Well, you've read the notes, the notes had some spoils, and now it is time for you to post until the spoiled cows come home - they're currently with Victor having far too good a time.

We went to see HOT FUZZ last night. It was one of the first times I remember my DH saying he'd like to see a movie again. I absolutely loved it and the directing, camera work, editing editing and sound designs were masterful.

A Charles Nelson Reilly story

In the mid-80s that he tried to come out in a big way - in the Los Angeles Gay Pride Parade. He was on float that had the caption: "Gay Actors for Human Rights". He said, "Everyone thought I was making a joke. And I realized, I can't even come out on a float in a Gay Pride Parade! How bizarre is that!"

Good morning, all!  Today is my first day of jury duty since 2001.  I am not thrilled in the least but I will be up`beat today while I pray to God to get me out quickly.  This is about my 6th round with jury duty, not to mention at least 2 Grand Jury summons, and I've only sat on one case, late in Novemeber of whatever year it was, a minor case of robbery and drug dealing. The defendent was clearly guilty of robbing at gunpoint a young but illiterate Spanish couple who should have spent less time keeping each other company and keeping an eye on their shady passenger.

The trial lasted for three days and the jury - because of a couple of nitwits (I think it was 9 to 3 found him guilty) insisted the evidence was weak - was sequestered and put up in a hotel overnight.  We ended up a hung jury and all I could think of during the process was, I have Christmas arrangements to finish for a band rehearsal next Monday!  When we were dismissed, we were told the information we couldn't hear at trial and asked why we couldn't reach a verdict.  One of the 3 holdouts, a late-20s teacher, made a comment that there was no DNA evidence from the stolen hat.  The prosecutor looked at him in amazement and said, "this is a simple robbery not a major case of murder! You're watching too much television."  I vowed then and there that my self-employment was more important than dealing with 11 other people on anything.  I also believe self-employed folk should be exempted from jury duty.  Who's to say I won't be offered a last-minute job while I'm sitting downtown? Or, how you you give up a week or more of your time when you could be earning a living?  If Jury Duty paid me $45/hour I might consider a career in it.

Okay, I''ve got to hit the market and then go, so let's jump to the TOD:
  1.  Richard Lester's films, especially THE RITZ, HELP! and FINDER'S KEEPERS
  2.  All of Ken Russell's films
  3.  Bob Hope's THE CAT AND THE CANARY
  4.  THE STUDENT PRINCE IN HEIDELBERG (silent film)
  5.  THE UNINVITED (Stella by Starlight!)

I know there are more!

And the word of the day is: PERIPHRASIS!
Perri was a Walt Disney True Life Adventure, released in 1957, the story of the life of a squirrel.  It was a good thing they had Winston Hibler on hand to narrate the film, because the original PERIPHRASIS were nothing but a whole lot of chittering.

If it's to the Victor go the spoils, exactly which Victor are they talking about?  Victor Mature?  Victor Hugo?  Victor Borge?

Buono?  Garber?  Young?

I knew a Victor Pascarelli when I was in high school, but everyone always called him Vic, so it couldn't be him.

Here's a question for all you garden experts out there--what the heck do they mean when they say to pinch back petunias after they've done flowering?  I've heard this for years and I still have no idea where to pinch the plant.  I've researched this on the web and get all kinds of different answers.  So I ask, where do you pinch your petunia?

I hope this is not too personal a question to ask this early in the morning.

Since this is Monday on Tuesday, allow me to also make it Wednesday on Tuesday and Ask BK a question.

BK, my friend John Kelly sent you an e-mail asking about an interview that you did for STARLOG Magazine back in 1981.  The topic of the interview was the film THE CREATURE WASN'T NICE.  You wrote back telling him that you did not have a copy of that interview either.  Mr. Kelly has since found the issue in question; Number 52, November, 1981.  Would you like to have a photo copy of the inteview, or now that you know the issue, will you pursue a copy of the magazine on your own?

Or did you wish to contact Mr. Kelly himself, and see about obtaining the issue from him?

Here are my comments on last night's episode of THE LOT:

Where to start?

Like DRs Jose and Jrand i was really annoyed that they didn't continue where they left off last week.  The show was so bizarre to me. I mean the movies were okay. But the format was so different from the interesting reality format the last 2 shows.

1.I liked the reality style of the other episodes better than just showing the full films. There was no interactions between the contestants (will it always be this way?)

