Well, you've read the notes, the notes walked through here like it were a public convenience, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently boogie-boarding in Santa Moonica.

My mom sent this to me. It looks photoshopped but here are a whole series of photos of this tiger mom interacting with her surrogates, so I think it's real. Here's the story---maybe some DR's remember it:

In a zoo in California, a mother tiger gave birth to a rare set of triplet tiger cubs. Unfortunately, due to complications in the pregnancy, the cubs were born prematurely and due to their tiny size, they died shortly after birth.

The mother tiger after recovering from the delivery, suddenly started to decline in health, although physically she was fine. The veterinarians felt that the loss of her litter had caused the tigress t o fall into a depression. The doctors decided that if the tigress could surrogate another mother's cubs, perhaps she would improve.

After checking with many other zoos across the country, the depressing news was that there were no tiger cubs of the right age to introduce to the mourning mother. The veterinarians decided to try something that had never been tried in a zoo environment. Sometimes a mother of one species will take on the care of a different species. The only orphans" that could be found quickly, were a litter of weaner pigs. The zoo keepers and vets wrapped the piglets in tiger skin and placed the babies around the mother tiger. Would they become cubs or pork chops?

Take a look...you won't believe your eyes!!

A friend is turning 50 on Sunday and he, another friend and I are having a leisurely dinner in the Gayborhood this evening. We will walk from 14th Street to 23rd and decide where to eat and then we will saunter down to the Village and finish the evening with some of the best ice cream in the city at Cones (I can't find a Web site).

Anthony is meeting with another friend tonight so he will be busy as well.

The rest of the weekend is open with no firm plans.

My brother is coming for a visit (I may have mentioned that earlier in the week) on Wednesday. He comes in on Wednesday afternoon and leaves very early on Sunday morning. The plane takes off at 8am from Newark so he will need to leave Manhattan early to get to the airport and then through security. He's not a morning person so I fear I will need to nudge and push to get him up and out.

Edi, the package arrived yesterday! What a treat. The card was also very funny.

Now that I have your address I will send you the 3 CDs of my work on Radio Wales.

I'm working on Volume 4 right now and it should be out by the end of the summer. That sounds like I'm having it professionally done but the studio is our bedroom.

I just sent a package of new reviews to Showtime so I should be back on the air sometime soon.

TOD -

CD player - Return to Oz.  I remember the film, and can follow the story with the music.  Mostly.

DVD - der Brucer is the one doing most of the watching.  He's added Godspell, Jesus Christ Superstar, and season one of Kyle XY to the stack.

Books - I'm more than halfway through bruce d. mcclung's Lady in the Dark - Biography of a Musical, and am finding it a fascinating read.  I've dipped into Ethan Mordden's All That Glittered, and Armistead Maupin's Michael Tolliver Lives has arrived - that is going to have to wait, because I'm bound to read it in one gulp.

I'm finishing yet another bio of Ivor Novello. Earlier in the year we went through a spate of reading about Novello. Anthony finished the last book a while ago but I hadn't had a chance to start it. Even though I know the material very well it's still a good read. I love Novello!

I survived yesterday.

It wasn't starting work at four in the morning that was so strange - it was arranging my sleeping schedule that was difficult.  I wasn't able to get enough sleep before the shift, and was really groggy by the end of it.  Then I had trouble napping after der B got me home (it was drizzling, and he didn't want me to melt).

I had a good night's sleep after he took me out to dinner, though, and feel fine now.

And that's enough of today's ego post.

Here is a link to youtube with one of the most infamous routines with Christopher Seiber (spamalot) and his partner Kevin Burrows.

You will probably have to sign in to view it as it considered adult viewing and agree to view its contents. But give it a try.

Good morning all!
Loads of dvds this week, but last night was CAN-CAN.  Love the arrangements of the Cole Porter songs and Hermes Pan's choreography and it is quite colorful.  I prefer MacLaine's Irma to her Pistache, though.
In the supplemental features there are great silent clips of Gwen Verdon in the original Broadway production.

