I'm playing one of the CDs I got - remember when I spoke so highly of a singer named Trijntje Oosterhouse and her CD of Bacharach songs? I found another CD by her, this one called Strange Fruit, a live album (that sounds like a studio album - that's how well it's recorded), with full symphony orchestra. She's just amazing, and the orchestrations and arrangements are really interesting and lush. The album is a blending of songs made famous by Billie Holiday and song written by Gershwin.

Margaret Cho is funny. She is touring with Cyndi Lauper and is here in LA so she performed at this comedy improve club. They probably begged her to come.
Although I laughed quite a lot, I felt that much of her material was very much the same material everyone uses. Making fun of the republicans, conservatives, the press, race, and sex. I can certainly say that I am curious how her audience responds in other states.

Well, we've gotten our first blurb for the new book, by our very own Pogue, who has blurbed me before, which always makes me happy. Here it is:
"In MURDER AT HOLLYWOOD HIGH: AN ADRIANA HOFSTETTER MYSTERY, Bruce Kimmel offers a protagonist as enjoyable as his inimitable Benjamin Kritzer. As he did in the Kritzer trilogy, Kimmel celebrates and commiserates with awkward adolescence...an out-of-water odd duck marching to the off-beat of her own quirky drummer. And that drummer is playing lots of rim-shots, because in this tale of Ms. Hofstetter, teenage misfit and amateur sleuth, the Kimmel wit and wry observation spill across every page like circus clowns spilling out of one of those tiny cars. I'd have read this book twice as fast if I hadn't been constantly interrupted by my own laughter."

Yesterday, we had two performances...on a Sunday! Anyway, the matinee went fairly well even though the audience only numbered about 19 or so. The evening performance had about 25 or so (including my parents, my sister, her boyfriend and my visiting aunt from California) and they were the best audience of the run! It was a great show to end the weekend on. My aunt really liked it and my dad said that it was "interesting" (but he did like it). My sister's favorite version was when they did it on an episode of "Moonlighting" with Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis. Okay. ;)

I don't know if I have a favorite FS film. I never warmed up to him as an actor. He was a wonderful presence on film was basically nonplussed from the films I saw him in,
However I do have a what were thinkking of when the cast him to sing Old Man River in the finale of Till The Clouds Roll By.
As for my favorite song:
I really a big fan of his band singer days (Harry James & Tommy Dorsey) and up to the sixties. After that when his voice "matured" and he became more of a stylist than a singer. It is hard to choose just one song.

Good Morning folks.
It's hot in New York but it's July so I can't be suprised.
I listened to Showtime on Saturday evening and recorded it. I'm glad I did because my review of 110 in the Shade was aired. The only problem is I can't tell all my e-mail folks about it because they haven't put the show up on Listen Again. They have put up the show from June 23rd, though and that's the one where Amy has her letter read by Beverley. I dropped a note to the producer and I hope that later in the week (like later today maybe) the show from July 7 will be up to hear.
The bowl is washed and I have much work to do at the office. I'm glad to be here in an air-conditioned room. I'm not one to complain about the coolness. I wouldn't be able to work if there was no AC in the office.
Part of my reaction to FS is based on his hateful and mean-spirited persona as he got older so I'm not as much of a fan as I used to be. I prefer early and middle Frank for vocals. The Nelson Riddle stuff is classic and full of favorites. I loathe his recording of New York, New York. It's everything that's wrong with late Frank. It's an arrogant, selfish and, IMHO, badly sung performance by an artists who, at this stage in his career, doesn't seem to give a rat's patootie about anything but getting paid for singing (badly) a song. OK, rant over.
Gotta go!

I think I saw Brain's auditions listed as July 17. I don't see Such Good Friends' auditions listed anywhere, and this makes me nervous.
The massive revisions continue apace. And, it seems, I need to take a moment to say goodbye to a few songs:
"A Song That Shows Range" was the funniest song in the show, but it was always kind of shoe-horned in there. Can't give the leading lady three big solos in a row. And the song is a lie. She's good reason to lie, but one can't be certain the audience will understand it's a lie. R.I.P.
"My Dad" was the catchiest song in the show, and, rare for me, related to a childhood experience of mine. It was a duet for two twelve-year-old boys, but, it seems, the story is better served without two boys, so they and their duet are gone.
"A Cat May Look at a King" was the shortest song in the show. And yet, not worth the time it took to sing it.
"Magic Time" was the prettiest song in the show. Twinkly, like Twilight Time, with Ellington-esque jazz harmonies and a very specific lyric about the love of performing. Show, don't tell. It and its reprise, vamoose.
"The Day That You Return" was the period (WW2) love song the audience might have remembered fondly. If they'd heard it. I was going to have a newsreel announcer speak over it. He's still in; the song ain't.
"Grown-Ups," the most moving song in the show, I rewrote about five times. Never got it right. A father singing to his son seemed a potent idea, but it makes the son static, and plot changes have removed the reason for singing it in the first place. A swing and a miss.
The "My Dad" reprise, sung by the heel, is going to be replaced with a title song reprise, sung by the hero.
"A Lovely Day for a Stroll" may be re-tooled into a male duet. It involved a wronged man, his family, and the community at large. We no longer have his family, and the cast size is too small to present that community. I always worried that going from a Cmaj7 to an F7 didn't sound 1950s enough. Have to pull the plug on this one.
"Jolly Little Song" was the tune no one could get out of their head. But they wanted to. Boy, did they want to.
"Things That Danny Did" was a legitimate comedy song coming in the midst of a tragic situation. Writing this, last fall, was like making that last reach that leads you to the top of the mountain. Helped me finish the draft that so many people have flipped over. I'll miss it.
And, finally, the "Finale" was always too explicit and didactic. I obviously stole the final image from Camelot, but without those boys, I'll have to come up with something different.
Goodbye, good songs. At moments like these, it's helpful to remember that Jones & Schmidt wrote over 100 songs for 110 in the Shade. And they're good: We know this because BK recorded a lot of them for the Lost In Boston series.

