George, I woke up to a very warm bed room....I decided it just wouldn't do and although it's cool outside, the open windows weren't doing squat, so I cranked the air conditioner and it's feeling much better. Maybe I can get some sleep

bk, last evening does sound truly delightful...glad you had such a good time.

And...here's today's notes in Fudd-speak, courtesy of The Dialectizer:

Weww, deaw weadews, it is qwite wate, and my enewgy is waning, but that shan’t stop me fwom waxing enthusiastic about this day and evening’s nice bits. Yes, you heawd it hewe, deaw weadews, I shaww be waxing even as I’m waning. Evewy time I use the wowd waning I feew wike Ewmew Fudd. I awways thought Ewmew Fudd wouwd make a gweat Henwy Higgins. De wane is Spain stays mainwy on the pwain, uh-hah-hah-hah. Oh, now you see what I’ve done? Now I just want to wwite the entiwe notes in Ewmew Fudd wingo. Don’t wowwy, I won’t, but I’m sowewy tempted. In any case, it is qwite wate and I have a wot to say, and I shaww now wax even as I wane. Yestewday was anothew non-stop day fiwwed wif mewwiment and miwf and waughtew and wegs, as weww as the usuaw few annoyances. I got up eawwy, answewed e-maiws, made tewephonic cawws, had a meeting wif CD wady, and then had to hie mysewf to WACC fow a meeting wif the pwesident of the Foundation, uh-hah-hah-hah. Dat went weww, and then I had to hie mysewf back home, whewe I continued to make tewephonic cawws and answew e-maiws. I then had to hie mysewf to weheawsaw wif Joan Wyan, ouw fiwst staging weheawsaw wif John Bosweww in attendance. We stiww used ouw weheawsaw CD, but we set most of the pattew undewscowe, and we wan aww of act two, which, I must say, wowks weawwy weww, save fow ouw ongoing battwing ovew hew penuwtimate song – I’m not backing down, and she knows it, so she’s just going to have to do it and when she does and finawwy commits to it, it wiww be wike aww the othew songs that we’ve battwed about fow fouw months – they become hew favowites. Hew finaw song (pwiow to hew encowe) was going to be hew owd wawhowse, On A Cweaw Day You Can See Fowevew, but I just hate the awwangement and awmost evewything about it. She’s been tewwing me fow weeks how much hew husband wants hew to sing Anypwace I Hang My Hat Is Home, so I thwew out On A Cweaw Day, and we’we doing Home in its pwace. It wiww wowk much bettew. Aftew weheawsaw, I began the incwedibwy wong dwive to deep Cuwvew City to sup wif Miss Wiz Wawsen and hew evew-wovin’ Saw Viviano. Wathew than bwave the 405, I took Benedict Canyon ovew the hiww, and shockingwy, thewe was absowutewy no twaffic. At Owympic, I cut ovew to Ovewwand, and took that aww the way souf into deep Cuwvew City. De dwive took an houw, but it couwd’ve taken a whowe wot wongew. Funniwy, I had a message fwom Wiz asking whewe I was – she’d misundewstood the time and thought I was going to be thewe at six, not seven, uh-hah-hah-hah. I got thewe wight on time at seven, uh-hah-hah-hah. I had the most dewightfuw time I’ve had in ages. Dey have a cute house (a wewative weft it to them), and I was dewighted to find Mw. Jason Gwaae and his evew-wovin’ in attendance, as was Jason’s new dog, Woy. Wiz had made an assowtment of wondewfuw dishes – pasta wif wed sauce and tuwkey meatbawws, a pasta and vegetabwe sawad (out of this wowwd), gweat chicken sawad, some cheeses, and home made chicken nuggets (awso out of this wowwd). We dined on the patio and the convewsation was wiwd, wacky, and pwetty hiwawious. Evewyone was waxing nostawgic ovew aww the awbums we did back in the day, and how peopwe show up at theiw concewts wif aww those CDs fow them to sign, uh-hah-hah-hah. We aww weawized just how speciaw that whowe time was – uniqwe and wondewfuw, wif a weaw honest to goodness wep gwoup of singews. I hope to someday get back to doing that sowt of awbum – I weawwy and twuwy miss it, and the wikes of these singews. Aftew dinnew, we wetiwed to the wiving woom, whewe the aduwts and Wiz and Saw’s two adowabwe sons pwayed Cewebwity. I was the “timew” so just watched evewyone pway, and it was a wot of fun and the waughtew was wong and woud, not necessawiwy in that owdew. De whowe evening was a dewight, and the Vivianos wewe pewfect hosts. Oh, dat scwewy wabbit! And Jason and I awe just so on the same wavewength, humow-wise, that we wewe just howwing wif waughtew the entiwe evening. Aftew that, I came home, but couwd not sit on my couch wike so much fish, since I had to stawt wwiting these hewe notes. Oh, dat scwewy wabbit! I stiww have to catch up on the pwethowa of postings. Oh, dat scwewy wabbit! Weww, why don’t we aww cwick on the Unseemwy Button bewow because, as Ewmew Fudd wouwd say, it’s weawwy weawwy wate and I must get my beauty sweep.

