Well, you've read the notes, the notes certainly had that lickety split feeling, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're looking for their lickety, which split.
-
And the word of the day is: PREVISE!
-
And a very happy haineshisway.com birthday to Bevan, whomever he is.
-
I guess the word of the day is applied to previews of those revisal musicals.
-
Dinner time. Back later - much later. Goodnight all.
-
My "ask bk" question from last week didn't get answered, so I'm re-posting:
We know that you often commission or create charts especially for your recordings. But what happens if you want to do a CD of many different songs, from different musicals, with the original orchestrations. Do you rent the full orchestral parts for each show? And do you then get the entire set of parts for each show for each song represented on the recording? THAT would be a mountain of material! Or do you get sent just the songs you need from each show? It seems like that would be very daunting. :)
-
WOD: DR JRand56's specialty :)
-
A couple of weeks ago, I had a (somewhat long and involved) question about the score to "The Creature Wasn't Nice," but I can't remember what it was all about...I hate it when that happens. :P
So, I'll try to remember what it was, but if I don't...oh, well. :-\

Interestingly, unless I've done a cast album, I have never used an original orchestration from a show - I always had/have new charts done, usually to a routine that I've done. However, I think the only exception to that was when we recorded Waiting, cut from The King And I, and My Best Love cut from Flower Drum Song - for those we had the original Robert Russell Bennett orchestrations.
-
It's time for me to get to bed. Good night, BK.
-
For Ask BK Day: Maybe I missed your answer when I've asked before, but is Guy Haines making an appearance at the November benefit?
-
The Party Animals look like a lot of fun, and the kids are having a blast in the video!
I didn't see the "other" video...

Well, I'm going back to bed but before I do I must commend DR Cillaliz for fighting for the building. You go, girl! You will soon be a fixture on the local news!
If you do want to send a copy of the weather video, I can put up a link that only HHWers would know about.

Good morning DR Ben.
Good morning (you should still be asleep) DR TCB
Asleep? I will be leaving for work in a half hour.
-
Good morning, Tom. Good morning, Ben. Good morning, oatmeal bowl.
-
I'm all alone in the jernt, at least right now. I may have company by the time I finish.
I saw Xanadu last night. It brings up a whole host of questions, like Xana Why??? and other exclamation like Xana Don't!!!
Wow, what a misfire. There are one or two very funny lines but the movie was such an unrelenting dog (IMHO) that I just don't understand why they thought that gentle mocking or spoofing would work in turning this into a musical. It still needs HUGE, HUGE amounts of work and I don't think previews will fix the problems. I usually love Douglas Carter Beane's work but this book is awful, with the exception of a few funny lines (as I mentioned earlier). The show isn't even deliciously bad. That would be fun but it's just bad. Tony Roberts and Mary Testa (two old pros) work mightily coming off well with very weak material but the more I see Kerry Butler, the less I like her. She was good in Hairspray and Bat Boy when she was playing kind of smarmy characters but when I saw her in Little Shop and now this I just think she's missing something. There has to be a likeability about Clio/Kyra (and Audrey in Little Shop) but that was missing from Miss Butler's performance. There are also audio problems. Even with a mike I had trobule hearing/understanding her. James Carpinello who was in Saturday Night Fever, plays the Michael Beck role. He's a little better than Butler, but not by much. He's not sexy or hot and he's a decent singer but nothing special.
The audience last night LOVED the show but unless they tap into that cult group the show will not last long, IMHO. I don't think Brantley or Isherwood will like the show (the two main critics for the NY Times).
SPOILER
The funniest line in the show (I don't think I'm giving anything away) is
This is like Children's Theatre for 40 year old gay men.
It was downhill after that.
-
Good morning and good night.
The oatmeal bowl calls.
Later!
-
and it's bedtime in OZ.
-
Ben, you and I are going to have to push this sucker to page two; or I will never be able to look an oatmeal bowl in the face again!
-
I love the Birthday CD. Maybe Tomovoz should market a specialty CD for birthdays, featuring the songs that were popular every year (or every other year) on your birthday. Hmm, maybe that is a good idea for my sister's 60th this month.
-
I'm back. The bowl is clean and we are now at 24. Only 6 more to Page 2. Where is Singdaw when you need him?
-
No Jrand56. No slingblade. No Michael Shayne.
-
Where is Elmore when you need him?
-
Tom has gone to bed but I can't be cause it's 8:01am NYC time and I have a desk full of work to finish.
-
The early morning denizens are dropping like flies. Perhaps they were in the audience of Xanadu last night and could not face getting out of bed this morning.
-
Oh, yes. If Xanadu is still running while you're here and you really want to see the show, you can get seats on stage! It seems to be the newest trend. Spring Awakening, Inherit the Wind and Xanadog (sorry Xanadu)
-
Come on, Ben, we can do it.
Whew!

Whew!!!
It's hard when you get the "Your last post was less than 10 seconds. Please try again." It interrupts my frenzy.
-
Ahh, speak of the devils, Singdaw and FJL but they are probably catching up from last night so they won't be in this part for a while.
-
I hate it when that happens.
-
On that note (Post 35) I shall leave for a while.

Whew!!!

I have never gotten that message.

Slingblade! Freddie!
-
IIRC, DRs FJL and JoseSPiano enjoyed Xanadu somewhat more than DR Ben.
DR Ben, thanks for posting your thoughts!

I am neither short, nor pissy. However, I do type slowly.

The sound is there but the video is really, really strange. I tried on different browsers so it must be something on their end.
I'll try again later.
I even went to the home page and started viewing from there. It didn't make any difference in video quality

Wednesday morning greetings! My drive to work was accompanied by the first 12 tracks of the Curtains OBCR and, so far, I like what I've heard. Can hardly wait to see it on June 30!

DR Cillaliz, very cool--both on seeing you on TV and for speaking up for a worthy cause.
-
Good morning, all! I have not been sleeping well, and I slept in this morning.
DR FJL, the broom handle, or rolled-up towel or whatever, was for the patient to bite down on during intense pain caused by an amputation, bullet removal or whatever surgery was performed without benefit of drugs, say any time between 1000 BC to the 19th Century, perhaps even later.
I've known the playwright of the new XANADU since around 1985 when we worked at The Drama Book Shop; he was a funny raconteur but not a particularly good book store clerk. He was fun but a bit shallow and it's my observation that his success has made him even shallower. My last memory of seeing him was at intermission of his play THE COUNTRY CLUB. I have no urge to see XANADU, but I did like THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED quite a lot.
Today, I believe it's another NYPL afternoon with the Historic American Newspapers. There's also a BABES IN TOYLAND article I need to find in the 1903 scrapbooks and copy.
-
There is a rising fight going on now in Camden, NJ to save the ages old Sears department store building on Admiral Wilson Blvd. Campbell Soups wants to build a new industrial park but one of their stipulations (demands) is that they can raze the building.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v130/WandaDuck/20070517_inq_jsears15-a.jpg)
Sears was a regular shopping destination when I was a youngen. My father got a discount there from his place of work. The front of the store had a huge red neon sign that was visible miles away from my parent's upstairs bedroom window.
But to be honest, I think it's time for this building to go. I don't think it's particularly attractive in any way. It's been occupied unsuccessfully a number of tenants over the years. There are times when you just have to let go.
-
Michael S.: He is doing a staged reading of a musical.
Has the name and other info (writers, directors etc) been given out?
-
Oh, and DR DearReaderLaura, sorry to hear about the bathroom vanity. Hope everything works out OK and without too much extra expense.
Thanks. It's ok. We were just so looking forward to having it all finished. I returned the first vanity without a problem and got another one. The problem was that the drawers were too wide on the first one and wouldn't fit around the wastewater exit pipe.
-
It's a beautiful building, Cillaliz. Good for you.
As you know, we don't like old buildings out here in Phoenix. Tear 'em all down and build a stucco strip mall. That's our motto.
-

