Will we never get to page two?

I just went to the imdb, and here is the plot of Ephemera and Detritus:
Ephemera, son of the slave Argot, longs to be free. Detritus, son of nobleman Ingot, is given Ephemera as a slave and the two become very close, playing with long spears, and romping about the countryside with gay abandon. But fate intervenes and the slaves revolt and overthrow the house of Ingot and Ephemera and Detritus grow to hate each other with gay abandon. The film leads up to the incredible climax where Ephemera and Detritus must fight to the death - who will win - slave or master - and who IS slave or master. A devastating portrait of ancient stocks and bonds.

I've gotten some Craig's List apartment info, but boy are they expensive if you want to stay for five weeks. Good morning, all! I have a very early date at Toyland because I forgot that at 10:15 I have an appointment to hear the results of my MRI. Then, back to Toyland, and home to clean off the fire escape, go to the corner for strong drugs, and a trip to the liquor store: I need all the help I can get during DR MBarnum's too-long stay.
DR edisaurus, you asked about CANDIDE and you're gonna get it. While I had a lot of fun seeing the 1973 revisical, I am a strong believer in both the score and the composer's intentions, which nearly every version since 1973 has subverted. The show began as a play with music suggestion from Lillian Hellman who wanted to show the connection between the HUAC McCarthy hearings and the auto-da-fe's after the Lisbon earthquake. Bernstein saw Voltaire's satire as a chance for him to write satirical music and the show ended up as a "comic operetta" requiring good singers, who couldn't act as well as Hellman wanted her scenes to be performed. To her credit, shw took a picaresque novel with a lot of stupid characters enduring endless rape, torture, death, venereal disease, fraud, etc. and gave the plot a development that Voltaire never even considered, and her last scene in the ruins of Westphalia, when everyone finally wises up, is really beautiful and moving.
Bernstein's score is a mini-history of Western Music from the Eighteenth Century to Alban Berg as a joke:
Westphalia
1. Overture: Sullivan's "The Yeoman of the Guard" meets Rossini
2. The Best of All Possible Worlds: Gilbert & Sullivan
3. Oh, Happy We - I can't pinpoint anything here
4. Chorale and Battle: Bach chorales and a bit of Stravinsky
5. It Must Be So: folksong
Lisbon
5. Auto-da-fe: probably a bit of Verdi's auto-da-fe in DON CARLO and a lot that sounds Russian and Spanish to me with Gregorian chant
Paris
6. Waltz: Ravel's LA VALSE
7. Glitter and Be Gay: Jewel Song from FAUST and every other 19th Century coloratura aria
8. You Were Dead, You Know: bel canto det a la TRAVIATA
9. Pilgrim's Procession: There's a bit of Respighi's THE BIRDS
Buenos Aires
10. My Love: a serenade, but I couldn't point out a model here
11. I Am Easily Assimilated: tango
The score was conceived regionally: French music in Paris, German chorale in Westphalia, Spanish in Buenos Aires, etc. Bernstein hated the 1973 revision because it destroyed his framework.
John Mauceri and Harold Prince in 1973 removed the operetta/opera parody and turned the show into a comic romp. The homosexuality of Maximilian, only briefly referred to by Voltaire and Hellman, became a big camp item, Hershy Kay's reorchestration lost all of its original sense of classical parody by being pared down. Bernstein wasn't happy with the 1973 or the 1980s City Opera Version which kept the 1973 frame and inserted more of the original score, stillout of order.
In the late 1980s, Mauceri and the Scottish Opera put together a new CANDIDE with all the music back in its proper placement, Bernstein sanctioned this, and later in London he recorded a complete concert version of this edition.
I still prefer the 1956 cast; the recording is well conducted and the cast, with the exception of a radiant Bartbara Cook, often sounds too mature but sings the score excellently.
-
The Scottish Opera version, conducted by Justin Brown, is almost as good as the 1956 cast, and there are additional numbers.
-
Let me cast another vote for FIFTY PERCENT. I think it is one of the greatest musical affirmation songs ever written for the stage. I think that song and I'M WAY AHEAD from SEESAW are both powerful and uplifting numbers when performed with that positive spin. Don't let any yokel try to second guess your instincts, BK.
-
The Bernstein concerts in London were recorded for video and CD, and I prefer the DVD: the commentary by Bernstein on the work and the narration give the story some movement between the numbers and the cast, with a lot of opera stars, sings the music really well if not so theatrically as one would like. I like Adolph Green's Pangloss, Nicolai Gedda's Governer, and Crista Ludwig's Old Lady quite a lot, but Bernstein's conducting of his greatest score lacks the verve tat 1956, Mauceri in 1973, and Scottish Opera give it.
DRs on this site whom I admire like several versions I loathe, such as 1999 National Theatre of Great Britain and the PBS edition with Patti Lupone. I feel they miss the boat and intentions of the original writers.

I'm listening to Radio Devon. In 1965 Patricia Routledge did a studio recording of Hello Dolly I didn't know that! They aren't playing the entire recording, just Elegance.
-
Not needing to "get" any of Mr Bernstein's musical references, I just enjoy the delightfulness of "Candide". I probably heard the 1973 version first and it thus may well be my favourite. As with JMK, I enjoy all the versions I have. I enjoyed the Scottish one on video far more than I did Mr Bernstein's London concert version.
And yes I enjoy very much the campness of the recent concert version - even tolerating Patti!
-
Thank you so much for taking the time to continue my music education, DR Elmore!
I had noticed that the number of cuts on each album ranged quite a bit, but your notes have brought new depth to my understanding of what Bernstein and the rest were up to.
I was inclined to buy the one you listed, but the 1974 had more songs like "Life is Happiness Indeed", "Sheep's Song", and I didn't see "Auto de Fe" on the track list for the 1956 version.
I liked Dr. Pangloss in the 70's version. But The 50's one has Barbara Cook, who rules!
You can see why I sought advice!
-
We watched History Boys last night. I thought the play was wonderful. Funny, moving and beautifully done. The film is good but it doesn't have the effect of the stage production (IMHO). Anthony had not seen the play and was rather put off by Dakin's moves toward Irwin. If you've not seen the show I think the movie is a decent representation but having seen both I'll vote for the live show.

I'm glad I wrote "North America". Hello DR Jennifer.

My client last night enjoyed hearing that shout-out from Beverly Humphries!
Ben, who sang the version of "This Nearly Was Mine" that she played on "your" show? She said his name twice but it was so fast I coudn't catch it. My DH thought he heard the same singer the next morning performing the "Going Home" piece derived from the New World Symphony.

Bernstein's complete recording is now a 2-for-1 priced CD at B&N.

Two farmers were talking about a cooking competition they had watched on the Food Network the previous day. One said to the other, "Well, that AGRESTIC chef with the orange clogs managed purty well with his barbeque, but I think what killed him was that he couldn't ACE GRITS." And the other farmer replied "Yep, barbeque is only as good as the accompaniments that GRACES IT."

Jose - very little games-playing yesterday, but I did play the video poker at several different casinos. Netted a small gain overall.
The bus ride cost was interesting. The round trip was $31, but when we got to Caesar's and got off the bus, they handed each of us a 20 dollar bill (not chips or anything that had to be redeemed at that hotel, but actual money), bringing the cost of the round trip bus trip to $11.
One thing that annoys me is that you have to be vigilant since even if you start off asking to "Bet 1" - meaning one coin, be it quarter, nickel or whatever - in some casinos, the machine would automatically switch over after a short while to "Bet 5" telling you on the screen that it was switching over BUT you have to notice it - and you'd have to hit a button to switch it back to "Bet 1" again. Lots of people just play mindlessly, and the casinos are clearly counting on that. This clearly happened at one of the end-of-boardwalk casinos, but I came out ahead there, so I guess I shouldn't complain, but I don't think it's fair when people aren't being ultra-vigilant.

Reading about Candide in the previous posts, I got confused and started imagining Pat Boone as Candide and Ann Margaret as Cunegunde.
Strangely, it sorta works. NOT!!!

