Title: BRYLCREEM
Post by: bk on July 28, 2007, 12:07:10 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were catchy, and now it is time for you to post until the catchy cows come home - they're currently touring the world looking for Brylcreem.

And here is an Unseemly Trivia Contest question:

This season produced one huge musical hit, several other musical hits, a lot of musical misses, a few hit plays, and a lot of flop plays - in other words, business as usual.  This particular flop play at least eked out a modest run, even though it was never heard of again.  It was by a well-known and popular playright, who was also a well-known and popular screenwriter of some classic films.  It was directed by a well-known director.  In the cast was an actor who'd recently appeared in a classic musical and who would go on to play a memorable role in a film version of a Broadway musical.  Also an actor who would go on to have a diverse film career, appearing in several classic motion pictures.  Also in its cast were a male and female actor who would have an interesting connection years later.  Also in the cast was a young actress who would have a semi-successful career in movies (she appeared in at least one classic by a hugely popular film director), and would then star in a beloved television series opposite a beloved television star.  Finally, another actor in the cast would have legendary status doing something other than acting.

So:

Name the play and its author.

Name the play's well-known director.

Name the actor who'd recently appeared in a classic musical and  would go on to play a memorable role in a film version of a Broadway musical and name his role in that film.

Name the actor who would go on to have a diverse career in films, and name at least two of the classic films he appeared in.

Name the male and female actors who would go on to have a very interesting connection many years later.

Name the young actress who would go on to a semi-successful film career, name her classic film and the hugely successful director, and name her beloved television series and her co-star.

Name the actor who would achieve legendary status for something other than acting.

Good luck to one and all and also all and one.  Remember, do not post your answers to the site.  Send them to me at bruce@haineshisway.com.

Let's just see if any of our regular smarty-pants get THIS one!

You'll wonder where the yellow went when you brush your teeth.....
(Bucky Beaver?)

Brylcreem was a well known jingle here too.

I still remember the sickly scent of Californian Poppy hairoil.
Old spice - no thank you.

(But then I do not care for perfumes and scents much at all - especially if they are "heavy").

Marlboro of course!  (The Julie London version - filter, flavoor (flavour), flip-top box.)

Well.....sometimes the best thing to say is Nothing At All.  Vickie, my friend with whom DR JOSE is somewhat familiar, taught me that as a director.

And last night.....I just sat down with the director and we started going through the music.  When we needed something, we fixed it.  When it worked, we did it again to reinforce it.

Yesterday afternoon, the set was built....to show specifications.  Some minor adjustments had to be made, and were done.

Hopefully Monday - first day off book will go as smoothly.

Also had a SUNSHINE BOYS blocking rehearsal...all my scenes except the "Doctor Sketch".....

Good morning, all!  DR FiFilepew, when are you going to materialize and say hello? I hope you're not the infamous Fat Conductor of Limitless Ego and Limited Talent?

Back to Toyland for another round of edits today and little beyond that.  Because of the whole office megillah, I've been pondering a time to see THE PEOPLE VS MONA by my friend Jim Wand, so I got a ticket for this evening.  I'm looking forward to it.

I had a nice email from Rodney Gilfry, who just played Joe in the Ravinia Festival concert of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA with George Hearn.  He'll be in Manhattan in early September, so I may drag him down to a rehearsal for "The Brain."  He thinks the CD is a hoot.

DR FJL, why didn't you post this site?

Thank you, DR Julie.  It will be relaxing for me, but not for DH Richard.  It's his quarterly residency week for the distance learning MA in Ministry program, so he'll be in class and church most of the time.  Last month, he played while I worked in Washington, DC, so this time our roles are reversed!

No, DR Singdaw.  I "suspended" my reserve list, meaning that nothing will be filled for me until just before I go back to work.  Since Richard just finished reading the book with his eyes, he probably wouldn't want to read it with his ears right away.  We have some other audiobooks for the roadtrip.

I was looking at the photos and write-ups of the EMA convention which was in Las Vegas two weeks ago. I may have to stop "trivializing" (my word for working on the trivia question) for a while, although as usual, when it takes longer to answer the trivia question, I learn more about theatre than I do on the easy ones.

This search through the ibdb is a real reminder that so many talented artists had forgotten misfires, but it seems that the artists that endured professionally were the lucky ones who had their hits first, and therefore didn't have their careers killed by their msifires.

It IS fun looking at all this theatre history, even though it's more fun to actually get the answer.  :)  :)  :)

OH!

While walking around last night, I happened to run into a friend of mine, the friend who worked out the great deal for DR Jason and I to go on the cruise last fall.  Well, there's another cruise coming up in September... It's not an almost-freebie like last time, but it's a pretty good deal.  And it's a great itinerary: start in Vancouver, then down the West Coast with stops here and there, and ending up down in San Diego.  It's a two-week cruise, and, right now, it fits in with my work schedule.  However, it also overlaps with all the NYMF and HHW gatherings.  So... I'm supposed to get the details sometime this weekend, and I guess I'll just go from there.