Today, I have an eawwy-mowning weheawsaw wif Joan and Bos – we’ww wun the entiwe show fwom stawt to finish without stopping. Aftew that, I must come home and hopefuwwy the Miwwa CDs wiww be hewe and I’ww get those shipped out pwonto. Den I have some wettew wwiting to do, some tewephonic cawws to make, a twip to book, and a whowe wot of whatnot.

Aftew aww that, I’ww then be on my way to Mw. Gwant Geissman’s home enviwonment, whewe I’ww spend a few houws watching as he begins the book design of Muwdew At Howwywood High. I’m weawwy wooking fowwawd to that, I must say.

Tomowwow is yet anothew wacky day – a meeting wif Chawwes Fox, a weheawsaw wif Miss Wyan, and then, hopefuwwy, a smaww dinnew and then the watching of some DVDs.

Now wait just a dawned minute. Wet's put on ouw pointy pawty hats and ouw cowowed tights and pantawoons, wet's bweak out the cheese swices and the ham chunks, wet's dance the Howa and the Monkey, fow today is the actuaw biwthday of ouw vewy own actuaw Ciwwawiz. So, wet's give a big haineshisway.com biwthday cheew to ouw vewy own actuaw Ciwwawiz. On the count of thwee - one, two, thwee: A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIWDDAY CHEEW TO OUW VEWY OWN ACTUAW CIWWAWIZ!!!

Weww, deaw weadews, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, fow exampwe, weheawse, do ewwands and whatnot, and then design a book. Today’s topic of discussion: What awe youw aww-time favowite pawty games – the ones that awe weawwy fun and funny and wacky, and the ones that awe just intewwectuawwy stimuwating? Wet’s have woads of wovewy postings, shaww we, as the waning takes ovew fwom the waxing.

From today's New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/12/us/12parking.html?th&emc=th):

Quote
In Houston, $225,000 will buy a three-bedroom house with a game room, den, in-ground pool and hot tub.

In Manhattan, it will buy a parking space. No windows, no view. No walls.

Title: Re:WAXING AND WANING
Post by: Ben on July 12, 2007, 04:55:22 AM
I also love a game of Initials.

There are variations but the way we play is

You take the alphabet and write it vertically down the side of a piece of paper and then pick a sentence at random. I chose Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their party. You put the first 26 letters of the sentence next to the alphabet as so (you can see that the last letter used is the t in to):

AN Aaron Neville
BO Bobby Orr (the hockey player) and so on
CW
DI
ES
FT
GH
HE
IT
JI J
KM
LE
MF
NO
OR
PA
QL
RL
SG
TO
UO
VD
WM
XE
YN
ZT

You then have 10 minutes to come up with names for the sets of initials. As in Celebrity, the name has to have some level of fame and the person can be real or fictional including cartoon characters, advertising icons (Pillsbury Doughboy would be acceptable for PD), etc. For K, Q and P King, Queen and Prince or Princess are acceptable. Scoring is as follows

If you get a name and someone else gets the same name you get 5 points. If you get a name and no one else gets it but other players get different names (AW could have Andy Warhol, Andy Williams, Anna Mae Wong, etc) you each get 10 points. If you get a name for a set of initials and no one else gets a name at all you get 15 points. You can only have one name for each set of initials.

Good morning, all!  The question about Mr Jerry Hadley once again seems to be, is he or isn't he?  According to Ron Raines, he is, but there's nothing from the media to prove it. Oy!  So, back to the Spirtas charts.

I awoke this morning to Christianne Noll's "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" running through my head sd I'm listening to JEEPERS CREEPERS,  BK, I am so jealous of your evening! Since Jason changes ever-lovin's like others change underwear, is this the landscaper(???) I met in London in 2001? I miss the old rep company a lot.

In the latest edition of Forbidden Broadway, the Company parody is apparently very effective.

Good morning all you Dear Readers out there in the dark.

Do any of you know if a documentary is available called This is Noel Coward? It was done for ITV in Britain in 1972 or 1973. There is a coffee table book companion to the film. We found the book at a Library book sale on the Upper West Side. I just finished reading it and really enjoyed it. I would like to see the film if possible. Almost all my googgling turns up is refererence to the book. There are a couple of databases which mention the film but it doesn't seem to exist in DVD or VHS.

BTW, Mr. Oz, thanks for the hardware. H & B are here.

