No, I haven't finished the book yet. I refuse to be rushed through reading it, although I have removed myself (I hope) from obvious spoilers. My Home pages are blank Google shots and if a news story comes on, no matter what they are saying the sound either gets muted or the channel is changed. I don't trust anyone (which does take some of the fun out of it). Oh, well. I have the book and I'm happy.

Good morning, all!  I need new shoes.

This morning, I return to Toyland to continue packing up the place.  Our latest info is that the lease should be finished by tomorrow or the next day and we can move this weekend.  I will believe this, of course, when it happens, but -whatever occurs now - we have to be packed up for the movers.

Yesterday was quite a long day: After five hours of edits, I stood in line for forty minutes at the main post office to mail HARRY POTTER to Charlotte, only to learn that an overnight delivery  on Sunday, which cost $24.00 would not arrive until Tuesday. I think this is criminal, but I had no other options but to go with it.  While I was waiting, an older black gentleman keeled over, taking several of the current equivalent for velvet ropes with him.  I have no idea if it were the heat or the long standing in line. The emergency crew took about 15 minutes to arrive and they were tending to him when I left.  I got around 3:30, had to wait 30 minutes for a neighbor to use the laundry room, and I finished up my laundry about 6:30.  After that I watched the final three episodes of UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS Season 4.

TOD: the first major outdoor production I remember fondly is the original Public Theatre cast of PIRATES OF PENZANCE twice in Central Park.  The Broadway transfer was fun, but the production in the Park was the perfect end to a hot summer day.  The only thing I've enjoyed nearly as much was the revival two years ago of the musical TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA.  In this case, in which I saw the original production after it had moved to Broadway, the original cast was superior, but the revival was one of the better revisicals I've seen.

Monday morning greetings!  Today's my day off, too.  DH Richard and I will leave soon to take my car in for some routine service and to see if they can figure out why the slidey shade that's supposed to cover my sunroof won't close all the way.  Then we're going to Staples to get printer ink cartridges for my mother and me.  Then I'm coming home to answer some very important emails that I received this morning.  Then I'm going to have lunch with my retired librarian friend Becky, who I've not seen since before Thanksgiving.

54th & 9th is busy and, for midtown, not a bad area. I have a friend who lives at 52nd and 9th and loves the neighborhood. Hell's Kitchen is not the area it used to be. It's still kind of edgy but that's as you go farther west. If you have a potential residence location I think it's fine.

Sunday I actually went to a movie! I haven't paid money and walked into a movie theatre to watch a movie for a long time. I much prefer watching things at home. A friend wanted to see Hairspray so we went to the Union Square Regal Cinemas. I liked the movie. I was not sure how I would react because I like the stage musical but they won me over. One of the reasons is they treated the movie like an old musical. None of this bull about "you can't have people breaking into song and having people join in. All the musical numbers must take place in a person's head or have a reason for being" The movie opened with Good Morning Baltimore and Tracy started singing and dancing in her bedroom and walked to the bus stop singing and people joined in and it was great. The same with I Can Hear the Bells. The movie was a lot of fun. I do think the Travolta and Christopher Walken were the weakest parts (IMHO). Travolta wasn't bad but he didn't have the spark and I kept seeing JT in a fat suit. Walken, despite his chorus boy background, didn't work for me at all. One of my favorite numbers, You're Timeless to Me was OK but again, the spark of chemistry that lit up the stage with Fierstein and Latessa was sorely missing with Travolta and Walken.

I'm really glad I saw it. I thought it was a good transfer from stage to screen.

It's crawling with cops, as there's a precinct on 54th between 8th & 9th.  And one block up is the beautiful spanking new Alvin Ailey School of Dance.  And on that block, you'll find the Julia Miles Theatre, where, from September 28-October 6, you can see this show about the serious business of doing comedy on live TV in the 50's Such Good Friends   ;D

Surprised Pogue didn't chime in on this, but then Pogue hasn't chimed in on much for quite some time.

Fredric Brown was a fabulous writer of short stories and novels, both mysteries and sci-fi.  Very funny, too.  His first mystery, The Fabulous Clipjoint is a classic and, for B-film fans, his novel Screaming Mimi became a film with Anita Ekberg (and not too good a film - the novel is fun).  At one point, I had a complete collection of first editions, and during the nineties, Dennis McMillan, a private publisher, issued a huge number of limited editions containing the short stories and novellas.

