Well, you've read the notes, the notes were scary, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently wearing weird masks and are carrying harmful-looking implements and at least one of them is named Jason Graae.
-
And the word of the day is: EUPEPTIC!
-
Oy vey...what a way to start a Friday the 13th... I just checked the mail that my roommate left out in the living room and found a notice from the NY State Tax Dept. that my 2006 taxes had still not been paid. While I am fairly certain that I did send in a payment, I have no check or money order stub to prove I did so, which leads me to believe that I had a total brain fart and forgot to send the payment in. That's my fault. Unfortunately, it means I had to pay out $280 when I thought that matter had already been taken care of. I just made a phone call and made a payment, making sure to write down every single bit of information possible so I don't have this problem again.
Not a pleasant surprise, I can tell you...
-
Eeek! I spy a Jason! But I don't think he bears any harmful implements. At least, not outwardly.
-
DR Jason...that's a bummer! At least we know that if we get into trouble, there are expert tax accountants and attorneys here at HHW to lend a hand... ;)
-
Well, there shouldn't be any trouble now. Not legally, anyway. The trouble in my bank account is another matter...I wasn't really prepared to pay that amount "again..."
-
That's the title of my next novella...
The Trouble in My Bank Account...

LOL DR Jack. I have a DVD of a Connick concert from a couple of years back. Charisma he has not. Totally dull.
I would have loathed the Pajama Game. Last year's performance at the Tony Awards would not have encouraged me to walk through the door.

PAGE TWO HUMOR
On the first day of school, the children brought gifts for their teacher.
The florist's son brought the teacher a bouquet of flowers.
The candy-store owner's daughter gave the teacher a pretty box of candy.
Then the liquor-store owner's son brought up a big, heavy box.
The teacher lifted it up and noticed that it was leaking a little bit. She touched a drop of the liquid with her finger and tasted it.
"Is it wine?" she guessed.
"No," the boy replied. She tasted another drop and asked, " Champagne ?.
"No," said the little boy. . . "It's a puppy!"

I shall refrain from giving a reply and a reason TCB!
My comment was in direct response to today's notes.

Good morning, all! I have little to report. The work on the charts continues, the lease is still in negotiation, and I'm seeing HARRY POTTER with my beloved goddaughter tonight. We had two choices of theatre: the huge Lincoln Center complex at 68th Street and the local theatre at 84th Street. Charlotte preferred the 7:30 show at 68th and it was indeed sold out, so we're seeing it at 7:00 at 84th. You need a chart for all the logistics.

Do tell!
Well, last weekend, I did go out and purchase a brand-spankin' new 80 GB iPod. But once I got home, I started feeling weird about the expense. So I started doing a little online research and found a site that sold iPod hard drives. So for just $100 (plus another $5 for the toolkit), I purchased a new drive and it's now sitting here on my desk. I am going to attempt to install it into my iPod today. If this delicate operation works, I'll be happy as a clam and I have saved about $200 bucks (once I return the new iPod, that is.)

Last night I completed watching the First Season set of what is now one of my very favorite television shows of all time: SLINGS & ARROWS. I had been reading the praises heaped upon this show for some time now by DR Elmore and other HHW'ers and I finally ordered the set last month and began watching it Monday night. OMGYG--it is so wonderful! It's funny and sexy and moving and best of all it reminded me of all the things that I ever loved about acting and theatre. I found myself overcome with laughter and joy and tears during the final two episodes I watched last night. I absolutely hated it to end.
I've already ordered Seasons 2 and 3. I can't wait for their arrival!
My eternal thanks to all you HHW'ers out there who made me aware of SLINGS & ARROWS!

Because I'm leaving this afternoon for a one night's stay in Winston-Salem while attending a production of THE FULL MONTY, I had to get that $&^*^$#$%^%$ kitchen floor mopped early, but now it's done with, and I can relax. I still plan to head out around 11:30 to do my usual Friday errands, but otherwise, we're leaving around 4 this afternoon. I should be back tomorrow in the early afternoon.

Just a reminder that PSYCH and MONK return for their new seasons tonight. MONK is at 9 and PSYCH at 10, just like last season. I'll have to set the DVR to pick them up since I won't be here to watch them "live."

Doubtful, but, to quote the kid in Angels in the Outfield, "It could happen!"

I haven't read the article but I have already changed my home pages on IE 7 and Firefox from the news pages I usually read to blank Google pages. They will stay that way until I finish Harry Potter. I remember being furious at one of the news services during the last season of Six Feet Under because I hadn't yet seen a particular episode and the headline gave away a crucial plot point. This was before the episode had even been broadcast. I also had trouble with Sopranos spoilers from a couple of months ago. That's when I decided to go to blank Google pages.

I watch for the one or two decent episodes that somehow sneak their way into the rest of the season. Last season, I thnk there were two I thought were okay.
PSYCH is so delightful that I'm already chuckling in anticipation of it.

DR Ben - :)
The article does not give away any plot spoilers. It basically echoes DR Dan (the Man)'s comments from a few weeks ago...your best bet is to buy the book and read it immediately, cutting yourself off from all media until you have finished!
-
I just realized the other day that the day the new Harry Potter book is released, July 21st, is a Saturday. Which means that I will not get my hands on my long ago ordered copy from Amazon until the following Monday, since it will be delivered to my office. I could spring for another copy to be delivered to home, but I doubt that there is any guarantee that it will arrive on that day anyway. Arrrrgh!!!
-
I got some actual customer service from DirecTV yesterday--they're upgrading to something like 70 HD channels and needed to do a dish upgrade. A guy came out first thing yesterday morning and installed the new dish with no hassles (and no charge). The good thing is I get some of my local HD broadcast channels now right off the dish (instead of off air) and the reception is much better. No more pixellated Losts. ;)

