For those who've ordered the Return To Oz CD, please do your paypal payments soon - it gets very hard to keep up with and I need to print out the order pages and get everything ready for shipping.  And for those who are thinking about it - don't think too long.

Good morning, all! This morning I will return to Toyland to continue packing up of the office, leaving out the essentials I'm working on.  we're operating on the assumption that we will be relocating before too long and preparing for the eventuality.  After that, the NYPL for a while.

At 5:30, bruce mcclung is getting the Theatre Library Association book award for his study of LADY IN THE DARK, and I'd like to attend.  I haven't seen bruce in several years and I'm very happy for him.

I just picked up No One is Alone yesterday. It was on sale at Virgin. I also finally got the new Broadway cast recording of Grey Gardens. All I was able to find in the stores was the Off-Broadway recording which I already have. The two packages look almost identical except. It does say Broadway Cast Recording on the sleeve of the new one but it's not enough of a difference. I knew for sure because Sara Gettelfinger did the Playwrights Horizons production but not the Broadway production. Her name is on the Off-Broadway recording but not the Broadway recording.

Good Morning!

Well, I allowed myself to just lie in bed this morning and listen to WQXR for a bit, but once 8:00 came along, I've been puttering about every since.

I just did a quick scan of the posts, and thanks for all the Travel Vibes.  They are much appreciated.  My train leaves at 10:30, so, I will be heading down to Penn Station shortly.  And then I'll be incommunicado for the next six to seven hours, so...  Call me errant and truant and hit me with the bitch-slap machine, but it just can't be helped.  ;)

OK... I have one last bit of packing to take care of...

I love his songs, but don't think I've ever heard any of his purely instrumental music.

It's a glorious piece, about 12 minutes long, based on Nursery Songs. I recognize "Boys and Girls, Come Out to Play," "A Frog He Would A-Courting Go," "Oranges and Lemons," and "Over the Hills and Far Away."  It's very much like Quilter's arrangements of old songs like "Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes," and beautifully scored and written.

Hmm...

Just reading today's NY Times, and there's a review of The Puppini Sisters    (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/31/arts/music/31pupp.html?_r=1&ref=music&oref=slogin) current NYC engagment.  Some DRs may wish to check out the review.  Or not.

Based on a listening to their newly released CD, I'm inclined to agree with what this review says of the group.  I find their singing pretty much on the flat side.  They lack the--i don't know--texture?--that other three part harmony groups like the Andrews Sisters, the Maguire Sisters, Manhattan Transfer and the Roches ably demonstrate.  Once the novelty wears off, it gets a little tedious.

HOLLYWOOD OR BUST was their last film together. I'm sure I saw it at the time of its release but never since. Since this boxed set isn't very expensive, I'm very tempted to get it just to relive some of these memories. Alas, there are other things that I want, so I will probably wait.

I noticed that Universal lowered the prices on many of their Abbott and Costello, Franics, and Ma and Pa Kettle boxes over the last few months.

Of course,m Paramount is not Universal, so who knows if the price will ever come down?

I spent this morning revisiting Lindsay Anderson's terrific film IF. . . .

I hadn't seen it since watching a double feature with it and O LUCKY MAN at a revival theater here in town (long since closed) in 1980.

What a powerful film, and I got chills all over again seeing Malcolm McDowell in his first really big movie role. What a striking impression he must have made at the time. Easy to see why Kubrick wanted him for A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. That wildness in his eyes is unmistakable.

The recording's been available a week early at psclassics.com (http://psclassics.com/cd_110intheshade.html) (though it's a dollar cheaper at Amazon.)

I have never forgiven Michelle Pawky for appearing in that other Reefer Madness musical.   ;D

You guys probably talked about this yesterday after I left, but I literally LOL'd twice listening to the news reports about the TB guy--first, finding out he's a P.I. attorney (experience that will no doubt come in handy with his upcoming multi-million dollar lawsuits--as a defendant), and that his father-in-law works for CDC as a TB expert.

Our company begins its summer hours program today.  Employees in Group A get to leave at 12:30 today, Group B leave early next Friday, and so on and so on until after Labor Day.

I am in Group B so I have to wait a week, but the good part is that so many people are missing for the rest of the afternoon that one can do not much more than goof off.

Yo, Gang!

Well, where the HELL have i been??

Just got home last night from The Cabin... tonight begins yet-another (last until October...) mrathon weekend for my Master's Degree. I managed to complete a 17-page paper for tonight - one more to go before I leave for incarceration.

Then, make-up's for missed classes on Monday and Tuesday nights - those papers will be dashed off right before class...

PLUS - I'm doing ANOTHER Art As Lifework, Life As Artwork series beginning June 10/17/24 in Eagle Rock (info at www.blissfulsoul.com), before heading back up to the Cabin, for serious repairs - whatta winter I had up there - floods, leaks, plumbing disaster, electrical disasters, fallen trees (yes, one took out my tool shed...), all sandwiched between concurrent efforts at an MA and BA.