I don't know about that one. I did tape one from A & E that was taken from a Thames TV series like our American show BIOGRAPHY that was done years after his death. This one includes clips from interviews and a few shots from TOGETHER WITH MUSIC.

As for the Brain auditions on the 17th - which I think are the EPAs - well, I haven't been contacted (yet), so 'tis not I.  -Although, everyone seems to be getting last-minute "emergency" calls for pianists lately.  I've talked to a couple of my colleagues over the past couple of days, and we've all been getting a couple of "Oh, I need someone tomorrow morning at 9:30" calls (at 10:00 at night), or "My pianist just told me he can't stay for the afternoon session..." calls.  In any case, I'm not on for the 17th.  *And, actually, I believe I'm heading back down to Virginia next week for a few days, so I won't be available.

bk - So glad to hear that you and Sal and Liz and Jason and "other" ;) had such a good time last night.  Have they moved out there?  Or are they now a bi-coastal family?

And I can't imagine how big their boys are now.  When Liz and Sal did Sunday in the Park with George at Arena Stage back in 1997, Alessandro was practically a newborn, just six months old or so.  And sometimes Alex would stay in Liz's dressing room during the show.  It was always great to visit during the "obituary" scene at the top of Act 2.

I'm looking forward to Gypsy. I'm gonna have to drag my butt uptown and see what's left at the Ticket Office (We don't sell boxes, we sell tickets - a phrase from my Theatre Management college professor).

It's selling well, not great.  However, I believe the big "surprise" to the folks at City Center is that most people seem to be buying the better, more expensive seats for this production.  The Rear Mezz and Gallery have practically been empty so far, while the Orchestra and Grand Tier have been almost sold out the past few days.  -There were only about 40-50 people upstairs in the Front Gallery with me last night.  They've also been sending blocks of tickets over to TKTS throughout the day so far.  We'll have to see if that trend continues after the reviews come out.

I love how Victor Borge used to sit down at the piano, turn to half the audience, and say, "Pardon my back!"

Then, he'd turn to the other half of the audience and say, "Pardon my front!"

The choreographer from the movie HAIRSPRAY was a judge on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE last night...Adam something....and he was shut down a couple of times by Nigel....  But he did tend to go on and on and break into other people's time.

I'm curious how many are still watching So You Think You Can Dance. I just love this show. I think it gets better as we get to know the dancers.

Interesting that nigel mentioned a petition to bring back jessie. I don't really love her. But i totally agree. That whole point of the show is for the judges to only vote out who america puts in the B3. I think it is totally unfair what the judges did last week.

Oh and re: last night's episode of So You Think You Can Dance.

It sort of bugs me that some dancers get much better choreography.  I mean all the dancers are good. So the better choreography can really make a difference.

I absolutely loved Sabra and dominic. They had my favorite choreography. I just loved loved love it. I also really liked danny and anya. I love their dancing. And i thought their choreography was very good.

I liked jamie (waltz). But it did not suit hok (who i usually love).

I'm not sure what i thought of lauren and neil. I really like him. But am not as crazy about her. But the choreography was very good.

Also not sure if i like pasha and sara together. The judges loved it. But i didn't.

I am also not that crazy about shauna. Although she has been pretty good lately. But i thought that cedric was really good last night. I was surprised considering the style.

It will be very interesting to see who america puts in the bottom 3. I think they love hok. But on performance he should probably be up.

Also i wonder when they change partners. It seems like they have stayed together too long. And these partnerships can also really affect voting!

Naw, I think it was more the feeling of being a bit overwhelmed with all the new cases and trying to learn all this new stuff so quickly. I know I've studied and studied, but with real people it still feels a bit like trial by fire.   Anyway, I had a great appointment with a client seeking asylum from persecution in an African country.   I think I'm absolutely going to love this work.

I will miss the show tonight....since it is OPENING NIGHT for A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM.....but I will check the results in the morning.

The choreographer from the movie HAIRSPRAY was a judge on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE last night...Adam something....and he was shut down a couple of times by Nigel....  But he did tend to go on and on and break into other people's time.

And Mary's back tracking on the Cedric trainwreck was very disappointing.

My favorite couple again last night Lacey and ???  darn, I forget his name.

Ah, i wrote my post before seeing yours.

Lacey's partner is kameron. Wow i'm surprised that they are your favorites.

There is something about them i'm not crazy about. I figured most people were voting for them because she's benji's sister.

I was actually happy with what mary said. Cedric might not have been the best last night. But he was totally different than how he has been. He really seemed improved.

Btw, i thought it was a bit weird for them to have a judge not from the show. I don't remember them doing that in past years. But i guess they started it with debbie allen. It's interesting i guess to get a new perspective. And to at least get judges who watch the show.