Edi, re: Casino Royale. Not sure if you meant Bacharach's music was substandard, but the inimitable (not) lyric was by Hal David, of course. But, as BK insisted about The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, "It was a big hit." (I tease because I love). ;D
I think David's lyric for Casino ranks right up there with his stellar (???) work on Baby Elephant Walk with Henry Mancini.
-
I have joined the throng and pre-ordered a copy of HP from Barnes & Noble. I have a $50 gift card from my office which I got for recording the new voice mail messages here. I plan on using that to purchase the book. I'm excited to read it and I'll pick it up early Saturday (not at Midnight) and read, read, read, although that's not the way I wanted to read it. I certainly would have started right away but I wanted to savor the book. Now I feel if I don't read it all by Sunday morning I risk having plot points ruined. The excitement has gotten a bit out of hand, IMHO.
-
My strategy is to go to my local Stop & Shop [grocery store] very early that Saturday morning. No lines and no kids. :) That's how I've purchased the last two volumes.
-
I think the Potter excitement is actually fantastic. Imagine people getting so worked up over READING! Anything that does that is good, I think. Of course, in the Bible Belt, we do have letters to the editor almost daily now proclaiming its very evil nature of brainwashing kids by forcing magic, witches, and wizards on them.
I'm sure the publishing industry has its eyes wide open for the next Harry Potter-type phenomenon to come along.
-
That's a good idea, DR Singdaw. The book will be sold everywhere. I could probably pick up a copy at the CVS around the corner from me.
-
Heading down now to clean up a bit so I can run my errands. I'll try to log back on briefly this afternoon before heading out.

I really liked last night's show. I"m not sure i totally agreed with who america put in the B3. But i definitely agreed with who went home last night.
I don't get why danny and anya have been in the B3 two weeks in a row. I think they are absolutely breathtaking.
I really think that the choregraphy saved pasha/sara and neil/lauren from being in the bottom.
I was a bit surprised that hok and jamie were in the bottom. I thought they were very popular. But i suppose their dance was one of the weaker ones.
I never really liked shauna. I did like cedric. But not as much as hok and danny (both of whom i really love).
I was happy they saved jamie. She has always been great. Plus i love anya. So it had to be shauna.
And even though cedric was good this week. I think danny and hok are better. It is sort of ironic that he goes on the week when he was really surprising. But what can you do.
I don't really like lauren or sara. I think either of them would have gone if they had been up.

I hope you all realize that by buying books at discounted rates, the author's royalties are impacted? You should all pay full-price! ;D
Actually - it is the small chains/mom and pop bookstores (if there are any left) that are suffering here. Because the large chains are able to offer these discounts, the smaller ones have to as well, and so they're not making any money on these tremendous sales.

Mr. Time Warner Man hasn't arrived yet. I told the gal who booked the appointment to put me first on the list (they start at nine) because I leave at 11:30 sharp for Mr. Charles Fox' house. Glad you liked it, Dan (the Man). I enjoy it quite a lot, too. My local video store, which specializes in cult and classic films, bought the first season, but it didn't do well. Rather sophisticated humor, I'd say. Perhaps best for those of us who have been in theatre or films. Does anyone know someone who really enjoys it but is also more mainstream? (Just curious.)

Oh, my, the schedulers for Time Warner bring a whole new level to the word incompetent. They are most likely not even in California (or wherever you call from if you're unlucky enough to have Time-Warner as your provider). I know some people have no problem with Time-Warner but if it went belly up tomorrow I would cheer. I think Time-Warner is one of the most incompetent, badly run companies in the U.S. Although Comcast is bigger, TW has a monopoly in many cities and they provide excreable customer service. I loathe and despise that company like no other I have to deal with. It's one of the reasons I don't have high speed Internet service at home because I don't want more Time-Warner equipment in my home.

Car CD has FSM sdtk of Jerome Moross HUCKLEBERY FINN: I just finished FACE THE MUSIC and in the batters box is a bay city special(one more footlights order)Classical Hollwood Vol II(title?)with pieces by Von Korngold and Moross among others.

I am back for a few quick minutes. It's clouding up and we may be driving the 70 miles to Winston-Salem in the rain. Argh!

I think i'm blogging in the wrong place. Look elsewhere for my thoughts on Jason Graaepronounced Grah. My favorite boy singer. DVD has SHAUN OF THE DEAD and car cd has FSM release of Jerome Moross sdtk for HUCKLEBERRY FINN

I started out my viewing by finishing THE GAY DIVORCEE which I started last night. I had not remembered much about the ending, so I was delighted to see it again.
-
Next, I saw that I had two MURDER SHE WROTE episodes left in the 6th season set, so I watched both of them.
The first was a Cabot Cove mystery but Jessica was visiting in England, so he was only in the story for a couple of brief scenes talking to them on the telephone. Of course, she solves the case long distance, but we don't hear her resolution. It's relayed by Sheriff Metzger.
Guest stars included Elinor Donahue, Michael Horton, and David Warner.
-
And the final episode of season 6 was, believe it or not, another Jessica-less episode. I am VERY surprised that CBS chose to end the season with Jessica basically off camera.
Anyway, this was one of Michael Haggerty's espionage cases, so there was very little mystery (a couple of surprise revelations instead), and overall one of the weakest episodes in the history of the series. Joining Len Cariou as a guest star was Ian Ogilvy.
-
I got two DVDs in the mail today from Beuna Vista, one an IMAX film on Mars and the other a title called RENAISSANCE starring Daniel Craig which looks like animation of some kind. I'll start with them when I get back in town tomorrow.
-
I am way behind. I have not even read the first Harry Potter book.
Neither have I. ::)
But I have seen the movies.

Comcast has done that in the past, also. But...you don't have HHW as your homepage?? I do and I've never been spoiled by spoliers! ;D

singdaw - Milla was very touched by your comment about her CD winging its way to you.

Media Check:
In my DVD player: nothing
On my DVR: a whole bunch of shows that I haven't had time to watch because of "Taming of the Shrew," but "Psych" is set up to be recorded tonight!
In my CD player at work: on BK's recommendation, "Bill Evans Trio With Symphony Orchestra." It arrived just yesterday! AND a direct connection to ME is that Chuck Israels (http://www.chuckisraels.com/) plays bass in the trio on the recording and he was the jazz choir director at Western Washington University when I was there (acutally, reading his long bio on his website, he's still the Director of Jazz Studies at WWU)...and I was in the jazz choir! I knew him! ;D I haven't seen him since then, but we in the jazz choir got to know him and his wife and his daughter.

Remember that scene in THE BIRDS where an actress slaps Tippi Hedren and says this started when you came here.Ii Think you 're EVIL<EVIL; That's how I feel about COMCAST(in Washtenaw County, SE Mich; next weekday off I'll have to waste time on the phone again trying to get a 7.5 hr deduction for the most recent time the cable was out I'd be willing to give Jack A O L Time-warner a try..

