iPod is merrily playing a selection from one of the greatest albums ever made - Bill Evans With Symphony Orchestra.  I've spoken about this album often, but I'll say it again - if you have never heard this brilliant and astonishing piece of art, you need to buy the CD posthaste - it's fairly inexpensive and you will never regret it.  It's one of the most addictive albums ever, with the incredible orchestrations and arrangements of Claus Ogerman.  Just go order the damn thing!

Instrumental music doesn't usually interest me, I must say (a Martin Short reference)...but I listened to the samples on Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/Bill-Evans-Trio-Symphony-Orchestra/dp/B0000046UD/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-7691389-4094464?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1183709356&sr=1-1) and I really like what I heard, so I'm going to give it a shot and buy a copy. :) Now I'll have two Claus Ogerman CDs! ;D

Good morning, all! I've been out of bed since 6:15 to bid on an eBay item.  Last night I registered with e-snipe to bid on it, and I wisely got up early to check on things.  I'm not blaming e-snipe but I do find it interesting that at 6:15 I could not sign on to eBay since something had happened to my password.  I cancelled the e-snipe, changed my password and won the item around 6:50 am!

Today, I return to Toyland for some edits, then my pharmacist, and then back here for more work on Mr Spirtas' charts.  My interview for a new bio of Vito Russo was a lot of fun yesterday, and I look forward to reading the book when it's finished.

TOD:

Good Morning. Just finished catching up after doing the deed and various other errands.

I have a bunch of CDs here which I will listen to one last time before I try to sell them at Academy. They are second copies (that's the problem with having a large collection, sometimes you buy something you already have) so there is no need to keep them.

A collection of Deanna Durbin's greatest hits
The highlights CD of Unsung Irving Berlin (this isn't a second copy but I now have the 2-CD set so I don't need the single CD)
Sunday in the Park (Original Cast)
Ben Bagley's Frank Loesser Revisited
Loesser by Loesser
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Company in Jazz
The Beatles Past Masters Volume One
The Beatles Past Masters Volume Two
Title: Re:THE TITULAR ME
Post by: Ben on July 06, 2007, 05:24:25 AM
Just yesterday I picked up three other CDs (to replace 3 that I'm getting rid of  ;D)

Ben Bagley's Jerome Kern Revisited (the first one, I think there are 3 on CD, 4 on vinyl)
Lost in the Stars
Annie Get Your Gun the London "Cast" with Dolores Gray. It's not very good, IMHO. The songs are out of order and it's not very well produced. There are also "bonus" tracks of other songs by Irving Berlin sung by Dorothy Squires, Alice Faye, Dinah Shore and Rosemary Clooney and I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm done by Les Brown and His Band of Renown. It's one of those LaserLight (Stanyan Records) CDs released in 1995. I do like Miss Gray and thought it would be nice for the collection but I don't know how many times I'll play it again after this first listen.

We must do the laundry this evening, then we will go out to eat, then relax until 10pm when The Vicar of Dibley is shown on Channel 21.

Tomorrow we head uptown for a game night.

Sunday is plan-free. Perhaps I will work on finishing the next volume of Showtime reviews since I've promised people that it will be out soon. I need to finish the liner notes and get the order together so I can begin burning the CDs.

DR Edi,  I probably didn't use iTunes the way it was meant to be used.  Generally, once I loaded music from a source, I deleted it from my PC's hard drive to save on space.  But as long as the songs remained on my iPod, iTunes would keep track of them.

And during the two years or so that I've owned my iPod, I actually purchased very little music through iTunes:  just two full albums (Martha Reeve and the Vandells greatest hits and Paul Simon's Graceland) and about ten or so single songs.  And quite a few of those were free downloads gained through a Pepsi bottlecaps offer about two years ago.

I had a point to make here, but it's drifted out into the ether...

Is it really morning???  Oh, I'm glad I'm not officially open yet. I haven't "gone out drinking" for a long long time, but that's essentially what I did last night and now I remember why I don't like to do that. Doesn't take much for my stomach to rumble and my head to hurt.  But I had a good time and was able to be supportive as Linda relived her first week or two of Katrina.   She's so devoted to rebuilding New Orleans, it's just got to be outrageously depressing

I'm not a Dodd supporter, but when I was looking for Paul Simon info I found this on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=di1-G-VeQ2E   It's a video of Dodd playing baseball at the Field Of Dreams in Dyersville, IA yesterday. So if you want to see what it looks like today, here's a video - it's pretty much the same as it was in the movie except I don't think the fence was around the house in the movie

RE: yesterday's copyright issues and copying...I often will make what are considered back-up copies of DVDs which I have been known to share with others...however, I would not ever copy a legit release for resale.

