CDs - Wicked, Avenue Q, Stop the World - I Want to Get Off OCR, Children of Eden (Papermill)
All of these acquired in the past 4 days.  Loving Wicked and Avenue Q.  Have wanted STWIWTGO for years, but it wasn't available for the longest time, and then I forgot to keep checking on its availability.  CoE... well... not gonna be one of my favorites, but I need to get familiar with it before I start vocal director work in February.

DVD - Same as last week, The West Wing Season One, disc 2

VCR - Dr. Strangelove

BK - I've always been a fan of the CD's you did with Terry Trotter.  The only recording of Passion that I'll occasionally listen to. :D  I'll admit I haven't heard the Brad Ellis ones... perhaps the next time my budget allows (a long time, I'm afraid).

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]HAPPY BIRTHDAY, EVIL TWIN! :)[/move]

I don't have anything in any media players at the moment.

I shall now continue my story.
Ok, well, Tiff, Mal, and Mike showed up at 7:00. At that time, I also got a phone call from Jeremy, who said he was at work and didn't think he could make it until at least 9:00. He also said if he wasn't there by 10:00, he wouldn't be there. (He never showed up. :()

After more introductions and talking, I told everyone that they could go snack on appetizer-ish food, which had been out there for about 25 minutes. Mike gladly started the line, and dinner was also ready at the time, so soon 12 people were lined up to eat turkey, ham, broccoli and rice, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, rolls, veggies and dip, and a few other items. It was now 7:15, and my mom and I apologized to Drew for not knowing he had to leave early. He said it was fine, and he ate a platter with the group before leaving.

When he had to leave, everyone said goodbye, and I went to get his coat. I let him know that we would still be here at 10:00 (when he anticipated being back home), so he was welcome to come back. He thanked me and said he'd see, but he has a cholesterol test in the morn, so he wanted to go to bed before midnight. Silly boy. Then he opened his arms to give me a hug and went on his way. I turned around to all of my friends giggling and saying, "AWW!" It was...interesting. They always find a way to tease me!

This is a picture of Drew and me. It was one of the few times I was actually just sitting around while he was there. He commented on my pinkness, saying that he often caught glimpses of it out of the corner of his eye as I was flitting by.

Ok, I'll try to make the rest of this quick. After Drew's departure, we finished eating and chatted for over an hour. At around 8:30, I brought out desserts. See, I showed Tiff the cupcakes made especially for her, and when I said I'd put them away until later, everyone insisted that it was just not fair to tempt them and then take the cupcakes away. I agreed, and dessert was served. We had the cupcakes, cookies, and...chocolate fondue(!!!), which they devoured. I also convinced a few of them to go out and buy fondue pots! Hooray for that!

9:00 rolled around, and Cristina and her bro left because Cristina had plans to go see a band. At around 9:30, we relocated to my basement to hang out.

Here's a picture of Mal and me.

Jumping back to something said towards the end of yesterday's posts, I've found this info on ketchup over at FoodTV.com:

Definition: [KEHCH-uhp; KACH-uhp] Ke-tsiap--a spicy pickled-fish condiment popular in 17th-century China--is said to be the origin of the name "ketchup." British seamen brought the ke-tsiap home and throughout the years the formula was changed to contain anything from nuts to mushrooms. It wasn't until the late 1700s that canny New Englanders added tomatoes to the blend and it became what we know today as ketchup. Also called catsup and catchup, this thick, spicy sauce is a traditional American accompaniment for French-fried potatoes, hamburgers and many other foods. Ketchup usually has a tomato foundation, though gourmet markets often carry condiments with similar appellations that might have a base of anything from walnuts to mangoes to mushrooms. Vinegar gives ketchup its tang, while sugar, salt and spices contribute to the blend. In addition to being used as a condiment, ketchup is used as an ingredient in many dishes.

Hmmm, a mushroom ketchup...that would be worth exploring!  Yum!

Anyway the rest of the night was pretty mellow. We just talked and watched tv while some of the girls played Guess Who and Life. Everyone was gone by a little after midnight. Overall, it was fun!

BK: I'll be looking for the series.  I happen to like CMT, although not as a steady diet.  (Don't tell der Brucer, but Trace Atkins makes me go Woof!)

Media Check:

DVD Player: the appendices on Two Towers, Extended.  For some reason, I didn't get to that stuff earlier.

CD player: Just some of the stuff der Brucer and I listened to on our trip.  I'm still waiting for the rest of the stuff to arrive.   >:(

Reading Material:
Fiction: Gregory Maguire's Wicked.  The source for the musical.  I should have read this some time ago.  In fact, I think I pointed it out to BK after one of his readings at Bookfellows in Glendale.  Maguire is a good read; I've heard good things about two of his more recent novels as well, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister and Mirror, Mirror (guess what stories they tell!).

Non-Fiction: The New American Chef, by Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page.  D&P are two of the best food writers on the scene right now.  This time out, they're tackling the key techniques and flavors of ten different cuisines from around the world.  The title is misleading; the book is really about the cornerstones of fusion cooking, the sense being that if a chef/cook doesn't know the fundamentals of the base cuisines, that chef/cook will never create anything worth remembering, and instead serve car wrecks like spaghetti with kiwi sauce.  Lots of interviews with chefs who know their stuff, as usual.

Happy Birthday from OZ Janet. Of course your birthday is all ready been and gone here!
DVD: We watched "The Wizard Of Oz" last. CD: "Wicked". There seems to be a connection there. I recorded (copied to CD) the Fifth Estate's version of "Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead" the other day. Purely a coincidence as it was for the use of Melbourne radio station. Perhaps tomorrow I shall play America's "Tin Man", Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and a song by Toto. I should have no trouble fiding a friend of Dorothy's to share my listening pleasure. All this has no doubt come about by the subliminal message from TCB (see his quote from the Wizard himself).

I'm posting at 3 a.m.... A posting frenzy onto myself. Daughter left about half an hour ago for San Diego. Strange time to travel, you say. Well, if people can go to Walmart at 4 a.m., what's wrong with traveling at 2:30 a.m.? Freeways are clear(er), the night is young. So now I'm on my own again. Free as the birds. What kinds of birds are we discussing here? Because it's quite different to be as free as let's say a crow, from being free as a one-legged parrot. Wouldn't you agree, DR's? (You can tell it's a strange time of night.)
My DVD player is acting erratic, so I have nothing in it. If it were acting erotic, it would be doing kinky things with the TV set.  On my CD player is "Sidney Bechet en Concert avec Europe1" recorded in 1957-58. I think I may try going back to bed now.

BRUCE SAID IN HIS TODAY"S NOTES:

I’ve had fun doing this show and it’s lasted longer than expected, so that’s nice. The show starts airing a week from today on CMT (Country Music Television) – if you get that station be sure to tune in. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?

I thought you were doing Penn and Teller's Bullshit which airs on SHOWTIME. Could the show being aired on CMT be the other show that you did last year and whose title you had never revealed?

BRUCE ALSO SAID IN HIS TODAY"S NOTES:

Has anyone noticed that these here notes are lacking flair?

The reason for this is that you wrote the notes with a Bic Banana.
Title: Re:WHERE IS FLAIR?
Post by: Michael on January 09, 2004, 04:31:22 AM
Which reminds me of a Bic Banana story. (I guess there is a story for everything)

Charles Nelson Reilley played the Bic Banana on a series of commercials through the 70's and I think the 80's.

CNR was on the Tonight Show when Johnny Carson was the star. During one visit the subject of the Bic Banana commercial was discussed. CNR mentioned that he was fired from the commercials. When Carson asked why. He said that "The advertising company said he couldn't play a believable fruit!"

And if anyone asks who Charles Nelson Reilley is don't!!!!!!

He was on Broadway in the original casts of Hello, Dolly! and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and directed his pal Julie Harris in mnay of her recent plays on Broadway and on tour.

On Television he was a regular on The Golddiggers and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir and perhaps most famously as a regualr panelist on Match Game revival.

Now if you haven't heard on any of these shows go do an internet search and look them up!!!!

Happy Happy Birthday to our newest poster/Dear Reader, Miss Evil Twin.

Nothing in the media players at the moment. It's cold in New York this weekend so we will probably watch something in the VCR as the weekend progresses. We don't have a DVD player except for the computer drive so we don't watch much DVD material. I could buy an inexpensive one, but we need a new closet/dresser unit which we will purchase when my tax refund is sent. As odd as it seems, that is more important right now than a DVD player.

