and Clay was my favorite).  But we can't necessarily be sure which winners and runners-up will tank.

I really like blake and just because you don't care for his style doesn't mean you have to diss him.  I thought his piece last night with his dad was special.  Viewers like him and think he is different.  Does he have the best voice in the world. No.  And maybe that is what bothers you.  But i think this show is about finding stars.  Should melinda have been in the finals. Probably.  But still jordin and blake aren't as bad as you say.

I'm not totally sure how i feel about the finale. There were a lot of things i liked. But some things that bugged me.

First, re: what DR FJL said about them letting neve campbell's character die.  I was a bit surprised that alison didn't prevent it. However Neve was warned so many times.  To me it actually made little sense that she wouldn't pay attention to the warnings. I think any normal person would. Even if they didn't believe in alison's abilties.

I guess i'm not so surprised that neve's character died (i mean it was inevitable since she knew her killer and would have let him in even if she was being cautious).  I guess i just would have liked it to happen (the death) but still have her either believing alison or at least taking precautions.

The other thing that bugged me is that usually these cases are not usually so obvious.  I don't know about anyone else, but to me from the beginning of the show it was COMPLETELY OBVIOUS that Jason Priestly's character was the killer.  It's never that obvious. But this time it was.

I was also annoyed that joe was "fired" and that his lawyer "dumped" him. I just don't see those things happening.
I would have liked to see that play out the way it was going last week.

I did like the ending though with alison marching in and telling them what was what.  Although since she had already dreamt part of that scene i wonder why she never told her boss that his "friend" was going to take over. I know she has to be careful. But i would have thought she would have told him.

I can't believe we will have to wait 8 months to see how alison is received now. I wonder if they will continue it from where they left off. Or just take us 8 months into the future.

I guess that she will be redeemed. But will she now work out in the open?

Good Afternoon!

Well...

I arrived at the rehearsal studio at 9:30.  We started with the coaching at 9:45.  The auditions proper started right at 10:30.  At 11:05, I heard,  "Thank You, Jose."

-What?

"We're done for the day."

Even the reader was caught off guard that we were finished so early.

So, since the sun was out, I took a nice walk through midtown up to Columbus Circle. I stopped into Whole Foods, picked up some groceries - great sale this week on Organic Mesclun mix! - then hopped on the D Train back home.

I've had my lunch - some of the leftover "Szechuan Wonton Sandwich" - and now I'm re-watching Tuesday night's "Idol" with one of my roomies.

Nothing like some unexpected free hours - and on the clock too!  :)

As for the Topic of the Day...

Stephen King's "It" and "Pet Sematary"

"Catcher in the Rye" - I was so familiar with the brick red paperback cover with the orange/gold lettering, that the first time I saw the original hardcover art, I had to make it was the same book by J. D. Salinger.

Michael Chabon's books tend have eye-catching art.

Transfer my votes?  Outrageous notion.  I wouldn't waste five cents on either of the two remaining contestants.

An interesting outlook - that many transfer to the political arena. Often people mistake one's failure to make a "forced" selection as hostility; often it simply means
"no preference". I suspect that a great many of the votes  over a season of Idol are cast for a "favorite son" - once the "favorite" is eliminated, there is no longer a particular interest in the ultimate outcome (whether the remaining candidates are equally attractive, or are unattractive).

I am intrigued by the "problem" of a record producer. If I were searching for an American Idol to sign for a contract, how do I assign weighting factors for "CD" potential (vocal quality) as opposed to "Concert/Show" potential - "star" quality.  If I am not mistaken, today's recording industry is strongly driven by "concert" potential (more so than in the 50-60s where radio (and later TV) air play was a driving factor in record sales.

O course, in politics, even if our "favorite" fails at an early stage, we may still feel a vested interest in the ultimate outcome - not so with a talent contest where the ultimate outcome can be of no consequence to many viewers.

The AI experience also makes little provision for talent that is most enjoyed in small doses - I can't envision enjoying a whole concert of Blake Lewis, but one Blake number in a Melinda concert might be fun!

Back to "Idol" for a sec...

I've been rewatching Tuesday night's show with my roomie, and we both noticed some things.  -And confirmed some things I thought I heard the first time.  And they both concern Melinda.