I probably was led to the 1973 Candide by the Sondheim connection.
Ditto.
I enjoyed this recording a lot, back when I was in college. My roommate at the time loathed it. "How dare they make a musical out of Voltaire's book!" he moaned, more than once.

One of my fantasies is to hear Phillip Ramey perform "Glitter and Be Gay."
-
Dorothy Loudon received a prolong ovation when she performed Fifty Per Cent in the concert: MY FAVORITE BROADWAY: THE LEADING LADIES.
She sings If Anyone Told Me (a song dropped from the Broadway show) as intro to the song Fifty Per Cent.
It is performed just as BK has said it was. Positive and upbeat. And you see it in her face and body language
I also saw her perform it on Broadway from the front row and it was amazing. The high point of the show.
She loves Al despite knowing he is married.
some lyrics:
He says he loves me
And I believe its true
Doesn't that make someone belong to you
So I don't share his name
So I don't wear his ring
So there's no piece of paper saying tha he's mine
You don't plan to fall in love
But when you fall you fall
I rather have fifty per cent of him
Than all of anybody else at all
Or any per cent of him
Than anyone else at all

Good day one and all!

Thank you, DR ELmore, for the crash course on all things CANDIDE. One of the things that keeps me coming back to this site is the limitless knowledge of many of the posters here. Simply amazing.
I saw the 1973/74 Broadway version (at the "renovated" Broadway Theater, in fact) and thoroughly enjoyed it even though I knew it wasn't the same as the Barbara Cook cast recording I had.

TOD:
All time favorite of this genre is the Steve Reeves version of THE THIEF OF BAGHDAD. It was made in 1961 and filmed in Cinemascope although all I have is a pan and scan videotape of very inferior quality.

I don't know how many musicians were in the pit for the original production and recording, but the orchestrations for the 73/74 revival are considerably reduced.

I am really looking forward to my series of gay-themed movies recorded off TCM last night. I'll start with STAIRCASE and follow it with Dirk Borgarde's VICTIM.
I still have the remaining 30 minutes or so of SEMPER FI from last night to watch, and being gay-themed, it will fit today's theme just fine.

On the phone with Fed Ex Revenue Services. The overnight package I sent to Miss Emily Skinner for Saturday delivery arrived yesterday. I called last night and was told that I'd sent it overnight delivery (on Friday) and that it was delivered on time. I said what was this waybill I had in front of me with SATURDAY DELIVERY clearly checked? He looked up the waybill and said "Oh." Then he said that I, in fact, hadn't paid the proper Saturday delivery charge. I said how is that my problem - I paid what was asked of me and I clearly stated Saturday delivery and even asked the person if I had filled out the waybill correctly for Saturday delivery. He asked me what he could do to make me happy. I said refund my dough. He said I had to call revenue services. I can see that getting a refund out of Fed Ex for their obvious screw up is not going to be as simple as walking down to the USPS and geting my money back. If the USPS screws up, you just take your receipt down there and they give you cash on the spot. Apparently, Fed Ex can't be bothered to do that. I'm on hold while this person is doing "research."
-
I've had Duel Of The Titans here for some time (under its original title of Romulus and Remus) and I even began watching it - I'll have to finish it after Rhodes.
-
And as for Candide...
I happen to like all the versions, warts and revisions and displacements and all. I do agree with DR elmore that Bernstein's concert/studio recording on DG seems to take itself too seriously. -And I had always wished for a younger Candide on that recording other than Jerry Hadley, and June Anderson's tone has never sat well on my ears. But it is nice to have all that music.
And I guess that Barbara Cook does sound "mature" on the 1956 (OCR), even though she was far from "mature" at that time. -I also love her stories about that whole process, and to think that she was basically just "opening her mouth and letting the notes come out" during "Glitter and Be Gay" since she didn't really know the proper way to let them "fall out".
-
The woman just confirmed that it was a Fed Ex screw up and that she put in a request for a "credit" because it takes five to seven days for them to get billing info. I said that if she'd been able to see the waybill (she had, which is how she saw that Saturday delivery was checked) that the billing info was clearly on there. She said someone would be calling me by July 1st, but if I hadn't heard I was free to call back. Seems very amateur and like they're hoping I'll forget. I will not forget.

Hmm... Here in New York City, at least, I've just taken my copy of the Airbill back down to the office I sent the package from, and they've issued me a credit right there. -Of course, this was only after I had called Customer Service to make sure that the credit was in their system - they can't seem to take care of those things at the Ship Centers. ???

Seriously, there are some places on the East Side that are like long-term hotel apartments. -A lot of people who come up for hospital treatments use them. Alas, no names come to mind right now, but I know they will come up on hotels.com and other sites like that. TOD, I exclude films like SPARTACUS, GLADIATOR because they are serious A pictures not in the same league of tackiness that THE COLOSSUS OF RHODES is in.
So my choices:
JASON & THE ARGONAUTS (almost too good to be included)
THE EGYPTIAN (Supposedly an "A" film, but man is it cheesy)
About "Jason and the Argonauts", I have to say it doesn't belong on any list with those other titles (excluding "The Egyptian"). It makes no pretensions to be anything other than what it is...a terrific fantasy. It's in a separate class with "Mysterious Island", "Seventh Voyage of Sinbad" and "Journey to the Center of the Earth", IMO.
As for "The Egyptian"....to each his own.
In my opinion, "The Egyptian" -- as a film -- stands well above most epics of the 50s, but some reject it for whatever reasons finding no value in the authentic atmosphere, fantastic sets, stunning cinematography and brilliant music underscoring.
Add to that some solid performances from Victor Mature, Jean Simmons, Peter Ustinov and Michael Wilding (plus a stolid, if uninvolving leading performance by Edmund Purdom) and you really get a stunning piece of entertainment that holds the attention, dazzles the eyes and ears and becomes emotionally involving.
Wilding, as the pharaoh, has the film's -- and one of filmdom's -- best moments near the end of the film.
But best of all is the film's music:
There have been many milestones in film music history that have resonated through the decades finding new audiences and inspiring new recordings.
Unique among them is "The Egyptian," a major collaboration between uber-composers Bernard Herrmann (to whom the film was assigned) and Alfred Newman (20th Century-Fox Music Department head and all-time great composer/conductor). While Herrmann got the initial assignment, the allotted time was inadequate for him to do justice to the film. Newman stepped in and developed thematic materials which Herrmann incorporated into his own desginated sections of the film, while Newman the rest.
Newman's underscoring for the key scene with Wilding's pharaoh, Akhnaton -- called "Death of Akhnaton" -- is an example of what film scoring is all about. It also heightens awareness of what seems to be missing from many of today's film composers resumes -- intensive education in music theory, counterpoint, harmony and exposure to all forms of music. The scene is breathtaking, heartbreakingly performed and musically overwhelming, although the music is always "under" the scene rather than rampaging over it.
There are many wonderful pieces of music in this film...from the awe-inspiring opening to the exquisite theme for "Merit" to the sinuous, hypnotic theme for "Nefer", Herrmann and Newman have created a musical palette of stunning splendors.
I cannot overstate its importance as a film score, thankfully preserved on CD by Film Score Monthly -- the splendiferousness of its performance on this recording by the 20th Century-Fox Studio Orchestra as conducted by Alfred Newman, and the glorious choral work of Newman's right-hand man, Ken Darby.
"The Egyptian" is a beacon in film music history.

As I'm finding out, these apartment things don't work for long stays, but for short stays they seem to be cheaper than apartments (the ones on Craig's List), but then again I have no idea what deposits are required, etc.
-
As they are flying over our seats, I shall mouth "Bruce Kimmel says hi." :)
-
Bruce - Could you get three short-term stays if it works better for short term?
-
Laura _ Does MOVIN' OUT play Monday nights? The info we had gotten that for the major shows, our only choices on a Monday night were Legends in Concert and Mega-Magic.
I just googled "Atlantic City shows" and clicked on a ticketing site. I thought you were there now and looking for a show for tonight. Do you only go on Mondays?

