Title: THE ROLLING STONE GATHERS NO MOSS
Post by: bk on July 10, 2007, 12:08:17 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes gathered no moss, but Mick Jagger did gather some moss, which just goes to show you, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently rolling and gathering moos.

Boo is driving me crazy, she keeps waking me up by getting into things and making noise. Obviously she slept the whole time I was gone!

Then I just got to sleep and the phone rang...at 3:00 AM!  Of course I woke up thinking it's something dire,  I didn't make it to the phone and the person didn't leave a message so I looked at the caller id. I think it was a wrong number...

Now I'm awake...

Topic of the Day:  The Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbershop_Harmony_Society) (S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A., "never to be pronounced as a single word"). :) For only two years.  It was fun while it lasted (no, really...it was), but it just wasn't what I was interested at that time to stick with it...or now, even. ::)

And the word of the day is: JOCOSE!
I've seen Joe Cose do his work.  He used to be the warm-up comedian for several television sitcoms that were taped/filmed before a live audience.  He had a warm, ebulent personality.  And he drank a lot.

TOD:

Der Brucer and I have been involved with Log Cabin Republicans for years and years and years.  He's the more active member, I'm just there to make him look good.

And, of course, we are both members of this esteemed gathering called the Hainsies and Kimlets.  (Not to be confused with the Hainslets and Kimsies, who hold their meetings in the room across the hall.)

Thanks for DR VIXMOM for the MIZ report.

Lots of good questions, DR DAKOTA CELT.  I knew a couple of the answers.

Of course Joan on THE SECRET STORM was the brainchild of producer Gloria Monty who later worked on GENERAL HOSPITAL.  In "Mommie Dearest" - the sequence was presented as if it were broadcast live, when in fact ALL of Joan's scenes were taped over a few days....with Joan getting a bit drunker as time went on.

Lots of publicity for Joan and STORM.....

I really don't belong to too many organizations.  I've sat on the boards of the WGA and am currently on the board of Actors Guild of Lexington.  I joined AARP the minute I turned fifty.  I have a membership in AAA which often comes in handy.

Probably the most interesting club I belong to is The Burroughs Bibliophiles which is an literary organization centered around the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs.  Through it I have met and become friends with folks like Denny Miller and Harlan Ellison, as well as artists like Bill Stout, Tom Yeates, and others in the world of comics and illustration.  I'll be attending the BB's annual Dum-Dum (ape-language for gathering) this year, held in Louisville where one of the best collections of Burroughs material is kept at the University of Louisville.

Good morning, all!

I couldn't sleep, stayed up too late, and as a result I slept too late.  We now have two alternate office spaces, one on 37th and one on 34th, if the lease on 27th Street falls through.  Hopefully, the lease on the first should be going to the attorney handling the situation for the Institute and I hope it's settled withn the next few days.

Keep them vibes coming!

More later . . .

I can only say a quick good morning here to all of the H/Ks and DRs assembled and yet to come.

As usual, whenever I set an alarm clock to get up for a flight, I end up waking up 2 hours earlier than I have to and just tossing and trying to force myself to go back to sleep........ ARRRGGHHH..

So now I do have to get ready, get cleaned up, shave my scraggly punim, and then dress so that I look both lithe and stylish while also remaining rugged and butch.

BASEBALL........

It's also been a running joke with DS Betsy and me about our Phi Beta Kappa memberships.  I still have my key and other supporting documentation, but Betsy has none, so I kid her mercilessly about not really being in Phi Beta Kappa.  She counters by informing me she was nominated in her Junior year, a very rare feat.  ;)

Thanks.  In talking this over last night with various people, it was suggested we could get a TRO against the whole subcontractor that the nutcase works for, which would effectively shut down the operation since their only access is a new road they put right next to our property, and most TROs grant at least 50-100 yards "safety zone".  That would no doubt get the property owner's attention big-time!  So we'll have to wait and see.

Other than AAA and the Phi Kappa Phi honor fraternity, I don't beloing to any other organizations presently.