OK, here's a picture of Anthony and me at an interactive exhibit in the Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood (Bethnal Green, while still in Central London is just on the border of Zone 2 on the Tube, on the Central Tude Line, the red one). The exhibit focused on the 100th anniversary of the Teddy Bear so we got to join The Teddy Bear Picnic.

We went to the Museum on our second day. We arrived on December 17th (as I mentioned yesterday) at about 8am. We splurged and took the Heathrow Express from the airport into London, arriving at Paddington. We then took one of those great British cabs, which could house a small family, to our apartment. On the way we got a short tour from our wonderful British cabbie. Since Anthony had never been out of the country before, the driver went past some nice places, like the recently refurbished Prince Albert memorial in Kensington Gardens (beautiful) and a short ride through part of Hyde Park. Luckily our apartment was ready when we arrived (the manager had said it might not be) so we could drop our bags and get settled and relax for a few minutes. We were just a block and a half away from Earls Court tube stop and we had unlimited tube passes. I'm going to break this up into smaller posts so we don't have one huge note from moi. Bye for now.

Going by the old way of arrival, as a way to shorten jet lag, we decided to stay up until we couldn't any more. We went to the grocery store, did some sightseeing and then had dinner with a friend of a friend. We stayed up until about 10pm.I'm not so sure that remedy works for me anymore. I don't remember it being so difficult the last time I was in Europe but boy this time by 10pm we could barely walk, let alone stay awake. Unfortunately, when we did we fell fast asleep but both of us woke up around 3:30 in the morning and couldn't get back to sleep. We watched some late night British television (we only had the five basic channels, no cable) and I'm sorry to report that it's just as lame as American late night television.

I was determined, though, to get up on Thursday morning and do something so we could get ourselves on to British time so we went to the Museum and had a great time. These stories are becoming novellas so I'll stop now (at least with London postings) and regale you all later.

I have to find either a tape to put in, a CD to play or a radio station to listen to whilst I work (some of Great Britain remains with me as in whilst).

I'm the only person here. That's why there is nothing between me and the fence post. It's 8:30am in New York. I know why the Left Coasters are gone but where are the others?

I am, BTW, very glad that John Tartaglia and Stephanie D'Abruzzo, from Avenue Q, will both be eligible for Leading Actor/Actress in a Musical categories. Although I don't think John will win. I know it's early in the season, but even though Boy from Oz is not very good in many respects, Jackman is so good in it, and he's charmed enough of the Broadway community, that I think he will probably take the Tony for Leading Actor in a Musical. Just my little prediction on the June horse race. Take it for what it's worth. And now, I promise, I will stop posting, for a while, anyway.

Michael - BK did "Bullshit" last season.  This season he did a reality show for CMT.  I think it was about rodeos but I'm not sure.

BK - Your "Flair" song was very close to a similarly titled Maltby-Shire song from STARTING HERE, STARTING NOW.  Also - with your new schedule, will HHW go back to the old schedule of new notes being posted when you wake up in the morning instead of before you go to bed at night?

CD - Nothing new since WICKED which gives me a chance to catch up on some old favorites.  I'm waiting for some cut-outs I have on order from All Music and also for Footlights to get FIREBRAND OF FLORENCE (Weill/I Gershwin) back in stock.

DVD - Lots here:
*A Richard Rodgers concert with major West End stars including Ruthie Henschell and Kim Criswell.  The highlight: Dame Judy Dench dressed like Baby Jane Hudson singing "I Am 16 Going On 17"!

*The four disc Looney Tunes Golden Collection - People have been complaining about what is not included.  If they included everything here there couldn't be a Volume 2 in the future.  My only complaint: the cartoons are beautifully restored, but many of the extras such as the Termite Terrace documentary are very washed out.  I find this a common problem on DVDs.  Is it that expensive to restore clips, trailers, etc. so the quality matches the main material.

*2 early Mamoulian films: "Applause" with Helen Morgan and Rodgers & Hart's "Love Me Tonight" with Chevalier, MacDonald, Myrna Loy and Little Ricky's babysitter Mrs. Trumball.  Jeanette is a delight when not saddled down with Nelson.  Both films are not only interesting from an historical point of view but damn good entertainment as well.

DR Ben,

Keep the London postings rolling. I'm enjoying them a lot.

And a question (for DR Ben and other DRs). A friend is heading to NYC and can't decide between Wonderful Town and The Boy From Oz. I say he should grab the chance to see Hugh Jackman. Other opinions? Thanks.

DR Dan, they are both usually on the half-price booth so if he can see them both I would say go for it. If he can only choose one, hmmm. Jackman is hot, sexy and funny but Donna Murphy is wonderful, and funny too. Oh, well, I'll go for the sex. See Jackman :-)

Gah, I hate when the automated substitute teacher calling machine goofs up.  I only sub for high school and middle school (by choice), but occasionally the machine will still call me to offer an elementary school job.  It did so this morning at 6:15, and I have been unable to get back to sleep.  Oh well, just an earlier start to what's turned out to be a non-working day than usual.

I have now put the always delightful The First Nudie Musical in the DVD player, and am enjoying the cast commentary track.  If one is gonna be up in the morning, there are far worse forms of entertainment.

It occurred to me that the bottomless well of knowledge that is HHW might be able to help my aging and decrepit memory with something.  I grew up for a few years in Bellevue (the city, not the insane asylum--well, the city anyway) and I have been racking my brain (no easy task) to remember the name of the one and only movie theater that was there in the late 60s and early 70s.  I think it was a guy's name, John something.  Does anyone possibly know this?  TIA.

MATTH - the guys skating last night WAS very sad.  Maybe Weir can get in over Weiss, which would be okay.  But it's too bad that Goebel won't even be on the US team.

Rohene's problems were exactly what Button said, he doesn't have the training regimen - he fell on EVERYTHING he tried.

Here is my take on Goebel - and it's NOT his boots!  I think Frank Carroll has got a new hot skater and is spending a LOT of time with him and Goebel can't take it....he's not the only one on the practice schedule now and it's messed up his head.  These poor skaters taken away from their families bond with these coaches who are there for the prestige and the money and when it's time to move on, they're ready - sometimes the skaters are not....sad sad sad.

DR Ben the London pics are great - and of course you know that Brian Kelly was Jacqueline Susann's personal choice to play Robin Stone in THE LOVE MACHINE, but after he was cast and the costumes made, Kelly got in a motorcycle wreck and was replaced by John Phillip Law.

Nine pages to read from when I went to bed last night at 11pm. :)

Happy birthday to our newest member Janet!

Love the pic DR Ben.

Can't wait to read Laura 2's tales. But I have last night's posts open and this morning's posts open and I have to read last night's adventures first.

But I would like to tell DR Ron that I am not dumb enough to stick my tongue on a metal object in -40C/

Although I was dumb enough to walk for 40 minutes in -20C weather :(

It is still freezing here. I wonder if DR Andrea left her house yet.  I think it is around -35C with windchill and it will remain freezing for at least today and tomorrow.

DR Laura II, I am half way through your dinner party. And I love it. I can't wait to look at the pictures!

Oh and BK: happy last day of work!

And DR Jason: Sorry your co-workers were so mean.

Btw, (not sue if anyone else posted the link) but here are the Tony committee's decisions:

http://web.playbill.com/news/article/83692.html

Personally, I don't think Kristin and Idina will cancel each other out. IMO, if they are both leads in the show (which I think they are), then those are the categories they should be in. I detest, when lead actors, like Kristin, are put in the featured category, when they clearly are not supporting players.

I have not seen Boy from Oz. But when I saw Donna Murphy in WT at MTC, it was one of the best performances I have ever seen.

Btw, DR Ben: I know what you mean about not being able to get used to London time.  On my one and only trip to London (my sister won an all expense paid trip to see Notre Dame De Paris, which was my favorite show), my body could not get used to the time change. I have a very sensitive system, and I literally could not eat anything before the afternoon. I felt sick EVERY single morning :(

Love the london stories too.

Happy Birthday, Evil Twin Janet!!!

Forecasters said we would wake up this morning to a light snowfall. When I got up around 8:30, nothing but wet pavement from a misty rain. As I read my morning newspaper, I looked up and there was the loveliest snowfall you can imagine. It fell for about thirty minutes and thentapered off for an hour and a half. Just awhile ago, it started up again, very light, not enough to cuase any major trouble on the streets and it's accumulating just barely on the lawn. Still, lovely.