My favorite SInatra on film is his MGM period because he was actually acting someone who wasn't remotely like himself: shy with women, etc.
So, ON THE TOWN and TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME are favorites. I love his vocal for "Time After Time," one of my all-time favorite songs from IT HAPPENED IN BROOKLYN.
As for the later Sinatra, I do enjoy him in SOME CAME RUNNING, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, and THE DETECTIVE.
I loathe him in CAN-CAN, totally miscast and playing it as a hipster in that period of time, ugh! Louis Jourdan should have played Sinatra's part. And I'm delighted he walked off of CAROUSEL. I much prefer Gordon MacRae.

Well tonight is an Act One run thru....so I think I will review my lines...such as they are.
Die again, Mortimer!
Of course I never did.
-
Ben, have Ant drop our casting director a line - it's Michael Cassara (don't know his e-mail addy offhand, but he's got a website with contact info, so google him). Tell him that I told you to e-mail and that I'd like to see him at our regular (not EPA) audition.
Bruce, thanks for the information about auditions. I have given it to Anthony.

Welcome seventeen GUESTS. Shares available.

DR FJL - There is a nice article about Rick Foucheux in today's Washington Post.

I've already been through a flurry of e-mails. One was very sweet, from a university in England who really want to do The Brain this December. I told them the rights aren't really available yet, but that I'd think about it anyway.
Tell them they can have the rights for $5,000.... :)
How does that work, anyway? Why aren't the rights available from day one?

Just found out that Hollywood Blvd. is closed all day and night to midnight. Why? The Harry Potter premiere. This closing off the boulevard has been happening more and more and is completely out of control now - the poor people who actually live in Hollywood are out of luck trying to go anywhere or get home without having to do major traffic ballet.
-
Will Grant design some cool BRAIN at NYMF T-shirts for purchase there? That would be a fun item! Will you sell soundtracks at the show?

DR JRand - Nice Barn! :)
The Melodie Barn!! :D

Don't know about t-shirts, or what the concession story it, but I'd certainly not be thrilled if we couldn't sell CDs there.

BK: I hope you don't mind, but I followed your advice for Ben and Ant and emailed Michael this afternoon with my headshot and resume.
DRs Jose, VixMom and FJL: See you at John's at 5:15!

Hello, Quick! :D
-
Jason - good. Right thing to do.
-
...and a pox on the inconsiderate roommates of DRs Jason and Jose!
-
A pox on the pox of my inconsiderate roommates. I told them I needed to be repaid for the utilities BY FRIDAY. I still haven't received payment from either of them.
And now Itty Bitty is sitting in the living room enjoying some retarded hip-hop movie and laughing so loudly that I can hear him from the other side of the apartment with my door shut. I hate him. At least he's not practicing his "vocal exercises," which sound more like Native American tribal screams than they do arpeggios...
-
I spoke too soon...he's started his recital, which includes such "hits" as the theme from "The Greatest American Hero," "Out There," Boq's solo section from the witch hunting scene in Wicked and much, much more...
I don't know who his voice teachers - yes, plural - are, but they are laughing all the way to the bank.
-
I never tire of the darling cat photos. Edi, kitty #4 is beautiful.
DRLaura, do you trap, spay/neuter & release the feral cats?
-
Charles Pogue I think you outdid yourself on the blurb for the new book. (I would put a happy face here, but just for you will pass on it-gosh that was difficult not to do).

From 3D
S'far as I'm concerned, eat anything you want, just in appropriate portions. (And smaller portions if you're trying to lose weight.) And never, ever eat after 7 pm at night, or at least 3 hours before you go to bed, whichever comes first.
Rules I try to live by, that and burning off as many calories as possible. I didn't get a walk today, this is happening way too often these days. :'(
3D-Do you work with people at a gym, their homes, etc? Do you also address the issues of why they eat too much?

