Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both cool and jazzy, and now it is time for you to post until the cool and jazzy cows come home - they're having mellow grooves and well as mellow MOOves.

We had an amazing number of correct guesses for the Unseemly Trivia Contest.  Here was the question, which I thought was a real baffler:

This revival of a play by a well-known playwright (but not one of the playwright's most well-known plays, at least to me) eked out a mere three months, despite its illustrious company of players.  But, what makes this production fascinating is that its director would soon direct a wildly successful musical, and its cast, save for three people, had or would all star in classic Broadway musicals.  This play also had incidental music by a composer who would go on to write the music for the wildly successful musical that this revival's director would soon direct.  All but one of the people who had or would star in classic musicals would win Tony Awards for their performances.

Name the play and the author.

Name the cast members who had or would go onto star in classic musicals, name the musicals, and name the Tony winners.

Name the director and the musical he would soon direct.

Name the composer who wrote the incidental music and who would soon write the score to the successful musical that the director would soon direct.

Apparently, it wasn't a real baffler, and here are the answers:

Too True To Be Good by George Bernard Shaw

Glynis Johns, A Little Night Music Tony Winner
Robert Prestion, The Music Man  Tony Winner
Cyril Ritchard, Peter Pan,  Tony Winner
David Wayne, Finian's Rainbow, Tony Winner
Ray Middleton, Annie Get Your Gun

Albert Marre, Man Of La Mancha

Mitch Leigh

We had correct guesses from the likes of Dan the Man, Jbelles, Jed, Noel, FJL, Jeffrey Kaufman, and Michael Shayne.  I put all those names into our handy-dandy Electronic Hat, which randomly chose Jed as our High Winner.  So, if Jed will send his address, he will receive a sparkling prize.  Congratulations to ALL our winners!

late  posting, as ususal. Favorite Mancini is Whistling away the Dark, which i first heard , not in the movie, but at a  Julie Andrews  concert in Detroit, with Jay Johnston as her opening act. If I'm sad, that song cheers me up; If I'm already cheerful, it keeps me cheerful. Miss Andrews vocal is my desert island song.

It is about 4:15 a.m. (Left Coast Time).  I just arrived back at the house from Las Vegas.  I see that I have a lot of catching up to do.

I am off to bed (alone).  I have truly missed all of you.  More later.

Welcome back, DR TCB! And good morning, all!

As I type this, Mr Kevin Spirtas is singing "The World of Tomorrow." As for today, I have an appointment at 9, which I believe wil go well, then a trip to a locksmith, followed up by my arrival at the violated Toyland; I hope the door is still in place and nothing else is missing.

I had an email from my bass playing friend Kirk and he and I are getting together around 8 tonight for a nosh and some dish. I haven't seen him since his trip to Italy, so there's bound to be some good gossip.

I'm a bit ambivalent about Mr Mancini. While I love a lot of his music, I remember his work best from the albums of his music that aren't exactly soundtracks: "Punch and Judy" in CHARADE is one of my favorite tracks on the recording but it's hardly heard in the film. On the other hand, I find his arrangements of others' work often kitschy and badly dated.

TOD: Charade

Throw your hat on Mary's corner for me.

The first time Ant and I went to Minneapolis he went down to the corner of 7th Street and the Nicollet Mall and  threw his hat in the air just like MTM. Unfortunately that corner has changed. Dayton's no longer exists. Oh, well. Life goes on.

We also drove over to Mary's first house, not the second one which was an apartment complet just a couple of blocks from the West Bank of the U of M campus. The first one where Rhoda lived on the top floor and Mary had the amazing studio. It was hard to recognize because they had painted it and the trees had grown so much that they hid many of the features of the house.

My iPod is acting up this morning--it refuses to link up with iTunes and keeps clicking and pretty much locks up my PC.  The usual remedy for this is give it a good hard smack down on a hard surface (this is actually what is recommended on a number of iPod help sites), but it doesn't seem to doing the job today.  I guess Apple has sent out the self-destruct signal to the older models.