In years past, I did belong (and do loads of volunteer work for) the Metrolina AIDS Project, Theatre Charlotte, the Charlotte Atari Users Group, and all the professional teachers' organizations for my local, state, and national groups (NEA, SCEA, LCEA).

The most fun social group I ever belonged to was the Charlotte Broach Society. It was ten gay men (some single, some partnered) who had holiday event parties, sponsored fund raising events for charities, and had a dinner at one of the group's homes each month. As people broke up, moved away, etc. the group eventually disbanded, but for about two years, it was THE most fun.

As for the Topic of the Day...

Hmm...  I did belong to a few groups on high school, but nothing really since then.  I think the closest thing to an "organization" would be when I do shows, and I'm part of a Company.  If I can go with that, then I'd have to say the most well run ones have been when I've been at Arena Stage, and Stage Manager Extraordinaire, Sue White, has been at the helm.  Even when the show/process/experience has been subpar, she always manages to take care of everyone, make them feel safe and comfortable, and keeps people on their toes (in a good way).  Plus, she cooks a great Weekend Brunch for everyone!

Mind you, I can't hardly blame them —
Those are probably the best arms on Broadway,
I know why nobody cares to hide them —
I should know,
I've eyed them.
So good! Oh!

Are they made o'steel?
The best arms on Broadway —

And although the over 100 degree weather might put a damper on the work next door to you...I am certainly not looking forward to the next few  days of triple digits and no air conditioning! Yikes!

The one thing that has been keeping me strangely calm throughout all of this--I got the multi-CD boxed set of Singers Unlimited yesterday and have been playing them nonstop (they were actually on yesterday when the guy flipped out).  Very relaxing and soothing, not to mention gorgeous.

DR JMK, I have been remiss in not sooner wishing you a happy outcome; the man's psycho and mean, so be careful.

You can't reason with someone who is mentally off or high on some drugs. I'm not saying this person is, but his behavior is way out in left field so you just don't know.  You can't just talk to everyone... after 21 years as a criminal defense lawyer, that's one thing I know for sure. At times just letting it rest is the best thing to do

DR Matt H.:  When you do get around to transferring the 2007 Tonys to disc, you might want to note especially Christine Ebersole's performance from Grey Gardens, in light of what she shared with Seth Rudetsky about what was going on behind the scenes:

Quote
You do eight shows during the week, but you're also spending time at Radio City doing camera blocking. Morning of the Tonys, she had to wake up at 7 AM so she could rehearse again at Radio City in full costume. Then, out of her costume, went to the theatre to do the show back in costume again. Finished the matinee, got into her glam gown for the red carpet. Got to Radio city and put back on her costume again. When she was backstage she was reviewing the new speech Craig Lucas had written her to start the number. It set up who and where her character was. Well, as Adam Guettel was making his speech in front of the curtain accepting his Tony, literally seconds before she got onstage, a stagehand told her that her body mic wasn't working and handed a hand held mic that was twice the size of Bob Barker's. What about her handheld props? How could she carry a mic and her gloves, pocketbook and guidebook? She shoved them all into her other hand and went into a full anxiety attack/shut down. Kelli O'Hara must have noticed it across the stage, even though Radio City is the size of a football field, because Vicki heard Kelli yell "It'll be OK! Don't worry!" Well, that relaxed her enough to walk out onstage and start her newly memorized speech into her microphone while walking forward towards a moving camera and also looking at the stagehand to the side of the camera who was making enormous hand motions. She thinks he was telling her that her body mic was still broken. This went on til the last moment of the speech where he gave her a big "A-OK" sign and took the microphone away and she immediately started singing. You have to watch it to see her panicked walking, shifting eyes and last minute mic trade off. Terrifying/hilarious! Of course, the number sounded beautiful…and the hat trick at the end worked!