As for grey market items...well, I have no problem purchasing grey market DVDrs of movies and vintage tv shows that companies like Universal, etc. can't seem to feel the need to release...some of these studios have a plethora of classic and not so classic films from the 30s, 40s, and 50s sitting in dusty warehouses...and by gosh I want to see these movies! So when collectors who have transferred their 16 mmm collections or old to DVD want to offer them up for sale...well, I am all over that! And I feel no guilt. And if Universal should ever decide it is time to release some of their more obscure B movies...well, I will be the first in line to buy their product!

DR NOEL,
Glad to see the link to your show. I had the impression from a previous post that you were unable to obtain funding. This is a different show?

It's the same show.  And the pursuit of funding is on-going and seemingly impossible.  In my heart of hearts, I truly believe that the day will come in which my producer and/or NYMF calls and tells me I don't have enough money raised for Such Good Friends to be in the Festival.

But, since that day hasn't come yet, we proceed, doing all the things we need to do to open on September 28 at the Julia Miles.

I've been having a series of long and intense meetings with the director, in which we go over every beat of the show, questioning how things strike the audience (Frank Loesser punched a leading lady once, so I worry about striking my audience.) and that leads to tons of rewriting.  Old (favorite) songs are thrown out; new songs are written, and I hope they're even better.

Also, the casting process has begun, using my dear wife Joy's firm, which has cast more NYMF shows than anybody, so they know what's what and who's who.

The producer and the director are busy finding the able people who'll do all the things we'll need done, like set designing, costumes, lights, tech direct, publicity, etc.

Fred, Such Good Friends is a completely original show, and has nothing to do with the novel about adultery by Lois Gould or the film Otto Preminger made of it.  I wrote book, music and lyrics completely from scratch.

It's about three funny pals who are putting on a Berle- or Caesar-like variety show in the early days of live TV.  They know each other so well, they're able to avoid all sorts of only-because-it's-live calamities.  You could say it's the same milieu as Laughter on the 23rd Floor and My Favorite Year, but far more serious and emotional.  If you know the musicals that most people don't, I drew a lot of inspiration from Top Banana and Two on the Aisle.

The Such Good Friends URL,

http://www.nymf.org/Show-74.html (http://www.nymf.org/Show-74.html)

is remarkably similar to the one for BK's show,

http://www.nymf.org/Show-704.html (http://www.nymf.org/Show-704.html)

Could it be NYMF knows we're Such Good Friends?

Two films are opening today at The Quad Cinema (where SACCO AND VANZETTI played) that sound very interesting. If any DR's see them, I would be interested in hearing what you thought. They both received rave reviews in the NYT, so yay for the QUAD!

The first is COLMA:THE MUSICAL, about "three young people on the brink of that terrifying adventure called life, but it's also about how we learn to give voice---joyfully, honestly, loudly---to the truest parts of ourselves, parts not everyone else hears."

"The idea of youth as a cause for self-discovery works well
with the movie's belief in music as an intimate means of self-expression. H.P. Mendoza's hooky-songs, both the short and semisweet and the epically narrative, look as much outward as they do inward. Yet even when the songs convey a sense of
the larger world, they remain as personal as a confession."

The other film, which made me think of DR's Elmore and Tomovoz, got a fantastic front page review: MACBETH.

From critic Matt Zoller Seitz's review: "For four centuries William Shakespeare's plays have been reinvented to fit contemporary sensibilities. But few recent efforts can match the Australian
writer and director Geoffrey Wright's brutal and thrilling new version, which envisions the thane of Cawder as a longhaired,  drug-addled gangster and his poisoned realm as a decadent MTV dreamscape of nymphet witches, smoky nightclubs and point-blank, slow-motion gun battles"

"Wright's movie goes to great, often inventive lengths to tell the tale visually, it dutifully preserves great swaths of the playwright's verse and often ramps down its machine-gun style editing and jittery handheld camera work to allow sensuous language. This results in the cast's consistently imaginative, lively performances to take center stage."

I guess you'd need "machine-gun style editing" for those gun battles, eh?

Thanks for the info, Noel.