My roomies and I all though Melinda was not at her best during "I Believe in You and Me".  She was actually pitchy in places - especially on the last note... then she let her vibrato creep in to "correct" it.

And we were all surprised at how much the judges praised her for that performance.

We also think we caught her stumbling and/or forgetting her words during the second phrase of "I'm A Woman".  We even rewound the DVR a couple of times and turned up the volume to make sure it wasn't just a mic thing.

However, we all thought she did very well with "Nutbush".  She rocked!

And as for Blake...

If he wins, I think he'll do quite well.  As long as the "AI" machine doesn't mess him up.  His style is very "in" right now as his Maroon Five and Robin Thicke selections demonstrated.

Alas, if he does win, I'm not sure the typical "AI" first single/song would really work for him.  At least if it's the typical pop-inspirational-power ballad.  -None of which, so far, have really been great songs, and some haven't even been good.

Blake would be a truly unique "AI" winner.  And I also sense that he's smart enough to know that he can't make a career as a one trick pony.  But, then again, I don't think of him as a one trick pony now.  He can not beat box.

And as for Jordin...

She truly does have a wonderful voice.  However, even though she's praised for "just being 17", I can hear the "17-year old" voice.  -It's that just under-pitch, under-supported thing she does when she sings softly and in her low to mid range.

I just hope - whether she wins or not - that she doesn't end up burning out her vocal cords with one powerhouse vocal after another.  She's got a lot of growing to do both physically and musically.  And, hopefully, if those two aspects don't age at the same pace, there will be somebody there to tell her so if she doesn't notice it herself.

I think she'd make a good "AI" winner.  But it's gonna take something and someone special to make her "break out".

And as for Melinda...

I liked Melinda a lot.  But as others have mentioned, there was sometimes something "too perfect" about her voice.  She undoubtedly had the best voice in the competition - she has training, she knows what she can do, and, more importantly, she knows what she can't do.  Alas, I think her humility and meekness may have caused her not to take more risks during the competition.  When they announced that she was doing, "Nutbush," I truly had no idea what to expect.  And, to my ears, it was her best performance of the night.  (I just wish they could have put in her a better blouse - that top did not flatter her at all.)

She will undoubtedly have a career, but, like Jordin - and even like Lakisha - it will take some creative marketing and repertoire to help "break out", and sustain a career after a CD or two.

DR Jose, you indicate Blake can "not" beat box.

Yes, he can...but when he has, he's been -- IMO -- the weakest performer on the stage.  The LAST time he did "not" beat box, he was in the bottom three.  That was three weeks ago.

He has "beat-boxed" in every song since.

His first song Tuesday night was "amped" to enhance the vocal.  He and Jordin, both, relied heavily upon backup singers in one or more of their songs...so much so that it was difficult to hear that vocal glitches were beng covered.

And finally...

Just because "we" don't buy their CDs, doesn't mean "they" are not successful - at least in the eyes and coffers of the record companies.  I mean, every time I look at a current Billboard, Rolling Stone or Virgin "Top 20" listing, I don't even recognize half of the artists/groups that are topping the charts.  -And then when I look over a column and see how long some of those albums have been on the charts... 20 weeks? - Really?

And what's even "scarier" is that even with the very high turnover on the R&B and Rap Charts, if an artist manages to make it to the Top 20 even for one week, that already means they've made a decent chunk of change.

And then there's the Country charts...

And, in conclusion - Whew!...

Careers take years to build.  Years.  We're only on Season Six of "Idol".  Who knows if somewhere down the line some of the past winners and losers end up making and re-making a career for themselves over the next six seasons?

Der Brucer - I certainly don't mean that we're supposed to care about all lead characters. But I guess I've tended to see MEDIUM as wanting the audience to care about its lead and be invested in things going right for her and her family.

It's an interesting dilemma this "careers" and time business.

Most "careers" don't get the kind of substantial boost that the intensely hyped "American Idol" show offers.  I don't see how one can compare the career path of an "Idol" winner to any other career path out there.

If 60 million votes are cast and someone "wins" the most votes, I'd certainly expect 30,000,001 people to buy the first CD the winner issues.  This simply does not happen.  They don't turn up at the concerts in droves, either.

Of course, 60 million votes does not in any way reflect the total number of people voting.  I've read on the boards at "Idol" website that some voters are casting up to 500 votes each for Jordin or Blake.

