Well, you've read the notes, the notes had you up in arms, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're up in udders.
-
And the word of the day is: POCOCURANTE!
-
I took along nap and do not feel like sleeping, although it is nice and warm and cozy in my little room.
-
Welcome twenty GUESTS. Shares available.
-
I think my avie will soon be replaced by something that isn't annoyingly pixilated.

DR Edi your "in box" is full!

It's slightly less full now!

Ask BK:
Will you be doing a casting session in LA for people who might happen to be out there at the moment but might be willing to relocate temporarily to NY for the show?
-
DR Laura, yes, that was me that posted about the disappearance of my friend's mom. He is trying to remain hopeful, but the longer she is gone, the less likely the news will be good.
-
Ask BK:
Will you be doing a casting session in LA for people who might happen to be out there at the moment but might be willing to relocate temporarily to NY for the show?
Yes, anyone who wants to read, can come see me here - they just have to be willing to get to NY on their own dime. In fact, I had a call today from someone who wants to audition - a person from the cast of the film I like to call The First Nudie Musical.
-
Sorry to hear about Doug Marlette. He was much loved here in Atlanta, and the first political cartoonist I read regularly. I didn't know he was writing books, too.
I'm sure he would be dismayed by the current state of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which is cutting loose many of its veteran writers, including movie critic Eleanor Ringel, after almost 30 years of columns. Now they've decided to go with sydicated columns because "people don't know the difference".
-
Will we never get to page two?
-
My favorite political cartoonist is Jim Morin, of the Miami Hearld, also a Pulitzer winner.
-
I'm still wondering where Mr. Ron Pulliam is!
-
That was weird - I posted the above and the whole of the bottom of the page turned to gobbledegook.
-
Yeah, I don't get it, frankly. He's certainly posting on the film music board - did someone offend him in some way? I just never understand this stuff, but then I shouldn't even try.
-
I guess I'm tired now.
-
And yet, I'm still agitated about this CD crap.
-
Agitation does not equal sleep.
-
Nor does sleep equal agitation.
-
Make that twenty-one GUESTS. Shares available. You'd think that ONE GUEST would take a share, just for the HELL of it.
-
But nooooo.
-
I am my own frenzy.
-
Adrianna, I like that version of ALICE---it's a great cast, especially Spike Milligan as the Mock Turtle and Dudley Moore as the Doormouse (before he became a household word.)
I saw this at one of Atlanta's last movie palaces, wich was soon to be destroyed. Alice herself, Fiona Fullerton, made an appearance.
I bought this years later on VHS, and like SONG OF NORWAY, it didn't seem quite as good as my memories of it on the big screen.
-
Adrianna, as you can tell by my quote, I am a Lewis Carroll fan, too. Do you have the book, "The Annotated Alice"? Essential, IMHO.
-
Miss Patti has left the room.
-
I think page two is near at hand, which is good if you're up in arms.
-
DR Jose, you may be thinking of Jan Svankmayer's ALICE. Was the White Rabbitt a stuffed rabbit who kept spilling sawdust and scooping it back up and putting it back? That's one of my favorite versions.
I have the Richard Burton version on VHS (this is a version of the Eva Gallienne that I had worked on back in the '70's) but I haven't watched it yet.
-
Chemistry? Yeah, chemistry.

You watch your phraseology.

OK. I don't know what made me think of this just now, but perhaps someone here will know. Years and years ago, when I was a kid, I happened on part of a sci-fi movie on TV. Somehow, our main characters found themselves in a time warp - real time had stopped, or at least was moving v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y, and they were outside of it. And they were going here and there, trying to alter an outcome in real time. The only other thing I remember about it is that they had to move very slowly, or they would burn up. Or something like that. I remember being intrigued by the premise. For all I know, it could have been a really lousy film. With that most sketchy information, can any DR tell me what movie it might have been? :P
I'm fairly certain the movie was in black & white.
-
Maybe "clockstoppers" was a remake of an earlier film. Sounds like a similar plot device

Good morning DR Ben.

DP Colin and I have only three more episodes of "Deadwood" to watch.
I would not have believed I could get so involved in a "Western". I think Matt H. was the only other person on the board who watched it.
-
good morning all
-
Didn't Judy Kuhn sing Just Around The River Bend & Colors of The Wind from the soundtrack of POCOCURANTE?
-
Larry and I disagree on Audra McDonald, Victoria Clark and Christine Ebersole but we do agree about Xanadu. I don't begrudge them their good reviews, I'm glad that another Broadway house is full and actors are employed but I just don't "get" this one. I also think if Mr. Brantley had reviewed the show it would not have been quite so glowing. Perhaps Mr. Isherwood has a better sensibility for this show.
I didn't hate the show. It wasn't "bad" in the way Pirate Queen was bad but I just saw it as more drek being spilled on stage. It certainly is mindless and that can be fine (I enjoyed All Shook Up) but I found it mostly tedious. Miss Testa and Miss Hoffman are very, very funny and I liked Tony Roberts but I didn't find Kerry Butler very good at all. Granted I saw James Carpinello (also not very good) when I saw the show but I don't think the change of one actor would make me like the show much more.
It scares me that I actually agree with Clive Barnes on this one (I think he's a sad old toad who should have stopped reviewing years ago).
Oh, well. It's only a show. Good luck and congratulations on the reviews I say.
I would see the show again to see if I should change my opinion but only if I got a free ticket. I don't want to spend TKTS dollars and it's not on TDF anymore.
And that is the end of the news (a Noel Coward reference)
-
Probably Michael. I thought it was a deadly poison on the tips of Spears. But then I don't know the color or the colour of the wind. (the songs were the only worthwhile part of the film)
-

Perhaps that was it...the memory is very hazy! And, as you and others have noted, it's not a particularly original premise...

It's not pretty...

After my little diatribe about Xanadu, I do want to say that Jose and I agree about 110 in the Shade. I lked the entire production and I thought Miss McDonald was glorious. It was a beautiful performance and if her name had been called as winner on Tony night I would not have been suprised. She and John McCullum as father and daughter were wonderful. She even won over one of our theatre mates who, as much as she enjoys McDonald, was resistant to the color-blind casting. She said after the show that it didn't matter. The color line disappeared and they were just "family".
-
By coincidence my mail today contained a CD of the Marketts "Out Of Limits". (well it's close and it's bedtime here)

a QUESTION FOR THE NYC CAST
The Lincoln Center production of South Pacific which opens in Jan 2008 is considered the first Broadway revival of the musical (Hard to believe) but why is the 1967 Lincoln Center Revival with Florence Henderson & Giorgi Tozzi NOT considered a Broadway Revival?
-
And a cheery glass of orange juice to you, DR TCB! :)

Maybe the Wells Fargo Wagon will have a delivery for bk this morning.

That is probably how they are sending the CDs.

Well, this will be a brief missive, as I have to be at some business stuff pretty soon.
A glorious good morning and big hugs to our lovely east coast hainsies and kimlets...
.... and a good morning for later on to the dear, Esteemed, and many-armed BK, and the the west coast studlies and lovelies.
And now, I must find coffee for my gaping maw, and then skeedaddle!
-
Bk - Milla is performing in the Town hall concert on Monday night, but arranging to get the CD's on sale there on Monday wouldn't be realistic unless she has the CD's in hand when we discussed. It's just not something she can deal with on the performance day.