The Otto Preminger movie of Such Good Friends was the first time I'd ever witnessed a scene from a movie being shot; otherwise that movie would probably have been forgotten by me.  But the title holds a special memory for me, so I hope that yields good karma for you.  Does that make any sense at all?  I hope so.

As to DR ELMORE's post yesterday....

I think YOUTUBE though it certainly should be held accountable for Copyright violations....it's like a preview channel.  Of course putting DR EDISAURUS' movie up in its entirety was a definite violation.  I am not sure how easy it is to download and burn from YOUTUBE, never tried.

DR ELMORE was talking about Rapidshare - which a file sharing service - you can get COPYRIGHTED movies and music to download and burn - quite a different service than YOU TUBE.

Thank you, DR NOEL, for the explanation. Out of curiosity, who or what (organizations) usually funds such things?

Just found out that what I thought was a mistake in the NYMF contract regarding the "participation fee" (we thought it was $500, while the contract says $5,000), is not, in fact, a mistake.  I cannot believe it, actually.  The New Link shows pay $500 and the Invited shows pay $5K (none of this is clear at all on their site, and the exec director basically admitted that).  The difference is that New Link shows split box-office from dollar one with NYMF, whereas Invited shows make back the 5K, and THEN split 50-50 with NYMF.

What is unclear is whether the acceptance fee comes out of the 15K we're allowed to spend on the production (cannot spend one penny more - the actors are on top of the 15K).  I can't believe it would be, but then if it's not, that means we have to raise yet more dough - and that's going to be a big problem, as five thousand bucks is not an insignificant amount.  I'll await more explanation from them and the figure out how to proceed.

I feel the same way. I would never make an illegal copy of something that's available for purchase that would rob rights holders of their rightful money.

However, when things go out of print or aren't offered at all, and I have a chance to get a copy of it by whatever means, I will take it.

I began my afternoon entertainment with a MURDER SHE WROTE episode, one of my favorites from Season 6. In this one, the story begins with Jessica pointing the accusing finger at the killer (a woman who she says has murdered her husband). As the episode develops, it looks as if Jessica has made a mistake an accused the wrong person whereby she is threatened by a lawsuit. It's an intricate puzzle and one I didn't guess correctly the first time the episode aired.

Guest stars included Elliott Gould, Susan Blakeley, Barbara Parkins, and Paul Gleason.
Title: Re:THE TITULAR ME
Post by: Matt H. on July 06, 2007, 01:31:16 PM
I watched one more MURDER SHE WROTE episode, another of those Jessica-less stories that featured Ken Howard as a former pro football player who's become a private eye. He inherits a very smart, trained poodle from a friend who dies, and the two of them are off to solve the mystery. Not bad by any means, but these stories are never as good as the actual mysteries with Jessica. I'll bet the MURDER SHE WROTE writing staff felt these crime dramas were like a busman's holiday compared to the mystery plots they had to dream up for the regular show.

Gues stars in addition to Ken Howard were Max Baer, Tim Reid, and Susan Anton.

Then I spent a marvelous 111 minutes with Billy Wilder's bile-on-top-of-acid drama ACE IN THE HOLE. I can see why folks wouldn't have gone to this back in the early 1950s. Everyone's a louse, it paints a negative picture of almost every institution it can, and the main character's end is so prolonged and ugly that it seems endless arriving.

With all our knowledge today of how crooked so many institutions actually are, the story seems astoundingly prescient. Paramount could give this thing away in 1951, not even with a title change to THE BIG CARNIVAL, and it's funny that rather than release this themselves they've given Criterion the rights to the DVD release.

And the transfer is just breathtaking, among the best black and white flat transfers I've ever seen.

The good news is that I made a deal with the general manager/line producer that I really wanted.  We both compromised, and I think having a real pro like him is going to make this journey so much less stressful, as he deals with everything - theater, sound, lighting, NYMF, unions, contracts, and all that stuff.

The bad or at least difficult news is that we have to raise 5K more - it thankfull doesn't come out of the production budget, but it's got to come from somewhere.  Yes, we get it back from box-office receipts before we have to start the split, so I know we'll at least get the money back, but it's just so hard, especially when a) you're not expecting it, and b) it comes at you so damn quickly.

Hey everyone.  It's been awhile yet again, and I'm so sorry for being e&t.  Nice to see a few old DR's back in the fold and sorry to hear about local boy Pulliam becoming a lurker, I hope that doesn't last long.

Been doing the vocal end of a theatre camp here in the bay area and having quite a jolly time.  It's  long days though, with camp (7 hours) and then rehearsal (for Beauty and the Beast) in the evening.  Beauty opens next Friday.

