Well, you've read the notes, you know what's been announced, you know the topic of the day, you know what words we want to hear, so let's have loads of lovely posts, shall we?

Chicken marsala--yum. I don't cook so I don't know recipes.

Well, if you can't provide a recipe you'll just have to do a TRIPLE LUTZ.

Do we all get to dance the "Funky chicken" in honour of the DVD site? I am sure it will be of interest and value to the film buffs of HHW. Congratulations BK 1500+ posts and a new baby.

Oh! I must say I adore terms of endearment. I'm quite partial to "sweet pea." It is also one of my favorite fragrances at Bath and Body Works. I also like "honey" and "hun," but not "hon." "Cutie pie," "sweetie," and "darling" are nice, too. One time some guy called my friend "darling," and I laughed at his demonstration of affection. I now call her "darling," and it tends to bug/scare her!

I think the DVD thing will be lots of fun, but I want to reiterate it will in no way impact what goes on here EVER.

Also, I don't know why it's linking like it is, but it's taking you to the main page of accessworld.com - when you get there just click on the DVD icon on the left menu bar - that will take you right to our "Place".

I don't usually use terms of endearment (TOE in Internet lingo), but I've always like "Sweety-honey-baby-pussy-cat" from Little Shop of Horrors.

Oh, and chicken -

I like to cut up two count them two chicken breasts into chunky chunks.  I then like to cut up a decent number of mushrooms and then I like to dice an onion.  Then I like to melt some butter in a skillet and dump the whole thing in there, season it with salt, pepper, and a bit of Lawry's season salt, and sautee the whole damn thing up and serve it over a bed of rice.  If you haven't got a bed of rice, a futon of rice will do.  It's quite yummiliscious.  I call it Chicken Thing.

Hmm... chicken recipes...  Here's my favorite a la minute one:

Fry two or three pieces of good bacon in a saute pan over medium high heat.  Once bacon is cooked - nice and crisp - remove bacon from pan and crumble.  Pour off all but about two tablespoons of the bacon fat.

Saute one thinly sliced sweet onion in the bacon fat until translucent.  Move the onions to the side, then place two chicken breasts in the pan.  Cook on one side for five minutes - do not move the chicken or it will not sear properly - then cook on the other side.  Remove chicken breast to a warm plate.  Deglaze the pan - yeah, don't use a non-stick - with a few tablespoons of balsamic vinegar.  Once you have gotten all those good browned bits off the bottom of the pan, add the chicken breasts back in and cook over medium heat until done.  Transfer to a serving plate and top with the crumbled bacon.  Serve with vegetable and starch of choice.

-I think I may have left a detail or two out, but you get the point.  Oh, you can also "mount" the sauce with a pat of butter - or two.  Oh, and, of course, salt and fresh-cracked black pepper to taste.

I, too, must to bed, but before I go let me do just one final TRIPLE LUTZ.  The other late-night denizens can post away - can you imagine when the early to bedders get up and see that we actually beat the number of posts from the day before, plus all the head-start posts from tonight?  I do believe all those people will be doing TRIPLE LUTZES.

As for the Topic of the Day (TOTD in Internet lingo), I've never cooked chicken.  However, I have had homemade food with chicken cooked by other people.  Anyway, here are some links to some low fat chicken recipes that sound really good :) (I hope the links work.  I can copy and paste the recipes if necessary):

Chicken and Apricot Curry (http://houseandhome.msn.com/food/recipes/RecipeDetail.aspx?rid=2638)

Chicken and Salsa Soup (http://houseandhome.msn.com/food/recipes/RecipeDetail.aspx?rid=2641)

And here's a low-fat Chicken Marsala (http://houseandhome.msn.com/food/recipes/RecipeDetail.aspx?rid=2005) recipe.  I've never had Chicken Marsala at all, so I have no idea what it's like.  Sounds real easy, though.

Sleep. is. good. I am so tired. I will probably be errant and truant tomorrow *tear,* so don't have too much fun without me! My friends are coming over to sup with me...I just said sup. Anyway, there will be about 12 or 13 of them (including Drew!), and then there's me. My poor parents and bro. :) Take care, everybody!

Good golly, it takes quite some time to catch up on 600 posts!

Terms of endearment... I use "sweetheart" fairly often, but not much beyond that.

Chicken recipe... I'll try to come up with one later when I'm not tired.

I gotta say, I'm quite pleased with this new (to me) computer of mine.  Pages load faster, better sound quality, it isn't prone to all-too-frequent freeze-ups, and I finally have MSN Messenger back in my life.  It has a DVD drive, too, so I'll have to check that out shortly.

Whew!  Again!

I have bookmarked the NEW DVD place and will do more reading later today....but I had to get through all the posts!

And I will also have to think a bit about a chicken dish.

DREAM LOVERS by Dodd Darin is a nice remembrance of his parents Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee.  It is NOT a hatchet job but it doesn't spare either of them by covering over flaws.  It is a very personal look at the two of them and their lives together and apart.  If you are a fan of Bobby and/or Sandra, it is worth looking for.

DRJed - I got a new computer last August to replace my 1998 vintage system....and it is great.  Just a WalMart ComPaq special (and I had to return the first one to get one that works) but yes a new computer makes a world of difference.  I can even make my own CD's!  Of course the 1998 model replaced a Radio Shack Tandy 1500 that used 5 1/4" floppy disks!  Technology....and now MR BK is talking about Memory Sticks!  We ARE the Jetsons.

TOMOVOZ - you won't be sorry you searched for the book.

Hmmmmmmmmmm......I like chicken breasts served on pasta alfredo.....with sliced tomatoes.  :)

As MR BK noted, if you can post at Broadwayworld.com you can use your same screen name and password at the new DVD site!

From BK last night.

"Won't those who went to sleep thinking haineshisway.com had seen the best of what it was going to see be surprised".

Oh, I knew it was going to happen. I could feel it in my bones so it was no surprise this morning when I logged in and found 7 more pages to read before coming to Thursday. All I have to say is Welcome new DR Evil Twin. I think it's Swishy who says "Welcome to the Cookie Jar".

I recorded my reviews for Radio Wales. The first one will be broadcast next Wednesday, January 14th. It's a capsule (i.e. 90 second) review of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which we saw on Christmas Eve in London. The show is a lot of fun. It's a big spectacle. They are very true to the movie although they did cut a couple of songs, including Truly's love song, which I missed. There are live dogs, a sweets factory,  a flying outhouse and a flying car and some excellent performances. It was a great Christmas Eve treat.

I have some pictures to post. I will do it sparingly so as not to hamper the viewing ability of those with dial-up connections. I also needs must post because people (as noted a day or two ago) are breathing down my neck, post-wise. I need to boost my numbers. I'll never catch up to the initial gods, but I'll have a good time trying.

JRand, I remember the early Radio Shack computers. I even worked on on that used 8" floppys. And they had their own version of MS-DOS called TRS-DOS (pronounced terse dos for those of you who are even remotely interested). My first major computer (after the Timex 1000 with a membrane keyboard and a whopping 1K of memory) was an Atari 800XL in 1984. I stuck with Atari for a while thinking they would be one of the players in the PC battle but in the late 80s realized that they were falling into a niche category and while they did amazing things with games, Atari would not be a survivor in the computer world.

Chicken. I like most kind of chicken. I'm partial to chicken breast, usually marinated in a honey/mustard kind of sauce and sauteed or broiled, and served with fresh green beans. I also love Chicken Marsala, though I have never made it. If it's on the menu at a restaurant, I will usually order it.

Now, on to futzing with pictures so I can entertain you people.

OK. Here's a picture of my arrival at Paddington Station. We had been on the plane since 8pm the previous evening so I make no apologies for my tired expression. It was about 8am London time. We took the Heathrow Express from the airport to Central London (a bit expensive but worth it IMHO). Since we came to Paddington Station and because Anthony likes to play with the photo editing program, you can see he scanned in the tag from our Paddington Bear and added it to my coat.

Oh, I forgot. Congrats on the DVD site. Looks good. I'll have to explore it more when I find the time to leave this site.

And, since, like Laura II, I didn't provide a Chicken Marsala recipe, I will attempt not a triple lutz, but a quadruple lutz. My office mates will be amazed.