Men's final at 4 p.m. EST on ABC

Women's final at 8 p.m. on ABC. Both on Saturday. The dance and pairs will also be shown in taped highlights on those programs.

Yes, I liked Matt Savoie and Jenny Kirk the best last night. I thought their skating had the most flair. Cohen was consistent with jumps but did patented moves with expertise but not elegance. Kwan was lovely, and her little catch on the landing of her double axel was her only misstep, barely a blip on the map of her poise and grace on the ice. Like DR Ron, I do think she's the finest ladies' skater ever with the ability to do difficult jumps, spins, and yet so elegant and balletic. The finals will show us if this new coach she's been working with has instilled in her a more combative jumping program that I think she needs to compete successfully in the technical side of the contest with the other girls.

A wise decision (Hugh Jackman).

BK - Your CD selections made me dig out a remarkable LP that I haven't heard in ages - selections from I Had A Ball played by Art Blakey, Milt Jackson, Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones and Chet Baker. The notes include a cute comment by Walter Kerr: "Buddy Hacket looks like a baked potato out for a short stroll."

Jed and TCB, the Karma Fairy has visited.  For some reason, my sis and I kept thinking it was the John Day Theater, probably because of the dam with the same name.  I have so many wonderful memories of that theater--my sis is almost 11 years older than I, and she was the designated movie-taker for most of my childhood.  In fact, my wife still laughs whenever we get DVDs of my old faves, because I inevitably say "Kathie took me to this when I was (fill in appropriate age here)."

I know what's in my wife's car CD.  HAINES HIS WAY.  She's been singing songs from it all week.  It's the way she learns new tunes.  She'll play it repeatedly until she knows every song on it.  She also keeps praising the impeccable song selections and the arrangements.  So there are your strokes for the day, BK.

In my CD player is a strange compliation album made by my friend, Roger, called the Super-Fantastic Original Corn-Eating Elimination Jukebox and Light Show with Selected Short Subjects #1...containing such odd numbers as What if the Hokey-Pokey is Really What It's All About?; She's Looking Better Every Beer; Wish I Was a Lesbian; Please Take Your Drunken 15-Year-Old Girlfriend Home.

The curious title of this compliation album pays homage to an annual event that started during my years in the theatre department at the University of Kentucky.  A bunch of drunken theatre students were hanging out in the local pub, bragging and betting about what they could eat the most of.  One fellow said he could eat the most corn...and my friend Roger, enterprising soul that he was, became the stakes holder for the wager and Master of Ceremonies for the first Super-Fantastic Original Corn-Eating Elimination Contest and Light Show, with Selected Short Subjects.  I became this event's annual host when I inherited the apartment the first one took place in.  Corntestants were doled out measuring cups of corn onto their plates.  The "Light Show" was always the lightest corntestant to weigh in (and, yes, there was a weighing-in ceremony).  Selected Short Subjects became the various entertainments with which the bystanders entertained themselves when watching people gobble corn for hours on end became rather inervating.  At one point, the various corntestants would break out in song or dance at various intervals as part of the Selected Short Subjects.  This bizarre ritual became an annual fixture every November in the Theatre Department and went on for years after I left.  I think the record may have been 23 cups of corn.  There is a young woman living over in Burbank even as we speak who was a champion of the contest one year, beating the man who became her husband.  It was quite an event...one year we had a masked mystery guest.  One year a contestant brought his own silverware under lock and key and guarded...Ah, memories....

Speaking of the Teddy Bears Picnic, Ben, my friend Roger also once sent me a compliation of about 25 different versions of the song Teddy Bears Picnic, having remembered fondly an old 78 of mine that used to get lots of play in our college days.

I also do as you do when going to London...try to stay up as late as I possbily can that first night, usually till ten or eleven, I've even gone to a show that first night.  Where are you coming from?...From La, it's about eight hours difference.  And I don't sleep particularly well on a plane.  I have learned it works better if one drinks less alcohol on the flight...but it's tough to refuse that free champagne and wine with dinner.

The lag usually hits me around the third or fourth night.  Lurching straight up, wide awake at three in the morning.  Though I've learned to fend it off with naps.  Around three or four, I usually return to the flat and doze for an hour or two before getting up for the night's theatre. And this is pretty refreshing. The last thing I want to do is snooze during a play.

JRand53:  I think you have a very interesting observation on the Timothy Goebel controversy.

It's a controversy because Dick Button was just beside himself trying to find reasons for Goebel's problems, which Goebel calls "boot problems."  He's been through 13 pairs of boots and hasn't been able to skate well with any of them.

It's obvious, I believe, that it's a psychological issue.  And it may well be that Frank Carroll has despaired of Goebel rising to any higher "artistic" heights than his grinning in the "An American in Paris" routine which he skated for the 2002 Olympics, and has used ever since then until the current season.  He may be in a snit over that, too.  Probably thinks it's his signature routine and feels he should be able to skate it forever!

I'm not so in love with the Avenue Q cd.  It's cute, and it's funny, but the music and lyrics just don't stick with me (well, except for Trekkie Monster's changing choruses of "The Internet is for Porn," but I've promised der Brucer that I will only sing those in the shower).  Yes, we played it during the trip east, and I've listened to it maybe three other times, but it's kind of like the difference between Bat Boy and Urinetown, where one is fun but the other is something really worth revisiting (but I wouldn't like to live there).

I don't think there were any surprises in today's Tony decissions.  The big question for the spring meeting --- which could affect every other musical --- will be if ASSASSINS is considered a new musical or a revival.  There are reasons* to support either decision so at the moment none of the current musicals, new or revival, know if they will be competing with this show or not.   I would imagine if it is considered new and Sondheim's score is alowed to compete that the other new scores won't stand a chance, but a lot will depend on the production whether or not ASSASSINS could beat AVENUE Q and WICKED as Best Musical or WONDERFUL TOWN, LITTLE SHOP and FIDDLER as best revival.

* It has never been on Broadway, and its off-Broadway run was very limited, unlike LITTLE SHOP which ran for years, so it could be considered a New Musical like other off-Broadway transfers (most recently URINETOWN).

However it took almost fifteen years to open on Broadway during which time it has played countless engagements throughtout the country and all over the world.  Also this is a totally new production, not just a transfer so it might be decided that it is a Revival.

Good morning everyone!
Well, back at work bright and early this morning.  Quinncy (18 month old) took one look at me and burst into tears when i walked in the door.  What a homecoming :) But I'd expected such a reaction, and after 20 minutes of crying he was back to blowing raspberries on my stomach and laughing, and is now happily cuddled in my lap watching Barney while I type.  Tonight hopefully I shall be heading across the pass to see my dear family in Eburg.  Unless the pass is bad, in which case I won't.

Same thing has been true of many columnists as they aged.

Good morning. Two months ago today I arrived back in LA. Something fabulous is going to happen today. I feel it in me bones.

Panni,
I'm heading out soon to get some lottery tickets for tonight's $17.5 million (Canadian) draw. Give me four or five numbers between one and 47 and, if I get them in time, I'll combine them with my choices. We'll split the prize.

Back from Lunch. I had a over long meeting before lunch so I went home and regressed. Instead of a healthy lunch I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (chunky peanut butter and strawberry jam). At least the bread was whole grain with 3 grams of fiber and I had a glass of decaffinated iced tea and an apple as well.

I will listen this afternoon to the Noel Coward Album (his New York cabaret and Las Vegas acts). He is one of my personal faves. I shall always be grateful to DRs TomovOz and Jason for their help in filling out my CD collection with Mr. Coward's work.

Moitzie - it sounds like a boy's nickname or a term of endearment (a reference to yesterday). "Oooh, you are such a little moitzie" Is it pronounced the way it looks - moytzee?

Dan-in-TO - Great idea! I hadn't thought of the lottery as my fabulous thing for today. Wouldn't it be fabulous?
If you haven't gone for the tickets yet: 4, 8, 14, 17

Mo-tze is the Hebrew (and more familiar pronunciation), moi-tze (not a Chinese philosopher) is the homier, more Yiddish pronunciation. The Cardinal definitely would have used the Hebrew version.

Thanks for thinking of me. Dan-in-TO. My late mother always won something (nothing big, but something) on the Lottery. I have her numbers somewhere, will one day find them and it'll be easy street for me.

Your CJN story was hilarious. They used to do articles about me when I was a Jewish media darling in TO (primarily because of the film CHARLIE GRANT'S WAR until it became controversial) and there were always a few huge errors that would either make me sound like an idiot or horribly insult colleagues in the business. On the other hand, as long as they spell your name right...

