Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a banquet, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home or something like that.

And the word of the day is: CELERITY!

Welcome twenty GUESTS.

Will we never get to page two? I wish we could get there with CELERITY.

A very happy birthday to Mr Barkalot.

I should be in bed. But before I go...last night, we had a complete run-through of "Shrew" and it all worked! The entire show (with intermission) ran about two hours and 20 minutes, which is pretty close to what the director wants! I just need to change where I do one costume change and I'll be all set! If any PNW Hainsies & Kimlets want to see a different kind of "Taming of the Shrew (http://www.olytheater.com)," tickets (http://www.buyolympia.com/events/)[/color] are available...a LOT of tickets are still available. ::) And they're only $12!

And the word of the day is: CELERITY!
This sounds like someone was trying to write "celebrity" and "celery" too quickly and smooshed them together.
-
Work beckons.
It will not be fun, I predict. We've the start of Fourth of July Week hitting today, and we're gonna be slammed with customers. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, but the touristas on these holidays take everything so personally.
It's a holiday, people! Relax, let the good times flow.
That translates as: Stop being total jerks!
*sigh*
-
Hi, Ben. Bye, Ben. Give your oatmeal bowl an affectionate scrub for me.
-
And now I'm here alone. I caught up and Woody left.
It looks like bad weather on and off all day in NY. I know Barnum already has travel issues. It may even affect AMTRAK (hope not). MusicGuy was lucky to come in earlier in the week.
So are we still meeting at 6pm at the Information Booth at Grand Central?
As I mentioned earlier in the week (if I recall correctly), Anthony won't be joining us. He will be in New Jersey (why is it "in New Jersey" and "on Long Island") at a family BBQ. Relatives are visiting from Florida and he's going out to join the crew.
I hope to have lunch with MusicGuy this afternoon. He has my work phone number so I will sit by my telephone working on AT&T and counting the hours until his call :D
-
I must wash my bowl.
-
Hi, Fred!
-
In honor of Francois (I know he's on vacation so he won't be here for 3 weeks), I'm listening to Friday Night is Music Night.
-
As I end my frenzy I say goodbye for now (a Sondheim reference).
-
Hi Ben. or did I miss you while I was catching up and washing my Special K cereal bowl.
-
Are there any HHW group plans for Saturday late afternoon or evening that I can join?
-
I don't know about Saturday plans. We will probably discuss that this evening.
Fred, we are going to get a reputation if we both wash our bowls at the same time.
-
Morning gentlemen.
-
DR Ben do you know of "Hinge & Bracket"? I've been listening to them today. (saw them back in about 1976!). DVD will hopefully be out from the BBC before Christmas.

No, I've never heard of
Hinge & Bracket (http://www.hingeandbracket-official.co.uk/)
But I did find a Web site (see above) so now I know who and what they are.
-
OK, to be honest, I didn't really "wash" my cereal bowl, I just ran water in it and it will be washed by the dishwasher later. :)
-
By dishwasher, I mean the electronic dishwashing machine, not Skip.
-
Not to beat a dead horse but Stephen Farrow did post here. That was back before the board changed format. There are posts in June of 2002 and July of 2003, back in the day when FreedUnit was a poster and all sorts of other people.
He is also a registered user on this board although he has never posted. His user name is sfarrow.

Lucky you, to have such a convenience in your high-toned luxury apartment building ;)

DR Tomovoz, I also have David Campbell's latest CD...I think I got it from Footlight Records [R.I.P.].
-
Quick Thursday morning greetings before we get our taxi to Union Station! With the weather issues, DH Richard and I are glad we're traveling by train today!
See y'all later!
-
Good morning, all! I was awake a little before 7 AM to find DR MBarnum's message about the flight delay. I called his cell about 30 minutes ago and got no answer so I am hoping that he is now en route.
Yes, everyone: 6:00 pm, Grand Central Station, near the Information Booth in the center of the room. I look forward to it immensely.
Much as I think XANADU is essentially a brilliantly polished turd, the Playbill article with the librettist and director was impossible to read after Mr Ashley a director I've worked with admitted to seing the film of XANADU 148 times!(???). Well, good for him. Since I've worked on a musical with him, I suspect the nearly-complete stylization is from the choreographer whose work was wonderful. All in all, though, I had a great evening with DRs MusicGuy, Jose, and Jason. I didn't even mention how wonderful the food at Sardi's was because the company, their kindness, and good humor were so much wonderful.
And now, I'm very uncertain about my feelings for this new toilet seat.

Whew! What a storm we had last night!! Driving home, I was engulfed by the heaviest deluge I've ever seen. The thunder and lightning were flying fast and furious. And then: yes, hail! I'm surprised my car isn't dented all over. I got home to find no power and flooding in the neighborhood - not me personally, fortunately. The storm abated somewhat, but the thunder and lightning returned, to Zach's great unhappiness. The power came back on sometime in the wee small hours of the morning.
Hope MBarnum travels timely and safely.

***HAPPY BIRTHDAY*** to Mr. Mark Bakalor

Birthday Greetings to the gone but not forgotten Mr. Bakalor.