2.Did i miss something? They went from 36 to 18 people without ever showing us who got cut? They did not show them do their movies from last week. Total lapse!  And quite maddening. They didn't show the eliminations or the movies!

3.How did we get these 18?

4. If they don't show us the groupings of 3 from last week (to remind us)are we just supposed to remember who everyone is?

5. After they show each movie why aren't they putting up the phone number to call (the woman host is just saying it). Totally bizarre. And in fact i don't believe they EVER put up the numbers. Crazy. Stupid. And why don't they remind people how many times you can vote or for how long.

6. I don't really like this host.

I get that when you get to a different part of the competition the format can change a bit.  But i loved the interaction from last week.  This week is so serious and not the same tone.  And i really want to know what happened to their movies last week and how everyone got eliminated.

Here's a question for all you garden experts out there--what the heck do they mean when they say to pinch back petunias after they've done flowering?

DR DtM, I bought some wonderufl petunias while I was in Alabama, and looked up info when I got home to see how to keep them beautiful. I found this useful information to keep them blooming:

If you look at both petunias you'll notice that the flowers form on the ends of the shoots.  This means that if you encourage more shoots, you have more flowers, and the way to produce more shoots is to pinch the ends off the stems that you have.  That's step one to keeping your petunias blooming.

Step two is to regularly fertilize using a fertilizer that is a 20-20-20 or equivalent.  (10-10-10) etc.  So called "blossom booster" fertilizers are NOT as good - these annuals bloom better with higher nitrogen levels.

Step three is to dead head your trailing petunia regularly by cutting off the spent flowers BELOW the flower, being sure to cut off the swollen place just below the flower.  This is the area seeds are developing in, and it's the seeds you want to be sure to remove.  The wave (petunia) does not need to be deadheaded.

Step four  is to cut back a few of your stems every two or three weeks.... cut four or five stems back by half every other week to keep plant bushy and flowers all over the plant instead of just on the ends.

Step five is to water deeply when dry.  If these are in baskets this might be twice a day in hot weather.... don't keep them wet, but don't let them wilt either.  You'll develop the "eye" to tell if it's thirsty, and you can lift the pot to see if it's getting light (dry) and will soon need water.   NEVER FERTILIZE A THIRSTY PLANT.  Water first and then fertilize a couple of hours later, or use time release fertilizer.

Hope this helps!

DR Jennifer - Breathe.  ;)

Did you catch the second, shorter episode of "On the Lot" last week?  They did show the eliminations after the three-person film challenge.

However, we did not see the one-page script movies, nor the whittling down to last night's final 18.

I'm guessing - and this is purely a guess - that Fox may have changed the number of episodes ordered for "On the Lot", and we just "simply" lost a televised round in the process.

Quote
5. After they show each movie why aren't they putting up the phone number to call (the woman host is just saying it). Totally bizarre. And in fact i don't believe they EVER put up the numbers. Crazy. Stupid. And why don't they remind people how many times you can vote or for how long.

Hmm... I just double-checked the DVR, and they did put up the phone numbers after each movie was shown while the host was wrapping things up.  And at the end of the show during the recap, they showed the numbers again.  -Instead of having all 18 of them repeated by the host one after the other (Whew!).

Quote
6. I don't really like this host.

I get that when you get to a different part of the competition the format can change a bit.  But i loved the interaction from last week.  This week is so serious and not the same tone.  And i really want to know what happened to their movies last week and how everyone got eliminated.

As for the host... I guess there's bound to be some info somewhere on web as to what happened.

What I find interesting is that it appears that the filmmakers may already be working on the next challenge even before they know that they're going to be eliminated.  When I checked out the site for "On the Lot" yesterday, there were discussions about the next challenge.  I think.  -The website seems more devoted to the web-based competition rather than the TV one.

I think it's one of those new-fangled gimmicks.  It's clear in the original bottle, but once you pour it - and it "hits" the air - it turns a dark red, garnet color.

Wow, thanks for that info Edisaurus...it just so happens I made up a hanging basket of lemon petunias and both purple and lavendar putunias this weekend.

I'm still waiting for O'Toole's GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS.  I'd also like to see more plays from the early days of TV.  There was a production of THE TEMPEST with Maurice Evans as Propsero, Lee Remick as Miranda, and Richard Burton as Caliban that's never been released.  I loved to see the old BBC AGE OF KINGS (a compliation of the Shakespeare's War of The Roses plays) put out...where Sean Connery played Hotspur.  I know the thing exists because it ran on Bravo once back when Bravo was still an actual Arts programming station.