So...let's say that 12,000,000 voted....they're still not going to selll 6,000,001 CDs, sad to say.

As for my earlier breakdown on who's done well and who hasn't, I have Grammys that Clarkson has won and the CMA awards Underwood has won...the phenomenal concert successes of Clay Aiken to contrast to the dismal  CD sales of the other "winners"...from which to draw my conclusions.

Of course time will tell...Justin Guarini may be ALL the rage in another five years.

;)

Interesting, DR Jose, that you indicate Blake can "not" beat box.

Yes, he can...and when he has, he's been the weakest performer on the stage.  The LAST time he did "not" beat box, he was in the bottom three.  That was three weeks ago.

He has "beat-boxed" in every song since.

But then you bring up whether "America" disliked the performer or the song choice.  Or both.

I don't think Blake has any delusions that he has a "killer voice".  He does what he does, and he does it well.  Which, alas, is the one thing that's bugged me about "Idol" from the beginning...

There is really no such thing as an "All-Around Artist".  Yes, it's nice know that someone can sing a song from each of the past decades, and emulate certain artists, but there's no way a recording artist can make a career out of singing "The Great and Not-So-Great American Songbook Of the Past 50 Years."

I would love to see "AI" change gears one season and have each and every song choice chosen by the contestants, and to not have those choices pigeon-holed due some weekly theme or artist tribute.  Not everyone can sing everything very well.  A singer may be able to sing all types of music, but they can't sing everything with the same level of comfortability and "fit".  And as the Bon Jovi and Barry Gibb weeks shown, sometimes there's really no good song to choose.

I would really like to see true individual talents show their individual talents.  I would have loved to hear Lakisha rip into a Gospel song.  I would have loved to hear Melinda sing something she keeps in her proverbial back pocket.  Heck, I even think Chris Richardson had one or two great performances/songs in him that he never got a chance to show.

And remember when "Idol" started off, and they were concentrating more of the repertoire choices from the music of the 1950s-1980s?  Even "Idol" has reinvented itself to keep with today's music scene.

His first song Tuesday night was "amped" to enhance the vocal.  He and Jordin, both, relied heavily upon backup singers in one or more of their songs...so much so that it was difficult to hear that vocal glitches were beng covered.

Well, the vocal for "Roxanne" was basically the original "Police" track, and I have a sense that the producers had more to do with the "amped" sound rather than Blake.

...And didn't Melinda have back-up singers during "I'm A Woman"?

...And just why do they have to have the back-up singers in the first place?  And, again, I'm pretty sure that's more a producer's choice rather than one made by the contestants.  -Heck, they have back-up vocals during Hollywood week.

...And just like it is in most theatres today, the mix is not determined by the people singing on stage, nor by the person waving his baton in the pit.  It's all in the hands and ears of the person at the soundboard.  -Remember that amazingly out of tune fiddle player that one week?  That LOUD out of tune fiddle player?

Well, I did see MEDIUM, and I guess I'm lost as to what made it a controversial episode for you, DR FJL.

Let me say that in one area I was completely fooled, but I fooled myself.

I was totally convinced that the entire episode was going to be a long dream Allison was having about her secret being revealed, and that she'd wake up with all the right answers but her secret would still be safe.

I continued to think this until the very end of the episode also because Devalos and Scanlon were so harsh with her, a woman who has saved their bacon time and again. Over and over, they doubt her, and she's always been right in the end. But over and over, they seem to get disappointed when her visions don't come out exactly as seen instead of waiting for pieces of the puzzle to drop into place.

Frankly, once I realized it wasn't all a dream, I was DELIGHTED with Allison's attitude at the end of the show. She had been treated like DIRT by those she considered her friends. Basically, she was on her own to do whatever she could to get to the bottom of the crime.

You want to be disappointed by someone? Let's put Devalos and Scanlon on the hot seat. They both were SCHMUCKS for leaving her body for the buzzards to pick apart. I have never been more disappointed by two characters in a show in my life. To hell with the both of THEM.

CSI: NY had one of the best episodes of the season despite having an outlandish premise of the CSI headquarters being taken over so easily by a group of IRA gangsters out to recover their coke and weaponry that was being stores at CSI.