That's beautiful Ginny. Hope you can save it. The Williges building isn't the most beautiful in town, but Sioux City has some wonderful architecture and many buildings have been torn down over the past 20 years or so. It's now to the point where we really can't afford to lose another one.
-
Thanks for the positive comments. I'm really irritated at the bank. It's not even a matter of needing parking spaces, there are plenty here, and after they tear down the building and the parking garage next door, there will be fewer spaces than they have now....as soon as my last direct deposit is in the bank the beginning of July, I'm switching banks.
-
This computer isn't letting me get the video. I'll have to try again later on another computer.
Congrats, Cilla, on standing up for what you believe in.
Thanks. I used to do it all the time before I started working for the feds and had to worry about the Hatch Act and other such nonsense intended to keep people quiet. Now that I'm going back on my own...watch out!
-
Good morning!
This may be the last of our cool mornings. I anticipate possibly having to turn on the A/C tonight or tomorrow. High 80s today and into the 90s tomorrow, so I guess the A/C will be necessary at some point.
-
I recorded a William Haines comedy from the gay film festival on TCM the other night, but I believe I have seen it before, so I may only watch a few minutes before deleting.
I have the last 20 minutes or so of FROM THE TERRACE to watch today.
And, of course, lots of CLOSER and ANGELS episodes.
-
And just as a reminder, tonight is more of the gay film festival on TCM. SIGN OF THE CROSS is being shown tonight at 8. I've forgotten the other films on but will consult my cable guide when I go downstairs later.
-
I watched the Kathy Griffin comedy special last night, but since I was watching THE SHIELD's season finale, I had to record LIFE ON THE 'D' LIST. I'll watch that today, too.
-
Good morning all DRs and H/Ks.....
I feel a lot of empathy for dear DR Elmo; I slept in fitful 2 or 3 hour segments last night, due to a very nagging and intense headache at the rear base of my skull. Very nasty indeed! Neither an ice pack nor a hot shower would make it lighten up....all I could say was, hO parC !! (out of defference to DR Laura).
-
Good morning dear (hopefully) well rested Esteemed and revitalized BK --
As for the TOD .....
I may have missed it over the past few days, but I too have been curious about a title and a synopsis of the current staged reading in which you are using your very own Ye Olde Voice-box. I'm assuming that because it has an audience in attendance, it isn't something being kept under wraps......
-
Hi DR Ben,.... Hi DR Fred..... WARNING WILL ROBINSON !! ..... it's getting closer to the time that I get to be in your lovely Apple , so Huzzah!!
-
Hi DR Matt ...... I had seen a promo for the gay fim presentation on TCM, but I had gotten the impression that it was a big "all in a row" festival type thing. It makes it a lot harder to record it, when it is spread out over time.... Poo !!
-
VIBES TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVEN'T BEEN SLEEPING WELL!!
-
Yes, MG, we are looking forward to your visit. We haven't seen you for a couple of years at least, when you dropped by while doing "organ" work (paging TCB & Elmore) and we went out to dinner at Dish in the Gayborhood.
-
MUSIC GUY, I don't think BK's mentioned the name of the show. But I'm still trying to catch up from two weeks of being E&T, so what do I know?
-
I concur with EDISAURUS on I <HEART> HUCKABEES. That film just didn't work for me.
-
And the word of the day is: PREVISE!
When the new district manager, who had dreams of running the company someday, came to me and asked what I might PREVISE, I told him "You should never strive to be more than a VEEP, SIR."
-
Hi DR Matt ...... I had seen a promo for the gay fim presentation on TCM, but I had gotten the impression that it was a big "all in a row" festival type thing. It makes it a lot harder to record it, when it is spread out over time.... Poo !!
They do about five films a night back-to-back, two days a week. Yes, I guess if you're using only a VCR, you have to pick and choose. And, really, some of the films have only a moment or two of suggestive gay material (like the scene with the wardrobe mistress and her gay assistant in THE BROADWAY MELODY. That only lasts seconds. He's in one other scene as I recall, and that's it.)
So, I've found myself picking and choosing even though I could record them all.
-
Hi dear Ben, you pixie-vixen you!! I still have very fond memories of that very wonderful dinner with you and Ant, and also visiting you at your apartment. I hope we can get together again this upcoming trip... and maybe work out something also with Elmo, and I hope to meet Fred and Skip. To say nothing of that exotic temptress of pianistic talent, dear Jose. I have to have Jose to blame everything on..... then he can be dealt with !!
I look forward to dinners, walks, pie, cookies, etc. :)

Tomorrow is the Hartford Express for a colleague and me. I re-worked the presentation and the group to whom we are presenting seem happy with it.
Now comes the difficulty. I just assumed because we were going to Hartford, CT that we would take Metro North to the Hartford station. Nooooo! Metro North doesn't go to Hartford. Oh, well. We will take the MetroLiner Northeast Corridor train. Noooo! That train goes from Boston to DC but it doesn't make a stop in Hartford. There are two ways, besides driving, to get to Hartford. One Amtrak train leaves NY Penn Station at 6:55am. We have to change trains in New Haven and then, if all trains are on schedule we arrive in Hartford at 9:20 - for a 9:30 presentation. Ain't gonna happen. The other travel option is the Peter Pan bus from Port Authority at 42nd Street. One bus a day leaves at 6am and arrives in Hartford (if traffic is good) at 9am. Ye gods! Who knew getting to Hartford would be so difficult. Luckily my colleague lives in New Jersey and has a car. We will be driving from Manhattan, leaving at 6:15am. That should get us to Hartford in plenty of time for the presentation. We will then return to NY/NJ at a leisurely place since the meeting is over at 11:30. We will not have to worry about rush hour traffic. At least my boss said I don't have to come back to the office no matter what time I get back to the city. She said "you've already put in the equivalent of a full day so just go home when you get back." Thank you!!!
Singdaw, I don't think we will hook up this time but I look forward to seeing you sometime during the invasion of Hansie's/Kimmlets at the end of the month.