Good morning, all! I have little to report this morning; I have more charts to work on, we're still waiting for a signed lease, we're still waiting to move, and my dance card is filling up with other matters.
A friend sent me an email this morning that tenor Jerry Hadley shot himself yesterday but I can find nothing in the news. Anyone hear anything?
DR Michael S, when the Music Theatre of Lincoln Center did SOUTH PACIFIC in the 1960s, I would guess the production, as well as the other shows they did under Richard Rodger's title as producer, was considered similar to the limited City Center runs of musicals. The productions were specifically summer runs in the New York State Theatre during breaks for the City Opera and City Ballet.
DT tomovoz, I too am a fan of DEADWOOD.
There is an early 1950s British film of ALICE by puppeteer Lou Bunin, with Carol Marsh as Alice. It was suppressed by Disney so it would not compete with their animated version. I have it on VHS, and it's interesting. My problem with the John Barry score for the 1970s British film is a lot of Don Black's lyrics: when Alice sings in "I've Never Been This Far Before" the world is like a birthday cake/and I mean to take a piece before I wake, she doesn't know she's asleep!
Oy. Dumbass lyricists. He should work for Sir Andrew.

Yeah! What he said.
The Lincoln Center space was not considered a "Broadway" house back in 1967 and the show was not playing at the Beaumont (IIRC). Neither the New York State Theatre or the Met space are considered Broadway houses and SP played at NY State Theatre.

Actually Burton did play Alice.
Indeed, Burton did play Alice. It was a nice performance in an otherwise drab production.
-
And a very good morning - a cool one per chance - to Dear Reader Laura.
And a nice warm night to you!
-
Good morning, fellow Dear Readers. It is cloudy and cool here at 6:15 a.m. and only 90 degrees. I have had my coffee walk already.
-
Wednesday morning greetings! It's much cooler here in SW Ohio today, but still very humid.
DR MusicGuy - welcome to the Midwest!
DRs Jason & Jose - have fun today at Lupone's Gypsy!
DR Elmore - vibes for lease-signing soon!

I cannot find anything on this online.

That was one of the 8 shows that DH Richard and I saw in 7 days, between Christmas Day 1982 and New Year's Day 1983. What a glorious week that was in NYC!
-
Indeed, Burton did play Alice. It was a nice performance in an otherwise drab production.
I'm going to watch this tonight!

Are we talking about the Great Performances version? I thought he played the White Knight in that.
-
I thought he played the White Knight in that.
Ah, is THAT who Barbara Cook was singing about? ;)
-
The Burton in Alice that I meant was Kate as Alice, which we saw at the Virginia Theatre (is that still there?). I felt like that house kind of belonged to me ;)
-
Are we talking about the Great Performances version? I thought he played the White Knight in that.
I saw the Eva LeGallienne ALICE production as well on Broadway but for Great Performances several roles were recast with "names." Curt Dawson played the White Knight on Broadway and Richard Burton did the PBS taping.

Oh, I see that the Virginia Theatre is now named for

I would not have believed I could get so involved in a "Western". I think Matt H. was the only other person on the board who watched it.
I don't remember anyone else talking about it during its three year run except me. DEADWOOD was a show I grew to love more with each season, so I was totally devastated when the decision was made to cancel it. These were fascinating characters, never predictable from one moment to the next, or just when you thought you had someone's personality figured out, he'd throw you a curve ball, and you'd be knocked out of your socks.
With THE SOPRANOS gone now, the only series I'm watching right now on HBO is ENTOURAGE. All the others have ceased operations.
-
I liked DEADWOOD, then I lost HBO in the digital switch, and missed the last two seasons....or maybe just the last one....

Emergency: Our air conditioning is not working. Man has been called. Hope it is not the same man in charge of delivering Mr BK's cds.

Yeah! What he said.

Ah, DR Ben beat me to the answer.
All of the Music Theater of Lincoln Center shows that I saw (SHOW BOAT, KISMET, seems like there was one more) were at the New York State Theatre.
-
Oops (Spoo)! DR Elmore, I believe, did occasionally talk about DEADWOOD with me. I had forgotten. Sorry.
-
Good morning!
Hot, muggy, miserable. That looks to be the report for the next five days at least.
-
I will be watching JESSE JAMES today. I'm hoping the Fox DVD looks good because it is a three-strip Technicolor production, and Tyrone Power in good Technicolor (especially in his younger years) is awesome to watch.
-
I'm expecting a new Criterion DVD in the mail today: IVAN'S CHILDHOOD which I've never seen. But since my mail didn't come until very late in the afternoon yesterday, I doubt it'll get seen until this evening.
-
And, of course, a new episode of RESCUE ME comes on tonight. After the shocking conclusion to the last episode, the fallout from it will no doubt occupy much of tonight's story.
-
Supposedly another triple digit day here in the NW, but it's awfully (actually, nicely) cloudy this a.m., so maybe we'll have some relief.
Tomovoz--guess what's on this Singers Unlimited boxed set I talked about yesterday or the day before? A very nice choral version of We Could Be Flying!
-
DR SINGDAW this may be the Outer Limits episodes that you are thinking about.

It also reminds of a Doctor Who adventure with Hartnell in the role in the early 1960s and that was in black and white.

DR JMK - I meant to respond to this yesterday... I do remember coming across a piano reduction of the whole "Lt. Kije Suite" when I was a working at the sheet music store. I think it may have been published by Masters Music Publications. -However, I just checked their site, and it's not listed, so... -But I do remember it being carried by one of those reprint houses. Have you checked the Dover listings?
-
TD, do you shop at Indiaweekly.com? They have the best prices in town! Check out the 39 cent DVD sale! Woohoo!

DR Jason - 12:30? ;)

The only other thing I remember about it is that they had to move very slowly, or they would burn up. Or something like that. I remember being intrigued by the premise.
Also sounds like a Star Trek episode. In 'real' time, the characters heard the buzzing of gnats, but in the 'alternate time' they stood like statues while the characters - Kirk - tried to figure out what was going on. And if they bumped into something, they'd turn to dust.
-
It looks like the Jerry Hadley info was a rumor started on the Opera List.

Yeah! What he said.
The Lincoln Center space was not considered a "Broadway" house back in 1967 and the show was not playing at the Beaumont (IIRC). Neither the New York State Theatre or the Met space are considered Broadway houses and SP played at NY State Theatre.
Which is the same reason that the Patti LuPone GYPSY that we're seeing will not be eligible for any Tony awards. While City Center technically complies with the required seating minimum (499+ seats) and sits within the geographical boundaries to be considered a Broadway house, it is not one. I suppose they could make a special exception, but even then it'd probably only be considered a special event, which would rule out any awards for the performers. If it's as good as everyone says, they may consider a limited run in one of the (many) empty theatres before Patti goes off and does the show in London (another rumor floating about).
Did I mention that I'm SO EXCITED to see this show today?? Well, I AM!
Oh, and...good morning, everyone! :D
-
The person who sent me the Hadley info is a subscriber to the Opera List; a reader from Washington DC had reported that Hadley killed himself. Hadley's manager confirmed that he did shoot himself but at 9:20am this morning he was still alive.
I just got an update that he is braindead, so the situation is grim.

Oh... And a few interesting tidbits from last night's performance...
-A gentleman next to me had an iPhone. And the people sitting in the row behind us just had to see it for themselves, so... The man was very cool about showing off his new toy, and said that everyone is asking to see it. He also said it was sort of strange that more of his direct circle of friends didn't already have one too - and he considered himself the less-technology driven one of the bunch. In any case, it was cool to see one up close.
-And while walking out of the theatre I noticed someone very familiar looking standing back at the bar. It turned out to be Lonny Price. I guess he was checking in on the troops. ;)
-Oh, and Phylicia Rashad was in the audience last night too. And there were two VERY excited young woman during intermission who went up and talked to her for a bit. And then after they had finished talking with her, they rushed out to the lobby to meet their other friends.. "OOoooohh, I can't believe I just talked to her! I need to get outside so that I can scream... That was sooo cool. She was sooo nice!" :)

HELLO TO RON PULLIAM!!
Hope you're soon back with us on a regular basis!

