Title: IN THE OFFING AND ONING
Post by: bk on June 24, 2007, 12:08:33 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were filled with ephemera and detritus, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - it's in the offing, I know it is.

Greetings to all.  Sorry to be so E&T yesterday and today...

I'm off in the Catskills, helping my DH prepare for a conference which starts today, which he is co-chairing.  300 delegates of the ACC - the American Conference of Cantors.

I shall return late today to catch up!  :)

Good morning, all! While 10% of New York marches down Fifth Avenue today, I will be working on edits at Toyland.  Mr Murray and I will be working through Tuesday since I will be taking Wed-Friday off to visit with incoming Hainsies and Kimlets.  Has anyone heard from DR vixmom one way or t'other? She has not responded to my mass email.

I've been printing out new pdf's for Kevin Spirtas, since I've just got a bit of arranging for him, and my printer's acting up.  Damn!

And off to Toyland.

Unseemly trivia question is giving me some trouble, as usual.

Thanks to DR FRANCOIS for the Betty Hutton clips a couple of days ago....a real find!!

DR JOSE - I am not sure what those clips were....but they were VERY interesting.  And I guess that guy and his wife in the audience were who the celebration was for!

Good morning!

I was awakened from a sound sleep by rumblings of thunder that went on for ten minutes. I couldn't hear any rain, but I assumed it was happening. Yep, when I finally got up, it had rained (but not hard).

I had planned to mow the grass early this morning. Now, I must see if the sun will dry the lawn so I can mow today. If not, later this week.

Other than NANCY DREW AND THE HIDDEN STAIRCASE, I have made no definite DVD plans for today.

I suspect THE HISTORY BOYS will make for an appropriate evening movie, but I'm still undecided about what I'll watch this afternoon.

DR JOSE - I am not sure what those clips were....but they were VERY interesting.  And I guess that guy and his wife in the audience were who the celebration was for!

Yeah... "Interesting" is a good word.  IIRC, Joop van den Ende(?) was/is a Dutch theatrical producer.  He used to bankroll some productions here in NYC, and was infamous(?) for running shows at a loss for the tax write-off - or some set-up like that.  I believe Wildhorn's Jekyll & Hyde was his biggest "cow".

*OH!  And I have to say the weather forecast for the coming week here in NYC is quite nice.  Yes, it's supposed to get into the 90's with some rain mid-week, but come the weekend, mid-70s and sunny.  -Sounds like a good time to visit NYC with friends.  :)

What is the revolutionary costume for today?

I am wearing a pair of blue jean carpenter-style shorts that hit just above the knee, white crew socks, and a bright red polo shirt from Old Navy.

The hat is black with the logo from Monday Night Football, and the shoes are brown topsiders.

And that is MY revolutionary costume for today....what about yours?

Anthony did a fringe show a few years ago, and yes, Equity (at least, I can't speak for the others) restricts the number of rehearsal hours.

Jose - yes, you're in workshop/staged reading mode.  Regular NYMF productions are allowed four weeks of rehearsal in addition to the six performances.  Again, I'm not taking all four weeks, but that's what they allow - the actors all get a stipend, but with this contract they can leave the show at any time for any reason.  Not sure about the AFM or even what the deal with them is.

And of course Cason is coming.
Title: Re:IN THE OFFING AND ONING

And it's not just recasting certain roles, it's finding a stage manager, set/prop person, wardrobe person, dancer person to restage the Brain Tap, and all that sort of stuff.  I've got to get a line producer in NY in the next week - that's the key thing right now, that and an MD, as our LA MD can't do it.

I did have a genealogy breakthrough though yesterday... I finally located a bit of info I have been looking for. I have been searching for this bit of info for years....

Now I just need to figure out what county in the LA area he died in. Forest Lawn Cemetary does not have a database on line... Darn!

I know Chester GArner and his wife both died in the LA area, possibly in Thousand Oaks. I was a very happy camper when I found this last night...

Good morning and good day, from Oakland C-A.

A nice warm day was enjoyed by all here yesterday.

Alas, my condo got rather warm in the late afternoon and by midnight, I still hadn't gotten the warm air out and the cooler, outside air, in.  Of course, there wasn't a breeze to be found.

Still....by 3 a.m., the warm air had given up the ghost and I woke up searching for covers.

Much to do today and so little time....must do some ironin' and some shoppin' and some cookin' so's I don't have to do anything next week except dress and eat.

I'm glad JRand got notice of his Cult Classics shipping out.  I don't think he said "which" Cult Classics box it was, but I'm certain it was the one with Allison Hayes prominently featured in one of the titles.