Post by: Noel on July 23, 2007, 06:33:05 AM
The final scene of Such Good Friends underwent a whole heap of changes this weekend.  Before Friday’s auditions, it was necessary for me to commit to removing the two wives and two sons.  The list of parts agents submit their clients for, and actors look in BackStage for, had to match the script as it will be produced.  (As a Next Link selection in NYMF at the Julia Miles Theatre, opening September 28.)  So, I was under pressure from everybody to remove those four characters, leaving us with a cast of ten.

So, I could no longer do the ending stolen from Camelot; there would be no boy(s) to sing to.  That ending’s songs were a jingle (for an electric range), Be Funny, Tell a Danny Story, Things That Danny Did and a finale re-capping history everybody knew.

At the start of the weekend, there was still the ending stolen from Porgy and Bess, with the protagonist doing something admirable and foolish but obviously leading to disaster. That ending’s songs were a jingle (for a toaster: Make the Most of Your Toast), Be Funny, a new song called Too Happy To Be Singing the Blues and a finale consisting of Tell a Danny Story sandwiches between two reprised snippets.  I intended to add a choral number to the sequence, but merely wrote New Song Goes Here.

Saturday, I wrote the new chorale, and built a new ending around it.  I dubbed this version the dumb show..  The songs were Be Funny, the previously-cut Dottie Francis Theme Song, Too Happy To Be Singing the Blues (interrupted, a la Live Laugh Love) and the new chorale, which led into a brief reprise of something from Act One.  Sunday, I woke up very early, unable to sleep, anticipating how this new ending would go over with my director.  To bide the time before the meeting, I rewrote the overture.

On the bus ride to our meeting, I came up with an idea to use the back-to-the-start structure of Mademoiselle Colombe.  So, I had a backup ready if my director didn’t like the dumb show.  I did my best to sing the chorale as if I had eight different voices, and my director was very pleased.  End of story, right?  Well, we still had other ideas to pitch.  I reminded him about Mademoiselle Colombe and he reminded me of something that can only be described as a deus ex machina.  I realized that I had trouble sleeping because this beautiful chorale was too obvious to be good.  It was telling the audience something that had already been demonstrated through action, a cardinal sin too many musicals commit.

I said “The ending must show the protagonist has learned something.  It’s not about telling some message.  The audience can draw conclusions about a message later.  Right now it’s about the character’s redemption.”  In order to make that work, I need to use a little of that deus ex machina, and cut any song that appears to be the story’s moral.  So, Sunday night I wrote the most positive ending yet: Dottie Francis Theme Song, Too Happy To Be Singing the Blues in full 32-bar form (the verse got cut), and a reprise.  The two main characters end the show by walking off the stage together, having developed a new appreciation of each other, a la Gypsy.

I slept well.  Of course, the next time something disturbs my sleep I’ll change it again.

I just wrote a long post to JRand and Edi re:  Fredric Brown which got lost in the ethers.

Fred Brown is a well-known and revered writer of mysteries and well-regarded science fiction.  But I prefer his mysteries.  He won a Mystery Writers of America award for best first novel with THE FABULOUS CLIPJOINT.  This started a short but swell series with Ed and Ambrose Hunter (nephew and uncle) as detectives.  He also wrote SCREAMING MIMI, THE FAR CRY, THE LENIENT BEAST, and NIGHT OF THE JABBERWOCK among others.  All great stuff.  His original hardbacks go for upwards of $200 and paperback originals like THE CASE OF THE DANCING SANDWICHES bring a pretty penny.  I bought MADBALL several years ago for fifty and it now brings upwards of ninety in good condition.

Both BK and I are fans of Brown.  I have an extensive collection but not complete.  He's expensive and tough to find, but well worth the read.  A great writer.

So much for sleeping in on my day off.  I woke up at six, ready to vomit on the ground - have no idea why, but it happens occasionally these days - you know - don't mean to be gross, but with that awful taste in your mouth and a throat that feels like it's going to burn away.  It's finally calming down and I, of course, did not vomit on the ground or anywhere else.