In fact, they are amazed as now resume my seat after attempting and successfully executing a quadruple lutz!!! The roar of approval is still ringing in my ears as I settle into work.

Back to the Ford Foundation.

Ben, LOVE the photo, especially the "please look after this bear" tag.  We must be leading parallel lives; I also took the redeye to Heathrow (didn't sleep a wink), then took the express from Heathrow to London (though my stop was Bayswater station).  I can hardly wait to hear more and live vicariously!

Darling BK: If you adore and miss endearments, you need only begin frequenting Denny's and IHOPs across this fine nation of ours.  The waitresses there will be happy to call you "Sweet Stuff" or "Lambie Pie" or "Hon" or whatever your little heart desires.

Love the idea of the DVD site, but I confess I had trouble loading the page when I tried to link from the notes.  I waited and waited and waited and it still hadn't loaded after a long time (and we have DSL and fast computers) so I finally gave up and continued on to the second page of notes and here.  I'll try again later, though.

My DVD purchases lately have been strange, indeed.  It seems I'm on a nostalgia kick, as lately I find myself purchasing things from the '80s like Three Men and a Baby and the "Ultimate Edition" of Dirty Dancing.  Not that those movies aren't fun, but I mean to say!  I still have yet to purchase Grand Illusion or Citizen Kane or even All About Eve on DVD, and yet I'm buying Leonard Nimoy movies?   Heaven forfend.

Oh yeah, chicken recipes.

Well, The Hubby makes delicious chicken, but I think the secret is not so much in ingredients (he marinates it in secret stuff beforehand, and cooks it with green peppers and red onion slices), but in the fact that he does it in a red Le Creuset grilling pan.  I guess it's a grilling pan...it has those ridges on it that leave stripes on the chicken?  But it's not cast iron, it's red and white enamelware.  It's the only thing we ever make in that pan, and it is quite delicious.  Can't get the same results cooking it in another pan, and there is always an AWFUL mess to clean up when it's finished.  But it's worth it.

A chicken recipe I make is Savory Chicken Saute.  Heat 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.  Saute 4 chicken breasts in the oil for 4 minutes, then turn them over and add 1 large red onion, sliced.  Cover and cook for 3 minutes longer, stirring occasionally.  Add 2 cloves garlic, minced, 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary sprigs, chopped, and 1/2 cup chicken broth.  Cover and cook until onion is tender-crisp (about 4 minutes), stirring occasionally.  Season with salt and pepper to taste.

This is a South Beach Diet recipe, and it is SOOOOOO good.  The chicken comes out incredibly juicy and flavorful.  It's also easy, inexpensive, and good for you.  Who could ask for anything more?

Oh my DRLULU - I don't think I have ever tried a chicken recipe with a red onion...but now that I think about it....perfect!

Welcome DR Evil Twin.

DRBen the pictures are great!  When we arrived in London, there was a transit strike going on.  Well actually at Heathrow - and who KNEW the airport was so far from the city???  We took a red bus in...no subways...and very few taxi cabs!  And when we were leaving the theatre none of us had bothered to get the address of the place where we had checked in....so when we finally found a taxi....we sort of knew where to go....  Thank goodness the subways were running the next day!

Oh, my dears. I have been totally remiss in terms of endearment. And I just came back from a country where these endearments are still a part of daily speech. I must fix this in future posts.

DR Ben will you ask at the Ford Foundation if they have a window crank for the passenger rear of a 1959 Edsel Ranger?  It broke off in my hand the first time I tried to use it and my dad is still mad at me.  Maybe I can replace it at this late date.   8)

Hey, I'm stuck at home again today due to severe ice, so I thought maybe I could start my own HHW Trivia Contest.  Here's the question:

This musical had a legendary star and a fascinating supporting cast.  The legendary star would go on to star in a classic musical in a history making production.  One of the supporting cast would leave this show to create a role which would win them a Tony.  Another of the supporting cast would go on to win a Tony for a show with several unusual elements.  And a third member of the supporting cast would be a Tony winner for a hit musical that has something very specific in common with the classic musical the legendary star did.  All three of the supporting cast became beloved television stars for various reasons.

Name the musical.
Name the legendary star and the classic musical they would star in and why it was a history-making production.
Name the first supporting cast member and the show they went into and won a Tony for.
Name the second supporting cast member and the show they won the Tony for and at least one of the unusual elements of that show.
Name the third supporting cast member, the show they became a Tony winner for, and what specific thing that show has in common with the classic show the legendary star did.
Name the television credits the supporting cast members are best-known for.

Email me at:  jmkauffman@aol.com and I will in fact dredge up a sparkling prize for anyone who gets all the right answers.

Yes, I'm bored and yes, I'm trying to find something fun to do, OK?

Good morning!

Well, I think I'm going to skip the haircut this morning.  I really like the barber up here, but it would take about an hour and some change to get it done, so... and since "this cut" is only about a week and a half, I'll just wait until early next week.. Gotta look good for NYC!

-I also slept in a little bit too, so... ;)

Well, I'm gonna start packing up the rest of my stuff, and, hopefully, I should be on my way back to Richmond in a few hours.  I'll check back in when I take a break.

DR Ben, I still have my Atari 800XL hooked up in my storage room, and when I'm looking for something to do (not oftten), I will go in there and play DONKEY KONG, DIG DUG, MS PAC MAN, or POLE POSITION using those cartridges you'd jam down into the thing. Using that computer with a 300 baud modem was my introduction to the world of telecommunications, too, so I got lots of use out of that Atari system before I saw the writing on the wall and traded up to the PC-DOS world.

Welcome, DR Evil Tiwn. Congratulations to our latest entry into Valhalla, DR God td. I'm trying to tidy up my cloud now so you can come to visit, and we can talk shows.

One of the friends in the Christmas pic I posted some weeks ago does a variations on chicken cordon bleu that is to die for, but I have no clue to the recipe.

As for me, good old Southern fried chicken hits the spot with me any time.

Somebody's gonna cook my chicken later today, aren't they?

td's chicken dijonaise

5 or 6 Skinless Chicken Breasts
1 Cup Dried Bread Crumbs (cracker crumbs will do nicely, too)
2 Teaspoons Dried Basil
1 1/2 Teaspoon Onion Powder (optional)
2 Eggs slighly beaten
Dijon Mustard (or any prepared mustard) to taste

1/2 Cup Cooking Oil

Combine dry ingredients.
Spread one side of chicken breast with mustard.
Roll spread breast in dry crumb mixture.
Dip breast in eggs.
Roll breast in dry crumb mixture.

Cook breasts in skillet with heated oil, allowing minimum of 6 minutes per side.

Allow to stand five minutes after cooking.

Serve on bed of rice or pasta of choice.

Nice to have another DVD site to visit. I used the link above to register, took only a couple of minutes, and seemed to work just fine. Haven't posted anything there yet, but will report problems if and when I do.

I'm just an old fogey, I guess, but I do use terms of endearment when deemed appropriate, especially if there is someone important in my life.

Sorry, DR MBarnum, about not having electricity. In cases like that, work becomes a haven of sorts. Three years ago, my furnace went out while I was playing Bob Cratchit in SCROOGE. Not only was I still teaching then (my last year), but the production company had the kids playing my children and I (and the actress playing my wife) booked all over town to sing and dance "Christmas Children" and "Good Times" as PR for the show. Ordinarily, I hate doing stuff like that, but my house was co cold, I welcomed work and those PR gigs to get out of my icebox house and into some warm environments. It took the heat installers something like three or four days (over a weekend when they didn't work) to finish the job, and OH, how miserable I was until they did!

We lost power for several days during an ice storm last year, too, but some dear friends with underground wiring and thus no loss of power took me in and saved me from the cold!

Just got out of a long meeting and I'm about to go to lunch. I think I will have a hot potato knish with mustard and hearty salad.

Even though we have all these lovely chicken recipes today, I think for dinner we may have pork chops with wild rice on the side. I'm trying to think of a vegetable to go with that. I do need to eat a balanced dinner after all.

Since I've returned from across the pond I find myself hungry. We ate so much in London and Nottingham (our friends went all out for us when we visited) that I have to readujst. I'm trying to eat smaller portions and I'm struggling to remember that just because it's there doesn't mean you have to finish it.