VIBES TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVEN'T BEEN SLEEPING WELL!!
I think I got these vibes in previse, DR Jeanne - last night was the first good night's sleep I've had in several days. Thank-you.
-
Yesterday, whe der Brucer and I went to the Rehoboth Beach Farmer's Market, I bought some spring onions. I sauteed them in butter, and served them with roast pork.
The onions were tangy and sweet at the same time, and enjoyable.
We also bought some lump crab meat, which I'd better fix for our dinner tonight, and some summer squash. I have no ideas as to how to prepare the crab.
Any crabby ideas out there?

VIBES TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVEN'T BEEN SLEEPING WELL!!
I'm including myself as a vibe recipient, what with all the death and the termites surrounding me.
At least my own family and pets are all fine!
(I don't mourn the termite deaths that will occur today...)

We are having a lovely COLD snap here, folks! Temperatures will only by in the mid-90s today! It would be great for hiking, except the air is unhealthy to breathe.

Boy if you think President Bush has problems with his cabinet - you should read DR LAURA's story from yesterday.

DR CILLA LIZ - there were no numbers under your video so we could vote for you as our favorite!!!

Thanks. I need them too.

Drama drama drama.
Our first ad of the season appeared yesterday in the local Greencastle paper, and the price for tickets was WRONG.
I got ten emails from "concerned" board members wondering what was going on. I talked to the editor (go right to the top, I always say) - and then the advertising manager who assured me that the change would be made.

Boy if you think President Bush has problems with his cabinet - you should read DR LAURA's story from yesterday.
I was able to get rid of the old one and get a new one. Problem solved.

MR BK will make many people in many audiences happy this weekend.
Oh....my Return to Oz CD arrived today. :)

DR MusicGuy - My DH Richard and I will be in NYC June 28-July 2. Will our visits overlap?
Hi DR Ginny.... Yes, I'll still be there on the 28th & 29th. I'm coming into the city at the start of that week. You have quite a fan club, in the form of dear DR Mikey Barnum..... he was telling me what a nice person you are (when he and I were visiting in Los Angeles), so I look forward to the pleasure of meeting you in person.

Read or watch the TV miniseries of Stephen King's "The Stand" to fully appreciate the usage.
There is a character named Tom who, for want of a better word, is retarded. Conscious Tom is retarded, but subconscious Tom is a wholly different entity.
At any rate, Tom never made it through school. Whenever something unpleasant occurs in the story -- or something is about to happen that Tom wishes to give import to -- he will say, "It's about to rain. M-o-o-n, that spells "rain."
In other words, Tom can spell "moon"...and he uses that spelling for everything he wishes to emphasize.
-
"M-o-o-n" -- that spells Wednesday.
Already???
Hooray!
-
When will it end? Do I need to get a prescription for XANAX?
Nah...just use a wine bottle. (Or, a bottle of wine).
-
The above was a Woody Allen "Love and Death" reference. Make of it what you will.
-
If UPS actually delivers what the tracking system says is "out for delivery" (UPS does not ALWAYS deliver things their tracking says is "out for delivery"...trust me on that), I shall have my new HD DVD player this everning.
Doesn't much matter, because I won't be getting the HDMI cable I purchased through Amazon.com until tomorrow or Friday, at the earliest.
I may actually have to go out and BUY one locally, since the Amazon vendor from whom I purchased the cable on Monday didn't ship until late yesterday afternoon.

Could that be why, although I'm sleeping OK, I don't feel rested? Or maybe I'm just staying up too late and getting up too early...
Or maybe

I'm expecting the new DVD of "The Sand Pebbles" in today's UPS delivery, as well.
Of course, based on UPS tracking info, I was expecting it yesterday, too. Sigh.
-
It's official.
I got it directly from my postman.
The USPS does NOT deliver all the mail it has for you as it receives it.
My postman told me yesterday that Tuesdays, locally, are given over to fourth class deliveries. I asked if that meant that first class mail/packages, etc., would be allowed to sit an extra day.
He said that was correct, unless it was Express.
That explains so-o-o-o-o-o much. At least, on the local front. It probably differs from postal area to postal area.

I was able to get rid of the old one and get a new one. Problem solved.

Wow! I just got off the phone...not one minute ago. I received a call/message from UPS notifying me of a delivery today of an iimportant item that MUST be signed for (as if you could get UPS delivery "without" signing for it).
It's my HD DVD which is "out for delivery"....but with the phone call, I'm totally CERTAIN I'll get it today.
I ain't never gotten no phone call notification of an impending Amazon.com UPS delivery afore!!!

I was shopping a couple of months ago at my local Goodwill outlet, and there on the shelf was an HDMI cable for $1.99.
I bought it....and DR MATTH informed me how it should be hooked up to my new LDC television and it works fine.
Although...I have NOT seen one there since.

Good Morning!

That's beautiful Ginny. Hope you can save it. The Williges building isn't the most beautiful in town, but Sioux City has some wonderful architecture and many buildings have been torn down over the past 20 years or so. It's now to the point where we really can't afford to lose another one.
Yes, it's a beautiful space, DR Cillaliz. One of the other speakers in your video said that once it's gone we'll never be able to replace it. That's exactly what I said about the Arcade yesterday at a lunch table full of grantmakers.

DR MBarnum - when exactly are you coming in again? I seem to recall June 28-July 1.

Watching the hearings about the exceedingly handsome (a DantheMan news-alert reference) Andrew Speaker, the tuberculosis patient.
It's so strange to hear them constantly saying "Mister Speaker" in official hearings in reference to the patient.
-
DR Ginny - Do you have your tickets yet for the new Sara Ruhl play at Woolly Mammoth? Just curious.
-
Ginny - Are you seeing Witches of Eastwick at the Signature in Arlington? Did I miss a discussion of your theatre plans in the D.C. area?
-
It's so strange to hear them constantly saying "Mister Speaker" in official hearings in reference to the patient.
Yes. I was hoping that they'd refer to him as "Madame Speaker," as well. :)