I woke up to reports of flooding and torrential rain, etc., etc., etc. I'm glad I slept through it. Although I don't think it was as bad in Chelsea. We had wet sidewalks when I left for work this morning but no indication of heavy rain.
-
Happiest of birthdays to Mark Bakalor
-
I think we are getting the tail end of that storm in the northeast. It's raining here ever so slightly but I woke to a bad headache which means the barametric pressure is all over the place.

FJL:
When was Herringbone originally written?
-
Thanks for all for their theatre reports.
That is one of the best fringe benefits of HHW!
:)
-
I always thought that the Doris Day/Robert Goulet studio recording of Annie Get Your Gun was one of the worst "Cast" recordings I ever heard. Awful new orchestrations, tempos etc. You'd think with Day and Goulet it would be great.
However anyone heard the Bernadette Peters recording and what is their opinion of that one.
I own three:
The Lincoln Center 1964 revivsal with Ethel Merman.
The "complete" Studio recording based on the Broadway original
The complete Studio recording based on the 1964 Lincoln Center versin with Judy Kaye.

Why? Is she running for public office?

DR Michael S, have you heard the delightful train wreck of a performance of "Anything You Can Do" with Sutton Foster and Marc Kudisch on Broadway Unplugged 2?
They each go up on their lyrics, at different times, and then can't stop laughing!
-
Is she running for public office?
Even better...Flyer Idol! With, I take it, a chance at a recurring column in the local rag.
-
Compared to most others the Bernadette Peters AGYG is not very good (IMHO).
I have the Original Cast Recording (1946), the 1964 Lincoln Center revival, the 1990 Kim Criswell Studio Cast Recording and even though it's not that good, I have the Bernadette Peters recording.
I had no idea there were so many cast recordings of Annie Get Your Gun. According to
Cast Album Database (http://www.castalbumdb.com/title.cfm?TNumber=22)
there are 29 different recordings in many different languages.

I forgot I also have the Soundtrack with Judy Garland tracks as a bonus

Villains: I'd certainly have to go along with Elmore in naming Mitchum in NIGHT IS THE HUNTER. I'd add Brian Donlevy in BEAU GESTE; Conrad Veidt in THE THIEF OF BAGHDAD (1939); Jack Palance in SHANE & as super-gladiator in BARRABAS (A man who really enjoys his villainous work).

Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up.... And if that mosquito that has been flying around the living room ends up landing on me and biting me.. Why I'm gonna.. Get bit I guess. :-\

Good morning fellow DRs!
It was an early night last night; delightful company was kept - briefly, as said - but, it looks like there's more to come in the upcoming weeks. ;)
TTOD:
As much as I detest the film, I like Richard Roxburgh's villain in MOULIN ROUGE!
Alan Rickman in DIE HARD
Jeremy Irons in DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE
Al Pacino in DICK TRACY
Christopher Lee in all of the LORD OF THE RINGS movies

Ah, the weather. Yes, the weather.
I guess I missed most of the really bad stuff last night when I was in the theatre, in the subway or sleeping. I kept seeing flashes of lightning outside, but I never heard any thunder or heavy rain or hail up here in Harlem. It was raining when we got out of the Helen Hayes last night, but even that let up after a few minutes. Guess I should turn on the TV to see what's going in my 'hood. Although, weather.com does says that there will be storms off and on today, so... :-\
-
Michael S - I'm not sure when HERRINGBONE was written, but its New York debut production was at Playwights Horizons in 1982, opening July 1, 1982, so this year would be the 25th anniversary of that 1982 production.
-
As for the Topic of the Day...
The Mother in "Like Water for Chocolate". -And she does die. :)
-And I'm sure others will come to mind as my brain continues to wake up.
-
DR singdaw - If the weather does get crazy again this afternoon, and Metro-North ends up shutting down again for a bit... Consider this your "Hall Pass". -I still remember that train ride back from Westport during that one storm we had - well, more like that train-train-walk-subway-walk-subway journey back to the city. Better to be safe than stranded somewhere on the tracks between here and Norwalk.

DR elmore - John McDaniel? ;D

Oh, and I'm guessing tonight's contingent will consist of the following:
Myself
elmore
MBarnum
Ginny and Richard
Ben

singdaw (weather and trains permitting)
TPunk(?)
Dan (the Man)(?)
Who am I forgetting?
-
And don't forget your umbrellas!
And comfortable and water-resistant shoes!
-
bk - I'm sure you'll meet Baayork eventually. Heck, if you still need a choreographer for The Brain... -Although, remember, she doesn't really tap. And she really doesn't. ;)
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARK BAKALOR!!!
-
And we'll discuss the Friday walking and eating jaunt tomorrow night too. I have a sense it may just turn into a short constitutional around part of the Upper West Side (a.k.a. Levain ;)) due to the weather. However, the forecast right now is for some showers in the morning, and then a cooler, mid-70s, and somewhat less humid day (Whew!).

Mother of Pearl, what am I doing up at this hour? I was having the loveliest dream, and then somehow (in the dream) I couldn't find my car keys (although I always have my spare set on my person) and then I woke up and now I can't sleep. I guess I shall attempt to go back to sleep shortly.