Later versions of Candide have inserted and/or restored Candide's final aria, "Nothing More Than This," which is classic Bernstein, and which I love.
Actually, I was going to go further into CANDIDE-dom before I had to leave. I'll report on my MRI in a minute.
DR edisaurus mentioned the 1973 numbers "Life Is Happiness Indeed," which was a rewrite by Sondheim of Dorothy Parker's "Venice Gavotte," and "The Sheeps' Song," which was an early and long-cut number called "Fernando's Lullaby." The original final number for CANDIDE was a strange piece called "Get You Up," which is in the earliest drafts.
I believe "Nothing More Than This," like "Words Words Words" was written for the 1971 Los Angeles Civic Light Opera production of Sheldon Patinkin's (Mandy's cousin, I believe) rewrite of Lillian Hellman. It was this production that caused Hellman to wash her hands of the show and abandon it. "We Are Women," Bernstein's bel canto duet, was written for the 1958 London production. I saw the Broadway-bound 1971 version, which had great musical staging by Michael Kidd and two(!!) versions in Act One Scene One of "The Best of All Possible Worlds" and "Oh Happy We," which was ridiculous and redundant.
Now, the MRI! I'm okay with a herniated cervical disc and a lot of arthritic irritation. No surgery for now. I told the orthopedist I'd say au revoir and not goodbye.
DR MusicGuy called me while I was on the subway and invited me to lunch. The phone number's fine except the area code is so garbled I can't make it out!
-
Can someone find out, for example, what the Hilton Gardens (where I stayed last time - on Eighth) is going for end of July?
According to hotels.com, it's over $300/night. Couldn't easily find a direct phone number, though.
-
No surgery for now.
THAT'S good news, at least! :)
-
"The Egyptian" is a beacon in film music history.
Fascinating story, DR Ron P. I'll have to pick that one up!

Thanks, DR elmore3003, for all the great details on Candide!

DR Elmore, sounds like good, but still painful news...Healing vibes~~~~~~~
-
DR Elmore, sounds like good, but still painful news...Healing vibes~~~~~~~
Ditto from me.
To put a lighter spin on this, I'd say this is normally where someone would say, "Blame Jose".
But since it's Elmore and it's a herniated cervical disc, it had to have been caused by something else.
I say, "Blame MBarnum!"
;D

I don't know how many musicians were in the pit for the original production and recording, but the orchestrations for the 73/74 revival are considerably reduced.
35 players at the Martin Beck, 12 in 1973 at the Broadway. The production in 1973 was a lot of fun but it does pervert completely Bernstein's compositional arc of the score as well as lose the opera parody and any classical music references get lost in that tiny approach.
-
Laura - Lesli and I just happened to go yesterday, choosing a Monday in part because it's known to be a less crowded day. It was my first time there in over two years. Probably will go back again in a few months. I hate to concede this, because for me, Vegas is such an effort to get to - but Atlantic City ain't the magical place Vegas is, especially with the conditions of the neighborhoods just one block from the Atlantic City boardwalk and the (relatively) lesser magic of the Atlantic City hotels. Even the cab ride form Taj Mahal to the Tropicana felt a bit skeevy and threatening.
-
TOD:
Not a huge fan of this genre, but I'll go with:
JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS
CLASH OF THE TITANS
I agree with these...I don't know too many, either.
-
Is this the very very tall actor someone asked about last night who appears on TNT'S HEARTLAND? (His character is named Vancouver, but I don't think it's because he is so much farther above everyone else...)
http://www.tnt.tv/series/heartland/castcrew/?contentId=28974
-
bk - Dave Clemmons Casting handled the two big open calls for NYMF the past two years. You may want to give them a call to see if you can still get on their list - 212-594-7434. *And you can ask for DR Joy since she's now a Casting Director there. -Or you could also talk to Geoff, Bekah, etc.
-
And as for Candide...
I think Ms Cook is radiant! Robert Roundesville is too mature, but I love his "Ballad of Eldorado!"
-
Planning a trip with Julie to the D.C. area to see Witches of Eastwick at the Signature in Arlington, Virgnia at the July 7 Saturday matinee, and then Dead Man's Cell Phone at the Woolly (sp?) Mammoth Theater that evening.
Jose - We have an extra ticket for Witches of Eastwick if you're going to be in the D.C./Virginia area that day. Or have you already seen it?
DR FJL - Thanks, as always, for keeping me in mind. Alas, I will be under the stage of the Shoenfeld for most of that weekend.
-
You mean to say that you would not want to stay on DR elmore's fire escape too?
;D
:o
:-X
;)
I suspect that once DR Cason arrives for his Fringe Festival production in august, I will have him on the fire escape through the NYMF run. Oy!
Perhaps THE BRAIN Agelenos should all rent a commune together?
-
The Braingelinos - sounds like a moniker
-
So my choices:
ULYSSES (sort of the "A" version of a Steve Reeves film)
I've always liked this film and HELEN OF TROY as well. Both do Homer better than Brad Pitt's version of a 10-year war.
-
And, I HOPE, illustrations!
If he doesn't hyperventilate while posting them!
-
I think Ms Cook is radiant! Robert Roundesville is too mature, but I love his "Ballad of Eldorado!"
Ah, I just went back and re-read your original post. I misunderstood the placement of your commas.

I blame the headaches, the drugs, the alcohol, and the housecleaning on DR MBarnum. The herniated disc is probably part of the problem requiring surgery in 1999, long before our Mikey (or DR Jose, scourge of God) was plaguing my life.
-
I shall now be on my way to a work session, then rehearsal, after which I shall return.
-
bk - Some hotel chains do offer greatly reduced extended stay rates. However, you usually have to contact the hotel directly to get them - and to haggle with them. In the meantime, I'd pick up a copy of the Sunday New York Times this weekend, and check the Travel section for the hotel-apartment listings - which are usually only advertised in the out-of-town editions.
-
Thank you, DR ELmore, for the crash course on all things CANDIDE. One of the things that keeps me coming back to this site is the limitless knowledge of many of the posters here. Simply amazing.
Concur! Concur! Concur! I was most impressed with DR ELMORE's explanation, as I always am when he goes into detail on a topic. So much good information here!
-
I misunderstood the placement of your commas.
The Placement of Your Commas - the title of my next novella.

I will be under the stage of the Shoenfeld for most of that weekend.

That is correct, sir.
-
Ron,
I love JASON & THE ARGONAUTS (particularly it's great Bernard Herrman score and the fight with the skeletons).
THE EGYPTIAN I enjoyed despite its flaws...Edmund Purdom and Mr. Zanuck's pretty committment, Bella Darvi. I think it an earnest film but one that doesn't quite work. One wonders what it might have been with Brando who apparently turned down the Purdom role...but one can also see why Mr. Brando did. I think Victor Mature is often underrated. Michael Wilding is easily the best thing in the film along with Newman's score. I've had the novel on my bookshelf for years, but have never read it.
Another sort of in the sword and sandal category is the SON OF SINBAD, with Rory Calhoun (isn't he also the star of THE COLOSSUS OF RHODES?) and Vinny Price. A great piece of Arabian Nights hokum with lots of scantily-clad lovelies, notably stripper Lili St. Cyr.
I always enjoy these sword and sandal pictures but its tough to seperate all the various and sundry titles and interchangeable heroes: Sampson, Hercules, Maciste, Atlas. They all blur together so I have a tough time remembering which ones I've seen.
-
Oh yes, todays TOD is right up my alley.
But to pick some favorites....and of course my fondness is for the Italian sword and sandal spectaculars...I will list my favorite film for each of my favorite actors (most of which I have met in person!! ;D )
Mark Forest:
Hercules Against the Sons of the Sun

Gordon Mitchell (one of the dearest people I have ever met!!):

;)
My bio of DR Jose is to be titled "The Scourge of God and his Euphemisms."