DR Ginny - Do you have your tickets yet for the new Sara Ruhl play at Woolly Mammoth? Just curious.
DR Jose - alas, that's something we just may have to miss. Our Saturday and Sunday in DC are pretty booked with my conference, as is the Wednesday evening before we head up to NYC. If we were staying in DC the whole time we're away, we'd go that second weekend. Do you think they'd do a command performance just for me on Tuesday evening?
-
As for Xanadu - Well, I liked it. Was it deep and meaningful? No. Was it worthy of a full-scale "Broadway" treatment? Well... Is it filled with lots of self-referential cheap laughs? Yes. Is it filled with a lot of other corny and 'easy' jokes? Yes. So...
POSSIBLE SPOILER
I will say I was sort of "confused" by the look of the show. I had trouble determining if the sort of "cheap" and "thrift store" look was meant to mock to the movie - and the 70s, or if it was more a result of the budget. And even though the stage of the Helen Hayes is small, and there are seats on the stage, there just seemed to be a lot of empty space up there. ??? And Howell Binkley's lighting seemed oddly lacking to me. I've worked on two shows with Howell, and, again, I just had to wonder if they didn't have enough money for better lighting effects, or if it was purposely made to look that way.
-Oh, and there were sounds problems the night that DR FJL and I saw it too.
-
I just learned that the wonderful Anita Morris and Grover Dale have a son in the business, James Badge Dale. Anita's best friend was Mrs Ron Raines, and she just informed me of this fact.
OK, off to the NYPL.
-
XANADU again...
And, yes, I liked the joke about children's theatre. However, I don't think it was in reference to NAMBLA.
-
-Oh, and there were sound problems the night that DR FJL and I saw it too.
Perhaps the sound engineer needs to boost the levels to counter the snoring from the audience? ;)

Oh, that's right. They're on their Wednesday-Sunday performance schedule. Well... If the show gets great reviews, and the audience demand is there, Woolly will add Tuesday night shows. Just keep your eye on the Washington Post. I think the officially opening is this coming weekend.
-
While it is TRUE that I've been greatly enjoying the post-TV season programming lull, I do look at daily schedules to see if anything tempting might lure me away from my DVD watching.
Fortunately, I have to say I've not been so tempted.
In fact, after looking at this evening's schedule, I have to say that network television seems to be a crap heap of awfulness.
-
Perhaps the sound engineer needs to boost the levels to counter the snoring from the audience? ;)
Well, I don't think I detected any snoring. Lots of tittering, but no snoring.
-
I, of course, blame Jose.

Jericho' fans assail CBS with 25 tons of peanuts
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Fans trumpeting the cause of CBS' canceled drama "Jericho" have caught the network's ear.
CBS, deluged with calls, messages and shipments of nuts signifying viewer displeasure, is reconsidering its decision, a source close to the production said Tuesday.
The source spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment publicly. A decision on whether to bring the show back, probably for a midseason run, is imminent, the source said.
"We are tired of the networks (not just CBS) tossing aside quality programming," was the message carried by jericholives.com, one of several Web sites protesting the cancellation. "Enough! We're going to fight for this one."

DR Ben - I was about to say the same thing as DR Singdaw, be careful of the traffic in the Hartford area. And even before the Hartford area. In any case...
Can't you get the presentation time moved? ;)
-
DR Ron Pulliam - thanks, very much, for the explanation.

Oh, I guess I should get ready to head in for the matinee of A Chorus Line. -I need to grab some lunch beforehand too. I'm only observing the other keyboard book today, and I'll probably hang out between shows to practice a little bit since the equipment will be on. And I may just stay for the evening show too. And then we'll see when I get to go on for the first time. We shall see. Laters...
-
Ginny - Are you seeing Witches of Eastwick at the Signature in Arlington? Did I miss a discussion of your theatre plans in the D.C. area?
DR FJL - the DC segment of this trip is business for me (Saturday and Sunday are full conference days - oy). Much of the socializing will be visits with librarian friends from Illinois, Iowa, and California who I only get to see at these national conferences. One of our evenings, we'll be having dinner with our friends Doug & Jon, who live in NYC, but will be at the conference with Jon's work. They'll be on vacation by the time DH Richard and I get to New York.
Thanks for the tip about the Signature production, though. I'll keep it in my notes, in case a window opens up. We're staying in Arlington (Crystal City), but I have no idea how close we'll be to that theatre.
-
DR Jose - I had some of those same reactions to the Curtains packaging, especially Karen's photo.
Thanks, too, for the heads-up about WM adding Tuesday performances. I'll watch for it...
-
From Cilla
I just watched it again. It's very short, and I did fine, but I just don't like the idea of having anything on You Tube....that's pretty funny really, I went to a meeting to save a building tonight and was just planning on being there to show support, well of course I ended up talking about how beautiful the building is and how it breaks my heart that the bank wants to tear it down to build a parking lot.....and of course there were cameras there from 3 local TV stations, so I'll probably be on tonight.
I think I would be hesitant to put myself on You Tube. Any other way I can watch the clip?
I keep thinking of the words from BIG YELLOW TAXI, "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot".
-
For Ask BK Day: Maybe I missed your answer when I've asked before, but is Guy Haines making an appearance at the November benefit?
I don't think Guy will be making an appearance, no.
-
I'm all alone in the jernt, at least right now.
While the above line may indeed be funny on some level, it's everything that's wrong with musical theater - self-referential and making it okay that the show is bad. That line alone would keep me away. But you should read the posts about the show - from 40 year old gay men who say that it's the best thing ever and is great because it's so bad. If that's where we've come, count me out.
-
Cilla it was fun to see you on video, the reason is so sad. I enjoyed the close ups of the building detail. I’m sure it is even prettier in person.
DtM-In Portland they might turn the Sears building into a loft.

Were the prices listed as higher or lower than actual? If higher, patrons will be happy when they learn that they won't have to spend as much. On the other hand, it might deter them from calling at all.

I guess I'm up. Very groggy, but alive, but alive, but alive.
I'm stuffed up, and I have no idea if my voice is with me or not, but it usually comes back after the jog and such.

I don't think the stage XANADU intends to be "so bad it's good" - it intends to be good at being entertaining, and it's saying the original MOVIE is "so bad that riffing on it is a hoot," as least from the way I saw it. I thought it was a very entertaining extended variety sketch. The only thing wrong with it, IMHO, is that it should have let itself be discovered off-Broadway. And the sound at times. :)
-
XANADU again...
And, yes, I liked the joke about children's theatre. However, I don't think it was in reference to NAMBLA.
No, the joke had nothing to do with NAMBLA. I don't know if Woody was being serious or not but it's just a funny line, that's all.
I'm glad you guys liked it. I just wish I liked it more. I'm so not a fan of the movie and perhaps that's one of the reasons I'm so negative about it. I do know that I went in hoping it would either be a big delicious mess that I could laugh about or that I would actually have fun and like it. Neither happened.

Question #2 For Ask BK Day
Do you have any "Lost In Boston" Songs? (Other than Where is A Man from 1st Nudie Musical)
-
Golly but I hate it when Deep Discount has a supersale!