Another feather in the cap for Herringbone/:
http://thephoenix.com/article_ektid42581.aspx
Herringbone in the Berkshires
By CAROLYN CLAY
June 27, 2007 1:24:10 PM
HERRINGBONE , which recently opened the Williamstown Theatre
Festival, looks like the winner of a reality-show challenge to write
the world’s weirdest musical — in this case a one-man song-and-dance show about a Depression-era eight-year-old possessed by the spirit of a malevolent tap-dancing dwarf. The 1982 work, with book by Tom Cone, music by Skip Kennon, and lyrics by Ellen Fitzhugh, has as its narrator a man named for a suit fabric who — in the course of amiably laying out his grotesque life story — plays 10 more parts, frantically hoofing his way through several jumpy musical tours de force. As if he didn’t have enough to do in WTF artistic director Roger Rees’s spirited yet casual staging, he also puts his shoulder to a small platform bearing a pianist and pushes it around the playing space. Indeed, it was a collision of performer and piano that on opening weekend sent Tony winner B.D. Wong — more widely known as Dr. George Huang on Law & Order: SVU — to the hospital for 30 stitches. In addition to bleeding for his art, Wong proved he has talents undreamed of by fans of the TV show.
As Herringbone, he drifts into the WTF Centerstage’s towering black box along with the pianist (who doubles as a deaf-mute manservant), the bassist, and the percussionist who make up the band. Dressed in vest, bow tie, and saddle shoes, he introduces his hard-times history in a song that asks, “What’s life without a window ledge?” And the strange story of young George, his impoverished Alabama family, and the warring ex-vaudevillians who change their lives inevitably leads to just such a precipice. But first the son his parents hope will be their meal ticket is custom-suited in herringbone and taken to a retired entertainer for acting lessons. Somehow the spirit of the teacher’s former vaudeville partner — the amphibian half of an act called the Chicken and the Frog — invades George’s pint-sized body so
he can wreak havoc on the man he blames for his death and realize his own show-biz dream. (“The Chicken and the Frog,” in which body snatcher Lou tells the tale of his hurtling demise, is one of several bravura set pieces, this one utilizing a yellow rubber glove and a green bouncing ball to represent the principals.)
The story is as fantastical and arbitrary as they come. But as a
vehicle for a performer, it’s NASCAR-worthy (and should not be driven by an amateur), providing cheeky vaudeville opportunity, family melodrama, and a big hunk of Sybil. Wong — tenderly interacting with the little suit that stands in for George, defining the male and female characters through precisely mimed gestures, and carrying on interior wars between a Billy Crystal–like Lou and the vulnerable George — gives an extraordinary performance. You know who he is from his facial expression — before he opens his mouth to assert a Southern, sleazy, tough, or tremulous vocal identity. And he almost makes the co-opting of George seem not kinky and ridiculous but tragic. No small feat.

Ooooh, I like this one!
I saw Margaret Tyzack recently in two wonderful performances:
COUSIN BETTE
MIDSOMER MURDERS' Death in the Garden
I was unfamiliar with her prior to COUSIN BETTE, but what a wonderful actress! In MM, she plays a grandmother who simply oozes poison. It's British TV, of course, but I can't imagine playing such a character in a long-running stage play.
Anyone else a fan of Margaret Tyzack?
-
I know all of the arguments about the Doris Day-Robert Goulet ANNIE GET YOUR GUN. The orchestrations are bothersome, and neither star seems to get into character much. Still, they're so dang perfect for those roles that I enjoy the heck out of that LP. Always have.

LOVE HER!
She has a nice, meaty role in the Joan Hickson/Miss Marple NEMESIS, and she's simply perfect for the role.

I saw Bernadette Peters on stage in AGYG. I couldn't help but be impressed with the voice, but she wouldn't be my first pick for that role.

MATTH,
Did you see COUSIN BETTE?
GAWD!!!

And now I must get put together, and decide what to wear today....
actually, it seems more like I'll decide "what to get soggy in" today. As we were walking last night after the theatre, we crossed halfway across Broadway out to the center island. As we were standing there waiting for the light to change, a cab roared by and hit a massive puddle, and I was sprayed in a classic "movie stunt moment." And I mean soaked on my right side of my pants.
DRs Jose and Jason were so sweet to pretend that I didn't look like a very soggy old crazy bag lady! But we all managed to eat dessert anyway! :)

I'm guessing I'll watch THE QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE today, too.

Tonight is the last ever episode of STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP, a sadly unfulfilled promise of a series from Aaron Sorkin. I did grow to like some of the characters while really detesting others. The show's drama quotient was ratcheted up considerably in the last few episodes, and the show became much better as a drama rather than a smirky comedy.
Also tonight is the last episode of THE STARTER WIFE, another series I've enjoyed. I'd love to see more episodes. As far as I know, no decision as yet been made about its returning.
-
Happy Birthday Mark Bakalor!!

Me! Me! Me! She's wonderful in I CLAUDIUS as Derek Jacobi's mother.

A Freudian slip perhaps ;)

As usual, DR td and I are on the same page. When I read the topic of the day in the notes, the very first person who came to my mind was Alan Rickman in DIE HARD.
As wonderful as he was in that film, the very first thought that entered my head was Rickman's delicious Sheriff of Nottingham in "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves".
Rickman walked away with that film...and was literally robbed at Oscar time without even a nomination to recognize his superb work. He was the class of 1991 and all others pretenders.