CALMING VIBES TO MR BK. May your CDs arrive very soon!
-
Must dash. Have a great day, everyone!

Sad news about Jerry Hadley, if the reports turn out to be true...
-
Good luck on resolving your lease issues, DR Elmore!
-
Yes, I'm very sad to read about Jerry Hadley. Very disconcerting.
-
I think I have Mr Hadley on a CANDIDE recording....I think.
-
He's on the massive SHOW BOAT recording. DOn't you have that?
-
I guess I will head down to read just a bit before starting on lunch preparation.
WBBL.
-
He's also on the "Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall" recording. He's in the SWEENEY TODD opening medley. I think he also sings "With So Little to be Sure Of" on the second disc.
-

After the matinee of Gypsy, I'm playing another one of those mock auditions for A Chorus Line like I did last week. Should be fun. Again. So, keep the home fries burning. -hmm.... Home Fries... :)

ASK BK DAY QUESTIONS:
Which performance from your television performances you would like to see on DVD?
Which performance is your favorite?
Which performance you would like to see buried in the Marianas Trench?
When you went to auditions what other actors did you always see that were reading for the same part you were?
I wouldn't mind seeing my Doctor's Hospital on DVD - either the original episode, or the version where they took two episodes and made it into a TV movie.
My favorite performance that I've ever given on film? Nudie Musical. On TV - they're all the same - choose one.
Buried performance - even though I wouldn't mind seeing it, clearly The Young Lawyers, my first TV guest shot.
I was always up against the same people - Wes Stern, Todd Sussman, Joel Kimmel (then an actor, not my brother, and not a writer, yet), and later on Sal Viscuso and a few others. We'd all get the same number of jobs - it was pretty even.
-
No CD news. Looks like I'm now going to have to generate a new master and call the other print and pressing plant - of course, that's going to be a pain in the ass, but I guess I'll get to it if I have no news in the next forty-five minutes. This woman will RUE the day.

Isn't this the same place that gives you grief on a regular basis with every release? If so, why do you return to them?

Ginny is closing in on post 5555.

Question for BK:
Why aren't the rights to your play available to theater companies as soon as you finish the script?
How does that process work?
-
Dear Friends:
Many thanks to all of you who have inquired after my well-being. Also, apologies to those who have been concerned.
I am taking a break, of sorts, from daily postings. It's true I post at other forums. But not to the extent that I've posted here over the years, and certainly not frequently, of late.
I am sorting through some issues that have been on my mind, as well as facing a heavier workload at the office. I'm truly not sure when/if I'll return "to form" but I do consider myself part of the HHW family and will post from time to time.

Urgent News Item:
PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY DESTROYED BY FLOOD
Crawford, Texas - A tragic flood this morning destroyed the personal library of President Bush. The flood began in the presidential bathroom where both
books were kept.
The books have been lost. A presidential spokesman said the President is devastated, since he was almost finished coloring the second one.
The White House tried to call FEMA, but there was no answer.

Isn't this the same place that gives you grief on a regular basis with every release? If so, why do you return to them?
The woman who is the go-between between me and the plants, has used several different plants - we'd actually been getting things on time or even early for a few releases, but it's turned to merde for the repressing of Skinner/Ripley and now this.

Question for BK:
Why aren't the rights to your play available to theater companies as soon as you finish the script?
How does that process work?
Because we control those rights, and until we make them available through one of the publishing houses, the rights can only be granted by us.
-
Why aren't the rights to your play available to theater companies as soon as you finish the script?
I guess my question should have been, why don't you make those rights available as soon as you finish the script.
Because we control those rights, and until we make them available through one of the publishing houses, the rights can only be granted by us.
So you could give that British company permission right now if you wanted to? But you want them to deal with a publishing house instead?
-
Question for BK:
Can you repeat how one goes about acquiring shares in The Brain from Planet X?
-
I guess my question should have been, why don't you make those rights available as soon as you finish the script. So you could give that British company permission right now if you wanted to? But you want them to deal with a publishing house instead?
Yes, of course we could make the rights available to anyone at anytime. The issue is that doing so makes it seem like you've released it for stock and amateur, and then that pretty much damns it in the eyes of producers who might like to put on a first class production in NY, for example, or elsewhere. I still may let the UK people do it, since it's a university and wouldn't have visibility.
-

Ooh! I get it now! I hadn't thought of it like that.

ROTFLMAO!!!!
Hey, DR RonPulliam! Good to see you.

I do consider myself part of the HHW family and will post from time to time.
Yea! :D

FJL has the same issue with The Last Starfighter - they've had several inquiries, I think, and have had this same decision to make. Maybe he can chime in with his thoughts, too.

this may be the Outer Limits episodes that you are thinking about.

Are we talking about the Great Performances version? I thought he played the White Knight in that.
Burton did it on B'way, Myrle did it for Great Performances.
Whoops--I'm misrembering! Kate Burton repeated the Le Gallienne production on PBS, and Myrle Street did the Elizabeth Swados musical version.

Betsy found a viola/piano duet at the library, which is fine--the viola part is on the piano score, so I can punt.

Thanks presumably to the Kritzerland CD of Last Starfighter, we've had a good amount of inquiries from schools and small theaters - but Bruce is right, it makes it look less attractive to potential commercial producers. Also, when you give it over to schools and small theaters, the writers can't expect to have any involvement in those productions, so it could diminish the value of your property if you start getting (in visible markets, at least) sub-par reviews of the piece based on such productions.

Agitation does not equal sleep.
Have you ever tried sleeping on top of a washing machine?
I thought not.
Same general effect.
It's the spin-dry cycle that does me in, every time.

Ron Howard, or the "Stunt" guy?

Has anyone seen this trailer (http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/11808/) for the new mysterious J.J. Abrams movie? They started showing it this weekend with the TRANSFORMERS movie. It's causing all kind of to-do on the web.
It's exactly like something out of one of my invaders from space/end of the world nightmares.
-
Also sounds like a Star Trek episode. In 'real' time, the characters heard the buzzing of gnats, but in the 'alternate time' they stood like statues while the characters - Kirk - tried to figure out what was going on. And if they bumped into something, they'd turn to dust.
(over the intercom): Clean-up on aisle seven!

Yes, I'm very sad to read about Jerry Hadley. Very disconcerting.
Depression kills.
What is worse, most people living with depression cannot recognize it for what it is - an emotional instability caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. It mimics other emotions, and amplifies them in degrees that can be terrifying.
I generally try to stay away from this board when I'm depressed, because it causes me to over-react. Fortunately, I've a very good support net in der Brucer, who can usually spot my depressions before I do.
My heart goes out to Mr. Hadley.