I'm on the pre-order list for Cult Classic Epics.  Boy! Oh, Boy!  "The Colossus of Rhodes," "Land of the Pharaohs" and "The Prodigal"...what a feast of entertaining, over-the-top 1950s excess I shall enjoy.

Ciao-ders.

Just had word that Alet is good to go, so that's a big load off.  I've begun making wish lists for the other roles I have to cast.  I have a pretty good idea who'll be The Brain, though.

Also, just added the divoon Miss Linda Purl to our fundraiser show.

DR DAKOTA CELT:

Well, for one thing, when Jupiter goes retrograde, it can have a large effect on forward progress in our lives, affecting career improvement, cash flow, personal growth, and physical energy levels. You can really feel like anything "big" you're trying to do with your life is stalled.   :D

How long does that last....

JRand, why is the Indy Fringe fest annoying?

Where to start?  :P

Completely unorganized.  Announced show you go to see, have been moved A LONG DISTANCE AWAY according to signs on the door....shows that have been announced are canceled or replaced....the organizer still owes a LOT of money to people from last year.

The productions are very haphazard in production and acting.

That's where I'll START!  8)

DR EDISAURUS, I liked that cheerleading video from yesterday.  Those gentlemen are certainly athletic.  And great tumbling passes!

My girlfriend did a short film with them that she hoped Turner would pick up as a "Webisode" series. )They were soliciting pilots.) It was a murder mystery called MURDER...MOST FABUOUS!!! My DH and some other friends worked on it. It was very entertaining and they were great fun. I'm sorry they didn't pick it up!

DR CILLA LIZ we need to see pictures of the new space....and your name on the door.

In time, DR JRand, in time.  The conference table will be delivered Tuesday afternoon, so after that I should be in.   The sign for the door has apparently been ordered, but isn't in yet and Paul is in the middle of repairing a building sized mural, designing and creating 2 Mardi Gras floats for our big parade next Friday and he still has to start the water tower.  So my name painted on the window will have to wait a couple weeks, but that's ok.   I have a notice in the window that will change to a temporary sign when I open if the real ones aren't ready yet

Well, time to go do some more work.  I have some administrative crap from my old job I was just going to blow off, but I'll feel better if I just go do it.  Besides it's too hot out to really do much else.

I did move the plants from one office to the other this morning.  For some reason I had this urgent need to move them out of the old office.  I thought it was weird, but it was easier to do it than to analyze why I felt that way.

OK, I've put it off long enough...off to Father's Day with the step-sibs...and the drama...oy.
I'm sure that I won't be treated as kindly as usual because I asked to be repaid for a business loan I made to one step-sister 4 years ago! (the irresponsible one, but also my niece's mother. She has taken 3 vacations this year and rented a cabin in the mountains for friends to visit so I figured maybe she could pay me back, too!)

The descriptions of Magic Mommy always bring her to mind. (not that MM is financially irresponsible, but some of the other things...)

DBF and I had a disturbing experience today at a local coffee shop. We first ran to Target so I could exchange my neice's birthday present for I bought the wrong size. AFter that we went to a coffeeshop in downtown Fargo called Atomic Coffee. We were pleasantly enjoying the nice weather and pleasant conversation until some nutcase at a nearby table started yelling nazi slurs and flashing his SS tattoo. Needless to say we were disturbed by this person as were a number of others and we left. The employee on duty did nothing and ignored the complaints of the customers. I do intend on sending an email to the owner of the establishment commenting on the lack of action of his employee. Needless to say I dont think I would be terribly comfortable going there again. They have lost me as a customer.

Neither Agnes Moorehead nor ELizabeth Montgomery ever won an Emmy for BEWITCHED (a criminal offense if you ask me).

Alice Pearce and Marion Lorne did win, and, of course, William Asher, Montgomery's husband at the time, won for directing the show.

I began my afternoon viewing with NANCY DREW AND THE HIDDEN STAIRCASE. This movie, adapted from the second book in the series, is probably the most faithful to the original source of any of the four NANCY DREW movies. (#1 was based on PASSWORD TO LARKSPUR LANE; I don't think #2 and #3 were based on the books).

In fact, the only things that didn't ring true was Nancy being scared of a frog and being dependent on her boy friend to do the dirty work like firing a gun, etc. The Nancy of the books would have no trouble doing that. And the Ned of the books (called Ted in the movies) wasn't such a bumbler, either.

Next, I open the MURDER SHE WROTE Season five boxed set, and watched the first three episodes. The season premiere again featured Len Cariou as MI-5 agent Michael Haggerty, and Jessica, caught at the scene of a murder, is thrown in jail where Michael has he framed so she'll stay locked up and safe from danger while he investigates. The ever-gorgeous Maxwell Caulfield was a primary guest star, and also on board were Hichael Horton, Michael Callen, and Leslie Easterbrook.