NOTES FROM HELL DOWNUNDER (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,288621,00.html)
Catholic School in Australia Agrees to Let Boy Named Hell EnrollMonday , July 09, 2007
MELBOURNE, Australia —
The Hell family says it may tell a Catholic school in Australia where to go after it objected to enrolling their son because of his name.
Officials said the boy had been offered a place at the St. Peter the Apostle school in the southern city of Melbourne after discussions between the principal, the parish priest and the family over his name.
But Alex Hell said he would rather send 5-year-old Max elsewhere because the school balked at taking the boy over his family name.
"We are the victims of our name," Hell said Monday.

A quote yesterday from DR Jason.....
I dunno, DR MusicGuy...I seem to recall Indianapolis being incredibly exciting, as I was there following up on some "Hopeful Heart" business...a little business named Trevor. Ring a bell? How is he? His Friendster profile claims he's now married. Color me confused!
Oh fear not.... I remember your adventure very well indeed . I seem to remember that you were lured out into the wilds and were reading Balzac and eating sandwiches !! :o
And as for the Friendster thing... well, lots of definitions, and the accuracy of the profile can change from day to day. ;)

I'm trying to figure out what to wear this afternoon. Yes, light and gauzy would be ideal, but since we'll be dining on pizza, I also need something that's not so "stain evident". Or something like that.

Yes. We did that years ago as a service to the community. These fellas I've posted the last few days are fellas that have been hanging around my house for years.

Day One of Vacation Bible School seems to have been a success.

Wow! If you're throwing out this many songs...how many are you keeping??
-
Day One of Vacation Bible School seems to have been a success.
No doubt due in large part to your unflagging efforts.

I saw Such Good Friends' EPA listing.

I began my afternoon by finishing WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION which I had watched about 2/3 of last night. Always fun to see Marlene's climactic turns, and Laughton and Lanchester are a delight together. I looked it up and Lanchester actually won the Golden Globe that year for the film (Laughton was nominated). Of course, both were up for Oscars, too, but both lost: he to Alec Guiness for KWAI and she to Mioshi Umeki for SAYONARA.
-
Back from visiting 3 elders at 2 retirement communities and delivering their NYC surprises from M&M's World. I took my mother out to do some errands and she took me to the new Frisch's for lunch.
It's very hot and humid in SW Ohio, too.
-
Next, I watched the next episode of MURDER SHE WROTE in the DVD, alas, another Jessica-less episode, and a very weak one at that. A young private eye and his wife try to gain an inheritance by claiming that an unclaimed dead body is the body of their rich dead relative. Among the guest stars were Michael Callan, Faith Ford, and Bill Maher.

Next, I did get LES ENFANTS TERRIBLES in the mail today, so I watched it. It was the first viewing for me. It's a strange film but an interesting one with this love/hate brother/sister dynamic present. Though Jean Cocteau wrote the original novel and the screenplay, he chose not to direct this and sold the rights to Jean-Pierre Melville. However, you'd swear Cocteau was calling ALL the shots because the look and style are very, very much like Cocteau's ORPHEE.
-
After I finished the movie, I began it again to listen to the running commentary by Gilbert Adair which is quite illuminating even though there are some long gaps between comments.
-
Just a heads-up...I've been running late, well...lately. So I'll be there as soon as I can be.

I just read the VARIETY review of HAIRSPRAY. Overall, it's a very positive review, but the writer felt the adult casting and execution was weaker than the casting of the kids.

Kitten finds mother in 3-year-old dachshund
July 08, 2007 - Posted at 12:00 a.m.
BY GABE SEMENZA - VICTORIA ADVOCATE
Tahoe looks like a normal kitten. He's cute, clumsy and interested in everything.
He awoke Thursday afternoon from a nap, yawned, put both tiny paws over his eyes and stretched. And like any other kitten, Tahoe awoke hungry.
But instead of eating from a dish, or searching for his biological mother, Tahoe rolled over - already cuddled against Lillie, a 3-year-old longhaired dachshund - and began to feed from her.
There is a cute video embedded in the above linked story.

I saw the original play translated as INDISCRETIONS on Broadway with Kathleen Turner, Eileen Atkins, Jude Law, Roger Rees, and Cynthia Nixon. The production was great, but I prefer Cocteau's play THE INFERNAL MACHINE.

3D-Do you work with people at a gym, their homes, etc? Do you also address the issues of why they eat too much?
Hi, Jane
I do either home or gym, depending on the client.
Yes, I always tell my clients they have to "know themselves." For the first two weeks we work together, I make 'em keep track of every minute of their lives, writing down what they eat, when they eat it, and why. (If they snack is it because they're hungry, bored, sitting at the computer and it's a habit, etc.) When their energy is high, when low, etc.
Once we've got information to work with we work on breaking bad habits and replacing them with healthy ones. I encourage them to continue with their journals so they can track their progress.