As for the Topic of the Day...

Well, I remember Brylcreem very well since my dad used it for years - then he switched to the VO5 stuff.  I remember trying it out a few times, and I remember just how sticky and greasy it made my hair - and with my type of hair, I needed more than a little dab.  And there was that Brylcreem smell too which is something I could never really put my finger - or nose - on, but it was very distinct, very  Brylcreem-ish.

Speaking of catchy jingles, a story from my youth which bears repeating, about my Mom being concerned about her teenage son:  Gimbel's Department Store was running a commercial with the very lively, very exciting theme song "Gimbel's is getting better every day."  My Mom came running into the room when she first heard that commercial shouting "What's that commercial for?  Should we get some of that stuff for you?"  I was very confused, until she said she was sure they were singing "Pimples are getting better every day."

I've exhausted my usual research tools.  There's no obvious "hook" this time, which I'm sure the devious BK did on purpose.  However, and I've been meaning to mention this before, does anyone else keep turning up the same names when researching these things?  It gets hilarious after a while.  Today's ubiquitous names were (IIRC--may have them wrong) Guthrie McClintic (or something like that) and, my new favorite, Speed Lamkin.

Jose - Rose's Turn sadly closed about a week ago, to make room for what the West Village desperately needed - another real estate office.  There was only about a week's notice that it would close.  A number of the former staff members are going to be joining the newly renovated piano bar at RUBY FRUIT on Hudson Street.

It's a terribly sad loss to the cabaret community, following so closely on the heels of the recent closings of Danny's Skylight Room and Helen's.

Hello, HHW!

Marvelous Matt is here, fixing the shower plumbing. You know, you start with a list. You never remember everything that should go on the list. But then, as you work the list, MORE THINGS BREAK!! UNFAIR!!  He and I are trying to whittle the list down. We're making progress. He's doing fine, but I'm exhausted.

HAVE A LOVELY VACATION, DR GINNY!

Thank you, DR Jeanne!  The Monday after we get back, the Maytag repairman is due here to fix both our washer (works, but leaks) and our stove.  The oven element blew just as DH Richard was putting meat loaf in for our dinner the other night.  When I got home from work, he told me I'd missed the visit from an ambulance, a pumper, a hook & ladder, and the assistant fire chief (a former neighbor).  The meat loaf is now in the freezer, waiting to be baked until the oven is repaired.

Back from killing time.  I realized something as I was driving about in my motor car - I used to love doing Saturday drives to CD stores, big ones, mom and pops, everything.  Today, I was looking for something on CD and realized there are exactly two stores left in all of LA - Amoeba and Virgin.  I know you can get CDs at Best Buy and other jernts like that, but it really is shocking what's happened.  I'd go to Tower, Music Plus, the Wherehouse, and about fifteen mom and pop stores that carried new CDs - I'm not talking about used stores.  Horrible.

Just back from Hairspray. I really enjoyed it. John Travolta took some getting used to, he's almost too pretty to be Edna, but over all I thought it worked well and I enjoyed the changes.  I did think it was interesting they played some of the songs from the musical that weren't in the movie itself during the credits, like Momma I'm a Big Girl Now.

I loved Queen Latifah.

Would the cruise stop in Seattle??

Of course, I still miss 88's.  I made my NYC Cabaret debut there in the upstairs room playing for a friend.

The one time that I went to NYC, we went to 88's!  Terry White (of Barnum and Nunsense fame) was tending bar and I recognized her! :D I got her autograph on an 88's table card.  Several of us in the tour group even got to sing at 88's (mainly to each other).  It was a great night. :)

Both the Lou Rawls show and the Cleo Laine show had them singing scat with Dr. Tetth and the Electric Mayhem. Wonderful music by these pros, especially Cleo Laine.

Kind of funny hearing Lou Rawls doing "jive" talk that was so hip then and sounds so dated and alien now.

Does anyone know anything about some cable series called The Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman?  It's in my next pile, which should be arriving shortly before we leave on our vacation.

Speaking of which, we'll be in L.A. the weekend of August 10-11.  I'm assuming BK will be gone to NYC.  Any other Angelinos around then?

JMK will be glad to know that I've been filling in my Jobim collection.  I had most of the major ones, but I got about six others on their way.  Now, if there are any other orchestrally luscious ones by others I should get, let's hear the list - knowing that Terra Brasilis and Uburu are things I love.

If you do take it, maybe we can meet you at one of your stops.

I forgot the most exciting FANTASTICKS news.....Luisa was 1 1/2 hours late to rehearsal on Thursday night, because she was stopped by the police and nearly arrested for failure to pay over $1000 in traffic fines.

Her license was suspended.

However the police did not hold her.

See my next post for the answer to "Why?"