The Old Globe in San Diego was always good for outdoor plays.  My favourite was probably a version of LONDON ASSURANCE I saw there once.  The Globe in London was a unique experience, especially as I stood as a groundling throughout...but the play was cack-- a version of THE TEMPEST with Vanessa Redgrave playing...wait for it...Prospero.  I've seen Vanessa on stage several times.  She can either be wonderful or just phoning it in.  Here she was god-awful.

There is a little group called The Independent Shakespeare Company that performs up in Barnsdall Park in Hollywood who is quite wonderful and Julieanne and I became real fans before we left.

The theatre group I'm with this summer did outdoor Shakespeare at a vineyard, Equus Run, a short distance from my house.  It was a something of a triumph and we'll be doing it next year, expanding to two plays.  It has a great ambience and vibe.  Shakespeare without body mics, very intimate.  The wine's not bad either.

TOD:

I have spend many a lovely summer evening at the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival.  They perform under a big tent on the grounds of Boscobel, a restoration of a Revolution-era residence on the banks of the Hudson River.  It is a breathtaking setting, directly across the river from the West Point campus.  You can bring a picnic supper and dine on the grounds overlooking the river, or purchase a catered gourmet meal.  The plays are streamlined and somewhat "tarted up" for broader appeal, but are usually still quite enjoyable.  Unless you get a really sultry humid evening, the whole experience is quite enjoyable.

Oh...I, too, loved the Public's production of TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA in Central Park. Loved it so much, in fact, that I saw it twice and then ran out to get the cast recording. I thought the cast was wonderful - especially Megan Lawrence, Norm Lewis and Elisa Renee Goldsberry (I think that's her name). Rosario Dawson was most definitely the weakest link that production...

TOD - Several years ago I took my mother, well into her 80's, to Kettering, Ohio's Fraze Pavillion (http://www.fraze.com) to see Keith Lockhart conduct the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra.  You see, Mother has a huge crush on KL, so we splurged on seats right up front.  When he came onstage, she said to me, "He has the bluest eyes!"  Fraze Pavillion is named for Ernie Fraze, the inventor of the pull-tab (like on a soft drink or beer can).

Also, for the past several summers the Ohio Humanities Council has put on a series of Chautauqua (http://www.ohiohumanities.org/chaut/index.htm) programs.  We weren't able to get to any of them this summer, but in other years we've enjoyed Johnny Appleseed, General Sherman, Zelda Fitzgerald, etc.

I do hope that DR Jason takes his camera to the Chik-Fil-A today.  :)

I wouldn't mind going to Chik-Fil-A myself today, but I have a feeling best friend John (with whom I'm having lunch) will opt for McDonalds. Not my favorite place, but he's let me choose the last three times, so he's due.

THE LOST COLONY is done on the North Carolina coast (at Manteo). On the other side of the state in the Smoky Mountains are two wonderful outdoor dramas: UNTO THESE HILLS and HORN IN THE WEST. I enjoyed seeing both of these when I was younger, but again, I haven't seen them in a long, long time. I assume they're still running in the summer.

bk - Definitely sounds like acid reflux to me.  Since you seem to be having recurring bouts of heart burn/acid reflux, I think you might want to see a doctor just to make sure everything is OK.  Or at least consult with a pharmacist - maybe a course of Zantac is what you need right now.  *And even though the meal you had yesterday sounded very yummilicious, it also sounded quite acid-producing-inducing.  And the "stress" of getting Joan's concert up and going probably didn't help matters either.

But, again, I'm not a doctor.  I just play one on TV.

I, too, concur with the acid reflux. I rarely have it myself, but a couple enzyme supplements will take care of it. You may be eating too many acid foods: meat, fish, and sugar are all acid. Alkaline foods are fruit and veg.

Of course, I know you will probably skip this post. :)

They originated in Atlanta, and my father-in-law was one of their first employees, when Truett Cathy owned The Dwarf House. They seem to treat their employees very well.

My DH does a lot of work for them. It's nice that they are off on Sundays---then the pagans crew can shoot in the stores.