First time I'd ever seen a yellow bird in my little postage stamp backyard (I mostly get ducks, robins, blackbirds, and cardinals. Thursday greetings!  "Broken weather" seems to be an epidemic - it hit here in SW Ohio last night, too.  It was so-o-o-o nice to turn off the AC, open the windows, and hear the birds singing this morning.

As I was reading today's column notes, it was bad enough with the Elmer Fudd references, but then when I saw dear Cilla's name "translated" I started to laugh out loud, and then tried to stifle laughing, and then that just made it worse!

There are very puzzled looking people sitting near and across from me, and they are looking very afraid.  :)

They just boarded the whole group of people that were waiting here in the airport...... and the announcement was  "we need to board the flight to Baltimore in a very quick manner, as our captain tells us that if we can't take off in 15 minutes, then you will all be stranded here in Indianapolis, due to a bad weather front in Baltimore."

I was somewhat disappointed A THOUSAND SPENDID SUNS was not as beautifully, poetically written as THE KITE RUNNER, but then to me few books are.  Nor was the story as heart wrenching, which some might consider a good thing.  Both books capture the plight of the Afghanistan people, told with completely different stories.

It isn’t fair to expect brilliance every time. So, on its own merits I found the book riveting, obviously since I didn’t put it down until six this morning.

Ginny, it would make a good discussion book.

In light of our discussion earlier, I thought this entry from wikipedia was interesting:

In Ancient Rome, the Vestal Virgins (sacerdos Vestalis), were the virgin holy priestesses of Vesta, the goddess of the hearth. Their primary task was to maintain the sacred fire of Vesta. The Vestal duty brought great honor and afforded greater privileges to women who served in that role. They were the only female priests within the Roman religious system.

I'm surprised he uses the Post Awful at all. With UPS your packages are tracked even if sent ground and their rates are in line with the USPS for all but the lightest of letters. No CDs - what else is new?  I now have the number of the plant and I'm on the phone with them now.  They'll be finished in thirty minutes, I've just been told.  They're now trying to get hold on the CD lady so she can pick them up and get them to me.  Naturally, she isn't answering her cell phone.  I told them if they haven't gotten in touch with her in thirty minutes, that I'll come and get them - they're in Burbank, and it's a pain in the ASS, but I'll do it.

I really have to make a decision re Barry Pearl as The Brain.  I'm very tempted to do it, but I'm just in a weird position because I a) don't know who in NY might be available to us, and b) whether we're rethinking the Brain head - if we use what we did, I don't know any leading actors who would care to be in a Brain head the whole show, whereas Barry totally "gets" the gig and its requirments.  I know he'd sing it well, and I know he's funny.

I brought car in from its 60,000 mile matainence (actually 55,000 miles) so I can some hours to kill and I went to the 9:30am showing of Harry Potter and _________(whatever it was called) Besides myself there was one other person in theater.

The film is a lot darker than some of the other. It is definitly not a bright, cheery uplighting story. I have not read the book so I cannot tell you what was left out.

I enjoyed it for what is was 2.5 hr time filler while my car was being worked on.

Thanks, DR Michael. All of the books/movies from here on out are supposed to be dark. Lord Valdemort has returned, and it's now a fight to the death.

Lots has obviously been left out. HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX is the longest of the books and has the shortest running time of any of the films yet produced.

I had time this afternoon to watch three programs. I began with MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST. It was a funny show this week as Kathy hosts the Gay Porn Awards, has a blind date with a poker champion (a total pig), and then entertains at both women's and men's prisons. The prison sequences which were the last half of the show were funny but also quite touching as we see many inmates who are learning skills like auto repair and culinary management that they'll be able to apply once they're released. Kathy seemed moved by the experience of meeting some of these criminals making an hoest effort to turn their lives around.

I ended the afternoon finishing the last episode on disc 4 in the MURDER SHE WROTE set. It's another Jessica-less episode, this one centered on the faked suicide of a shrewish wife by what appeared to be her philandering husband. So, for most of the episode, it was COLUMBO-style as we thought we knew the killer and watched the detective track him down. A little wrench was thrown in at the last minute (didn't really ring very true.) Pat Hingle and Ron Leibman were the two most famous guest stars.

Yes, there is an occasional loss or damage of a package, but nowhere near as prevalent as the USPS.

I've had a different experience--for me, the USPS is the most reliable, and UPS had caused me to want to strangle someone there a number of times. I've also had several packages seriously damaged by them.

The only problems I've had with USPS is occasionally I will get someone else's mail, but then I take it to them.

American goldfinches would be native to Virginia. There are probably more around than you would know about. Look at your local Petsmart for a feeder with tiny holes that would dispense niger (or thistle) seed. Or look for a little sack with niger seed. If you put out the feeder, you will probably see a dozen or so, as soon as they find it.