But the three agents working on the inside being able to befuddle the bad guys using their wits and their skills science instead of guns was COOL. And the two CSIs in the field also had to use their wits to eventually get the upper hand.

A very impressively written, acted, and directed episode to ring down a good season.

Among other things, regarding the attitude at the end, I felt that the attitude was unfeeling, as if to say "my pride and emotional well-being is more important than someone else's life."  While for most people in real life that would be the case, I'm bothered by that attitude on this particular character.   And I felt the writers of the episode truly believe that to be the case.  After the comments from both of you, i guess I'll have to watch again - maybe I misunderstood the ending.

TOTD:
Other than "coffee table books" I doubt I've bought or judged a book by its cover. My reading material is usually selected from reviews, referrals or because I know the earlier work of the author.  I'm more likely to look at the spine of a book than at the cover as I brouse the shelves.

My favourite authors are Clive Barker and Tim Winton. I really have no idea what is on the cover of the books - other than the titles.

About 15 or 20 years ago I did a production of RING ROUND THE MOON (Yes, Mr. Barnum they had plays way back then).  The audiences adored the production; however we had so many cast changes, director changes, blocking changes, and in-fighting among the cast that we hated every minute of the production.  To this day, everyone involved refers to it as RING ROUND THE TOILET.

DR MattH, I think DR FJL explained why he was a bit upset.  I think basically in a nutshell it is odd that alison let neve campbell's character die.  I mean obviously she tried to warn her.  But she did not camp out in front of her hotel room.  And it was basically implied that she died and then alison was vindicated. Like it was a fair trade.

I watched the LOST special (no spoilers). It was on here at 7pm.

It was basically just a recap. But it was done by the producers.  ANd they sort of just reminded us of where we were to this point.  I like this kind of show. Because it gives us insight into what the producers are thinking. Plus sometimes they clarify things that they think are obvious, but that i did not realize (or did not remember).

Really looking forward to next week's finale.

RE: last night's MEDIUM

What I really wonder is if this is how the real Allison Dubois was "outed"?  And did her husband really live through an office shooting and get fired?  Those are the sorts of questions that I wonder about.

I know I usually put spoiler space. But if i had known that you hadn't watched yet (being a finale and all) i would have been even more careful.  Once people get crazy posting about something here it's hard to control!

Well,  I am now a bit crabby due to the fact that I bought a slew of tanning sessions at my gym North Salem branch last summer...I used maybe one or two of them, and now they tell me that I cannot use the rest of them because, under the new system they have, the tans expired. What!! I have been buying tanning sessions at that gym for years, and because I rarely used them they had accumulated, and now all of a sudden they expire!!...and no refund because they say there is no way to prove I purchased the tans nor how many of them I used up (they conveniently tossed all of the tanning cards of all the members who had bought tans under the old system. Evidently the members had a certain amount of days in which to switch the old tans they bought over to the new tanning system (you would think that would be done automatically).

I made the manager of the gym very angry at me (I stayed very calm  but he sort of lost his cool), so I don't suppose I will go to that branch anymore (thankfully I use the South Salem gym more than this one in North Salem).

But really, how dare they just up and abscond with my money like that.

Of course this was the gym that was requiring each member to "rent" a gym towel at each visit for a nominal fee so as to stave of the bird flu.

I had no idea MEDIUM is based on a real person.   Thanks for the info.  Was it ever confirmed in real life that she had those abilities?

Yes, she does.

I recommend:

We Are Their Heaven by Allison Dubois  ;D

Her earlier book Don't Kiss Them Goodbye describes her discovery of her gift and her earlier life.  ;D

SPOILER

I've finally "caught up" on last night's programming and watched "Medium."

I liked the episode a lot.  I can see Joe basically losing both his lawyer and his job because of the circumstances.

I do, also, TIRE of Allison's being treated badly by the people who have relied upon her.  I understood Scanlon's needing to distance himself, but I'd like to have seen him seriously work with her to plot things out and see where her dreams might be leading.

It's strange to me that they don't do that.  Equally strange is when they so easily dismiss her dreams when they know full well they ALWAYS mean "something."

I liked the typical Glen Gordon Caron ending...and I thought she was talking to the new D.A., rather than Scanlon, when she said, "You can thank me later."

Oh, pook.  Do you, then, read our posts on the topic?