The DP is back in Pennsylvania as we speak visiting family and looking for locations for our bakery.  Unfortunately, he's been plagued with a stomach "thing" and hasn't had a lot of energy to get out there and look around.  He's done a little though, and there are some prospects, but we'll have to say.  D-day is Ocotber 10, so hopefully there be some good news by then.

Other than that, it's nice to be here again.

Good Evening!

Don't see the new movie, "1408".  Don't see it.  I mean it.  Bad, bad, bad, bad.  Boring, boring, boring, boring.  Whoever thought John Cusack could carry this sort of movie?  And I'm betting that the Stephen King short story on which this movie was based is shorter than the screenplay for the this movie.

Before the movie, DR Jason and I did make a stop at Garrett Popcorn for some popcorn.  He got a bag of "The Mix" (half Caramel Crisp, half cheese), and I got a small bag of the Caramel Crisp with nuts (almonds, pecans, and macadamias).

And then we headed to the movies...

Then it was off to our respective theatres.  I decided to do a quick run through of the Key 2 book again since I won't have that much time tomorrow to review it before the show since I'll be playing rehearsal before the matinee.  I went over my three "little heart attacks", and I feel much better about them now than I did earlier in the week.

And then on the way out of the theatre, I ran into a dear old friend from DC.  He was my Baker in Into the Woods at Signature (the first time they did it), and we always just seem to run into each other every now and then.  Alas, I believe the last time we ran into each other was about three years ago.  He's currently in The Lion King here in NYC, but he'll be heading back to the tour in the fall.  In the meantime, we'll hopefully be able to sit down for a bit and get caught up.  :)

Don't see "1408".

I won't rent it, and I will tell Keith not to.  It doesn't mean he will listen to me, or watch it when it comes on TV.

The made for TV movies from his books (not that I read them to compare) were pretty bad.  I have only seen a few of his films, MISERY, THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, & STAND BY ME were excellent.

Well, this is a little troubling. I was walking over to the church to feed the fish in the fountain, and I heard the burglar alarm ringing. I am still waiting for the security company to call me about it.

I turned the alarm off, called my DH to come help me investigate, discovered the problem, reset the alarm. No call from the security company.

Next, I started going through the extras on the ACE IN THE HOLE set. There's a running commentary that's a scene-by-scene analysis, my least favorite kind of commentary. Kind of dry, but occasionally the speaker would give some interesting background information on a actor or a comparison to some other work of Wilder's.

There's an almost 1 hour interview conducted by a French film critic (speaking English as does Wilder) that touches on some of his films but definitely not all. I was surprised that KISS ME STUPID was singled out for discussion. Also FEDORA and his Sherlock Holmes film were mentioned.

Hmm... Did they like it?  Or did they "like" it?  I guess there are a few good things about it - and I truly do mean a few(!) - but it just didn't hold our interest.  Nor anyone else's in the theatre.  Of course, there were hardly any other people in the theatre, so...  Maybe you need to see it in a packed house.  And after a couple of cocktails.

There was a 14 minute interview with Kirk Douglas that was excerpted so that only the parts dealing with ACE IN THE HOLE or Billy WIlder specifically was present.

One thing I didn't know: Wilder originally offered Kirk Douglas the leading part in STALAG 17. He didn't do it because he didn't like the play version, and he kicks himself now for not understanding that Wilder would have made something much better on film than the stage version. Always find it fascinating who got offered roles in films that ended up being done by others.

I still have a couple of special features to deal with: an audio interview with one of the co-writers of ACE IN THE HOLE, and a Spike Lee afterword on the film. Not sure why they chose him to offer an appreciation for the movie, but I'll be interested to watch it and hopefully find out.

Don't see "1408".  ;)

Well... I just checked out the reviews over at The New York Times, as well as RottenTomatoes.com... Very interesting.  The Times sort of liked it, however, the review was very short(!), and was doled out to one of their third-string reviewers.  -There's nothing wrong with third-string reviewers, but with the Times, sometimes that's all the "advice" you need.  However, even some of the good reviews say it's a bit too long - which it is.  And, yes, the first part of the movie is pretty good - heck, even Len Cariou is in it! ;), but still...  DR Jason and I could not believe we had just spent $11.00 and almost two hours of our day watching something so lackluster.  We even laughed about it.  A lot.  ;)

What Jose said.