Speaking of weather, we may even get a little snow tonight! Different meterologists are viewing the cloud formations and temperatures differently, but some are saying we may get a 1 inch dusting of snow tonight. That would be pretty but not too debilitating for people to cope with here.

Welcome DR EvilTwin!

My roommate just came back from Christmas with her mother's Hungarian chicken recipe.  I bet it's not as good as what DR Panni could offer, though.

"This is far from exact or scientific.

Hungarian Chicken (for two)

6-8 chicken drumsticks
Brown the chicken in skillet for 20 min in butter - low to med heat
Turn chicken frequently; add water and simmer 20 mins - med heat
Cover chicken with generous amount of poultry seasoning and paprika - can add garlic or garlic salt, thyme, basil, parsley flakes
Add chopped peppers, onions, and/or potatoes
Cook another 30 min on med heat, adding water when necessary."

It's delicious!

DR Ben you are really making me hanker for a trip across the pond.  There are some fantastic airfare deals available now so it's very hard to resist temptation.

BK, darling.  Don't you know, sweetie, why people don't use terms of endearment?  Well, bubbulah, in this day and age of political correctness, sugar, it is considered sexual harrassment.  People have lost jobs or had to attend "sensitivity" seminars (at Queen Agravain University no doubt) for telling a co-worker of the opposite gender that their dress/suit was attractive.  So, precious, until this world gets a sense of humor again, don't expect to hear those terms of endearment (except by Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger) very often again.

Your DVD site sounds great.  Do you also plan to have a listing of all announced upcoming DVD release dates?  I for one would find this most helpful, particularly if you could search by either title (to check when a certain title will be out) or date (to make a "shopping list" before going to the DVD store.

I make a sauce for chicken with sour cream and dry onion soup mix (sort of like the dip) that is delicious.  I fry boneless, skinless chicken breasts, add the sauce to the pan for the last couple of minutes and serve it over rice with a green vegetable.

It's not chicken, but with food the topic of the day I forgot to mention that I got a Cuisnart Ice Cream Maker for Christmas.  Since I was sick over the weekend I've only had the chance to use it once, but it was the best vanilla ice cream (oh - a Harnick-Bock reference) I've ever had.  This weekend I will try either the chocolate or strawberry.  It takes a little time (mostly waiting time, not actual work time) but is well worth it.

I'd be happy to give y'all my dad's fried chicken recipe, but I'm afraid it requires a special kind of flour that I have only found in Kentucky...it's pre-seasoned and it's called Kentucky Kernel. Cheesy, yes...tasty, most definitely. Anyway, dad thaws his chicken tenderloins and breasts in warm salt water and then dips them in an egg and milk mixture and then into the flour and fries them in vegetable oil. Put the chicken on paper towels to soak up any excess oil and then enjoy!

One of my favorite chicken recipes is really, really simple and quite tasty. Take boneless, skinless chicken breasts and put them in a glass casserole dish. Completely cover the chicken with tomato sauce and then pour in three bags of shredded cheese--your three favorite kinds of cheese (one bag of each)--and bake, covered, for three hours (or until cooked) at 350 degrees, stirring occassionally. Serve over wide egg noodles. It sounds sort of plain, but I assure you, it's TASTY. You can also add salsa, jalepenos, peppers, onions--whatever floats your boat. I wish I had an over so I could make it tonight!!

Oh! Welcome, DR Evil Twin. What show are you doing and where???

Gyu-Kaku was absolutely fantastic.  We arrived before 8 and closed the place at 11:30.  And the staff was SO friendly and personable.  But why shouldn't they be?  They bring you marinated meats, and YOU'RE the one cooking them, over a special only-found-in-Japan kind of charcoal.  Amazingly delicious.  This trip (and it was a long one) we can't complain about the food in Los Angeles because of Gyu-Kaku and August Chris.

My first major computer (after the Timex 1000 with a membrane keyboard and a whopping 1K of memory) was an Atari 800XL in 1984.

I first cut my computer teeth on a KAYPRO II which used 180K 5¼ floppys and ran CP/M as an operating system. The machine had two floppy drives, but with one floppy for the OP system, one for the Application, and one for the data files, there was lots of disc swapping. All of these for a mere $1600!

I also remember, somewhat fondly, my supervisor's response to my request to add a second 20MB hard dive to my XT: "I can't imagine a time when anyone would need more than 20MB of storage" - and this man was managing technical projects for a top-of-the-line Aerospace company. I think of him often when I notice the 1.4 GB database  files I have on my PC today.

Good morning one and all!

It is damn c-c-c-c-c-c-ooooollldddd outside today!  When I woke up, the first thing I heard on the radio was that it was -26C (-18F) with a windchill that made it feel like -38C (-36F).  Let's just say getting out of bed this morning was not the easiest of tasks

You guys (and gals) who posted near to 300 posts after I went to bed at 10pm EST are SICK! SICK I tell you! ;)

Welcome to new DR Evil Twin.

Courses Update:

1) Canadian Public Administration
The prof introduced the class as "the boringest one you will probably ever take in your academic careers" and then went on to prove it with a mini-lecture...

2) Canadian Church History
aka the WEIRDEST HIPPIEST CLASS EVER!!!! Not only am I convinced that the prof is stoned, he made us listen to Joni Mitchell ("Both Sides Now" is our class "anthem") and participation counts for 70% of our mark.  Participation!?!  What is this... elementary school?  The good news is that while he may be weird and more than a little hippie-esque he has a reputation of getting an incredibly diverse and socially important group of guest lecturers to come in to lead "discourse groups".  Last year he had Jacques Parizeau (former Premier of Quebec), the gay couple suing the province of Ontario for the right to marry AND Ethan Hawke.

3) Contemporary Western European Politics:
Boq's cell phone went off in class.  He had explained that his wife was nine months pregnant with their first child and was due this week in the last lecture.  He, and the class, were sweating bullets.  Of course, it turned out to be a wrong number ;)

And that was the drama that is McGill... for today at least :)

Okay secondly, I have decided to reinvent myself.  I want to change my hair.  If DR Andrea is reading this - she just fainted.  I have been opposed to all attempts to get me to try something new since a failed "grow it out" endeavour when I was 8.  I am due for a cut soon... I must start thinking what I want...

Chicken Recipe:  I like chicken, but overall it is not my favourite thing to eat (being far too boring for "special" occasions when I normally go for fish or seafood if I'm in the mood for meat).  I will admit that all your recipes sound delish though. :D

Just wrote a long post which got nuked because the work computer wasn't logged on.  How annoying.  Anyway, I forgot to tell my internal clock when I needed to wake up so I didn't get out of my home environment until eight-fifty.  I'm here, but they've got actual work for me to do immediately (I have to write some stuff for other people's episodes - whatever will they do without me next week).

Meanwhile, keep the home fries burning and the recipes coming.  And please be patient with The DVD Place.  We literally just went live last night without any testing at all, so there will be hiccups, but they'll get everything to work as quickly as they can.  It's gonna be great.  Yes, there will be new release info via the home page links.  If you have continuing problems post about them here and they'll get answered and/or addressed.   Thanks, and I'll be back in a mo or a mo and a half.  I haven't even had time to do a fershluganah triple lutz yet.

Watching some of our Dear Readers grow up in front of our eyes will be quite interesting.

I had a delicious lunch. In fact, it was fantasmagorical (the word I should have used yesterday when describing our time in London, since we did see Chitty, after all). I will now go back to work, return home after that and do our laundry (since we have Friday evening plans) and then have our pork chops with wild rice for dinner.

DERBRUCER, I remember CP/M. My ex's brother had a KayPro and we used to try it out at family gatherings. I remember it was considered "portable" but I also remember that it weighed A TON!

Monsieur Pamplemousse, sounds like fun. I'll look for the books.

8 Tracks. Oh, my such memories are on this site today. I remember listening to an 8 track of Funny Girl, I think, on my sister's state-of-the-art sound system in her car. Ant actually has a couple of unopened 8 tracks out on LI. He found them at yard sales. Even with the camp value, I doubt they are worth much.

JRand: The Ford Foundation has politely declined your grant proposal for a replacement window crank for the passenger rear door of a 1959 Edsel Ranger. While they feel the pain of your father's disapproval of your actions in breaking the piece in the first place, unfortunately, when Mr. Edsel Ford when to the great parking garage in the sky, he took all the replacement parts with him. The grant administrator at Ford suggests that you buy your father a 2004 Ford Mustang to get back in his good graces.