Good morning!  Good afternoon!

Well, well, well - that's three "well's"... It's not even 2:00pm here on the east coast, and we're already on Page 5!!!!

CINCO!

-The "ci" is pronounced "chi", like in Italian. - A few years ago, I noticed that I kept saying, "Cinco!" whenever there was something that needed an  exclamation point.  Don't ask... 'Cause I have no idea why I kept saying it, or where I dredged it up from.  -Thankfully, it was a very short phase.  However, today seems like a good to bring it back.. at least for the day, so...

CINCO!

I slept until NOON!!!  That was sooo nice.  The snow started here last night, and there's a nice dusting outside on the cars and trees.  It's been going on and off - according to the weather reports on the news, not my personal observations - and we should only get just over an inch of accumulation.  Thankfully, nothing is sticking to the roads since I have to head out in a little bit to run some errands - as well as get some breakfast/brunch/lunch/early-dinner.

I took my friend, Mark, out to dinner last night at one of the neighborhood restaurants here in the "Fan".  He was having one truly hellish day at work, and since I still need to stock my fridge...  I decided to splurge on a Chicken Parm sub... and onion rings... soooo good.  And for dessert, I stopped at the store across the street and picked up a pint of B&J's Half-Baked... and I only finished off half of it!  -Hmm.. maybe that was why I was feeling a little logey last night.

Then it was back here, reading HHW, and watching some bad movies on cable... I tried my best to stay up for the posting of the new notes, but I think I just missed them by a minute or two.  So...

CINCO!

Laura II--wonderful account of the dinner party, and loverly pics!

I really, really want Donna Murphy to win Best Actress.  Her performance in WT was a marvel.  My second choice is Kristin.  Idina was terrific, and all that...I'm just biased!

And CNR was on the recent released-on-CD-for-the-very-first-time original cast recording of the revue Parade with music and lyrics written by Jerry Herman (not to be confused with the 1999 musical-not-revue written by Jason Robert Brown with Carolee Carmello and Brent Carver).  Both of which I enjoy very much.

Only 14 to go!

I also want to buy a paper shredder today - and get a good start on my "sort and purge" project over the next few weeks.  Like other DRs have stated, I'm not a collector, I just don't throw anything away... And I know there are some things that I should throw out and/or don't need at all.  -I don't think a grocery store receipt for two bottles of salad dressing has any tax and/or sentimental attachment.  Do you?

Maya - Which WILD PARTY, the MTC Lipa or the NYSF LaChuisa?  I have mentioned before that I prefered the Lipa on stage, but the LaChuisa on disc and I'm just curious which version you are listening to.

Jennifer - Under the old Tony rules that just changed last year ASSASSINS would have automatically been considered new because it never played Broadway.  The rules were changed due to FORTUNE'S FOOL, a 100 year old play that hadn't played Broadway before.  Now each old show that has never played Broadway is considered seperately to determine if it is new or a "classic".  Per the reasons in my previous posting it could go either way for ASSASSINS.

Re Liz Smith - I am not surprised that she or her staff made the error.  What surprised me is that someone at her syndicate or one of her client papers didn't catch it.  It isn't like she was writing about totally unknown people.  The error is understandable.  The lack of it being caught by a good proof reader is not.  It is no wonder that the "corrections" listings in the various papers seems to grow on a regular basis.

Actually I was reading an article yesterday that said there are more Subways in Quebec (and i think in canada) than even mcdonalds.

I will agree with that.  Near me we have one Subway at the mall, and like 3 others within a 10 minute drive.

Good afternoon everyone!!!

Sorry for being somewhat e and t of late... life has been getting very chaotic!  Fun and exciting... but definitely chaotic!

Work this morning continued to be a five hour roller coaster ride.  I had to come into the office EARLY, leave LATE and somehow was convinced to go in tomorrow (a SATURDAY!!!).  Oy.  I guess this will any emotional need I have to feel needed for a while ;)

In other news...

It is FE-REAKING cold outside!  Environment Canada has issued an "EXTREME WINDCHILL WARNING"!!

Environment Canada's Official Canadian Weather WarningsMontréal métropolitain-Laval
11:30 AM est Friday 9 January 2004

Wind chill warning for
Montréal métropolitain-Laval continued
Extreme wind chill of -38 to -40 will continue this afternoon over
the above regions.

Moderate northwest winds are occuring over most of Québec. These winds and very cold air are giving extreme wind chill conditions. In the Gaspé Peninsula near the St Lawrence river, cold air passing over waters is causing heavy flurries greatly reducing visibilities.  [/i]

-40c IS COLD!!!

There is a girl sitting next to me in the arts computer centre dry-humping her boyfriend.  I am not exagerrating.

I ate a subway grilled chicken sandwich today instead of a plain veggie one.  It was good and far more filling...

I need to talk with people about my hair some more... and especially those who see me on a regular basis in person - no offence to my virtual hhw hair stylists.  Then, I'll start considering salons I want to try.

This hair thing seems like a lot of work though.   Maybe I should just shave it all.  Isn't lesbian-chic in now? ;)

With all this talk about Mars and the pictures that are coming back, I remember that I got this in an e-mail (hope it entertaining!):

When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ballpoint pens would not work in zero gravity. To combat the problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 million to develop a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to 300C.

The Russians used a pencil.

I have not seen Assassins performed.  But to me the concept of a new musical is something NEW. I would put Assassins in the same category as Little Shop. Just because they haven't played Broadway does not make them new.  IMO, if a show has appeared off-broadway, and has been performed around the country, then it should not be considered a new musical.

That is what I meant by "I can't imagine it up against Wicked or avenue Q".

To me the Tony nom committee has to occasionally adapt the rules.  They shouldn't just put Assassins into best new musical (just because it's never been on broadway) without really considering the issue.

My question though, is what are they going to do?  I'm sure most people in the know must have a good idea. So will it be a revival?

I am ALWAYS "watching" items.  I have lost things so many times before that option was created.  Acutually, I either lost track of or bid on way too many things.  That got to be real expensive.

It is driving me crazy. And I am so stubborn I need to find it.

What happened to NEW option?

Nothing in my DVD player today until the mail arrives with, I hope, a new Netflix.

Funny picture with the clever additions Ben.

Ron I do hope you feel better tomorrow.

Ann that was a sweet homecoming-very touching.

Emily I find long hair much easier than short.  There are more things you can do with it, and on a bad hair day just tie it into a pony tail.

The La Chiusa was just too atonal and weird for me.  Some of it was fine, but I just found it relentless and loud.  I was sitting next to Fred Ebb and afterwards he turned to me and said, "You're not recording this are you?"

I might like the Lippa better if I had seen it - one never knows.

No, if a show opens Off-Broadway and gets good reviews and then moves to Broadway it should of course be considered new (just as Avenue Q will be considered new).  But when a show played off-broadway 10+ years ago or has toured around the country then it doesn't seem new to me.

Maybe I just go with my gut feeling.

TCB, why do you think Assassins should be considered in the new musical category. Is it merely because it has never technically been on broadway?
Title: Re:WHERE IS FLAIR?

I agree with you, DR TCB, about ASSASSINS being considered a new musical. It played two months at the limited seating-subscription selling Playwrights Horizon, never had an open ended run on OR off Broadway, so I think it definitely should be considered a new Broadway musical.

The Tonys are a Broadway award. It shouldn't matter how many other places a show has playedaround the country or around the world. When a musical plays New York for the first time in a venue where the run is open and tickets are available to the general public, that's its debut. Any other New York production could then be considered a revival, but this production never was offered to the public at large nor ran long enough to transfer to a theater where it could have had an open ended run. Therefore, I think it should be considered a new musical to Broadway and have its score considered as a new score.

However, I'm betting now that it won't be, and the score won't be eligible for Best Score either.

Avenue Q by Lopez, Marx and Witty (doesn't that sound like a Communist law firm?)
Peter Pan by James Newton Howard.
A Summer Place by Max Steiner.

The Dick Van Dyke Show, Seasons 1 and 2.
X2
The Searchers

I thought Rent was just a loud La Boheme with singers who could not project their voices and thus needed ugly microphones - and then of course for a major song they had to find a left over form "Hair".

George - That's the first time I've seen the words "Carol Channing" and "drag" in the same paragraph and having nothing to do with each other.

