Well, you've read the notes, the notes had words and sentences and paragraphs, and now it is time for you to post until the blank cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: AFFIANCE!
-
Oh, my. It's 7:16am in New York and I'm making the first post after Bruce at 3:18am California time??? What's goin' on?
-
Me, Myself and I.
-
Here are a few early morning pictures. We are winding down and the last few pictures will be posted today and tomorrow.
First, remember those coconuts I mentioned? This bad boy fell from a tree and one of the foodies brought it in. After the picture he cut off the end, opened it and drained the "milk". Very tasty.
-
Here is a shot from our balcony.
-
A shot of my keeping busy.
-
After all that work I was allowed to jump into the pool.
-
Then we got dressed and went biking. An exciting couple, Anthony and I. We visited a cemetery.
-
Good morning gentlemen.
I am done posting pictures.
-
Until tomorrow, that is.
-
"This bad boy" Ant. fell from a tree? LOL
Thanks for the pics Ben
-
Put the lime in the coconut and call me in the morning.
-
Great pics this morning from DR BEN.....everybody into the pool!!
Thanks for the pics last night, DR DAKOTACELT.
-
Because I am neither chef nor cook of any kind, the most interesting thing I have done with fruit or vegetables is....eat them.
-
I always liked ARTISTS & MODELS - Martin/Lewis version....but Dorothy is a bit out of place, lovely to look at though.
Working again today. Oh well....
MR BK - sounds like rehearsals are going well. Did you say Mr Gene Castle was one of the HULLABALLOO dancers? Did he also appear in BILLIE with Ms Patty Duke and Mr Warren Berlinger?
-
Put the lime in the coconut and call me in the morning.
Sank you, Doctor. ;D
-
Well.....I finally got my screen to stop shaking. All I had to do was remove the empty "bookmark" toolbar. I thought my computer was broken.
-
Good morning DRs Jrand and Ben
-
Good morning DRs Jrand and Ben
Bit rainy here today, but that's all right. ;D
-
Dean Martin's "Innamorata" was from "Artists and Models".
Seeing that film and "Three Ring Circus" were childhood treats for my sister and me.
-
After all that work I was allowed to jump into the pool.
You, two, are so cute!
(That would be Ben and Ant, not you two.)
-
Good morning, Mr. oz. Good morning, Mr. 56.
-
I am going to try to work today. My back keeps getting worse and worse, but I refuse to give in to the pain. I am determined that nothing is going to keep me from seeing the WSMA at the end of June.
-
Cute they are indeed Mr TCB.
Good morning.
-
Warm and healing thoughts for you DR TCB.
(put the lime in the coconut)
-
Cute they are indeed Mr TCB.
Good morning.
As are you, Ozzie.
-
Warm and healing thoughts for you DR TCB.
(put the lime in the coconut)
Thanks, Tom.

We short folk are well known for our cuteness.

Did I scare Jack away?
-
Good morning, elmore!

He's been replaced by DR Elmore.

No never....not scared...still here...doing some other morning before work stuff. 8)

Regarding the burger conversation from last night (well Jose's musings on burgers anyway), there are two excellent burger places in Chelsea. One is in the Gayborhood of Eighth Avenue between 14th Street and 23rd Street. It's called
Better Burger (http://www.betterburgernyc.com/home.html)
I know, I know, if you're going to eat a burger, eat a burger, but these are good healthy burgers. You can get meat burgers, turkey burgers and veggie burgers and they have "healthy" hot dogs, if that isn't an oxymoron. The fries, cole slaw and chili sides are also very good. There are Better Burgers around the city with another location on 9th Avenue between 42nd and 43rd Street (close to FJL). I will go there sometimes if I'm seeing a show at Playwrights Horizons and I need a quick, tasty meal.
The other place is called
New York Burger Co. (http://www.newyorkburgerco.com/)
It's on Sixth Avenue between 21st and 22nd Street. They have very good burgers and very good hot dogs and all kinds of fixings. They also offer grilled chicken. If you're on a shopping excursion up or down Sixth Avenue and you get hungry I recommend it. You will leave full so you will need to continue your walking to work off the meal.
-
Off to work.....no burger for me today. :(
-
Bedtime in OZ.
It will soon be time for DR François to put in an appearance on the board.
-
What are the most creative things you’ve done with fruits and vegetables
I'm guessing bk means of the food variety...

Goodnight from OZ. Should I leave SwingShift in charge?

Goodnight from OZ. Should I leave SwingShift in charge?
Good night, DR Tomovoz. That would be a very bad idea.
-
I'm guessing bk means of the food variety...
I decided it would be unseemly to mention some stories - even about the food type!
-
DR DakotaCelt - thanks for sharing all your pictures last night! What a great trip.
DR Ben - love, love, love that shot of you and Ant in the pool!

No matter SingDaw - the blame will be upon Jose whatever eventuates.

I used to make a fruit pizza [really sort of a fruit tart] that looked something like this:

Interesting article here (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/01/AR2006090100365.html) from the Washington Post about the movie Godspell and filming at the WTC before it had opened to the public.
-
Apparently Joe Mantello will be directing The Ritz at The Roundabout, with Rosie Perez potentially playing Googie Gomez.
-
And Kevin Chamberlin (from Seussical) playing the Jack Weston role, I believe.
-
Good morning, all! Back to Toyland and then the NYPL! Hooray!
I spent a bit of last evening reading large sections of Ethan Mordden's new book on American theatre 1919-1959 ( I believe these are the dates on the cover ), and spent half the book wondering two things: was he relying on memory or had he actually reread plays since he missed things and why the proofreader was so lax. I also found it irritating that, because his audience is primarily musical theatre fans, he was constantly throwing in musical theatre references, including a photo of the Clambake number from CAROUSEL. I found what I read to be full of generalizations, unidentified sources for information he wasn't alive to have witnessed, and a smug, aren't-I-whimsical approach to writing.
TOD: Maybe later.

vegetables: friend or foe?
-
I loved Kitchen Kabaret at Walt Disney World.
The drag performer Hedda Lettuce is a favorite of some people here on HHW, I think.
-
Isn't there a restaurant somewhere called Lettuce Entertain You?
-
I tried take out from Better Burger, and it was a little messy in the packing. That turned me off to them a little (first impressions and all), but I must try it again.