You wouldn't happen to be named Neville Chamberlain by any chance, would you.  ;)

3D, a lot of people here have known me for years (oy) and have been to my house, so you are probably at a disadvantage.  What you may fail to realize is our property is completely fenced (6 foot high in most places), so there is absolutely no way our dogs could ever harm anyone, even if they wanted to.  As anyone who has met our dogs will attest, they are big lumps of love.  The fact that they were barking is irrelevant--this man was throwing rocks at them onto our property.  When I told him to stop, he went absolutely ballistic, which was backed up by the completely neutral testimony of another neighbor who saw the whole thing.  In fact she was so scared of this idiot, she went inside and locked her doors until the police came.  So attempting to reason with someone this angry and irrational is simply something I'm not going to do.  I didn't say I was going to get a TRO, I simply said it was advised we should consider it if this idiot tries anything else.  I have lived in this neighborhood for going on 12 years and I defy anyone to find a neighbor anywhere here who I have ever had a cross word with for any reason.

Yep, it's hot in NYC.  But again, it's summer, so it wasn't a surprise when I stepped outside.

*Alas, because of all the dancing, they tend to keep the the A/C on low - or off - in the rehearsal hall for ACL.  So, of course, I walk in today to play the lunchtime Cassie Dance rehearsal, and not only is Baayork Lee there - who I love and adore and am used to be in the room - but Patrick Vaccariello, the conductor, and Bob Avian, the director are there too.  Talk about working up a sweat.  Thankfully, the drummer is in for these rehearsals which makes my life a lot of easier.  However, I'm still learning how they're pacing the whole scene into the song, and that underscoring can get tricky, so...  No major mistakes today, but I was definitely feeling "tentative" early on.  -And Patrick didn't come up to the piano and yell at me afterwards, so that's always a good thing.  ;)

Hi, JMK

Sorry, I wasn't as clear as I should have been.

My sympathies are entirely with you. The guy you had the run-in with was at fault and clearly unstable.

I just thought that before taking any drastic action, you should just talk to the guy's direct boss - i.e. the subcontractor - to get rid of the guy, and if he refused, then bring the hammer down.

I now know that some individuals on campus have lost it.....

A patron came up and stated the bathrooms were not working properly and so i investigated. When it is after hours we have to call campus security aka Cop wannabees... They mentioned there was a watermain break and were surprised that the library was still open.

After that comment, I inquired as to why the library was not informed of this matter. The woman stated that she thought there was no one at the library and we closed at 4. I promptly informed her we closed at 7 and we had all summer and as for as many years as I could remember during summer terms. She then called me a liar... I promptly told her to call the library tomorrow and inquire with administration what the hours were. She was convinced I was making it up.  I have sent an email and voice mail to her supervisor about this matter.

bk, if you like the orchestral music of Howard Hanson, you might be interested in a new release from Naxos:  a 2 disc recording of a live concert performance of his opera, Merry Mount.

It's actually been out for over a year - I have it - not a great recording, but really nice to have.

Back from rehearsal, lunch, meeting and errands.  The fact that we're still on page five is a little odd, isn't it?  Is this a slow news day here at haineshisway.com?  There will be a bitch-slapping to be reckoned with.  David Wechter will be here in a couple of hours to work on stuff.

DR MBarnum -  I really enjoyed THIS movie:
Kal Ho Naa Ho: Tomorrow May Never Come
According to Netflix:
Quote
For Naina (Preity Zinta), life is difficult ever since a family tragedy turned her world upside down. Overwhelmed with responsibilities, Naina has no time for herself and feels as if she's 23 going on 50. Enter Aman (Shah Rukh Khan), who, like a breath of fresh air, moves into Naina's tiny Indian neighborhood and helps others resolve their problems. Aman may be the "answer man," but does he have the answer to Naina's burning question

Veer-Zaara is one of the finest films I have seen.
According to Netflix:
Quote
Spanning two decades, Yash Chopra's epic love story of an Indian man and a Pakistani woman delves into the conflict between the two countries. After aiding Zaara (Priety Zinta), Indian Airman Veer (Shah Rukh Khan) falls in love with her. They spend a blissful day together, and even though Zaara's engaged to another man, Veer tells her he loves her. Zaara returns to Pakistan, but Veer can't forget his true love and boldly travels to her homeland.

For t hose writers with websites out there, have you ever written something, and known you've written something - so much that you can even remember the exact phrasing of what you wrote, you can remember putting it online - and yet when you go to look up that page in your website it isn't there?