I spent the weekend in bliss catching up on DVDs that had been piling up unwatched.

One very great surprise was "Apocalypto" which is a fascinating, fast-paced and beautiful film.  Yes, it has quite a bit of violent behavior and a little gore.  It's upsetting.  But the payoff is superb.

Another surprise was "Daddy Long Legs."  Yes, I'd read BK's rave about the transfer.  I've seen this film several times in various "video" incarnations.  None of them ever gave me a sense that this film had any cohesion, which I found surprising.  I now realize that I'd never seen the whole film.  And WHAT A FILM TREAT it is!  This is a gorgeous DVD.  The colors are often phenomenal (the final ballet sequence is one of the most glorious things ever committed to film).  I found it touching and tuneful and a ton of fun.  I had no problem with the May-December nature of Caron and Astaire, having long ago bought into the similar situation of Hepburn-Astaire in "Funny Face" (although I still have difficulty with the Hepburn-Cooper relationship in "Love in the Afternoon"...Coop is just TOO long in the tooth).

I figuratively "devoured" the Miss Marple boxed set of four Margaret Rutherford films.  What a treat!  Indescibable joy in a four-pack.

I had a nice reunion with "That Touch of Mink", but the DVD from Artisan was a big disappointment.  Throughout the film there were focus problems, and not a few scenes were color-unsaturated with foreground too light and the background a deep blue.  I can liken the focus issues with the color issues in "Can-Can"....just as the color in the latter fluctuates in brief snippets throughout that film, the focus in the former goes askew in brief snippets throught the Day-Grant film.

"Can-Can" was also on the agenda.  This is another film that was always severely hampered with TV viewings.  This film should be seen in one way only, and that is the full widescreen spectrum of its Todd-AO presentation.  The sound was really good and the film was much-improved for me despite the color fluxes.  It's still not ideally cast.  Sinatra is mis-cast.  Jourdan should have been in his role. Jacques Bergerac should have had Jourdan's role.  And....oh, I don't know...anybody ELSE should have played the Shirley MacLaine role.

Still....a FUN film.

Last night, I settled in with "Brigadoon" which I have not watched in a few years....and needless to say, I've not seen it on my HDTV.

This film remains a major pleasure.  The sound is awesome and the studio sets IMPROVE a great deal when watching it on a larger screen in the proper ratio.

I also put "Bells Are Ringing" on my DVD just to watch "Just in Time" and found myself watching other scenes, as well.  It's a glorious transfer and, again, it's like seeing a new film when it's seen on a larger screen in the proper ratio.

Let's see, I know I'm forgetting some things.

Oh, yes....Friday, I watched "Paint Your Wagon"....lovely film, beautiful DVD transfer.  Stunning Jean Seberg.  Love that Andre Previn adaptation.

Later that same day, I revisited (it had been a couple of years since my last viewing) "Victor, Victoria" which is totally splendiferous on DVD and on the larger HDTV screen.  What a joy this film remains!!!  I find myself becoming immersed in the details I'd never noticed before on the smaller 17-inch screen I'd been using the past 14 years!

That's all I can remember of my Memorial Day Movie Marathon.  But I'm certain I'm still leaving something out.

Did you catch the second, shorter episode of "On the Lot" last week?  They did show the eliminations after the three-person film challenge.

However, we did not see the one-page script movies, nor the whittling down to last night's final 18.

Yes i saw the first elimination (with the groups of 3). But i did not see (nor did they show the 1 page movie scripts or eliminations.  It was extremely bizarre to me. I actually thought that when each person was featured that they would at least show something related to last week.

Quote
I just double-checked the DVR, and they did put up the phone numbers after each movie was shown while the host was wrapping things up.  And at the end of the show during the recap, they showed the numbers again.  -Instead of having all 18 of them repeated by the host one after the other (Whew!).As for the host... I guess there's bound to be some info somewhere on web as to what happened.

Okay this is so weird.  On my station when the host was talking after each movie she simply said the number (188-the lot or whatever). There was nothing written on the screen.  And at the end they simply showed the people's names and faces and movies and again no number.

I wonder if maybe people in canada are not allowed to vote by phone and maybe that is why we didn't get to see the numbers. Although we can't vote for American Idol and we see the numbers there.