Question #2 For Ask BK Day
Do you have any "Lost In Boston" Songs? (Other than Where is A Man from 1st Nudie Musical)
If you mean songs cut from shows I wrote - sure. Stages' What A Night This Is Going To Be was cut and replaced with Opposites. The Brain originally had a completely different Donna song in act one and Zubrick had a different song up until three days before the staged reading. I can't remember if Together Again had any cut songs (I don't think so), but I know that Start At The Top did.
-
There is no DVD of Xanadu the new Broadway stage musical. It just began performances a couple of weeks ago. I don't know if anyone was talking about a DVD. Today we were talking about the new Broadway musical production and referencing the movie (on which it was based) as we spoke/wrote.
There is a DVD of Xanadu, the movie, with Olivia Newton-John, Michael Beck and Gene Kelly and there is a CD of the soundtrack but there is no Original Cast Recording of the new Broadway musical. It doesn't open until June 26.
-
Oh, just remembered that there WAS a cut song in Together Again - actually mostly musically - I retained a lot of the lyric of Annie's number in act one (Don't Let It Go) but it had completely different music and a different title originally.
-
Yes, Singdaw and DC, Xanadu with ONJ is a musical (though I use that term loosely).
-
I think the title was something like Let It Happen.
-
I have had an amusing day today, so far....
ONe of the tracks of THE BRAIN keep running through my head and with books at the library being checked out by students being due on July 5, I keep saying the day in the melody of "Independence Day"....

My favorite song from the movie version is "Have to believe in Magic"

(as if you could get UPS delivery "without" signing for it).
You do have Urban blues.
Here in the hinterlands, the Post Office delivers all classes of mail, each and every day (save Sun and Hols) - if a package is too large for the mailbox, the carrier walks down the drive and deposits it on the front stoop. Likewise the UPS guy, he has no problem leaving deliveries by the door.
The above are probably examples of a rural disregard for rules and regulations that works well for the customer.

How do you decide what gets uploaded to your iPod? I usually transfer any new CD directly to mine, and then decide whether to keep it there or not after I've listened to it. But you collect a heck of a lot more CDs than I do--you don't load everything to your iPod, do you?

I don't decide, really. I just load things into iTunes as I need them and then all of that gets put into the iPod. But I never listen to new albums that way - I'm old fashioned - I love the moonlight, and love to play my new CDs in Ye Olde CD player.

Can someone tell me whatever happened to Radio Shack?
Am I misremembering....or wasn't there a time when Radio Shack was the place to go to get things "inexpensively" that were way overpriced elsewhere....especially comparing Radio Shack brand to "brand names"?
At any rate, I've come to terms with having to wait...up to 8 days, for my HDMI cable to arrive (although I hope only GOOD things will happen).
The thing is, I'm getting my HD DVD player TODAY (I think). And I won't be able to fully integrate it into my system without the HDMI cable.
So...I went out on a power walk this morning....1.5 miles to City Center Plaza where there is a Radio Shack.
And what do I find? The in-house prices range from $49.99 to $119.95...."What brand would you prefer?", I was asked.
"The one I ordered online for $5.61", I replied. "I'll be patient and wait for it!"
Radio Shack....feh!

They were a contenduh at one time with their Tandy Home PC that certainly compared favorably with IBM's first models, but they got mired in lawsuits, bad management, and tried to expand too quickly.

-I guess if I had not picked up the OCR to the 110 In the Shade at the same with the typically lavish PS Classics packaging...
I can't disagree about the booklet, but I do like Rupert's liner notes. I'm not one to read the lyrics so that doesn't bother me, but KZ should have had a prominant photo and you can't see her with the "hub" in the way
I do like that they recorded the lines leading into the songs to have some context.
-
We also bought some lump crab meat, which I'd better fix for our dinner tonight, and some summer squash. I have no ideas as to how to prepare the crab.
Any crabby ideas out there?
Can't we just do something simple? Lettuce leaves, crab meat, and cocktail sauce (a very special version of which I also procured at the Farmer's market). If we want extravagent, put out a block of cream cheese and some good crackers. (Maybe I should get a nice bottle of Rhine wine to serve.)
Of course when he gets home and discovers the Amazon box with the Lady In The Dark bio and Elmore's favorite, Morden's All That Glittered, he'll loose interest in cooking.
And Mr Amazon also deliverd THE CLOSETR Season 2 to keep me amused.

From CillaI think I would be hesitant to put myself on You Tube. Any other way I can watch the clip?
I keep thinking of the words from BIG YELLOW TAXI, "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot".
Jane, there is a link to the building news story on page 3 of the posts today. If that doesn't work let me know and I'll email a link to you

I'm afraid to ask WHY... ;)
You don't want to "toy" with any of his motions?

I'm afraid to ask WHY... ;)
Well, where do you go for your nine volt toy motor kits?
-
Cilla it was fun to see you on video, the reason is so sad. I enjoyed the close ups of the building detail. I’m sure it is even prettier in person.
Ah, ignore the last post, you found it. Yes the building is better than the footage. It has decayed and needs some TLC, but with a little TLC it would be fabulous again. It's structurally sound it was designed by William Steele who was big in the Prairie Style of architecture. We have a alot of examples of his work in Sioux City, but I believe this was one of his last.
-
I don't think Guy will be making an appearance, no.
It would have been nice if he could have come out and performed in moody silhouette lighting.

Cilla, the above comment referred to your stint as a weather person :). I thought the u tube comments were about that, not the building story.

I totally agree Edi... The man is totally cool!

No, the joke had nothing to do with NAMBLA. I don't know if Woody was being serious or not but it's just a funny line, that's all.
Trust me, he was kidding; if he were serious, we'd have had a multiparagraph rant.

And I, too, would have laughed at the line.

Who is this person and why is he preserving his facade?
-
Who is this person
The infamous TB guy...
-
And I thought you were a tender-hearted liberal....
Speaking of tender...
My favorite termite joke:
A termite walks into a bar and asks:
"Where is the bar tender?"

You can now submit your question for THE CLOSER live webcast now at tvguide.com
Also, news flash: Barry Corbin will play Brenda's father. Perfect---I love him!
-
The infamous TB guy...
And why do people think he's "attractive"?
-
I just learned that the wonderful Anita Morris and Grover Dale have a son in the business, James Badge Dale. Anita's best friend was Mrs Ron Raines, and she just informed me of this fact.
Sorry I hadn't bothered to mention this before. He was a regular on '24' for a good bit of the second season until he sacrificed himself to save others.
No, he didn't give his life, only his hand/arm. I can't remember now which it was.
-
The infamous TB guy...
Oh. I'd never seen that photo of him before and I'd forgotten what his name was. Thank you.
-
No, I haven't bought cables or splitters from Radio Shack in quite awhile. Their prices have gone up ridiculously.
-
I began my afternoon of viewing with, what else?, THE CLOSER. This was the episode with the woman shot dead in her house, discovered by the mailman. A good episode with many surprises.
It also marked the return of Ray Wise, this time functioning as Brenda's attorney, and he's just flat-out great. He made a great vice-president on '24' a couple of seasons ago, too.
-
I watched an ANGEL episode next. In this one we learn that Cordy's pregnant and also harboring a rather important secret.
But the horned demon was at last defeated. Angellus, unfortunately, is still at large. Wes freed Faith from prison so she could help him track and get Angellus under control.
-
Next, I watched Kathy Griffin's MY LIFE ON THE 'D' LIST from last night. Some fun new people on her "entourage," and her new male assistant was hilarious oogling Kelly Pickler when Kathy did THE VIEW.
-
I did manage to finish FROM THE TERRACE, but I am really glad I didn't spring for the DVD. Though the ending made perfect sense, it was a long, irritating road to get there.
-
Today has been quite interesting. I've spent time with:
-a Russian environmental scientist looking for funding to translate a book
-the library's early literacy specialist
-a public school teacher who runs an urban volunteer program for high school students
-a counselor from a local university who wants me to do grants training for her staff
-a community organizer who's helping someone secure a piece of property for a new nonprofit
And, I've successfully used our brand new self-check system to borrow an audiobook ;D
-
I watched a little bit of WAY OUT WEST. I had watched it before, and while it's an OK William Haines movie, I prefer his silent films, at least of the ones I've seen.
Richard Barrios is co-hosting the gay festival with Robert Osborne.
-
I ended the afternoon watching another ANGEL episode. In this one, Faith and Wes finally track Angellus down, and we find out who the deep-voiced master is who's pulling all the strings.
Connor is thrilled to be thinking about becoming a new daddy.
-
Tonight, I'm going to be watching THE LOVED ONE after I watch one more ANGEL episode. That will help me finish off that disc in the set. One more disc to go to finish out ANGEL's fourth season.