This has just happened to me. I guess I must have dreamed it all..

Scary.

Parineeta  is a wonderful epic film.
According to Netflix:
Quote
Based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhye's novel set in early-1960s Calcutta, this romantic drama centers on childhood friends Lolita (Vidya Balan) and Shekhar (Saif Ali Khan). Both children struggle with difficult family situations, and through the years, they grow closer and come to rely on each other to get through the tough times. When a wealthy man (Sanjay Dutt) pursues Lolita, Shekhar finally realizes he's madly in love with her.

Skip wrote the music for one of the one-acts, which will be at 59E59 in August:

From Broadwayworld.com:

John McCormack and J.J. Kandel in association with The Open Book will present "Summer Shorts," a festival of new American short plays, at 59E59 Theaters (59 East 59th Street).  Performances begin Thursday August 2nd, and continue through Thursday August 30th.

"Summer Shorts" offers nine one-act plays, eight having their world premieres, in two separate evenings. The two series will run in rotating repertory (a detailed description and schedule follows below). "Summer Shorts" "represents some of the country’s best writing, directing and acting talents coming together to celebrate theatre, summer and the short form. In one evening of theatre, audiences will be able to sample a diverse range of voices and styles in an elegant and straightforward presentation," state press notes.

The playwrights contributing to "Summer Shorts" include John Augustine, Michael Domitrovich, Tina Howe, Skip Kennon, Warren Leight, Leslie Lyles, Eduardo Machado, Tom O’Brien, Keith Reddin, and Randee Smith. Maruti Evans will provide scenic and lighting design.

"The Open Book was founded by Bill Bonham and Marvin Kaye in 1975, and has been continuously operating ever since. The company was formed to develop a streamlined alternative to America's overproduced traditional theatre. Its mission is to present the best of all worlds of literature -- prose, poetry, drama, even nonfiction -- to our culturally diverse tri-state audience, with emphasis on new under-appreciated literature of excellence that is likely to be bypassed by traditional theatre companies."

59E59 Theaters is the state-of-the-art theater complex in a spectacular location on 59th Street between Park and Madison Avenues in Manhattan. Owned and operated by the Elysabeth Kleinhans Theatrical Foundation, a not-for profit operating foundation, 59E59 Theaters has set an invigorating policy of bringing new, challenging and experimental work to a new neighborhood.

The schedule follows:

Series A

AMICI, ASCOLTAT By Warren Leight
Directed by TBA
"A son's imminent departure for Iraq prompts his father to examine the fate of men in his family when sent to war."
AFTERNOON TEA
Book and Lyrics by Eduardo Machado, Music by Skip Kennon
Directed by Billy Hopkins
"A two-character musical about the power of reconciliation.  The play tells a story of the later years of the author J.M. Barrie’s life.  After twenty years of being apart, Barrie’s wife comes back to reconcile their marriage…but he is still lost in the world of fantasy, youth, and Peter Pan."
RAIN, HEAVY AT TIMES By Leslie Lyles
Directed by Billy Hopkins
"A woman and a wealthy aunt pass a rainy afternoon in a Red Bank New Jersey restaurant, one eye on recently purchased undergarments the other on the bartender."
REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE By Michael Domitrovich
Directed by Eduardo Machado
"After splitting up with his girlfriend Roxanne, Jeff is looking for a role he can sink his teeth into. When Jeff's meeting with Eli, an emerging playwright, starts to go sour, he learns just how flexible the meaning of 'reality' can be. "

Series B
SKIN DEEP By Tina Howe
Directed by TBA
"A fleeing nymph with a greenish cast to her skin dashes into the R train late at night. The only other rider is a celebrated dermatologist who happens to be sitting under his own ad. Can he save her?"
MERWINS LANE By Keith Reddin
Directed by Billy Hopkins
"A three character play set in a bus station, strangers meet and find they're much less strangers than they thought."
FATHER’S DAY By John Augustine
Directed by Daniel Winerman
"Augustine takes a look at murder, justice, gun control, and whether or not it is wise for the privileged to volunteer -- knowing all the while they could be sued. With the help of the actual transcript from the confession of the man who murdered Augustine's father... the author attempts to make some sense of murder. Then and Now."
THE P.A. Written and Directed by Tom O’Brien
"A comic look at the day in the life of a production assistant on a movie set in the streets of New York City. With Ean Sheehy"
WINDOWSHINE By Randee Smith
Directed by TBA
"Two estranged siblings come together over the impending death of their father, each on their own separate journey, and find that they don't know how to communicate."