Congrats to BK on the new DVD site!

I don't know any recipes, but chicken marsala, fried chicken, chicken parmesan, coq au vin, etc. are all delish.  I love me a good chicken salad sandwich too...not necessarily chicken of the sea  ;)

Welcome to new DR Evil Twin!  The show at Dillion's sounds great, I wish I could see it!  I think a Donna Murphy impression is a wonderful touch...she's one of my favorite Bway stars.  Did you see her in Wonderful Town yet?

Ben--I used to love the Paddington Bear books!

I have two Paddington bears. One is a wind-up and the other is a small, cuddly ball of fluff.

Paddington Bear cartoons are on the BBC in the morning as part of children's morning television but alas, they don't play DangerMouse nor do they have Roland Rat, Superstar anymore. I still have my Roland Rat mug from my first trip to England.

From the Food Network, Tyler's Ultimate, one of his church social recipes:

Braised Red Cabbage with Apple (prep time: 30 minutes; serves: 8)

1 head red cabbage, about 2 pounds
2 tablespoons butter
1 onion, sliced
2 Granny Smith Apples, cored, peeled and sliced
1 tablespoon chopped dill, plus more for garnish
2 bay leaves
1/2 cup chicken broth, low sodium
1/3 cup cider vinegar
2 tablespoons sugar
Salt and pepper, to taste
Quarter the cabbage and cut away the core, then cut the quarters into thirds. Rinse in cold water and set aside. In a large stockpot, melt butter over medium heat. Saute the onion and apples for 2 minutes until they begin to soften. Add the chopped dill, bay leaves, cabbage, and broth. Cook for 5 minutes until it begins to wilt. Stir in the vinegar to preserve the red color. Add sugar, salt, and pepper and cook for 20 minutes until the cabbage is soft, stirring occasionally. Garnish with fresh dill before serving

Four pages of posts already! Impressive. I'm... you guessed it... very BUSY today, so I won't have time to read the posts until later. But here's a recipe for Chicken Paprikás (the "s" when alone in Hungarian is pronounced "SH" - thus there is no need to spell it "paprikash" as is often done by non-Magyars like the esteemed bk.)

The Recipe for PAPRIKÁS CSIRKE (pron: "CHEERKEH"):

Steal one chicken (...couldn't resist)

Use skinless chicken breast, legs. Cut breast into quarters (or smaller if your prefer).
Put a little oil into a large pot. Dice an ONION into pot and sauté until starts to get reddish. Then add a diced GREEN PEPPER.
Add salted CHICKEN PARTS and sauté until meat starts to turn white (10 mins? or less)
Then add a sliced, peeled TOMATO and 2+ tablespoons of PAPRIKA (I usually add more as I'm cooking) Try to get real Hungarian paprika - the flavor is much better.
After about 10 mins. add enough water to almost cover mixture and add SALT.
Cover the pot and cook on low until done (about 45 mins - but this can vary.)
(Some people add sour cream to all this. Hungarian Jews tend not to do that, so I grew up sour cream-less in my chicken paprikas. I have no idea of how much or when to add sour cream and I don't like it with sour cream so DON't DO IT if you're inviting me.)

Now here's a bonus:

NOKERLI (LITTLE DUMPLINGS)

Easy to make and superb with above. If you don't want dumplings, you can add raw diced potatoes to above during last 20 mins of cooking. Or you can simply boil up some potatoes. But I recommend the dumplings.

Beat 3 EGGS in large bowl.
Add 2 cups FLOUR, pinch of salt and 1 1/2 tblspns. OIL
Add WATER as needed until dough is sticky and spoon can stand up in it
BOIL a large pot of water.
Put the dough you've made on a wooden cutting board. Take a little at a time on the end of a spoon and drop it into the water (You'll have to experiment with the size - not tooo big, not too small). Leave about 10 mins.
Drain and Rinse the dumplings with cold water when done.

Hungarian cucumber salad is lovely with this. But you can figure that out for yourself.

DR Ben, the lovely lady in that picture frame behind me is actress Anne Kimbell. She worked quite a bit on the stage and somewhat in films and lots of television during the 1950s. She owns a theater in Colorado now, as well as working at USC during the school year. Some of her films include: MONSTER FROM THE OCEAN FLOOR, GIRLS AT SEA, WAGONS WEST, BOMBA AND THE GOLDEN IDOL,  PORT SINISTER, and others...she is seen briefly in, MILDRED PIERCE,  BY THE LIGHT OF THE SILVERY MOON, and TWO TICKETS TO BROADWAY. Aren't you glad that you asked! Her stage work, however, is a bit more upscale...both on Broadway and in London!

She is one of my favorite actresses and quite a wonderful lady, and my interview with her will be published quite soon (hopefully this month!)

Ah, yes, DR Ben (I guess in our current mode of Ts of E's I should try Beloved Ben) your ownership of a Roland Rat mug is world reknown (if BK can spell “know” as “now”, I guess we can use “reknown” in place of “renown”): a Yahoo search yields your previous confession:

"I do love a good breakfast and a great breakfast is the full English or Irish breakfast. I remember them fondly from my travels through Europe in 1988. I also remember a puppet character from a morning London news/talk program, Roland Rat (I have a Roland Rat mug), demanding his "proper English breakfast). Roland, btw (by the way) is not related to DangerMouse, except by species…."

As you may now (BK talk for "know") Roland's Mum, Anne Wood, also spawned "Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa Laa and Po", arguably the most annoying quartet since the Musketeers added one.

...Some people add sour cream to all this. Hungarian Jews tend not to do that, so I grew up sour cream-less in my chicken paprikas..

Gee, every Jewish family I knew in Philadelphia kept at least one dis-contnted cow so they would never lack for sour cream. How do the HJs serve their borscht?

The Foody web sites all call for sour cream:

Paprikash.com (http://www.paprikash.com/) advises:

When the onions are fully cooked, add corn starch or flour as a thickening agent, by mixing it into the remaining broth and pouring it into the pan. (If you're out of broth, use water.) Keep the heat at a simmer level, and let it thicken.

Finally, add lots of sour cream, and maybe some more paprika (you really can't have too much), and it's ready to serve over spaetzel.

Note: you'll probably want to add lots of salt. I shudder to say how much I like, so I will merely instruct you to "season to taste".

The Epicurious Dictionary (http://eat.epicurious.com/dictionary/food/index.ssf?DEF_ID=3060&ISWINE=) defines:

paprikás csirke
[PAH-pree-kash CHEER-kah]
Also called chicken paprikash , this Hungarian dish consists of chicken and onions browned in bacon drippings, then braised with chicken stock, paprika and other seasonings. A sauce is made from the braising liquid mixed with sour cream. Although chicken is traditionally used, versions of this dish are also made with meat and fish.

It isn't kosher to mix meat and dairy.  Borscht doesn't doesn't have meat so it is okay to add the sour cream.

You misunderstood me. DERBRUCER. I love sour cream. I just don't like it in Chicken Paprikas. Of course Hungarians have lots of sour cream around! We practically bathe in the stuff. I don't think it was a religious issue with us, DR Jane. We certainly didn't keep Kosher. It was more of, dare I say it, a class thing. It was considered (by my mother, at least - whose name btw was Agnes) a "peasant" way of cooking to add sour cream to Chicken Paprikas. We were sophisticated city folk.

(You folks not familiar with the South may not realize that it's common to have three meals a day -- Breakfast, Dinner and Supper.  Dinner is the same thing as Lunch.  And in the South, the terms are interchangeable.   Supper is the same thing as Dinner is in other regions, including the South, too, whereas in some circles, "Supper" is a late-night repast.

Dearest BK:

You may be delighted to know I logged on to your new DVD site (or maybe not!).

Needless to say, my eagle eyes (the only part of my body still functioning) noticed the following in your intro:

"...Paige O?Hara..."

I presume you have some minion lined up to take the fall.