Thanks, DR Singdaw. Having seen the original in NYC, I'll be curious to see how well a local company handles it.
-
Yes, I have to say that I've had no major beefs with Time-Warner here in Charlotte. Yes, they do have a monopoly on cable service, but I've only had good dealings with customer service, and I'm pleased with what I get for what I pay.
I do understand that it is not like this everywhere, and I don't blame folks balking at lousy service when it's the only game in town.
-
Now, I need to close up shop here and get ready to leave. Hope everyone has a good rest of Friday, and I'll be back tomorrow.
Bye for now!
-
Hi everyone, I've had quite a crazy day today. I've been watching a friend's dog, a high strung pekingese. She had advised me not to bring her to work, but the dog has been depressed and mooning and she's been chasing Killbot around the house. So I brought her to work and she ended up biting a kid- just a nip that barely broke the skin. It freaked me out more than the kid and we followed protocol to have him examined by nursing and he's fine but it really shook me up. I brought the dog home and now I'm just trying to unwind. We're watching Monday's episode of The Closer and catching up on paperwork.
-
Comcast is the same everywhere, I see.
DR MATTH we will expect a full MONTY report, of course.
-
I also want to say that we recently switched our cable to the DVR recorder and it has changed my life. I love being able to set it to record a whole series.
-
The DVR is my favorite invention.
-
Paula Dean just described herself as the kind of person who can take fattening food and make it even more fattening. I like that thought. :)
-
Comcast is all that we have here, cablewise, and other then their removing American LIfe Network from the line-up I have always liked them...in fact in another week or so I will (finally) have Comcast high-speed internet (instead of dial-up) and I am switching my land line phone to them (which has free long distance) and then I can reduce my cell phone bill to the 3 hours a month plan.
-
I am sorry to report that there is nothing in the mailroom for me today.
I spoke with the head of our office facilities, and he told me that the real problem lies with the building's mailroom. Anything that is delivered to the building by USPS is dumped off there. Not only do they take their good old time sorting the USPS mail and packages to the different building tenants, they often send them to the wrong tenants. Complaints seem to go nowhere.
-

Hate to tell you this, TPunk, but it's not the most relaxing episode of the season!
-

I do to! The problem is that it gets filled up so quickly and I can't burn something directly to a DVD...I have to record shows to a VCR if I want to keep them. :-\

Oh...
Good afternoon!
"Cassie Dance" rehearsal went very well. Fun and thrilling, in fact. :)
-
And after rehearsal I went ahead and headed to the Tumi Store to check out their business card holders, and, lo and behold, their whole line of wallets and related accessories were/are on SALE! And the sale prices were so good that I ended up buying one of each style they carry. So, now I have two Tumi business card holders - and they even match my wallet! I guess I can alternate them on odd and even days. ;)

DR Dan (the Man) - So, is your resurrected iPod still covered under the warranty? ;)
-
Oh, my, the schedulers for Time Warner bring a whole new level to the word incompetent.
Such a glowing recommendation! I tried two ISPs before I found my present one, and loathed them equally. What is it with ISPs? My guess:
trying to service too many customers with too little equipment due to cost-savings, and hiring the cheapest people they can get to do support.
Anyone have any other views?

Re Miss, Collins, I know now the title of a movie from, i'd guess, the late 50's with Miss Collins and Richard Burton. It's the one called SEA WIFE: I came in 15 minutes late(on cable) so it took me a while to figure it out, but I enjoyed it very, very, much
-
Well... As for ISPs, whatever we have here at the apartment - and I think it's Verizon DSL - seems to work fine.
However, I do remember having quite good and fast(!) service with Comcast when I lived in Richmond. Things were usually taken care of that day or the next. In fact, they frequently advertised "same day service" for most of their services. *And they also tended to have cute service technicians too. ;)
Now, when I tried to set up cable service for my temporary apartment in DC last August, I was told by Comcast there that it would take a minimum of two weeks before anyone could come out to get the wires wired. Of course, they were running a special on installation and service at that time, so they had quite a backlog to get through. Consequently, when it came down to picking a window of time to have someone come over, they preferred that I give them three 12-hour windows. What? So... Since I managed to pick up the local stations just fine with the TV antenna, I remained cable-TV-free during my time in DC.
-
I have Comcast for cable (no other choice).
I have terrible luck with them as far as service calls, and lodged 3 or 4 complaints because of their ineptitude.
The last time I had a service call, I scheduled it for first thing in the morning, thinking I would be able to get it over with and have the rest of the day. It's so rare for me to have a weekeday off that I could have gotten so much done.
At about noon, I called. "He's on his way".
At 3PM I called again. "He's on his way."
At 5PM they realized that the technician didn't had the proper cable box for HD and would have to reschedule for another day.
It took several more tries, with them cancelling appointments without telling me, before we got everything working.
I dread when we move and I have to hook everything up again, but that will be one of the few donwsides.

It is an exciting day around here. Mae-Ling and Wae-Ling came to Vacation Bible School today, and they will be visiting with us at our home until Mr. Goldstein gets home from work.
Wae-Ling made "hot worms" out of playdough while Mae-Ling drew hearts with markers, and now I am listening to an exciting reading of The Little Engine That Could, ready by DS.

Well, I'm all booked for my trips to and from Richmond next week courtesy of my Amtrak Guest Rewards points. Alas, it's early trains both days (Monday and Friday), but they're also the fastest/shortest trips time-wise. -And that also leaves me with options later in the day should there be service issues.

DR DearReaderLaura - So, what makes "hot worms" hot?

I've had pretty good service and service calls from Comcast. The only real trouble was when I first got high speed Internet service when I was living with my sister. They came out and set it up and it worked, but then a week later, it all just stopped...no access, no nothing. But the TV still worked, so that was okay. It took them a while to realize that someone forgot to check a box somewhere and once that was found, everything worked just peachily. :) And pretty much has ever since then.

DR JoseSPiano...how is it to play the dance section of Music and the Mirror? It sure must help to have a drummer there. I haven't looked at the score in a long time, but I would think that music doesn't really translate well to a piano reduction, rendering it awkward to play...