Performances will be Tuesday through Saturday evenings at 8:15pm, with matinees Saturdays at 2:15 and Sundays at 3:15.  Tickets are $18 each (59E59 members $12.60). Waiting for Mr. Wechter.  Three overnight packages from amazon did not arrive.  I've been credited for the shipping costs, but it's insufferable that this stuff won't be here until tomorrow, when I will NOT have the evening free to watch anything.  The guy tried to argue with me that they didn't guarantee overnight shipping, and I got rather vocal with him and suggested he look at his own website to see that they clearly DO guarantee it.

My book discussion was interesting & fun.  This hostess always serves tasty treats, my favorites today were freshly baked scones and homemade lemonade.

This afternoon Keith, Sherlock & I had a nice walk around town.  We all have favorite places we stop in and visit.

While artichokes and corn on the cob were steaming I had a nice chat on the phone with my good friend in the Philadelphia area.  I haven’t spoken to her in awhile & it was great to catch up.

DR MBarnum -  I really enjoyed THIS movie:
Kal Ho Naa Ho: Tomorrow May Never Come
According to Netflix:

That one is on my list. One of the co-stars is Dara Singh who made a lot of Bollywood sword and sandal and Tarzan films in the 60s.

May I likewise  recommend DOSTI (2006)

Karan (Bobby Deol) and Raj (Akshay Kumar) couldn't be more different. Karan has all the wealth and comfort a person could ask for, while Raj has only himself to call his own. Yet, despite their differences, the two are the best of friends, their bond seemingly unbreakable ... until something unbelievable happens that threatens the core of their connection. Was it a misdeed? A misunderstanding? More importantly, will their friendship survive?

and 36 CHINA TOWN (2006)

Mystery's afoot in Chinatown when a rich woman (Isha Koppikar) is murdered and the list of suspects (including Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and Johnny Lever) is longer than a dragon's tail. When a casino owner turns up dead and a mysterious suitcase becomes evidence, the investigating officer (Akshaye Khanna) must identify the killer from a host of possible culprits, including a playboy, a drunk, the domestic help and the owner of the suitcase.

Two of my favorite recent Bollywoods.

Had some fun viewing tonight. I began with another MURDER SHE WROTE episode. This one had Jessica's niece who sells real estate involved in another murder. This character was featured during the first season with Jeff COnaway as her husband. Same character but a different actor playing him in this episode, but Genie Francis is still playing Jessica's niece.

A very rich guest star cast also included Dack Rambo, George Maharis, Chad Everett, Vicki Frederick, and Brenda Vaccarro.

Very sad news about Doug Marlette. He was the editorial cartoonist for many, many years for THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER before moving to Atlanta. I think his Pulitzer Prize may have been shared between his work on the OBSERVER and the Atlanta paper he worked for (CONSTITUTION? JOURNAL?) during the year he switched over.

Next, I watched SKYJACKED. I'm not sure I had ever seen this before, but it was as terrible as described. The ending was ludicrous, and while I enjoyed seeing the people in the cast, the script was numbingly bad and direction flat as a pancake.

And another death to report. He sure made it to a ripe old age and I just watched him the other night in the 1936 film 36 HOURS TO KILL.

Charles Lane

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) -- Charles Lane, the prolific character actor whose name was little known but whose crotchety persona and roles in hundreds of films made him instantly recognizable to generations of moviegoers, died Monday, his son said. He was 102.