Jen and others -  The Tonys are for Broadway shows only (although that should be changed to include off-Broadway, but where do you draw the line between off and off-off)?  Therefore since ASSASSINS has never played Broadway and never been able to compete for a Tony it should be Tony eligible.  Of course using that criteria, so should LITTLE SHOP.  That's why I have no idea what the committee will say and one reason the Tonys are something of a joke.  LITTLE SHOP stands a better chance in the revival category, and since it will probably tour (and one unstated purpose of the Tonys is to sell tours) that is why it is considered a revival.  ASSASSINS has already played all over, so that would not be a consideration.  As I stated in my original post, there are points to support either position, and that is what has piqued my curiosity.

Maya - As I stated, I liked the Lipa WILD PARTY better on stage but prefer the LaChuisa on CD.  Neither was perfect, and a better show than either would be a combination of the two.  Both shows had great female leads.  I hated Mandy's over-the-top performance in the LaChuisa.  The Lipa was in a much smaller theatre and had a more intimate feel.  Each had great female supporting performances, particularly Alex Korey in the Lipa and Eartha Kitt in the LaChuisa.  I was unimpressed by the choreography in both.  And both were better than the Raquel Welch/Jimmy Coco movie based very loosely on the same "epic" poem.

DR Jane, it is funny, I am exactly the opposite way.  When I had long hair I thought it was much more high-maintenance.  Having the options to do more things with it stressed me out.  Now that it is too short to do anything with, all I have to do is brush it and go. :)

I know I am probably in the vast minority for saying this, but I really enjoyed Rent when I saw the OBC (I have seen other casts that I did not care for at all).  I liked that there was a composer out there trying to incorporate other musical styles into the theatre, and the contemporary update of La Boheme.  It also got a lot of people I know who had never been interested in theatre, interested in it, which I figure is a good thing.

Good afternoon!

I'm ba-ack! Miss me?  ;)

It was very nice driving through the Fan earlier here in Richmond.  All the trees are nicely outlined in snow.  Very pretty.  And there wasn't too much traffic when I was out, so I was able to drive the actual speed limit(!) and take in all the winter wonderfulness.

I made it to Target, and I got my paper shredder.  I went ahead and got the Michael Graves one.  Practical and styilsh!  And cheaper than the last time I saw it on the shelf.  I'll be putting it too good use sometime in the near future - hopefully.

However, DR SWW - I'm not sure if I would use it to shred lettuce.  But, I guess it would be good for a "sandwich shred" like they have at Subway.  Frankly, I would probably use it for pasta since I don't have a "chitarra".  OH! -But the paper-shredder I bought is a cross-cut shredder - so I guess I could use it for slicing sheets of nori for some ochazuke.  Hmm... that would be nice for dinner, and since I have some matcha in my pantry right now...

Jennifer, if you are also going to eliminate shows that have toured all over the country, how are going to decide between tours and shows that open out of town?  Hairspary originally opened in Seattle at the 5th Avenue.  Should it have been eliminated from Tony consideration?  What about Light In The Piazza?  Should it  be considered a revival if and when it makes it to Broadway?

And, the BK connection is far more personal than that, if you catch my drift.

I can't even figure out the personal connection, but I can't focus my eyes today.

The Passion in Jazz CD, as I said the other day, is one of those happy accidents where everything comes together - sound, performance, arrangements and temperament - to create perfection.  I'm told that at the Passion closing night party our
CD is what they played.

The Legrand CD was one I hadn't heard in a while, and while I enjoy it, I had some issues with the production side of it and even with a couple of arrangements.  Time does that, I suppose.  What LOVELY postings today - you're making my last day at this particular job go much faster.

Tomovoz - I'm with you, RENT doesn't do a whole lot for me.  This is based on the recording, as I have not seen it on stage.

Wild Party - I don't know from the Lippa, but I do enjoy the LaChiusa recording from time to time.  More so the first half (or two-thirds) of the show.

I just got it a few weeks ago at Club Price of all places (they had a booth). There I only got a J, a pink heart, and a diamond and purple birth type stones. But last week some women told me about getting charms on ebay. I did buy two there that I haven't received.  My aunt who got a charm watch for X-mas is excited because she won a 50 charm lot on ebay.I cannot wait to see that (even though they will not all be for me).

Perhaps the question of whether or not Assassins should be considered a "new" musical or a revival hinges upon who the producers are.

Case in point: The recent production of Metamorphises originated in Chicago, and was subsequently produced in both Seattle and Los Angeles before moving to off-Broadway.  After considerable success OB, it transferred to Broadway, and I believe won the Tony for Best Play, or was at least nominated.  All through the extended period prior to Broadway, it kept the same basic production team and cast.  It was the original production, and therefor a "new" play.

Case in point: On the other hand, Little Shop of Horrors was originally produced off Broadway, and has subsequently had numerous productions across the country and the world (plus a film version).  The current production is NOT the work of the original production team, nor does it include the original cast.  It therefor should be considered a revival.

I understand that Weidman has done some revisions to the book, and Sondheim loves to tinker with things he's written before.  However, the Broadway staging of Assassins does not involve the original producers, designers or cast.  It has had major productions in several cities, and in some cases more than one per city.  It is no longer the original work.  It is thus a revival.

DR Jane, thank you so very much for the compliment! You are so sweet!

DR Andrea: You're just like my friends! Wah! :)

I have just returned from teaching the voice classes at the academy. The teacher had a migraine, so I, as her assistant, took over today. It was quite fun! I must say, as much as I thought my old teacher was overly strict, I truly learned a lot from her. I was so glad I was able to pass mechanics and techniques along to the kids. Also, my main boss was there, and he was very pleased with my work! I'm glad he trusted me to run the lessons. Perhaps this will also lead to a paying position. (I'm a volunteer.) My main boss and the voice teacher have not seen eye to eye lately, and as much as I like her, I agree with him (boss man). He and the teacher were supposed to have a meeting today, which didn't happen. He has a feeling she may quit because he has a specific idea in mind, and she might not be fond of it. Who knows? All I can say is I saw growth today in the kids, and I'm so proud of them! I know I may be stricter than the regular teacher, but sometimes that's necessary. They used their time wisely today, and it really showed.

I am sorry to say I have yet to appreciate either RENT or ASSASSINS.   :o  But I think I need to see a good production of both before I say I don't like them.  8)

I will say RE:RENT nothing gets older faster than something that's brand new.  I liked AIDA.  ;D

Yes horse racing it is, and that is certainly what makes theatre such a subjective art.  It is also visceral.  I have gone to productions I loved, the people I was with hated them....and vice versa!  I think it also depends on what we bring to the theatre.....our experience and expectation can color what we see and hear.  8)

I got back from lunch about an hour and a half ago.  Anyway, I had the roasted chicken breast footlong (the signs actually say "6 Inch" and "Footlong") on roasted garlic bread.  It was most delish and it was free (thank you stamp cards)!

As for Rent (a.k.a RENT), I really like the OBC.  I also have the OGermanC, but I haven't listened to that in quite a while.  I tend not to "over analyze" a recording or even a show that I go to see live.  I love musical theater and tend to accept things for good or bad.  I also have this annoying habbit of liking things when I get to know them really well.  So if something is pretty bad and I have to learn it to perform it (for instance), I usually end up liking it even if I originally didn't.

Or I could just say that I have low standards.

Well, I thought that I was going to have a nice evening home with my DVD and VCR players, but I forgot (but thankfully remembered in time) that I am supposed to usher tonight (in about 35 minutes, actually) for a touring production of "Le Nozze de Figaro" (the opera). :-\ Anyway, I have to go home and get my white shirt and dark socks so that I'll be appropriately dressed.  I don't know how long the show runs, but I'll check in after it's over...probably very late.

And thanks for the well wishes at becoming the latest in a soon-to-be long line of HHW Gods (consider it to be a generic, gender neutral usage of the word).

Worst show I've ever sat through: DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES...five times! I had a strange love of the show, so I can't truly call it the worst thing I've seen. The Nat'l Tour of BIG was HORRIBLE, as was BOUNCE! (sorry, Sondie...) and TABOO bit the big one. I wanted to leave all three of those, but I stuck it out because as a performer, I don't care how terrible the material is, there's nothing worse than seeing people getting up and leaving in the middle of your performance. It's very disheartening.

I'm now eating McDonald's chicken strips and watching YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES. Soon I shall be cleaning and watching YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES. Sounds fun for a Friday night in the big city, don't it?

They have several versions...some with nuts, some with fruit, some with fruit and nuts, some with caramel... I prefer the plain milk chocolate and the caramel variation.