No we saw the first elimination. But not the last one.   For instance that group with jessica, kenny (is that his name the one who was working on the computer). The third girl in the group (was it hannah?) got eliminated. It was the group with the NYU girl. Anyhow NYU girl was on last night (she made it). But kenny (sorry if i got his name wrong) was gone. They never showed their 1 page scripts that they were doing on thursday. and we did not see who got eliminated.

Actually i'm adding this comment. I just read the televisionwithoutpity recap and someone named kenny is listed. I didn't notice him. But i guess he did go through.  But we still definitely did not see the last whittling down to 18. And i definitely did see thursday's show.

Anyhow this guy commented on the changes. But he liked it.

It's funny i did not think i would like The View with Rosie. Whenever she had guested on there in the past i did not really enjoy her.

But i must say i absolutely loved her on the show.  She made the show 100 times better than it had been.  And i'm not sure how they will recover.

What happened last week was very sad.  Especially if you happened to see the pre-taped birthday show they showed yesterday (for elisabeth's 30th birthday). Rosie gave her a fabulous gift and they hugged and were so chummy.

Good Afternoon!

Hmm...  I just read this over on PlaybillArts.com, and I have to say that I was no where near Cleveland or Detroit this past weekend.

Performances at Cleveland Orchestra and Detroit Symphony Are Literal Showstoppers (http://www.playbillarts.com/news/article/6563.html)

Although, I was at the Thomas Allen recital in DC, when after a set of Britten folksong arrangements some members of the audience started to boo, and Mr. Allen and his accompanist proceeded to leave the stage.  Thankfully, after the brou-haha had died down, and the few boo-ers left the auditorium, Mr. Allen came back out and continued his recital.

Oh...  And one of my earliest PBS memories, was Andre Watts' "Live from Lincoln Center" broadcast when a string broke during the first of Gershwin's Preludes for Piano.  He left the stage, and it wasn't until the piano technician came on stage did the commentator know what was going on.

Oh... And I was also in the audience for Lily Tomlin's "Search for Signs..." when she inexplicably left the stage for a few minutes in the middle of a segment.  She exited stage right, then re-entered from stage left.  A friend of mine who had worked a couple of times at the Kennedy Center commented, "Ah, the backstage bathroom is stage left."  ;)  -However, we never really did find out the real reason.

Oh... And then there was that performance of Tosca at the Washington Opera where Placido Domingo was rushed to the hospital shortly after his first entrance.  Apparently, some kind of ear thingy.  However, since the GW Hospital was just a few blocks away, they did not cancel the show, they just added an extra 45-minutes intermission.

But, again, I was no where near Cleveland or Detroit this past weekend.

...And there was another myocardial infarction during Eleanor: An American Love Story at Ford's Theatre...

...And another one at Clemson University when I was there with Anything Goes...

My errand to my mom's didn't take as long as expected, so I've had time to come home and have my cold baked beans on pumpernickel open-face sandwich.

I also had time to peek in on my work email and found the revolting news that our department manager is leaving at the end of June to take a position at a local university.  It's a good move for him, but I sure hate to see him go.

"Yentl" has been available here for at least a year.

Hmm... I even think that I have Yentl in my DVD collection too.

...........

Although, after just checking Amazon.com, it appears "Yentl" is only available as a Region 2 DVD.  Is it possible it had a limited release here in the U.S., and then was pulled from the shelves?  I guess I'll have to take a look at my DVDs later.

And is "The View" a better viewing experience without the riveting Rosie?

It was OK.  As for the quality, well, I don't watch it religiously.  To me, it's basically the "least offensive" programming between 11:00am and Noon.  ;)

I did think Rosie added a bit of edge to "The View", however, I also thought at times it sort of de-classed Barbara Walters' original concept.  And the new opening they came up with when Rosie joined the show - UGH!  Cheesy and cheap looking!

ADDENDUM:  What I meant to say, was that I was surprised at how much "Rosie" was imposed on "The View".  The confetti canons, all the audience giveaways, the Broadway performers (which I did like), and even her spot as the moderator for the Hot Topics segment.