Damn!

I wonder if it really IRKS screenwriters that all their best lines are inevitably attributed to the film stars that utter them onscreen.

I thought of Alan Rickman too but I was so busy typing John McDaniel, I forgot! I also like Eleanor Bron in the remake of A LITTLE PRINCESS.
-
Well, you can't say you weren't invited! :)
No indeed, and the invitation was greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, June and July being unncecessarily heavy bill paying months (house insurance, car insurance, quarterly taxes) eliminated the possibility of a visit (or ANY vacation this summer).

I don't like the Bernadette Peters ANNIE GET YOUR GUN album much at all. Tom Wopat is fine as Frank, but Bernadette's accent comes and goes, and the revisal aspects just aren't enjoyable.
Unintentional camp. One of the worst things I've ever seen. It improved with Reba McIntire, but Peters gave a Tony-winning performance as dismal as Lauren Bacall in DOG OF THE YEAR.

She sure is! Another favorite performance of hers.

In the Totally Useless Trivia department, since MATTH has been watching a lot of MURDER SHE WROTE I will mention that one of my family members was in the crew on that show. They all think VERY highly of Ms Lansbury, I might add.

I'm between a rock and a hard place at the moment since my scedule is based on DR MBarnum's flight. I called his cell phone and left a message, which I hope means it was turned off when he boarded the plane. I spoke to DR Ginny, and she and Richard rebooked their train to a 10:30 one out of Union Station. Hopefully, the four of us will neet at the box office to CURTAINS at 5:00 to pick up the houseseats before heading to Grand Central.

Well... I have a hopefully short audition session to play at Noon, so I should get ready now. If any plans should drastically change, just give my cell a call (DR elmore, singdaw, MBarnum, Ginny, etc.).

Did he send you the flight info? or at least the airline? If you have the airline, you should be able to do a flight search on the airline's website based on the departure and arrival cities. Yes, some other options may show up, but you might be able to see just how delayed the flights out of Portland have been this morning.

Hmmmm this will take some thought....
TOTD:
I am more a fan of diabolical baddies than ones from the action features. I do have to agree with the comments about Alan Rickman. He does make a great baddie anyway you look at it. I have seen several things where Rickman was the baddie and he is good.
From Doctor Who (cheesy villains i know but really..) The Master played by Anthony Ainsley and the Daleks
The soaps have had a few good classic baddies : (I will only give the character name right now for the actor's name escapes me at the moment)
Mitch Laurance - OLTL
Stephano DiMera (Classic Days 1980-1991) - Jospeh Mascolo
Helena Cassadine (Classic GH)
I have to give Matt AShford a kudo here. He played a serial killer as a short run role on OLTL in 2004 named Stephen Haver. Matt was downright creepy to say the least and sinister.
Villain of bad taste....
Many of the script writers today... James E. Reilly is the main one - horrid, horrid writer.
Theatre:
The Chlldren's Hour -- excellent play!
The Bad Seed
I will probably think of more later...
-
In the Totally Useless Trivia department, since MATTH has been watching a lot of MURDER SHE WROTE I will mention that one of my family members was in the crew on that show. They all think VERY highly of Ms Lansbury, I might add.
TV GUIDE did a survey back in the late 80s-early 90s of TV productions, and Angela Lansbury came out #1 as far as confidential comments on her professionalism, loyalty, consideration, etc. I've rarely heard much of anything negative spoken about her.

JetBlue, Portland OR to JFK!

Flight 166 is due to land at JFK around 12:43 pm. My first tracking, but definitely not my first stalking.

According to JetBlue's Web site MB's plane departed at 4:45am (Portland time I assume) and is scheduled to land at JFK at 12:43. No other information is available

I just got off the phone with MusicGuy. I'm about to have lunch with him at Wai Cafe.

I just had a scare. I couldn't find my set of guest keys, so I thought maybe I could rig a rope to the fire escape for DR MBarnum who would have to climb down it holding his luggage in his teeth. However amusing I thought it could be for the neighbors, I decided to keep looking. I just found them.

I must say i'm really enjoying these past episodes of STUDIO 60 and can't wait to see tonight's final episode.
I'm also very curious to see who the bottom 3 couples will be on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE. I really loved hok and jamie last night. But part of that was the choregraphy.
In some ways it's so unfair that certain couples get brilliant routines while others get merely average ones.
I must say though, i was really choked up at Cedric's tears. I do like him. And same with dominic. Wow. I can't believe how well he is doing.
Also i thought the whole thing with pasha and jessi so weird. He had to dance with some other lady. And no matter what jessi has to dance to stay (if she is able)???
Btw, i did not like the krump routine (sara and jesus). I do not like him very much. I love anya and danny.

TIME TO BUY A COW? (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,287135,00.html)
Milk Prices Could Soar to $5 a Gallon by Summer's EndThursday , June 28, 2007
By Catherine Donaldson-Evans
Come fall, when the kids head back to school, Mom and Dad are likely to find that a gallon of milk for cereal will cost them more than the gas that got them to the store to buy it.
The national average price for the calcium-rich drink that "does a body good" could hit a record $5 a gallon by September, MarketWatch reported Tuesday. The current average price is about $3.50 a gallon nationally, say dairy experts. That's more than the current national average gas price, which is $2.975 a gallon, according to AAA.
High fuel prices, drought and a spike in the cost of feed and dairy operations are all kicking up the price of the frothy, white beverage. Booming international sales and last year's lower farm milk prices, which slowed its production in the United States, are adding to the soaring costs.