I'll gladly pay you Wednesday for a Galaxy Bar today! :)

I WANTED to walk out on that Dutch Cyrano - oh, did I want to walk out, but it was opening night and too many people knew I was there (they wanted me to record it).

I DID walk out of that Wizard of Oz thing that played Madison Square Garden - one of the most inept stagings I've ever seen.

Oh, and I'm home.  Always a little sad to say goodbye to everyone at the end of a gig, no matter how silly the show.  Hopefully new gig will be coming soon.  I do think it was a bit short-sighted not to let me see the final show through (although, given the short amount of time I had on it I have it in pretty damn good shape) but they're wildly over-budget and Kimmel doesn't come cheap, oh, no, Kimmel does not come cheap.

It sounds like a pretty bracelet.  I think finding the right charms can become a fun addiction. :)

I've been playing the same numbers in the  Florida lotto since it started.  On my birthday, no less.   I have yet to win anything over $50.00 but I hope that this year will be the big one!

Good evening!

Wow - I leave on Page 10, and I come back to Page 13.  Is that another 400+ post day I see on the horizon?

CINCO!

Well, my dinner tonight consisted of the rest of the pint of the B&J's Half-Baked I bought (and ate) last night.  My breakfast/late lunch was quite filling, and I wasn't in the mood to go out again for some food - and just wasn't in the mood for a full meal.  So... ice cream it was!   ;D

I got some vacuuming done earlier - lots of dust bunnies in the hallway, and I did some scrubbing in the bathroom too.  As for the unpacking and other stuff in my bedroom, I've decided to make that my project tomorrow.  I think the easiest thing to take care of first - and one that will make quite a big difference - will be the bundling of the back issues of all the various magazines in my room: The New Yorker (those special rate subscription offers are just too good to pass up sometimes), This Old House, etc.  I also have tons of out of date catalogs that I need to get rid of.  Thankfully, our local recycling program takes magazines and other forms of glossy paper!  I just need to make a run to the hardware store to get some twine to do the bundling.  There are various piles of stuff around my room, and if I can make some headway with those, then that will be a good start to my "sort and purge" project.

I also gave my new paper shredder a try.  WHEEEE!!  It's fun!  And it really is stylish too!  And I already had my first "oops" - I shredded the envelope I'm supposed to send my payment back in.  Easily remedied.

CINCO!

-Yeah, it's old for me already, too, no more "Cincos!".  Ta-ta.

DR Jason - Well, on my walk tomorrow - between all my bundling and sorting - I will stop by For the Love of Chocolate and see what they have on the shelves.  Hopefully, they will have some Galaxy bars in stock. If not, I'll pick you up a "surprise" assortment of English goodies.

And, I think it was DR George who posted the link about that aluminum foil prank... On the 4:00 news here, they had footage of the prank.  WOW!!!  Those guys were thorough!  Each sheld, each book, each DVD, each pamphlet, his car(!)... and then there was the roll of toilet paper that was wrapped in foil... the actually took the time to unroll a roll and then wrap foil around the toilet paper!  WOW!

Burbank, CA., January 9, 2004 - Five Hollywood classics starring the
incomparable Judy Garland - one of the most talented and beloved stars of the
20th century - will become available on DVD for the very first time April 6 from
Warner Home Video (WHV).

In celebration of its 60th Anniversary, the fan-favorite Meet Me in St. Louis,
nominated for four Academy Awards®, is the main attraction in this collection of
wonderful titles. This Two-Disc Special Edition is the third release to
undergo Warner Bros. Pictures' proprietary "Ultra-Resolution" process, giving
today's viewers the most extraordinary presentation possible for this classic
musical. Meet Me in St. Louis, directed by the great Vincente Minnelli
(especially known for his unique use of Technicolor), has benefited greatly with
an improved fully remastered picture derived from newly-restored film elements.
In addition, the release features a new digital audio track that has been
remixed to Dolby Digital 5.1 from original multi-channel pre-production music
source elements. The DVD contains the original mono track as well. Also
featured is an all-new introduction by Liza Minnelli, daughter of star Judy
Garland and director Vincente Minnelli.

The four other Garland classics, all digitally remastered, include For Me and My
Gal with Gene Kelly, In the Good Old Summertime with Van Johnson, Love Finds
Andy Hardy with Mickey Rooney, and Ziegfeld Girl with Jimmy Stewart, Lana
Turner, and Hedy Lamarr. All five titles are brimming with extra features such
as extensive commentaries, vintage shorts, "making of" documentaries, radio
programs, original trailers and more. Meet Me in St. Louis Two-Disc Special
Edition is priced at $26.99 SRP, while the others are priced at $19.98 SRP.

The Ultra-Resolution Process
The popular Meet Me in St. Louis is presented in Warner Bros. Pictures' dazzling
"Ultra-Resolution," which allows today's viewers to see parts of the images that
were not visible previously and in sharper detail than conventional Technicolor
release prints. Warner Bros. introduced this process with the release of Singin
' in the Rain in the fall of 2002 followed by The Adventures of Robin Hood this
past summer. According to Rob Hummel, Warner Bros. Studios Senior Vice
President of Technical Operations, "'Ultra-Resolution' continues to be improved
each time out and Meet Me in St. Louis is just spectacular."

More than seventy years after the introduction of Technicolor, Warner Bros.
Studios is employing the "Ultra-Resolution" process that begins with scanning
the original Technicolor 3-strip black and white 'records' at extremely high
(2k) resolution. The black and white records are then combined electronically
to create the color images, which are also electronically re-registered,
steadied and cleaned before the final DVDs are produced.

Meet Me in St. Louis

In a role that was one of her favorites, a 22-year-old Judy Garland headlines
this warm turn-of-the-century delight presented for the first time on DVD. Set
in 1903, this captivating musical is a slice of Americana about the Smith family
's experiences during the year of the St. Louis World's Fair. Directed by
Vincente Minnelli (whom Garland married soon after filming, later becoming
parents to daughter Liza), Judy Garland has perhaps never been more winning as
she pines for "The Boy Next Door," comforts seven-year-old Margaret O'Brien
(awarded a special Oscar® as 1944's outstanding child actress) with "Have
Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and whisks along to the clang-clang-clang of
"The Trolley Song."

OH!  And what a lovely evening at HOME I'm having right now...

After my little cleaning jaunt, and then a nice long, hot shower, and my half-pint of ice cream dinner, I settled in front of the TV.  What a nice night of TV so far: "Trading Spaces Family" (with a "nightmare" set-up: Hildy AND Kia!!!), "While You Were Out", a new episode of "Absolutely Fabulous" (finally something on the Oxygen channel I like watching - well, there's also that Talk Sex program - although I prefer the old lady on Leno ;-))

And best of all, I'm breaking in some of the Christmas gifts to myself.  On my feet I'm wearing a pair of red, duck down-filled "foot duvets", and around my shoulders, I have a blue/green/plaid duck down-filled "lap duvet".  -Both from Restoration Hardware.  Very nice and toasty - and perfect for sitting on the couch, with my laptop in my lap, while posting on here on HHW and watching "What Not To Wear".   :)

Hmmm.. Maybe I'll make a hot toddy later!?  Or a hot buttered rum?!?

Hmmm...

The Significant Other and myself went out for dinner at Tucci Benucch, an Italian restaurant at (of all places) the Mall of America, and stayed in to watch the deeveedee of THE MASK OF ZORRO.  The dinner was delicious, pesto chicken linguine; the movie was fabuluous, too...even if the print 20th Century Fox used wasn't exactly top-notch.  But, the movie is so darned fun, I cut it a lotta slack.  Really, really nice Alfred Newman score on this one.  The movie, not our dinner.  That had music provided by Bobby Darin, Keely Smith and Frank Sinatra.  Not too shabby an evening, overall.

Is the dinner break over.  I had a huge Quizno's sandwich, and also a teeny-tiny bag of those chocolate chip cookies (I mean not even two ounces big) and a teeny-tiny bag of those Cheese Nips.  So, I'm deciding if there should be any more food for me tonight.

This is out of context, obviously, and is hysterical when I think of who I thought wrote it before I read the whole thing!

Well of course Hairspray would be considered new since it played out of town to prepare for Broadway (and only a couple months prior).

I would even consider Light in the Piazza new probably because shows do need to work out their kinks.

I do see the point that if the tonys are only for broadway then any show not having played broadway should be considered new.  But I still feel the way I feel.

Btw, one thing I detest is when producers of the shows decide which category their show should be in based on which category they could win.

DR Jane: Yes I am having fun with the bracelet. But I need more charms.