DVD:
FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS
LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA
STANDING ROOM ONLY - SHIRLEY BASSEY
DIVAS ARE FOREVER - SHIRLEY BASSEY.

CD:
DROWSY CHAPERONE
MICHAEL BUBLE - CALL ME IRRESPOSIBLE
MOSTLY MERCER

BOOK:
THE LIST OF SEVEN - Mark Frost.  Arthur Conan Doyle tackles an evil case in London.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And I've been up for a while playing host.  I ground the beans, I made the coffee.  I toasted the bagels, I made some eggs.  Etc., etc., etc.

My friends, Mike and Linda, have just headed down to Rockefeller Center, where they're going to do Top of the Rock.  And then from there, they're going to head down to the West Village and start working their way back east to Chinatown in time to catch their bus back to Richmond this afternoon.  And it looks like they got another nice day today for walking around the city.  It was great seeing Mike again, and meeting his friend - and now mine - Linda.  Depending how the timing works out, I may meet them in SoHo for lunch later on.  We'll see.

Now I am jaded about Xandu

The actor that "injured" himself is being replaced by Cheyenne Jackson the star of All Shook Up.

MMMMMMM a relatively well known "star" replacing another relatively well known "star" who would have thunk it.

It one of the understudies remained in the lead and they got another actor to replace him then it wouldn't have made me jaded.

The one on the left looks like a wax figure from Madame Tusseaus!

Since to see you back TD

Well, that's not a wax figure from Madame Tussaud's.  Although, I guess you could say the Ms. Worley is very well-preserved in a sense.  As well as a very nice and gracious lady.

Umm.... Yes, you're still jaded.  Although, I think presumptuous is a more appropriate term.

Cheyenne did the workshop last year of Xanadu.  And if this was in the works, I have a feeling that Cheyenne would have "miraculously" learned all the new material and roller-skating "overnight" and would be going on sooner than next week.

And in the Broadway world, isn't everyone a "relatively well known star"  -At least to people who actually keep track of the names in the Playbills.

Now... If something were to happen to Kerry Butler in the next few days, and Jane Krakowski suddenly stepped back into the role, well...

For now, just let the show open officially.  Remember, Broadway - and theatre (and film, etc.) is a form of entertainment.  You're either on the stage (or off the stage, or in the pit, or in the flys) or in the audience.  It's not a spectator sport.

Cody [a chocolate lab] is visiting us for a while.  His sniffer is mighty powerful.  When we're out for a walk, it sounds like a pneumatic piston!  Very funny.

Unfortunately, he has severe hip dysplasia.  He's not in any pain right now, but at some point he's going to need a double hip replacement, and his owner can't afford the medical bills, OR the time to invest in six months of slow, painful recovery.  Very sad!  I've heard of programs with veterinary schools where they'll perform such operations for free, as a learning experience for their vet students, but the owner then doesn't get the dog back...it's adopted out.  Still worth investigating, I guess, if it saves the dog!

Someone yesterday posted a news item/slide show about Broadway Bares.
Here is a link to youtube with one of the most infamous routines with Christopher Seiber (spamalot) and his partner Kevin Burrows.

You will probably have to sign in to view it as it considered adult viewing and agree to view its contents. But give it a try.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=DDPy_FBdw7s

A few years ago, someone put together an amazing multi-camera version of this routine.  Even cleaned up the picture and sound a bit.  Quite a nice piece of work.  Kevin showed it to us at a cast part down at Arena.  Even he and Chris were amazed at how good - and hot(!) - the video looked.

-And if I'm remembering properly, I believe Kevin is still out on the road with the Spamalot company, and Chris is about to go back into the Broadway company for a bit now that he's back from London.

Good morning, DR TOMovOZ.

DR JOSE - will your name be in the Playbill?

Nope.  But, again, as long as my name is on the check... :)

You'd be amazed at the amount of subs and subbing that goes in Broadway pits.  -Even in symphony orchestras from time to time.  If the producers were required to list everyone who covers a particular book, that would be quite a listing!  Some chairs have three to four people "covering" the book.  Heck, I'm #14 on the Mamma Mia! list here in NYC.  However, it's always good to have the depth in your coverage.