As Jose mentions, On the Lot did indeed show the "whittling" down to 18 finalists last week (on Thursday, IIRC).  I posted on Friday about it.  What I am finding strange is this weird scheduling.  I'm wondering now if they will settle down to Mondays and Tuesdays.  Also, what happened to the blonde woman host from the first episode.  The babe last night was fine, but I kept thinking she was Eva Longoria (not that I'm complaining, LOL).  I am currently favoring Zach, and I disagree with Garry Marshall--I don't think he should change his last name.  ;)

I have a feeling the time slot for "On the Lot" will float until Fox's full summer line-up is in place.  And they see how everything does in the ratings.

I'm also guessing that there will be some gaps of a week or two between airings as we get closer to the final episodes in order to allow for longer shooting and turn around times of the movies.

DR Jose - years ago DH Richard (maybe he was still my DB then) and I attended a concert by our local symphony orchestra.  During some concerto, the piano soloist got so lost that even having the conductor shout out measure numbers to her didn't help.  She finally just put her hands in her lap and shook her head.

Maybe DR Elmore was at that concert, too?

I was there when...

Phillip Casnoff was hit on the head by scenery at SHOGUN and they had to cancel the rest of Act II

Idina Menzel had that trapdoor mishap at what turned out (unintentionally) to be her last Broadway perf - so far- of WICKED.  Since there were only five minutes left of the show, the standby went on after they made sure Idina Menzel's injuries were not as serious as originally thought.

When the house malfunctioned and they had to cancel the remainder of Act II of MARY POPPINS

Three times being at Broadway mishaps should be the limit, I guess, so they won't happen in my presence again, I hope.

Jennifer, I'm really confused by what you're saying about On the Lot, sorry.  First off, Kenny indeed was there last night--his movie was a really, really bad thing about a taxi driver (it did have some cool color effects in it).  Second, what do you mean by "1 page scripts"?  The last show last week did indeed whittle them down to 18; I'm just not sure what you think you missed.

What I saw on thursday was the groupings of 3 and then an elimination.

But near the end of the show they gave each person left (i think 24 people maybe) the task to film a 1 page script in one hour.  We never saw that and we never saw the final elimination.

The 1 week to do a 1 minute short film (what we saw last night) was not the same as the task they were told to do near the middle/end of thursday's show.

Okay if you still don't understand what i mean read this. These people are saying the same thing:

My mid-morning slumber was greatly disturbed by much agitated barking from outside. I leapt from my bed to see what could be the matter.

The blonds were down in the lower yard raising a grand ruckus - they seem to be intereted in somnething just out the fence. I went down to the other side of their yard to investigate (snakes are common). Buster and Bonnie were barking and digging up a storm, trying to tunnel under the fence. On close inspection I discovered, just on my side of the fence, a fair size box turtle all rolled into a ball.

The dogs were NOT pleased when I removed it from their sight:

I put the poor scared critter down well out of reach and gave it a closer inspection. The shell was vibrating, so life was clearly present. Soon, the shell cracked open a bit and two dark eyes peered out; a few minutes passed, then a head came out. I decided to go get some lettuce and the camera. When I returned the tortise had pulled a "hare" and was long gone.

DR JMK - During the half-hour episode last week, right at the end, the finalists were given five different one-page scripts, and were given one hour to shoot them.  They even showed some "previews" of the drama during the shooting.  However, we never saw the one-page script/one-hour to shoot movies.

It appears that HDTV makes everything old NEW again.

To be honest, it DOES make films you've seen many times look very different and if it's a good transfer, amazingly three dimensional.

And a true hi-def transfer gives that added sense of depth and sharpness that even the best DVDs can't match.

There's a WHOLE WORLD of viewing pleasure awaiting those who haven't taken the HDTV plunge yet.

During the late 1960s, ABC began a series of made-for-TV films of famous film and stage properties. Some were awful: LAURA with Lee Raziwell as an example.

But they did a version of A HATFUL OF RAIN with Sandy Dennis that was one of the best things I've ever seen on TV. I would LOVE to have that on DVD.

I also neglected UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE with Sandy Dennis.

I have a nice afternoon of TV episode watching.

I began with a BONES episode from the first season box that I cued up last night. It was the episode where Booth and Brennan go to LA to investigate the body of a woman found under mysterious circumstances. All of the episodes from season one are really enjoyable, but this one is one of my favorites.

I was very pleased that my copy of Season two of THE CLOSER finally arrived.

I was relieved that the episodes did receive anamorphic transfers this time around (thank you, Warner Bros.), and the ones I watched looked excellent.