After the Edison, I went to my theatre and counted out my booth from last night's show. It turned out I had the best night I've had in MONTHS last night. Very exciting stuff. Sadly, tonight was not quite so successful...just regular, even though we were sold out again.

I ran into a friend tonight who hadn't seen me since January (B.W.W. - Before Weight Watchers), and she kinda freaked out. I don't know how much of it was just for show, but she was amazed by my "transformation." That was a nice ego boost. :-)

And I caught a couple of people checking out my calves today as we were walking to the restaurant. That helped, too. :-) Or perhaps they were blinded by the white...

And don't see "1408."

Good question.

I believe they offer them:

-A refund, or...
-Seating in a different part of theatre - probably the box seats that get sold normally (since they're such bad seats view-wise), plus a partial refund, or...
-Tickets for another performance.

So, what happens when they sell a seat twice?

It rarely happens, but they generally have house seats or reserved seats for emergencies. If they are truly sold out, then the house manager has to speak with both sets of ticketholders and work out some kind of compromise, which usually means someone gets better seats at a later performance or a refund, which they try to avoid like the plague.

I'm hoping we're sold pretty well this weekend...I'm only about $3,000 shy of making commission this week. I'd love to make a good $1,500 more than that... :)

OMGUG (Omigod, You Guys in LEGALLY BLONDE lingo)...the London production of THE DROWSY CHAPERONE has just announced their closing date. Wow! That didn't last long... How sad!

Someone should've told them to avoid "1408."

I am now dressed in one of my kurtas and quite comfy...watching my first Bollywood movie of the weekend MEMDIDI (1961) which is a very cute comedy starring character actress Lalita Pawar along with David, Jayant, and Tanuja.

Looking at the front cover of the DVD, however, one would think it was a very dramatic melodrama  ???  Well, maybe the comedy turns sad later on.

DR MBarnum: Methinks that a kurta would be perfect yoga attire.

How is Alejandro, anyway...? ;)

Well... I'm actually already sleepy, so...

Tomorrow will be an interesting day:  I'm playing ACL rehearsal from 1:00pm-1:30pm.  And then I head a few blocks west on 45th Street for the matinee at 2:00.

Yes, I'm being called for a half hour of rehearsal.  However, since they require a two-hour minimum call... :)  -I even asked to play at least the full two hours since I'm being paid for the time, but since the other schedules/pianists had already been coordinated... :)

And then I think there's a birthday party I'm supposed to go to.  However, even though I know who's having the birthday, I have no idea where it's being held.  Hmmm...  We shall see.

Q. If you were commissioned to design a fashion line for a major retailer, which retailer would it be?

A. Oh, J.C. Pennoir! I’ve always worn a J.C. Pennoir gown.

I have my camera with me, so I'll ask if someone(s) can take some pictures.  I don't know if I can get pictures of all four of my costumes, but we'll see. :)

You have more costumes than lines!

His TV series "The Golden Years" got off to a fine start, but the newtwork cancelled it after only six episodes >:(

Sell shares in the production here!  Everyone who contributes gets their money back and a name in the program...

"Mrs. Cathcart: 50 per cent, Mrs. Wentwort: 50 per cent, Mrs. Resnick: 100 per cent".

I got a call from security from my old job telling me the alarm went off....I ignored it. I don't have a key anymore

Last time they called me it was the other lawyer in the office who was locked in by the secretary who forgot to see if he was there before setting the alarm. My guess is it was something like that again. Or the cleaning people.  Actually it was a message on my machine, apparently I'm not off the call chain yet.

If I may answer for BK, $50 or $100, depending on how many people contribute.

Although I'm sure any amount would be welcome.

I called the security company, and they had no record of being notified that our alarm was activated today. Strange.

It might be on our end. We need to check the wiring.

It sure worked fine last week when the alarm went off fifteen minutes before curtain (boy, I wish they had double-sold those seats!) and I had to get it settled before the show began.

Seeing that Otto and I are spending the weekend at my Grandmother's place, where my mom lives also and where my studio is with all my CD's, scores, etc, I thought it would be nice to spend some time in the studio after rehearsal uploading CD's and maybe posting a few on eBay.  While I was doing that, I thought I'd watch the "Mame" DVD or the "You Light Up My Life" DVD, but I am SO enjoying the quiet.  It's pleasent and peaceful.  I was going to also get some practice in with the prolouge for Beauty and the Beast , but I'm enjoying the quiet.  Man, it's quiet!