I love all the "then" photos of some of MBarnum's favorite folks.
Wouldn't it be "neat" to see some "now" photos, too!
;)
-
My bio of DR Jose is to be titled "The Scourge of God and his Euphemisms."
Every page would have at least one use of the word "reservoir", I'm certain.
-
Rock Stevens bears an uncanny resemblence to Peter Lupus of Mission:Impossible fame. And Rock Stevens sounds mightily like a made up name.
Elmore, I too enjoy HELEN OF TROY more than TROY and I'm quite fond of its Max Steiner score.
-
Quick Tuesday greetings from the Washington Convention Center! The Internet Cafe here at the conference isn't too busy and my official work is done - yay, I'm on vacation now! Just waiting for a call from DH Richard, who's up the street at church. When he gets back here, we'll go to Zaytinya for lunch, then over to Union Station to pick up our train tickets for Thursday morning.

I had a lucky thing happen today.
Last week, someone put a flyer in our mailbox for a yellow lab/golden retriever that escaped near our house next to the loft. We looked for it during the week but no luck.
Today when I went to the coffee shop, I noticed handwritten "lost dog" signs. No description, and it was about a mile from where the dog escaped. The coffee girl said she'd seen these signs in her neighborhood which actually described the dog as a yellow/golden. I called the folks who put up the posters, and also called the numbers of the flyers and gave each the other's numbers. The guy I talked to sounded like he was going to cry.
This afternoon, a woman called me to say she was going to pick up Layla from the girl who had rescued her. She had escaped while her owner stopped at the office across the street from our house---he was on his way to Oregon to be best man in his brother's wedding, and couldn't stay to find her so the office people said they would take care of things for him. The office lady was very happy because Layla was not from the area and got lost quickly.
Knowing I had a small part in reuniting them gave me a great start to the day
Edi, what a wonderful story. I repeated it, just in case anyone happened to miss it yesterday.
-
DR elmore. I'm very pleased you don't need surgery but is there nothing that can be done to improve things a bit?
-
Good Afternoon!
WOW! Was that a lot of phone calls! And I'm not even bk! ;)
In any case, time for me to head to midtown...

Bruce, a number of years ago when Craig had a summer internship in NY the brother of a friend found an apartment for Craig to sub-let. A notice had been posted at his office. I suggest asking everyone you know in NY for leads.
Good luck finding something at a reasonable rate.

Anybody here looking forward to the start of BIG BROTHER on july 5th?
Me, me, me!!! My favorite summer tv show!
-
Yes, indeed Rock Stevens = Peter Lupus.
He had appeared in a few roles as Peter Lupus but AIP changed his name to Rock Stevens when they signed him on to a contract, but once he started Mission Impossible the producers suggested that he would be taken more seriously as an actor on the show if he would change his name back to Peter Lupus.
-
i was going through an old Showbill program for Pacific Overtures from 1984. One of the actors, Chuck Brown list HERRINGBONE as a credit performed in Cleveland. I never realized the show has been around that long
-
DR MBarnum clean out your inbox. I would like to send something to you.

TOD: I have not seen any of these movies of which you speak.

It's a WONDERFUL score. And the film looks pretty spiffy on DVD, too.

It might be interesting to make a mix tape of the best tracks from all the CANDIDES. It seems like many of the recordings have their own merit.

The promise is more audience involvement than ever before. Somehow, I doubt it will be the sort of involvement that allows us to "vote off" people we don't like. We had that kind of power during the never-referred-to first season.
-
Even though there may be some BRAIN casting in NY, I have to say that I love Egbert's performance, and his tracks are the ones on the CD that I play the most, along with Cason and Merrill's.
-
Of course, I liked General Mills, too, so what do *I* know?
-
RE: big brother.
For those who get Showtime, there will be 3 hours/7 days a week (from midnight to 3am). I'm hoping they show this in canada too!
-
Oh and re: DR Edi's dog story. It made me all teary!
-
DR Edi, on last night's CLOSER, one entire segment of the broadcast seemed like it was time compressed--shown at a slightly faster speed. Was that intentional? I have to say that it was a little annoying--it's one of the reasons I've stopped watching shows on TV Land.
And were the cookies a product placement?
-
Re: CANDIDE
My introduction to the show was the '73 production, as well, so it's been my favorite version of the show. But I enjoy the original cast recording well enough to put it in second place. The Bernstein conducted recording is probably my least favorite.
I remember that I really liked the Live From Lincoln Center broadcast on PBS (though I didn't care much for the Pangloss.) The 98(?) Broadway revival with Jim Dale was simply awful!
-

And were the cookies a product placement?
I didn't notice any time compression, but I was working until midnight so I only saw the second airing. I agree with you, the Lexicon process has made a lot of shows unviewable to me. I've mentioned it before and network execs say "You're too picky...the aveage viewer will never notice." So here's proof that they DO notice.
And yes, the cookies were an uncomfortably forced product placement. I've never seen them do something so blatant before. (Did you notice that Keebler was one of our sponsors?)
I just loaded the 6th episode. The product placement isn't so blantant...they worked it into the script better. And it was a terrific episode, too!
-
DR MBarnum clean out your inbox. I would like to send something to you.
Done!
-
And I'm not even bk!
You're not? ???
-
I vote for Egbert to play the Brain also...I just adored him as the Brain...his voice was great and his movements in the Brain costume were, as they say, spot on and just made you love him despite his evilness.
-
Isn't it funny how whatever version of an album you buy first becomes your favorite? I have a lot of cheapo European recordings that aren't the best, but because they were my first...
I also find that sometimes with certain authors or musical artists...the first book or album I was exposed to (not necessarily *their* first) often becomes my favorite.
-
I wonder if the BRAIN itself will make it to NY or will a new version be created? It looked like it took quite a beating trying to make it through the spaceship doors every night!
-
It might be interesting to make a mix tape of the best tracks from all the CANDIDES. It seems like many of the recordings have their own merit.
Great idea, but just the THOUGHT of making all of those decisions exhausts me! Same thing with Follies... :)
-
DR Jose, I think you were mistaken in your belief that the Bollywood movies on 42nd St were no more....but the Regal E is still showing Indian films on a regular basis...in fact showing right now is Jhoom Barabar Jhoom ....
...so my plan for Friday now is going to Jerry Ohlinger's Movie Material Store and then that evening maybe seeing a Bollywood movie at Regal....anyone want to join me? (don't be afraid!) It is fun to see a big, extravagent, dance and music filled Bollywood movie on the big screen...it is just like going back in time to the colorful musicals of the 50s.
-
Sorry, DR Edisaurus, I can't comment on Fritz in the shower, as I have...oh...approximately two seasons to catch up on, first. ;)
-
I had my car washed during lunch today. So, naturally, it will rain tonight... :)
-
...anyone want to join me? (don't be afraid!)
DR MBarnum, if I were going to be in town, I would have joined you!
-
DR Singdaw, I received the DVD that you sent!! :-* Thank you very much! I have no idea when I'll be able to watch it (our rehearsal went until 11:45 last night! :P), but I'll eventually be able to. :D
-
DR MBarnum, if I were going to be in town, I would have joined you!
See...Singdaw isn't afraid....well....Jose, Elmore, Rodzinski...don't you want to experience Bollywood entertainment the way that millions of Hindu's do everday at the multiplexes?
-
DR FJL - your post over at TB had me cackling!!!!! You're a very funny guy. :)
-
DR MBarnum, if I were going to be in town, I would have joined you!
Do you do windows, too?
-
Thank you very much!
You're quite welcome.
11:45 PM is WAY past my bedtime! ::)
-
Do you do windows, too?
Yes! And DOS... ;)
-
singdaw. Thanks. If it made you cackle, then by all means please put an LOL under it. Right now, it looks like it's just sitting there like so much fish. :)