And I finally started vocalizing (In the car, actually, during long drives...) for this gig I have in mid-July in Seattle. Oy! Keeps me youn. I guess.

And how are YOU?

Paypal has finally put a placeholder on the site - they say they're doing weekly maintenence which is, of course, horse manure.  They don't do that in prime time, they do it week in and week out for two hours at midnight on a weeknight.  They say the site will be back up and running at eleven-thirty, which is fifteen minutes from now.

So, if you haven't been able to make your Return To Oz payments, you'll be able to then.

Okay, I spoke to the first obnoxious and ill-informed paypal person ever - normally they have the best customer service, but this was some idiot who'd obviously been handed a script to read, and that never sits well with me.  She told me of the problems and that they were working on it, but then told me if I was getting an error message saying it wasn't recognizing my password, that I was logging in incorrectly.  Oh?  Not possible, since my password is SAVED and appears automatically and has worked for years that way.  She had me log on, and I guess at that moment they fixed it because I finally got into my account, where I was dismayed to see that no payments after midnight last night had arrived.  So, once again, if you ordered Oz and haven't been able to do the paypal payment, you should be able to now.

I began my afternoon viewing with the next episode in THE CLOSET second season set: one of my favorites of the past season. This was the one where Lts. Provinza and Flynn find a body in Provinza's garage, but since they have skybox tickets to see the LA Dodgers play, they postpone calling it in. Of course, the body is gone the next time they look for it.

Very elaborate investigation, and a number of satisfying conclusions.

I don't know which episode Kyra will submit for her Emmy nomination, but she'd be hard pressed to find a better one than this.

Next, I watched THE STARTER WIFE. It's more a melodramatic comedy like DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES than the usual comedy.

Frankly, I didn't find much of it amusing. I was disgusted with the waste of the great Judy Davis, and the blackmailing Russian nanny was such a tired plot. Ditto the unattractive husband diddling with a barely 20 year old girl modeled on Brittany Spears.

It was a long two hours though Messing was OK.

I finished the afternoon with a LAW & ORDER episode on TNT-HD, one of the few episodes where Jack McCoy showed more of his heart than a willingness for justice. I can only remember one other case where he chose to show real mercy to someone on trial rather than go for some kind of conviction.

TOD:

Books: What to Drink With What You Eat, by Andrew Dornenberg and Karen Page.  Basically a book of lists, pairing different types of foods with different wines and other quaffables.  Unfortunately, D&P proclaim that it is "The most important book you will read this year," which is so egotistically over the top as to make the rest of the book dismissable.

DVD: Terry Gilliam's Brazil.  Bizarre film, I must say.

Marty, our big black Lab mix, hasn't been feeling well.

We're not sure what's wrong.  He's just acting tired, and wheezing some.

He isn't a young pup, of course.  He's been with us for over ten years.  And he's always had a heart murmur.  The original vet who saw him said Marty'd be lucky to see his fifth birthday.

We'll be taking him to the vet this evening.

THERE are fairies at the bottom of our garden!
    It's not so very, very far away;
You pass the gardner's shed and you just keep straight ahead --
I do so hope they've really come to stay.
There's a little wood, with moss in it and beetles,
    And a little stream that quietly runs through;
You wouldn't think they'd dare to come merrymaking there--
          Well, they do.

There are fairies at the bottom of our garden!
    They often have a dance on summer nights;
The butterflies and bees make a lovely little breeze,
And the rabbits stand about and hold the lights.
Did you know that they could sit upon the moonbeams
And pick a little star to make a fan,
And dance away up there in the middle of the air?
          Well, they can.

There are fairies at the bottom of our garden!
    You cannot think how beautiful they are;
They all stand up and sing when the Fairy Queen and King
Come gently floating down upon their car.
The King is very proud and very handsome;
The Queen--now you can quess who that could be
(She's a little girl all day, but at night she steals away)?
          Well -- it's Me!

I do have many photos of the last few days. They are in my other computer, but I will post some later.  I pruned the rose bush yesterday then I used the paste stuff to hang the border.  I don't know if I reacted to the rose scratches - well I know I did, or if I reacted to the chemicals getting in the scratches but I was feeling pretty lousy last night, so I just went to bed.  I'm much better this morning and the welts on my arm have gone away

I'm sitting here trying to think what I have done to deserve such wonderful friends.  Last year when I was sick, the flowes that were sent and now all this kindess with my Mom gone.

I feel so humbled and so very, very blessed.   :-* :'(

Well, DR Danise, this is the best site in the universe!  How's your week gone?

My wonderful sibling Randy and his great wife JoAnn have finally cleaned out our dad's RV to put it on the market.  Randy would clean it out for 30 minutes at a time, break down in tears, and have to take a long break.  We still have the house to empty and I think we should hire a crew to do it.