Lane, whose career spanned more than 60 years, appeared in such film classics as "It's a Wonderful Life," "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" and "Twentieth Century." He also had a recurring role as the scheming railroad man, Homer Bedloe, on the 1960s TV sitcom "Petticoat Junction" and appeared often on "I Love Lucy."

His crisp, stage-trained voice and no-nonsense appearance made him a natural for playing authority figures. He was a judge in "God Is my Partner," a prosecutor in "Call Northside 777," a priest in "Date With an Angel" and a member of Clark Gable's newspaper editorial board in "Teacher's Pet."

Although the roles provided a good living, Lane objected to being typecast.

....He turned to the stage for variety, appearing in a wide range of roles in more than 100 plays, most of them at the storied Pasadena Playhouse.

Lane was working in the insurance business and dabbling in theater company productions at night when Irving Pichell, a well-known actor of the time, advised him to study at Pasadena.

He was eventually spotted by a Warner Bros. scout and cast in his first movie, an Edward G. Robinson-James Cagney melodrama, "Smart Money," in 1931.

Lane remained at Warner Bros., sometimes working in three or four pictures a day. He would be rushed from one set to another and handed his few lines.

In 1934, Frank Capra, then on his rise to prominence, cast Lane in a horse-racing film, "Broadway Bill." Capra liked the actor's work so much he included him in nine more movies, including "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" and "You Can't Take It With You." In Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life," he was a rent collector who shocks his boss, the evil Lionel Barrymore character, by telling him that hero James Stewart's character is a good businessman.

Lane became good friends with Lucille Ball when she was a chorus girl and he was cast in RKO musicals, and she went on to cast him regularly in her 1950s TV show, often as an impatient bureaucrat at odds with the bumbling Lucy.

Lane continued to act into his 90s, and when he accepted an award from cable television's TV Land channel in honor of his 100th birthday, he made a point of saying he was still available for work.

Charles Lane lived to be a 102! WoW!

I also remember him on Bewitched as various clients of McMahon and Tate. Perhaps most memorably on an episode from the first season when Samantha took him to the North Pole to see Santa Claus

I'm so very glad that XANADU got a great review in the Times. I'm not one to claim that a bad review from Brantley can make or break a show, but...it's been known to happen, and to shows that play much bigger houses than the Helen Hayes. It's good to know that old Ben has a sense of humor left. :)

It's hot. I'm not happy about it. I have my A/C up on high and it's not doing much to cool down the jernt. So I just treated myself to an Italian Ice. Now I want another. :D

I've been watching episodes from The Saint megaset, starring Roger Moore.

I used to love these shows as a teenager (though not quite as much as The Avengers), but Simon's smirk and the way the women fall over him are starting to irritate me more often than not, these days.

(But The Fiction Makers is still great!)

One Britshow I wish they'd release over here is Department S/Kill Jason King starring Peter Wyngarde. I only saw a couple of episodes 30 years ago but I loved them..wonder if I'd feel the same now.

Also Man in a Suitcase. And Doomwatch!

and The 10%ers!

Yes, it's teeny. The cast totals out at 11 - 14 with swings. And, IMHO, it works perfectly being that small.

Tom Baker's the Doctor for me, followed by Jon Pertwee. Eccleston wasn't that bad...I haven't seen enough of the new guy to judge...

The acting was not bad in the movie, just hte production values. It was actually taken from an actual episode and the script was adapted from screen. I have both the original eppie and the movie. Funny when you watch both and you can almost predict the scene and the dialogue in the movie.

It is very much based on the eppie.  THey did change some around but if you are a dedicated Who fan you pick up what episode it is from. It is that obvious. For a person who is completely unfamiliar with the show they will not notice it.

Very warm here, too.

I received an email from the director of THE FANTASTICKS today about 5:15 pm telling me that one cast member would be away from rehearsal tonight, and that the pianist would not be in until 8.....we will just work on a couple of dances....bring my CD player and music.

Which would have been fine, except I have choreographed from the score and hadn't really worked with the movement AND the music together....

So....I cleaned up NEVER SAY NO and took it in.  I didn't feel good NOT being prepared....I hate that.