Quick Tuesday greetings from the Washington Convention Center!
Well, your ALA Conference made a big splash in Sunday's Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/06/23/AR2007062301378.html?sub=AR):
(http://media3.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/photo/2007/06/23/PH2007062301384.jpg)
Ann Seidl's "Hollywood Librarian" premiered here to a grateful audience of colleagues.
Men in tuxes and women in gowns smartly walk the red carpet at the Washington Convention Center, to the "woo-hoo!" of adoring fans. A cameraman records the procession, photographers angle for close-ups. One carpet-walker, a woman in blue sequins, strikes a come-hither pose, and a security guard taps a female spectator on the shoulder.
"Are they famous?" he asks.
"No," she replies. "They're librarians."
Librarians, with the notable exception of Laura Bush, aren't often in the spotlight and publicly appreciated -- which is exactly why Ann Seidl decided they deserved a movie.
…
Her decade-long campaign for librarian respect, fueled mostly by private donations, has culminated with "Hollywood Librarian."
Friday evening, the first night of the 128th annual American Library Association convention here, Seidl premiered her $185,000 opus to an audience of 5,000 very, very grateful colleagues.
Susan Turrell, a star of the film, is director of Tunkhannock Public Library, serving a community of 28,000 in rural Pennsylvania. At a reception preceding the screening, the 62-year-old Turrell, speaking in a soft drawl, cited her absurdly broad range of duties:
Providing tech support, plunging toilets, changing light bulbs, spraying for ants, browsing MySpace, dressing as Winnie the Pooh, proofreading résumés for library patrons, safeguarding against online porn, providing pro bono therapy -- and coordinating endless fundraising efforts that have included golf tournaments and square dances. All without even the benefit of office space, which was converted into community rooms.
"Some days," she said, due to the sheer busywork of the job, "I don't even see a book."
Darby O'Brien, a silver-haired librarian in Utica, N.Y., can empathize. "Public libraries are just about the last place that anyone can go. We serve the homeless and the mentally ill, we teach the disenfranchised how to use the Internet.
…
After the screening, Ann Seidl relaxes long enough in her emerald-green gown to snap a few photographs with fans. But by the next morning, she'd be manning a booth, persuading her colleagues to screen "Hollywood Librarian" at their own branches and spread library awareness to patrons.
Seidl hopes the film will penetrate, grass-roots style, the consciousness of everyone who has ever loved a library. "If everyone knew how smart and funny and dedicated librarians were," she says, "no library would ever be shut down again."

"Public libraries are just about the last place that anyone can go. We serve the homeless and the mentally ill...
Well, DR Ginny can certainly vouch for that!
Nice to see you, DR der Brucer. :)

I've been washing the windows so that on the fire escape DR MBarnum can clearly watch me inside enjoying the air conditioning and eating pheasant.

It was particularly impressive at the time it was released (1954) - the startling Curtiz Cinemascope vistas were breathtaking (much grander that what we had in The Robe).
At the time I was being much impressed by the engineering advances of the Romans, and was enthralled by the "look what they did back then" plot elements of the film - particularly the bit on brain surgery.

...then we would be up the proverbial creek.

- but Atlantic City ain't the magical place Vegas is, especially with the conditions of the neighborhoods just one block from the Atlantic City boardwalk...
I remember when the developers were trumpeting (no pun intended) the coming of the Casinos as the salvation of Atlantic City - give us gambling and your streets will soon be paved in gold. Hell, most of the casino work force is bused in (not saying that the indigenous AC population is particularly employable.)

Did you watch the pilot - he hates being called "Vancouver" - it's not his name, just where he's from and he bristles at the depersonalization the nickname represents.

Speaking of which...did you do some of the promos, or is someone else learning from you? (Quick edits smoothly tied together by flowing naration.) The end of last weeks Closer had a pair of back-to-back teasers - Closer followed by Heartland that were a nice package. Usually we get things like "THE CLOSER _COMING"........Oh, and by the way... "Here comes HEARTLAND". Last week we had "WAIT FOR NEXT WEEK'S CLOSER; and stay tuned for HEARTLAND"

I saw the pilot so many months ago that I didn't remember him.
As far as the promos, I did the CLOSER part, which is basically just pulled from the 30 spots I do first. But the hypey voice-over...it makes us all a little ill!

Nice to see you back in the house, Der B!
What did you think of Heartland?

Product placements don't bother me at all. They're a fact of life now, and I much prefer the real thing to someone opening a box that's labeled "Cookies" or drinking from a can called "Cola."
And I thought last night's episode was pretty terrific. I plan to rewatch it tonight.
-
I finshed SEMPER FI as I was eating lunch. A reasonably good and certainly heartfelt document of one man's journey to be true to himself and his country. But I didn't make a DVD-R of it. I doubt I'd want to watch it again.
-
No one should pass up the chance to see a Bollywood musical in a theatre!
-
I did to to an Indian wrap restaurant in Times Square yesterday that had a lot of old Bollywood posters on the wall that MBarnum would love. It is closing the day he arrives though.

Next came the dreary, going-nowhere STAIRCASE. Two hours of bitchery and carping with only an occasional moment of tenderness (usually to be ridiculed in any event), and both male stars completely hopeless trying to be "mincing" or "pansy" or whatever archaic adjectives one might use to describe their behavior. I'll grant that Burton might have had one moment or two of genuine feeling or depoth. Harrison's performance is completely on the surface and as phony a job as I've ever seen from a major actor.
Despite Donen's best efforts to move action out of doors and to different locales, it stubbornly remains a talky, uninteresting play.
-
VICTIM, on the other hand, is a dynamite drama with stupendous performances and a really gripping story. I had seen this before but not in a long time. How great to see it again after the completely artificial STAIRCASE.

Yes! And DOS... ;)

I'll watch some more MURDER SHE WROTE episodes tonight, I suspect, after I rewatch THE CLOSER.
LIST ON THE D-LIST at 10 though I'm going to DVR it so I can watch tomorrow and speed through commercials.

I decided, in spite of the annoying promo’s, to give Heartland a chance. We recorded the first two episodes & will watch the pilot sometime this week. We still have last night’s Closer to watch.

Welcome to America!
This morning Ioana took Yogi for a walk & returned home just as a policewoman & a detective were taking the nice lady across away in handcuffs. Craig was inside studying & completely missed the commotion.
The lady was very friendly to Ioana & said she forgot to lock the door & to please do it for her.
-
I did to to an Indian wrap restaurant in Times Square yesterday that had a lot of old Bollywood posters on the wall that MBarnum would love. It is closing the day he arrives though.
News travels fast!
-
Nice to see you back in the house, Der B!
What did you think of Heartland?
Thank you.
I enjoyed the pilot but missed last evening (can ketchup next week at 7)..I loved the teasers... "STOP THAT WEDDING"...STOP THAT COFFIN (or was it casket?)
Base on Promos I'm looking forward to USA's "Burn Notice". I found TNT's earlier promos for "Saving Grace" uninteresting, but the last few were better. (The earlier ones were just Holly Hunter portfolios - I want something to tell me there will be some writing to go with the visuals)

That's a lovely family portrait...except that it took me a moment to realize that it was Laura's hand on Patti's right shoulder and Boyd didn't have two left hands! ::)

And I thought last night's episode was pretty terrific. I plan to rewatch it tonight.
It sure gave Corey Reynolds (SGT Gabriel) a chance to shine!

I've been washing the windows so that on the fire escape DR MBarnum can clearly watch me inside enjoying the air conditioning and eating pheasant.

Product placements don't bother me at all. They're a fact of life now, and I much prefer the real thing to someone opening a box that's labeled "Cookies" or drinking from a can called "Cola."
Product placement was widely used in TV shows of the 50s...and of course many shows, like Burns and Allen incorporated the commercial into the show.
And like MattH, I always thought it sill when a character uses a generic box of cereal...you would think they could actually make the box look somewhat like a real cereal box, even if it is a fake one.

No one should pass up the chance to see a Bollywood musical in a theatre!
If only you were coming to NYC this week you could be my date!
But then, of course, you may be only saying this because you will be safely 1000s of miles away.

From All That Chat:
On a side note who appointed you the authority on taste??? Hate to break it to you but just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean they have bad taste, only different taste. To say that "we're going to be suffering for Brantley's bad taste for years and years to come" is one of the most arrogant and ludicrous things I've read on this board, and that's saying a lot. I happen to agree with a lot of what BB writes and I happen to think my taste is pretty good.