I ended up with a bad cold from rehearsal last night.

I am not pleased with the first evening's results, but that's okay.  You cannot direct a musical sitting down.  And if you are going to use the prompt book for your blocking, make sure that your script is the same as the one we have, and be MORE prepared....or even a little prepared.

Hopefully tonight will be better.

I still have the final episode of STUDIO 60 that I haven't gotten to.

I see that I recorded BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS off the Fox Movie Channel. I didn't buy the DVD set when it came out, so I may watch this again just to remind myself how truly awful it is. (I know several folks here are big fans of the movie. Please don't take offense.)

I had Special K with strawberries. It is too hot here for oatmeal.

I eat oatmeal in the cool air-conditioned atmosphere of my office. We have a lounge/kitchen area with a cooking area so to avoid waking up Anthony I take my breakfast to the office. I then browse the newspaper (on-line) and catch up on e-mail, etc. It's all very civilized.

I also eat the oatmeal every day because it helps with my cholesterol. It's one of the few advertising slogans that seems to hold some truth.

Sheesh!  In our accumulated mail, which Richard picked up at the PO this morning, we have a fundraising letter from Summer Youth Theatre, whose production this year is Cinderella.  The letter says,

"It debuted in 1957 for a special one-time performance on PBS to a record audience of 107 million viewers."

A few clicks on the PBS website reveal that PBS was not founded until 1969.

Wasn't the original broadcast on one of the major networks, which were pretty much all we had back in 1957?

It was CBS for both versions. The 1957 version starred Julie Andrews and was only broadcast once. The 1965 version starred Lesley-Ann Warren. PBS entered the picture when, in 2004, they broadcast the Julie Andrews version of show for the first time since 1957.

I'm not sure if anybody here mentioned it. But i did read a story about it last week.  Apparently one network rushed their show to premiere right before the other. Although the other network says they had been planning the show for a while.

I guess it will depend on the rules of the show. Because even if the shows sound the same. I think the rules could make one more interesting than the other.

Chicken. For a dollar a piece.

But you can also get a few other things for a dollar. Collared greens, potatoes, fish soup...

Then fried catfisth for $2.

The whole restaurant is just a window in the back of a nice restaurant.

Ah...this does sound familiar.  I think DR JoseSPiano did tip us off to this place within the past week or two...

CBS!

Next, I watched TROG. It's bad, of course, but this is THE best i've ever seen it look. I didn't see it at the theater, so the only times I've ever seen it have been on TV, and TV prints have always been grainy, faded, full of artifacts, and, of course, full frame. There wasn't a spot or splotch on the film at all!

And poor Joan. She had to have been reading at least some of her dialog off cue cards. At certain points, she wasn't facing the person she was talking to but a little up or down from them as she talked.

To finish out the afternoon, I opened MEDIUM - Season 1 - and watched an episode from it. This was the one where Ariel dreams she's a girl named Sarah being held by an ogre in a castle. I suppose this was one of the first episodes where we realized Allison wasn't the only one in the family who could have meaningful dreams.

Just back for a moment.  Had a nice e-mail from a potential musical director, who I immediately like.  We'll speak this afternoon - he's the assistant MD for The Drowsy Chaperone, and did the same for The Producers, both on B'way and on tour, and has conducted both shows many times.

Got a proposal from the general manager I've been speaking of, but it's way too much money (he gave me a ball park low-to-high end yesterday, and this proposal is the high).  I'll just have to ask if he can do the low and go on faith, if not I've got to find someone else.  This company is really good and I know he'd do a great job, but it just eats up too much of our budget - even his lowest eats up too much of the budget, but I think we'd save in other areas.

Guess I'll head down to do a little reading and then back to the viewing. The Allison Janney movie I'm going to be watching is a 2005 film called OUR VERY OWN. It isn't rated which makes me suspect it never got an official theatrical release. The liner notes mention an audience awaard at Sundance or some other such festival, but it must not have sold for general exhibition.

The Costumer, and therefore, the theater.