Not for us--we saw The Illusionist first, but liked The Prestige better.  DS Betsy had to point out to me how the first few seconds of The Prestige pretty much "give everything away," though you have to see the whole movie to figure that out.  I saw the "twist" of The Illusionist coming a mile (possibly two) away.  :)

Just had a great conversation with Miss Cindy Williams.  She's about to be offered a current B'way show replacing someone (it's not a done deal and details have to be ironed out) but she's petrified of the songs.  So, I told her this was not something she should think about, that she HAD to do it, and that the songs would be no problem and that we'd work together on it here until she was completely comfortable with it before even beginning rehearsals.  And, what made her ever more comfortable was that if it were to work out, she'd rehearse in September and I'll be there, and if she's freaking out or needs help I can provide it.

DR JOSE - my friend Vickie would like Ms Lee's autograph, too, if possible.

She was the person who first told me about this show she had seen in New York about DANCERS!!!  And she bought me one of those Brass Ticket Key Holders that was a ticket to the show....still have it!

Ticket Price printed on it:  $15.00

OK.  I'm going to sit in the put-in rehearsal tomorrow afternoon - with orchestra - so that should provide me with enough time to get Ms. Lee to sign a few Playbills.  -And I think I still have one of those ticket key chains too.

Mickey is made of money, that's for sure.

Just ask Annette who sued to get out of her Mouseketeer contract, but lost.  Of course Walt then renegotiated with her (she had acquired an agent between 1955 and 1958, imagine that).....and by 1964 she was making a whopping $1500 per week with a guarantee of 40 weeks of employment per annum.

I put in "Anne of Cleves" from THE SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII. This has always been my least favorite episode from the series, but since I had seen the others many times and this one only a couple, I thought I might give it another chance. It's not at all bad, of course, but the lack of drama just makes it come out on the bottom of the episodes for me.

I watched another MOONLIGHTING episode. In order to give Cybill and Bruce basically a week or so off, the episode centered on Agnes Dipesto. Entitled "North by North Dipesto," she gets wrapped up in espionage without knowing what's going on. And in her usual addled state of mind, she was more confused than ever and a total victim throughout which made the episode kind of irritating.

He seems like he's playing a little more mature Jimmy than Jack Larson played. He can even fly an airplane.

Pierre Watkin plays Perry White in the serials. When SUPERMAN (the TV series) was renewed for a seventh season, John Hamilton (Perry White) died before production started (so, inevitably, did George Reeves). Pierre had been hired to reprise HIS version of Perry White for the seventh season.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fredric_Brown (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fredric_Brown)

I haven't read everything by Fredric Brown, but I've really loved what I have read...which has mostly been his science fiction and short stories.  I used to have a copy of the short story collection, "Space On My Hands" that had the top of a nude woman and instead of legs, she had fingers. :o I haven't been able to find a picture of it on-line but if I remember correctly, the picture has absolutely nothing to do with any of the stories. ::)

I had a Subway Club for lunch.  I picked up a package filled with DVD goodies - the same source (and final batch, since he's no longer working where he was) that got me all those wonderful DVD rarities of films that may or may not ever come out on DVD, all in glorious 16x9 transfers.  I'm watching Under The Yum Yum Tree right now.  For those who read Kritzer Time, you know that I used to love this play, even though it's smarminess is completely unacceptable in these times, and it's horribly dated.  But I never loved the film version because it's opened up so much, and because Jack Lemmon just isn't as good as any of the people I saw do his role, which included Del Moore and Richard Erdman, amongst others.  Dean Jones is fine as the younger fellow (played mostly by Bill Bixby the many times I saw the show), and Carol Lynley is very pretty - she was at the Hollywood Collector's Show this past weekend and if you didn't know it was her you wouldn't know it was her.

It's a nice neighborhood.  It's a bit "empty" right now due to a couple of empty store fronts on the south-east side of 9th Ave.  However, El Centro is right on the corner there - great Mexican food.  -I believe DR Cillaliz and I ate there.  Plus, you're right down the street from DR Jason's former workplace - MTI.  There are some other good, basic diners in the area too.

You'd be a few blocks from the 50th and 59th Street/Columbus Circle subway stops too.  Plus, there's a mini-farmer's market that sets up shop up on the corner or 9th and 57th.  And since you're not on 8th Ave., and a few blocks from Times Square, it's also quieter at night.