-
Wow! If you're throwing out this many songs...how many are you keeping??
They're a little hard to count: between 25 and 30.
Yes, that EPA has now been posted, including four characters that have been cut in the week since the break-down was written. I feel bad about all the 30-something ladies I had in mind for the wives.
Why, you wonder, are they hard to count?
In Act Two, Scene Five, Gabe sings a short (32-bar) song that comes to a cadence. Then there's ten quick lines of dialogue; then Gabe sings another short song (47 seconds) and cuts himself off. Do I count that as two or one?
In the previous scene, Act Two, Scene Four, Dottie sings a song that gets cut off and one page later Vivian is singing a song and the next thing you know they're singing their different songs simultaneously in counterpoint. Do I count that as two or one?
And that's not counting any of the jingles. Often, there's dialogue that takes place in a big TV studio. In the background, a live commercial is being broadcast. So, that's sung music underscoring a book scene. Do I count each of these as one or none?
You can see why that's not an easy question to answer!
Speaking of counting things, I just got off the phone with an old friend who said she'd be happy to contribute to Such Good Friends! :D My day is officially made. ;D
-

Ditto -- I know, Mz Karen is most unoriginal/being a copy-cat this morning. I'm not a big fan of FS as an actor, but if forced to choose, my B/W picks would pretty much follow DR ELmo's ... As for myself, there are a couple of things I need to take care of here at the apartment. And then I just need to plan out my out-of-the-apartment errands for this afternoon so that I get them all done in transit and in time to meet up at John's Pizza.
Alas, with the heat today, I don't think a job or jog around the Reservoir would be advisable.
Well don't bring them back to the apartment!

And the word of the day is: DEMULCENT!

I never found Hollywood Blvd. a particularly efficient way of crossing town. It has always been too bogged down with tourists gawping. I remember getting off a bus once, to hoof it instead, and staying ahead of the bus until I reached my destination. Regular drivers in the area know that it's more efficient to drive east-west on a street a block or two north or south of the Boulevard.
The sidewalks are cleaner a couple of blocks away, too.

I'm catching up on this weekend's posts (because I had no time for myself at ALL this weekend ;)), and first let me say, Great pictures, MBarnum and TCB! I'm up to Page 7 on Saturday (Post #180 at 11:37:14 AM) so, if anyone has posted pictures after that, I haven't gotten to them yet. :)
Did you get to the post where I asked you to say hello to Scott Brown?
-
I shall shortly be on my way to our big meeting (with attendance predicted between 2 and 200 - hope it's closer to the latter, but, you know, this is LA).
Then I shall sup with Cason and Heather.
-
Did you get to the post where I asked you to say hello to Scott Brown?
Yes, I did! I told him yesterday afternoon and he said "Hi" back to you!
-
George, I loved your pictures, too!
-
And, DR George, thanks to you for sharing your photos and news about The Taming of the Shrew. Sounds like you're having a lot of fun!
-
I had an extremely stressful situation this afternoon--as some of you know, they are developing the .9 acre lot next to us and are putting in two new houses--very slowly. They've been at it for over a year and are still not very far. I worked at church all morning and came home and let the dogs out, who began barking. The next thing I heard was a loud, extremely irate voice shouting, "Shut up, you f***ing dogs." I came right out to see one of the construction workers throwing rocks or dirt clods (not sure which) through our fence at the dogs. I yelled over to him to stop at which point he went *really* ballistic, threatening me and the dogs. I went inside and immediately called the police and the property owner. The police came over and took statements. The guy was still literally frothing at the mouth, right in front of the police (called me an "ugly motherf-er" right in front of the officer), and yet they refused to arrest him. I'm really concerned that this nutcase is going to come back and do something to the dogs now.
-
The funny (?) thing is, if the guy had simply walked over and petted them through the fence, they would have been his best friends forever.
-
That is very scary, JMK. I hope everything is quiet from now on.
-
I'd keep the dogs inside for a while.
-
I'd keep the dogs inside for a while.
We always keep them in, which is why this is so scary. We only let them out to do their business, and then just for as long as it takes. As DR Jane will attest, BeeGee is not an outside dog. :)
-
Woo! THE CLOSER is intense tonight!
That is all.
-
Well, after making (good-natured) fun of Jason for saying that he might be late for the little dinner at John's Pizzeria, I ended up getting there late myself.
Moral: Never make fun of DR Jason. Or judge not lest ye be judged.
-
It gets more intense. Way intense.
-
JMK-What did the property owner have to say?
I agree you should be scared. For one I would talk to my vet about what to do if they are poisoned.
Was this in the back yard or front? Will it help to let them out in the opposite area for awhile?