Back from a meeting, which was interesting.  Like I needed something else to do, but I've agreed to supervise a recording project for Lynda Carter - it happens in about fifteen days - basically I'll run the session and lend my good ears, then Vinnie and I will mix it.  Not much money, but every little bit helps, and I like her, so it will be fun.

Spoke to that Musical Director chap and liked him very, very much.  I offered him the job, he's accepted, pending checking with his boss on Drowsy Chaperone just to make sure he's covered for the few dates he'd have to miss.  That's a big load off, and I just hope there aren't any conflicts.  Whew!  Wrote the general manager on bended knee to see if we could work something out.  Otherwise, I'll move on to the next person, or I may just ask dear reader Rodzinski to be my line producer.

Before I go I must add that the gods were certainly smiling on me when I requested the limo service to drive me to the airport...my driver was a wonderful, wonderful guy from Egypt (grew up in Cairo) who had only been in NY for a little more then a year. His name was Gudda (sp?) and he is a 34 year old chef (he got his culinary degree in Australia, where he lived for about 10 years)...however, he discovered that most places in NYC hire very low wage people to cook...so he found it more economical to work as a driver...more relaxing also.

Anyway, he and I talked and talked and talked the whole hours trip to the airport! What a great guy! He was astounded that I knew so much about Egyptian pop music (I told him Amr Diab was my favorite modern crooner) and movies...he couldn't get over it! Even even turned off the George Benson that was playing on the stereo and popped in some Arabic pop for me!

He told me I needed to get a nice Egyptian wife...but I told him I would prefer an Egyptian husband...he laughed and then told me he would find me two (2) Egyptian husbands, and how would I like that!! LOL!

He also laughed when he found out we both liked Bollywood movies (which are popular in Arabic countries)!!!

I think Gudda would make a fine husband  ;)

He truly was the frosting on my NY trip! What a way to go!

Ah, yes, Piece of Chicken, I have mentioned that previously - how soon ye forget.  ;)

They originally started out just by selling pieces of fried chicken.  They were basically selling off the extra pieces from the kitchen of Jezebel.  You plunked down a dollar, they gave you a piece of chicken.  And they chose whether you got a breast, wing, thigh, or leg.

After a couple of weeks of being in business, they started to expand their menu: piece of catfish, chicken livers, rib tips, collards, mac'n'cheese (good, but on the sweet side, imho), chicken soup, corn muffins, etc.  And they also started letting people specify which piece of chicken they would like.  All in all, a very happy and welcome enterprise.

So, as DR Jason mentioned, I did indeed go to the put-in rehearsal for Kevin Worley.  It went quite well, and I was able to congratulate him after the show too at the stage door.  And we also supped as Westway Diner.  The fries were particular tasty tonight.

And then I saw Frost/Nixon....

WOW!!!!!!!

I had no idea what to expect, and, frankly, I was blown away by the whole production.  The writing, the acting(!), the technical elements - a true WHOLE.  I remember studying Watergate, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc., in high school, and I even vaguely remember the actual broadcasts of the Frost-Nixon interviews, but tonight, sitting in that theater, there were times when I did not know what was going to come next - true suspense!  The pacing of the play is quite simply masterful, and Michael Sheen and Frank Langella keep that internal clock ticking the whole time, along with the rest of that immensely talented ensemble.

It's running for a few more weeks, and I think I may try to see it again.
Title: Re:COOL JAZZ
Post by: JoseSPiano on July 03, 2007, 09:22:28 PM
While sitting in The Jacobs, I could also sense - and sometimes hear - a very palpable visceral reaction from some of the audience members who had obviously lived through that era and had been affected by it.  There were small cheers every now and then when a flaw of Richard Nixon was highlighted, and there were even some hushed boos when comments were made about the great losses of life - on both sides - during the Vietnam War.  And during the one pivotal moment toward the end of the play, it was literally one of those "you could hear a pin drop" moments.  Now that's great theatre!