Actually, Fred, you're correct, the package can get a bit messy, especially if you have lots of stuff on your burger. It's the kind of burger you need to eat with a fork (or your fingers). You pick up the fixings that fall off the burger but it's all wrapped in foil so you don't need to wash a plate ;)
-
Dan-the-Man, watch your mailbox.
-
Lovely pictures Ben of you and Ant!
It appears you both had a great time!
-
Thursday morning greetings! Since today's the last day of the month, I've turned my calendar because I prefer looking forward to looking back. The best news is that the month I'm looking at now includes NYC on the last 3 days!
In a few minutes, I'll be scooting to another window on my computer to attend a "webinar" about human services grantmaking in Ohio.
-
I, too, have enjoyed seeing the vacation photos posted by DRs DakotaCelt and Ben. Even after a 4-day holiday weekend:
I Still Need a Vacation!
-
Interesting article here (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/01/AR2006090100365.html) from the Washington Post about the movie Godspell and filming at the WTC before it had opened to the public.
I've been avoiding the GODSPELL movie for years. I find "Beautiful City" to be annoyingly grating on my ears. My chorus teacher in high school knew I hated it, and she would often drag it out and make us sing it, driving me to tears. (Of course, I was alone with my opinion--the song was loved by my peers.) Maybe I'll watch the DVD one of these days, and just turn down the sound when this number appears.
-
tod
glad that dr singdaw brought the clarification question first.
I will don't have a favorite to add to the topic, but singdaw's tart looks real good.
-
TOD:
Do pumpkins count? I can make killer Jack O'Lanterns. My sister and I did those intricate design carvings with regular kitchen utensils years before they became popular and were sold in sets with the easy to use tools.

And here, from our internal calendar, is the very Webinar of which DR Ginny speaks (along with some other events happening in our Cleveland office)

Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up.
And Martha Stewart was just asked about her shoes. Exciting, huh?
-
Good morning!
Warmer this morning, so opening everything up and blowing out the house with the attic fan is only partially refreshing this morning. From the looks of the five-day forecast, the nice, cool mornings are now a thing of the past. The central A/C is looking more and more like a coming reality.
-
I haven't seen ARTISTS AND MODELS since I was a kid. I loved all of the Martin & Lewis movies then. I find many of them unwatchable today, but I'd love to see this one again for the cast if nothing else.
Shirley has said that working on the film was pretty much a nightmare. M&L were in a very bad place by this time and never spoke to each other face to face. They would either talk about one another in the other's presence: Jerry to director: "Is he going to say it THAT way?"
or they would speak through intermediaries. Shirley got along with both of them very well, and liked them both. She didn't care for Hal B. Wallis (she always calls him "Hal B. Wallis" as she found him puffed up with his own importance) despite his owning her contract at the time.
-
I love fruit very much, and I wish it wasn't so expensive as I'd eat a lot more of it if it wasn't so high. As I grown older, I've developed much more a taste for vegetables, too. I was a very picky eater as a kid and wouldn't touch asparagus or brocolli or squash. Now, I love all of them.
Don't have any fancy cooking stories with them, however.
-
I guess I'll record STUDIO 60 again tonight (it may not be on much longer if it can't pull in higher than 3.9 million viewers against all rerun competition on the other networks).
But I plan to spend another day watching DVDs.

Ah, yes, Better Burger! Another good burger in NYC. Just be careful of their fries - which are baked :): those small wedges of potato are hot(!!). I've burned my tongue a few times thinking they had cooled off enough. However, one of their smoothies helps to ease the burn.
One additional "amenity" about the Chelsea location is that it is located near New York Sports Club, and there are usually some Chelsea "bois" and men in there for their pre- or post-workout meal.
The other place is called
New York Burger Co. (http://www.newyorkburgerco.com/)

You have excellent taste, DR Ben! :)
And there's also the similarly menu'd American Burger & Co. near Macy's on 32nd Street.

Forgot to mention--yesterday at lunch, my boss and I went for a walk and browsed around at Freeman's Auction House on Chestnut Street. They were showing a fine book and poster sale. As we strolled through the book section, I happened to glance on a shelf that had a copy of Albee's WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? I had thought that it must be autographed, so I gingerly opened to cover and flipped through the frontis pages. Sure enough, there were two signatures--the first was small and sort of printed and the other a large swirly script. I couldn't make out either "Edward" or "Albee" from the script, so I focused on the printed signature--Richard Burton. The other name became immediately recognizable--Elizabeth Taylor. I'm pretty sure my jaw dropped.
I planned to check out the Freeman's website when I got back to the office to see what the book was going for, but I got wrapped up in other issues and forgot about it until today. I just checked it out and the book was going for $200 to $400. Unfortunately, yesterday was the last day for the auction. Damn! I would have liked to have tried for that book.
-
So, the line-up will be ANGEL, THE CLOSER, MORNING GLORY, and an episode of PLANET EARTH which I want to see again now that I uploaded the new scaling firmware upgrade in the Blu-ray player.
-
Because I am neither chef nor cook of any kind, the most interesting thing I have done with fruit or vegetables is....eat them.
That's been the extent of my experience, as well. ::)

I am going to try to work today. My back keeps getting worse and worse, but I refuse to give in to the pain. I am determined that nothing is going to keep me from seeing the WSMA at the end of June.

Have a good day, all!

If you go in early are you allowed to leave early?

Heading down now to shave and shower since I'm having lunch today with best friend John.
WBBL.

BK, where is the book fair today?