Now, if someone else were to leave the pit, and I get to take over the book, well, then I'd get my name in the Playbill.

Alas, Cones does not have a website, but they are listed over at MenuPages.com:

Now I had read BK's review of REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE a few days back, and though it made it quite clear that there were some strange goings-on, nothing could prepare me for just how INSANE the movie is. It was cool to see the urine-tinted cut on TMC. I found Liz Taylor quite attractive throughout. I wonder how somebody thought they could make a successful movie out of that material though.

Good morning, all!  I slept late again, and that's good because next week my colleague Tom Murray rejoins me for work on THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER, and if the office is going to move, then it's another busy week.  This afternoon I have an MRI at 6:15; I'm having troubles again with cervical discs and it's affectng my right arm.

Today, I shall transcribe all of my notes from yesterday's NYPL trek, and then I may continue with the Second Season of THE CLOSER.  So far, my favorite episode is the body in Provenza's garage. The two detectives caught in the middle are such naughty boy scouts in deep trouble with their den mother and it's so funny.  I saw another friend's name in the credits - Conan McCarty - but I saw him once in a sequence and don't recall his saying anything during the episode! I suspect he was cut in edits.

TOD:
DVD: THE CLOSER Season 2, POPULAR, Disc 6, UPSTAIRES DOWNSTAIRS Season 4
CD:  THe Firebrand of Florence, June Bronhill, Guy Haines, Tales of Hoffmann
VCR: Hmmm, what will it be this week?

I hasve two books on Novello, but I honestly don't knpow where they are at the moment! One's mostly photographs with a bit of text and the other's a rather cautious biography from the early 1980s, as I recall.

I looked on Amazon.com and there are a couple of new ones, one by James Harding - might be a reprint - whose books on Brithish musicals after Sir Arthur Sullivan, French operetta, and Jacques Offenbach I recommend highly.

The first couple of seasons, which I watched regularly.  After that, I was rather apathetic.  I think part of it was the raving cult status, and one of my best friends was an insane cult member, and a feeling the show was too caught up in its own importance, which is why I became disenchanted with SIX FEET UNDER as well.

Friday morning greetings!  I'm working a shortened day today (leaving at 4pm) and taking tomorrow as a vacation day.  My sister and her husband are coming from Michigan, their daughter from Illinois, and my cousin from Georgia, so there will be much family time.  My niece is staying at our house, I think (the guest room is ready...)

TOD - CD(car) - audiobook, These High Green Hills, by Jan Karon.

With all the relatives in town, there probably won't be time for much else this weekend.

Title: Re:BUT ENOUGH ABOUT ME

The first couple of seasons, which I watched regularly.  After that, I was rather apathetic.  I think part of it was the raving cult status, and one of my best friends was an insane cult member, and a feeling the show was too caught up in its own importance, which is why I became disenchanted with SIX FEET UNDER as well.

I'm sorry that other people spoiled it for you.  I was spared that "association" with others.  I did find a group on the internet (in a film music forum) with whom I could trade observations, thoughts, etc.   And I was amused to read that some rather scientific minds were intrigued by the show.

I always had the sense that Joss Whedon and his writers knew exactly what the show was and never deviated from it...and that was part of its appeal for me...that it didn't cop out and that it delivered the goods week after week.

The third season was the show's very best, IMO.  All the seasons, though, were well above -- in quality and interest -- most other TV shows I've seen.

And then there were those wonderful vamps...Angel, Spike, Darla and Druscilla! And, later, Harmony!

RE: SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE

YESTERDAY'S RESULTS SPOILERS*
*
*
*
*
*
*

I think it's okay that they are being voted as couples. They will change partners soon (and they change styles weekly). I also like that the judges make the final call (the audience votes for the 3 lowest couples and the judges vote out one girl and one boy).

If you're partner is popular then i think it can really benefit some people.