But we did get it staged.  Of course everyone else was there watching and giving suggestions, since they hadn't been informed that the rehearsal was....not as scheduled....which isn't quite right...since we don't have a rehearsal schedule anyway.

So we started the ACT TWO run thru at 8:20.  El Gallo has decided that he needs to give everyone directions, sing along with ALL the songs, and conduct the score, too.

So Henry and I finally climbed out of the box and took Matt away.  But when we got to ROUND AND ROUND, El Gallo said...."Do we have to do this song?  I don't know it....let's just skip it."  And the director said "Okay".....which of course means that Henry and I were cut out of the rest of the evening.....

Oh, and it was hot!

Actually, Dakota - you don't mind if I call you Dakota - it's not that difficult of a trivia question for me for TWO reason:
1.  I'm the biggest Springsteen queen on this here site, so, I know me some Big Man music.
2.  My trivial mind holds information as to who was dating whom and when. . .

Ergo, since Mr. Browne was romantically linked to the star of Mr. Howard's SPLASH, the actress in question would be one of the stars of that justifiably maligned film STEEL MAGNOLIAS, Miss Daryl Hannah - who also is featured in Ridley Scott's BLADE RUNNER. . .

In any case...  I'm glad Isherwood liked Xanadu, and he does point out that the show constantly makes fun of itself throughout its 90-minute running time.  Is the show for everyone?  No.  But if your in the mood for something fun and brainless (in the good sense), it's not a bad way to spend an evening.  *And remember, if you come to the box office in roller-skates or roller-blades, you get a nice discount on your tickets.  :)

So, after meeting up with my friend, Brian, for dinner at City Grill... and then walking up a block to Levain for dessert... :)  We walked down Broadway to 54th Street, since he had picked up a ticket to see 110 in the Shade at Studio 54.  Well, since I had not seen the show yet, and since I had gone ahead and printed out the new discount offer/voucher before leaving the apartment...  I walked up to the box office, and asked for a single... "Well, the best seat I can get for you tonight would be fifth row, orchestra center, off to the right."  DEAL!  *Needless to say, my friend was a little jealous since he was sitting up in the mezz on the far-far-right - however, he still had a good view of the stage from there.  In any case...

What a beautiful show, and a beautiful production.  I know there are some people out there who don't get Audra McDonald, but I'm not one of those people, and tonight, I really got her.  A portrayal that manages to be new and yet still traditional at the same time.  And, needless to say, her singing was impeccable.  -And I was surprised at the number of phrases she chose not to sing "pretty".  Very effective.

The leads all did fine jobs, but I was most impressed with Bobby Steggert who plays Jimmy.  I've been reading some interviews with him here and there, but I had no idea just what to expect from him on stage.  He manages to totally avoid the caricature of a simpleton while keeping him naive and less-worldly.  And for someone who's never really sung before, he handled himself quite well.

Why in the world would they keep the air conditioning off when they are dancing?????

Well, they basically don't want to keep the room too cold since the coolness can sometimes wreak havoc with the dancers' muscles - it can literally "shock" them sometimes.  -Even some ballet companies have the thermostats adjusted in auditoriums to help keep the dancers bodies warm(er).

The room never really gets hot, it just gets warm.  And during the long breaks, they do turn the A/C back on.  I was just a bit nervous today playing for the MD and for the director - since it was the first time they were in the room.  -Also, since things are being put together in a sort of piece-meal fashion right now, the new Cassie (well, she'll be the matinee Cassie) has yet to have an actual music rehearsal with the conductor/music director - and the "people" in the room knew that.  Alas, since I was more or less on my own with the pacing and tempos, it was a bit tricky knowing when I should push and when I should pull things along.

*However, I did manage to express my interest in the upcoming tour today to some of the people in charge today, so that was most definitely a good thing.

Well...  Even the conductor for the tour is not yet official even though he's been told he'll have the job.  However, when I spoke to him, he did say there weren't any other tour personnel lined up, so that's a good thing.  And he also told me that it would be a good thing to let the MD know that I was interested in the tour.  And since I know all three keyboard books, well... I'm pretty sure that will work in my favor.  :)  In any case, no real plans, contracts, etc., will be made until the late Fall at the earliest.