Yesterday's errands:
Our first stop was the Rehoboth Beach Farmer's Market. I found some very nice black raspberries, some banana peppers, what should be a very good cheesebread to go with tonight's quiche, and some cucumbers. I don't know what all der Brucer found, other than some fresh peaches, but I think one of the peaches, along with my raspberries, should make a very nice fruit salad, dressed with some key lime yogurt.
-
We then went over to Partner's for a well-earned Rob Roy or two. While there, we got in a conversation with one of the waiters, Jason Robert Cook, who is on a break from the national tour of Jesus Christ Superstar. We mentioned our DR Jose, and Jason remembered the name but couldn't quite place it with the face. Jason will be returning to the tour in November, as dance captain and part of the ensemble.
Dear BK: Could you please send me by personal mail the info on casting for Brain? I don't know if Jason would fit any of your requirements, but every contact helps, right?
-
Finishing out the errandizing, der B and I headed up to the movin' pik-chure thee-a-tur to get our tix for Harry Potter, Part Five, and then to WalMart to get a new toilet seat (and a stack of cheapo DVDs), and some peanut butter at the store. And home again, home again, hippity-hop.
Fletcher, the Dalmatian, is not pleased with the new toilet seat. The old one was cushioned foam, and easy to lift. The new one is hardwood, which is heavier and produces a definate clank when it falls back onto the toilet rim. The clank doesn't bother him, since he's deaf, but he doesn't like how we've made it harder for him to reach his favorite water bowl.

Dear Friends:
Many thanks to all of you who have inquired after my well-being. Also, apologies to those who have been concerned.
I figured you were still alive. A google on your name showed some activity on the other boards.
Keep well.

I have no ideas as to what to post for a page seven dance.
None at all.

The woman who is the go-between between me and the plants, has used several different plants
So it's not her so much as the plants, and you may find the same trouble wherever you go.
Though of course she shouldn't ignore your emails!
-
Had a long meeting with the pressing plant lady. I now know where the plant is and can simply drive over there if there are any further problems. They screwed up and sat on the print files for two weeks before delivering it to the printer - hence the print isn't finishing until this afternoon, at which point it will go to the plant - the discs are already pressed, so I'll have them tomorrow.
I told her that if we're to continue, and it's a big if, I will need guarantees from her and the plant regarding due dates, and if due dates are not met, then the job is free. If either of them are unwilling to do that, then I'm gone.
-
Speaking of gone, I must shortly be on my way to LACC for a meeting.
-
- but Bruce is right, it makes it look less attractive to potential commercial producers.
Seems like a Catch-22. You don't want university theaters to produce it because it cheapens the product, but if you can't get a commercial producer, no one will ever see it anyway.

DP Colin and I have only three more episodes of "Deadwood" to watch.
I would not have believed I could get so involved in a "Western". I think Matt H. was the only other person on the board who watched it.
We recently watched the first two episodes. Season 1, disc 2 arrived yesterday.
Too often we have trouble understanding what they are saying which is very distracting.
-

-
A question for those DRs who enjoy television series on DVD via Netflix, etc...
I believe you get them in the mail, one disc at a time...i.e., Season 2, Disc 4.
How long do you typically wait for delivery of the next disc? Is it a problem remembering what was going on with the various story arcs when the next disc arrives?
I'm thinking it might make a difference, too, which series. For example, Lost seems more intricately plotted, whereas the delay wouldn't bother me on a show like Quantum Leap, where the story arcs don't reach over many episodes.
-
I forgot to mention that while I did not get to stop and eat at Papayaking in NYC, they did have one at the airport where I had one of their delicious hot dogs.
-
Last night, in the middle of EUReKA, there was a series of clanks eminating from the bathroom. The protest was duly noted. Hilarity ensued.
;D
-
I love just saying her name! :)
I know, I'm weird! :P
Not weird, or we both are. Her name is fun to say.:)
When we order a series on NetFlix we usually begin with the first disc, just to be sure we want to continue. Then we space the discs, maybe two or three numbers apart, on our queue.
With DEADWOOD we received the 2nd disc a couple of days after returning the first one. Since we don't watch more than one episode a night it works for us. You can place the entire series at the top of your queue and get them faster.
-
Very glad DR Ron Pulliam posted to give us the head's up. Now that we know what's happening, we can all relax.
-
I began my afternoon finishing SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM which I began rewatching last night.
It's so funny: even though I've seen this four or five times now, I always forget portions of the story. For example, when Donald goes to the prison to see the man arrested for the murder (he's innocent), I didn't remember that this even happened this time! And the next-to-final scene with Morgan Fairchild I had also forgotten from my last viewing.
-
Sounds like beaucoup de frustration with the pressings, about the only consolation being that I hadn't placed my orders yet so it was a good reminder. Back to work tomorrow and I'll be able to get myself Kritzerland ready.
-
Next, I watched a MURDER SHE WROTE episode with another big guest star cast: Donald O'Connor, Connie Stevens, Anne Francis, Elaine Joyce, Sheldon Leonard, Gavin McLeod, Donnie Most. The three girl singing group is reuniting for a special, and a murder happens in the same theater where another unsolved murder had happened 25 years previously. Very entertaining mystery; actually, Jessica solves two murders in this one.
-
IVAN'S CHILDHOOD did come in the mail today, so I watched it to end my afternoon, a haunting story of a preteen doing spy work for the Russians on the German front at the end of World War II. This was the first film of Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky (probably best known for SOLARIS), and what an auspicious debut it was!
-
I will be watching JESSE JAMES today. I'm hoping the Fox DVD looks good because it is a three-strip Technicolor production, and Tyrone Power in good Technicolor (especially in his younger years) is awesome to watch.
To me, Tyrone Power is reason enough to watch ANYTHING.
-
Have you ever tried sleeping on top of a washing machine?
I know several folks who swear by that as a sure fire method to get babies to sleep.
Maybe it mimics the effects of riding in a car. I also had one friend who strapped the baby on her back on the riding mower (seems dangerous to me, but...) and it always put her baby to sleep. Sometimes she did this even when the lawn didn't need mowing!

The issue is that doing so makes it seem like you've released it for stock and amateur, and then that pretty much damns it in the eyes of producers who might like to put on a first class production in NY, for example, or elsewhere.
The situation is similar for film festivals. If you premiere your film at a small festival, the big ones will have nothing to do with you. So you have to decide at which festival you want to premiere and then hope they'll accept you, because you've already passed on smaller ones who would have shown your film. I understand the thought behind it, but it's still nervewracking!
-
Our first stop was the Rehoboth Beach Farmer's Market.
There's a new market opening down the street from the new house in a church parking lot on Saturday mornings. I'm quite excited about having local produce so near. I'll be taking my mom there when she comes to check on our progress on the house. (I know she'll HATE the colors, but DH and I like them, so...)

Fletcher, the Dalmatian, is not pleased with the new toilet seat.
Why don't you just leave the seat up, like most guys do?

Will DR Jose play for the BRAIN auditions in NY?

So sad about Mr Hadley.
DR François is a great fan as am I.

I didn't know, or forgot, about the second book. I will have to get it. My book group read THE BRIDGE & it was one of our best discussions. We all loved the book.

I bought this DVD at a dollar store for...wait for it...$1! And someone (Rodzinski, I think) posted a link where one could download the original soundtrack and make your own CD, which I downloaded, but haven't actually burned the CD, yet.

I just called the bookstore & asked them to hold their last copy of MAGIC TIME for me.

a QUESTION FOR THE NYC CAST
The Lincoln Center production of South Pacific which opens in Jan 2008 is considered the first Broadway revival of the musical (Hard to believe) but why is the 1967 Lincoln Center Revival with Florence Henderson & Giorgi Tozzi NOT considered a Broadway Revival?
Revisionist history? ::)

I've been trying to arrange for the fundraiser funds to be put in my account, as we have items to pay for starting in a week or so - we all worked out how that would be done, but since the funding is coming through school channels, it just takes forever to do anything. But, I want it all there before I get so inundated with The Brain that I won't have time to deal with it.

And speaking of Patti LuPone...Lady Bird Johnson Dies At 94 (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/07/11/national/main3046985.shtml). (Patti played her in a made-for-TV movie about LBJ, played by Randy Quaid).