BTW DR DerBrucer, the recipe I posted is my late mother's and she was a superb cook. And I'm not a shabby cook, myself, although I don't do it much... And I've made this recipe hundreds of times and people love it. It's really good. Trust me. Forget the bacon drippings (pardon me while I vomit)! I do agree with the Paprika site or whatever it was you quoted, that there can never be too much Paprika - well, yes, there CAN, but if you keep tasting as you go and use good paprika, you won't be sorry.

I am cuddled up in a blanket in my basement, cat en-lap, tea in one hand and linguistics textbook in the other.  What better way to spend a winter's day?

It is indeed very cold. Which is why I have not left my house today. I have decided that a 8:30 class (my only one), combined with a nasty, nasty cold and flu like symptons can allow me to stay home and catch up on my homework.

How strange that you were able to predict getting this "cold and/or flu" on Monday after hearing today's predicted weather report! ;)

As usual your story is very interesting.  I'm sure your way is much better for you than with the sour cream.

I love terms of endearment...

When I call my boyfriend "darling" or "honey" in public, uptight straight folks get awful stiffbacked.

By the way, it'll be great to have a deeveedee sight written by people who actually know something about what they're writing about!  What a concept!  Who woulda thunk it?   All of the deeveedee sights out there (that I know about, at least!) are good only for getting street dates for upcoming titles.

And the message boards...well, forget it!  I will admit to liking the movie Freddy vs. Jason to a junky extent, but the idea that it's somehow a serious piece of art (to one extreme), or that it "RULZ" (to the other extreme), sentiments both of which I'd read on deeveedee message boards, is not only ludicrous, it's laughable.

May you and Mr. Redman have all the success in the world with this new endevor, and may it's influence and intelligence cross over to other, and already lesser, websites.

I feel extremely gratified to have stumped the bottomless well of knowledge that is HHW.  Here are the answers:

The musical:  House of Flowers
The legendary star:  Pearl Bailey (don't quibble, darling, she was a legend in at least her own mind), who would go on to star in Hello, Dolly!, which made history by being the first then-currently running musical to continue its run with an all-black cast
Supporting Cast #1:  Ray Walston, who left this show for his Tony turn in Damn Yankees
Supporting Cast #2:  Diahann Carroll, who won her Tony for No Strings,  a show with unusual elements including:  1) an interracial romance; 2) lyrics by Richard Rodgers; 3) orchestra with no strings; 4) orchestra onstage
Supporting Cast #3:  Geoffrey Holder, who won his Tony (directing) for The Wiz, which like the Dolly! recasting was an all-black musical (and also, stretching a bit, based on an all-white musical, though that was a film).
TV Credits:  Walston in My Favorite Martian; Carroll in Julia; Holder in 7Up commercials

Yes, I have entirely too much time on my hands today.  I've tried washing it off, but it's stuck (not in SF).

Title: Re:TERMS OF ENDEARMENT

Geoffrey Holder won a Tony for the costumes he designed for THE WIZ, also.

Thanks JMK. Too early for me to even research. interesting question but there is no way I would have come with an answer with a WIZ connection. One of my least favourite musicals. I don't think we ever had "Julia" on OZ TV and certainly never 7-up commercials.  I don't think 7-up could make the grade here - much as "Whitmans" were doomed to failure in the Chocolate world.

Also, 1957 Holder acted in an all-black production of "Waiting for Godot" and In 1978 he directed and choreographed the lavish Broadway musical "Timbuktu!" (Which had one of my favorites: Eatha Kitt! I remember high school days spinning the 45 and hearing her growl:

"I wanta be evil, I wanta drink booze, and whatever I have, I'm willing to loose..."

I've been doing a little research today on the movie of MAME, but I can't find what its original budget was. Does anyone know? I'm asking because looking at the film again, I was startled by the tinny sounding orchestra. Could they not afford a larger one, or were they afraid more pieces would drown out the frog-voiced Miss Ball? I was just curious how much was spent on this notorious flop?

Good afternoon!

I'm home!  I'm home!  I'm home!

-For a few days at least, but I'm home...

And my roomie took down his (kind of ugly) Christmas decorations. ;)  Of course, the sink is full of dishes, but I expected that... he "warned" me last night when we were chatting on-line.

I've even made a quick trip to Ukrop's (my favorite grocery store - period!) and CVS for some supplies.  Later tonight, I'll attempt to put away some of my clothes, kitchen supplies, etc.  I just need to clear enough space so I can sleep in my bed tonight.

I got a little bit of a late start this afternoon - getting all my stuf packed up was fast and easy... putting it all in the car took a little bit of time and creativity.  I just had a little bit more stuff than I thought I had.  It wasn't major amounts of stuff, but I got plenty of exercise loading and unloading the car.  The rush hour traffic also started early today out of DC.  Thankfully, nothing came to a standstill, but it was a little slow for a few miles there.  In any case...

I'm home!

-And what a lovely number of posts to catch up on!

Well, I need to do some cleaning, and then I'm heading out for a late dinner with a friend.

As for the chocolate mentions today...

Now I want a Violet Crumble bar and/or a Crunchie!

Or some Fredo Froggies - milk, white and caramel...

Or some Chocolate Rocks from Chocolate Box - actually, I think I still have some of those left... as well as two boxes of Frangos - original (chocolate mint) and an assortment of their other flavors...

Or some Turkish...

Or...

..And I still have that one pound box of fudge from Williams-Sonoma - 1/2 pound of dark chocolate, 1/2 pound with black walnuts.

OH, and when I was at Ukrop's, I finally saw - and bought - a bag of Peanut Butter M&M's.  *My roomie is actually allergic to chocolate, so these should be safe for him to eat.

Some more chicken: here are two more recipes that my mother made all the time.  She always used legs or thighs as we are not fond of chicken breast, but I think these would work just as fine with them.

3/4 cup cooking oil
1/2 cup dry white wine
1 clove minced garlic (or more, depending on how much you like garlic)
1 finely chopped medium-sized onion
1/2 teaspoon celery salt
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme, tarragon or rosemary (or all of the above)

Pour over the chicken and marinade for a few hours.  Make sure chicken pieces are turned every so often so that they get evenly coated.
Bake at 300-350 degrees for 20 minutes, then for another 10 minutes after you turn them over and then for 5 minutes on broil to give them a brown coating.

---

Chinese-style chicken

Chop up chicken into chunks
Chopped green onion
White pepper
Oyster sauce

Add small amount of water to coat chicken to make sure a sauce is created during steaming.

Steam in a bowl for about 20 minutes, or until all of the pieces are cooked.

Remember that wonderful line by Jane Fonda in 9 TO 5 as she's telling her ex-husband off about her activities since they've been separated: "If I want to play sex games or do M&Ms, I will." And Lawrence Pressman, wonderful actor that he is, looks at her so  disbelievingly, "M&Ms?" I break up laughing just thinking about it now.

Hey, Gang!

I've been trying for three days to get to my house - snowed out, folks - and the plow-guy said it'll be days yet. Oy. Gotta get up there and get my stuff! Anyhow, I've been computer-less for a few days. Been staying at one or another quaint/rustic motels along Hwy 2, east of Monroe, WA. Quaint sometimes means NO PHONE. Oy.

The good news is that, as soon as I plugged in  few moments ago, I got mail from Bristol Riverside Theatre in Bristol, PA - 10 minutes south of Trenton, 20 minutes north of Philly - and my matinee is sold out, so they ADDED A SATURDAY EVENING SHOW!!! Oh, happy me. (Seattle Fringe Theater Fest absconded with ticket money from most of the shows in Sept, and I am still feeling a tad pressed for cash, dontcha know... and now, a double fee in February!!!) Hey, if any of yuz are anywhere near, please come see mah show, okay? Jeez, I didn't even ask if this shameless self-promotion was permitted here on HHW... hope you'll take no offense.

All the chicken recipes sound so tasty... I'm gobbling crap from the local market, don't even bother to heat it in this yarr microwave. Gimme back my stove and my house!!! But i digress, Babycakes, bubbeleh, Honey-Heinie. Okay, so that's it from the Cozy Rest Motel... love, Penny

DR Penny O. Thanks for the "Baby Cakes" reference and congratulations on the extra show bookings. Why Baby Cakes? Do any DRs know if "Baby Cakes" has been filmed yet in the "Tales Of The City" Series.- I did read (was it here?) that it was being made as a Telemovie rather than a series like the first three books.