TOTD:
I am quite obviously in a minority here, because I enjoy Frank's film work immensely.
He may be wrong for Nathan Detroit on stage, but, on film he takes GUYS AND DOLLS to another level, and his scenes with Brando and Blaine are comic treasures. "Adelaide" is a nice addition to the score and Frank's ensemble work with "The Oldest Established" and "Guys and Dolls" is quite good. (I still prefer Bobby Darin's rendition of the title song to all others, though).
I like the later Sinatra film performances:
THE FIRST DEADLY SIN
THE DETECTIVE
TONY ROME
WOMAN IN CEMENT
WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT
Mid-Sinatra (1950s +) which I like are:
MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE
SOME CAME RUNNING
NEVER SO FEW
A HOLE IN THE HEAD
THE JOKER IS WILD
SUDDENLY
THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM
HIGH SOCIETY
THE TENDER TRAP
FROM HERE TO ETERNITY
MEET DANNY WILSON
From the 40s, I am partial to his work with Gene Kelly:
ON THE TOWN
ANCHOR'S AWEIGH
I'd still like to see:
MEET DANNY WILSON
NOT AS A STRANGER
THE KISSING BANDIT

Over the years we have had a few unnerving experiences with workman.
There was the guy who turned out to be KKK. You can bet I never told him we were Jewish, and when Keith had to fire him in the middle of the job I said to pay him anyway.
Another time someone called to say they overheard a workman's plan to rob us, and described which items were to be stolen. Fortunately it wasn't true, or the call put a stop to it.

Forget about the property owner. Contact this guy's boss and tell him what happened and demand that he be put on a different job, because if anything happens to your dogs you'll sue, and you'll have a police report to back up your claim.
Alternatively, bake some brownies, take 'em over there, say, "Hey, sorry about the misunderstanding yesterday but please don't yell at my dogs." Do it in front of his fellow workers and maybe he'll get the message that he was a jerk. Bring a digital recorder, artfully concealed, so you can tape anything he says to you...

What a good episode for Corey Reynolds! The actor playing the suspect was also quite wonderful. Another bullseye!

It's really been a lot of fun! I'm sure that I'll get back into it (acting in community theater) more after the summer. :)

There was a "crazy" German shepherd, Heidi, that lived with its owner across the street from our other house. She would run over whenever we pulled into the driveway and bark at us and bare her teeth. I was afraid to get out of my car.
Eventually, we decided to talk to her owner but asked him to put her in the house. After we got to know him, he let her out. Since he was relaxed about us, so was she. After that, she would still show up in our driveway, but now it was because we would play fetch with her. She was so beautiful and graceful and fast.
The owner was playing with her in the back yard. She was fetching and tripped and fell, and broke her leg. She was never the same after that---it seemed to take some of the spirit out of her. But she was still always glad to see us.
She would still escape off her leash and frightened a worker at the office across the street. The worker called the pound. I raced over and told them that I would keep her in my house until her owner came home. I begged them, I cried. I did not want them to take her.
They put the noose around her neck and captured her. I pleaded with them...they were probably doing their job but I felt like they could have left her with me.
After that, I never saw her again. I talked to her owner and he said that he had found her another home out on a farm. But the way he said it had a tinge of sadness that made me feel uneasy, like he might have left her at the pound. Even now I can't bear to think about that, but I never would have been able to keep her either, since I'm downtown on a busy street corner.
My point is that I think 3D's solution is a good one. Kill him with kindness and get them aquainted. I still wouldn't trust the guy alone with a dog, but he might have been traumatized by a dog sometime in his life, you never know. It's worth trying to resolve it and then maybe the barking would stop and everyone would be happy.
-
Ooh-la-la-lee! I spy me a TCB!
If I had known you were hanging out here, I would have been here sooner!
-
If I had known you were hanging out here, I would have been here sooner!
Come sooner, come later; just as long as you get here. ;D
-
The thing is, the dogs were in their own yard. They were only barking.
-
I sauntered over to the church just now, as I frequently do when I am not the one who locks up, and found three doors unlocked or unlatched.
-
I vote for smothering with kindness, too.
It worked with my neighbor - who accused Dixie Bell and I of being peeping toms; coming to close to his yard so that we could peer into his door and windows to see what he was doing (!), all of that on Holy Thursday - on the day before Easter, he received a gorgeous, highly priced Easter Card (all religiouso - they are a Catholic family) expressing the joys of friendship. (Not that he's ever been my friend - it's just a good neighbor policy).
We won't even talk about the dog which he owned which was allowed to wander free on a daily basis, doing daily businesses wherever he damned well pleased. . . .
-

Saturday morning's manager at the restaurant, came in to find that the FRONT DOORS had been unlocked all night Friday!
I arrived this morning to find that the tables on the deck were still set up, and one of them still had food and drink sitting on it!

What? no more talk of Sinatra? ? ?
-
What? No page ten, yet?
-
I knew that a little push would get us to PAGE TEN!