Okay now for last night.

I was not really happy with the results.

I didn't like/agree with either the boy or girl the judges voted out.

I guess though you really have to look at wednesday night's performance. And then also look at the solo performance (i don't like the solos).  And if you only look at these 2 things then i guess they made the right choice.

Personally i thought cedric (hip hop dancer with faina) was the best by far. He was great in his couples dance on wed. And his solo was fantastic. so to me he had to be safe.

As for the other two (ricky and dominic). Well i agree that dominic (break dancer) was better on wed. Although he wasn't great. I just think that ricky and ashley were at a huge disadvantage. They were not given a good style of dance. And their choreography (given) was not good. So i didn't think it was fair to get rid of them. I think ricky had much more potential than dominic. And he did do his best on wed. So i would have kept him.

But i guess if they were going solely by wed night and solo. I get why they got rid of ricky. But i don't agree.

As for the girls, i really dislike faina (sp?) and i also wasn't crazy about the first girl (sorry i can't remember her name, she was the disco one with dominic). I really liked ashley and think she is a very good dancer. But again they were only going by wed night and the solos. So i see why the ditched ashley. But there is no way those other 2 girls are going to progress in this competition. And it wasn't like either did that well on wed (faina really struggled).

It just felt like it wasn't ashley's fault at all. She was given such average choreography while others were given brilliant work. I feel like the judges should make sure all the choreography is above average. So that really good dancers (who could have gone far) are not at a disadvantage.

I would have gotten rid of dominic and his partner. But i would not have cared if faina left. She just rubs me the wrong way.

Now that I have your address I will send you the 3 CDs of my work on Radio Wales.

I'm working on Volume 4 right now and it should be out by the end of the summer. That sounds like I'm having it professionally done but the studio is our bedroom.

Hurrah! Did Ant get to see the Morelli photo yet? Wouldn't his gangster lineage automatically qualify him to play a gangster/pastry chef?

I'm sure there are filmmakers who can also claim that "the studio is our bedroom". Does that mean you can write it off? Is this where the term "laying down on the job" originated?

I'd definitely see it again as well. I've only managed this feat twice in my life, which is to go and see a movie before I knew ANYTHING about it. Someone told me I should see "Once." I said, "Tell me nothing. I'll see it tonight." I took my glasses off in the lobby and everything to avoid learning anything. I didn't know if it was a murder mystery, romance, anything about it. So that was cool. But I'd love to see it again.

The other time was with The Sixth Sense, and that paid off nicely as well.

Of course it doesn't come out till November.

Is that the one about how the Navahos navigated Nevada?

I would think that there was far more "lively" scenery to gander at whilst running around the reservoir than mere magazine covers.

I saw another friend's name in the credits - Conan McCarty - but I saw him once in a sequence and don't recall his saying anything during the episode! I suspect he was cut in edits.

What scene was he in?

I'm loading the 5th episode of the 3rd season...French Stewart is a guest star. Very funny!

Although, most of time, I usually only get to spy their calves and, well, you know... glutes.  ;)  However, there are those who choose to run clock-wise around the reservoir, "ignoring" the signs that say to run counter-clock-wise.  :)

My "old" theatre group has a new west coast premiere:

FIVE COURSE LOVE (http://www.presstelegram.com/entertainment/ci_6122718)

Quote
ICT's new comedy stirs together three actors, five meals, lots of songs and mismatched lovers to bring out the fun

...
Or you could just head over to "Five Course Love," the Southern California premiere of one of off-Broadway's funniest and fastest musicals, and get entertained (if not fed) in five New York eateries in the space of an hour and a half.

"Five Course Love," with book, music and lyrics by Gregg Coffin, opens a month-long run in a production by International City Theatre at the Center Theater of the Long Beach Performing Arts Center. The funny, richly musical work is about love, not food, but it certainly could help you decide where to dine after the performance.