Der Brucer and I have returned, having viewed a moom pikachur called Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Hares and jackrabbits are leporids belonging to the genus Lepus. (Four other species of leporid in the genera Caprolagus and Pronolagus are also called "hares".) Very young hares are called leverets.
Members of all genera except Lepus are usually referred to as rabbits, while members of Lepus (which accounts for almost half the species) are usually called hares. However the distinction between these two common names does not map completely into current taxonomy, since jackrabbits are members of Lepus, and members of the genera Pronolagus and Caprolagus are sometimes called hares.
So, what Im saying is a jackrabbit is not a rabbit, its a hare. ;D

No rehearsal tonight so I will get to see SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, although I will miss the results show tomorrow night.

"Many dogs and cats love to drink from the toilet. Thirsty dogs and cats lap up the water with vigor simply because it is cool and accessible. It's much easier for the pet owner who just has to leave the lid open and avoids having to fill up an additional dish with water.
The problem is, toilets are full of bacteria and that bacteria can potentially cause your dog or cat to get sick. In addition, toilet cleaner is extremely toxic to both cats and dogs and there is often cleaning residue in the toilet. Finally, depending on the traces of what was in the toilet, drinking from it can give your pet horrible breath.
Don't let your pets drink from the toilet. Always keep the toilet lid down, and provide cats and dogs with fresh drinkable water each day."

I forget his first name, but his wife's name is Angel. ;)) Anyway, he wants to get and stay in contact with us here in Washington and he's up here now visiting at my parents' house! Bk - Milla is performing in the Town hall concert on Monday night, but arranging to get the CD's on sale there on Monday wouldn't be realistic unless she has the CD's in hand when we discussed. It's just not something she can deal with on the performance day.

The wind is really blowing now & I can hear thunder. Last night we had a lighting & thunder storm without rain. Hopefully we will get rain tonight.

We need rain SOOOO badly. I'm hoping it rains tonight and tomorrow....30% chance so not likely.

RIP JH. He gave me so much listening to enjoy. Golden Days indeed.
I must track down a copy of "Tom & Jerry"
-
Thanks for mentioning IVAN'S CHILDHOOD, DR MATTH. It sounds interesting. Where did you hear about it? I had not.
-
I had far from a relaxing dinner & feel sick now.
We were cooking when the power went out. Then it began to come and go in spurts. While we had power we rushed very fast to finish cooking and then while I was eating, during the on spurts, I rushed to do the dishes. Without power we don't have water.
-
Just added IVAN'S CHILDHOOD to my Netflix queue. Acorn Media just released LILIES, about three young girls growing up in Liverpool in 1920. Sounds like my kind of thing, but Netflix so far doesn't have it. Instead of girls in Liverpool I'll watch the story of a boy in Russia.
-
Hope that JANE'S power--and health--are soon restored.
-
Thank you. I'm calming down now & the winds have died down. Unfortunately we didn't get any rain. Best of all, there hasn't been anymore lightening. It was beautiful to watch last night but I prefer my house not to burn down.
-
SINGDAW, re Netflix, I've been quite impressed at how quickly I receive the DVDs. They receive them very quickly and send the new ones out right away. In fact, it's so fast that I've wondered how they do it. My other mail is much, much slower!
Like Jane, I start with the first disc in a series to see if I like it, but you could certainly order disc 1 and disc 2 at the same time. I'm on the 3-at-a-time plan, which works out well for me. I find that I prefer to rent the DVDs rather than watch on TV because there's less elasped time between episodes. It's really nice to keep the DVDs as long as you want and they have a great selection. There's very little I can't find at Netflix--and I don't rent the blockbuster stuff. I've been much more pleased with them than I expected.
-
Years ago when we signed up the only option was 4 at a time. They arrive faster now due to a larger number of distribution centers.

Tonight I'm going to begin reading "A Thousand Splendid Suns".

The pic looks stre-e-t-ched. What's the correct size, anybody know?

Neat avvie 3D

LOL-I'm very relieved that is only a test!
This was the first avatar i thought of using, but thought it might be too frightening.

DR 3D - I guess it's not as clear in the explaining as we thought - LOL! Indeed, you don't want to release a product generally to community theaters where you have no input because it potentially cheapens the product, but that's only while you're in the process of putting the work out to regional theaters and potential commercial producers. Once the writers have sadly decided that they indeed will not get a reasonable commercial deal, they will at that point release it for general licensing.
In the case of Last Starfighter, there's stuff going on that we're not free to talk about so that if it pans out, there will be commercial prospects. But at some point, like any show, if at that point it turns out to our dubious satisfaction that the major regional and/or commercial circuit will not happen for us, then we would release it generally, first contacting the groups on our list that have already asked. And we are OK'ing permission for a production or two in some cities where it probbaly will not have a detrimental effect on commercial prospects.
-
Dear Friends:
Many thanks to all of you who have inquired after my well-being. Also, apologies to those who have been concerned.
I am taking a break, of sorts, from daily postings. It's true I post at other forums. But not to the extent that I've posted here over the years, and certainly not frequently, of late.
I am sorting through some issues that have been on my mind, as well as facing a heavier workload at the office. I'm truly not sure when/if I'll return "to form" but I do consider myself part of the HHW family and will post from time to time.
It is good to see you RLP, do take care and post when you can. You ahve been missed.
-
In the case of Last Starfighter, there's stuff going on that we're not free to talk about so that if it pans out, there will be commercial prospects.
I'm glad to hear it!
I don't think I said that I've got the CD... but I do... and like it!
-
Jane, certainly you recognize Edna Mode, from Pixar's The Incredibles!
I knew she looked familiar ;D
-
There's a Centralia, Washington. I wonder if there's a connection. :)
Not sure....
Alexander Griggs, the found of Grand Forks, ND, used to run steamboats of the Columbia and was mayor of Wenatchee after he left North Dakota.
-
3D-Too frightening for sure! I much prefer your current avatar, it makes me laugh.
-
Why is life always so full of tough decisions? I just got an e-mail telling me that I won a choice of $5,000.00 or five free ringtones! Who can make a choice like that???
-
I just spoke to Ron Raines; I gather that Jerry Hadley has died.
How very tragic.
-
Of course we welcome the rare visits by 'roos to the garden.
When they do visit, do get grey or red roos? Do you get Wallabies also?
-
Condolences to freinds and family of Jerry Hadley
Also condolences to freinds and family of Lady Bird Johnson

Vibes to all who need them...

It is too darn hot! The temperatrue in Tacoma today topped out at somewhere over 100 degrees. We rarely get those temperatures in the Puget Sound region. The cats and I are suffering, oh yes, we are suffering.

Cooling vibes for TCB, Angel & Nicky.

Will we never get to page nine?
Sooner than you might think!