The second episode introduced Keith Michell as glamorous jewel thief Dennis Stanton. (He would star in several MURDER SHE WROTE episodes in Season 6 when Angela demanded some time off.)
Title: Re:IN THE OFFING AND ONING

And the third episode featured Henry Jones playing a man murdered and then discovered by two sisters and buried in their flower garden. Teresa Wright played one of the sisters. This episode introduced Ron Masak as new town sheriff Mort Metzger after Tom Bosley left the cast.

I'm not sure what all they mean by this, but on the NYMF website --
http://www.nymf.org/Page-101.html  -- some Qand A section which you may have already seen, so stop here if you have -- it said "under certain circumstances, we will provide fiscal sponsorship enabling donors to make fully tax-deductible donations to support your production. This requires case-by-case discussion and an additional agreement between NYMF and your producing company."

Of course, it didn't specify what the "certain circumstances"  are nor what the "additional agreement" entails (probably something like giving them your first born and all rights to actual and imagined future earnings) ... but it might be something to ask them about on Monday cause tax-deductible is a word that might make some potential donors sit up and take notice...

I do have to prepare mp3s and a little blurb for our new Kritzerland release, as well as a press release, as all that will happen this week.

In case I haven't mentioned it, we are going to reissue Classical Broadway (with a great new cover), as well as a limited edition pressing of Michel Colombier's Une Chambre En Ville, a musical film of Jacques Demy.  Those will probably come out as soon as I return from NY, but we'll probably start taking preorders in September.

I'm coming to Cabaret next Saturday night, the second night, and we're all going to PARTAY afterwards.

My question is: Where do you like to sit in a theatre?  Class Act has assigned seating, so we want to know where you want your comp tickets: front, middle, back, side, backstage, lobby, restroom? And you answered my second question, o' Great One: did you want to come opening night or the next night?

Yes, actually. Our sister city, Lake Charles, LA, sends a delegation every year for our Mardi Gras that is the lead in to Saturday in the Park.  They bring their Mardi Gras costumes and make fabulous food and the Crew de Charlie Sioux has Mardi Gras in June (or July depending on the year)

Good point, Miss Karen. It could make all the difference to some.

Please do because I have not heard about it.

It's the next movie in our film series
Movie - The Wind that Shakes the Barley

**Winner Best Film Cannes Film Festival**

Ireland, 1920. Damien and Teddy are brothers. But while the latter is already the leader of a guerrilla squad fighting for the independence of his motherland, Damien, a medical student at University College, would rather finish his training at the London hospital where he has found a place. However, shortly before his departure, he happens to witness atrocities committed by the ferocious Black and Tans and finally decides to join the resistance group led by Teddy. The two brothers fight side by side until a truce is signed. But peace is short-lived and when England imposes a treaty regarded unfair by a part of the population war resumes, this time pitting Irishmen against Irishmen, brothers against brothers, Teddy against Damien...

Good Evening!

Back from NYC Pride 2007.  -Which happened to be my first NYC Pride.  It was a long(!) parade - over 300 personalities/organizations/floats/etc.  The started coming down 5th Avenue a little after Noon, and it ended around 4:45.  I stayed for the whole thing.

I had a great time with my friend, Chris, and his family.  And some other Papas and their children joined us throughout the afternoon.  Since Jeff is with DIVA (Drag Initiative to Vanquish AIDS), and he and his cohorts were emceeing today at the NYPL stand, we had our own viewing area as it were - under a tent, right by the sidewalk.  -And it was a beautiful day, not too hot, not humid.

Miss Karen thank you for reminding Bruce I have posted.

Bruce, I did mention we were having company.  actually it was a dinner party for two families on our block, including a mutual friend of Charles Pogue's.  The evening was a hit & I spent the morning cleaning up, taking Sherlock in town for a walk, and then talking on the phone with Craig's girlfriend.  Now I'm catching up with the Brain news.

td I've had "Son Of a Witch" here to read for ages. Any opinions?

tomovoz, there is only one Gregory Maguire book which I cannot recommend, and that is LOST.
SON OF A WITCH is required reading, and a grand entertainment, for those of us who like Maguire's WICKED more than the book for the Broadway musical WICKED.
I think SON OF A WITCH is a well thought out book, gorgeously written and on the whole more satisfying than WICKED.  No fat, all meat.

These lasts months I have enjoyed reading about your career change, office news & am looking forward to reading the upcoming changes & new clients (whatever you can share about them).

Thanks Jane.  This afternoon I finished getting everything out of the old office that I will be taking with me.  Now I don't have to worry about that and no one gets the satisfaction of watching me leave with a box in my hands. (I did all my moving out after hours) There is still so much to do that it's a bit overwhelming.