No, no! We had a first run Bollywood theatre near our house and a wonderful Indian restaurant nearby. And they both closed!!
The theatre was a twin; one side was the dollar movie, which we attended, the other side was, especially on the weekend, chock full of young Indian folks. If we got there early we would sneak in and catch some of the movie.
There is a Bollywood Channel on Comcast but you have to pay extra for it.
Our Indian restaurant of choice now has a monitor which has a channel that's sort of like MTV for music videos from movies. Always VERY entertaining!
-
ps: should I save the return address for future reference? Or is that the old house...
It is the old house but the address should be good for another month, at least. We will still have that address, but we may not get out there every day to check the mail!

I just read at TV GUIDE on-line that due to disappointing ratings, TNT will be moving HEARTLAND to 8 p.m. on July 23 , and the 10 p.m. slot will go to SAVING GRACE (with Holly Hunter) that was going to premiere on WEdnesdays at 10, but now will be on Monday after THE CLOSER.

Anyone have any thoughts on the Courtyard by Marriott Convention Center in Washington DC? Also, is it convenient to Union Station?
But it would be a very long commute for BK ;)

The move is progressing nicely, thanks for asking. The old office is nothing but frustrating, but I just have to last a few more days. I went over while they delivered my conference table today and it took a little longer than expected. My cell phone rang as I was walking back into the office and it was the judge's secretary sounding very surprised I was walking in the office because Martha told her she had no idea if I'd be in today....this was at 3:00 PM .. You are correct! But up until they do the time change, TNT will re-air the previous week's CLOSER episode before going into the new one on Monday nights. Boy...it's going to be confusing for the next month. We didn't get good numbers last night and I think some felt that HEARTLAND was dragging us down.

Thanks to DR RedShoes, DP Colin and I caught up with the Tony Awards yesterday. We have no interest at all in seeing the winning musical. I hate those microphones as I did with RENT. "Grey Gardens" and "Curtains" woud be my choices.

Ok, now that's off my chest. I'm trying to decide if I'm going to just take Thursday and Friday off. It would mean taking 2 more vacation days that I could get paid for, but man, I'm really going crazy here and after tomorrow afternoon I literally don't have anything to do for 2 days. I could call in sick, I suppose, but I don't want to do that.

But how is the cat?????
;D The cat is fine. She & Yogi are doing very well together again. She likes to eat his food & he lets her. I forgot to ask if she has stopped crying all the time now she is back with Craig.

Back from rehearsal - worked mostly act one, which is finally beginning to take shape. I let her rehearse by herself for a couple of days, and it's just amazing to see that her moves were not what was blocked - and she has it in her script correctly.
-
It's pretty definite that Lauren won't be with us in NY. And it also appears that BJ can't make the trek due to his low financial condition - it's a pity, the latter, because he would be seen by everyone and it's such an important step not to let an opportunity like this go by. But, what do I know.
Lauren, who is in my friend's show, Bukowsical, IS going to do that in NY at the Fringe - she can afford that but not us - amazing.

Which one - the 8PM re-run or the 10PM new episode?
Anybody notice you're going up against the SOPRANOS on non pay TV? Since you re-run both the Closer and Heartland episodes, you don't get a clear reading on viewer support on just one showing! So, since I missed the second episode of Heartland, thinking I could see it at 8PM next Monday, I'll get to miss episode 2 and need to wait 'til July to see episode 3 And they wonder why they lose viewers! Guess I should just skip Saving Grace - they'll just jerk that around as well!

BJ is indeed coming along, so that's good. I just had to explain how things would work.
Lauren, on the other hand, has behaved so poorly that I'm really annoyed with her. As I said, she's in my friend Gary's show (which she would not be in were it not for the Brain) - it's playing the Fringe and she's taking ten days off from her job to do it, and not giving anyone ANY grief about it. But with me, for whatever reason, she not only wants her flight covered, but to be reimbursed for work missed - on top of that, she cannot miss more than two-and-a-half weeks worth of work, which would give me less than a week of rehearsals with her. Needless to say, I said no to everything and I let her know that I knew that she was not being reimbursed in any way, shape, or form for my friend's show. Of all the roles to recast, I think hers is probably the easiest, so I'm now on the prowl for someone really good.
-
Der Brucer and I have just been alerted that our elderly neighbor across the street is without air conditioning. With temperatures on the rise (along with the humidity), one of our other neighbors asked if we might have a room air conditioner or something to help.
I didn't think we did, but der Brucer had indeed packed one in the move from Long Beach.
He's giving it a good cleaning as I type.

...Lauren, on the other hand...I let her know that I knew that she was not being reimbursed in any way, shape, or form for my friend's show....
Or, maybe she's being reimbursed in other ways (nudge nudge wink wink).
It wouldn't be the first time that show biz has overtones of other businesses.

Glad about BJ!
You could find hundreds of suitable gals in NY to play Lauren's role, I think. Perhaps even better.
I'm just sayin'

Sayz Mr New Yawk Theatuh now that he's seen one off-off-Broadway show!
BK, I think you're being needlessly hot under the collar about Lauren:
1. She's known for at least two months that the show she's in was playing the Fringe.
2. This NYMF booking just happened 4 days ago; she's already adjusted her schedule for the month of August and now you're asking her to rearrange September as well. Perhaps if she'd known this two months ago, she'd be in THE BRAIN instead. Who's to know?
-
Well, be that as it may DR Elmore, I will still be
auditioning keeping an eye out for male type actors to play the other Brain roles whilst I am in NYC, so as to refer my favorites to BK.

I'm leaving. I need to get something to eat before I go to rehearsal and I need to pick up a vest for my costume...but I think I'll get the vest tomorrow. I ordered one on-line and THEN found this one locally (it's "gently used") for a little less than HALF the price. It doesn't matter what the vest looks like for the show. I just need to wear a vest and look like a waiter. I phoned the on-line place today and they said that it's already been shipped. :P I will be able to return it, but I won't get shipping refunded. :-\ I hate it when that happens. Even with the shipping though, the "gently used" vest will still be about half the price of the shipped one! It's worth it. I don't think I'll ever need a tux vest, unless I'm in another show where I need a tux vest. ::)

Today my boss was in town and we went through some final things and then he took me to dinner. We were joined by the other lawyer and his wife. It was a nice dinner at a restaurant I'd been anxious to try. The food was so, so but it was a nice view of the river.
So as were leaving and after the other lawyer and his wife were out of sight. My boss gave me a hug and handed me 2 envelopes, making a point to tell me which one was from him and then wished me the best and walked away.
When I got in my car and opened the one from him he had written a very nice note saying what an honor it was to work with me and had included an EXTREMELY generous gift certificate to Barnes and Noble. The other was from our office administrator and was very nice as well. They made me cry.
I have prepared myself for the fact that I was not going to get any acknowledgement from the people I work with in my local office that I'm leaving. It isn't even on the calendar. But the truth is this was my dream job for the first 4 years I was there. Things were so different then and the two people who gave me cards know that more than anyone.
I am sad that Nick felt he had to wait until no one was looking to hand me the cards, but it meant a lot to me that he did it.

Lauren called an apologized for the tone of her e-mail, which she didn't mean. She's known about Bukowsical's Fringe appearance for about six weeks, yes. But, it's all fine and I wouldn't have been hot under anything had the tone of the e-mail been different. We're fine now - of all the roles to replace, I think it will be easiest with Joyce, at least I hope so.

On a happier note, tomorrow is now my last day. After tomorrow afternoon, I won't have anything left to do at the office. So, I decided to use a couple days of vacation and take Thursday and Friday off. It didn't seem to bother anyone a bit.
Paul said he needs help painting the Mardi Gras float and the water tower, so if it isn't too hot I'll do that for a couple days. It's fun and it will be a nice break. Thursday night is also Mardi Gras, so I'll get some gumbo and other good stuff. If the weather is still hot, I have tons of things to do at my office....like designing my new website!