I began with the season premiere, the body of a cop and a dead mob guy found in a warehouse. With the team running on all cylinders in this case, it was enjoyable from beginning to end.

I'm going to try not to watch the entire season again in one sitting since they're so entertaining that I don't want the enjoyment to be over so quickly, but I couldn't resist watching one more. This is the first one to feature Frances Sternhagen as Brenda's mother (inspired casting) and involved the suspicious death of a juror during deliberations.

I really love how Lt. Flynn, who was one of her bitterest enemies during all but two of the first season episodes, now has such respect and admiration for Brenda and she returns the respect in kind. (The baseball game episode is coming up, of course!)

Eight and a half hours of nada!  Around 10:30 they pulled half the room (about 75 people) onto a voir dire.  At 12:30 PM, those of us still waiting were told to go to lunch and return at 2 PM.  I took the R Train up to Union Square, stopped at the Kurt Weill Foundation and picked up the beautiful KW Edition of The Firebrand of Florence.  I got back to the Jury Room around 1:30, and at 3:30 we were told to return tomorrow morning at 9:30 AM.  Took an hour to get back here: two subways and a bus.  Now I'm very tired and I got a lotta catching up to do.

Dear Edi ... I REALLY love your new "publicity picture" that you are using now...... very nice !!

As it turned out, there were two different articles about the show. The editor who asked for my picture ended up using an awful picture of me that they have on file. It was taken when we got a group of neighbors together to protest the loft before it was built. We were instructed to look P.O.'ed.

So now, whenever I write a letter to the editor, they use this angry picture. Usually it's appropriate, but not this time!

I think Joanne would have been a little softer in her interpretation (based on her Amada in THE GLASS MENAGERIE), and that wouldn't have worked quite as well. Frances and Kyra have a very similar facial structure that makes them VERY believable as mother and daughter.

Having seen the shows and knowing the guilty parties ahead of time, it gives me a great chance to see just how cleverly the mysteries have been put together with the subtle clues that are dropped amid all the other information that looks so much more on point (but often isn't.)

I just LOVE this show.

I love that lady! I haven't seen her in a while, and I usually see her at Joe Allen's.  I haven't seen her sons Tony or Paul in a while, either.

DR elmore - Well, at least your home (early).

As for the subway, couldn't you walk over to the A/C, and then take the C up to 81st and walk over from there?

Or over to the B/D/F/V/N/Q/R/W up to Herald Square, and then hop on then either stay on the B, or transfer to a C Train?

I was lugging three heavy volumes of the Kurt Weill Edition.  I wasn't walking any more than I had to.

TOD:

The Ritz
Yentl

I agree with both of these...but I have the Region 2 DVD of Yentl from England.  You'd think that if they can release it anywhere in the world, they'd be able/willing to release it in the US. :-\

Also:

Song of the South
The Boy Friend

And of course Ring of Fire with David Janssen...but that's for a co-worker, not me. :)

As for DVD releases stage productions that have been filmed/broadcast on TV:

Ain't Misbehavin', Pump Boys and Dinettes, Romance/Romance and Pacific Overtures!!

Ah, yes, two parts of my morning wake-up routine.

Buster starts by washing my face thoroughly.  Bonnie follows by standing on my chest, giving me a lick or two, then waiting patiently still stainding on my chest for me to pet her.  If I start to pet Marty, who by this time will be waiting by the side of the bed, she will pull my hand back to her - the princess allows no other to be adored!  Meanwhile, Mikey will have pushed Buster away, smashing his own face on my own.  This leads to Mikey and Buster playing at fighting - much snarling and growling - while I finally get my chance to sit up and start moving.

Fletcher, all this time, will be snoozing closely next to der B.  There is an advantage to being deaf, after all.

Still not a word about the missing contestants or the shot in an hour films.  The message boards over at ON THE LOT are curious as well.

One poster said that America would be very turned off by what happened with the judging of the films and the WAY the final 18 were chosen and so this will not be made public.

Ratings are terrible - the judges got a lot of unfair criticism on the message board....I thought they were being VERY kind!  If they had said what they REALLY thought, there would have been tears, I am sure.

Okay here are my comments on tonight's show.

ELIMINATION SPOILERS ON THE LOT SPOILERS

There were 2 things that kind of bugged me. 1. all the people from foreign countries got eliminated 2. all the people who had big airtime got saved (example jessica and kenny whose films were pretty bad, but who were the major storyline of one of the episodes were saved).

I was happy with the top 3 films. I think zach and lucky penny (will) deserved it. And even though the last guy (forget his name, the guy who did the nerd "get a room" movie) got beat up by the judges (for his "nerd" seeming mentally challenged) i was happy his movie got top 3. I'm sure a lot of it was because he was so sweet. but i actually liked the movie (if he had just made the nerd more nerdy).

I read the On the Lot Board discussions, too.  I guess I was confused about last Thursday's episode.  I thought they had whittled it down to 18, but it was 24.  I saw that post, too, JR, that alleged shenanigans were afoot.  Not having seen tonight's episode yet, I can only say that I think the premise is a worthy one, and several of the 1 minute films I found completely wonderful.  The weird rotating judges (almost a Monty Python reference) and hosts, as well as the missing episode, are kind of weird, though.

I'm curious BK why you would want the show cancelled quickly.  Is it because you object to the contest elements?

Good Evening!

Silly, silly, silly, silly, silly and SILLY!

Oh, and CAMP too.

For a child of the 80's, it brought back many wonderful and, in retrospect, embarrassing memories.  I had fun.

If XANADU had had the wisdom to open off-Broadway, wait to be discovered and then either (a) move, or (b) stay put off-Bway in NYC like Little Shop did but tour to large venues - I suspect it would become a hit.  As is, openiong directly on Bway, I'll fearlessly :) predict as follows:  if Brantley reviews it for the Times, it will be negative and the show will be stuck building word of mouth with the summer tourist crowd; if Isherwood reviews it, I think he will like it a great deal and call it an extended but very enjoyable sketch.

Seriously, I was thinking the same thing about how the Times will end up reviewing it.  And since any show opening up in the summer - especially shortly after the Tonys - is already handicapped in a sense - and not for the better - I really am curious to see what kind of audience the show will find.  And vice versa.

MOVIE/MOVIE certainly did have some fun moments, and I liked the conceit of the piece, but making BAXTER'S BEAUTIES OF 1933 in color violated our knowledge that BECKY SHARP was the first three strip Technicolor film, and that was in 1935.

DYNAMITE FISTS was shown in black and white at the movies, but it was obviously filmed in color and simply printed in black and white. Current TV prints of MOVIE/MOVIE have both features in color.

Well, no one's going to accuse this person of being an actual writer, are they.  I mean, the fact that sites would allow such things (unless he owns the site) or that the author would allow such ineptitude to be viewed by one and all is what's astonishing.  It's hard to tell WHAT he thinks of anything - he hasn't seen the film, totally misunderstands what I wrote in the booklet in just about every way you can, and then, well, I don't know what.

My computer just did a security update and such, and then required restarting.  The last time it happened, as I mentioned on this here site, it took two times restarting to get the keychain "change all" button to appear, and it was really annoying.  So, I did a permissions repair, the first I've done in about four months, and that, apparently, fixed it, and I got the change all button as soon as it restarted, which is the way it's supposed to work.

On the Lot may not be dead to me yet, but it's on life support.  I actually love the premise of the show--at least the first two episodes, but this obvious rip-off of American Idol really, really annoyed me this evening.

Jews don't lift bales, hence the expression "christian bale."

BK, I agree TV IS one big Ted Mack amateur hour.  Which is why I don't much watch  it any more.  We're now living in the age of the Amateur as Auteur...and what a frightening thought it is! Gong them all!

Our GUESTS come here to read sparkling things that they cannot read elsewhere, and yet there are only a handful of non-WUSSBURGERS in attendance.

An interesting phenonmenon, Internet-wise - because the usual idiots have the usual boards to do nothing but bellyache on regarding their favorite DVDs that need to be done correctly, most recently the years of bellyaching about the lack of the roadshow Sand Pebbles.  But, when they finally get what they have been yearning for not ONE of these people can be bothered to post about it.  It's like they live to bellyache and then it's on to the next.  I posted at several places about the roadshow version, as I did here, and there has not been ONE response from any of the bellyachers.  Typical.

I've never listened to Trino Lopez, but have listened to Trini Lopez.  I hear Trino Lopez is not only a good singer, but a fine yachtsman.

My Cd compiling today was versions of "Sway", "Perfidia" and "Frenezi".

This followed my Jobim tune compilations of the last few days.