GA SOLUTION TO PRISON OVER-CROWDING (http://news.aol.com/story/_a/states-handed-out-poisoned-toothpaste/20070628091609990001)
States Handed Out Poisoned Toothpaste
By WALT BOGDANICH,
The New York Times
Posted: 2007-06-28 11:37:25
(June 28) - After federal health officials discovered last month that tainted Chinese toothpaste had entered the United States, they warned that it would most likely be found in discount stores.
In fact, the toothpaste has been distributed much more widely. Roughly 900,000 tubes containing a poison used in some antifreeze products have turned up in hospitals for the mentally ill, prisons, juvenile detention centers and even some hospitals serving the general population.
The toothpaste was handed out in dozens of state institutions, mostly in Georgia but also in North Carolina, according to state officials. Hospitals in South Carolina and Florida also reported receiving Chinese-made toothpaste, and a major national pharmaceutical distributor said it was recalling tainted Chinese toothpaste.
The Food and Drug Administration has advised consumers to discard all Chinese-made toothpaste, regardless of the brand.
State officials in Georgia and North Carolina said all the tainted tubes were being replaced with brands made outside China. The officials said there had been no reports of illnesses caused by the toothpaste.

I'm not surprised. She was known as a very caring, compassionate person on the set. After the Northridge earthquake she showed great concern for all who worked with her.
She also came backstage after a production I was in at Bluth Brothers Theatre and was quite kind with her comments. (Of course we WERE good!)

Beverly Sills (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070628/ap_en_ot/sills_cancer;_ylt=Aih8qiRqznzDeNTfm5I0i5JX24cA)
That's sad news about Ms Sills. I remember seeing her in a performance of GIULIO CESARE, the opera that made her a star, at the Cincinnati May Festival. She tossed off ornamentation as if it were the easiest thing in the world and took her bows with a bet-you-can't-do-what-I-just-did! attitude. I loved her sense of humor and I remember a story she told on Dick Cavet's show, as I recall, about her touring days as "Americas' third string opera company star" and her recitals for local music clubs. She said she performed in a small town in Kansas where the new was published once a week. On the cover page there were two photos; under a photo of a dead cow the caption read "Beverly Sills sings tonight," and under her photo, the blurb read "Stinking smut invades Kansas."

Right you are. It looks like they couldn't do much of a box at Fox unless they repackaged already-released stuff, too.

I began my afternoon of view with the completion of the MURDER SHE WROTE episode set in Moscow that I began last night. Also among the guest cast was Adrian Zmed.
-
I had time for one more MURDER SHE WROTE episode, and this one was set back at Jessica's alma mater with the arrest of one of her dearest professor friends who confessed to a murder he didn't commit. Among the guest stars were E.G. Marshall and Dinah Shore (in a lamentably bad performance).
-
Then, I put in Chris Marker's haunting sci-fi photo-montage film LA JETEE. Being a fan of TWELVE MONKEYS (though admittedly it has problems), I was very curious to see the French film from which it was adapted. Could see all the influences, but those startling photo images with that languid narration and the combination of simple sound effects and choir music, just made for a very memorable experience.
-
I watched a season 1 "Ghost Whisperer" last night entitled "On the Wings of a Dove" that was incredibly moving.
David Conrad, who plays Jennifer Love Hewitt's husband, has an accident while transporting a victim to hospital. The victim dies, and his ghost attaches himself to the husband in order to get to Melina (Love Hewitt) whom he needs to help him get forgiveness from folks he'd seriously harmed. All through the episode, Melinda's husband is as if possessed. It's creepy because he's affected by the darkness of the ghost, making him moody, abrupt and disconnected with reality.
-
I then watched the video interviews of filmmaker Jean-Pierre Gorin as he talked about Marker and the film LA JETEE. Some of what he had to say was rather elusive and bordering on doubletalk, but there's no denying his reverence of Marker and LA JETEE in particular.
-
Tonight I'll watch the other film in the set - SANS SOLEIL, another I've not seen before.
-
I also watched an entertaining comedy called "Bedrooms and Hallways" starring Kevin McKidd, James Purefoy, Jennifer Ehle, and several other distinguished actors. Had never heard of it until rummaging through Amazon.com to find other McKidd or Purefoy performances (both were INCREDIBLE in "Rome", season 1, and I wanted to see other things with them).
It's many things, but mostly it's a fantasia of young people identifying themselves in one way only to find themselves attracted to the opposite kinds of partners in various social situations. Funny stuff, actually, and beautifully acted.
-
Tonight, I hope to see either "Colossus of Rhodes" or "Land of the Pharaohs".
Totally depends upon whether UPS FINALLY delivers this package or not. I don't blame UPS, although UPS DID have it at their facility Tuesday evening. I could have gotten it yesterday HAD THEY wanted to deliver it.
No, the real culprit is Amazon.com who shipped it "third day delivery" despite the fact that I am a charter member of Amazon Prime with guaranteed 2nd Day delivery on all items marked "Prime eligible" which the Cult Classics set is.
Dan (the Man)....I don't want to hear it.
-
Where is everyone?
-
Just read in VARIETY (and at Playbill-on-line) that COMPANY is being filmed and may be presented on a future GREAT PERFORMANCES telecast (a la THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA). This would be great to have that marvelous score captured ob video even if the production is non-traditional (which, I suspect, is one reason they were interested in filming it for broadcast).
-
It's good that there's nothing of interest coming out next week on DVD. It's a chance to save a little money and to get this mound of DVDs I have waiting for me watched.