I prefer to think of Gere in "Grease" and Sorvino in "The Baker's Wife"

Woo-hoo!
And in honor of DR Tomovoz, we can play Blood Brothers in the background.

I like "Humming to Myself". However... I saw her in concert twice before that album came out. -And, boy, did it take a long time for that album to come out. Alas, when I finally got the album, I was sort of disappointed to find that some of the songs she previewed in her concerts were not on the album. ??? But I still like the album, although, one or two more uptempos would have been nice.

DR Dan (the Man) - So, is your resurrected iPod still covered under the warranty? ;)
Once you open up your iPod on your own, not only is your warrentry void--you're forever on Apple's sh*t list.
-
Glad you liked it, Dan (the Man).
I never thought of myself as mainstream, in fact I always considered myself a theater person, but I didn't enjoy SLINGS & ARROWS.... and I love Paul Gross
-
I never thought of myself as mainstream
I hate to break it to you, DR TCB...but...
Neither did we! ;)

DR JoseSPiano...how is it to play the dance section of Music and the Mirror? It sure must help to have a drummer there. I haven't looked at the score in a long time, but I would think that music doesn't really translate well to a piano reduction, rendering it awkward to play...
It's actually not that bad to play without a drummer. The original piano/vocal reduction is actually quite well written and gratifying to play. However, there are those two sections which are so drum set and timpani dependent, that having a drummer in rehearsal helps a lot. (I think Baayork refers to one of those sections as "the Chita Rivera" ;) )However, I've made do by just playing chords with the appropriate rhythm and accents. However...
The "new" version of "Music and the Mirror" is written out a little differently, plus there have been some adjustments made to the arrangement - and the vocal is a half-step lower for Charlotte. I'm still getting used to it, since the original is so "in my fingers". However, it looks like come July 24th, it looks like the vocal will be put back in the original key at least twice a week, if you get my drift. We ran that "option" today, and it was nice to feel "at home" again.
*And one my fondest cast party memories was improvising a four-hand versions of "Music and the Mirror" with a friend of mine. I played most of the main stuff, and he filled in with the instrumental cues. Very cool.
-
...However, the drummer is brought in primarily to aid the dancer(s). And in the process, it makes the pianist's job a little easier.
-
DtM's ipod death distresses me...I want to get an IPod, but don't want to go through all the trouble of downloading tons of music onto it only to have it die someday.

Yes. Tomovoz did and Ron did and Swishy Sarah did.

My gosh, DR TCB! You know all the poop on everybody!

Oh no dear Naomi ... you are one that must never change your screenname. After all, it is a great mind exercise to figure out exactly how to alter "SpringDroop" every day.
Oh no my lovely, Singdaw/Naomi it is, and must stay.

Hi dear Naomi.....I was checking today at the post office, and I'm afraid that I may have screwed up big time when I sent a little package to you, and also one to DR Rodzinski .
I hadn't seen that the "media mail" rate had gone up recently, and I put the old amount of postage on the boxes. So.... I may get them back (I hope), or you may get them delivered with some additional postage due.
I apologize for being so unseemly! Man, talk about a stingy date!! He makes you pay your own postage!

DR MusicGuy...
Not to worry. I would never besmirch you in any way.

Of course, saying "pasrticular" makes me feel like a doofus.

Yes. Tomovoz did and Ron did and Swishy Sarah did.
And JRand changes his screen name every year on his birthday. ::)
-
Has anyone ever changed screen names here at HHW?
Actually, you can change your screenname here on HHW without affecting your post-count. DR JRand "updates" his name every August 26. Your "Username" can not be changed, however, the Name you choose to display on screen can be changed.

Well, the show runs two more weeks, so... Just sayin'.

And JRand changes his screen name every year on his birthday. ::)
That's true; I had forgotten! But he obviously does so without losing his tenure, or seniority, if you will...

And thanks to all for the congrats on my revived iPod. As much as I've dug into the insides of PCs and VCRs and such, I was pretty shakey when opening up and switching the drives on the iPod. I'm feeling pretty happy about this DYI project.

If I can get this damn kite to fly
You mean you Magnus and Fosca are no longer running inside that "hamster wheel"?

I was thinking it!!!
-
Thanks, DR JoseSPiano. Perhaps I'm a geek, but I find this stuff fascinating.
Well, if you want to talk about being a geek... As I started playing off the "old" version of "Music and the Mirror" today, I would consult the new one to make sure that I incorporated parts of the new arrangement. And I also usually do vice versa too.
*And since I was fortunate enough to learn the show under the original pianist and musical supervisor, I also still consult that marked up - and in some cases, corrected(!) - copy of the score I used then from time to time.
-
It's an age thing. They are both 84 now DR Jose. Colin refuses to use the wheel and he is so much younger then they.
Can 'roo do be used as fuel?

Whew! Now I remember why I had children when I was young!

Can 'roo do be used as fuel?
I've not been as close up to the substance as have some DR Jose!

Now we just have to get through the program for tonight for the parents, and we'll be done for a year!

-To this we've come.
Or should that be: -To this we've dung.

A few days agoI did almost have Ben's DP Ant. believing our record player turntables turned anticlockwise.

LOL DR Jose. Indeed I remember it well. (A Gigi reference)

And DR Jose Jose Jose did get up close to see a Joey Joey Joey. He was a most happy fellow.

Hmm... So, it's 7:00pm, and I turn to Food Network to watch "Good Eats", but much to my surprise, "Emeril Live" is on right now?!?!?!? When did that happen?!?!?!?
Good Eats is on at 10:00 Central. They are re-running 2001. Last night or was it the night before was fried chicken. Tonight is butter
-
...And I believe a downpour is about to begin here in Upstate Manhattan.
-
Has anyone ever changed screen names here at HHW?
Won't JRand56 be changing his name (and avatar) in about a month or so?
-
...And, of course, we just ordered Chinese food for delivery.
-

It comes on here at 10:00 Central too - 11:00 Eastern Standard. And it indeed will be cooking with butter at 11:00/10:00. At 8:00/7:00 it was corned beef.
-
Oh, I see others have already mentioned JRand. Serves me right for not reading all teh notes before posting!
-
From time to time I think of bk's favorite Ruth Chris' steak fried in butter and try to imagine what it must taste like.
I've been surfing the net trying to find a recipe for jalapeno and grapefruit caramel ice cream topping. I think our guy must have just made it up.