I'm back from the Theatre Library Awards.  The presenters were fascinating and the books all sound quite interesting.  My friend bruce signed my book and I got to visit with Carolyn Weber from the Kurt Weill Foundation. I'll post the five winners in a bit.

Hi DR Elmore!

I understand about cleaning and crying.  I did a lot of it this week and have much more to do.

I'm trying to find a picture that I can post of Mom's star but no luck so far.  I want to take a picture of it but so far every time I try the flash goes off and it shines in the glass so you can't see the map.

I will have to wait for a sunny day and try it with out the flash.  Right now, it's dark and rainy so I'm not having any luck with light from the lamp.

Elmore, when my Mom died and we had to clean out the 4000 + SF home she had lived in with my Dad for 35 odd years, stuffed to the gills with stuff and more stuff, we just were ruthless--we got a dumpster and just ripped through the house, bagging up stuff to donate and throwing everything else away.  If you do it quickly, it's not so bad.

Back from rehearsal - I now know at least everything perfunctorily.  This composer will do two verses exactly the same - all the words fit on the notes, then suddenly in the next verse he'll leave out the pickup note and word, and it's just maddening and I HATE HIM!

I've had the vinyl album for about 15 years.  Just sitting there and watching it, it was a little too repetitive (musically) for my taste.  I also watched it late at night after a longish day, so I was a bit tired. ::) So, it didn't hold my interest all the way through.  I watched all of the first act but had to turn it off about half way through the second act.  I'll finish it sometime soon.  But I'm glad I got it. :)

Black tie & tails?
Black tail and green leash.

As der Brucer had anticipated, Marty's heart murmur is kicking in and slowing down his heart's effectivness.  He's got a buildup of fluids in his abdomen, so we'll be taking him back to the vets early tomorrow so he can have the fluids drained.  That and he's got a regimen of meds to take twice a day, and we're switching him from a kibble diet to one of ground meat (beef or lamb) and rice.  (I'm now a doggy chef!)

In any case, Marty's days are numbered.  He's not ready to say goodbye yet, nor are we.  But we know it's coming.

Right now, der B is watching over him as he has his dinner, making sure the other pups don't try to help themselves.

This is sudden.  Marty has only been acting "funny" for the last two or three days.  I'd like to see him last through the summer - but I'm not sure why, if not simply because I need the time to get used to the idea of his not being with us much longer.

He's a good companion, both to der Brucer and me and to the other pups.

I need to stop writing now.

As for the Friday Media Check...

DVD: "Match Point"

CD - via my iPod:
The Puppini Sisters - "Betcha Bottom Dollar"
Michael Bublé - "Call Me Irresponsible" - There are some amazing horn charts on this album.  The second track, "It Had Better Be Tonight (Meglio Stasera)" sizzles!
Lang Lang - Beethoven Piano Concertos No. 1 and 4
Barbabra Cook - "No One Is Alone" - I'm trying to think... Is this the first original post-Wally Harper album that Ms. Cook has done? Just curious.
Jessica Molaskey - "Sitting in Limbo" - I think the "The Circle Game/Waters of March" track is my favorite.  So far.  With the reimagining of Billy Joel's "Summer Highland Falls" a very close second.

And that's about all I had time to listen to on the train ride from New York's Penn Station to Richmond's Main Street Station.  ;)

At 8, TCM showed a mystery I've never seen before: GRAND STATION MYSTERY with a terrific cast including such MGM stalwarts as Van Heflin, Connie Gilchrist, Sam Levene, Tom Conway, Frank Ferguson, Cecilia Parker, and Virginia Grey.

I did figure out who committed the crime about halfway through the film, but not the method of murder. That was a surprise.

And throughout the film, I kept thinking that Heflin and Grey's parts could easily have been played by William Powell and Myrna Loy, and this could have been another THIN MAN mystery.

As for the train ride down, it was very pleasant if just a tad too long.  The car I got on turned out to have a group of high school junior and senior boys from Boston, who were heading down to DC for an end of the school-year trip.  Needless to say, they were a little rowdy, but since the train was full, I just took the first free seat I came across.  Thankfully, their teacher/chaperone kept them in order and under control during the trip from NYC to DC.  Most of them had iPods and Gameboys and Nintendos anyway.  Or they were making frequent trips to the Cafe Car.  In fact, their teacher turned out to be the "noisy one", since, like clockwork, she would yell out - in a wonderful Boston Back Bay accent! - "Get back in your seats!" "Don't block the aisles!" "Are you guys behaving!"...  And then when she discovered the very cute baby who boarded - with her mother - at Philadelphia...."OH!  Aren't you the cutest!" "Yeah! Look at your pretty Mommy!" "I just want to take you home with me!" etc., etc., etc.