A bar of virtual - and therefore no calorie - chocolate to anyone who can tell me who that woman is. You've all heard her very distinctive voice, I'm sure, either in movies (in particular a 1959 offering) or TV - even radio! And there's a reason why she's looking so... --I can't say the word or I'll give it away -- here.
-
Our heat went away for awhile...last night was a record low 50 degrees. Tonight's low will be 58...but by the weekend it will start getting hot again
-
I knew Lady Bird was alive because I had been reading earlier in the week that she was ill and very low, not expected to live out the week, so reading about her passing was no surprise for me.
-
Thanks for mentioning IVAN'S CHILDHOOD, DR MATTH. It sounds interesting. Where did you hear about it? I had not.
It's a review copy though I was familiar with the director from SOLARIS (which the fairly recent remake with George Clooney was based on).
-
Angel and Nicky :D
'night
-
I began the evening watching all of the bonus features on the IVAN'S CHILDHOOD disc. There was an analysis/appreciation of the film by Vida Johnson, and interview with the actor who played the character Ivan when he was a child, and an interview with the cinematographer (and there are breathtaking images in the film.)
There was no commentary, and this is a film, going into and out of dreams as it does, which might have benefitted from a commentary.
-
Next, I watched another MURDER SHE WROTE episode, another Jessica-less story though this one was a full-fledged murder mystery that Jessica could easily have been placed into. Story of the murder of a network exec bent on canceling a big network hit because he doesn't like it. Among the guest stars were Dwayne Hickman, Diana Canova, Talia Balsam (wasn't she once Mrs. George Clooney?), and Tim Thomerson.
-
Next up was JESSE JAMES, a very enjoyable western that somehow makes Jesse almost an admirable hero! Power and Henry Fonda are both at the height of their attractiveness (Fonda's blue eyes come through very well), and I enjoyed the wonderful character actors: Randolph Scott, John Carradine, Donald Meek, Slim Summerville, even Lon Chaney, Jr.
Alas, the transfer was variable. No clean up was done so there are speckles and minor damage throughout. There were a couple of places where the colors suffer from misregistration, and a soft scene or two. Some of it looked gorgeous, however, so I'm glad to have it.
-
And RESCUE ME had a fun-filled hour. Lots of jokes, some nice tender moments, and a harrowing fire where they get lost in the building. And Tommy's going to have a male stalker so that looks like fun, too.
-
I didn't get to last night's MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST today, but that's the first thing I'll watch tomorrow. There's one more MURDER SHE WROTE episode on the current disc in the player (another Jessica-less story!). and then I'll decide if I want to waste time on THE BIG CUBE or go for something not in the Cult boxes.
-
I have some writing to take care of, and then it'll be downstairs to bed.
Good night!
-
Cooling vibes to TCB, ANgel and Nicky!
-
I have no musical knowledge or talent (though I know what I like).
Can anyone tell me what instruments are used in playing the Saint theme (the theme from the Roger Moore Saint), especially that high pitched series of notes - penny whistle?
Any help appreciated!

Very sad news about Mr. Hadley. :(
What a day this has been... DR Jose and I enjoyed a loverly lunch at the Brooklyn Diner on 57th St. before we "experienced" Patti LuPone in Gypsy, which was one of the most moving, wonderful theatrical experiences I've ever had. I literally found myself crying during the show without even knowing why I was crying - I was simply overwhelmed by the whole thing.
I know she has her detractors, but Ms. LuPone was absolutely stunning in the role. Her "Everything's Coming Up Roses" was glorious and terrifying and very understated for Patti. Jose and I both had to take a couple of moments, wipe our eyes and take a few deep breaths to recover from it. Truly wonderful. And "Rose's Turn...?" Wow! I can't even describe it. I've seen many Roses. Most of the major ones, actually, either live or on film, and I really can't stress how impressive Patti's performance was. I can honestly say I've never seen anything like it before in my life, and I mean that in the best possible way. She got a standing ovation after "Rose's Turn," which some people would blow off as being standard practice nowadays, but she truly earned it. She took my breath away.
Another great surprise was Laura Benanti's portrayal of Louise. I generally find Ms. Benanti's voice to be beautiful, but her acting quite bland. Not today! I don't know what she and Arthur Laurents had to do to pull that performance out of her, but it was brilliant. To quote Jose, this was the first time I didn't find "Little Lamb" to be boring. And the dressing room fight leading into "Rose's Turn" was very intense and beautifully acted.
Boyd Gaines was quite wonderful, as well, bringing a je ne sais quoi to the role of Herbie that one rarely finds. He was really great and really held his own with Patti. The rest of the supporting cast was fantastic, too...especially the three strippers. Marilyn Craskey gave the most understated performance as Ms. Electra I've ever seen and totally walked away with that number.
And then there's Tony Yazbeck, recently of DR Jose's A Chorus Line. His "All I Need Is the Girl" was the best sung and danced version I've ever experienced. And he's gorgeous. And Ms. Benanti was really wonderful in that scene, too...quite moving.
It's amazing to see the difference between the Sam Mendes (Bernadette Peters) production three years ago and Mr. Laurents' staging now. Mr. Mendes is a fine director and I loved his take on the show, but Mr. Laurents knows this show like the back of his hand (hell, he wrote it!) and his attention to detail and nuance really made me realize the difference between very good and excellent direction.
Anyway, that's my take on Gypsy. I was emotionally exhausted by the end of it, but I cannot wait to see it again...and again...and (hopefully) again. :)
(I even loved it so much I actually paid full price for merchandise!!!)
-
Jason or Jose - Did I miss it or did Patti LuPone not sing "Hold your hats and Hallelujah/Mama's gonna show it to ya" during Rose's Turn at the matinee this afternoon? Unless I was hallucinating, it felt like a line or two was missing.
-
Good Evening!
As for Gypsy - What DR Jason just said!
And more! It truly is "event theatre". Yes, Patti Lupone is the star of the show, but I'd have to say the true star of the show is Arthur Laurents, the playwright, and Arthur Laurents, the director. He really has brought a fresh spin to his own piece. It's not another remounting of his original. I'm going to have to sit down with my script and score and see where some of the cuts and additions - all minor - were/are.
And as for Patti LuPone, she's in incredible voice right now. -And I gather with some of the more operatic work she's been doing lately, that she's really been taking care of her instrument. A truly thrilling, awesome and at time frightening performance.
-
You were there today too DR FJL?
-
Jason or Jose - Did I miss it or did Patti LuPone not sing "Hold your hats and Hallelujah/Mama's gonna show it to ya" during Rose's Turn at the matinee this afternoon? Unless I was hallucinating, it felt like a line or two was missing.
That section was, indeed, cut. I noticed its absence, but just barely.
-
Hiddy-ho, everybody! Can someone please give a quick synopsis/overview of the postings from the past few days to catch me up? I haven't a clew (bk reference) what's been the buzz on HHW. You're errant and truant for a minute, and you're fresh out of luck...
-
Oh - And I liked it so much, that I went ahead and saw it again tonight. :)
And it was still amazing.
And, best of all, when I was standing in line at the box office, someone came up giving away a Galery seat, so... I guess I was meant to see it again tonight.
*And the Gallery seats really aren't that bad, and they're only $25. -Just make sure to get something in the second row and back, otherwise, the rail gets in your line of vision.
-
Yeah, I thought I had mentioned that the other day, that I might not see you there because we were on different floors of the theater. Or did I imagine that I said that???
-
That section was, indeed, cut. I noticed its absence, but just barely.
Yep. It was cut with the consideration of Mssrs. Laurents and Sondheim.
-
My thoughts and prayers are with Jerry Hadley's family at this time. Some of my earliest operatic memories - interesting turn of phrase - are of Jerry Hadley's voice. And he also used to frequently do guest shots on one of the local talk shows in DC. I was always particularly fond of his renditions of "Una furtiva lagrima" and "Lonely House".
-
And now to catch up on the posts...
-
Wow-sa, DR 3-D -- regarding your avatar ... well .... ummmm .... what does one say ...
I know! ... What big eyes you have! (Big Bad Wolf reference)
Or: Ah-oooo-gaaaah! (Who Framed Roger Rabbit reference)
Or maybe: .... bless your heart ....
(LOL -- love it! What a hoot, as they say in Texas)
-
And let me tell you, as fun as Legally Blonde can be - and trust me, it can be silly fun - it doesn't hold a candle to good old fashioned writing like Gypsy. They're not even in the same category.
-
Speaking of Texas, that's where I am right this second -- so my errant and truant behavior does have a purpose behind it. I've been traveling ...
-
Oh, and in honor of DR Mikey -- the word of the day should be:
BOLLYWOOD
(I had to laugh and of course think of dear, sweet, charming Mikey when I read the news that Bollywood was among the 100 words added, inducted, whatever they call putting news words in the dictonary, into Webster today) .... Mikey you're so hip!
-
I will probably get pilloried here for saying this, though - but based on the Tyne Daly revival, the Peters-Mendes revival and this one, I wish Laurents would revisit a few of the "jokes" in the opening Uncle Jocko scene, as long as he's cutting stuff anyway.
(FJL ducks under the table, waiting for tomatoes to be thrown at him)
-
DR FJL -- How was the trip to DC? Did you post an ode about (if so, tell me what day and post number and I'll look it up).
P.S. I want more chocolates!! 3-D got into my last box from you -- and it's empty!
-
(FJL ducks under the table, waiting for tomatoes to be thrown at him)
Whish! Splat!