The finch feeder would be a long skinny tube with a yellow cap.

Time Warner, ladies and gentlemen - for the last two weeks the service has had so many glitches it's laughable.  I finally called them yesterday, when the service went down, and they, as always, have to blame everything but themselves.  While I was talking, the service came back on and I got off the call.  Today it's happened three times in row in the space of fifteen minutes.  I called, was on hold for eight minutes, then the call disconnected.  I called again, and the call disconnected almost immediately, but not before having to listen to all that interminable voice mail crap.  I'm afraid they are not going to like me when I finally get through.

Time Warner is sending out a technician to check the modem box and the line that's coming into the house.  Of course, nothing on their end is wrong, only how can I have perfectly good signal niney percent of the time, and then this other ten percent have it just stop and then come back on its own, without me resetting anything.  My fear, of course, is that they'll give me a "new" cable modem that won't work at all, as happened to a friend of mine.

Woody, you know Jason Graae too?
Not that well.  We've only encountered each other once.

It was during BK's recording of Graae's An Evening of Self-Indulgence: Live at the Cinegrill.  Der B and I had arrived at what we thought would be an early enough time, but the only seats left were practically right on stage, to the left of the playing area.  It was more than kinda neat, being that close in.

Well, it's time for the encore, and he's singing "What More Can I Say" from Falsettoes, and he's seated on the other side of the stage... and there's no way he can not look at us, simply because of how the chair he's sitting in is facing.  And der B and I are holding hands.

Comes the applause after the number, Jason comes over to us and thanks us and says something about seeing us holding hands.  I think.  The applause was so loud that I couldn't make out a word of what he was saying.  Maybe he was cursing us out for not applauding enough during the evening.  Personally, I'd like to think the former.

And that's my Jason Graae story.

DR TCB - Business for Grey Gardens has been relatively good, but not great.  Even after the Tony nominations, they did not get that much of a bump at the box office.  And I know that January and February were very slow for them.  However, with Mary Louise Wilson leaving the show on July 29th, it was only sort of natural that the show would close then too.  -Even though it's a "Tony winner", it's still a hard sell at the box office.

I also had to spend a bit of time at City Center today.  No, I did not see Gypsy again today - although I was very tempted too since they still had a slew of tickets left for tonight's Opening.  Instead, I was at City Center trying to find someone who could help me locate my business card holder that I left in the theatre last night.  I had called this morning, and nothing had been turned into the Lost & Found, but they also told me that the Theatre Manager and the House Manager weren't in yet, and any L&F items may still be in their offices.  So, around 3:00, I headed back over to City Center to see if I could go ahead and get back into the theatre, and check for myself.  Well...

I went to the Box Office... Where I was then directed to go to the Stage Door Security Desk... Where I was then asked to sign in and go up to the 9th Floor Administration Offices...  Where a most helpful executive assistant, Alex, tried to locate the on-duty Theatre Manager...  Well, after she had called around a few places, she then called back down to the security desk, and was told that I could just be escorted into the theatre and go check my seat location from last night.  Well...

Once I got back down to the desk, the security guard started to walk me in, but as soon as we got buzzed into the backstage area, her supervisor came in after us and said that since a rehearsal was going on, the theatre was closed.  So, we headed back to the security desk... Where some of the staff were arguing back and forth about what someone had said earlier in the day regarding access to the loading dock.  This went on and on for a few minutes.  "So, what should I do now?" I asked.  -Well, let me try to reach the Theatre Manager.  At that point the other supervisor spoke up again, and told the guard to try her cell phone.  -She's not here right now, but her cell phone number is right there.  So... What does the security guard do?  He gets on the intercom and walkie-talkie system asking for the Theatre Manager. :-\

After a couple of repeated pages - and some more arguing about the use of the loading dock - the security guard calls down to his supervisor who informs him again to call the Theatre Manager on her cell phone.  So... The security guard tries the cell phone... No answer.  Tries again... No answer...  Then more arguing with the other guard about the loading dock...

"Um.. Excuse me, so what should I do now?"  -Well, just write down your info here on this piece of paper, and we'll have someone get back to you later.  OK...

Then I asked what time would the House Manager be in tonight... -7:30.  "But, the show is at 6:30 tonight."  -Oh, you're right.  Well, I guess 6:00-ish then.  So...

I make my way back around to the Box Office, and ask the friendly gentleman behind the window what time the House Manager would be in.  -She'll be in at 6:00 for the 6:30 show.   OK - although, 6:00 seems a little late for me for a 6:30 curtain, and an Opening Night to boot.