-
My favorite thing about Frank Sinatra is that my DS discovered that he is the one who sings "Love and Marriage" on Married with Children. That led him to another kind of music besides the hard rock he had liked, for which I am very grateful.
-
MusicGuy, am I picking you up at 8 a.m. tomorrow?
-
Good evening all and sun-dried,
Good evening dear Esteemed, leaderly (?), busy, and buffed BK --
Hi dear Laura....... I got tomorrow morning covered, so I wanted to let you know.
-
I appreciated the offer very much, but the 8:00 time slot just wouldn't work very well for me this time.
But you are no less of a dear!! And I hope the little tiny church-mice all behave for you!
-
I have to go ahead and pack a small bag to carry on the plane with me, and I'm also taking my laptop. My hotel says that it has free wi-fi throughout the entire hotel. It is a relatively new property, so I hope it works fairly dependably.
I'll try to check in here a little during the trip. I just know that it is REALLY hot here in Phoenix; and I'm afraid it may be very hot AND very sticky in Indy. So........ to quote dear Jose.......
"WHEWWWWW......" :o
-
I have trouble discussing Frank Sinatra when we refer to him as FS. Where I work, FS means Food Stamps, even though they haven't actually gotten STAMPS in Washington for years.
However, I have always been a fan of Sinatra the singer, and sometimes Sinatra the actor. I have never been a fan os Sinatra the person, but then I never met him either.
Favorite films:
THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE
VON RYAN'S EXPRESS
THE DETECTIVE
A HOLE IN THE HEAD
ON THE TOWN
FROM HERE TO ETERNITY
-
Will we never get to page nine?
Naturally.
-
It's hot. My living room thermostat reads 88 degrees. And it's after 11pm. That ain't right.
-
DR td, THE KISSING BANDIT is really terrible. But I don't blame you for wanting to see it. I waited for years until I finally caught a showing on TCM. Glad I've seen it, but it was truly a lemon.
-
I am afraid that DR MusicGuy is mistaken. It was much cooler today, and, indeed, very pleasant for an evening walk. It is only 100F at 8:15 p.m.
-
I watched some interesting things on TV tonight.
I began with another MURDER SHE WROTE episode, this one dealing with the death of a man who was giving many Cabot Cove residents a hard time. Lorna Luft was a guest star.
-
Next I watched some of the special features on the LES ENFANTS TERRIBLES DVD. There were three interview featurettes with people either associated with the film, or in the case of one feature, two critics defending it as a Cocteau work as opposed to a Melville film. I have to agree. I haven't seen a huge number of Melville films, but none of them looked like this, had this kind of feel or mood.
-
TD, you mentioned the film Bunty Aur Babli the other day and I kept meaning to ask if you liked it or not? I also keep forgetting that you like Bollywood films, too. Sometimes I feel so all alone here. :D
And I am always up for recommendations!
-
Tonight on TCM was a new RIchard Schickel documentary called SPIELBERG ON SPIELBERG. Since Spielberg doesn't do commentaries on his film DVDs, it was nice to get some comments on his career going all the way back to the Joan Crawford episode on NIGHT GALLERY and carrying him up through MUNICH. (The only feature films that got NO mention at all were the two Indiana Jones sequels, THE LOST WORLD, ALWAYS, and CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, at least as well as I could remember without a filmography in front of me.)
Worth watching once if you're interested in his films at all.
-
Next came THE CLOSER, and it was indeed intense and beautifully acted. I'll enjoy watching this again in a few days.
-
I finished the evening going back to LES ENFANTS TERRIBLES and listening to more of the commentary and also looking at the trailer (which showed the ending!) and the stills gallery, many of the behind-the-scenes stills showing Cocteau on the set during shooting or during set-ups.
-
It's hot. My living room thermostat reads 88 degrees. And it's after 11pm. That ain't right.
One night last week, my bedroom (which is at the top of a three-story townhouse) was 89.2 degrees! Fortunately, the temperature has gone down since then, but that one evening was the hottest...and not in the good way. ;)
-
I'm going to do a little writing before heading down for bed.
Good night!

~~~Cool Vibes for DR Jason and DearReaderLaura and anyone else who needs them!!~~~
I realize that baseball is not a high priority here at HHW, but is anyone else watching the new mini-series THE BRONX IS BURNING? It is an interesting mix of NY Yankee history mixed with the Son of Sam killings and some politics and humor thrown in for good measure.
Very entertaining so far.
-
No, I've not been watching a television program about baseball, but I do know that the baseball teams are doing the All-Star thing now and that my home team is doing well this year.
I read about that this morning but forgot about it tonight. It has our Vanzetti in it---John Turturro.
I don't know about any Indiana connections, but I could ask. But then, maybe you're thinking of the ice skater with the same name:
Good Evening!
Well, it was great seeing DR vixmom and the ever-energetic vixter again earlier tonight at dinner and dessert. We had pizza at John's Pizza, and then we, minus DR Jason, headed over to Junior's for dessert.
Then after dessert, I attempted to get a ticket for tonight's performance of Les Miserables, but...
Do you have a single ticket for tonight?
Yes, we do. $61.25. (I had a discount voucher with me.)
Where is the seat?
$61.25.
What's the seat location?
It's in the Mezzanine, Center, six rows back. $61.25
-That's when I realized that she had been motioning the whole time to the slot in the window where I should have placed my credit card.