Directed by carin desai, "Five Course Love" takes a look at the humorous complexities of love in five scenes, using three actors, Perry Lambert, Jennifer Shelton and Christopher Carothers, a band and a score of more than generous proportions.
Shelton channels Marlene Dietrich for her German dominatrix character. (Tracey Roman/For the Press-Telegram)

"There are more than 250 pages of music in the show," desai said in a recent pre-rehearsal conversation in the Center Theater lobby that included the three performers. "And the show is only an hour and 25 minutes long. It moves so fast, and it is almost all music."

"Five Course Love" continues the ICT tradition, carried on by desai over the years, in bringing smaller musicals to the Southland, and she has found more than a few that deserved a bigger adueince than they got in New York. "In the musical thater today, there are lots of musicals that can't make it to Broadway because it s so expensive and dominated by corporate culture," desai said. "But there are many great shows that are being written and produced on a smaller scale, and this is one."

I know of the show, and I almost saw it back in 2005 down at Minetta Lane.  The amazing Heather Ayers was in it, as was John Bolton and Jeff Gurner.  Alas, the show itself, was not that amazing - at least from what I heard from friends at the time.  And I've actually read through the piece before too.  There are some catchy tunes, but just "some".  :-\

However, I'm guessing the author has made some revisions and improvements since the NY production.  I wish it well.

Back from a nice and easy meet with Susan Egan, and we're totally on the same page about her CD and that should all proceed smoothly - Vinnie will start on it this weekend.  It will also have my first hidden track since I went back to producing CDs - and it will be a very funny one.

And yes DRs JOSE and JMK were both waxing on about ONCE earlier this month.

Next, I watched Martin & Lewis' last film HOLLYWOOD OR BUST. It's only an average entertainment though I did like the songs composed for the film.

The transfer is VERY erratic. Lots of misregistration of the Technicolor, some scenes are very soft, and yet there are stretches of it that look sharp and beautiful, but the transfer is so inconsistent that it's aggravating to watch. (And, of course, Jerry seems so out of control at this point that he goes beyond aggravation. He must have been a nightmare to try to direct back then.)

I think if you search my comments on Hollywood or Bust you'll find that I am a bit harsher on the transfer, which I thought basically a disaster.  The only GREAT transfer in the set is Artists and Models, and while the color is eye-popping, even it isn't sharp enough.  The other transfers are all fine, if unexceptional.

Maybe it's Lloyd Webber's attempt to abandon a project that sounded ridiculous from the get-go?

I've heard nothing about WEHT Mr Mandelbaum. We once were friends but after crowning himself high priest of the musical, he attached himself to Mr Ethan Mordden, and they've been a coven ever since. He seems to have stepped down from the pontiff's chair. I heard a rumor that the notorious illegal videotaper who was caught too many times and banned from theatres was he, but I only repeat a rumor I'd heard.  If true, that would explain part of it but who's to know?

Yes, that's true--it was the "Mambo #5" of it's time.
Despite the heavy rotation and the fact is was #1 here ,I didn't catch up with Mambo #5 for ages.  Eventually - Ah! It was the old Perez Prado tune from the 50's and hadn't changed much at all.

I posted on another board that whenever ALW needs to keep his name alive in the papers, he pulls out the Phantom sequel - he's been doing it for years.  My guess is someone has read my ongoing commentary on this (I have posted about it every time he has - and have written several columnists about it), and contacted him and laid down the guantlet - let's hear some of this sequel.  Hence, the cat destroyed it - as if ALW wouldn't have it backed up somewhere.  Puhleeze.

No, being gay-themed does not make them good automatically, but I genuinely liked JEFFREY and BIG EDEN (the latter especially) very much.

BEDROOMS & HALLWAYS is now more interesting for its cast than for the story, but even it has its moments.

Well... I went shopping, but I didn't buy anything.  And after about an hour of walking along Fifth Avenue, I started to "feel" my run from this morning - and a dip in my blood sugar.  So, I grabbed a snack at Minamoto Kitchoan, and then some sliced papaya from a street vendor.  Good and good.  And then I hopped on the crazy-crowded 1 train back uptown.  And here I am.