For those wondering, Tom from OZ became Tomovoz on the suggestion of truant DR WFO

Well, after you've finely chopped and seeded some jalapenos, and juiced your grapefruit, you put some sugar in a pan...

Although, knowing how citrus juices don't always cook well, I'm guessing he probably made a standard caramel sauce, and then thinned it out with some grapefruit juice and added some diced jalapeno.
Hmm... Now I want that trio of sorbets they serve at Zaytinya in DC: blood orange, black walnut and olive oil(!). Sooooo good.

...and you are kind enough to indulge me.

Well, I'm off to the theater for our last Friday night performance! We have tonight, tomorrow night and Sunday matinee...then we're done with "Taming of the Shrew...in Hell!" Have a good evening, all!

DR George-If your sky light works fine, no leaks or anything, I wouldn’t touch it, mess with it & it might leak. Just my words of caution. And what if it rains?
Sleep well tonight.

Arrrrgh!!!
I thought books could only be shipped the same day the books go on sale in the stores, no sooner.
-
We had a difficult discussion to make today, see 1408 or Harry Potter. After all the raves about 1408 we decided HP could wait. ;)
-
Well... I guess it would be interesting to hear another take on "1408". :-\
-
Hmmm... Ollie's was good tonight. Wontons in Hot Sesame Sauce, and Roast Pork Bang Mein. YUM! And I have enough leftover for lunch tomorrow.
-

Actually, I think DR George does not have a skylight, but was thinking of putting one in.
I think.

Hmm... So one of the roomies - yes, the "loud" one - is hosting a birthday gathering for herself here at the apartment on Sunday. She had a Fresh Direct order come in today. Eight big boxes. And she apparently has some more groceries being delivered tomorrow. Right now, the refrigerator and freezer are now full(!). And her beef - hamburgers and skirt steak - is due in tomorrow. Hmm...
When I asked her earlier how many people she was expecting, she said, "Oh, about 50." But I thought I detected a hint of "joke" in her tone. However, after looking at all the food that is currently sitting in the fridge, on the counters and on the floor, I'm beginning to suspect that maybe she wasn't joking. -And with at least two dozen freshly ground hamburger patties due in, and a couple of pounds of skirt steak (she's going to do a chimichurri), well...
Of course, while she was unpacking her groceries today, she "reminded" me, that, "Oh, you know you're invited too, and that you can bring anyone you want." -And I think the other two roomies were invited in the same way. Well...
Now I'm wondering two things...
1) Whether or not I should go see a show Sunday night after playing A Chorus Line that afternoon.
and
2) Whether or not to "remind" her that the propane tank for the gas grill was not completely full when we got it last summer, and that since we've used it a couple of times already over the past few weeks... But I guess she should take care of that herself since it's her party. Or she'll just find out on her own how full the tank is. Or is not.
-
Oh... I forgot to mention the five pounds of potato salad, the five pounds of fruit salad, and the four dozen Hebrew National hotdogs.
And this from the woman who never seems to have any money. ???
-
I'd certainly leave the discovery of the tank situation to her. As with all of us she will blame Jose anyway.
-
Of course, saying "pasrticular" makes me feel like a doofus.
I thought "pasrticular" was a fun variation. But that's just me. ;)
-
...And the really "sad" part about all of this is that we - myself and the other two roomies - would be more than happy to help out with the party. I mean, how she's gonna prepare food for 50(?) in our relatively small kitchen, and have it all prepped and staged by 2:00 on Sunday afternoon is a total mystery to me. -Although, I guess that's why she sprung for the pre-chopped fruit and veggies, and pre-made salads.
But to be fair, she did ask me how long I thought her skirt steak should marinate. And I did help stash the three big bags of potato chips, the three bags of tortilla chips, the two cases of beer, the four bags of hot dog buns, etc., etc., etc...
:-\
So, I guess it's fair to say that I'll probably be seeing a show or going to a movie Sunday night. -And God help here if when I get home, and the kitchen is not cleaned up.
Of course, they're also predicting thunderstorms for Sunday afternoon.
-
I'd certainly leave the discovery of the tank situation to her.
No, remind her! Might make her feel guilty/grateful...
-
I'd certainly leave the discovery of the tank situation to her. As with all of us she will blame Jose anyway.
Hmm... Although, I guess I could always check the tank for her later. Well, I could check it a few times... open the valve... close the valve... open the valve... close the valve... ;)
-
Ain't passive-agressiveness fun!
-
...And one other roommate is working all day Sunday, and the other one is also planning on being "occupied" that day.
However...
We'll all get over it eventually. We always do.
-
love it Jose.
-
Remind me never to cross you or Elmore!
-
DR Ben-I never thought about removing my google page, thanks for the suggestion. I want to focus on the ride, not on rushing through it so someone doesn’t spoil it for me, which in a way has already happened.
As usual, we went with friends to the big theater with Stadium Seating to see THE ORDER OF THE PHEONIX. Since their granddaughter is visiting, of course she joined us, they will be attending the HP Midnight Madness at our local bookstore. Good for me as they will collect my pre-paid book so I don’t have to drive all the way into town in the morning, just a few minutes to their house.
-
Hate to tell you this, TPunk, but it's not the most relaxing episode of the season!
She might not relax but she will definitely stop thinking about the dog incident.
TPunk, I'm glad the child was ok.
-
I've had quite a wonderful day. I finished two charts, then Josh Grisetti stopped by to visit and we talked about reasons for the cancellation of THE KNIGHTS OF PROSPERITY: fascinating dish. He's been in hold with the sitcom for the past six months, lost a lead in another sitcom as well as a role in GREASE on Broadway because of the KNIGHTS situation.
After that, HARRY POTTER with Charlotte. What a good movie! We really enjoyed it.
Now I'm watching PSYCH: tonight they're doing in AMERICAN YODEL: a very funny Paula Abdul impersonation, and I love Tim Curry. As for the two leads, they are getting gayer than Frasier and Niles Crane, gayer than Liberace reading Playgirl in a pink tutu on Rock Hudson's sofa. They're outrageously silly.
-
Don't encourage me, DR MBarnum. I might post photos!
Do! Do! :)
-
Remind me never to cross you or Elmore!
Well... As long as you supply me with some Freddo Frogs... :)
-
DR elmore - Wanna come to a cookout on Sunday? ;D
-
I never thought of myself as mainstream, in fact I always considered myself a theater person, but I didn't enjoy SLINGS & ARROWS.... and I love Paul Gross
I feel so much better now, we didn't enjoy it either. I was ok with it, Keith didn't care for it at all.
I still like Paul Gross :)
-
Well... As long as you supply me with some Freddo Frogs... :)
It was less complicated to deliver them than send them. I'll check!
-
And thanks to all for the congrats on my revived iPod. As much as I've dug into the insides of PCs and VCRs and such, I was pretty shakey when opening up and switching the drives on the iPod. I'm feeling pretty happy about this DYI project.
You should be-congrats!