Hi all!
It's been busy, busy, busy!
A few updates: I heard from the guy at MOSI. He is still looking for Mom's star. I think it is pretty far out there and must be a fairly new discovery. Maybe the software he is using is out of date. Anyway the good news is that he hasn't given up. :)
Got my stress test back. I'm ok but was warned that I was very, very lucky it didn't turn into a major stroke. The part that worried him was when I said my arm was like a lead pipe and I couldn't life it.
If it every happens again I have to go right to the ER.
I was told about the "Golden" hour when there is something they can give you if they get to you fast enough that helps cut the effects of the stroke.
Anyway, we will just hope that doesn't happen ever again. I get a tingle down my arm every once in awhile but nothing bad--so far.
Still waiting to hear what the effects of the tax break will be. St. Pete is letting over 50 people go.
I am very worried about what is going to happen to the county. Well, let's be honest, to me. That's enough to cause anyone to be stressed out. It won't take effect until the end of the fiscal year but I wish they would say so I could plan if it's bad.
Wish I had some good news to give you but that's about all that's going on right now.
I have to run.
Laters, hugs and vibes!

Good evening, all! DH Richard and I met up at the DC Convention Center shortly after my earlier post, had our lunch at Zaytinya (lovely and delicious). We got our train tickets and hung out at Union Station for a while before proceeding to Chapters (A Literary Bookstore), to hear Susan Vreeland talk about her newest book, The Luncheon of the Boating Party. She is a delightful speaker. Of course, I bought the book and had it autographed. The only bad thing about the event was the bookstore cat. She was OK, as cats go, but I'm so-o-o-o-o allergic and now have a sore throat. We stopped and picked up some munchies for our "dinner" and have crashed for the night.

Lost Wages vibes for DR TCB.
DR EDISAURUS, the tall actor I was talking about was not a regular....his wife had had a heart transplant and Treat was talking to him near the end of the show about being able to see the donor.
-
I like THE EGYPTIAN too.
I have read the novel....in paperback....interesting....and just a jumping off point for some of the things that happen in the movie.
-
MR BK could always cast Mr Zach Spicer in THE BRAIN....although he will be in classes at Circle on the Square.

DR EDISAURUS, the tall actor I was talking about was not a regular....his wife had had a heart transplant and Treat was talking to him near the end of the show about being able to see the donor.
Oh! I thought you were talking about the episode that aired Monday at 10PM, but you were referring to the pilot.
That's Ryan Hurst, and I never realized how tall he was until I saw that shot of him and Treat looking into the hospital room and he was towering over him.
I love him! He was the best thing in the episode. He was on a series I worked on several years ago, called WANTED. I did the launch for this the same time as THE CLOSER, and actually liked the WANTED pilot better than the CLOSER. But when the CLOSER producer started getting upset that I wasn't always available when she needed me, the head of creative decided that two series were too much for one editor. The producer took it to another post house and it took two editors to do all my work, with an assistant! (I work by myself...) I wasn't happy about that at the time, because THE CLOSER was a 2-3 day job and they kept me on hold for the other days and would release them at the last minute. It was not a profitable year, and a drag after making a lot of cash working on both series.
Ryan played a very interesting charachter on SAVED, a guy with some real anger management issues, and we got some insight into the origins of that through his relationship with his father. He was also a born-again Christian so he was always very conflicted because he was the most violent member of the squad.
His performance on HEARTLAND was heartrending. He's a very interesting actor!
-
One of my favorite CLOSER regulars is Terrence, who is now assisting occasionally during autopsies. I was happy to see him reappear in episode 6!

As you know, I am helping with the entertainment portion of the LACC Foundation benefit - and they loved my idea of doing a tribute to LACC grad, Jerry Goldsmith, with the Young Musicians Foundation orchestra. So, today I made a call to the conductor who was suggested to me by my pal Jon Burlingame, and I just had a lovely conversation with the gentleman (he was a very close friend of Jerry's in his last ten years, and has conducted several Goldsmith concerts), and I'm happy to say he's said yes and we're good to go. The gentleman is a fantastic composer in his own right, Mr. Charles Fox, who has written many fine TV and film scores, as well as the hit songs Killing Me Softly and Ready To Take A Chance Again.