DR Andrea: Does this mean that you and CYGOPP are back together?

DR Emily: I will definitely check out that Wicked special on A&E.

And re: Rent: Is it a young thing?  I suspect more young people might like Rent (although my parents loved it, and my dad doesn't usually warm up that much to gay themes).

Question: Does anybody here who SAW the original broadway cast hate rent?  I just cannot imagine it.  The show with a regular cast is good. But the OBC was literally so much better. I was practically in tears. And my favorite was the sexy Jesse L. Martin.

If the ushers wear only a shirt and socks at George's opera house, I'm thinking opera must be a very popular art form in his home town.

DR Jennifer - Kudos to you with your diet!  I wish I could stick with mine right now, but something in me just doesn't want to do it right now.  Thankfully, I have not put back all the weight I lost over the past year, and I do have the "feeling" that I never will.

I guess my body and my mind knows that I will be going to NYC next week.  And while in NYC I will eat.  And not always things from the "approved" list.  So, why be "good" know, when it's all going to go out the window next week.

And one of my big motivations are those five pairs of really nice, sort of pricey, pants I bought in August.  I WILL FIT INTO THEM - AGAIN!

I know how you feel, Jose.  I started the GREAT diet this week.  Thought I was going to die of hunger a few times but as you can tell, I managed to survive.  Haven’t lost an ounce as far as I can tell either.  How disappointing.

The only advise I can give to you, Emily, is to let things cool off a bit but if you find you were a bit harsh or wrong, don’t be afraid to say your sorry.  If it’s a good friend, you will get past it.

I had to say I was wrong today regarding the XX and OO's.  It seems I've been wrong all of my life.  I was being kissed when I thought I was hugged and hugged when I thought I was kissed.

Yes, that was the episode I watched tonight.

Kia's TV room:  It wasn't bad except for that "horrid neon yellow paint" - although I think it was more like "horrid neon lime green paint".  ;)  I also had to question the choice of the pattern on the curtain sheers - looked kind of jungle-themed, I think.  And those industrial-velcro-ed mini-football "finials".. hmm....

Hildy's Kitchen:  It was very nice.  I think the paint effect could have been a bit more finessed - I would have gone for more of a lined effect, maybe something "combed".  But it was a nice room.  However, I would have liked to see a close up of the finished refrigerator - something tells me that spray epoxy, black finish is not so nice close up.  But, again, it was a nice room.

The big problem with Hildy, Kia, etc... Yes, some of the rooms are very nice.  But do they really fit with the rest of the house?  Sometimes they do.  Sometimes they don't.  Even Hildy's kitchen, you could tell that it did not "flow" with the immediate area - I wonder if the producers purposely kept the lighting in the surrounding rooms dark.  But then again, that's not the purpose of the show.  They do a room.  Not a house.  Ah, well...

My friends in Richmond are supposed to get their houses/rooms "Trading Space-d" this spring.  The excitement is mounting!

I haven't weighed myself this week. I don't think I"m back at what I was at. Although I feel like I should be. Does that make sense?

Exercise, I discovered, is what really does it for me - really helps me.  Even though the scale says I may not have lost weight, the way my clothes fit does.

-And this may be old news to some DRs - But a few years ago, I found that I really like running.  It's gets addictive at times.  Of course, now that's it winter, and cold outside.. And I hate running on a treadmill.  So...

In any case... Yes, I'm feeling a little bad about not being "really healthy" right now, but I'm not feeling bad about myself.  And, in the end, that's what really counts.

And, I do "know" that I will lose some more weight this year - it's just a matter of when.  I just woke up one day last year - well, about a year and three months ago - and said to myself, "Today's the day."  I'll be having another one of those mornings sooner rather than later.

The most fantastic part of those Garland/DVD press releases is that the wonderful John Fricke is involved in running commentaries on two of the films and does intros on the others. This man is a walking Garland expert, and his commentary on THE WIZARD OF OZ laserdisc deluxe set was MORE than worth the price of that set. I was devastated that it wasn't ported over to the DVD release, but these new commentaries he's providing are what I'm MOST looking forward to.

And that Warners remastering process can't help but improve MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS which I don't think has ever really shown up brilliantly on home video. Those colors have never looked as vibrant and rich as you know they are capable of looking in Technicolor. This should really be a DVD to treasure.

I had some surprisingly good food at the Mall of America the one time I was there.  I was on tour, and we had an overnight stop in the Twin Cities, so most of us ended up spending a full day at the MoA.  And I actually walked the whole mall!  -Once you realize that a lot of stores have multiple locations in the mall, the whole mall is somewhat more manageable.  But back to the food...

The fast food and counter service outlets were very good - I guess the high turnover rate helps.  Fried cheese curds!!!  However, the one sit down meal I had - with a group of my tour mates - was just OK.  It was in that themed restaurant where each room is a different "atmosphere" - water, jungle, etc.  Atlantis, I think.  *I just check the MoA website, and none of the restaurants listed ring a bell, so maybe it's gone now.  We were in the jungle room - African savannah - I think.  The food was good, but from all the menu descriptions, the long lines and wait, and the prices, I expected a lot more.  It just seemed like home cooking on really nice plates with frou-frou garnishes.  I specifically remember the mushroom risotto - made with plain ole button mushrooms, and, some very "american" looking arborio rice.  Even the rest of my group was a little underwhelmed.  However, the cocktails were served in big glasses.. and were quite strong!

Quick poll.

What was the worst musical you ever sat through or walked out on?
Der Brucer and I walked out on two, back to back!

The first was a production of No No Nannette at the Long Beach Civic Light Opera.  Horridly conceived, with a color scheme that somehow blended aqua, burgundy, and peach.  Not to mention that the show itself is one of the lamest ever given a major revival on Broadway; I'll never figure out how it became a hit.

This was followed, the next night, by a show called Fashion at the Alex Theater in Glendale.  It was a show that had been mounted rather quickly, as the funding for the production originally planned for that slot in the subscription series had fallen through.  Therefor, it was done on one set, with all the actresses in modern dress, although the play itself was set in a much earlier era.  It was so bad that der Brucer's snoring sounded better than what they'd given Dale Kristien to sing!  Amazingly, a cast album was made, particularly since the show sunk the production company affiliated with the Alex at the time, and almost sunk their other venue, the Pasadena Playhouse!

Now, I'll admit, I was going through a serious bout of depression at the time, but let's face it, if a musical can't lift my spirits, then there's something really wrong with the musical.  As it was, the depression gave us both a good excuse to head for home early.

 :P

The show I think I least enjoyed as an audience member as a kid was I HAD A BALL. I didn't.

As an adult, I didn't find a local production of BUBBLING BROWN SUGAR very entertaining. That book was really terrible, and not all of the talent could handle the songs they were given.

As for Broadway musicals as an adult, I really didn't think STARLIGHT EXPRESS was worthy of Broadway. I was delighted that even after a two year run, it lost millions and millions of dollars. It didn't deserve to make money.

RENT was so loud it gave me a horrendous headache, and much of the music just wasn't for me. But it's had a long, long profitable run, so obviously I'm in the minority.

Hey, Borodin won as Best Composer for KISMET and T.S. Elliott won two Tonys for score and book for CATS, both gentlemen having long since left this earth when they won their coveted awards.

Which proves just how absurd Tony awards can get.  Mr. Borodin had nothing to do with the Broadway production of Kismet (other than have his previously composed music adapted for it) and Mr. Eliot had nothing to do with the Broadway production of Cats (other than have his previously composed poetry adapted for it.)

Last I checked, Mr. Sondheim set out to create a work called Assassins, and Mr. Puccini set out to create a work called La Boheme.  Both works have appeared in numerous productions in numerous locations.  (True, one of them has had considerably more productions than the other.)

I'm not trying to give you a hard time here, Dear Reader MattH.  It just seems funny to me that the Tony committee sometimes believes that if it didn't happen on Broadway it didn't happen.

DR Michael:

Ultra resolution is a means of processing so that the image is extra sharp, deeply focused, and almost totally free from blemishes.

Some people don't like it becuase they think it robs the image of looking like film and makes it appear too digital.

I think it's smashing. SINGIN' IN THE RAIN is eye popping.

I still can't get away from the availability of any audience in NYC to have seen these other shows whenever they happened to come around. ASSASSINS has never played but a single two month date (more a workshop in progress thing) in New York.

Since the Tonys ARE a Broadway award, the fact that it has or hasn't played a major date in the city IS precisely the point.