Just checked and I am not sure where you are seeing that. THere is nothing on the noaa site.

As you yourself have said, DR Ron Pulliam: that's what makes life interesting. :)
-
Good news just came in on the musical theatre project: our formatting of the new scores has been approved, which means we will not be closing down. Now if we lease on the new office signed, we're good to go for a while!
Maybe I'll start sleeping easier.

Good news, DR Elmore!

I did manage to finish FROM THE TERRACE, but I am really glad I didn't spring for the DVD. Though the ending made perfect sense, it was a long, irritating road to get there.
It plays much better in one sitting. IMO, of course. And it's a sumptuous feast in letterboxed stereo DVD! A grand melodramatic soaper with a most attractive cast and one of Elmer Bernstein's finest scores.
-
As you yourself have said, DR Ron Pulliam: that's what makes life interesting. :)
True, but his face suggests a more literal meaning to the phrase "Horses for courses".

Hey, now! Connick is da man!
-
Great news DR Elmore!
-
I found that I just didn't like any of the characters in FROM THE TERRACE. Yes, it's sumptuous looking (Woodward has never looked so glamorous), and the Fox Movie Channel broadcast the wtereo surround track.
But I just didn't enjoy spending time with any of these people.

Hey all. School is finally coming to a close. One more graduation to do and I'm done... forever!!! I should be able to check in more here at HHW and I will definately keep you all posted on the plans for the big move in October.
For reasons I'm tired of rehashing, I have found myself with an extra copy of "The Creature Wasn't Nice", if any DR is interested in this extra copy, I'll be happy to send it to them. There is even a signed CD booklet. Send me a PM and I'll take the first PM I receive and get it out to you. It's a ton of fun!

He knows all about having been "seduced", that's for sure.
I think maybe Elmore will have to hire a deprogrammer once MBarnum hits NYC.

Any crabby ideas out there?
Why not a crab quiche (whoops, real men don't eat quiche) souffle?
-
OK... So I got DRs Ginny and MusicGuy NYC dates...
DR MBarnum - when exactly are you coming in again? I seem to recall June 28-July 1.
Why does Ginny need a NYC date, she's got a husband?
And I thought you were MBarnum's date (at least for an hour).
-
While it is TRUE that I've been greatly enjoying the post-TV season programming lull, I do look at daily schedules to see if anything tempting might lure me away from my DVD watching.
Fortunately, I have to say I've not been so tempted.
In fact, after looking at this evening's schedule, I have to say that network television seems to be a crap heap of awfulness.
Or, Woody, you could serve a crab heap of awfulness.
-
I think maybe Elmore will have to hire a deprogrammer once MBarnum hits NYC.
For me! when he leaves.
-
And I thought you were MBarnum's date (at least for an hour).
I believe DR MBarnum is afraid of being alone with DR Jose for more than two or three minutes.
-
Why not a crab quiche (whoops, real men don't eat quiche) souffle?
Tomorrow may end up crab day - Woody has had his sentence extended for four hours - pick up at eight (If I'm a realist, I should take him another shirt and suggest dinner out - our favorite Bistro has a Customer Appeciation night - 15% off of all the food and half-price bottles of wine).

Spoo - that's tomorrow- tonite is plain ole burger night!

Back from rehearsal at the Avalon. A little history: When I was a teen, the Avalon (located on Vine, just above Hollywood Blvd) was called the El Capitan (the Paramount movie theater would not be renamed the El Capitan until Disney bought it). It was dark and, as far as I know, there hadn't been shows in there for several years. But they used to leave their doors open for some reason, so I used to sneak in there with my friend (the one portrayed in Kritzerland) and used to play with the lighting and do little made-up shows on the stage. Flash forward, and the El Capitan became the Hollywood Palace, where many TV shows were taped, including the long-running Merv Griffin Show, which I appeared on in 1972.
The lobby still looks nice, and they've managed to keep most of the interestingly designed interior walls. The proscenium is still there, but the stage has been moved way back from it and it's much higher than it used to be. Then, all the downstairs seats have been removed, and there are some booths at the back, along with a bar. Upstairs where the balcony is is basically the same.
Rehearsal was fun, and the sound is 1000% better than the Colony - this is a real rock-and-roll venue - the head mics sound great for dialogue, and the music sounds incredible. Plus, they've got incredible lighting - I didn't even have to talk to the guy, he just started doing stuff and knows exactly what he's doing.
-
My voice will hold for tonight, I think. It was pretty weird this morning, but it's been coming back all day.
-
Good Afternoon!
Back from the matinee of A Chorus Line. The Key 3 book is a very easy. :) So much so, that I didn't even bother to take the spare copy to make a practice copy of the book - and the assistant conductor was totally fine with that, she agreed. So, I'll probably go in tomorrow before tomorrow night's show, run through the book a couple of times, and then play Saturday's matinee in order to get "designated". And then we'll see how often I get scheduled after that.
:)
-
Back from Whole Foods - a.k.a. Whole Paycheck. I bought some things I needed, and some things I really didn't need - can you say "exotic chocolate bars"? -The Vosges Chocolate Bars were on sale!
And if I'm good, I should be able to have all my meals at home for the rest of the week now that my cupboard and fridge is stocked.
:)
-
As for the NAMBLA comment made earlier... I'm pretty sure it was not meant seriously, but just in case other DRs may not have been sure how to take that... ;)
-
I believe DR MBarnum is afraid of being alone with DR Jose for more than two or three minutes.
Correction: Two or three seconds.
-
DR elmore - Great news! And I do hope you start sleeping better. You need to rest up for DR MBarnum's visit.