Post by: TCB on July 03, 2007, 09:24:39 PM
The first time I became acquainted with PHANTOM OF THE OPERA was when I purchased the two-CD complete version of the Original London Cast.  Although I enjoyed a lot of the music (sorry, a guilty pleasure), I found that I didn't listen to the CDs very often because there was so much filler on the two CD set, that I often found my mind wandering while listening.  Then I discovered the one CD, OLC recording of PHANTOM.  What a difference!  The one CD version became one of my favorite listening pleasures; and it still remains so today.

I have previously seen the stage version of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA three times.  I saw two National touring productions in Seattle; as well as the Broadway production.  (Again, a guilty pleasure.)  However, even seeing the show live on stage, there have always been moments of tedium for me.

Last Friday night, I attended a performance of PAHNTOM: THE LAS VEGAS SPECTACULAR at The Phantom Theatre in The Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas.  The performance I saw starred Brent Barrett as The Phantom, Elizabeth Loyacano as Christine, and Tim Martin Gleason as Raoul.  The difference between PHANTOM and POTO is very similar to the difference between the two-CD and the one-CD version of the cast recordings.  The show is the same, but all of the filler has been removed.

This is not to say that this is in any way a Greatest Hits version of POTO.  This is PHANTOM minus the extra baggage.  The result is a tighter, more focused; and in many ways. a far more powerful production than any of the three versions of POTO that I have seen on stage.

Brent Barrett, as The Phantom, is, as the title suggests, spectacular.  This is a Phantom portrayed by a true singer and actor.  Even before his first appearance, Barrett's voice, drifting hauntingly through the theater; brings the focus of the show to where it belongs, on the Phantom.  PHANTOM is now truly the story of The Phantom, not Christine and Raoul's story or of the famous chandelier's story.  Barrett is romantic, powerful, mysterious, threatening, and in the end, heartbreaking.  The final scene in The Labyrinth is a stunning tour de force for Mr. Barrett.  Stripped of his mask, exposed to his beloved Christine, as well as the world as the creature that he is; Barrett strikes at the heart and the emotion of every member of the audience.  Although, I have always felt sorry for The Phantom in the final scene; Mr. Barrett's stunning performance brought me to tears.

Tim Martin Gleason is everything a Raoul should be; handsome, dashing, with a glorious singing voice.  Elizabeth Loyacano is a stunningly beautiful and convincing Christine.  Unfortunately, for whatever reason, Miss Loyacano seemed to talk-sing many of her songs, particularly the more operatic songs.  It might not have been as important in another musical, but since Christine supposedly possesses this angelic voice; the lack of a true singing voice distracted from the overall effect.

The remainder of the cast is uniformly talented.  From the wonderfully hysterical Monsieurs, Andre and Firmin, to the spooky Madame Giry; this cast is first rate.  Special mention must be given to Elena Jeanne Batman as Carlotta.  Ms. Batman managed to make Carlotta, not only a properly vain prima donna, but a hysterical foil for The Phantom, as well.

So, does the Vegas PHANTOM live up to the title, spectacular?  Absolutely!  From the breath-taking special effects (thank you chandelier for living up to the hype) to the jaw-dropping theater itself this is a total spectacle.  At 94 minutes, without stopping for an Intermission; PHANTOM is a magnificent roller-coaster ride of a musical, that should be seen by everyone.

With all the announcements of closings...are there any interesting shows preparing to open?

Well, Xanadu officially opens on July 10.  ;D

DR TCB: Glad to hear you enjoyed PHANTOM in Vegas. POTO is one of my guilty pleasures, as well. It's the show that got me hooked on musical theatre when I was 13 and I've loved it ever since. I recognize its flaws - and there are many - but I would love to be a part of it at some point in my career (assuming my career ever starts). It's fun to stand in the alley between my theatre and the Majestic and listen to the overture through the doors...