So, since I had a few errands to run around midtown, I took care of those, and then head back to the City Center around 5:45.   I ask if the House Manager is available... -Not until 6:00.  Hmm... OK.  Then I start noticing various ushers and assistants walking in and out of the lobby doors, and I just eventually walk in and ask where the House Manager is.. -Right over there.

I explain my situation to her, and she says that once the theatre is open, that it would be OK to run upstairs and look for myself.  Well... The opened the doors at 6:00, but the theatre proper did not open until 6:15.

And to bring this somewhat shaggy dog story to a close, I did not find my business card holder.  And, yes, I'm a little bummed about it.  I've actually had it for a couple of years, and it was really "cool", and just perfect for my needs.  Of course, besides my business cards and some cards from other people, I used to keep my MetroCard for the subway, and, of course, I had just bought a new one yesterday for the week.  -And, of course, you can't request a credit for a One Week MetroCard, only 30-day one.  In any case...

Maybe I'll get a call from the lost and found office tomorrow telling me they found it, and that I can go pick it up.  Or I may just head down to Tumi or Macy's or Sak's or Business Card Cases 'R' Us and buy a new one.  However, I really do like the one I had/lost.  And since I bought it in Richmond, and since I'm heading down there next week, well...  We'll see.  *Although, I do have to admit that I already did check at Sak's and the MoMA Design Store... And the Tumi store was already closed by the time I went by there.

Basta!

As for USPS vs. UPS...  As I've stated before, I've always had good service - luck - with the USPS.  Yes, there have been occasional glitches, but what business doesn't from time to time.  And UPS rates lately have gone up so much, that they're really not a practical alternative anymore.

No worries.  I just figured after all the inept people I had dealt with, and the frustration, that I was just bound to find my credit card case.  I'm just glad that I did not put some "mad cash" or my ID in there like I sometimes do.  Then I definitely would have been in a panic.

DR Laura:

Quotes from 3D:

Sell shares in the production here!  Everyone who contributes gets their money back and a name in the program...

Hey, if you're serious, I'll put my money where my mouth is. 500 people contribute $100 each via paypal...guaranteed to get it back via paypal at show's close?

$50 or $100, depending on how many people contribute.

Response from BK:

Well,  500 people would net us 50K - so how about 50 people at 100 per?

Tell you what - before we get anyone to actually do it - how about everyone who's interested can send me an e-mail at kritzerland@aol.com and if we get fifty folks, I'll give the go-ahead.  Then, when the box-office receipts are distributed to us (usually takes a month or two from what I understand), then dough is returned via paypal.  I like it!

They practically steal the show!  Alison Fraser - who supped at Joe Allen once with bk and a couple of DRs - Marilyn Caskey and Nancy Opel really make the number their own.  And Marty Pakledinaz's costumes are a "gimmick" in themselves.

DR singdaw - A friend of mine who is a trucker, swears by his cellphone modem.  Yes, it's not always the fastest connection, but it basically works anywhere he is, and he managed to get a great deal on a data plan.  He uses Sprint.  Sprint used to sell a separate data kit for their phones, but I think some of them now are equipped with a USB hook-up.

Today's Note's Title reminded me of TENDERLOIN, and to my amazement, there is actually a discussion of "Artificial Flowers" over on a Broadway chat site - discussing the pros and cons of Bobby Darin's brilliant (IMHO) cover of that Bock/Harnick song.  To be honest, if I had to start a list of my favorite Darin songs (and arrangements) I think that "Artificial Flowers" would place second, behind "Beyond the Sea."

As for postal rates... Well, all things considered, paying $0.42 to have a letter delivered from Point A to Point B - and Point A could be Key West, FL, and Point B could Honolulu, HI - is still quite the bargain.  Heck, even $8.95 for the large Flat Rate Priority Mail Box isn't bad at all for occasional shipping.  Yes, I know any sort of postal rate increase will always affect businesses more than individuals, but in comparison to how much it would cost to deliver that on your own, using your own vehicle and fuel, well...  It's all about perspective.  -And remember, in terms of today's delivery times, the Pony Express was never really that "express".

The day of DR 3-D's brilliant plan for Brain shares, I wanted to be part of the action and requested a share (I can't remember the day nor the post number -- but it's in the archives somewhere, I promise).

So put the Murphys down for a share BK --  what does that take you to?

And speaking of flutes...

It wasn't until a few years ago that someone pointed out to me just how out of tune the flute solo is in the song "California Dreaming"  Consequently, everytime I hear that song, all I can hear is the flute solo, and it's ain't pretty at all.  It's actually almost painful to listen to.  However, before I "noticed" it, I didn't really notice it.