Great news!  At what point can you say which show??

Now I forget who said it in those interviews.....but it makes perfect sense....and now I will never forget it:

GYPSY has the old show business snap and sparkle from Jule Styne and the darker future of show business from Stephen Sondheim.

Or something to that effect.

When I'm asked what Such Good Friends is like, and don't have time to go into detail, I tell people it's like Gypsy.  This is not a boast about its quality; it's just the type of show it is.  Lots of humor, very catchy songs, on-stage and not on-stage numbers, and a serious side.  Of course I have no mother-daughter material, nor a strip tease.  (If I could figure out how to work in a strip tease to a show about the early days of television, I would.   ::) )

Yes, I did write up a new version of the ending this morning.  And restructured the scene that involves a forget-your-cares seduction (along the lines of You'll Never Get Away From Me), so it's been a big day.

Question for FJL and BK: How many days of rehearsal are you planning for your NYMF shows?

And you just wouldn't believe HOW MANY people ask me about this.

Today I loathe and detest the US Post Office: whle packing up the office today, we came across 5 cartons of empty toner containers to be returned at the manufacturer's expense.  The cartons are clumsy and oversize but light and I thought, well, the PO has a pickup service.  I spent over 30 minutes on the US Postal site trying to decipher why the 9th floor info on our address would not go through.  On my second frustrating call to a voice on the PO's 800 number, I got through to a postal clerk who helped me and told me that I had to enter a suite number and our building was registered as having Suites 900-903.  How the hell was I to know that?

After all that madness, I tried to schedule a pickup only to be refused for not having any package going Overnight or 2-3 dad special delivery.  Damn!  What assholes.

...And the rain continues here in NYC.  It wasn't too annoying while walking around downtown, however, with all the scaffolding up around every other building, there were lots of little waterfalls here and there.  I'm just glad it's not windy and stormy, otherwise, we'd that pesky leak in our downstairs bathroom would probably return.

I WANT SOME RAIN!!!!!!!

Yes, we did eat there. It was very food. I mean very good

Sometimes I think we should all just quit eating.

Or maybe just eat ice cream. Ice cream has never been recalled, has it?

Yeah, there was the salmanilla (or however you spell that) from Schwanns a few years back. But I think maybe it's worth the risk

Hi folks!

Just wanted to pop in and let you know that I am alive and well.  The budget was submitted today and it looks like I'm in the clear--at least until January and vote happens.  Things still could go bad at that time with even deeper cuts of jobs.

Still it is hard to tell you that over 400 jobs are gone right now.   :'(  It won't take effect until October 1st but that's a small comfort to those people.

I've been trying to keep myself busy.  I painted the spare room (what I'm trying to call Mom's room) and the hall and the bathroom.  It was a bit of a mistake to try to do all of that over two weekends.  I will not attempt to do the living room for a few weeks.  I need a break!

I hope everyone here is happy and well.  I haven't heard anything bad.  I'm very glad for that.   :)

I painted the spare room white.  The bathroom and hall in something called "Blue Opal"--It was white when it went on the wall but turned a lovely pale shade of blue when it dried.

I bought "Creamy Beige" for the living room.  I think it looks warm and inviting.  I can't wait to get it all done.  I have to go out and pick up some curtains before I do the living room.

The old ones have to be tossed because of the smoke smell.  I will do some hunting for some nice ones on my upcoming weekend off.

As DR elmore stated, there's no way that she would be right for Mrs. Banks in Mary Poppins.  Just listen to the OCR.  However, she could possibly be right for the maid or the "evil" Nanny, but that would all depend on her English accent.

The Longshots are definitely longshots.  ;D

And there's really nothing in Legally Blonde either.

As for Mamma Mia!, there's a remote possibility that she could play Tanya or Rosie, but, again, those are very remote possibilities.  The producers of Mamma Mia! are against stunt-casting.  They prefer to hire "actors" rather than "names".

I really need to decide if I'm going to try to go. I really want to, but even with the lodging from the sites it's going to be an expensive trip. If I could be sure business would stay as busy as it is now, there would be no question, but it's only been 2 weeks, so who knows what will happen.