However, I can see the other side. I'm not stubbornly trying to play devil's advocate here. Like WEL, there are logical arguments for both sides. And I also said that I'm predicting now that the Tony committee will side with those who want it treated as a revival. They now have three viable candidates for the Best Score Award: AVENUE Q, WICKED, and TABOO. They don't need ASSASSINS to fill out the category, especially if BOMBAY DREAMS does indeed open during this season as expected.

RE: RENT - I like the show a lot.  Not love the show.  But I was moved, and find a lot of the material very catchy for lack of a better word.  However, I do have some friends who memorized every single lyric and guitar lick as soon as the OCR was released.  That being said...

The original cast was special.  They had been through so much with that show - including, unfortunately, the untimely death of Jonathan Larson (when is death ever "timely"?).  Subsequent casts, more or less, had to fit the mold of their predecessors.  Alas, most shows are "forced" to do that - they want to try to maintain as "consistent" a show as possible for anyone coming to the show for the first time - or the fifth.

*And the last time I saw it - which was about two years ago - I also left the theatre with ringing ears.  Just way too loud - and louder than the last time I saw it.  I remember the "re-review" of RENT that Ben Brantley did last year(?) - he commented on the "noise level" too.  Said it was an injustice to the show, the lyrics of Mr. Larson, and the memory of Mr. Larson.

*I also got distracted by the film at the end... hey, that's not the current cast in that footage?!?!?  ;)

I also thought the original cast of Miss Saigon, at least Jonathan Pryce and Lea Solanga really had it.  The strength of their performances really held together what was, imho, an overblown production of a really small story.  Yes, the historical setting was/important, but it tended to overshadow the personal relationship between The Engineer, Kim and John.  -And the helicopter wasn't really that big a deal.

DR Jose, we had the same reaction to MISS SAIGON. I think I would have liked it much better and it would have moved me much more had it been done in a small house rather than the monstrous Broadway with that overblown, sometimes ludicrous production. For someone who really liked the score of LES MIZ, I did not warm as much to MISS SAIGON's score.

To be pedantic, Kimlet was Tony Walton's name for me - it's what he called friends - Jane Krakowski was Kraklet.  It became our designation for dear readers of this site, they were either Hainsies, after Guy Haines, or Kimlets, after me, or both, after both.

. . .and the man that coined the moniker Kimlet, is the personal tie BK has to my/Evil Twin's photos on the set of A FUNNY THING. . .FORUM.

And DR Tomovoz, I should think that at your age (which is after all, roughly mine) YOU HAVE BEEN KISSED BACKWARDS. . .and if you haven't, get over here, and I'll show you how's it's done.   ;)

As for shows that I've walked out of...

I think I've only left one... maybe two.. but only one I can remember.  I think it was called Liberty Sings - or America Sings.  It was a revue of songs about America and the American experience.  If I remember correctly, it originated in Philadelphia - I saw it at the Kennedy Center's Terrace Theatre in Washington, DC.  It was OK.  I was with a friend.  It was my friend who wanted to leave at intermission.  I had paid good money for the ticket, I wanted to stay.  He wanted to leave.  He drove, so..  But I didn't mind leaving, so..

Otherwise, I stick it out.  The one show I was really tempted to walk out of was Shogun - The Musical during it's pre-Broadway run at the Kennedy Center.  If people thought it was bad when it was in NYC.. WHOA!!  I truly felt bad for some of those actors on stage - and I knew some of them!  And the leading man, Peter Karrie, I believe, was just not up to snuff.  -He was replaced by Peter Casnoff in NYC - whom I would have liked to see.  The whole show was one big collective rip-off of all the mega-musicals that came before it.  At least June Angela got a Tony nom for her work.

*Funny thing, whenever I pay full-price for something at the Kennedy Center - play, musical, concert, recital , etc. - it usually turns out to be a less than thrilling experience.  However, the comps, half-pricers and gift tix, tend be very pleasant surprises.

I just discovered something wierd.  Willy Russell's Blood Brothers has had no less than eleven cast recordings.

Der Brucer and I saw the London revival, with Kiki Dee.  Loved her, but the material was wreched.  Still, it was a hit.  Personally, I thought it was far too class-concious, using that distinction as the sole excuse for the poor brother's failures and unwilling to accept free will as part of his fate.  Talk about a loser mentality, sheesh and blech.

Our evenings are taken care of with shows, but the days are still more or less up in the air.  Any NYers - or been-to-NYers - have any suggestions for what to do next week?  Any "can't miss" exhibits at any of the museums?  Is there a new store or boutique worth checking out just for the curiosity factor?  Any great little restaurant or food stand to try out?  I'm doing some reading up now, but any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

In re Light in the Piazza, according to the story here (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/83722.html) much of the Seattle is continuing for the Chicago run.  This would make it consistant with my "new musical" boundaries, should they continue on to NYC.

My sister bought two couches (actually, I think two love seats) for her new house, but it's still being built.  Won't be done for three more months.  So, since I have a spare bedroom, I have to store the couches for her.  So, I have to clean up and get things out of the way (especially in the hallway leading into the room) for when she and her boyfriend bring them over in the morning.

George - Victoria Clark was absolutely fantastic in the show.  Kelli O'Hara and Celia Keenan-Bolger were quite good as well.  I thought Patti Cohenour was a bit underused.

I was thrilled to get to see the show in June.  I was in Kirkland earlier in the day for a job interview, so I got a $10 student ticket just a day or two beforehand.  Ended up being front row dead center (I'd never choose front row, but it was just fine and/or dandy).  Due to the Intiman's layout, the set and the staging, this meant that Victoria Clark sang a couple songs not 2 feet from me... quite a thrill, that.

Having listened to Avenue Q quite a bit this week, I'm having to restrain myself from commenting on Jose's hand problems from computer work.

My, my, my... How very TCB-like of you!

Response #2 -

Hey, but that would be my left hand then...

Eight posts in 20 minutes Jed. Possible, but please don't stoop to vanity.

Fear not, Tom, I will not enter HHW Heaven with vanity posts, but I will probably respond to more things than I usually would. :)

Perhaps DR Jose will refrain from whatever he is doing and give you some stimulation to achieve the goal Jed.

Wasn't I going to stop posting?

Oh, did you know that a proper Swedish smorgasbord has three stages?  Herring, gravlax, potatoes; then cold meats; then hot meats - bring on those Swedish meatballs!

Things you learn on late night TV!

Now, Tom, I thought we'd gone over this with your serenade offers.  ;)

Has anyone else made the long journey through the archives to read the posts of the first few months? I keep meaning to continue the quest to find my first post. I think it may have been early March before I "found the way".

I'm not going to argue about the helicopter (like the score, never saw the show), but if you want to talk about over-hyped effects, I have never seen the chandelier in Phantom of the Opera when it didn't seem like a joke.  I really love the show, but that is the big effect that everyone always talks about???

DR Ann is missing again. Perhaps she is having that "rent growth" removed surgically.

I believe DR Ann is visiting home to show off her tan lines this weekend after her long Hawaiian excursion.

Well.. I guess I have been quite the Posting Paulie today (as opposed to a Chatty Cathy)...

Guess I'm making up for my most likely errant and truantness next week when I go to NY.  OH, and speaking of NYC....

And the night????

IMHO the Helicopter gave the show publicity. It wasn't significant in any other way. In Phantom I always thought the "floor candles" were a better effect than anything else. I still prefer the storyline of the Yeston version and the humour in the Ken Hill version.

I agree about the chandelier... there it goes... it's still going... and going... ok, almost there...

However, a friend of mine did the show in Germany, and he told me that the chandelier practically free-falls there.  The theatre was built for the show, so.. In any case, he said it falls much faster then it does in London or on Broadway... Oh, and on the road...

-It's still going...

As are you, Dear TCB!

How did your murder mystery go tonight?
I'm still waiting to hear from DR Evil Twin as to how her performance went. . .

Actually, the murder mystery was  quite a hit tonight.

I agree 100%, Tomovoz.  The floor candles are a more interesting visual than the chandelier.  Haven't seen Miss Saigon, so I can't really comment on the helicopter.

And the night????

DR TCB - I quote myself:

"Our evenings are taken care of with shows..."

And to be more specific: Urinetown, Avenue Q, Wicked, Caroline, or Change, and Hairspray.

Or were you talking about after the shows? ;-)

I only saw ALW's PhantomOTO and Miss Saigon once each and I was more impressed with the floor candles than either the chandelier or the helicopter.