It's one of the proposals, and yes, it's actually what everyone wants if they aren't going to save the whole building
-
As for the "two faces" of Mr. Andrew Speaker... The picture that was going around on the news services when the news came out was from a college yearbook or something like that. Not that recent a photo. As for the recent photo, I think if you take out the red eyes, then he would look much better. I think he looks better "now" then he did "then". Of course, "then" he didn't have TB.
-
DR elmore - Great news! And I do hope you start sleeping better. You need to rest up for DR MBarnum's visit.
Well, the lease has yet to be signed but things are looking better. As to DR MBarnum's invasion, I mean visit, I need drugs, heavy meds, not sleep.
-
As for the extra material on the Curtains CD... Well, I'd always rather have more than less on CDs nowadays. I'm still sort of amazed that some pop CDs still have an LPs worth of music on them - 48 minutes or less. Usually less. And they now list at $19.99!
-
What's happened to his nose? I might have to re-classify him from "exceptionally handsome" to "kind of has that Harry Connick thing going but eh".
I think I know what you mean by that "Harry Connick thing", but I also think it all depends what angle Mr. Connick is photographed from. And whether or not his biceps are exposed.
-
As I was walking to my car tonight, two people arrived at the ramp the same time I did. The very heavy man looked at me for a few minutes then looked at the woman and said..."Boy, it's sure a lot longer to walk here than the other parking place" she obviously hadn't watched the news last night and said "I don't think so, maybe 2 steps" then he said "Well, we have to cross 2 streets, it's a lot more dangerous" Oh puhleese. This guy works at the bank, I'm going to find out who he is. He can't walk 1/2 block and cross 2 streets with streetlights!!! I am really disgusted now... I didn't say anything. He just wasn't worth it

The infamous TB guy...
Which makes me the famous TB guy

You're right. The second photo is much more fetching. The top photo makes it look like he's missing the front of his hair.
Well, the bottom photo looks like he's trying to mask his high forehead. The top photo is more like "truth in advertising". ;)

Well, the only times I ever go to Radio Shack are to plug-adapters for my headphones, or a splitter for my phone. However, even some of those items have been "prettied" up, and they're charging more for them.
As for cables - HMDIs, RCAs, 1/4-inchers, etc... The pricing of those items has always bewildered me. I remember when they used to be somewhat reasonably/understandably priced, but I think once the whole "high tech audio and video" market started to boom, then so did the prices for those cables. A friend of mine, used to make his own, and he used to make some for me too. I still have a couple of 20-foot 1/4-inch audio cables that he made - my cost (which was his cost) was only $1.75 per cable. The same cable at an audio supply store: $24.95 - and that was for the "cheap brand".
But there are still a few cheaper-priced items at Radio Shack. Alas, they're usually not ones that you want nor need.
*I've found that Target has audio and video accessories at decent prices. (Most of them are from GE.)

Is the stage version the same as the movie version... I did not mind some of the music but I did not care for some of it. Olivia was not that bad but I did not care for the male singer and his name escapes me at the moment.
My favorite song from the movie version is "Have to believe in Magic"
The stage version is basically inspired by the movie, for lack of a better word. It's sort of its own entity. If you check Playbill.com - and other theatre sites - there have been plenty of interviews and features with the director and creative team.

Gene Kelly was good in the movie. He is not too bad of a clarinetist. I did like the track where they had the 1940s flashback.
Well, the guy who played clarinet on the soundtrack was not a bad clarinetist. Alas, Gene Kelly was a good faker, not a great one, but a good one. -At least when it came to pretending to play the clarinet.

UPS leaves everything in my neighborhood without a signature, UNLESS the shipper has specified that the package MUST be signed for. Very convenient! :)
Same here in my 'hood in NYC. -That's if s/he gets buzzed in the front door. However, I believe the main motivation for leaving the packages has more to do with not wanting to put the package back on the track, and having to attempt to re-deliver it the next day than being "convenient for the customer".
*However, our regular UPS guy, happens to know me by first initial and last name since my room is on the ground floor, and I'm usually the one who's home to sign for packages.

If you're in Crystal City, you're just one exit away from Signature via I-95. Alas, Signature is not subway accessible, so a cab would be your most convenient way to get there.

Call me Sleezy Farkledoodle!
A. Follow the instructions to find your new name.
B. Once you have your new name, put it in the
subject box and forward it to friends and family and co-workers.
Don't forget to forward it back to the person who sent it to you, so they
know you participated.
And don't go all adult - a senior manager is now known far and wide as Dorky
Gizzardsniffer!
The following is excerpted from a children's book, Captain Underpants And
the Perilous Plot Professor Poopypants, by Dave Pilkey , in which the evil
Professor forces everyone to assume new names...
So:-
1. Use the third letter of your first name to determine your New first name:
a = snickle
b = doombah
c = goober
d = cheesey
e = crusty
f = greasy
g = dumbo
h = farcus
i = dorky
j = doofus
k = funky
l = boobie
m = sleezy
n = sloopy
o = fluffy
p = stinky
q = slimy
r = dorfus
s = snooty
t = tootsie
u = dipsy
v = sneezy
w = liver
x = skippy
y = dinky
z = zippy
2. Use the second letter of your last name to determine the first half of
your new last name:
a = dippin
b = feather
c = batty
d = burger
e = chicken
f = barffy
g = lizard
h = waffle
i = farkle
j = monkey
k = flippin
l = fricken
m = bubble
n = rhino
o = potty
p = hamster
q = buckle
r = gizzard
s = lickin
t = snickle
u = chuckle
v = pickle
w = hubble
x =
dingle
y = gorilla
z = girdle
3. Use the third letter of your last name to determine the second half of
your new last name:
a = butt
b = boob
c = face
d = nose
e = hump
f = breath
g = pants
h = shorts
i = lips
j = honker
k = head
l = tush
m = chunks
n = dunkin
o = brains
p = biscuits
q = toes
r = doodle
s = fanny
t = sniffer
u = sprinkles
v = frack
w = squirt
x = humperdinck
y = hiney
z = juice
Thus, for example, George W. Bush 's new name is: Fluffy Chucklefanny.
Now when you SEND THIS ON...use your new nam e as the subject.
And remember that children laugh an average of 146 times a day; adults laugh
an average of 4 times a day. Put more laughter in your
day!!

The one I really like is reasonably paced and has a snippet where Brenda answers a comment about ruining a wedding with a smart quip.
The other is a quick cut and paste job that moves so fast it's hard to focus on any particular image - I'll try and pay more attention.