Tonight I watched a movie my mother brought home. It was the 1972 british Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The actors were all splendid, and the score by John Barry was very pretty, although I felt some of the songs were rather annoying.

I loved the fact that ninty percent of the dialouge was straight out of the book. I have a copy of all Lewis Carrol's work in it's original handwriting.

AH!  I remember that movie!  We watched in grade school.  Also, now I'm remembering some theatrical version of "Alice" that was at the Smithsonian for a while.  It was very cool - it was done with puppets and animatronics, and maybe even some live actors - I can't remember correctly now.  But I do remember the whole set transforming when she would "Eat This"... and the Cheshire Cat disappearing and reappearing.

I gotta tell you.  I have been dealing with the madness of trying to get the Milla CDs, which were supposed to be here yesterday and have yet to make an appearance.  I had no response to my several e-mails of today or my phone message and I am here to tell you I have no time to deal with this crap - I set aside an hour yesterday to get the discs in packages and to the post office.  I now have to find another hour, whenever they arrive.  Milla has a concert at Town Hall Thursday night and I really wanted her to have CDs to sell.  Will she?  No way in hell, unless they get here bright and early tomorrow.  Otherwise, I will have no time to ship, as I have a noon meeting, followed directly by a rehearsal, followed directly by going to Culver City to dine.

I certainly have a particular bias but going to see Patti in Gypsy sounds like a total nightmare to me.  I've just listened to Dolores Gray's "Rose's Turn".

I saw a great version that was done with effects and lighting and colored shadow puppets behind a giant cloth once. I loved it!

TOD:
We are currently members of, but will leave some of when we move:

Cobb Landmarks (we thought it was a preservation group but soon realized that it's more of a social group with a preservation 'theme".) We work with the Christmas tour of homes and the annual garden tour, and have done documentaries for them.

Cobb Preservation Foundation-a group we helped start to actually save historic buildings. We rarely meet but have still accomplished a lot, and have saved/restored/sold a half dozen structures.

IMPACT (Involved Mariettans Planning Actively for the City of Tomorrow) an activitst group formed 6 years ago to protect our square when our city councilman tried to build a 12 story building in a town square of two story buildings. DH has served as an officer, including president. We were getting a lot done but the current president has decided to "work with city goverment" and bought in to all of the city's plans, with no defense of our quality of life. So this group is fizzling.

The LOOP GROUP-Another group we helped start, originally as a neighborhood watch group since we had so much crime. Then it became more of a group that served the community, especially the Hispanic neighbors. After the "ethnic cleansing" by the city, this group is now just a vanity group for the councilperson who heads it up and controls who serves as officers instead of letting the group elect them. This group is also fizzling.

Peachtree Hills Neighborhood Associaiton: Our new neighborhood group---a very active and established group. We're been volunterring with them for 2 years, even though we haven't moved there yet!

Marietta Tree Keepers--we raise money to plant trees, and then plant them in public right of ways, to make up for all the developers who DON"T.

Friends of Nesbitt Union Chapel: the was formed to protect ruins of an old chapel. DH is president. This is one of the groups we may shed when we move.

Cobb Land Trust-preserves greenspace and aquires land for public use. DH is on the board.

River Keepers--monitor water quality in our streams. We may resume this after we move, since Peachtree Creek will be in our backyard and it will be easy to do. DH won the data collection award for the whole start of Georgia last year.

Beltline Study Group-studies the impact of a light rail that will encircle Atlanta and go, literally, behind our backyard.

Little Criminals: Randy Newman internet fan group which often turns into a political flame group. It finally got to be too much for me but I am still friends with many of the members.

HHW: "Nuff said.

I really don't belong to too many organizations.  I've sat on the boards of the WGA and am currently on the board of Actors Guild of Lexington.  I joined AARP the minute I turned fifty.

You can join when you're 50???

As usual, whenever I set an alarm clock to get up for a flight,

I read this as "get up for a fight", which also seemed very butch, and at the same time very well-planned.