Well, I just decided to pop back up to the apartment since my audition session ended early(!) today. -And I even had time to meet DR MusicGuy for a nice quick trip through Steinway Hall, and a late lunch at Bouchon in the Time-Warner Center.

Well, I guess I should get ready to hop on the D Train back to midtown.

Good morning, H/Ks!
TOD:
Ooooh, I like this one!
I saw Margaret Tyzack recently in two wonderful performances:
COUSIN BETTE
MIDSOMER MURDERS' Death in the Garden
I was unfamiliar with her prior to COUSIN BETTE, but what a wonderful actress! In MM, she plays a grandmother who simply oozes poison. It's British TV, of course, but I can't imagine playing such a character in a long-running stage play.
Anyone else a fan of Margaret Tyzack?
Der Brucer and I saw Ms. Tyzack perform in London, in the play Lettice and Lovage opposite Maggie Smith. (This was while the play was finishing up previews, with it's original ending.) There are not many actors who can hold their own opposite Maggie Smith, particularly when Maggie Smith is at her most flamboyant. Ms. Tyzack did so with ease.
-
I couldn't get on the internet this morning....damned Comcast.
So I missed all of last night's comments and the cross country Barnum today.
-
Rumors are swirling that Saturday's performances of Broadway's Company revival will be taped for ultimate broadcast on PBS. The production closes this weekend.
I think that this is wonderful news! Another Sondheim on video (even if it's not the original) and another Broadway show on video! :D
-
Loving the choices for TOD:
will second:
Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Iselin in MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE
Patty McCormick as Rhoda in THE BAD SEED
Brian Donlevy in BEAU GESTE
and add:
Carroll Baker in KINDERGARTEN COP
"Who are you, mean lady?"
"I'm your fairy godmother."
And she is standing in line at the drugstore with her grown sons who have escaped from prison, and she is buying a hot water bottle and an enema tube.
-
Hopefully the dinner is in full swing and camera are clicking!!!
-
I am very afraid that the judges' comments and the tears and humble pie of Cedric the Destroyer (and Shauna's talent) will put them VERY high in the voting this evening....and cause another talented guy to be sent home....my fear is that it will be Neil on the bubble.

Be forewarned: Doctor Who returns!
Friday, July 6th, the Sci-Fi channel will be airing the second Christmas special, The Runaway Bride, AND the first episode of the third series, Smith and Jones, which introduces us to Freema Agyeman as the Doctor's new companion, Martha Jones.
And be prepared - later in the season, one of the episodes is titled Daleks in Manhattan. Somehow, I doubt they'll be seeking gainful employment as taxi cabs!

A couple of months ago, I watched "The Runaway Bride" on YouTube! I don't know if it's still there, but it was good enough for me to watch...I will watch it again on the Sci-Fi channel. Also, the first two episodes with Martha (I'm pretty sure that two have been recorded on my DVR) have been broadcast on CBC from Canada! I'm listening to Jane Siberry's "When I Was Boy". It's only taken me 14 years to discover this!

Hello DR Jennifer.

Actually it was Matt H who led me to "Deadwood" - from there to the soundtrack and then to Siberry. An interesting journey. A journey also enhanced by the music of Gustavo Sanaolalla. I didn't get out until 10:30 this morning & it was somewhat warm and muggy. I'm sure you would have found it cool and refreshing.

I would love to, Jane. But you'll have to take the photos to share with us.

POSSIBLE PARTY (ASSUMING THERE'S ENOUGH INTEREST) AT OUR PLACE ON SATURDAY JUNE 30, 5:30 TO 7:30 PM, giving enough time for people to get here from their matinees and get to evening performnaces afterwards, wiothout missing any of the party.
Unless there are other plans for that time, of course.
-
Jane - to be honest, it was my own procrastinating that caused this timing conflict. :(
-
I know about procrastinating, I excel at it.
-
'night
-
I just read the saddest email that was sent to my church. It seems that Sister Michelle is dying of cancer and would like to donate the $2 million from her late husband's estate into our account so that we can continue the work of God. Isn't that noble of her?
-
LOL-And how much will it cost you, before you receive the gift?
-
I tried to put off my procrastinating, but just wasn't able to do it.
-
;D
-
I'm listening to Jane Siberry's "When I Was Boy". It's only taken me 14 years to discover this!
A friend in Toronto introduced me to her music 20 years ago. "The Speckless Sky" is one of my favorite albums. I introduced my DH to her music and she is now one of his favorites. We were talking about her today, so I happened to look up her website and see that she's coming to Atlanta in October. I've always missed her performances here so we're going to make a point to see her. She's in a tiny club with a good sound system.
I'm not sure what to expect now that she has changed her name to Issa and given away all her worldly goods and gone in a new direction. Her site looks kind of new-age-y. But I'm willing to give Issa a try...