Some of you might remember seeing pictures of my coffee table, which has a very heavy glass top perched on the ears of rabbits. I have a lot of magazines on it to keep it weighed down.
It didn't work tonight---when we came home the floor was almost covered with magazines, mail, paperwork, etc. They had knocked the glass off the rabbit ears. Everyone looked rather guilty. I'm just glad it didn't land on a kitty!
-
Glad to know that you've got a talented conductor for your benefit, bk!
A lesser man would probably be a semi-conductor, I guess...
-
I believe I warned you, Matt!
No offense, DR TCB, but naturally I'd have to see it for myself.
And all the scenes with Cathleen Nesbit were grotesque, I assume on purpose, but still . . . .
-
LOL - cute photo, Edisaurus!
-
I had the most wonderful package in the mail today from Music Guy. Thank you, thank you! If we ever get the money to finish restoring our theatre, which has been promised a Moeller organ, you must come and advise/play a concert!
Greg was interested because he's miked pipe organs a few times (last time was for the NPR show EVENSONG) and loved the challenge of making it sounds great. He loved the recording. It was funny, because the puppet show he's been working on all week is called THE ORGANWISE GUYS and all the characters are internal organs with names like SIR REBRUM, PERRY STOLIC, etc. So after listening to the CD's, he feels VERY "organwise"!
-
I began my evening finishing the last twenty minutes or so of VICTIM. Always great to see the villains get what's coming to them especially the bigoted and smug female blackmailer.
-
I have a feeling that my little cow cat is the culprit since he always likes to come bounding into the room and leap on the table.
-
Next, I watched William Friedkin's THE BOYS IN THE BAND. Kind of a stolid transcription of the play to film, and everyone's line readings are very slow and deliberate. The pacing on the cast recording was much better than in the film.
Still, I'm not complaining. It saved Cliff Gorman's great performance for all time, and everyone else is very good.
-
It's been a sleep-deprived week so far so I'm going to wuss out and hit the hay. (Although what the hay ever did to me...)
Safe and restful sleep...sleep...sleep...to all!
-
I ended the evening with two MURDER SHE WROTE episodes. The first involved the death of a blackmailer with guest stars George Chakiris, Pamela Bellwood, Mel Ferrer, and Charles Haid.
-
Danise---thanks for reporting in.
~~~~HEALTHY BLOOD FLOW VIBES TO YOU!!~~~~~~~
-
Next was the story of the search for a long lost relative. Among the guest stars were Anita Morris, Sam Bottoms, Michael Beck, Marc Singer, and Mason Adams.
-
Of course, some may remember Charles Fox more for his title song to Happy Days and The Love Boat, and, more importantly...
LOVE, AMERICAN STYLE!
-
Dear reader Laura, can you give me a call right now?
-
I'm still full from my Subway Club, which, along with a couple of cookies and chips, is all I've eaten today.
-
Will we never get to page twelve?
-
Kitty cats!!
That's all I have to say.
Sorry.
The mother disappears and is replaced by the daughter. Daughter, Miss Underpants, can you have your mother give me a call right now?
-
I'll go find her.
-
I found her.
-
Dr Edi - cute cat photos. Callie likes to knock things off of table, too
-
Will we never get to page twelve?
In just a few moments.
Tomorrow I should be receiving my Cult Classics DVD from Warners, so I'll undoubtedly watch something from those various volumes. Don't know which yet.
I also noticed that I have THE FAMILY STONE on the DVR recorded from Starz! I've read some nice things about the film, so I'll probably get around to it tomorrow, too.
-
Off to bed now.
Good night!
-
Good night.
Ohmigod! It would be a cast of geriatric gymbunnies.
Gosh, I walked away with the screen still on HHW, so it looks like I've been sitting here not posting when I've actually not been near the computer screen for a long time.
-
I am now officially sitting here not posting.
-
At least not posting about anything of consequence.
-
Personally, I think I should go to New York and play General Mills:
a) I'm inexpensive
b) I take direction well, and
c) I am damned talented
We're talking the stage, not the bedroom!
No one knows anything about the Courtyard by Marriott Convention Center in D.C. and its relative convenience to Union Station?
I miss the artwork and style of the great LP covers of the 60's and 70's but I am impressed with the packaging of the recently issued Traveling Wilburys Collection. The new Paul McCartney "Memory Almost Full" special edition is also packaged well.
-
I guess it's been mentioned ages ago, but I've just received my Barbara Cook CD which has "No More" listed as from "The Frogs".
So much to listen to this week!
-
DR Singdaw...thanks for the package, it arrived today. I'm looking forward to watching it.
-
I am feeling very tired and emotionally drained. So, I am going to sleep and tomorrow will go to my last day at the office. Whew!
-
I am feeling like maybe I should eat something, but it would have to be small, and I have no clew as to what it should be.
-
I have finished a DVD and probably am done with my evening viewing. I think I need to take the air. I may even give it back.
-
Oh! I thought you were talking about the episode that aired Monday at 10PM, but you were referring to the pilot.
That's Ryan Hurst,
...
Ryan played a very interesting charachter on SAVED, a guy with some real anger management issues, and we got some insight into the origins of that through his relationship with his father. He was also a born-again Christian so he was always very conflicted because he was the most violent member of the squad.
The SAVED character you describe was Harper Sims, played by Michael McMillian - who does look a bit like Ryan.
Ryan was also in Medium, playing Allison's bother, I believe.
He was also the lead sceptic in TAKEN.
Guess I'm not writing the notes early tonight, although, I suppose, I could start at ten-thirty and be done by eleven. That would be nice, actually.
Good evening dear Esteemed, edited, rested, noshed, sinewy, and lusty BK --
And a very good evening to dear DR Jose and DR DerB....
-
I have had a very great time so far, here in NYC..... and I truly apologize to Larry, Jose, Fred, Slingchaw, and any other New Yorker's, for this HIDEOUS hot weather that I brought to your lovely city.
But I've already had some great walking, visiting, nibbling, etc., and tonight we went to see Grey Gardens. I loved it..... actually much more than I expected to.
-
Good Evening!
What a lovely - despite the heat and humidity(!) - day today turned out to be!
-
DR MusicGuy - You saw Grey Gardens tonight?!?!? Really?!?! I was there tonight too!!!
;D
-
And while walking leisurely around midtown this afternoon, dear Jose popped into a "high-end, specialty, Japanese, dessert" salon. I was thinking, "what an oxymoron" only because most of my Asian friends have always told me that our idea of "dessert" is pretty unknown to them.
Well...... Jose came out with a small bag, and gave me the most delicious cookie/wafer thingy. It was a wonderfully tasty double light "waffle" type cookie that was filled with a light but yummy vanilla cream.
And so, we elegantly walked at the side of Rockefeller Center, and nibbled on our tasty yummies, while the great golden Prometheus was giving fire to the world.
-
But I've already had some great walking, visiting, nibbling, etc., and tonight we went to see Grey Gardens. I loved it..... actually much more than I expected to.
And were you resplendent in pink?
der Brucer
-
Why, dear Jose you sly minx, you know that you were sitting right beside me !! :)
-
DR FJL - If I'm remembering properly, the Courtyard Marriott Convention Center is one or two blocks away from the Convention Center. The old Convention Center - so about four or five blocks from the new Convention Center. However, it is right around the corner from Ford's Theatre, and it used to be the Riggs Bank Building.
As for Metro access, you'd be a few blocks away from a couple of different Metro Stations: Chinatown/Gallery Place, Metro Center and Navy Memorial. As for access to Union Station, from Metro Center it's three or four short stops away. *Metro Center has a couple of different exit and entry points, so be sure to keep track of the most convenient exit to the hotel. Although, from the Chinatown/Gallery Place station, it's just one block away - if you get out on the Gallery Place side.
Here's the link to hotel on Marriott's site:
Washington DC Convention Center Courtyard Marriott (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/wascn-courtyard-washington-convention-center/)
And here's the link to DC's Metro system:
Metro - Opening Doors (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/wascn-courtyard-washington-convention-center/)
Any other questions, just ask, or give me a call.
*Now, you do know/remember that Signature is not Metro accessible? And the cab ride from DC to Shirlington will not exactly be cheap either - and a lot of the cabbies have some major 'tude about crossing the river into Virginia (or Maryland). *And just make sure to arrange for the cab ride back into DC ahead of time too - although, I think Signature does offer call ahead cab cards in the lobby.
-
...the great golden Prometheus...
Sounds like the name of an Organ you'd like to play.
And no, I was not resplendent in pink...... I'm afraid I was rather rumpled in short-sleeved white print shirt. Dear Jose, however, was resplendent in pink..... very dashing!
-
And were you resplendent in pink?
der Brucer
No, but I was. :)
-
Oh... old news. ;)
-
DR Ginny - Glad you enjoyed Zaytinya. I should have suggested some of my favorites to you, but I really don't think there's anything on that menu I don't like. Truly. -However, aren't those "footballs" of bread just amazing?!?!?
-
DR Rodzinski - WHAT?!??!?!? Is Kati Roll Company closing?!?!?! Say it ain't so! That's been one of my stand-bys for a quick lunch whenever I play auditions at the Equity building across the street. And I know they've been doing great business... I mean it's always been busy when I've been in there. -Unless there happens to be another Indian wrap place in Times Square that I don't know about.
-Now I'm wondering if their location in the Village on Bleecker will be closing too. However, there is that other paratha place up on 103 and Amsterdam, so all is not lost.
-
DR TCB - Safe Travels! And have a wonderful time in Vegas! -And remember, "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas." ;D
-
DR Danise - Thanks for the update. Just remember to breathe, and to let yourself relax every now and then.
-
DR Jane - So... Did Ioana lock the lady's door?
::)
-
And I think I'll log off and fall over now ..... the "free Wi-Fi" connection here at my room is sketchy at best.... it drops out and comes back on with great regularity.
To quote our wise "sage of the keyboards"....
"Hmmmmmm" ?
However...... after the show tonight we met up with the dashingingly handsome and talented DR Jason, and the 3 of us enjoyed 2 outrageously good desserts. I'll let dear DR Jose fill in the details. Oy !! Such good!!
-
bk - As for sublets... I'd say you'd have a better time finding something closer to your arrival. I know that's sort of scary to do, but with the way the contract cycles work - at least for actors - most of them don't know yet what they're doing this fall, or where they're doing it. The fall audition cycle starts up in about two weeks, so by mid- to the end of July, more sublets should be popping up. Of course, since some of these sublets will be from people who are going out to the middle of nowhere to make next to nothing, I'm not sure if those accommodations would work for you, but... ya' never know.
-
Well, there were actually three desserts:
1) Chocolate Coconut Banana Cream Pie
2) Double Chocolate Pudding Pie (with Candied Hazelnuts)
3) John Rodriguez - our waiter. ;) -And he has an audition for Jersey Boys tomorrow/today too! -I left my card for him. ;D
-
And I have to say, The Brooklyn Diner is now on my "recommended" list. Well, I know our waiter is at least. :P
-
Well, I'm playing more ACL rehearsals in ten hours, so I should head to bed myself... But before I do...
-
DR elmore - and MusicGuy too - Don't forget your umbrellas tomorrow. Alas, it could get stormy tomorrow. Along with the heat and humidity.
-
OK - I'm off to bed...
Goodnight.
One of the musical directors I was keen on couldn't work out his sched, so I'm still looking.
bk ~ Your tickets for Cabaret, oh Cabaret, oh Cabaret, are on the 4th row, center. You'd better not tease up your blonde locks into some puffy hairdo or wear that big pimp hat -- or start talking on your cell phone during the performance -- cause I'm in the row right behind you and I will tap you on the shoulder ... and/or or report you to the management ... so you'd better be on your best theatre patron behavior...
Oh, spoo---I told you I was tired! I was talking about Ryan in WANTED in the paragraph above and then called it SAVED (another TNT show that took the place of WANTED the following season.) because I always get the one word names of these two shows confused even though they're nothing alike.