Now, now, Miss Karen - your box of chocolates has already been consumed, and I've got the pimples to prove it.
-
Now, now, Miss Karen - your box of chocolates has already been consumed, and I've got the pimples to prove it.
That's my point -- between you and 3-D, I didn't get one chocolate out of MY box of chocolates ...
-
I will probably get pilloried
Pilloried .... hummmm ... pilloried ... another good word for the day ...
-
And next thing you'll be telling me is that we didn't send you flowers. Well, if I only had a camera, I could prove to you that your flowers are sitting right here on the table looking absolutely beautiful. So there! 3D didn't even get flowers, just extra chocolates which I ate anyway, so what are you complaining about?
-
I will probably get pilloried here for saying this, though - but based on the Tyne Daly revival, the Peters-Mendes revival and this one, I wish Laurents would revisit a few of the "jokes" in the opening Uncle Jocko scene, as long as he's cutting stuff anyway.
(FJL ducks under the table, waiting for tomatoes to be thrown at him)
No need to duck, DR FJL. I've also wondered about some of those "jokes" in the opening. However, I've just always accepted them as a set-up for just "dirty" showbiz is at all levels.
*And they also give the actress playing Rose plenty of time to make it to the back of the house for her entrance.
-
Could I sound more insane? :)
-
DR MissKaren - Just where in the Lone Star State are you right now?
-
Hey DR Jason ~ Wanna make some extra cash? ( ;) ;))
The narrator and Zubrick from The Brain are willing to sublet part of your living floor during September .....
-
Could I sound more insane? :)
Umm... If you have to ask, well... ;D
-
Yeah, I thought I had mentioned that the other day, that I might not see you there because we were on different floors of the theater. Or did I imagine that I said that???
Or both.
::)
-
Could I sound more insane? :)
No -- that about does it! ;)
-
In other news...
Between the performances of Gypsy I attended today, I played for another mock audition for A Chorus Line. The turnout wasn't as large as the one I played for last week, and, alas, the talent level wasn't as high either, but I was still amazed by the talent and drive of those young dancers.
And for anyone who's watched "So You Think You Can Dance?", we had a "celebrity" attend the mock audition: Sex. ;D
-
DR MissKaren - Just where in the Lone Star State are you right now?
I flew into Austin, but I'm staying at sister's house in Temple (Deep in the Heart of Texas .. where the sage in bloom, is like perfume, clap, clap, clap, clap....opps, I started singing and doing the song...)
-
So, DR FJL - What did you think of Gypsy?
-
Miss Karen!!!
-
I flew into Austin, but I'm staying at sister's house in Temple (Deep in the Heart of Texas .. where the sage in bloom, is like perfume, clap, clap, clap, clap....opps, I started singing and doing the song...)

-Talk about an "infectious" song!
-
And next thing you'll be telling me is that we didn't send you flowers.
You didn't send me any flowers !

THe STars are bright
Deep in the heart of TExas!

You don't sing me love songs...
Ya hardly speak to me anymore...
When I come through the door at the end of the day.
I remember when...
-
..and you and 3-D ate my chocolates -- that's a fine how-do-ya-do
well, I've always got ... Paris, I mean, my ode -- and you can't take that away from me (I started singing again ...)
-
DR RonPulliam - Thanks for popping back in to say, "Hello." We all take breaks from time to time - heck, I've taken one or two... or three over the years. And we all are welcomed back with open arms when we do return. We shall keep your seat cushion fluffed in the Living Room.
-
Texas.... Yes, they stole the Minnesota North Stars ;)
-
Speaking of Paris, has anyone heard from Francois?
-
Really loved GYPSY. Looking forward to a couple more visits.
One caveat: A few of the tempi (tempos?) were faster than I've come to expect, and I couldn't figure out the dramatic purpose for this
-
THe STars are bright

clap, clap, clap , clap!

Ya hardly speak to me anymore...
When I come through the door at the end of the day.
I remember when...
...You couldn't wait to love me
Used to hate to leave me
Now after loving me late at night
When it's good for you, babe,
And you're feeling all right
When you just roll over and turn out the light...
-
OH yes... the Uranus ....
-
The way you sing your ode
The way you belt off-key
Resulted in a node
Oh, no, they can't take that away from thee

And you don't bring me flowers
Any moh-waahhhhh....

However I think Mercury is in retrograde!

We are in the same timezone at the moment Miss Karen!
-
Really loved GYPSY. Looking forward to a couple more visits.
One caveat: A few of the tempi (tempos?) were faster than I've come to expect, and I couldn't figure out the dramatic purpose for this
Hmm... I actually thought a few of the tempi were slightly slower. Hmm...
-
The way you sing your ode
The way you belt off-key
Resulted in a node
Oh, no, they can't take that away from thee
Sound like the cast of A Chorus Line.
Did I say that? :-X
-
I wasn't really bothered by the tempi. The strip sequence felt a lot shorter, but that could be from the re-working.
-
And, yes, I had the LP. Although, it was Neil Diamond's record and not Barbara Streisand's.
-
And you don't bring me flowers
Any moh-waahhhhh....
Now everyone is singing! Yeaaaa! Everyone together now ....
Any moh-waaahhhhh ...
...clap,clap,clap,clap!
-
I grew up listening to my mom's LPs of Babs. I blame her. And Jose.
I also own the Donna Summers "Greatest Hits" album, where Donna's vocals were bumped up to be just slightly louder than Barbra's. Hehe...
-
I say fasta, you say slowa
You like Tartaglia, and I prefer Foa
Fasta, slowa
Tartaglia, Foa
(what the hell am I talking about?)

I think my sense of yuma has slipped into retrograde

"DAncing Queen!"

I think the Encores Summer Stars Series should feature Donna Summer.