Ha! The quick cut one was done by the department head that likes to go in and "play". We had cut a "new season hype" spot, but she wanted to see what her editor could "bring to the table".
Her editor cut her spot from a DVD and then I had to go back into about 60 or 70 dailies tapes to find the actual shots that were used in the edited show (we didn't have the online yet.) There were tons of 3 and 4 frame edits, and she had reels with those same scenes, but no....she had to find the exact scene her editor had used, because of course those three or 4 frames wouldn't have the same emotional impact as the ones on the clip reels. That was torturous but I did it.
Of course, she would chalk it up to both of us being "old" and that she wanted to do something edgy. And she only submits her own spots for awards, and will make us keep repurposing her spot so you will be seeing it for awhile.
I'm still at work but this has cheered me up. ("I did that groom a big favor." is the quote, I think. It's the hilarious third episode, which is followed by a tragic and deadly serious 4th episode.)
-
Today has been quite interesting.
Congrats...especially on the self-check system. We've had them here at our library system for a couple of years and it seems to be catching on. Patrons and employees really like it.

Good news just came in on the musical theatre project: our formatting of the new scores has been approved, which means we will not be closing down. Now if we lease on the new office signed, we're good to go for a while!

A couple of weeks ago, I had a (somewhat long and involved) question about the score to "The Creature Wasn't Nice," but I can't remember what it was all about...I hate it when that happens. :P
So, I'll try to remember what it was, but if I don't...oh, well. :-\
I remembered my question for ASK BK DAY! I had actually copied it to a Word document and saved it...here it is:
BK, I have a question about the score to "The Creature Wasn’t Nice." In the liner notes, you wrote about David Spear not wanting to listen to the temp track that you had put together for the film and you didn't make him listen to it and that the main title theme that he wrote wasn't the right style for what you wanted. Assuming that David has since seen the movie, does/did he agree with you that the opening theme wasn't right for the opening? Is there any possibility for David (or even you) to rewrite or adapt it so that it's closer to what you had originally wanted? Assuming that money is no object, would either of you have the time or even the interest to do that?
-
Congrats...especially on the self-check system. We've had them here at our library system for a couple of years and it seems to be catching on. Patrons and employees really like it.
Today, it was operational only in the audio-visual department and they were handing out chocolate to people for trying it. Tomorrow we go live at the main desk, where people check out books. Reserves are now self-serve, too.

I can't speak for David, but he has a very healthy ego so I doubt he agrees with me. I don't think he's be interested in rewriting it, and certainly I wouldn't it, so I'm afraid we live with it. If you want to hear the main title music I used in the temp track - it's Dimitri Tiomkin's Main Title to The Thing.

Back from rehearsal at the Avalon. But they used to leave their doors open for some reason, so I used to sneak in there with my friend (the one portrayed in Kritzerland) and used to play with the lighting and do little made-up shows on the stage.

DRs SWW and DerBrucer - Just how was the crab meat you bought packed? Was it jarred? or sold loose and in a bag/plastic container? Fresher is always better when it comes to crab meat, imho.
And simpler is always better too. Just take an avocado, half it, take the pit out, and fill it with the crab meat. Maybe a squeeze of lemon juice, a dab of mayo if you like, and some capers. Dinner is served.
Or there are always crabcakes.

I had about 45 minutes before the start of SIGN OF THE CROSS (which I had decided I'd watch again), so I flipped over to the Free Movies on Demand Channel. One of the more extensive listings were films and specials from TCM, and they had both sections of BRANDO on demand, so I chose the second section and watched it again (or at least until 8).
-
I did watch SIGN OF THE CROSS. I think it looked better since the last time TCM aired it. I know it was part of a recent Cecil B. Demille DVD set, but this really looked quite nice. I didn't catch the name of the officer who was subordinate to Fredric March, but I'll do some research to find out who he was. Very good looking and with a beautiful physique.

TCB - Thanks again for alerting us about the non-attribution of Skip's song from FRIENDS AND FAMILY on the web. We don't know what to do yet about the movie's website, but at least his imdb page
http://akas.imdb.com/name/nm0448535
has been updated so that if anyone has any interest in finding out who wrote the song, a simple search on google will now turn that up, while it didn't before. The imdb even let me add a "mini-biography" for Skip, which was very convenient.

Next on TCM was a George Cukor film I had never seen before except for the tiny little excerpt in THE CELLULOID CLOSET - OUR BETTERS. A very high-style, very artificial comedy with Constance Bennett and Gilbert Roland. Very "la-dee-dah" kind of stuff, but an interesting film to see for the first time.

Today was a very busy day, after getting home late from the play last night. Our dear Bruce was splendid and funny and his voice melted me :) It is one thing to hear it on a c.d., but to hear it live is very powerful and I was very happy to catch a rare Kimmel performance (even if I did show up unexpectedly). I went to rehearsal at the Avalon, which I had never seen before, and listened to Bruce rail about how they changed the theater and how could they do such a thing. I think that the theater is still beautiful, and at least it is still there instead of torn down entirely.
After rehearsal I worked on the script for the Hollywood High School Alumni show I am stage managing this friday, getting the cues in order and sensible, then worked out some problems with the director of the show. Tomorrow morning I will be up bright and early to head over to the school to work out more problems with various faculty and performers. Then i shall sign up for my classes next semester.

SHOWTRACKER (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/)
'Jericho': Its renewal is official
The fictional town of “Jericho” survived a nearby nuclear blast, and now the CBS drama, canceled just last month, will live to see another day.
After much fanfare—intense viewer support that came in the form of letters, petitions and lots of nuts delivered to CBS headquarters, network executives have re-grouped and decided to give the Skeet Ulrich-led drama a second chance.
On Wednesday, CBS President of Entertainment Nina Tassler ordered seven episodes of the series to air sometime in mid-season, crediting the fervent cancellation protest as “creative, sustained and very thoughtful and respectful in tone.”

I'm now off to attend Harlequin Productions' (http://www.harlequinproductions.org/) Volunteer Appreciation dinner and to see the final dress rehearsal of their revue, "Soul On Fire!" I'm so glad that I'm seeing this for free! Their ticket prices are $34-$38! For local theater! And it's a revue that they created! ::) But it'll be very good. :)
Well, the Harlequin show was...the final dress rehearsal. ::) It's just a revue of songs and after reading about how BK put together "What If?" and the need for a "point" to a revue, it's VERY obvious that this doesn't really have a point, just song after song after song. The band was fantastic...they are all professionals from the area and I've worked with most of them on shows in the past. The singers for the most part were very good. The three women singers were fantastic. The two men...not so much. Vocally, the guys were pretty good, but neither of them really had much rhythm when it came to dancing. For the first 15 or so minutes, I felt like I was watching an amateur review. After that, it got a bit better. The second act was much better than the first. I want to usher for it late in the run after they've gotten through more performances (and audiences). Tonight was the first time that they had an audience, and I'm glad I didn't pay. I know that the performances will get better, but I don't think that the show itself will. We'll see.
-

Thanks for the info. I haven't watched this in quite a while and (I'm ashamed to admit) I don't remember the theme. ::) I can get the DVD from the library. :)
-
One thing more about "Soul On Fire," most of the audience there LOVED it...or at least acted like they did and I'm sure that it'll be a money-maker for them, which is not a bad thing. Harlequin Productions is probably the best theater company in the area.