Oh, and DR Jennifer - There was an ad for Shell stations that now have "ABMs" in them.  So...  And there was another ad on the page that referred to ABMs.  So.. ???

I'm assuming ABM is automated bank machine?

Why would a shell gas station have one?

I dunno, maybe that article was from toronto. Maybe they call them that there. Or maybe french people call them that? All i know is that I have never heard the term before.

Well done, JMK, you did stump us all.  I looked at House of Flowers, but didn't recognize Holder's name.  I bow to your superior (this time :)) trivial mind!

The first time that I heard of him was in Rex Harrison's "Doctor Dolittle."  He played Willie Shakespeare.

Shortly after I saw that movie for the first time (in the 1970s), he started doing the 7Up commercials.  "7Up...doesn't have caffeine.  Never had it...never will.  Never had it...never will.  Never had it...never will.  Never had it...never will."  I will always remember that he said "Never had it...never will" four times in the commercial.

Good evening , Everyone!

I'm happy to say that I'm feeling much, much better and am  typing this on the bus ride home.

I'm sorry, Bruce, but I didn't  get the chance to start your book.  It was all over the page and I was fiddling with the screen adjustments to make it fit.  Then I found out I should have converted it into something called “tag format” to make it fit the PDA's screen.  That will be tonight’s task when I get home.

I should have known it wouldn't be as simple as just an upload to the PDA.  Sigh!

One other bit of news.  The director of our department came over to my desk and said he was very sorry to hear about my fish dying.  You could have knocked me over with a feather!  I never expected him to say anything.

He asked if I was going to get another one and I said I wasn't sure.  He said that if I did, he knew it would be well taken care of.  That was very nice of him, don't you think?

Oh, and before I forget, we have a little difference of opinion about something in the office so I thought I would ask you.  When you write a letter and you put xxx's and ooo's on the bottom that means hugs and kisses, right?  Well the question is, which are the hugs and which are the kisses?  I say the x is the hug, the o the kiss but some say it's the other way around..  What do you say?

My bus stop is next!

Well, now I’m home and have been playing with the PDA to try to get the Adobe Reader to take the “tag format” without any luck.  I guess I’ll have to try again this weekend.  I did everything I could think of but it says it can not be converted.    Sigh.  Guess I should have just got the hardcopy.  The only convert you have to do is from the page to the brain.

Welcome to the new people!  “Evil Twin” is an unusual name.   ;)

I don’t remember reading that Errol Flynn’s son made a movie.  Is it available anywhere?  Was he a chip off the old block, looks wise?

I would like to visit Errol’s grave someday and put some flowers on it if it would be allowed.

As far as endearments go, the only reason I have a problem with them is if they are not meant or used as way to be demeaning or condescending.

I looked at the new site for just a second because I was trying to work with the PDA and am very impressed.  Will the DVD section just be about current releases or can we talk about old favorites as well?

I read where some of you are having a problem signing on.  If you look at the thread on Broadway World.com  Rob said it wasn’t ready for the general public yet but those with a BBW sign on could get on the board.  Correct me if I’m wrong but that might be why your having a problem signing on.

Well I want to go have another look/see at the new place but I will be back.

XXXXX  OOOO
Title: Re:TERMS OF ENDEARMENT
Post by: George on January 08, 2004, 05:29:00 PM
The way I've always used them is that the ooo's are hugs because it's like they encircle you and the xxx's are kisses because they're like when you pucker your lips. :-*

I have not interviewed Dave Draper but I have been in contact with him. He helped with some info I needed for my Reg Lewis interview and he, in fact, outbid me on a muscle magazine that I needed for an article. He mailed it to me so that I could get some info out of it and make a copy of the cover to illustrate my article. He seems like a very nice guy and I did get him also to sign some photos for me, as well. He has his own website now.

Yes, I am partial to Gordon Scott, and he is my favorite Tarzan...but it might be a toss up as far as to who I think is the best looking Tarzan...I would have been more then pleased to swing on a vine with either Buster Crabbe or Mike Henry.

DR Jane: In the "Everyday" chocolates category, Cadbury would rule in Oz. Lindt is very popular as are Begian chocolates. We do have our own specialst companies such as Newmans who do prduce excellent confections.
Whitman Samplers attempted to break into the Oz market a few Christmases ago. The box was attractive but people did not go back for more! too sickly sweet and not smooth enough.

Cadbury isn't as good here.  My all time favorite chocolate is Lindt milk chocolate.  When we went to Canada this summer I was able to buy an extra large, extra fat bar in the duty free shop.  Whitman's on the other hand is terrible.  I am always surprised when I see it in our store, which doesn't happen much anymore.

Sad to hear about Ms. Thulin's demise, but dvd watchers will be able to see her soon in the controversial film, THE DAMNED, which is on its way from MGM.
I also remember THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE, though the music stirred me more than the story.
She was also unforgettable in a couple of Swedish flicks, HOUR OF THE WOLF and CRIES AND WHISPERS.

Going waaaay back to an early post today from Dear Reader Jose:  Dear Reader Jose, I have seen your hair, and I cannot imagine at all how it could take more than an hour for someone to cut it.  Do they do it one hair at a time?

More hair advice:  Dear Reader Emily, if you don't go for the MBarnum buzz cut, have you considered a mullet?   :o

My favorite term of endearment:  "cupcake."  I call people "doll" and "darlin'" all the time.  Haven't been slapped yet.  (That is, for calling people "doll" and "darlin'.")

A question for Dear Readers, even though it is not Wednesday and Ask Dear Reader Day:  I have an opportunity to see a one-night-only performance of I'm Getting My Act Together And Taking It On The Road, starring Sharon Lawrence.  I am unfamiliar with the play as well as the artist.  Is this something I want/need to see?

If you've never heard this score, then I would say emphatically, "YES!"
"Old Friend" will hook you. . .

Good evening, DR's. I have been tres BUSY all day, and haven't been here long enough to get through posts until now. School, work, homework, cleaning, etc.

And I am officially addicted to WICKED. "Defying Gravity" is amazing, the ending is...perfect. The first (and second, and third, and fourth...) time I heard it, I got all spacey and when I "woke up" I had tears in my eyes. I love that. While it isn't perfect as a whole, the message behind the words is beautiful.

I didn't get to go to Laura's get-together, although I wanted to VERY much, but school has to come first this week. I'm sure it's still going on, that's why she hasn't posted. Those college kids and their wild parties...;).

The few terms of endearment that I cannot stand are "Dollface", "Baby", and "Honey". I love "Darlin'", "Babe", and "Cupcake". I also have a friend who calls me "Sunshine", which is a nice. My mornign is a little brighter when I hear him yell "Hey, sunshine!" down the hall. My dad calls me "Sweetie", which I hadn't ever really thought about until today. Every night he says "Goodnight, sweetie, love you."...I should start appreciating these things.

I'm 16. I do not COOK. I merely thank my mom for making whatever she makes and then I enjoy it. Therefore I have no chicken recipes besides "Open Schwanns Grilled Chicken Bag...Take one piece out...Put chicken on plate, and microwave on High for 1 minute. Enjoy."

Emily, I think you should go straight, slightly choppy in length, with sideswept bangs in the front. It would frame your face, making it look more elongated. And with the choppy straightness, you have a few options, like flipped in, flipped out, clipped up in various ways, etc. If you actually STRAIGHTEN it, it would probably be better in the long run, but you can also just buy a flatiron and use that. MATRIX makes some great Straightening Products (shampoo, conditioner, gel) that work with your hair tools. I love em!

Time to sleep, hopefully I'll post a little more tomorrow!

Love,

Sarah, Official HHW Hair Consultant.

DR Emily: The best thing for a woman to do when it comes to changing how they wear their hair is to sit down with their stylist, with several magazines in hand, and discuss what you both see.  First round of eliminations: What do you like?  Second round of eliminations: Are the styles that make it through the first round things that your stylist is comfortable doing?  (This can make a big difference!  It will also let you know how honest a stylist you have.)  Third round: What styles do the two of you agree would make you look good?

This is time consuming, but worth the effort.