I say ta-ma-ta, you say to-ma-toe -- Duck, DR FJL ! Whish! Splat!
-
I think the Encores Summer Stars Series should feature Donna Summer.
She could play the Melba Moore role in PURLIE! I'd pay money to hear her sing "I Got Love."
-
Hmm... I wonder if there are still tickets available for tomorrow night's opening performance of Gypsy at 6:30? Hmm...
*Although, I keep hearing the the official "press" opening is not until Saturday, the 14th. Or maybe things changed? Who knows?
-
I think she's ready to play Mama in RAISIN at this point, though.
-
I think she's ready to play Mama in RAISIN at this point, though.
In that barn of a theatre, no one would know. I hate to be tacky, so I'll just quote Oprah... "Black don't crack."
-
The opening for the cast (party and such) is apparently Thursday, but like The Public Theater does, the press opening will be a few days later. Actually kind of civilized for the cast to be able to enjoy the party without the reviews being out the same night.
-
I grew up listening to my mom's LPs of Babs. I blame her. And Jose.
I also own the Donna Summers "Greatest Hits" album, where Donna's vocals were bumped up to be just slightly louder than Barbra's. Hehe...
Ah... And then there's "drinking game", where you try to keep drinking for as long as Babs hold out that long note after the intro. Crazy theatre people. ;)
-
When they do visit, do get grey or red roos? Do you get Wallabies also?
Not red roos int his area. More than likely a wallaby than a kangaroo. A wallaby is of course a kangaroo wannabe.
-
Ah... And then there's "drinking game", where you try to keep drinking for as long as Babs hold out that long note after the intro. Crazy theatre people. ;)
I have to admit...I've always been envious of Barbra's ability to hold notes the way she does used to. I mean...that's impressive!
-
Jason - Not to be contrary (what am i talking about, I love being contrary :) ), the critics sitting in seventh row center would know.
-
In that barn of a theatre, no one would know. I hate to be tacky, so I'll just quote Oprah... "Black don't crack."
Or in the words of Miss Melba Moore herself after she did Purlie in concert at the Kennedy Center a couple of years ago... A young woman commented on her wonderful skin, to which Miss Moore replied, "I have been truly blessed."
:)
-
Now, whether that "blessing" came from something/someone Divine or from a doctor's office, well... ;D
-
Jason - Not to be contrary (what am i talking about, I love being contrary :) ), the critics sitting in seventh row center would know.
Wha'?
-
Or in the words of Miss Melba Moore herself after she did Purlie in concert at the Kennedy Center a couple of years ago... A young woman commented on her wonderful skin, to which Miss Moore replied, "I have been truly blessed."
:)
Too bad Ms. Moore can't say the same about her recent hairdos. Has anyone else seen the Seth's Chatterbox that she did? It's on DVD, available for a donation to BC/EFA. She looked like Macy Gray on a really bad hair day...
-
I believe we have a good ole fashioned late-night frenzy going on right now!
Yee-Haw!
<clap, clap, clap-clap>
-
Jose - I meant they'd know that Donna Summer was too old to play Lutiebelle in PURLIE and should be palying Lena in RAISIN.

Ah, gotcha now.

::: Dakota hides from MissKaren's flying tomatoes ::::

Frenzy is good!
-
And as for playing Brain auditions... Have any actual dates been set yet? Once I get dates, I can provide a definite answer based on my availability.
-
We have another Françoisless week I think.
-
DR Jose ~ Just for you so you can sing along:
http://www.niehs.nih.gov/kids/lyrics/texas.htm
-
I hope you are able to play Jose...
-
GYPSY LAMB SPOILER
Any problems with the Julie Taymor-esque lamb being walked around on sticks?
-
no francois....
-
no francois....
That makes me sad ...
-
DR FJL ~ Since you ate my chocolates, I'm sitting here eating the mini-Heath Bar and mini-Reeses peanut butter cup I had gotten for you ... sorry, they're gone now ...
-
Sounds frightening DR JFL. I still would find that less frightening than seeing and hearing this particular Rose. (no way can I escape those memories of her Mrs Lovett with the New York Philharmonic. It rates right up there with Bernadette's "Song & Dance" recording. (Not a Song of Bernadette reference)
-
François is on his vacation.
-
me too....
You are here!
-
Miss Karen - Your chocolates (which you've never thanked me for) were Teuscher Truffles
It's the thought that counts.
-
Tomovoz, I suspect even you'd be impressed by LuPone's Rose.
-
Good night, all.
-
THanks for the info...
Tom, when roos visit, do you get red or grey ones?
-
Pleasant dreams FJL...
-
Miss Karen - Your chocolates (which you've never thanked me for) were Teuscher Truffles
It's the thought that counts.
Yes, you are right (as always) -- so thank you for the chocolates (I never got to eat) and the flowers (I never saw)....
...and the ode (that I did get to read) and you can't take that away from me (I wanted to start singing again to get over the sadness of a francoisless week) ....
it's like musical theatre night here at HHW -- we keep breaking out in song...
-
Grey Roos in this area. Red tend to be more "ouback" and bigger.
DR Jose has of course been up close and personal with our local 'roos.
(They still speak of him)
-
A Deep in the Heart of Texas Two Step in honor of page 15 ...
clap, clap, clap, clap!
-
... or Cotton-Eyed Joe ...
bull-sh** (clap, clap, clap, clap!)
-
Tomovoz, I suspect even you'd be impressed by LuPone's Rose.
Well I have forgiven her turn as the old Lady in Candide. There's hope.
-
Now that I'm on Texas time .... it's time to hit the hay
The stars at night
Are big and bright
Deep in the Heart of Texas!
clap,clap,clap,clap!

'Night, y'all !

Karen, have you ever heard of the Chieftains renditions of "Cotton-Eyed Joe"?
They are pretty lively
-
Have you seen Wallabies?
-
Pleasant dreams MissKaren!
-
Karen, have you ever heard of the Chieftains renditions of "Cotton-Eyed Joe"?

No, but is it on their county Plank album? I'll PM you later about it and the song Patty Griffin does with them on it -- I'm about to fall asleep at the keyboard ... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
-
Pleasant dreams MissKaren!
Thanks!
-
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

Possums (ring tailed and brush tailed), Echidnas, Wombats and Wallabies are frequent visitors here Dakota. We have 2 and half acres here - one acre is bushland.
-
sounds like a lovely spread
-
OK - I need to get some sleep...
Goodnight.
-
Goodnight MR Piano
-
I think I am going to hit the hay also...
I am getting quite sleepy.. Pleasant dreams everyone...
Take care and have a good day Tom!

I found out a couple of days ago that a cousin to my sister and I (he's the son of my dad's estranged brother) recently moved to Salem (I think), Oregon. (MBarnum, do you know a guy with the last name of Dougherty? I forget his first name, but his wife's name is Angel. ;)) Anyway, he wants to get and stay in contact with us here in Washington and he's up here now visiting at my parents' house! So, I'm off to meet a cousin! :D Have a good evening all!
Well, I met my cousin John and his wife Angel. They are both very, very nice people. :) It turns out that they don't live in Salem, but in a small town (4000 or so people) near Coos Bay (sp??), and I don't remember what the name is. Oh, well. Anyway, tomorrow, my sister, niece, aunt and cousin and his wife will tour around Olympia. John and Angel are leaving early Friday morning, so this is the only time that we really have to get to know each other...so I'm skipping work!

George-Have a great time with your cousin!!!
Thanks! We just ate dinner (spaghetti), sat around and chatted, but it was fun.

When I came home this evening (at about 10:30 pm), the temperature up in my bedroom was 93 degrees!! :o AND it's at the top of my 3-story town house condo, AND there's no open-able window up at the top! :P The heat just goes up there and stays. I have a couple of fans blowing air around but it still can't actually cool the air. :-\

I just spoke to Ron Raines; I gather that Jerry Hadley has died.
That's very sad. :'(

Thanks, Jose and Jason for the reports! Too bad they can't videotape THIS production for posterity...and commercial release! ;)

And since we're so close...

Gratuitous Post #444!

I think that tonight, I actually will need to sleep down in my first floor living room. It's always been cooler down there since I'm never there and I never have the heat on down there. It's just Too Damn Hot (almost a Cole Porter reference) anywhere else!!

I think the Encores Summer Stars Series should feature Donna Summer.
I'd pay to see that! ;D

The pic looks stre-e-t-ched. What's the correct size, anybody know?
110 pixels by 150 pixels. Here's a modified version of Edna in the correct ratio:

Or this one might be a little better:
