Well, you've read the notes, the notes were meaty, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - let me tell you, the cows know from meat.

And the word of the day is: RECONDITE!
Mata Hari, having lived her life as a RECONDITE dancer-slash-spy, finally came to an EROTIC END when she tried to seduce an entire firing squad.

TOD:

I believe the saying is that it doesn't matter how much meat you have, as what you do with it!

That having been said, I enjoy many different kinds of meat.  Beef, in many forms, is up there.  Pork is good.  Chicken is good.  Venison can be very nice.  I've enjoyed lamb on many occasions.

Der Brucer tried goat once, but wasn't impressed.  But he may have just been kidding.

I opened today's note and my eye went to my name and the word stupid in the same sentence and I wondered what I had done. I was relieve to find out that it was my fictional namesake.

RE: last night's DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES finale

SPOILERS

*

*

I have not had a chance to read anyone else's comments yet. But here are mine.

The show was good. But not great for me.

I actually liked victor and was disapointed that things turned out that way so soon.

I thought the whole marcia cross baby thing was completely obvious from the first or second scene.  I really think they completely gave it away in the second scene by having her hubby declare he would raise someone else's baby.  Now i suppose the writers might have wanted people to think that bree had been unfaithful or had gotten pregnant by someone else before the wedding. but come on.  They gave away too much. And it would have been such a great reveal.

As for the edie thing, well that did surprise me. I could maybe see her doing that if she had caught gabby and carlos. But to me it seemed fake.  Plus i know edie schemes, but since she wanted carlos, and knew he wanted a baby, i actually thought it was a bit fake for her to scam him. I don't necessarily think she would have done that.

I"m not 100% sure but i think she is gone. Although i guess a suicide attempt could still be a meaningful story. Interesting.

And as for susan and mike's wedding. It was cute. But i would have much rather them have a double wedding with gabby. This seemed very rushed. It wasn't about the money. But i would have liked to have their friends there.

I'm glad to see that STUDIO 60 will be back starting this thursday.

And tonight's HEROES apparently goes over by 5 minutes.

Also, I believe tomorrow's BOSTON LEGAL is postponed to next week. And that DANCING WITH THE STARS will be on from 9-11pm, so not to go up against AMERICAN IDOL.

Good morning, all!  I have to run down to Toyland for a bit and then haul myself back here to continue with the guidelines.  Here's my outline:

I.  Introduction to the Edition
      A.  Motivation and Goals
      B.  Why the need for an edition of Herbert and Kern?
      C.  Product
      D.  Ancillary Publications
II. Editorial Principles
      A.  Challenges
      B.  Text and Script
      C.  Source Valuation
      D.  Criteria for Inclusion
      E.  Editor's Responsibilities
III. Editorial Practice
      A.  Edited Score and Verbal Text
      B.  Critical Report
               1.  General Structure
               2.  Sources
               3.  List of Sources and Sigla
               4.  Commentary Section
      C.  Categories of Editorial Decision/Documentation
               1.  Evaluation of Variant Readings
               2.  Equalization
               3.  Correction of Errors
               4.  Additions and Changes
IV.  Editorial Attention to Verbal Texts
V.   Introductory Essay
         A.  The Work
         B.  The Critical Method
         C.  Performance Practice
VI.  Piano Reduction/Report

I'm in the midst of III. Editorial Practice, caught up in sigla, which is a new term to me, but I've never had any ambitions in musicology before 2002!  I need to run to Toyland for a few necessary references and getback here and finish III.

TOD:  I can't be bothered now.  Perhaps later.

But before I go, observations/questions:  Might I have reached an age (47) where having caffeinated Diet coke at night is bad for me?

And why is it impossible to order a decaf Diet Coke at a place which requires a two-drink minimum?  (At $5 a glass, shouldn't they be able to take the caffeine out?)

Still, the show was well worth it.  But maybe, in the future, i'll have ginger ale as my drink minimum.  :)

I am back. I spent much of the morning reconfiguring my computer at work. It was acting wonky before I left so IT decided to reinstall Windows. It seems to have fixed things but I needed to re-personalize my desktop, etc.

I haven't caught up AT ALL. I have much work here on my desk and also at this here site.

I do know that I missed Francois' birthday. Happy Day to the French Man.

Vibes to Danise. I don't know what they are for since I'm not caught up but it seems as if she needs them.

Later, gaters.

P.S. We had a wonderful time.

Good morning dear Esteemed, wise, ravaged-by-AOL, Safaried, and pecs-of-man-meat BK --

I personally happen to think that AOL is a very large, very bloated, and by now very unneeded corporation...... and one of the most intrusive and troublesome of all of the ISPs around.  It started out when a lot of people were very intimidated by the "nuts & bolts" of navigating around the web, or opening an email.

I actually have a good friend in Pasadena, who was amazed at how I could log on at his house, check my personal email from his computer (using a "webmail" feature that Cox.net has), and surf the web just by opening Internet Explorer.... All of which don't cost me anything above just my basic Cox cable service.  He actually thought that he couldn't access the web without going through his "AOL entry point."

Monday morning greetings!  I called in sick today so that I could see the dentist about something that has turned out to be nothing and to get DS Rob back to see our family doctor.  He had a very rough day yesterday with his sore throat and swollen glands, all to be expected says Dr. Frazer.

TOD - filet mignon wrapped in bacon, which we're going to have for dinner tonight along with baked potatoes and green beans.

Also, prime rib, the end cut, medium well.  And English cut pot roast cooked all afternoon with potatoes and carrots.  Actually, there's not much meat I don't like, even liver and onions prepared by my mother.

As for the TOD :

The last "New York" strip steak I had (with the Grande Mensch) at Ruth's Chris...

The Pounded Steak with country gravy at M & F in Hollywood....

A great recipe that I have for slow-braised brisket with caramelized onions (after the brisket has marinated for 2 days in a J. Child marinade).

I've been on AOL since my introduction to the World Wide Wed, but my problems have been relatively minor.

My DSL contract with Bell South allows me to retain AOL for free, and I have kept my AOL address since it's just easier to stay there.

So, I won't be bad mouthing AOL. I've had good results with them for many years.

I trust she wasn't a teenager at the time she babysat you?

My mother's Swiss Steak with mashed potatoes and fresh green beans (cooked with onion and bacon) or peas.  Yum!

Dear TCB:  If you eat meat of any kind -- rare, medium or well -- you are engaging in "cannibalism."

Those of us who eat meat "rare" or "medium rare" do so for its nutritional value -- none of which it has cooked well or charred.

No, she was in her 80s and grew up on the prairie in North Dakota, she had great stories.  One of my favorites was about the man who got bit by a snake so he bit the snake back. The man lived and the snake died...

Actually, Ron, to be a cannibal, you'd have to be a human eating human flesh or an animal eating the flesh of a like animal.

As for the Topic of the Day...

Beef, Pork, Chicken, Lamb, Veal.. Heck, even goat... It's all good when prepared well.

Are we including "Fish" as meat?  -Just wondering about the aforementioned "Eel".  ;)

As for the specifics...

The osso bucco at Becco.  The slow-roasted pork at Becco.  The bisteca Fiorentina at Becco.  -Notice a theme here? ;)

The goat (chivo tacos from the taco cart up the street.  *The New York Times just reviewed one of the other trucks down on 96th Street.  Looks like the "roach coach" is going legit!

North Carolina-style pulled pork BBQ.  Strangely, some of the best NC-style I've had has been in VA.

My mom used to make a Chinese Style Pot Roast - basically a beef roast braised in soy, five spice and star anise.  Soooo good.  And, I would also like the pieces of carrots and celery that braised along with the meat.

Pink's hot dogs.
Philippe's French Dip - I liked the Lamb Version with Bleu Cheese.  Bun  double-dipped in jus, of course.  Although, the original beef version if quite wonderful too.
The conchinita pibil - pork braised in sour orange juice - from the little stand near my friend's house.  -DR Cason may know what I'm talking about - it's across the street from the Albertson's.
An In-N-Out Burger.  :)

I don't think I will watch the VERONICA MARS finale live. Here it is on from 10pm-midnight. I may watch the first hour.

I'm not sure if i will watch HEROES live or not.  It has been on here at 8pm in the past. But because the same channel has 24 they are showing it at 10pm. Or i can catch it at 9pm on NBC. I usually like taping that one because so much happens, sometimes i like to rewind.

Today is a holiday here (Victoria Day).  I just went out to lunch with a bunch of family members.   I know i will definitely watch DANCING WITH THE STARS at 8pm.  And I still have BROTHERS & SISTERS from last night.

I watched CAPTAIN FROM CASTILLE last night....this is the movie that my parents saw on their FIRST date.

I listened to some of Mr Nick Redman's commentary, but then I got interested in the movie and had to turn it off.  Mr Redman certainly has a very nice accent.  Mr Rudy Behlmer also had some nice things to say.

BUT - the featurette on the this DVD was titled Tyrone Power's Leading Ladies with some nice CLIPS...but the writer claimed that Power was under contract to FOX for "30 years".....so he either signed that contract in 1928 when he was 14...OR he was under contract to FOX for ten years after he bit the dust....

Featurette was written by someone named Bryan Cooper.

As for a vegetarian food is concerned...

Are we talking vegan? lacto-ovo? lacto? etc., etc., etc...

In any case...  I'm a big fan of the vegetarian cuisine of southern India.  I'm constantly amazed at how lentils, rice and vegetables can be transformed into some truly delicious eats like dosas...

There's a place around the corner from DR elmore's pad called the Hampton Chutney Co. (http://www.hamptonchutney.com).  They specialize in dosas and uttapams topped or filled with various fillings, some traditional, some not so traditional.  It's a not a true Indian restaurant, but I'd say it's a good starter place.  -Oh, and they do offer grilled chicken as a filling/topping if you'd like your protein from something other than rice and lentils.

And the Zen Palate (http://zenpalate.com) chain here in NYC - and soon to be in L.A.! - also has some amazing vegetarian dishes.

Hyperbole seems to be the rule these days.  Last week, Simon took Jordin to task for sining a 60-year-old song (originally sung by Rose-Royce).

Jordin was confused and asked if he thought the 1970s was too old a period for her to be singing.  I read at least one column by someone who suggested Jordin was "talking back" and should have minded her tongue.

I think Simon should have been bitch-slapped by everyone for having ZERO math skills.  The song Jordin sang was from the 1970s...and was anything other than "old ladyish."

I need travel advcie:  What's the best way (other than by car :) ) to take a day trip form Manhattan to Atlantic City?  Most likely on a Thursday.  I know buses go from the Port Authority, but I hear that some hotels offer special deals - anyone know if that's true?

DR FJL, I know there's a train that travels several times a day to AC out of Philly, but I'm not sure where to make the connection.

Oh, and the gelato and granita from Grom.

*Although, I'm going to have to monitor how their front end is shaping up.  It all seems to still be a bit haphazard and disorganized behind the counter.  Even when the lines are short - just two or three people deep - it can take about 10 minutes to get your order in.  And then since they're using paddles instead of scoops, the serving portions tend be a bit inconsistent.  -And when you're paying just under $5.00 for a small, well...  *Although, it looks like a lot of people have caught on, and have started to get the hand-packed Take Home packs.  For the price of a Large cup/cone, you can get a small Take Home container that equal to about four large "paddles".  And the medium Take Home pack is one quart!  Alas, all that hand-packing also slows up the line.

Additionally, the counter basically come right to the sidewalk, so the waiting area is also a bit funky.  Hopefully, as the staff settles into a routine, they should be ready for the undoubtedly longer lines as the temps warm up.

A bunch of the casinos and some travel companies offer daily junkets.   For a certain amount of money you get round trip bus fare plus some money/tokens for gambling.  Most of them run on the weekend, but I'm sure there are some mid-week deals out there.  If you still have a copy of yesterday's Times, there are always ads in the Travel section.  *And many of the tour operators offer cocktails in transit too.  ;)

CAPTAIN FROM CASTILLE?  Didn't they sing "Muskrat Love?"

He's nominated in the Best Performance by a Leading Actor category

Michael Cerveris- LoveMusik
Raúl Esparza- Company
Jonathan Groff- Spring Awakening
Gavin Lee- Mary Poppins
David Hyde Pierce- Curtains

That's what I thought. I guess that's why I assumed when you wrote that Lee had won a Drama Desk, I assumed he had beaten Raul or David for it.

Next, I put in another episode of PLANET EARTH. This was episode #8 entitled "Jungles," and it contained fascinating glimpses of the rain forests in South America, New Guina, and most especially the Congo. Gorgeous images using time lapse photography of the various growing things on the forest floor, and then we go into the trees to see all manner of life there. One of the most fascinating things to watch was a very disturbing chimpanzee attack on another tribe of chimps. After they won, the chimps ATE the dead of the other tribe. I had never seen that before.

There seems to be some disagreement here about the pre-restoration state of "Becket".

Most of us have only what's on the DVD case to go by, and that information says the film was thought to be lost.

And then there were these articles:

Here is a   Minneapolis Star-Tribune (http://www.startribune.com/459/story/1176394.html) article on the restoration efforts on "Becket".

And here is a Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/search/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1762708) story on the restoration.

I appreciate that there can be differences between what is reported and what is truth, but these all seem to agree.

I had planned on watching THE BLACK ROSE tonight, but in the mail today came CAN-CAN and PIGSKIN PARADE, and I couldn't wait to see what CAN-CAN was going to look like.

This was never been a favorite musical (though I like the songs from the original score and the interpolations into the score used in the film), but I've never seen a decent looking version of the movie on TV. It's either been pan and scanned (it was a Todd-AO film) or it's looked faded and/or grainy.

The DVD starts with a four minute Overture which I had never heard (I think the soundtrack album begins with the main title music only). The main titles were simply fabulous looking with bright colors and no grain at all.

And then the film starts, and certain shots look like 3-D! It's that sharp and clean, beyond anything I've ever seen this film looking like. The color seemed to fluctuate a bit in medium shots during the first number, but that's as far as I got before shutting everything down. I'll continue with it when I go back down later.

Since I've already cleaned the dining room this morning, I should be able to finish it before '24' begins tonight at 8.

I don't think her singing is quite up to par in the film though she got better once she started doing more stage/club work. I suspect working on the SWEET CHARITY film made her get some vocal coaching since that was such a big singing role, and after that, she probably kept it up once she started doing a stage act.

Well... I just finished sorting and shredding about two months of mail, junk mail, receipts, catalogs, etc., etc., etc.  (Ah, a King & I reference.)  I didn't think I was going to get through everything, but, lo and behold I did!  The saving grace came when I reached the bottom of the bag and found a bunch of magazines, newsletters and catalogs - all of those were weighting down the bag, and, consequently,  were making think there was a lot of stuff in there to go through.  Well, there was a lot of stuff, but not that not a lot of.  ;)

Now... To Splash or not to Splash?   -Although, since I'm playing tomorrow morning, hmm....

I am rather fond of Italian salami and sausage.  We get our Italian foodstuffs from Monte Carlo in Burbank on Magnolia Blvd.  Attached is Pinocchio's italian Deli with wonderful sandwiches, and across the street Tony's Bella Vista restaurant with the best Italian dinners ever :)

I am also addicted to roast chicken. I could live on it.

As for a vegetarian food is concerned...

Are we talking vegan? lacto-ovo? lacto? etc., etc., etc...

I don't eat vegetables- I eat things that eat vegetables!

OR

I didn't fight my way to the top
of the food chain to be a vegetarian.

I think there's a leg and part of a thigh.  And a few potatoes.  So... Hmm...

But you told us girls last night that there were no leftovers.  That's OK, though, 'cause we ate all the Graeter's ice cream out on the PA turnpike  ;)

I just watched a very funny comedy (farce) this afternoon entitled FRIENDS AND FAMILY.  I knew the basic premise of the movie going into it; but despite the absurdity of the whole story, the movie was quite fun.  The story revolves around a pair of gay lovers who work as enforcers for a mob Don.  All is well until one of the men's parents show up in New York unannounced.  The twist is not that the parents don't know the two are lovers (they do), but that they don't know that they work for the mob.

The only thing I found distracting about the film was how little chemistry these two lead actors had between them.  It was pretty obvious that, at least, one of them was heterosexual, because there was no physical contact betwtween the two men.  The one scene where they held hands could have just as easily been filmed using hand doubles.

Now I have no problem with hiring straight actors (Lord knows they need the work); but if you are going to play the role, at least convince me that you care for the person that you are playing opposite.

Still any film that features Anna Maria Alberghetti is a good film in my book.

Is that where my brother got his "I'm happy and peppy and bursting with love" that he breaks into from time to time?

Now I did not mean to imply that the two male leads in FRIENDS AND FAMILY weren't nice to look at, because they were both attractive.  Greg Lauren and Christopher Gartin were the two male leads; and in addition to Ms. Alberghetti, the film featured Tony Lo Bianco, Meschach Taylor, Tovah Feldshuh, and Beth Fowler.

Re FRIENDS AND FAMILY - Skip wrote the music and lyrics for the song "you can't Surprise Me," which is featured in the banquet scene.

My high school buddy, Joe Triebwasser, wrote the screenplay.  He actually was anmed one of Variety's "Ten Screenwriters to Watch" that year based on that screenplay.  It did quite nicely on the film festival circuit.

They did get some comments at talkbacks about the lack of at least a kiss between the two leads.

I just watched DANCING WITH THE STARS.  My head has been hurting for the past hour.  And my eyes have been too.  I"m not sure if it's sinus congestion or allergies.  But i had to close my eyes for a minute and actually missed joey's first dance. :(

But i did see the recap. And thankfully i caught apolo's free routine. Loved it.  So i came on here to vote.

I don't think i'll watch HEROES tonight. At least not now.  I don't want to feel crappy when i see what i expect will be a great show.

I loved that song!  I could deal with no kissing or hugging, but there was no connection between these two actors, period.  They might as well have speaking their lines to a lamp post.   Still, a lot of fun, and I truly did love Skip's song even though he doesn't even get credit for the song at the official website.

Oh...  And some of my fond "memories" from L.A...

How funny, I don't associate any of those places with L.A.

I finished CAN-CAN. There were still some color fluctuation issues that happened throughout the movie. I'm wondering if my player was at fault or maybe the bulb in my TV is getting weak. I need to try the disc tomorrow in another player to see if those same problems happen.

The image is virtually spotless, though, by far the best it's ever looked. And there's overture, entre'act, and exit music, too.

I put in disc 2 in the CAN-CAN set and started watching the making of the movie featurette. There are some fabulous brief clips of Gwen Verdon in her first Tony-winning role in CAN-CAN on the stage. I didn't know these were in existence.

I didn't get all the way through the documentary, but it's amazing that Marilyn Monroe was ever considered for the film. Of course, I'm sure she wouldn't have done all that dancing had she done the part. Maybe the Apache number but I can't see her being able to do the can-can.

Perhaps she wouldn't have wanted Lilo and Gwen's roles combined like MacLaine did. She might have just done the singing part.

When I went to the Kidney Bowl on Saturday, (and a very plush and luruious bowling alley) they had flyers up announcing that they were auditioning for a future run of The Bachelor. My friend/client, who is very pregant, thought it would be funny if she applied. I egged her on, but then she chickened out. I would have loved to have seen their response if she had gone through with it!

TCB - Interesting.  the DVD box and the DVD credit Kurt H simply as "composer."  That is fine, since it means he scored the film; obviously, Kurt did a lot more work in terms of actual hours spent than Skip did and was entitled to THAT credit.  It's unfortunate people don't know Skip wrote the song, unless they read the closing credits, but that's apparently the usual way of doing things, and the procedure on the DVD was fine.

BUT BUT BUT:  the website and the imdb have since then been adjusted to change Kurt H's credit to "original music."  That's technically not true, since the original music and lyrics for the song "You Can't Surprise Me" are by Skip Kennon.

Thanks for the alert!

There was a logical reason for the guys in the film not kissing, but I heard it a long time ago.  When the movie screened at the Brooklyn Academy of Music cinemas, I seem to remember it having been explained very well, anyway, at least to the satisfaction of the audience there.  I'll try to ask when I see Joe.