How about collards and turnip greens......YUMMMMMMMM?
Or Swiss chard?
As for fruit, I think you'll find a vast price difference between supermarkets and farmer's markets, should you be inclined to seek one out.
I've gotten some wonderful bargains at farmer's markets...and the fruit is infinitely tastier...and fresher!
-
Well...it's the ultimate day of May.
I wonder. Has May been "depraved in every way" for any of you?
-
Tonight on tv we have the new Mark Burnett series Pirate Masters (in the Survivor timeslot on CBS). I am quite curious about this show since it sounds so odd.
We also have another So You Think You can Dance. And a new Studio 60.
BTW, re: last night's SYTYCD.
Besides having Benji's sister (how interesting to have benji, his cousin heidi and now his sister). I think she is very good. But I also think because she is benji's sister that people will vote for her.
I was so so so happy to get Hawk back (the asian guy with the british accent who got kicked off the show last year because he didn't have a work visa).
And wow that girl with the arm. I don't really think she's good enough to make the show. But my gosh i can't even imagine what it would be like if she did. There is so much partner work with lifting and holding. I think it would be quite interesting to watch her.
Btw, i'm hoping next week we get the Vegas shows where they train the dancers. I love love love this part of the show!
-
I almost always get my fruit at the supermarket. But i guess it depends if you only go to one store or if you check the weekly circulars. There are always fruit and veggies on sale. You just have to see where they are on special!

I am absolutely RELISHING being NOT invested in any more reality TV.
My nights are my own...to watch whatever or listen to whatever I want from a vast (I say VAST) assortment of DVDs and CDs I've YET to watch/hear.
Ahhh...the sheer bliss of it all.
-
Ah, the pirate show...I may watch it if I don't forget.

I wonder. Has May been "depraved in every way" for any of you?
No.
Uh...no.
Not unless eating 2 [two] Levain's cookies counts. :)

The post last night made me blush :)
I wonder if Simon Pegg needs a stand-in...I wonder if stand-in work pays well?
-
By the way, I will pretty much show my petunias to anyone who asks.

TOD:
I used to make a nifty spinach meatloaf roll. You would make up the meatloaf and spread it out in a flat rectangular shape...then spread the spinach and roll the thing up. After it cooked and you would slice it, it would show a pretty green spiral...sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't.
-
I am absolutely RELISHING being NOT invested in any more reality TV.
Maybe it's just me. But i love summer reality tv (well some of it).
Here we have Canadian Idol starting next week.
And Big Brother.
And So You Think You Can Dance.
-
I do try to eat several servings of fruit and veggies each day.
-
Good Noon!
-Well, it's Noon here.
-
I also look forward to BIG BROTHER...my all time favorite "reality" type show...or "game show"...or whatever you want to call it. I call it "fun"!
-
By the way, I will pretty much show my petunias to anyone who asks.
I asked, but you didn't show me. :(
-
Well, they don't travel very well Jose.
-
Fruit is not that expensive. Yes, it costs more than it did a few years ago, but even just two pieces of fruit a day - apples, oranges, pears, bananas, etc. - won't exactly clean out your wallet. Just think of all the apples you could buy for the same price of a five-disc DVD box set?
;)

That is right DR Jose, and grapes are $1 a pound at Safeway this week!
-
And speaking of traveling...
After a few phone calls and some confirmations, I'm all set to head down to Richmond via Amtrak tomorrow morning. And I got to use Amtrak Guest Rewards points too! I'll be staying with Steve tomorrow night, then meet up with my parents at their new house on Saturday.
*And I was going to treat Steve to a belated birthday dinner - he turned the big 5-0 this past Sunday, but it turns out he has a gift certificate to one of our favorite Chinese restaurants, Peking, as well as a dinner certificate to Morton's(!). Hmm... Steak!

The problem with so much supermarker fruit, is that it is supplied by sources that keep breeding and developing fruit based on size, color, and appearance. It is almost always harvested way ahead of time and then gassed or processed to make it appear ripe.
The one element that gets eliminated in all of the above process, is FLAVOR !!
I grow peaches and apricots (yes, here in Arizona), and even though my peaches are about half the physical size of the supermarket varieties, the flavor is so intense and wonderful that it would amaze you.
And so far this season, over 400 pounds of peaches have been harvested from my trees.
-
DR Musicguy, I didn't realize your peaches were so tasty?

I like fruit, I like to cut peaches, strawberries and even bananas up andmix it with yogurt. Rather tasty treat. I do prefer Yoplait.
-
As for the Topic of the Day...
When I cook vegetables at home, I usually do something very simple with them - boil, steam, saute, bake, etc. And even though I have been quite the "regular" cook over the past couple of years, my knife skills are still on the slow side, so the less the chopping and dicing the better. Sometimes there's nothing better than a perfectly baked baked potato. Or a baked sweet potato. Or a roasted bulb of fennel.
I came across and Afghan - I think it was Afghan - dish a few years ago, that's basically comprised of caramelized onions, tomatoes and chick peas. Very easy to prepare and quite delicious. *And for some protein, you can poach an egg in the cooking liquid.
I'm the same with fruits. I prefer to eat them out of hand. If I want a "fancy" fruit tart, I'll order one when I'm out at a restaurant. However, depending what I happen to find at the market, I will occasionally make a crostata with the aid of a store-bought pie crust. Just plop the fruit on top of the pie crust, top with some sugar and cinnamon, dot with a few pats of butter, then bring the pie crust up around the fruit and bake. Yummers!
-
And before I go do a few errands....
Good Morning to dear Esteemed, rested, rehearsed, rice-pudding'd, transposed, and rippling buns-of-steel BK --
And I can't believe that you would throw such a "can of lighter fluid on the fire" to this crowd, as you did in the TOD.....