And speaking of chocolate...

After that, HARRY POTTER with Charlotte. What a good movie! We really enjoyed it.
So did we. It was nice to see Daniel Radcliffe grow as an actor.

Violet Crumble is/was very much a local candy here. It was produced by Hoadley who were taken over by Nestlé not that long ago. I think people of my generation see "Crunchie" as a second choice.

I see Crunchie as a second choice too.
-And I still remember being very pleasantly surprised to find Violet Crumble bars in the 7-11s in Los Angeles.
-
Although, I do remember being advised by a clerk at Tea & Sympathy that if I wanted something close to a Violet Crumble, that I should just unwrap a Crunchie bar and leave it out overnight. ;)

Oohhh, spooky .. I login and it's Friday the 13th, Page 13 and Jason is the most recent post ---- *screeeeeam!*

I've never seen a Friday 13th movie nor the other similar series. The names of the characters neverthless are part of our "culture".
I was going to add that I didn't really have to scream right then in my other post because I'm not the buxomly teen babysitter making out with the teen boyfriend in the living room while the children sleep, so I know I won't be the first one to go .... right, Jason? ... Jason? ...
*sreeeeeeeam!*

Don't forget to send some of that chocolate to Miss Karen.
and don't forget to keep them out of DR FJL's chocolate-nabbin' mitts or I'll never see 'em ...

-
That is a most excellent idea, DR Cillaliz.
-
Jose, if the tank really needs to be filled, why don't you tell her and then hurry off somewhere so she has to get it filled. Then when you need it next, there will be propane
Well, if it does run out on Sunday - and, who knows, maybe it won't run out on Sunday - then it would be easy enough to get it refilled since there's a place just up the block when I would need it. And since I'm really not too keen on grilling anyway, well...
Again, I'm just being passive-aggressive about the whole thing right now. However, the game of Skip-Bo we're playing right now seems to be easy something of the animosity.
-
I have survived.
-
-And there's still just something "entertaining" about the prospect of the grill just "stopping" just as she puts the five pounds of skirt steak on it.
-
Miss Karen - What did I miss? Jason is calling asking if you've checked on Cason lately? This is so confusing!
-
-And since I'm playing both shows of ACL on Saturday and the matinee on Sunday, I really won't be here anyway.
-
Got my propane
Got my methane
All I need now is the grill
Got my hot dog
Got my sliced hog
Got the biscuits and Triscuits from Nabisco
Now all I need's a flame and some Crisco
-
Again, I'm just being passive-aggressive about the whole thing right now.
Sounds like you're having a Big Spoon moment.

Ooo, the suspense is killing me:
My library has 98 copies of the new Harry Potter audiobook (CD) on order and I'm #116 on the waiting list.
So, will I have my copy before DH Richard and I leave for our drive to Wisconsin on July 29?
Doubtful, but, to quote the kid in Angels in the Outfield, "It could happen!"
Where are you going in Wisconsin Ginny?
If things permit, DBF and I will be in STevens Point.
-
Friday the 13th proved to be entertaining at work today....
One of the nasties got their comeuppance after some of the faculty got ticked off with what they were doing to the new library books by placing the barcodes over the titles and the stamp sticker over the title page and other related pages.
I sat at my desk and watched quietly as I quietly cheered the three profs raising the ruckus. God, I may be hearing impaired and where the exchange occured a good 35 ft from my desk. I could hear them! She got ripped and man I thank god that she finally got some comeuppance for she has had made everyone's lives literally miserable.
It made my day!
-
I hope you all realize that by buying books at discounted rates, the author's royalties are impacted? You should all pay full-price! ;D
Actually - it is the small chains/mom and pop bookstores (if there are any left) that are suffering here. Because the large chains are able to offer these discounts, the smaller ones have to as well, and so they're not making any money on these tremendous sales.
One discount store I will not shop at and that is Walmart. I do not approve of their business practices or the way they treat people with disabilities up here.
I am stuck with Barnes and Noble, Target, KMart, ZandBroz and a couple of other smaller stores.
-
Glad you arrived home safely MrMusicGuy!

Did not know until I was looking something up, the 10th Doctor, David Tennant was in a Harry Potter movie.