This morning I was #96 on the waiting list for the Harry Potter audiobook from my library; tonight I'm #64.  Still hope that I'll have it for the drive to WI on Sunday, but Richard's about to finish reading it so he may not want to listen right away.

Evening, all...

I'm just about to head down and finish up my laundry before packing and heading to bed. I have a 9:45 flight tomorrow morning, which should put me in NYC around 1:10. Keep your collective fingers and toes crossed!

We had a loverly time at the zoo and in the pool today, and yes...Chick-Fil-A was consumed and enjoyed. Huzzah! Mom took me and my brother and his lovely girlfriend out for a wonderful steak dinner, as well, as a kind of late 30th birthday dinner for me and an early 24th birthday dinner for him. Quite wonderful! Unfortunately, my dad had to fly out this morning for Omaha for business, so he was not able to join us in the festivities.

Several pictures have been taken over the last few days - mostly of the twins. I will post them when I'm able.

And now, I'm off...

Didja know that all Chick-Fil-A's are closed on Sundays so that the employees can go to church?

Hobby Lobby is like that also. They are not open on Sundays and close at 8 pm on weeknights.

Inability to smile on cue is one reason I could never be an actor.

Inability to act is another  reason.

Re:  botulism.  One my favorite Far Sides was a bunch of dead people sprawled around a big table with the subtitle  Babette's Feast, The Sequel:  Babette's Botulism (I think it was a Far Side, anyway).

Re:  Drew Carey.  I never watched, either, but I did by complete accident catch a couple of his different April Fool's episodes when they ran in syndication.  They were hysterical, and they had little "sticky notes" pointing out everything that was wrong.

Re:  Cindy Williams and Drowsy.   Maybe I imagined it, but didn't Drowsy post a closing notice for August?  Did I make that up?  I could have sworn someone posted something to that effect either here or on Preeo's listserve.

Outside performances...

I have noat seen many for summer is rather short and outside theatre is rather scarce.

I do like the Melodrama they put on at Medora in the North Dakota Badlands....  The Melodrama was done near dusk and it is an amazing site as the sun sets and it plays on the rocks and different colors dance as darkness descends.

A number of years ago they did Sound of Music at Frostfire up near Walhalla, ND. BEautiful scenery and rolling hills and gorges in the Pembina River country.

I did manage to watch one more SUPERMAN chapter. In this one, LEx Luthor has managed to steal radium so he can forge synthetic kryptonite. Superman sinks into a stupor as the episode ends.

I have found it amazing how many plots for future SUPERMAN TV episodes were fashioned from this serial. This is at least the fourth event from the serial that wound up later as a TV episode.

As for Holly Hunter's new series, I did like the actors very much, but I didn't find the case very involving, and the religious angles in the plot didn't make it any more fascinating for me.

I'll watch one more episode, but I am thinking this is a series that I'll be passing on after next week.

Oh....I love the OBC album for ILLYA DARLING.....particularly side one, and I don't think I have played side two nearly as much.

And Orson makes me laugh on this record.   I would guess I would have liked him in the show a lot.  Just didn't like him in THE CLOSER.

You wouldn't want me to say I like him just to be polite, wouldya?  I might be struck by lightning.  (A Miriam Hopkins reference)

DR FJL....not having talent has NOT stopped many a performer that I have seen.

The rest of the cast is not exactly who I expected, and I am not sure about the guy playing Willie.....I shall know more after the read thru on Thursday.

Tonight we rehearsed and rehearsed and rehearsed the Abduction Ballet from THE FANTASTICKS.....and I am very sore....even if they asked, I doubt that I could die again.

I got my "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" in today's mail.

I put it -- still inside its sealed mailing box -- on the table behind my desk.

One of my co-workers exclaimed, "Oh! You've got the new 'Harry Potter'!

"How is it?  Did someone die?  Was it the wizard?"

I glared at her and said, "It 'just' arrived."

"It's still in its box," I continued.

"I haven't opened it."

She looked at me expectantly.

"I haven't had time to read it."

"Oh!" she said.  "It's been out since Saturday!"

I double-glared at her.

"And yet my copy arrived not five minutes ago.  Do the math."