Will we never get to page nine?
Here and then gone away.
-
Are we STILL on page nine?
Maybe . . . .maybe not.
-
RANDOM QUOTES OVERHEARD AT DINNER TONIGHT:
"Where do you get the scrambled brains?"
"My umbrella is NOT pink!!!"
"Well, it DOES match my outfit!"
"MEAT!!!!"
[and not necessarily in that order...]
;D
-
DR Ben, I got a kick out OF Beverly Humphries giving away tickets to showin Wales by the Hot August Knights, the Neil Diamond cover band. They're from Atlanta, and a very fun band.
My favorite memory of them is going to the birthday party of one of my TNT producers. He donned a wig and performed a duet of "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" with "Neil". It was quite touching, actually!
-
Before I got back to another CHris Marker film, I watched another MURDER SHE WROTE episode. This was the one done as a film noir with Mike Connors providing much of the hardboiled narration and much of the episode filmed in black and white. Other guest stars were Elizabeth Ashley, Andrew Prine, and Ken Swofford.
-
There was mirth, food, laughter, and legs...
And it was delightful. I even got to meet former DR Noel, although he didn't tag along for dinner.
Thanks to all you DRs!!!! Love yas!
-
Next, I watched SANS SOLEIL. This was a type of memory book of Marker where he noted images, thoughts, sights, and sounds of four different cultures visited: Japan, Africa, San Francisco (referencing VERTIGO locations), and Iceland. Obviously eclectic, but there were certainly some haunting images (the shocking slaughter of a giraffe is something I know I'll never forget). Probably too long at 103 minutes. I think it could have lost about 20 minutes of footage and been more effective for me.
-
I find that one so-so...so go know!
:-\
Ron, I too love BEDROOMS AND HALLWAYS. The scene where Tom Hollander is tied up to the bed and singing "Happy Birthday" makes me laugh so much. Jennifer Ehle is Rosemary Harris' daughter and she and I laughed about the movie while we were recording in 2001.
-
got the pm's Jane!
-
Next, I watched another featurette on the disc, another video interview of professor Jean-Pierre Gorin discussing SANS SOLEIL. Better than the haphazard interview snippets that accompied LA JETEE, but 17 minutes of discussion where lots of clips interrupt was probably too long for what he had to say.
-
But where are the photos, DR Singdaw?
-
WAY past my bedtime...
Smooches, kids!
-
While I had a problem or two with it, I have also spoken here several times of my liking BEDROOMS & HALLWAYS. Glad to be in such good company.
-
Well, la di da, I must have forgotten to log out when we left Crystal City at 9am. Has it looked all day as if I were sitting here like so much fish? Sorry!
We did indeed switch to a earlier train, left DC 40 minutes earlier than planned and arrived at Penn Station 20 minutes earlier than planned. From the train I saw:
A snowy egret
A blue heron
Roofers on top of the Philadelphia Museum of Art
Elephants at the Philadelphia Zoo
Lots o' graffitti
We settled into our hotel and met DRs Elmore, MBarnum, and FJL at the Curtains box office, then proceeded to Grand Central and the East Village for Indian food - yum! Dessert at the Australian ice cream place and now we've crashed!
-
Glad to hear that the NYC HHW gathering was a success!
-
DR Singdaw, your post about the overheard quotes reminds me of the day that DR Sandra asked folks to post their favorite punchlines. We had a list of punchlines without jokes.
-
I ended the evening with tonight's THE STARTER WIFE. Very nice resolution of the major conflicts which have carried the series this season. I would certainly love to see more of these characters.
-
But where are the photos, DR Singdaw?
Tomorrow, DR DearReaderLaura, when I can tell one end of my camera cable from the other!
Now, off to bed - 'night!
-
AT least you had a nice journey Ginny! Glad to see you arrived safely in NYC!
I agree Laura, singdaw, where are the pictures :)
-
Also, the star of the documentary about Neil Diamond tribute artists: FEEL NEIL, by a local filmmaker.
-
Ginny, did you get your manicure?
(I've still never had one, but it's on my "life list"!)
-
Is page eleven anywhere to be found?
-
Is page eleven anywhere to be found?
At some point it will happen.
-
Guess I'll do some writing and then head down to bed.
Good night!
-
I have driven everyone on two message boards out of their collective minds as reagards this mystery soundtrack I'm trying to identify. We posted the main title track and everyone's got a different opinion about what composer, but no one has come near even suggesting a film.
-
Issa you is or Issa you ain't my baby?
-
Give my reagards to Broadway - and give me back my kneeguards.
-
Midnight at the oasis.
Putting my camel to bed.
-
Are we at post 300 yet?
-
Since it may have gotten lost near the bottom of a page, I reiterate:
POSSIBLE PARTY (ASSUMING THERE'S ENOUGH INTEREST) AT OUR PLACE ON SATURDAY JUNE 30, 5:30 TO 7:30 PM, giving enough time for people to get here from their matinees and get to evening performances afterwards, without missing any of the party.