Craig, Iowa, goes nuts
Testicle festival challenges stomachs with the other, other white meat
By WEEKENDER STAFF | 07.12.07
“Put what in my mouth?” is something that will probably be overheard Saturday in Craig, Iowa, a Plymouth County town of 89 residents.
What began as a joke at the local bar has grown into a festival attracting up to 700 people to the town northwest of Le Mars, Iowa.
If you castrate it, people will come, as the residents of Craig have learned over the past six years at the annual Test Fest, short for Testicle Festival.
The Saturday event features a parade, a queen contest, softball tournament, hanging of Christmas decorations and n the biggie n a feed of the delicacy called Rocky Mountain oysters.
Wait … a Test Fest queen? Yep, and in 2006 the honor was bestowed upon Rhonda Grasz.
“It’s the biggest fundraiser for the city,” Grasz said. “It’s a lot of fun.”
As reigning queen, Grasz will lead the three- to four-block parade at 5:30 p.m., sporting the Test Fest tiara and sash. She’ll then circle back to crown the new queen and cheer her on as she rides regally through downtown Craig.
“The testicles are darn good,” said Karen Paulsen, a Craig resident.
“It’s a meaty taste,” added Kelly Plueger. “I’ve had them for years. I grew up on a farm.”
“I’ve been here five years and I’ve never tried them,” said Bailey Otto. “I’m way too shy.”
The meal follows the parade, which follows the softball tournament. A street dance wraps up the celebration.
But before calling the folks in Craig crazy, it’s wise to know that testicle festivals are not all that uncommon.
Rocky Mountain oysters, prairie oysters, Montana tendergroin or swinging sirloin are all culinary names given to bull testicles. It’s a well-known novelty dish in parts of the American west and the Canadian prairies where cattle ranching dominates. The dish in most commonly served at festivals, such as the many that are held annually in Montana and Phoenix, Ariz. Eagle, Idaho, claims to have the “World’s Largest Rocky Mountain Oyster Feed” during its Eagle Fun Days festival in June.
Craig’s all-volunteer festival collects donations which fund a variety of projects throughout town. Test Fest funds, for example, paid for supplies to Sheetrock and insulate the interior of the Craig shelterhouse. Test Fest proceeds helped pay for new playground equipment, bought lumber for renovated picnic tables and allowed residents to buy new Christmas decorations.
“We hung the Christmas decorations on the street lights last year during our Test Fest, so people could see how we were using the money,” DeBoom said.
What does the future hold for the Test Fest? DeBoom said the committee would like to build a massive city grill for the 2008 festival, a unique Siouxland celebration that seems to be growing year by year.
So, how does one become
Test Fest royalty?
“Three guys got this whole thing started seven years ago, and they don’t want their names out,” said Rhonda Grasz, reigning Test Fest Queen. “They decide on that day who gets to be queen. Usually, it’s someone who helps out quite a bit.”
Grasz helps the testicle cause by storing donated calf fries in her freezer throughout the year. “Right now my freezer is full of them,” she said.
Added Connie DeBoom, one of the event organizers, “The Rocky Mountain oysters are saved by our local veterinarians. It started as a joke in the local bar.”
Grasz also helps prepare testicles for the feed, which runs from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The tasty morsels (or so we are told) mostly come from cattle, are thawed, breaded and fried. Organizers also roast four hogs for those who prefer more traditional fare. Craig residents make salads, too.
The details
What: Craig Test Fest
When: All day, Saturday, July 14. Testicle feed begins at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Downtown Craig, Iowa
Cost: Donations are accepted

what they were doing to the new library books by placing the barcodes over the titles
At my local Books-a-million, whoever it is who pastes the barcodes on books usually does it right over the book description on the back cover. Annoys me no end.
Another thing that annoys me is those books in which there is no book description - on the back cover or not. This usually takes place with those star authors like Clive Cussler, where I guess the publishers know that people will buy it even if they don't know what it's about (because it's always about the same thing. :)
-
Now if I could just find a Cherry Ripe bar somewhere...
I can bring you some from our Aussie bakery, as well as more Violet Crumble, next time I'm in NY.

Did not know until I was looking something up, the 10th Doctor, David Tennant was in a Harry Potter movie.
And I disliked him in it which is why I haven't bothered to watch the new Doctor Who...
-
Comcast is the same everywhere, I see.
To my knowledge i dont think comcast nor Time Warner are available in ND.
Rural ND and several of the cities are served my Midcontinent and they are very reasonable. My parents pay less for cable and internet than they do in Fargo and they get more channels.
-
I guess the publishers know that people will buy it even if they don't know what it's about (because it's always about the same thing. :)
A Robert Ludlum reference!

Ooooh, I thought they had to bite them off the bulls!
Apparently that's what Errol Flynn had to do on a cattle ranch in Australia...

Great news about DtM's ipod! I am glad it lives!

Hmm... Just looking at the new issue of "The Advocate", and there's a feature article on "out" Australian rugby player, Ian Roberts. It's a pretty good articles, and the accompanying photos are pretty nice too. :)

Flynn was probably never anywhere near cattle. He probably picked apples in Tasmania.

So THAT'S what Julie Andrews was singing about in Victor/Victoria!

Thanks for sharing, DR Cillaliz! The picture really capped things off, didn't it?!
-
I just came back from seeing EVAN ALMIGHTY. Although I love Steve Carrell, I wasn't expecting much, so I wasn't disappointed. But I wanted to see it because they filmed it in the teeny town where I used to live, Crozet, Virginia.
-
...and you are kind enough to indulge me.
Schmingdaw.... I like your name!
-
Thanks DR edisaurus. I'm sure that Cherry Ripe bars are available somewhere here in NYC. I probably just "forget" each time I look for them as soon as I see Crunchie, York, Malteasers, Flake, Aero, etc., etc., etc.
-
Thanks for sharing, DR Cillaliz! The picture really capped things off, didn't it?!
Especially with the Donations accepted line right above it. I'm actually thinking it would be fun to go. Not sure I could eat them, knowing what they are and all, but it may be real hoot to see the floats in the parade
-
I vaguely remember Tomovoz being Tom of Oz!
-
Time for this cowgirl to hit the hay. I plan to sleep in and then go to the office and get some organizing and work done over the weekend when the phone isn't ringing and people aren't expecting me to work miracles.
-
Aww.. I like Crozet, VA, too. They've hosted a couple of good festivals over the years, including their annual Arts & Crafts one, as well the Virginia Festival of the Book.
-

Yeah, but have they had a testicle festival? ;)

Sorry i just find the whole thing terribly amusing.

Time for this cowgirl to hit the hay.
Now, why didn't Craig Carnelia write a song about Cowgirls? Or Cowgrills?

-And I still remember being very pleasantly surprised to find Violet Crumble bars in the 7-11s in Los Angeles.
No 7-11s here...
However, we can find Lion bars, Gummie babies, Toblerone and Ritter sport at the local grocery store. There are also several more british bars we get but right now their name escapes me. Aero is one!
-
Well, when I took Song Literature, "cherry ripe" meant something totally different in those Thomas Campion songs I sang.
I'm sure I don't know what you mean... ::)
-
I have even tried Vegemite... not bad...
-
almost caught up....
-
I LOVE CHERRY RIPE! I was addicted to them when I lived in the Monica of Santa, but totally forgot about them. I believe I remember the store that carried them and I believe I'll be visiting them tomorrow.
-
We can get Yorkie bars in Fargo.
-
What a long, long day this was. I had some supper after rehearsal, then came home and watched a wonderful motion picture on DVD. Now I am relaxing at the keyboard, oh, yes, I am relaxing at the keyboard.
-
Without so much as a flick of the wrist - page fifteen.
-
It looks like you can buy Violet Crumbles online...$25.00 for 24 count. Hmm....