Back from the webinar. It was an interesting way to deliver professional development content. We had PowerPoint, handouts, audio (via phone), and the capability to ask questions (filling out a form on the web). The coolest thing was the "instant polls" they had built into the presentation - sort of like asking for a show of hands in person, but the results were displayed on the screen as pie charts.
-
I love peaches, hard to find good ones here...
Laura, what kind of bird is taht in the picture?
-
Hmm... I'll have to Google for the particulars later, but there was just a story on the news about some high school graduates who were not given their diplomas due to the fact that their parents and relatives clapped during the graduation ceremony. The school has a "No Clapping" clause. And the students even have to sign a paper stating that they will not clap for their classmates. And, apparently, it applies to their relatives too - who don't sign the paper in advance. However, the students will receive their diplomas after they serve one day of community service.
W-T-F?!?!?!?![/i]

I am amazed that with the likes of Elmore, Jose and especially TCB 'round these here parts that the phrase "what is the most creative thing you've done with vegetables" hasn't been....explored more thoroughly. ;D

"July 5th is the TBA premiere date, pending the offical premiere date announcement from CBS."

Woman Unwittingly Rescues Injured Bobcat
MOBILE, Ala. (May 29) - A woman who helped rescue an injured cat on the roadside got a surprise when a veterinarian told her it was a wild and potentially dangerous bobcat.
Liza Eldred, her teenage daughter and the girl's friend found the female bobcat Saturday on U.S. 98 in south Baldwin County, wrapped it in a sweatshirt and drove it to an animal clinic for treatment.
Veterinarian Andy Duke said the women were "extremely lucky" that the bobcat, which had a broken paw, did not panic and injure them.
They were in "a lot of danger," Duke said.
Eldred believes the bobcat didn't harm them because it sensed they were trying to help.
"It was not moving, making a sound," she said. "It hissed once, so we stopped once so my daughter's friend could move into the (far) back seat."
Duke's staff named the 11-pound bobcat Bobbi. He said it is undersized at 10 to 12 months old, and the animals typically grow to about 35 pounds.

What an interesting morning. Over the weekend I finally found the paperwork from when I'd licensed Spaceship/Naked Space to Germany, and I'd allowed my print to be stored at a lab for ten years with the proviso that I have access to it whenever needed. So, now that we're thinking about issuing it here, I had the decision to either use the transfer on the German DVD, which is really good but non-anamorphic (although I can probably do it anamorphic, but it would result in slight quality loss from what I understand), or just do a new transfer from the print, which is pristine. So, I called the lab and after a little while they found the file. Well, it turns out these lovely people I'd done the deal with never paid their lab bill and then just disappeared, so I'm told the print was auctioned off in 2003. I told them since my name and signature was on the lab access letter, as well as my address, and that I was the licensor, that it would have been nice had they called me. They're now trying to track down who it was sold to (they seemed to know him), and so I may be able to buy it back. If not, I have a friend who can probably find a print for me. It's most annoying, but typical. I did get paid a fair amount of money, so it's not like I wasn't well-compensated for the print, but still, it's not right.
-
By the way, I will pretty much show my petunias to anyone who asks.

I think he's also extremely stupid and inconsiderate: he was asked to not fly to Europe, so he did for his wedding. He was asked to fly back under security conditions, so he flew a commercial flight and may have infected all the passengers. I'm against government control of our lives but I think health security is a whole different issue.
On another health front, I was just informed that Helen Weinberger, my music teacher from grades 10-12, passed away yesterday. She was a wonderful teacher and a dear lady. One of my co-workers just got back from Vegas and he brought me the latest copy of the magazine, What's On. On the back cover of this issue is a full-page ad for the Las Vegas production of THE PRODUCERS, starring Brad Oscar. What is strange about the photo, is that if I didn't already know that Larry Raben was playing the other leading role; I would swear that DR Ben's ever-lovin' Ant had been running off to do the show in Nevada. (I wish I had a scanner so I could show this photo.)
I also noticed that as of sometime in May, Mr. Hasselhoff is no longer part of THE PRODUCERS.

Okay, I'm going to give you dear readers a head's up - I have gone deep into storage and found another cache of Bay Cities boxes. I suspected I had these, but couldn't be sure. I'm giving you dear, dear people first crack at these. I haven't unpacked the boxes yet, and I have to remove them from their blisterpax, which will take a couple of days. I can't let these go cheaply, I'm afraid, and I haven't decided on which of two prices I'm going to charge, but I'll give you dear readers the lower of them, which is $25 plus shipping. Considering this title usually goes for close to $100 or even more (and they don't come up for auction very often - and amazon sellers don't even have one copy), I think it's a bargain. They sold for sixteen bucks new, so it's really not that much more. I have been doing some reading (don't faint Elmore3003) on the plight of Iraqi refugees. I was totally unaware of any of this, but there seem to be over 1 million refugees from that country, people who because of helping American's or being govt workers, have had to leave their homes and country behind as their lives were in danger...and now are living in relocation camps in Syria and Jordan (can you even imagine how horrible that would be to have to put your family through).
The US, who has had a bit of a hand in what is currently happening in Iraq, has so far only let 800 (eight hundred) refugees into our country to resettle. I think that is outrageous and inhuman!
Britain and Germany have not helped much either....the country resettling the most refugees appears to be Sweden, of all places!!

When I got home, I did have some time for some TV-on-DVDs.
I began with the next episode of ANGEL, a kind of filler episode as signs of a coming apocalypse get stronger and stronger. By the time the demon spouted forth from the earth near the end of the episode, it was clear this was actually a two parter.
Additionally, nothing beat the cringe-inducing love scene between Connor and Cordelia.

Thursday, May 31, 2007 3:45 PM
Evening Rush Hour Service:
Beginning at 4 PM the LIRR is anticipating operating its regular evening rush hour service out of Penn Station and Brooklyn; however customers should expect delays of 10-15 minutes and some canceled and combined trains.
We currently have limited service restored west of Jamaica Station between Jamaica Station and Penn Station, as well as between Jamaica Station and Flatbush Avenue while we continue to assess and repair the damage to the signal system from the earlier brush fire west of Jamaica.
NYC Transit is also honoring LIRR tickets at Penn Station, Flatbush Avenue, Jamaica, Woodside, Forest Hills, and Kew Gardens.