I am restless and anxious in the City of Studio. I finished a motion picture on DVD over an hour ago, but just was too antsy to watch anything else, so I've just been wandering aimlessly from room to room, or sitting at this here laptop.
-
I can't believe Bruce has forgotten that on Saturday evening, he'll be attending my show...
Your show?
I thought Masteroff, Kander & Ebb wrote the show,
-
Good Evening!
Well, since I received a phone call earlier this afternoon... "Hi, Jose. I'm just calling to confirm for tomorrow - auditions from 10:000-Noon." -Oh, OK. So, I'll be playing auditions tomorrow morning from 10:00-Noon, and then re-commencing with the HHW Weekend in NYC activities.
But before I retire for the evening...
-
BK, have you checked phone messages during your restless wanderings?
-
Yes, got your message - thought it might be too late to call. I'll e you later.
-
Or, if you're up, you can call me.
-
Well, I believe the upcoming tour of Evita is now cast. <knock wood> We saw five people today over two hours. And that was that. *And now I think I'll have to listen to the OCR again just to "clear my head" as it were. -I mean, if you can't sing the high falsetto stuff in "The Money Kept Rolling In", well... :-\
-
I watched ZERO HOUR last night, and like DR MATTH was surprised to see Mr John Ashley in the credits....and even more surprised and dismayed at the way he was used.....as was DR MATTH.
I, too, watched ZERO HOUR last night! Immediately following, I watched AIRPLANE! I'm very happy to have BOTH in my dvd collection. Although it had been eons since I had seen AIRPLANE!, I found myself chuckling at little things in ZERO HOUR, while re-watching AIRPLANE! I found myself laughing out loud most of the time with an occasional HHW groan thrown in for good measure.
-
Well, we did indeed have a splendidly splendid gathering tonight. We all met at Grand Central Station: DRs singdaw, Ben, elmore, Rodzinski, MusicGuy, Ginny, DH Richard, MBarnum and myself. And as previously mentioned, DR Noel stopped by for a bit of a visit while we convened at Grand Central. :)
-
After we all boarded the 4 Train downtown - or was it the 6? - we deboarded at Astor Place and proceeded to walk over to the Sixth Street for some Indian food at Taj Mahal.
Poori, Naan, Samosas, Pakoras, Mango Lassis, Banana Fritters, Raita, Chutneys, Basmati Rice, Saag Paneer, Mattar Paneer, Lamb Karahi, Chicken Livers Taj Mahal, Shrimp Bhindi, Chicken Korma, Chicken Tikka Masala, Tandoori Chicken, etc., etc., etc.
Lots of food. Lots of laughter. Lots of good cheer!
-
And after making a trip to Australian Ice Cream and Chocolates, DR MBarnum made a stop into an Indian video and music store. Then after a few minutes, DR singdaw went in... Then after a few more minutes, DR Ben went in... Then singdaw and Ben came out of the store... Whew! DR MBarnum did eventually make it out of the store with a few purchases in hand.
-All the while, DR elmore was providing running commentary and translation of the Bollywood movie that was playing in the window. :)
-
Pictures were taken by DR Ginny, and those should be posted sometime in the next couple of days.
-
DR FJL - Count me in for Saturday! :)
-
I am a Wandering Jew.
-
Great, Jose. So if you're coming, that means there's nothing specific previously planned groupwise for those hours, right?
-
bk - You have mail.
As for lining up a Line Producer and other personnel, some people I spoke to today suggested placing ads on Playbill.com and CraigsList.
-
Great, Jose. So if you're coming, that means there's nothing specific previously planned groupwise for those hours, right?
You are correct, DR FJL. I think the only "plan" was to meet somewhere for dinner before Curtains. And that place had yet to be decided.
-
DR FJL (again) - I believe DRs MusicGuy and MBarnum will be meeting me for lunch after my audition session. Would you be interested in joining us? -I know DR MusicGuy would like to meet you, but he's heading out Saturday afternoon, so he won't be able to attend your partay.
-
Jose - What time tomorrow and what part of town would that be? If it can be around 1 or so in the theater area or thereabouts, that would work for me. Or i could join your group at 1, if your lunch is otherwise already in progress.
-
What hotel is MusicGuy staying at?
-

Oh, that should work out nicely actually. I'm in session at Ripley-Grier until Noon, and I know DR MBarnum wanted to check out a shop down near Penn Station anyway. So, maybe we could just set lunch for 1:00 in the Theatre District. -And then the "rest of us" can head up to Levain for dessert. :)
-
Your show?
I thought Masteroff, Kander & Ebb wrote the show,
Yes, but Cason makes any show he is in his show!
-
What hotel is MusicGuy staying at?
Let's just say The Oak Room and The Round Table. ;)
-
-All the while, DR elmore was providing running commentary and translation of the Bollywood movie that was playing in the window. :)
I would have loved to have been there to hear that lol :)
-
Are we STILL on page twelve?
-
The Round Table? He's staying at the Excalibur in Vegas? :)
-
I just finished watching Return to OZ. Wonderful movie.
-
Well, I need to be up in six hours, so...
Goodnight.
-
I'm the only one in the jernt?
-
Well, me and the nine GUESTS.
-
Sad to be all alone in the world.
-
I guess page thirteen is out of the question, unless I go into frenzy mode.