They are also called Prairie Oysters up here..... Oh yes, a group on campus serves them up as a fundraiser in the fall

There is a complete moron on one of those theater chatboards, already shilling for a NYMF show. He began last week by posting that he was excited that Donald McKayle was doing a show at NYMF, Roller Derby. I thought it suspicious, and tonight it was proven - he posted about three times today, first saying how excited he was that Donald McKayle was doing Roller Derby, then that again, and then, with complete hubris he posted "Does anyone know what Donald McKayle is up to these days?" I've answered him, and I will, I'm afraid, be there every time he posts to answer him with merriment and mirth and laughter and legs.
-
Cherry Ripe?? I am not familiar with them
-
We can get Yorkie bars in Fargo.
How about... I think they're called Pastiche? Pistachio nuts in chocolate....my favorite candy bar of all time. For two reasons. One they taste great, the other, brings back a lot of nostalgia as I first found them in London's West End, while waiting to see The Mousetrap.
Many years ago...even though it's still running!
-
FJL, what did you think of the Milla package? You got off the phone so fast I didn't ask - and what did she think? I think it's pretty classy, myself.
-
I've answered him, and I will, I'm afraid, be there every time he posts.
He doesn't know who he's dealing with!
-
then came home and watched a wonderful motion picture on DVD.
Oh, my wallet! The Page Turner is working its way to me through Amazon as we post...
-
Thanks DR edisaurus. I'm sure that Cherry Ripe bars are available somewhere here in NYC. I probably just "forget" each time I look for them as soon as I see Crunchie, York, Malteasers, Flake, Aero, etc., etc., etc.
I like Malteasers....
I am curious about Cherry Ripe. A gal on a soap board that is from oz sent me TimTams.... Very addictive!
You cannot eat just one of them!
-
They also sell Clotted Cream in fargo....
-
BK - You sounded tired, so I didn't want to keep you on the phone. I could have gabbed and gabbed about how great it looks. And boy, it sounds wonderful!
Milla was just beside herself with joy (not DR Noel's Joy, of course :) ) when I spoke to her. She hadn't listened to this final version when I spoke to her, but I'm sure she has by now. But it's too late to call her right now.

I will check when I go this weekend. The local grocery store is now offering more international fare....
If they offered TimTams I would be a very happy camper.
-
Singdaw, areyou in the NYC area?
-
Tom, do they have clotted cream in Oz?
-
Singdaw, areyou in the NYC area?
About a 30 minute train ride to the northern suburbs.
-
Going to try to get back to sleep now...
Smooches, kids!
-
In Connecticut?
-
Tired? Moi? I am beside myself with joy. Just what joy is doing here this time of night is anyone's guess.
-
Will we never get to page sixteen?
-
Pleasant dreams singdaw!
-
In Connecticut?
Westchester County, New York
-
I will single-handedly take us to page sixteen.
-
ahh.....
-
It has been quite the frenzy this evening...
-
Joie de Viv - my new book about the joy of being Viviian Vnace
-
Anyone remember Hires rootbeer?
-
I printed out a copy of the book in book format - it looks very nice. I proofed the first three pages and found a few things (just stuff from the book being reformatted, not additional spelling or grammar things). I suspect I'll find many more, and I've already found things that will add a page or two to the book.
-
Clotted cream is available but I don't think through supermarkets etc. I think there is some regulation that prohibits the sale. (Due to the "nature" of the product). I associate it with Clotted Cream Teas in England's West Country - Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Summerset.
Here they are "devonshire teas".
-
I meant Vivian Vance, of course.
-
I'm always amazed by how much shorter the actual book is from the manuscript, but this book especially seems about ten pages shorter than others I've done with the same manuscript page count.
-
So it is written, so it shall be done - page sixteen.
-
Will we never get to page seventeen?
-

Ahhh...
I was surprised to see it for British beef products are banned in the US, unless that has changed
-
Canadian beef was even banned for a bit in the US

Well, they also have them at Economy Candy (http://economycandy.com/) down in the East Village.
*Which was one of the first stops on the very first HHW Walking and Eating and Walking and Eating Tour.

Now I am really curious...
-
Clotted cream would be made locally Dakota. It is just not legal to be sold at retail here as it is unpasteurised. No way would anyone import it i should think! It is very high in fat content. (I think above 55%)
-
Tim-Tams are available at a small Australian-run internet cafe on 49th Street, just next to the O'Neill Theatre, where Spring Awakening is playing. I hear they're good...I haven't tried one.
DR Jose: They may also carry Aussie chocolates and candies...
And I'm starving right now...
-
Media update"
Jerry Hadley: Golden Days.
-
Jason, you have to try them. They are great!!!!

Oh, that's right. I keep forgetting about that place. There have also been a few Australian pubs and shops opening in NYC over the past year. There are two places in the West Village I keep meaning to try.

For those who are interested, there will be an Unseemly Trivia Contest question - but, as has been our wont, it will be in the posts, not the notes.
-
Tom, my friend Cassie was also surprised and suspects it might be some locals. My friend Cassie is originally from Dublin
-
Jason, TimTams come highly recommended by me.
-
As for clotted cream, I've actually made my own. It's quite easy. You basically heat cream for a long time over low heat, then chill it. Wonderful with berries and homemade scones.
-
Who came up with the names of some of these candies?!?!

I NEED a Cherry Ripe NOW.

I will have to try that...
I always like to try new things....
I want TimTams!

I could say something tacky about wanting a Big Hunky Big Cherry, but I'll refrain...

One time when my friend Maureen and I were in the Twin Cities to see the Chieftains, we stopped at Irish on Grand and got to meet Cecelia Ahern, who was doing a book signing at the store.
-
WE also get Ritter Sport in FArgo
-
Oddly, In FArgo there are more places to get Ritter Sport than Dark Chocolate M&M's.
-
Well, time for me to head to bed, I got a two show day tomorrow. And I think I'm back on Key 3, so I will really need my rest. ;)
Goodnight.