Do we invite the Sunnis who are fleeing the Shiites or the Shiites who are fleeing the Sunnis? Maybe a mix of both so they can continue the civil war over here?
I suspect that the refugees are fleeing other Arabs, not the U.S.

Good Afternoon!
Aaaahhhh....
-Notice I did not say, "Whew!" this time. ;)
Just back from a nice walk through the northwest quadrant of Central Park. After having lunch at the Hampton Chutney Co., I headed over to Central Park. Walked around the Reservoir, then made my way through the North Woods. I finally "discovered" Huddlestone Arch, as well as some other Central Park landmarks. I eventually made my way to the top of the Park, and came out at the northwest corner where there are some spiffy new residential towers.
It was a bit on the warm side, and, alas, I could tell that the air was not at its best today - there was a definite brown tinge hanging in below the clouds. But since I wasn't doing anything strenuous, I was OK. And it was a good head-clearing walk.
Aaaahh...

FJL - hasn't arrived yet, but I did get Tomovoz's CD today.
Jose - I said yes prior to hearing the score. I read the script early on, thought it wasn't too hot, but the guy was persistent and really wanted me to do it, and I thought what the hell. In hindsight, I should have said no. The script has amusing things in it - the score is what's really dreadful.

We have an alumni association meeting at four, and I may have one further meeting after that - if the latter doesn't happen, it may happen in the morning.

Nope. Nada. No way. DR MBarnum is a very modest guest. I believe he wore his PJs with the bunny ears under his daily clothing.
Along with his black underwear.

I was thrilled to know they're still publishing The Weekly Reader.

Also, I'm not ever going to be listing Return To Oz in the notes, so only those who peruse the board will know about it. I really cannot say enough about this score - it's brilliant and filled with classic Shire melodies. I wouldn't wait too long either - there aren't unlimited supplies - in fact, one this hits the film music boards tomorrow, it will go really fast - especially because I'm allowing one mail order house to purchase quite a few copies.
-
Forgot to mention that Debra Messing's new miniseries begins tonight - THE STARTER WIFE at 9. It's on one of the cable channels - Lifetime or USA or one of those. I'll have to look at the cable guide to be sure.
I'll give it a try.
Definitely not interested in PIRATE MASTER.
Am only one episode into "More Tales from the City" DVD. I'll likely skip all network TV until "Big Brother".

Well, now that I've stretched and cooled down, it's time for me to wash the dust and pollen off me. The string of dry days has dried out the walking paths in the park - especially around the Reservoir - and there was a lot of dust being kicked up and in the air. I had to shake out some dirt from my shoes in the midst of today's trek.

Do we invite the Sunnis who are fleeing the Shiites or the Shiites who are fleeing the Sunnis? Maybe a mix of both so they can continue the civil war over here?
I suspect that the refugees are fleeing other Arabs, not the U.S.
How many thousand non-English speaking Muslim Arabs would Salem like to welcome? Ask your neighbors - I suspect you'll find the response disheartening.
der Brucer
I did not say that the Iraqi's were fleeing the US...they are fleeing Iraq because their lives are in danger for having helped the US (or other foreign invaders...so to speak)...this is one of the reasons (besides humanitarian reasons) that the US should be at the forefront of helping these displaced people who are languishing in camps with no place to go. Others are govt workers and their families who have been forced to flee due to the insurgants dislike of the new govt and anyone who was or is associated with it.
Some are Muslim, many are Christian...and I imagine with over 1 million of these refugees there are other religions in the mix as well as a smattering of athiests, not that it should matter.
And I am sure there are many in Salem who would not want Iraqi refugees here...but frankly I don't give a darn.

And I was pleased to note that he seems to have done this without any supervision.
But has he stopped moving his lips while he reads?

Libraries that want to receive the new Harry Potter book before its July 21 release date have been required by the publisher to limit the number of staffers who will handle the copies and to provide names and contact info for each branch manager. Apparently, the system for which I work has complied.
My supervisor (and his supervisor also...I think) had to sign a contract, as well...I work in the acquisitions department of the Timberland Regional Library (http://www.trlib.org/). We'll get it that week, be we won't actually release ANY of the copies until Monday, July 23 because no one works here on Saturday and the books wouldn't even be able to get to the branches on Friday. People will get the books when they get them...they better not complain.

I simply don't watch CBS as often as you, it seems.
I've seen no promos of any kind, thus far. But I admittedly haven't watched CBS since the series finale of "Jericho" (or the season finale to "Survivor", whichever came first).
I'm not actually sure if i saw the promos on CBS or on the Canadian channel that carries BIG BROTHER. I just know i've seen many promos.
If a Canadian channel is running the same program CBS is running (at the same time) then we see the Canadian commercials. So that is another reason i am not sure.
I do watch Global a lot (the Canadian channel that BB is on). And i'm trying to think what i watch that is only on CBS. I'm not sure.

FYI:
Huddlestone Arch: C105
[Constructed 1866]
Designer: Calvert Vaux 1824-1895 • England
Architectural Highlights
Dimensions: Width - 22 feet: Height - 10 feet.
Hidden away amidst the quiet country setting
of the Ravine, is one of Central Park’s most
picturesque arches, the Huddlestone.
Beyond its visual appeal, this arch is a
remarkable feat since it was built without
the seal of mortar or metal supports.
Relying on force exerted by gravity and
friction, Huddlestone Arch is constructed entirely
of immense uncut boulders, one weighing
100 tons, which gives Huddlestone its
unique natural appearance and remarkable
sturdiness.
In springtime, one of the attractions of
Huddlestone in Central Park is the yellow
forsythia that hangs over the rock’s
passageway on the arch's south side.
Parallel to the walkway,
is the Loch’s waterway that gently flows
under the arch as it disappears from view
when it meets the jarring structure of the
Lasker Rink on its northern side.