Oh...  And since I did not go to Amy's Bread before my show, I went afterwards.  Tonight's selection was Aunt Somebody's Whole Lemon Pie - I can't remember the exact name of the aunt.  In any case, it looks and tastes like a Lemon Chess Pie, however, it's a bit more substantial than that.  As the name implies, it's made with whole lemons - there are bits and piece of the rind and pith in the custard, and that, I guess, helps to balance out the tartness of the lemon and the sweetness from the sugar.  They also contribute nicely to the texture of the pie too.  I may just have to sample it again sometime.  ;)

And thanks for the Phantom-Vegas report!  Is John Leslie Wolfe still playing one of the Mssrs.?  *I coached him before his final audition for the company.  :)

Thank you all for the Welcome Homes.  It is always nice to come home to family, even if only on the internet.

Yes, Jose, John Leslie Wolfe is still playing Andre.  He was hysterical, as was Lawson Skala as Firmin.  I was going to mention the actors by name, but I thought I was pushing my luck writing as long a review as I did.

Thanks, DR TCB, for the confirmation.

And one cool tidbit about Tim Martin Gleason - They gave him the option of alternating shows - like they switch off the actors playing The Phantom - but he said he preferred singing all the performances each week, and just having a regular understudy instead of an alternate.  And, if I recall correctly, he's actually singing almost the same amount of music as he did on Broadway when he was Raoul, but just in 90 minutes now instead of spread over two and a half hours.

Well, I'm playing the matinee of ACL tomorrow/today - my first show on Keyboard 2 - and then, apparently, there's some sort of cookout/party here at the apartment.  ???  And then more ACL first thing Thursday morning, so...

Goodnight.

After the show Friday night, my friend, Mike, and I wandered down to the orchestra pit, where I asked to speak to the Stage Manager.  I told him I was here to see Mr. Barrett.  He asked if Mr. Barrett was expecting me.  I said, "Oh, of course."  He went back to the dressing room to confirm that Larry Moore had not yet reported me to Brent as a  stalker.  When he came back, the stage manager said that they were having some problems with one of the set pieces, so it would be a few minutes.

A few minutes later, the stage manager escorted Mike and I backstage and into the cast and crew elevator where we descended into Brent's labyrinth.

When we got off the elevator the first person we encountered was Elizabeth Loyacano (Christine) who was chatting with a few people.  Unlike what you would normally expect, Ms. Loyacano is even more beautiful close up than she is onstage.

After that, we were taken down the hall to the make-up room where the make-up artist was still removing Brent's makeup.  I went in and introduced myself to Brent; and Brent, the make-up artist, and I chatted for a few minutes while they finished up.  It takes about an hour to put on The Phantom's make-up every night and twenty minutes to remove it.  As Ron, the make-up artist said, the combined time is just about equal to the entire running time of PHANTOM.

(To be continued)

Right now I am finishing my final edit of a Jason Graae music video. Edited to the song What's New Pussycat! from The Burt Bacharach album. It is a combination of video and photos that I took mixed with cd covers, headshots, production photos and photos of him with other stars.

(Part Two)

When Brent was finished having his make-up removed, he came out of the room, met my friend Mike, and we all chatted for a while.  I told Brent that Larry sent his best, and that BK had sent a kiss; both of which I delivered verbally.

Let me say, that Brent Barrett is not only one of the most beautiful men I have ever met (truly the WSMA); but he is also one of the nicest and friendliest people I have ever met.  It was obvious that Brent was exhausted (and with good reason) but he was charming and gracious to both of us; until I was the one that finally said that we should let him go.

The best news of all is that Brent told that us that he has signed on for another year of playing The Phantom.  That might come as a disappointment to those who were hoping that Brent would return to New York and to the cast of PRINCESSES.  However, it is fantastic news for anyone who has a chance to get to Vegas in the next year.  Don't miss a chance to see Brent in PHANTOM.  He is awesome.

By the way, as we were talking to Brent, Elizabeth Loyacano came by with some friend of hers from New York, who wanted to meet Brent.  We chatted with her for a few minutes, and she was extemely delightful and down-to-earth.

Glad you liked Brent, who will, of course, be appearing in our fundraiser come November.  Had dinner with Walter - of course, I was so bloody hungry I ate too much, so diet starts on the 'morrow.