As for Jay's question about Jose's haircut taking so long: well, heck yeah!  I've been wearing mine in a flattop for years, not too dissimilar to MBarnum's (from the hairline up).  Easy cut, right?  Wrong.  Roger, the fellow who did the cutting back in Long Beach for the last seven or eight years, would take a half hour, getting it exactly right, level and even.  And I knew that, even after a month and several washings, it would still look good.  And nothing can get a fellow to looking seedy faster than a buzz cut gone wrong.  (It has taken DR TCB years to get that look down pat, I'm sure, but I could match him in two months if I let myself go.   ;D)

Terms of endearment I don't like: "Dear"... "Honey"... "Sweetie"...

Do like... This is mortifying, but under the right circumstances, I like "baby"... C'mon, it can be very sexy.
"Love"...with a British accent only.
"Anna Banana" said fondly, as opposed to the kids yelling it out in the schoolyard.
My stepfather used to call me "Csuri"...which is "pee" in Hungarian. I don't know why, so don't ask me. But it was kinda sweet. As in Sweet Pea (only it was Pee). I was young, so gimme a break.

Should I make an appointment with a therapist now?

DR Jay - It would have taken me an hour to drive to the barber, get my hair cut (about 10 minutes), and then drive back home.  It's a good 20-25 minutes from my parents' house, but worth the drive.  And, heck, it's only a $10.00 cut!

However, I used to go to a ritzy salon in DC years ago - Mrs. Bush (the first one) used to get her hair cut there - as well as other First Ladies.  Nice set up.

Well, James would cut my hair there.  And he would do it all with scissors - no guides, no clippers.  All by hand.  It would take about an hour or so - well, James would take an hour of so.  Sometimes his boss would walk by sometimes and ask him why he just wasn't using clippers.  James would always respond, "This is art! not gardening!"  :)  And to this day, I have yet to pay as  much for a haircut as I did back then... I think I would pay about $50.00 - which included the tip.  But it was so worth it - and the service was impeccable - cappucinos and Haagen-Dazz bars were included!

And, I'd also go see the show - Interesting score, some nice numbers, and Sharon Lawrence is all right too.

When it comes to ToE, I've always called der Brucer "Tugger."  Well, not always, because I do know his real name, but it's what I call him.  It's a T. S. Eliot reference.

DR SWW - My haircut is truly a buzz cut lately - a 2 on the sides, 4 on the top, taper the corners.  So, it's a quick cut.  However, I used to get a flat-top, and, like you said, that can take some time - always a few "sleepers" popping up here and there.

I forgot to comment on Ingrid Thulin. I liked her so much. CRIES AND WHISPERS was a real earth shaker for me.

Back from the final performance of BARBER OF SEVILLE for this season. It sounded great, but I really didn't want to be there...my co-workers were OUTRAGEOUSLY bitter and hateful tonight and I wanted no part of it. I didn't have the patience for it. Anyway, I'm home now, so...

Re. chocolate: We have Lindt chocolate all over the place here in NYC and Cadbury is pretty accessible, too. My favorite chocolate bar, though, is the Galaxy bar, which I've only been able to find in England. It's WONDERFUL! Just plain ole' milk chocolate that sticks to the roof of your mouth. YUM.

I had chicken for "lunch" and for "dinner." So much chicken...and now I'm hungry again.

Hey, I'm not sure if anyone has commented on the Tony nominating committee decisions today...

The one I'm most "concerned" about is the Leading Actress in a Musical Category.  Both ladies from Wicked will be put in that category, Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel.  Hmm... I wonder if they will cancel each other out, leaving Donna Murphy to walk away with number Three!  -Of course, I've been hearing from a lot of people that if Caroline, or Change actually moves to Broadway, that Tonya Pinkins will win her second Tony.

Oh, and after next week, I'll be able to judge for myself!  :D

Ohh.. DR Jason - I believe the chocolate shop near me in Richmond has Galaxy bars... Hmmm.. If so, maybe I'll bring a few up with me next week.

The Australian Cadbury is different from the American Cadbury - and the English Cadbury as well.  Just goes to show you how the environment can affect the ingredients - even if the ingredients and proportions are the same.  While in OZ, I also enjoyed Darrel Lea, Chocolate Box, and some of the various "boutique makers" at one of the department stores - that was quite the candy counter!  The organic Tasmanian chocolate was incredible!!

I really don't buy that "canceling each other out" stuff, especially at the Tonys. Lots of people from the same shows are nominated and one manages to win. Case in point, last year three ladies from NINE were in the supporting category and one managed to win. Three supporting actors from THE PRODUCERS were up and one managed to win. Two lead actors from THE PRODUCERS were up and one managed to win.

I think people nowadays vote for the person and not the show. Maybe I'm naive, but I do really believe it works that way now.

Enjoyed watching the national figure skating short programs tonight. Matt Savoie and Johnny Weir skated clean and entertaining programs on the men's side, and Sasha Cohen, Michelle Kwan, Jenny Kirk, Angela Nikodinov, and Amber Corwin all did well on the ladies' side. Finals on Saturday.

As for poor Timothy Goebel, he may have reached his zenith in years past. No chance to go to the worlds this year (unless the USFSA decides to place him on the team - highly doubtful after tonight's performance; he finished 10th missing every jump he tried.)

DR MattH - I wasn't implying that "cancelling each other out" was a negative in this situation.  Just that both actresses have their fans, and it's very possible that they could "divide" the Wicked votes...  In the end some ONE has to win.  And, who knows? -ties are possible too.

But then it's not the fans who vote.  It's assumed (but we know what can mean) the people who vote will chose someone because of their talent and skill as a performer, not whether or not they like the person.

I have to admit that I have the original cast album but I've never listened to it.  I have heard a couple of songs from it..."Old Friend" being the one that has probably been recorded the most.  I've always thought (more so when I was younger) that the picture on the cover is kinda weird.  Maybe that's why I haven't listened to it:

Other than that, if I remember correctly (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong), Sharon Lawrence was originally supposed to play Lili Vanessi in the revival of Kiss Me, Kate with Brian Stokes Mitchell but didn't when she got her sitcom (which didn't last very long...although I really liked it) so they got Marin Mazzie to play Lili.  (Sound familiar?  Can we say Kristen Chenoweth in Millie?  Although she hasn't done too bad for herself since!)

Sharon had a variety special on TV and she was very good.  I really would have liked to have seen her in KM,K (but I'm glad that I saw Marin).  She has a real strong belt voice and has Broadway credits:

According to www.ibdb.com, Sharon (http://www.ibdb.com/person.asp?ID=73954) played Tzeitel in the 1990 revival of Fiddler On the Roof with Topol, was in Chicago as a later "star" replacement and was a Kit Kat Girl (and others) in the 1987 revival of Cabaret with Joel Grey, Gregg Edelman and Alyson Reed.

AVENUE Q is quite hummable, DR Jed...I agree. But, for some reason, once I got WICKED, I couldn't stop listening. In fact, at one time I had "Defying Gravity" on repeat and I listened to it for HOURS. Sick? Yes. That song does something for me, though...it sort of inspires me. Is that stupid to admit? "As Long As Your Mine" is really growing on me, too...and Idina just blows me away in "The Wizard and I." If only I could sing pop like that! And don't even get me started on Ms. Kristi...she basically can do no wrong in my eyes...and I keep hoping her success will rub off on me, seeing how we graduated from the same school and all. ;D

Anyone noticed the really sad (sad "how unfortunate," not sad "boo-hoo") sounding clarinet solo in "As Long As Your Mine?" It's during the dialogue toward the end of the song...playing the main "dum-dee-dum-dum-dum-dummmmm" motif. It sounds overly-reedy, and it doesn't really color the song with the right, well...color. Clarinets are usually used to evoke a feeling of loneliness. This just sort of sticks out at you, like so much fish. But what do I know about orchestrations--I'm a singer!

Ok, I have just caught up on today's posts!

Interesting night, I must say. Thank you, Jed and Jennifer for asking about it (and Sarah for mentioning it)!

Well, the night ended at about 12:30 (too early!). It began this afternoon when I made cupcakes that my friend Tiff requested. I make them in ice cream cones and ice them to look like ice cream. They're very cute, and they're practically the only thing I make!

At around 4:30, I got a call from our very own Sarah, who said that she had to work, so she couldn't make it. I missed her, but I totally understand!