SPECTOR DEFENSE FOCUSES ON MISTAKES IN COLLECTING EVIDENCE (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,276619,00.html)
LOS ANGELES — A coroner testifying in Phil Spector's murder trial acknowledged there were crime lab mistakes in evidence collection and handling including moving Lana Clarkson's body, which ended up compromising evaluation of at least one item at the crime scene.
Dr. Louis Pena also said Wednesday during cross-examination by Spector's defense attorneys that medical findings could not determine who held the gun that fired the bullet that killed the actress.
…
The medical examiner also said criminalists made mistakes in evidence collection and handling, including the loss of a piece of one of Clarkson's teeth.
The missing tooth fragment was among items in an in-house coroner's office memo about concerns in the case.
The memo also said a criminalist used lift-off tape on Clarkson's dress to collect samples of evidence and inadvertently compromised investigators' ability to evaluate blood spatter on the dress.
Pena acknowledged during cross-examination that Clarkson's body was mistakenly moved, causing blood to flow from her mouth, compromising evaluation of her dress for blood spatter.
Gee only Detective Mark Fuhrman is missing!

ANOTHER GUILTY BASTARD BITES THE DUST!
MICHIGAN MAN FINED FOR USING COFFEE SHOP'S WI-FI NETWORK (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,276720,00.html)
A Michigan man has been fined $400 and given 40 hours of community service for accessing an open wireless Internet connection outside a coffee shop.
Under a little known state law against computer hackers, Sam Peterson II, of Cedar Springs, Mich., faced a felony charge after cops found him on March 27 sitting in front of the Re-Union Street Café in Sparta, Mich., surfing the Web from his brand-new laptop.
…
Peterson, a 39-year-old toolmaker, volunteer firefighter and secretary of a bagpipe band, wanted to use his 30-minute lunch hour to check e-mails for his bagpipe group.
He got on the Internet by tapping into the local coffee shop's wireless network, but instead of going inside the shop to use the free Wi-Fi offered to paying customers, he chose to remain in his car and piggyback off the network, which he said didn't require a password.
He used the system on his lunch breaks for more than a week, and then the police showed up.
…
A few weeks later Peterson said he received a letter from the Kent County prosecutor's office saying that he faced a felony charge of fraudulent access to computer networks and that a request had been made for an arrest warrant.
The law, introduced in 1979 to protect Internet and private-network users from hackers, and amended in 2000 to include wireless systems, makes piggybacking off of Wi-Fi networks, even those without a password, illegal.
"It wasn't anything we were looking for, and it wasn't anything that we frankly particularly wanted to get involved in, but it basically fell in our lap and it was a little hard to just look the other way when somebody handed it to us," said Lynn Hopkins, assistant prosecuting attorney for Kent County.
Under the statute, individuals who log on to a Wi-Fi network with the owner's permission, or who see a pop-up screen that says it's a public network, can assume they're authorized to use the network, Hopkins said.
If they don't, they could be subject to prosecution.

For all of you Anthony Warlow fans, I'm watching the new DVD of the Australian Opera production of DIE FLEDERMAUS, which is quite a hoot and very broad. For some reason, the production is set neither in 1874, the year of its premiere, nor in a suburb of Vienna, but in a New York of the 1930s with a lot of Art Deco. This is the first production I've seen in which the Act One Finale was sung complete without the standard musical cut. However, the opening chorus of Act Two has the standard cut so I guess it won't be a complete musical text. A lot of the updating works in a very broad way: Frank the chief of Police is now an Irish cop, Eisenstein a New York rather than Viennese business man, Prince Orlovsky a rich Russian after the Revolution, and Rosalinda in disguise is no longer a Hungarian Countess but a Hungarian movie star.
I have to say, though, with all this 30s additions, I wish they were using the Howard Dietz lyrics and Garson Kanin book which are very New York Broadway. Incidentally, another inducement for prospective purchasers is that DIE FLEDERMAUS had a very successful 500+ performances run on Broadway in 1944 as ROSALINDA, wth Shelly Winters as Adele's sister Ida.

Having not seen the other production, I have no way of knowing how that works. However, the court room scenes in INHERIT THE WIND were written so that audience members could make up the jury. I would think it would be a wonderful experience, with a lot of the speeches delivered directly towards you.

I still remember the apprehension the first time we tried the chute in the Parlor/Barber Shop unit at the Kennedy Center for the Sondheim Celebration Sweeney Todd. When the national tour was there back in the 80s, Angelina Reaux who was playing the Beggar Woman had a horrible accident. -
ummm. . . . . . . . .yes. :-*
I think the reason, DR JRand56, is that it seems out of focus to me.
I finished the FLEDERMAUS; it's really quite good, even if the score sequence is mucked about and I missed an Act Two ballet in the spot where it's supposed to go. Warlow is having a great time. I think of him as a baritone, but Eisenstein's tessitura is high. He's got a vocal range rather like Ron Rainse: I think of him as a bariton but he's got the top. My one reservation was the singer playing Dr Falke, whose voice seems too tenor-y for the part; I'm used to heavy baritones in the role. I liked the actor playing Frosch the jailer, who was right out of The Front Page.
-
I do not like Fed Ex. At all.

To me if you are that thrilled by them then at least them have the chance to try the choreography. You never know what they might do (example the football ballerina guy whe they were gonna cut).

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE COMMENTS (tonight's show):I love this show. But i think i liked last night more. Even though they show a lot of good dancers. They (the judges) sort of bugged me tonight. They applauded for a bunch of dancers and then did not let them do the choreography.
To me if you are that thrilled by them then at least them have the chance to try the choreography. You never know what they might do (example the football ballerina guy whe they were gonna cut).
I cannot wait till next week. I hope they show a lot of them learning choreography. Although my guess is they will probably only do it for the 2 shows next week.
I was happy to see Myles go through to Vegas as well, DR JENNIFER. I guess he is my favorite so far. ;D
-
Although, if you walk into their office and announce that you are a very unhappy customer, they don't waste time finding your package for you.