BK, you have seen my "wall o'Brasilian music," so I could make a list for you that would stretch to page 200 (your fondest dreams coming true, LOL).  I'll repeat some of my favorite artists and then you can go to town on your own treasure hunt (you can't go wrong with any of these, though some will be more orchestrated in the Ogerman/Sebesky style):

Any of the Caymmi family:
"Papa" Dorival, who was Carmen Miranda's MD--more old style samba
son Dori Caymmi (I think you would love Dori, he wrote "Like a Lover" among many others)
daughter Nana Caymmi (very, very low alto, haunting voice)
son Danilo Caymmi (is on a lot of the late Jobim albums, wrote "Brasil Nativo")

Marcos Valle (wrote a lot of the post-Jobim hits, like "Summer Samba")

Edu Lobo (absolutely incredible writer/guitarist, again post-Jobim, best known for tunes like "Casa Forte" and "Pra Dizer Adeus")

Milton Nascimento (quite possibly the most haunting singer/songwriter of the post-Jobim generation, too many classic tunes to list, though you might know the ones that Sarah Vaughan recorded)

Ivan Lins (the Gershwin of modern Brasilian music, and one of the most sophisticated songwriters of the past 25 years.  Too many altered dominant sevenths to throw a stick at, LOL.  You probably know his tune "The Island," but every album of his is exceptional).

OK that will keep you busy for a while.

I did come across Bis Co. over on 10th Avenue this afternoon whilst walking around. The store just got a write-up in the NY Times.  They specialize in biscotti - the proprietor/baker makes about 16 varieties at a time.  Some of them are even savory.  Today's selection - well, my selection at least: Black Pepper-Marsala-Sesame Seed, Mango-Cashew-Coconut, Lemon-Pignoli, and Chocolate Chip-Macadamia-Chocolate.  All quite good, and only $0.85 each!  Quite the delicious bargain.

*She also has samples of all her varieties available for sampling.  OH!  And she also makes gelato too.  I sampled the Peanut Butter and Jelly Gelato.  Soooo good!  Maybe next time I'll have more than just a small spoonful.

Now we're back home and he has been subjected to Little Marcy. Perhaps he wishes he had stayed in NY.

I have returned from the theatre, and I loved THE PEOPLE VS MONA, a very charming, extremely funny, country-western musical set in a Tippo, Georgia, bar "The Frog Pad" and a courtroom during a murder trial.  I believe my favorite song may be Mona's "Locked Up Blues" ("a fact I have to face: I'm in love with my attorney and he's never won a case"), but the whole score, by Jim Wann of PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES, is extremely clever, played by a great 3-piece band who also acts and sings, and a mighty talented cast.  The show ends next Sunday, Aug. 4, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I hope it gets a transfer and/or a recording.  It's quite wonderful and deserves a long run.

Next, I watched a couple of the special features on the MUPPET SHOW fourth disc including a series of 13 questions asked of the Muppets and a music video  done with Weezer which looks like it could have been a four minute skit from MUPPETS TONIGHT, their unsuccessful ABC series done in the style of the classic MUPPET SHOW.

We just watched the 11pm news coverage and they said that the wife was pulled from the burning house by a visiting nurse and taken by helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.  The husband apparently was not hospitalized.

In any case, LOVED "The Simpsons Movie"!  Funny, clever, smart, crass, and heart-warming!  And that was just the audience in the theatre! ;)  -It was my first time going to a late-show in Times Square, and I have to say the some of the pre-movie and during-movie "entertainment" was, well, pretty entertaining.  ;D

But I did love the movie, and it had me - like DR JMK - laughing out loud loud and often.  And as most of the reviews have pointed out, it's a movie even the very, very casual fan/watcher of the "The Simpsons" (on TV) can enjoy.

And, as much as I hate to admit it, I'm wondering what kind of extras will be on the DVD.

The question being, in your list, which are the most Ogerman/Sebesky-like?

While one hears raves and not-so-raves for most movies that have opened recently, I've not heard one negative thing about The Simpsons movie.  I don't think anyone thought it was going to do anything, and I think when the BO numbers are released it will surprise everyone.

JMK - thanks for the list - which of those is specifically orchestrated in the Ogerman/Sebesky style?  I'll start with those.

Get the self titled Dori Caymmi on Elektra that Sergio Mendes produced.  Not hugely orchestral, but reminiscent of Urubu.  Also get the Qwest (Quincy Jones' old label) release of Ivan Lins, Awa Yio.  You will probably like the CTI release of Milton Nascimento called Courage, with orchestrations by Deodato very much in the Sebesky vain, and, finally, get Marcos Valle's sweet, Jobim-esque Samba '68 on Verve, again with Deodato arrangements.

I'm back (actually, I have been for a while) from seeing both "Hairspray" and "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix."  Well, let me say that I thought that both movies were very good!  I didn't even mind John Travolta as much as I thought I would (I did say that I'd go into it with an open mind ::)).  Anyway, "Hairspray" is just a great feel-good movie.  And "Harry Potter" felt like it flowed quite well.  I'm sure that I'll see both movies again. :)