If so, you'll know her husband was in a hostage situation on the show in which some people were murdered.

Real life?  Based on what you've read?

RE: the real alison dubois.

She is quite famous. You've probably seen her on talk shows and just never realized it.

For some reason i always thought the show was simply loosely based on her and did not use real scenarios. But it would be very interesting to know for sure!

RE: the season finale of GHOST WHISPERER

I was trying to find a recap somewhere because the show was complicated. But i couldn't find one that was longer than 2 lines.

If you do a search below and type in the show's name you can read some comments that we made on the day.

This is basically the ending though.

Melinda and the professor try to find out what the tragedy is that will happen on may 11th.

The week before i believe we found out that many tragedies had occured on that date in different years (last season's plane crash being one).

Anyhow this man comes to town and brings a bunch of special children, who were affected by these tragedies. They were the lone survivors. And they were all having weird visions. And were quite traumatized.

Anyhow the man needs melinda to bring the little girl from the plane crash so all the kids can be together.

Melinda realizes that a dead woman she has been talking to is the man's wife (she died in a ferry accident and he owned the ferry and was supposed to be on it).

Anyhow at the end of the show melinda and the professor realize that the man has let gabriel (the creepy guy who is trying to bring people to the bad side) take all the kids to the memorial for the plane crash.

This is where the next accident is to occur.

The children march in the procession when all of a sudden massive winds strike.  And melinda rushes towards the kids to save them.

A big pole thing hits her and she is dead.

Okay this was a freaky part. And i was thinking she was going to be dead next season.

Anyhow the kids all touch hands and touch her.

Oh i forgot to mention that all the kids were having visions of melinda and had drawn her. That is how the man knew to get in touch with her.

Anyhow also the man's wife spoke to him through melinda and she told him to help melinda.

Okay so back to melinda being dead. While she was dead i think it was her father who told her she had a brother.

So the kids bring her back to life. And she is lying there.

And the end was something like melinda looking up and realizing that gabriel is her brother.

Time will tell.

I also received the Tyrone Power Box Set today, and watched SON OF FURY....nothing about Frances in the "interview" section....it's as if she doesn't exist - but she sure does a nice job in the movie....although her performance wasn't mentioned by DR RLP or DR MATTH when they watched the movie....

I don't remember which ones DR Ron Pulliam has watched, but I can tell you exactly why I haven't mentioned Frances. I haven't watched SON OF FURY yet. The only one out of the box that I've watched is PRINCE OF FOXES. I have SON OF FURY out as the next one to watch, but with BECKET here now and VENUS that I must get to tomorrow, SON OF FURY will not be happening in the next couple of days.

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]

SPOILER
[/move]

I'm sorry, but I don't understand that kind of thinking at all. She went above and beyond the call of duty in trying to warn this woman, a woman who betrayed her friendship for the sake of a story, a headline, a byline, and a possible book deal. I don't know what you folks expect from her, but *I* think it's unrealistic for you to think she should have done anything other than what she did. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree about this.

I began my evening with EPisode #5 in the PLANET EARTH box. This one was entitled "Deserts," and it again featured astounding photography and fascinating information on desert life with plants and animals. The Blu-ray did have that "pop" aspect of the photography that distinguishes true high definition images.

Next, I finished TO CATCH A THIEF. Edith Head's gown extravaganza in the masked ball sequence did look stupendous in Technicolor. All of Grace Kelly's gowns throughout the film looked as if she had been poured into them.

No wonder Edith was so upset when she wasn't granted permission to design Grace's wedding gown.

Well you didn't get bird flu!

Which brings to mind this joke:

The Reverend goes to visit one of his elderly parishioners, a woman who for years played music at services.  She still has her little portable Hammond in the living room.  So he walks in and she leaves to make tea for them, when what does he notice but on top of the Hammond a large bowl of water, on top of which is floating...a condom!  So the lady comes back in and the Reverend, as gingerly as possible, asks the old lady, "What is that?"  And she gushes, "Isn't that incredible?  I found it in the park a few weeks ago and the package said 'place on organ, keep wet, prevents the spread of disease.'  And wouldn't you know, I haven't had the flu all winter!"

And then she remarks that she thought the kids were being gathered together so she could save them, when in fact they were gathered together to save her!