Do you have anything left in the Orchestra?
No, just the Mezzanine.
Oh, OK. I think I will pass tonight, Thank You.
A look of disgust as she passes my discount voucher back to me.
So, I did not go to see Les Miserables tonight, and, sadly, I probably would have had I not had such a rude experience with the woman at the box office. Ah, well.
*I just heard from the vixter, and I believe they had a wonderful time at the show. :)
So, instead of seeing Les Miserables, I headed up to the 79th Street Boat Basin for a friend's 40th Birthday Party. I'm actually glad I went. I was able to touch base with Bess, the Birthday Girl - she was my stage manager for All About Us, and a couple other All About Us-ers were there too. As was one of the keyboard players from A Chorus Line, a couple of actors and actresses, some conductors and pianists, etc., etc., etc. -She was one of the original stage managers for Wicked, as well as Martin Short's Fame Becomes Me, so there were lots of "biz" people there. It was a nice party right under the "bridge" there by the water. It was hot, but it wasn't too bad, and they had a separate bar set up for the party people. I'm glad I went. -And I guess there was a reason for not going to see Les Miserables tonight. :)
-
And then after the party, I hopped on the 1 Train back to Times Square since I had to make an exchange at the Virgin Megastore. Then after passing the Golden to say HI to DR Jason, I hopped back on the A Train back uptown. And here I am! (Ah, a A Chorus Line reference.)
-
I have not seen him in many films...
Wow!
All on Sunday....Naked Scots....Dead Man Cell Phone....Cat and Dog pictures...AND DRJOSE tries to kill somebody at ACL!!!
Never a dull moment here at HHW...or in our lives....well...some of our lives.
Wow!
Miss a day and you miss a lot at HHW!
While staying with my DH's extended family in the Twin Cities over the weekend, I had my first exposure to the old television program "Pee-Wee's Playhouse." It's certainly a trip!
It was indeed something else... And my sister thought Romper Room was weird....
Congrats to George on a successful show!
DR JMK there's some kind of Judy Garland play coming to Indy.....it's about her JUDY AT THE PALACE recording in '61 or '62......doesn't list any author or anything....
So DR MUSICGUY will be in my neck of the woods tomorrow. For how long?
Watching a film from The Joan Crawford Collection.
Not in Topeka!
Her daughter had surgery and she filled in for her while she was recovering. Christina's character was 28 years. Joan was 63 at the time.
I will try and get my scanner to cooperate tongiht. There isa still of Joan in a soap book I have.
Lots of wonderful stills of Ruth Warrick
Another trivia question
What oscar winner's brother was a child actor on the daytime serial, THe Guiding Light? Him and his brothers were child actors in NYC during the 1940s and 1950s. The oscar winning brother had training in theatre before he went to film.
And I have a picture of him when he was in this role...
And I am always up for recommendations!
I simply adore Bunty Aur Bubli, from the opening train song, to the appearance of the investigator, everything is SOOOOOO right about this charming flick!
Sometimes, MBarnum, I blame you for my Bollywood taste, but, if it were only a momentary phase I WOULD blame you, since it's now a passion, I have no one but myself (and the Indian film industry) to blame.
BUNTY AUR BUBLI is one of the few which I have purchased out right after renting from Netflix.
-
I just finished watching HOT RODS TO HELL ;D
Now, I must hie myself off to bed.
Nighters!
-
Well I have just arrived back to the Island of Long after an absolutey splediferous day in NYC
-
Back from our general meeting, and a swell dinner with Cason and Heather at Genghis Cohen, where the rock group Ripley was performing in their music room. For those who don't know, Ripley is the rock group headed by Alice Ripley, so we got to chat with her and hubby Shannon, who was the drummer for The Brain here in LA.
-
Glad to hear you had a lovely day in NYC Vixmom!
-
While I understand why some of you would urge "making nice,"...
I would have a brief conversation with my good friends Smith & Wesson in plain view!
The Vixter and I had a lovely dinner at John's Pizza with Jason, Jose and FJL
we laughed and laughed and welll you know how it goes... then Jason went off to Avenue Q to peddle his wares and the rest of our party wandered over to Juinors to partake of some dessert
The boys then left us and the Vixter and I went to the performance of Les Miserables.
WONDERFUL!!
SPECTACULAR!!!
We had wonderful seats, no large-headed giants sat in front of us at the last second and there was no unseemly chatting or candy wrapper rattling
and then , just when it seemed it couldn't get any better... it did!!
Darling, generous Jose had arranged for us to go backastage and meet Megan McGinnis (who played Epinonne beautifully. Everyone around us, including the big bald truckdriver looking guy behind us were blubbing during "Little Drop of Rain")
Megan very kindly took us to walk on the set and signed the Vixters' program. An absolutely lovely ending to a wonderful day
Thank you Jose!! :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
As we were leaving the theatre Chip Zien, who plays Thenardier, came out to sign autographs, he seemed quite bemused when the young girl in the Girl Scout uniform told him that she loved in him in "Into the Woods" and made no mention of the show she had just seen!!
-
What a gent he is Vixmom!
Also what a beautiful treat to end a delightful day with lively company and an excellent musical!
Memories to cherish, indeed!
-
And a good evening to the HHW family - East & West coasters.