At least it was entertaining.  And I had my iPod and headphones too. ;)

The "funniest" part of the trip was the trek from Richmond's Staples Mills Station to the recently opened Richmond's Main Street Station.  On the map, it's just about six miles from point to point.  But due to track work, and speed controls due to residential areas, the trip took about 20 minutes on the train.

But I'm here.

Seeing Tommy Tune standing next to Kristin Chenoweth at the Drama Desk awards just made me smile...   :)

I remember getting into an elevator at Ripley-Grier one time with Tommy Tune and Larry Fuller.  The tallest choreographer in the business, and one of the shortest one.  *I think Baayork Lee is the shortest.  :)  Love ya, Connie Wong!

But before I go, does anyone know if there are demo CDs of Legally Blonde and/or Pirate Queen floating around? I am trying to find some clips from said shows. Neither Web site has the usual practice of including a song clip or two.

DR Ben - I have the demos for Legally Blonde, as well as a pit-mix dub too.  Sssshhh.  As for The Pirate Queen, I think someone gave me those too at one point and time, but I don't know where I put them.  However, I know someone who has a raw copy of the soon-to-be-released OCR, so... Ssshhh...

And did anyone else see the "Omigod You Guys" the other morning - yesterday(?) - on "The View"?  Frankly, I don't think the presentation showed the show in the best possible light.  It was fun, but kind of lacking.  *And the canned orchestra... Ugh.   -I mean, Audra had live players!  ;)

That is so sweet; thank you, DR Jose.

Truth to tell, there aren't any releases that I want that I haven't already gotten. I haven't put any on the back burner because Amazon gave early Blu-ray buyers a 10% discount on all Blu-ray discs through December 2007, so I've been taking advantage of that discount since Christmas.

But if three do get released soon that I don't know about, I'll be sure to give you a holler!

Thanks!

OH!

After Steve picked me up at the train station, we headed on over to Peking for some dinner.  We took a chance with one of tonight's specials: Chicken Breast Stir-Fried with Honeydew, Cantaloupe and Strawberry.  It smelled like dessert when it came to the table, but it tasted heavenly.  And the heat from the stir-frying brought out the flavor and sweetness in the fruit.  I remember seeing Alton Brown make a similar dish, but I believe this was an adaptation of a Martin Yan recipe.  In any case, it was delicious!

And, best of all, the dinner was "free" since Steve was given a gift card for Peking from his condo's owners association... since he had put out a fire on the roof of his building this past Monday.  :o  -But that's a story for another day.

Well, now I'm trying to work out the rest of my weekend here in Richmond.  My parents will be at their new place down here sometime tomorrow, and I do plan to finally get over there and check out the new digs.  -Plus, there are a few stray boxes there I need to go through too.  :-\  However, I still have yet to take care of my car's inspection - remember that? - so...  Steve has no real plans for this weekend, so he'll drive me over there in the afternoon, and then... well, I may just have to play this weekend by ear.  However, I'm all set to bring my car into my mechanic on Monday, and, hopefully - once I find the title (thus the stray boxes) - it will be sold/given-away/dumped before I head back up to NYC on Wednesday morning.  :)

What a week. I have been ill for the last 12 days or so. A  cold that turned into some kind of sinus infection or something. Whatever happened to the 3-day colds I grew up with?

Anyways, yesterday I went up to the old place for it was time for TPunk and I to put a little friend out of his misery. Our boy Walty had lost the ability to really digest food and pass it through his system and the vet had said there was pretty much nothing else left to do. He had spent the last few days hunched over or hiding inside a box springs, so TPunk made the call.

It was an extremely hard thing to do, but it was the right thing to do, and this was affirmed by the expression of total peace that came over him at the end. I will never forget it as it put me at ease.

Some of you who had been by had met Walty and might remember he was unusually friendly and responsive for a cat. Others here may remember when we got him and the wild days when we were not sure if he and Killbot would co-exist. They did. For a couple fun years. Now the question is how K-bot will do without her partner in crime.

And thanks Jose. By the way Jose, I was able to restore myself to my home IM capability. For those curious, Jose, when visiting at some point, logged on to IM at the apt, maybe months ago. I never really used IM, so knew nothing about it, but when I tried to log in a few days back, I came up as Jose and realized I could send instant messages as Jose. I threatened to destroy his reputation, but he wisely replied he no longer had such a thing. In any case, I have regained IM control of my own identity now.

Seems Marty heard about the creatures at the bottom of the garden - after a frantic 30 minutes search for him, he was found curled up in dirt hole underneath the backyard steps.

The cakes for the litter-box cake have been baked and are cooling.

Magic Mommy spoke with me a few hours ago; she wanted to know what we were giving William for his birthday. Seems she still hasn't decided what to give him - shucks, why worry, she has 16 hours before he starts opening presents!