No, it's definitely sharp, but guess what?  It's because it's been "processed" (as some wise man once said).  Believe it or don't, that's legendary session flautist Bud Shank--he did his solo in two octaves and they double-tracked them, giving it that weird out of tune flavor.  You can hear producer Lou Adler talking about it if you download the file on:

http://www.npr.org/programs/morning/features/patc/californiadreamin/index.html

which, as you may have guessed, is a whole feature on the creation of the song.

Here's another question, for any legal beagles out there.

Composer Alexander Courage wrote the theme music to Star Trek. Gene Roddenberry wrote lyrics to that music....supposedly so that he could get half of the royalties from it.

But, there are no lyrics when the music is played on the show... so why should he get royalties from it. Shouldn't he only get royalties if someone actually recorded music and lyrics together and tried to sell that?

One my way home I was listening to a homemade collection of songs on my cd player and the song playing as I got home was MY HEART IS SO FULL OF YOU sung by Liz Callaway and orchestrations by Mr. Larry Moore.

Absoluting breath taking in its scope and beauty. The musical bridge is gorgeous Alex Ryback's piano playing is stupendous. The simplicity of the violin &  flute (?) compliments the piano playing. It is one of my favorite pieces of music that Mr. Moore has orchestrated.

Bruce Kimmel producing and Vinnie Cirilli's engineering make it perfection. In my over 8 thousand songs on my system hard to believe that Liz Callaway's recordings (THe other is her live cabaret perfromance with her sister) are the only ones I have other than cast recordings.

I just had to say it (write it) If you have a chance to listen to it please do.

Everyone at their finest.

There is also Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, Bonanza (although it was sung by the cast at end of pilot and never use again) That Girl's first few season theme was sans lyrics. I am sure they all got some kind of royalities

I've had a different experience--for me, the USPS is the most reliable, and UPS had caused me to want to strangle someone there a number of times. I've also had several packages seriously damaged by them.

The only problems I've had with USPS is occasionally I will get someone else's mail, but then I take it to them.

I've had problems with USPS, UPS, and FEDEX. Packages never delivered, lied to, damage--all exasperating. (And I'm usually a pretty patient person.) As for receiving someone else's mail, it happens all the time in my neigborhood. Yes, I take it to them or give it back to the mail carrier, but I often wonder whether I receive all of mine that's been misdelivered. I once received a letter that had been opened--and since it contained a check it was rather disconcerting.

Just found this!!!!

Footlight Closing (July 18th)- see below for details:

To one and all:

It is with deep regret that I must inform you that we will be closing on July 18th. It has been a difficult decision, but there seems to be no choice. The company was going into debt by keeping the store open. Our rent went from $2500.00 to $5000.00 then to $7000.00 and the landlord wanted to raise it again the following year. This was a dream I had since I was a kid, to own a record store. If I had closed the store sooner and not incurred such a debt then maybe we could have continued as a web-based company. . .

Even that is doubtful in today’s market. Downloading is affecting us more and more plus you have the fact that many smaller companies that produce Cast Recordings pre-sell their recordings at a discount price. This has probably cut into about 40% of our sales in cast CDs.

Last of all many of you may not realize that even though I have a direct account with companies like Sony Music I do not pay the same price as Amazon. Amazon’s cost is much less than I have to pay, so how can I compete with this unfair practice.

Most of all I would like to thank all of you that have been our regular customers and stuck by us even when you could have saved a dollar going some where else. We will miss the communications that we have had with our customers, many of you for dozens of years.

The site will be up and running through July 18th you may still order through it till the 19th. Our e-mail address sales@footlight.com will be functioning till then. After that you will be able to reach us at the same phone number 718 963 0750 (the phone number will be valid through the 18th of July) or through our old e-mail address: footlight1@aol.com. We will still be here working for weeks after the site is closed in case you have questions about your orders.

You will be able to find the balance of our stock on Amazon under the name Footlight-com.

All the best to each and every one of you now and in the future,

Ron, Arnold, Dave, Richard, Steve, & Will

You have to have a co-publishing agreement.  It's not necessarily 50/50.  In the case of the Star Trek Theme, Roddenberry may have insisted on a 50/50 split to approve Courage's theme.  Sometimes, however, when a lyric is added to a previously instrumental piece, the lyricist gets much less than a 50/50 split.

Lots of viewing happened tonight. I guess I was getting it out of my system since I won't be home tomorrow night at all. Some friends and I are venturing up to Winston-Salem to see the local production of THE FULL MONTY tomorrow night.

I'll be on in the morning but possibly not again until Saturday afternoon.

I began with a MURDER SHE WROTE episode, another JESSICA-less concoction. This was another with Keith Michell as Dennis Stanton, former jewel thief and now insurance company investigator. Also in the guest cast were Ken Swofford and Shirley Knight.