(I guess that's morning on the East coast by now)
-
Whoops! and those not on the coast.
I spend a lot of time in SOUTH Dakota lately. Deadwood is such a wonderful work.
-
Jason,
In all the excitement of going backstage Vix left her book behind,) the one she was reading at John's Pizza)
Do you think the theatre would toss it out or if I call tomorrow do you think they would still have it? Do you think they would mail it back to me if I paid postage?
Do you think the theatre would toss it out or if I call tomorrow do you think they would still have it? Do you think they would mail it back to me if I paid postage?
DR vixmom - Glad to hear you had a wonderful time during and after the show. Megain is one of the nicest people I know. Did you get a chance to meet her hunky boyfriend/fellow castmate, Michael?
As for the book... Where did she leave it? In the theatre (in her seat)? Or was it left backstage? If it was left backstage, I could check with the stage doorman tomorrow. -DR Jason could too.
-
I love the mesh of history and invention in the "Deadwood" series.
-
DR JMK - I'm also in the "lay low" camp. Yes, killing him with kindness may work, but it sounds like the person you're dealing with would most likely take your "kindness" as a sort of mocking, which would just make him angrier. If anything, let him know the police will be checking in from time to time. -And maybe refer him to an anger management class. ;)
-
"Billy Elliot" opens in Sydney in November. I've just had an email about tickets. They've not included an offer of free flights and hotel accommodation though. I guess I shall have to pass.
-
DR vixmom - What was the name of the book? DR Jason or I can check with the box office tomorrow.
DR Vixmom: Generally, all found items are turned in to the house manager, who in turn gives them to the box office for safekeeping. If it was left backstage, I'm not really sure where you'll find it... ???
Tom... Great deal on the cds...
I have been to DEadwood before.
-
I can't believe I'm still up! As you all know, I didn't sleep well last night and then got up early to do some banking business at the lake and zip back to Sioux City. My appointment for Tuesday thought it was Monday, so I got her message called her back and rescheduled for Monday afternoon, which meant after a very brief stop at home, I went to the office and didn't get a chance to eat anything until I got home about 5:00 PM.
After a nice New York strip steak, I took a nap. Oh, that's probably why I'm still awake.
I didn't take the case, btw, long story, let's just say there are some cases that are messed up enough that it's best to stay away from them or send them to someone who has lots and lots of experience. I was very straight forward with her and told her exactly why I was referring her on to someone else. I must have handled it well, because as she left, she asked for a bunch of my cards to hand out to her friends who need immigration help. Cool.
-
I know what you mean Cilla about still being up... I have to work at 1030 am
Cool on woman taking your business cards.
-
Speaking of immigrants, they are resettling Burundian refugees in Fargo
-
Well, think I'll try to get some sleep. Our temps are finally down to the 80s and it's supposed to rain tonight...at least I hope it does, we really need it. Night all
-
I've not been looking for Cds much of late - todays' quick visit must have been fate. Thus I am listening to "Kismet" from the same Turner/Rhino series of soundtracks. (This CD thanks to DR FRançois).
-
The answer to tonight's second trivia question...
Christopher and Glenn Walken...
She shared the role of Michael BAuer in the 1950s on Guiding light. CHristopher was trained in theatre and Glenn did more televison action as a child. Christopher went on to win an oscar for THE DEER HUNTER
-
Sometimes fate delivers the most interesting things....
-
Well... 12 hours from now I will be ending my lunchtime "Music and the Mirror" rehearsal, so I guess I should head to bed... Oh, but before I do...
-
So... I finally got another response from the person who's been handling my "delayed" invoices/payments. I had informed her that I had received one check this past weekend, but had not received the other payments for the other invoices. Well... She then informed me that she checked again with her accounting division, and even though she had given them my invoices a month ago, it turns out that they had lost one of them. -Of course, they "lost" the one for the much larger amount. She told me that the check would be cut tomorrow. Well... I wrote back to her to inform her that I originally sent her the invoices TWO months ago, so if she had just given them to her accounting division just ONE month ago, well... You do the math. -And I think there's a pretty good chance I'm calling the union office tomorrow morning too.
END OF RANT.
We think she left it at her seat. Megan was very sweet, we di not meet her boyfirend but I asked her about a cast member who caught my eye, he played one of the studentse, teh one who was always sitting on his own drinking, 1. I loved his performance and 2. He looked very familar... she said he was your friend John who had just made his Broadway debut....
so please tell John how much we enjoyed his performance... I do not know why he looked so familar though unless he was in some pictures you may have posted
-
My apartment is still warm after being closed up for three days when temps were in the upper 90s
-
The old "your male is a Czech" line no doubt. (or something like that)
-
DR vixmom - What was the name of the book? DR Jason or I can check with the box office tomorrow.
John? Hmm... Well, Drew Sarich is also in the ensemble - and he was Armand in Lestat, so... I'll have to check the current cast list for a John.