People were supposed to arrive at about 6:00, and I just waited around (and listened to Wicked until then. At around 5:55, I called my friend Laura to ask her a question, and like two minutes later, my cell rang...

Okay, I lied.  I'll add this:

I've listened to both Avenue Q and Wicked several times over the last few weeks.  They both have the plusses and minuses (pli and mini?) and I like them both very much for very different reasons (which I won't go into at this late hour because I don't want to).  But I've specifically listened to them in equal amounts.  For every new CD that I get, I try to make sure that I listen to it at least three times within the first week.  That way I at least become familiar with it to be able to decide if I actually like it or not.  I like both Avenue Q and Wicked.

Tom: I hope you know I wasn't trying to correct you...I just thought the song parody would be fun...

Who was on the phone, you ask? Drew. Yes, Drew. The boy who still makes me a little jittery (in a good way!) when I talk to/see him. He was on my street, he said, and just wanted to make sure he was at the right house. When I said yes, we hung up after saying we'd see each other in a few seconds.

Now, let me just say that this was something that sort of worried me. Back in high school, Drew was in the extremely popular group. We were friendly, but I can't say we hung out a lot. So yes, when I had invited him, I had expected to get a no. Well, I got a yes. While I was happy, I was also a bit nervous. I don't know why...I guess I'm just silly. Anyway, I was hoping and praying that someone would arrive before him because I didn't want to entertain him alone! Thank God Meg and Laura walked into the house before he did. Unfortunately Meg parked in the driveway before my dad got home, so she and Laura went to move the car. I don't know *why* it took two people to do that! This left Drew in the house with my mom and me, and of course, my mom, who had told me she didn't really want to entertain my friends (that was my job), started asking him about college and stuff. (more will follow)

It won't happen in a kazillion years!!!!!!!!

Tonight I got a copy of LIZZIE BORDEN starring our very own Ms. Allison Fraser. This is my first listen and I'm not quite sure what my thoughts are yet. It's so radically different from WICKED, which is what I've been marinating in for the last few weeks, that I'm suffering from genre shock. :) Overall, I think I'm enjoying it.

Jason, I also have that recording of Lizzie Bordon.  I think it's quite interesting and very good.  Do give it a chance.  Also, Alison Fraser has really grown as a singer since her first recording, which was (I think) In Trousers.  Her voice has improved so much...not that she was bad, but just seemed like she had no vocal training at that point in her life.

I suspect DR Ann is drowning in a sea of catchup. No not ketchup (unless she is feeling particularly saucy). I am becoming Americanised! We don't use the term "ketchup" in OZ.

If I recall correctly from my trip, you call ketchup (or catsup if you prefer) simply what it is: tomato sauce.

I remember when we had lunch on one of the various piers we had lunch on, and there were pitchers marked "tomato sauce".  Hmm... After some deducing - other pitchers were labeled "cocktail sauce", "tartar sauce", "malt vingegar", etc... I realized "tomato sauce" was indeed just "ketchup".  -Well, once I saw someone pour some "tomato sauce" out and saw what it looked like.. then when I poured some out and tasted it.

Hmm... Now I'm thinking about that amazing calamari I had... and the prawns... and the oysters... and the "mudbugs"... and the crab legs...

Off to bed, off to bed.  We don't need no stinking off to bed.  I'll be swacked and pickled in moonshine - I went off not to bed but to shave and blow me over with a macaroon if there wasn't a posting frenzy when I returned.  Although the beach babe still hasn't posted.

Now I'm listening to the Bernadette Peters' recording of GYPSY that a friend let me borrow. Hmm...I don't remember her sounding this good (and I use the term "good" VERY lightly) when I saw her...either time I saw her! In fact, the first time I saw her, she could barely speak, let alone sing. Her first line came out, "S-ng Ow --eez!"

DR MattH intimated that I might have something to say about the short program for men and women.

Goebel was a disaster.  Weiss once again gambled on a quad he couldn't hit.  Johnny Weir(d) is in first place with a clean skate but his individualism scares me.

I cannot warm up to Sasha Cohen no matter what she does.  Her costumes are horrible. She has no taste in that department at all.  She skates brilliantly, but I'm a bit tired of her stock moves...they're eye-catching but their not thrilling and have no emotional pull.

Kwan is perhaps THE most stunning, talented, gifted female skater of all time.  She gave up a trip to the Olympics at age 15 so that Nancy Kerrigan could go after dropping out of Nationals following an attack on her knee by Tanya Harding's husband's friend.  Tanya and Nancy have faded away.

She went to Nagano with Tara Lipinski and Nicole Bobek.  Tara and Nicole have faded away.

She went to Salt Lake City with Sarah Hughes and Sasha Cohen.  Sarah has now faded away and Sasha is trying to make her move.

Thing is, Michelle is as graceful and strong and fresh and original and stunning as ever.  I think Sasha will burn out and fade away...possibly before the next Olympics.

Finals are on Saturday night.  DR MattH is rooting for the best skater, but he secretly wants Jenny Kirk and Matt Savoie to upset the field.

After my mom kept conversation flowing (thanks, Mom!), Meg and Laura came in, and I put on some John Mayer. (My friends don't really enjoy musicals, and John Mayer is someone they enjoy.) We talked about stuff, and I flitted around. (I have a tendency to move around a lot when company is over. I like to make sure everyone is content with drinks/company/etc.) Soon Cristina, her little bro (my bro's friend), and Daisy arrived, followed by Aquila (my absolute best friend--I hadn't seen her in three years!) and two of her friends, Erica and Yvonne. Everyone got along wonderfully! People were chirping and giggling...we were loud! Still a few people were missing, so I decided to go call them at around 6:30-6:45ish.

I'm 16. I do not COOK. I merely thank my mom for making whatever she makes and then I enjoy it. Therefore I have no chicken recipes besides "Open Schwanns Grilled Chicken Bag...Take one piece out...Put chicken on plate, and microwave on High for 1 minute. Enjoy."

Wow...I wish I could still use that excuse...only I'm 21 now!

It's amazing about Wicked...people acknowledge that it isn't a great score, but it's just sooo addictive and fun.  It's easier (and more fun) to listen to than a lot of more "accomplished" scores.

I love Alison Fraser's voice...it's so unique.

Jed...I started getting all excited just a second ago because she was actually holding notes for their full value, and then, out of the blue, she started doing that weird "I'm losing my voice and can't hold it" thing where she cut words off without finishing them or only held the note for half of it's written value. She did that with EVERY sustained note when I saw her--both times--but especially that first show when she really had no voice and should have had Ms. Moore go on for her. The audience gave her a partial standing ovation when the curtain came up for act two simply because she was still there! I've never seen that before...

Mike, Mallory, and Tiff were still missing, as was Jeremy, so I called them. Tiff informed me that her group was not on its way. Jeremy's brother answered his phone and was thoroughly uninformed about his brother's whereabouts. I decided to go back and chat because we weren't planning to have dinner until 7:00. I returned to my seat on the floor next to Drew (funny how that worked out :P), and we looked through Aquila's yearbook (where I would have gone if I hadn't moved), while she and her friends looked through mine.

For those of you who would like to see a picture of Drew, here's one of him with the yearbook.

I'll take addictive and fun any old day.  Well, I went away for a brief moment to prep tomorrow's notes and topic and I come back and blow me over with a chicken fajita if we haven't made 18,000 posts - that's over 1,000 posts in two-and-a-half days - THAT is something!

All those people who went to bed early thinking we'd peaked at 325 will be VERY surprised when they arise.

At this point, I felt bad for Drew. I have quite a few guy friends, yes, but not all of them live in the area. Also, I didn't invite many of them. I basically asked four, and with the exception of my friend Mike Z, who had to leave for school early Thursday morning, they were all supposed to show. Poor Drew was the only guy here at this point. Keep in mind that I'm the only girl in my group who actually knows him pretty well. I mean, we used to write notes to each other in school...not many guys will willingly write notes! Anyway, I kind of felt like we were boring him (which he insisted wasn't happening at all). Still, he then told me that he had to leave at 7:30 because he had made two sets of plans tonight. Now, I totally understood (even if I wasn't pleased) because I said to get here at 6:00, and I guess most people would expect dinner right away. I just wanted to allot time for people to arrive, and if we served it at 6:00, only three people would have been there to eat!