Next I watched the screener I received this afternoon for the upcoming British release CASHBACK. It's a charming tale of a young artist getting over a devastating break-up by taking a job in an all-night supermarket. There he meets a kooky congregation of workers one of whom helps him get over his love blues.

SInce he's an artist, he sees the world often in still life rather than motion, so those moments, and his fixation on the nude female form, propel much of the action.

I liked it. It had charm and the director had a unique way of illustrating what went on in the artist's mind, a somewhat different kind of take on Walter Mitty-like daydreams.

Another MURDER SHE WROTE followed, and finally one with Jessica as a primary part of the story. This one had a once-mentally disturbed brother coming back to town for his sister's wedding only to have a similar murder happen again, similar to one that sent him to an institution the first time.

Big guest star cast: Shirley Jones, Doris Roberts, Robert Walker, Jr., Barbara Babcock, among others.

Thank you all once again for the Birthday greetings.  I have had a nice day and a nice week, actually. Although I didn't plan to do it, I ended up spending one on one time with a number of friends this week, lunch with a former colleague, lunch with a friend I haven't seen for a while and tonight drinks with my friend whose son was killed.  We had been doing one of those "Let's get together" sort of things for a long time, but not doing it. I called today and when she heard it was my birthday, we met.  It was really nice to actually be able to talk one on one with people I like.

Hmm... Now I'm kind of confused/weirded out.  I could have sworn that the flute solo was really out of tune, but now that I've listened to it a few more times over the past hour -  :-X - it doesn't sound as bad as I thought it did, well, as I remembered it sounding.  Maybe I'm used to it now.  ;)

Oh yes, I remember spoons...

WE also had quarters, a drinking game.

Charade, Pictionary/ Win Lose or Draw, Taboo, Pit, Twister (a local variation of the board game), limbo, Karaoke, Scene it! and Trivial Pursuit.

Some of the outside party games we did were

They've been advertising this heavily on HDNet Movies.  It's evidently going to be broadcast for one night there before its general theatrical release.

Like I said, it's definitely out of tune--but I think it's owing more to the overdubbing, hence bizarre overtone ratios, than to his actual playing.  Bud Shank was a master (I think actually he's still alive and living in good old Pt. Townsend, WA, where he has a jazz festival every summer).  Plus, obviously, his solo has some flatted 5ths that are supposed to sound "blue."

I just listened to it. I'm a flute player...well I started college as a flute performance major, anyway, it doesn't sound too bad to me, there are some bent tones, intentionally, and it is the low register, which is harder to play.....are you sure the guitar is totally in tune?   ;)

He's also playing with his tone, it's breathier in some places. I used to love doing jazz flute stuff with flutter tongue etc. He's not doing that here, but I don't think all the effects are overdubbing, although I've been wrong a time or two

To think that two future Bond gals would be sharing screen time with Scarlet O'Hara/Blanche DuBois as well as BROADWAY MELODY's Bessie Love and BRIDE OF FRANKENSTIEN's Ernest Thesiger!

It wasn't until a few years ago that someone pointed out to me just how out of tune the flute solo is in the song "California Dreaming"

That has always bugged me, as has the out of tune flute in the original M*A*S*H theme song. (I think they fixed it in later versions.)

And I think the Saint instrument is a piccolo, but I bet DR Elmore would know for sure!

Not as familiar with James Bond...

My DH was alarmed when he heard the instrumental CASINO ROYALE theme and I started singing lyrics to it---"Have no fear, Bond is here", etc.

He didn't believe that there were actual lyrics to this and thought I was making them up.

I went to see Ian McLagen (keyboard player for the Small Faces/Faces) tonight at a local club. There were two opening acts; one was a Yardbirds cover band, quite good.

A friend of mine from high school sat in with the band. He's a great guitarist, formerly with the Georgia Satellites, but his humble origins included practicing in my mom's basement with my high school boyfriend's band.

Boy, my mom was a good sport.

It was nice to catch up with him, even though a lot of the talk consisted of remembering another friend of ours that I mentioned a few weeks ago, who passed on unexpectedly, and other rock and roll stories that would probably only be of interest to Tomovoz and Rodz.

George, I woke up to a very warm bed room....I decided it just wouldn't do and although it's cool outside, the open windows weren't doing squat, so I cranked the air conditioner and it's feeling much better. Maybe I can get some sleep

I am really thinking about getting a portable air conditioner...or seeing if I can be allowed to make my skylight in my loft bedroom an openable skylight.  All of the condos in this complex have the exact same kind of skylights, except some are square and some are half-sized rectangles.  When I was looking at places to buy, one of the other units in this complex had a square skylight (like mine) that could crank open!  I hope that that's a possibility because otherwise, there really isn't any easy way to get rid of the hot air up there. :P

I really liked this episode.  It was very touching to see that these people wanted to make their lives better.