I taught a student once who if she was given your birth date, could instantly tell you on what day of the week your birthday would fall in any given year.

Another student could remember all birthdays he had been told by students and teachers at the School. I guess that would have been  more than a few hundred!

Did it record your heart rate when you saw Matthew McConaughey without his shirt on in that latest issue of People when you ran around the newsstand?

All I know about Matthew McConaughey is that our last minister thought he had the cutest butt. And when DR Sandra gasped when she made that announcement, Pastor Sara told us that we should all appreciate God's great creations.

I just saw a full page ad in Variety, "for your Emmy consideration...", a show called The Librarian starring Noah Wyle.  I missed this completely.  Was it any good?  It must have been remarked upon here, given all our librarian DRs.

I presume it was for the Sequel - Return to King Solomon's Mines.  Great supporting cast with Bob Newhart and Jane Curtin. I enjoyed both it and the earlier - Quest For The Spear.

The show has nothing to do with real libraries or books - it's a riff on Indiana Jones type adventures.

Definitely one of Edisaurus' TNT more entertaining offerings.

Cody [a chocolate lab] is visiting us for a while.

That is very sad.   I’m guessing a six month recovery means one hip at a time, with the dog sedated during most of the recovery period.   I believe the success rate is rather high for hip replacement.

I’m hesitant to agree giving the dog up is worth it for free medical care.  How old is the dog?  Research might uncover some Lab clubs, or groups, that assist with medical costs.

Good vibes to Cody and his parents.

I think it was too big to be in downtown Scottsdale.  Keith said it was called something ranch & it had a golf course.  I only remember the pool & the food.

I organized a walking group every morning.  We walked around a large man-maid pond with townhouses and/or small homes.  At one end there was a place to get coffee.

Thank you!

Maybe it would be a good thing for those who are committment-phobic.

"It's not a marriage...just handfasting"!

Better than handfeasting, which would be biting the hand that feeds you, I guess.

Two more episodes of THE CLOSER down! My friend Alix Korey is the teacher in the episode of the 8 year-old boy's death.  They're all defecting to the West Coast.  I also checked my friend Conan's credits on imdb and I see he's Det. Ross on several upcoming episodes of Season Two.

The MRI was uncomfortable. I am glad it's over. I will not know any more until June 26.

Daytime Emmys rant......

Someone tell me who on god's green earth thought that Genie Francis's performance was award worthy.. What a crock!  She laide in a bed, woke up, and married Luke again... Big deal!! It was nice but not what I would call outstanding. I felt the other candidates were far more worthy...

I noted NBC had a pity nomination in one of the men's acting categories and that was the only one for NBC.. Not surprised!

Glad to see GL, ATWT and YR win over GH!

Chris Isaak
"Wicked Game"

I have it on tape but have nto found it on cd... Ironicelly back in the day when DOOL was well written, they used to use a lot of pop music and Wicked Games was used for Matt Ashford's character Jack.

So, whose does we have to take out?

And thinking about Conan give me the chance to wonder how his lady friend, the wonderful actress Annette Helde, who played the best Portia I ever saw in a cast including Stanley Tucci as Lorenzo, is doing these days.  Annette was Glenda Jackson's standby in the production of MACBETH that Jackson and Christopher Plummer took to Broadway years ago.  She and Conan met on the production, started dating, and wrote a funny play about the production, which had many directors, a long tour, and a short run. The two of them played every role except themselves.  It was brilliant.  Annette does a great Glenda Jackson impersonation.

Better watch those spoilers, DR DakotaCelt. You'll get your hand slapped by giving away award winners before the west coast has time to watch the Emmys. I don't think the show is being shown live out there.

(This spokenb by someone who's often had his hand slapped for giving away spoilers.)

While I was waiting for the Daytime Emmys to come on, I put on TCM on Demand. On my cable service, this is free, and they were offering, among other movies, OKLAHOMA! so I put it on to see which version of it they were showing.

It was the superior Todd-AO version, and it had the good transfer that was used in the laserdisc version. Very sharp and in beautiful color.