Ginny,
I found this on Playbill.com
Sixty-three onstage seats are available to theatregoers for each performance. The onstage seats represent spectators at the trial; all seats face the orchestra section of the theatre (the defense and prosecution tables, however, are angled in such a way that the onstage audience doesn't just get back-views of the stars).
If you don't mind sometimes seeing backs, I think it would be fabulous to see this onstage.
-
Is it a actual soundtrack or is it the London Symphony Orchestra studio sessions?
It's the soundtrack recording, which was conducted by Mr. Shire with the LSO.
-
Time for to go to bed.
-
New York City to London....I was with them until Step #21. ;D

click on "get directions" and type in New York City to London

Will we never get to page ten?
Sure we will.
-
Long day tomorrow.
See y'all later

If you were to see only one movie this year, make it this one:
http://www.emanuellevy.com/article.php?articleID=5816
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/diving_bell_and_the_butterfly/
My humble opinion!
-
Sure we will.
But page 14?
That's another story!
-
Just opened one of the Return To Oz's - always worried something this old (1990) won't play, but there it was, issuing forth in gorgeous full-bodied sound, and now I can't shut it off.
-
I think that's "Fatal Retraction" the one with Bill Kroelick the pyromaniac...who "may" make an appearance in season 3,
That would THRILL me to pieces! As I have said many times on this site, that was BY FAR my favorite episode of the first season. Jason O'Mara lights a fire in me just by his very presence. I just wish his series IN JUSTICE was still airing.
-
But page 14?
That's another story!
I don't think there is any reason to worry.
-
Congrats to a very young and lively great-aunt Cilla and Uncle JVHW on the birth of Sophie!! May you both spoil her properly!
-
Page Thirteen Neville Longbottom Dance!!!
-
Michael S's post reminds me that I used to get the lyrics wrong on "The Day After Forever," thinking it started with "long day tomorrow."
How about a "Day After Forever" dance?
All day tomorrow, (or is it Long day tomorrow? :) )
I'll be whispering your name
And the day after forever
I know I'll do the same.
-
I have managed to take most of the week off, but alas, the tree men are done and I have no more excuses. Good thing tomorrow is Friday.
I do need to spend some time at the office catching up on paperwork and have a jail visit to do, but it's really strange to not be getting new cases. I've been wanting it to happen for a long time, but it's the new cases that take up most of the time, so now when I'm at the office, there just isn't much for me to do.
-
I began my evening rewatching an episode from PLANET EARTH to check out the newest capabilities on the PS3 with its firemware upgrade.
I chose "Mountains," one of the most startling in its detail. Very enjoyable to see it again.
-
Thanks to all for the good wishes regarding Sophie.
-
Next, I watched another ANGEL episode, the second part of the story arc featuring the demon who managed to turn almost all of Wolfram and Hart into zombies. I'm sure we haven't seen the last of this villain.
-
bk, I hope everything continues to fall into place for your fundraiser!

About 40 minutes early....but Welcome to June!!!

I don't think there is any reason to worry.
I don't worry!
I'm happy! ;)
-
Congratulations to Great Aunt Cillaliz!
-
Up next was Katharine Hepburn and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. in MORNING GLORY. Amazing that the character of Eva Lovelace would have found the Adolphe Menjou character more appealing than Fairbanks, Jr.'s character.
The transfer had a very sharp picture with good grayscale, but there was plenty of damage to the print they used for this DVD.
-
This weekend we are showing "The Lives of Others" at the Orpheum. I'm looking forward to seeing it

It will soon be bustin' out all over!
-
For next month, we'll have to start with "July, and you'll be sorry" from Pillow Talk
:)
-
My musical-hating DH and DS both laughed and laughed when I showed them that clip.
-
Congrats, Cilla and John
-
Next, I went to the to-watch shelf and picked out SOLDIER, a 1998 Kurt Russell action/sci-fi picture. I got this used for a few dollars because a friend had told me how stupendous Kurt looked in this movie. He sure was right. I can't think of another movie where his body was so chisled - astounding.
As for the film, it's the mind of mindless adventure film that the RAMBO sequels were. Stallone would have fit right into this scenario had he still been a box-office draw in 1998. The last 35 minutes basically was Russell being a one man army against theis elite squad of soldiers who had earlier termed his kind of soldier obsolete.
No surprises at all about what happens, but there was a good cast along with Kurt: Connie Nielsen, Michael Chiklis, Gary Busey, Jason Scott Lee, Jason Isaacs.
-
I ended the evening with a Droopy cartoon, "Out Foxed." The fox being chased by the hounds had a hilarious Ronald Colman accent. The jokes were duds, however.
-
My musical-hating DH and DS both laughed and laughed when I showed them that clip.
Well...it's not often you hear hucka the bejeepers in a Rodgers and Hammerstein song.... ;D
-
I think BK should title tomorrow's notes "June, June, Joan!"
-
I'm restless.
-
I decided to save IF. . . . until tomorrow morning to watch.
The next film in the Hepburn collection set is WITHOUT LOVE, but I may not get to it tomorrow. Certainly I will at some point this weekend.
-
I don't worry!
I'm happy! ;)
That's a great attitude to have!
-
Page Fourteen Harry Potter Dance!!!
-
I'm heading downstairs to bed now.
Good night!
-
Well...it's not often you hear hucka the bejeepers in a Rodgers and Hammerstein song.... ;D
I guess it also was a one time thing too! ;)
I'd like to know what that man calling out her name told her just after the song!
-
Page quatorze?
That's quatorzestrophic!
-
I'm restless.
So was Leslie Uggams! :D
... as well as wordless!
-
She's as restless as a heebie with a jeebers
She's as jumpy as a rebus with a zing
-
The bathroom was tiled today; tomorrow it will be grouted.
-
Then the plumber can come back and put the rest of the bathroom in the bathroom. Currently, it is in the backyard.
-
And the dishwasher is in the driveway.