DR Cillaliz - So, once you're done setting up your new office, can you come out to NYC for the weekend, and help me go through my boxes-o-stuff?

I'd love to...but I still have to go through all my boxes of stuff in my storage to find the office supplies I had left from closing my practice 6 years ago...I can see some three ring binders from the door, so there must be more in there...

June 29 is my official last day.  Since I have everything out and have copied all I need in the files I'm taking with me, I can just leave my keys and walk out the door.  The strangest thing is after all I've been through there, both good and bad, just like Morales, I feel nothing about leaving.  Moving was just moving things, there was nothing sentimental about it. I've never had this happen before.

I don't really have an official start date of my office. I'm considering getting things all set up and taking cases right away, but not really keeping official hours until July 9. I just this minute decided I'll have an open house on July 12, my birthday. I should have the office ready to go and can bring in some coffee and cake and maybe some cheese chunks and soft drinks and have my own little reception. I can invite all the people who would have been invited to the going away party.

I didn't like the film, MOULIN ROUGE, apart from the editing. And I didn't like the Broadway show. I went with Kris (director of MURDER...MOST FABULOUS!! that I hope you  all are watching right now.) She really wanted to see the show since she loved the director's work, I was willing to give it a try, and we both slept through it.

(We had just recorded the soundtrack for our film and flew in on the red eye to NY to start mixing the next day so we were very sleep deprived. But I think I would have slept through it anyway!)

The visit was actually fun. Not too much drama...hooray!

Well, there was some drama but it was just on video, watching the kids' theatre group program, featuring my niece and nephew.

And now, I think I shall get ready for bed.  It's been a long day, and I have a long, action-packed, activity-laden, fun-filled week ahead of me too.  So...

Goodnight.

I just saw it tonight...

*** Possible Spoiler alert in part of this post, consider yourself warned ***

Excellent film and very well done. I greatly enjoyed it and it is a powerful movie. I have one word describing the Black and Tans and it is not repeatable on this board but Sadistic would be one good word that is mildly clean. I thought it was very well written despite the length it moved along quite well at a good pace. Beautiful cinematography and the costuming was excellent.  Interestingly I found it ironic that opened the game playing Shinty a childhood game that pitted kids against each other and provided a perfect irony for the end. I wont give the ending away for those have not seen it but it is powerful.  I also found it interesting that they used both Irish Gaelic and English. The score is beautiful and does not rule the film.

From my own reading, Micheal Collins stated it was not a perfect peace but it was better than nothing.  THe civil war that occurred in Ireland after the treaty was passed created a rift in parts of Ireland and even families that has lasted for decades and to some extent may never fully go away.

DBF and I chatted after the movie at a different coffee shop after this afternoons incident and discussed at length about the movie and about other movies and documentaries about the Easter REbellion and the road to becoming a republic in 1949.  There is one documentary that is rather interesting if you can locate a copy and that is "HANG UP YOUR BRIGHTEST COLOURS". It is about Michael Collins and was banned initially back in the early 1970s by the British Governent and the BBC. It interviewed some of the survivors of the Easter Rebellion of 1916.

Another excellent documentary about Michael Collins is SHADOW AT BAEL NA BLATH" that was done by RTE.

The movie, MICHAEL COLLINS, is not a bad movie and some of the fact in it are accurate but it does have issues. My main beef is who in their right mind casted Julia Roberts in the role of Kitty Killane was mad.

There is a novel trilogy by Morgan Llewellyn that is based on the Irish drive for independence of British rule and has years for its title: 1916, 1922 and 1949.

Ron's a bit too old now.

I, of course, am salivating for an iPhone, but I've learned to never buy anything first generation - I'm sure there will be lots of bugs to work out - then I'll get one.

My lovely interviewee Lynn Bernay popped up in one of the M SQUADs I watched earlier this evening...her husband was printing phoney 20 dollar bills in the basement and she was spending them around town not knowning they were fake. Poor thing.

Today I went to a Fund Raiser for About Productions, a theater production company that is run by friend Rose Portillo and Theresa Chavez. The event was held in the historic house originally built by Cinematographer J. Roy Hunt in the 1920's . The house still has many original pieces, like the beautiful tile in the bathrooms, stain glass windows, and view of the Silver Lake resevoir and hills. The owner was Ex Major League Baseball player Dennis Martinez, who has worked to have the house historically protected, and has filled it with signed artwork.

The second half of my Solstice Adventure took place in a Downtown LA. In this back alley lies the artistic Lost Soul's Cafe with live entertainment.  It was the Soul Space Solstice Celebration, and there were people cleansing their bodies with healthfood and spirits with art and relaxing with yoga and massages. I had cheesecake :)