:(
I just received word that Gil Mead, a longtime supporter of the Arts, especially Theatre, in the DC area and elsewhere has passed. He and his wife, Jaylee, were constant presence at Arena Stage. Not only have they sponsored the annual "big" musical each season for the past couple of years, they also recently gave Arena Stage $35 Million for their new building fund. However, the Meads not only helped out Arena, they have also given their time and money to almost every major and minor theatre in DC.
Gil used to musical direct and conduct shows for various community groups, and the parties at their Watergate condo always ended with a sing-along around the piano. He will be dearly missed. My thoughts are with Jaylee, their children and their many(!) grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

DR DearReaderLaura - Well, I guess it's good that it doesn't rain (that much) in Phoenix. :-\

The Brain Tap! Brain Tap!!
-
Perhaps I can Brain Tap right on to page 15!
-
Welcome eighteen GUESTS.
-
Will we never get to page fifiteen? I'm listening to the marvelous soundtrack to The 5000 Fingers Of Dr. T. I was given 2 CD's worth of stuff, including many cut songs - hard to know if they were all filmed, given the film's brevity, but they're all wonderful.
-
I am listening to Brain from Planet X a lovely gift I got from a fellow dear reader...
Wonderful job Bruce and company!
-
Brain Tap dance to page 15!
-
It is truly excellent!
-
Dakota Celt finally got a Brain!
-
Yes!!! Great stuff... I am sitting here with a HUGE smile!
-
Bruce, you have HIT!!
I really like it!
-
I do have one question... In one of the stills that are in the booklet... is that a wig that Alet has one where her hair is standing straight up?
-
Cason is so Zubrick!
-
Hurray you now have the pleasure of The Brain From Planet X :) now you get to see that all the Bru-ha-ha is true
-
I do have one question... In one of the stills that are in the booklet... is that a wig that Alet has one where her hair is standing straight up?
Yes, Yes it is :)
-
Yep... It is very good and your hardwork paid off...
-
Zubrick as a florist.... LOL
This last track is a hoot!
-
Remember the Brain from Planet X!
-
DR Elmore did an excellent job with the orchestration!
-
I was wondering about Alet's hair. The costumes were great. It is fun to listen..
Like your new avvie Adriana!
-
Studying for my music final tomorrow...
-
You changed your avvie again :)
-
Good luck with your final Adriana... Knock 'em dead!
-
The score really flows beautifully and the lyrics are great fun and one cannot help but smile and tap their toes.
-
In Track 8, was that spanish or japanese?
-
english, russian, and japanese
-
I didn't like the way the new one looked, too stretched
-
I should be going to be but darn this is just too much fun to listen too...
-
ahhh, I see Adrianna..
Spanish, Russian and Japanese... I picked out two but not Russian
-
Shouldn't Ted Neeley be just about the right age for MBarnum?
I think so! But Mr. Neeley isn't the muscle-bound hunk that MBarnum seems to prefer. ::) Ted is tiny. ;)
-
I dont think I will ever be able to watch 1950s sci fi films again in the same way... This is just way too much fun.. Excellent!
-
In all the music listenin' I forgot to mention that DBF and I are going to see SPAMALOT later this summer in St. Paul at the Ordway.
-
I'm now off to the Washington Center for the Performing Arts' annual volunteer appreciation dinner! Free food! But the best part is that they're announcing next season's shows! After that will be rehearsal. Be back later!
I came home from rehearsal and watched "Studio 60" and had to catch up with the posts. Anyway, at the volunteer dinner (sandwiches, salads, apple crisp...and afterwards, we all played Bingo!) they announced the new season for the Washington Center. Nothing's truly official until the brochure is sent out, but it's at the printer and won't be changed at this point. The shows that are coming (that I'm interested in) are the national tours of Ring of Fire, the Johnny Cash musical; Peter Pan; Gypsy; 1984, directed by Tim Robbins; and the Carl Rosa production of H.M.S. Pinafore! There's a lot more to their season, but those are all the big shows!
-
H.MS Pinafore and Gypsy sounds good
-
Peter Pan is always fun :)
-
Who is in the tour of Gypsy ( for Mama Rose?)
-
Big thumbs down for Ring Of Fire, for reasons elmore knows.
-
Not a huge fan of Johnny Cash so I will pass on Ring of Fire.
Peter Pan would be fun.
-
I am hoping there will be a touring company of THE BRAIN! Now that would be fun!
-
Peter Pan is always fun :)
Not always! Someday, I'll have to tell you about the production that I was in. ::)
;D
-
Who is in the tour of Gypsy ( for Mama Rose?)
I don't know...I don't think that they know. We just got the titles of the shows. :-\
-
Big thumbs down for Ring Of Fire, for reasons elmore knows.
That's not what they said. When they announced it, they mentioned something about "award winning" show. ::)
-
I am only familiar with a taped performance of Peter Pan that had Mary martin
-
Here's her senior high school picture.
2 Good 2 B 4 Gotten.
I thought she was a natural redhead! :o
-
The movie Neverland harkens to the journey in creating Peter Pan
-
I am only familiar with a taped performance of Peter Pan that had Mary martin
I'm wondering if it's based on the Cathy Rigby production...the flying is much more exciting!
-
I thought she was laso GEorge
-
Remember the Brain from Planet X!
...and the Golden Rule!
;D
(read that all again with Robert Preston's voice in your head ;))
-
I forgot she had one version also
-
HEE HEE HEE
-
I am only familiar with a taped performance of Peter Pan that had Mary martin
Cathy Rigby's version is also available on DVD...and they digitally removed the wires.
-
now i have it in me head and the brain is talking....
-
Cathy Rigby's version is also available on DVD...and they digitally removed the wires.
To make it appear taht she was actually flying.
-
digitalization can be nice in some instances but a nuisance in other instances
-
digitalization can be nice in some instances but a nuisance in other instances
I thought it was very well done.
-
An award-winning show, huh? That must be why it closed in less than a month. It might have won an award in Buffalo - what else would they give an award to? We can only wish that the producer of the show, who must have lost his investors quite a lot of money, continues to get the karma he so richly deserves.
