Title: WAIT FOR IT
Post by: bk on July 30, 2007, 12:05:29 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were - wait for it - notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - we're - wait for it - waiting for it to happen and we've been waiting for about four years.

Favorite Marlon Brando movies:

Superman (the first one)
Guys and Dolls.

I think that those are the only two Marlon Brando movies that I've seen. ::)

Does anyone have any thoughts on the Tom Ripley book series by Patricia Highsmith? I enjoyed the movie version of "The Talented Mr. Ripley," and I feel that I'd enjoy the books, but I wonder if any of you DRs (particularly the librarians in the bunch) are familiar with the books... Any opinions...?

So...

I'm type, type, typing away, and chat, chat, chatting away a little earlier, when a friend I haven't seen in years IMs me.  And it turns out that he's in town for the weekend, and that he was at Gypsy earlier tonight too!!!!!  And since he's staying at the Beacon, and since he's flying back to Florida in a few hours, and since he decided just to stay up until his car service came, well... We decided to meet at French Roast on Broadway - one of the many 24-hour bistros in town.  And that's what we did. We had a great time catching up, and they were surprisingly busy for a Sunday night/Monday morning.  And I did allow myself to indulge in their gratin of macaroni and fromage.  Tres, tres, delicieux!  And a cup of their surprisingly good chocolat chaud, avec a cruller.

So, he should be on his way to Newark about now, and I probably should be heading to bed.  Of course, I'm now sooooo wired.  Part adrenaline, part sugar/chocolate high, part just good ole good times natural high.  -And it's a full moon too!  -Which probably means I may just end up staying up all night.  Which actually seems like a reasonable idea.  If one can truly be reasonable at 4:38am.  ;)

I'm pleased for those who enjoyed "Gypsy" and that Ms LuPone was so well received.

Each to his own - I find the voice "ugly". I've tried to "adjust" to it. I find Bernadette irritating at times too. (Her "Song & Dance" recording is  - for me - unlistenable)

OH!  That's right.  But I don't have any traveling coming up today.  And I don't think it was a full moon either.  I just sometimes stay up during full moons.  And that "habit" started in college when my Song Literature teacher came in one day to class not looking so hot - and she always looked hot.  Well... We asked her what was wrong, and she said that she never really sleeps during full moons.  So... Of course, 28 days later, we all walk into class having not slept well, if at all.  The power of suggestion.  For better or worse.

Title: Re:WAIT FOR IT
Post by: S. Woody White on July 30, 2007, 04:35:03 AM
I've survived another weekend.

I'm having some real issues at work these days.  It seems that someone at corporate decided that every store that has self-scan registers should have a select group of people manning said registers.  Not just anyone is qualified for the job.  The select people have to be patient, helpful, kind, courteous, knowledgable - I'd say they'd have to be real Boy Scouts, but I'm the only male on the crew at our store.

(Don't go there, I know what you're thinking.)

We've only got six people on our crew (myself, Kerri, Gail, Danielle, Rachael, Terry... well, Brenda as a back-up, sort of) out of a much larger cashier pool.  The self-scan registers are open from eight in the morning until ten-thirty at night.  This means that the six of us (plus Brenda, sort of) have to man those registers for one hundred and one point five hours every week.  That comes to seventeen hours each week for each of us, if everything were divided equally.  Which, of course, they rarely are.

The problem is, working self-scan is a real killer.  It doesn't have the person-to-person contact that working a regular register has, but it requires keeping the same level of people skills up.

The best analogy I can come up with relates to Jose.  Sure, he could play keyboards in the pit by just jumping in every time, but to be really good at it, he's got to practice, practice, practice, or the skills just aren't going to be there.  The same thing applies to working a register - if I don't keep honing my people skills, they aren't going to be there when I need them at self-scan.

And the same applies to the rest of our select crew.

So, I'm having to protest whenever I'm assigned to self-scan for more than twenty hours a week.  And, to be perfectly fair, I'm going to protest when any of my cohorts gets assigned more than twenty.  This isn't just about me.

Maybe management will get the idea that they really do need more than six on the team.  Plus Brenda, sort of.

And that is the end of my news.

Good morning, all!  I was so happy to run into John after at least 10 years that I forgot to mention I saw Marc Shaiman as well last night.  He looks quite happy; I guess that's the price of success. I also ran into Michael Portantiere who edited the Theatremania guide to musical theatre recordings.

Then I had strange Sondheim dreams.  I suppose running into him on his way to the bar put my mind on that course. I remember nothing of the dream now except that I had to see him either with some questions for something I was working on or socially, but it's all too vague now.

Today, I just put the laundry into the washers, and I shall putter arond the apartment for a bit and run a few errands.

TOD:
   Guys and Dolls
   A Streetcar Named Desire
Teahouse of the August Moon (yes, I know it's un-PC to the nth degree!)

LAND OF THE GIANTS, one of my favorite TV series, is being released on DVD tomorrow but I will be skipping on it.  Both seasons of the show are packaged into this one mega-set for a whopping $170 (and that's Amazon's price!)  Way too pricey for just 51 episodes!  The set includes a lot of memorabilia junk that I don't think helps to justify the price.  That, plus the fact that it all comes in a box that will not fit neatly into my DVD library, makes this one a loser in my opinion.

Land of the Giants needed Kurt Kaszner like it needed a hole in the head.  I was much more interested in the stories of those people on that planet than a Dr. Smith rip off.

Lost interest after a few episodes.

Favorite Brando: almost all of his early work but especially STREETCAR, JULIUS CAESAR, THE WILD ONE, and ON THE WATERFRONT.

Curiously, I don't much care for his Oscar-winning performance in THE GODFATHER. That's probably sacrilege, but I don't find it amounting to much. DESIREE is another lazy, uninteresting performance.

I do like him in A DRY WHITE SEASON among his late career efforts. I think REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE is underrated and so is MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY.

I have never seen THE YOUNG LIONS, and there it sits on my to-watch shelf; it has been there for a couple or years. I never seem to get to it.

I seesaw back and forth on GUYS & DOLLS. I think he's fine in the acting moments, but over the years, the singing has bothered me more and more.

My mother can't sleep when it's a full moon.

DR Jose....I'm sure Sam would LOVE to step on "the line" and so would I. She's looking at websites for shows and will be making her selection soon.  I thought Legally Blonde would be her immediate choice, but she's thinking about seeing "Niles" and I sent her the ACL website as well as the Playbill list of current shows. I think they all have links to the websites, so she's going to check them out.

She did tell me she doesn't want to shop and wants to be a tourist.  So, I'm going to have to figure out the best way to do that.  The tour busses seem awfully expensive when we could take the subway and walk around in different areas.  She said she wants to see the Statue of Liberty, so I'm going to have to find out if she wants to be up close and personal or see it from a boat...

Well, thank you DR slingblade.  How tacky of you to point that out!  Actually, I was supposed to be at work two hours ago, but I called and said I would be late.  And guess what?  I am late.  I think I am having a reaction to the anti-inflammatory medication that I am taking.  I am feeling very groggy today.

She said she wants to see the Statue of Liberty, so I'm going to have to find out if she wants to be up close and personal or see it from a boat...

While the Statue of Liberty is a wonderful sight to behold, I think it's just as good to see it from a half-hour (actually full hour since you have to come back) trip on the Staten Island Ferry. Granted, you don't get close up but you do get the full effect (IMHO) and you don't have to wait in line for a Circle Line Ferry to Liberty Island. If you are not on the first or second boat the line for said ferry can be quite long and if you're pressed for time the SI Ferry might be the better answer. It's free (after a subway ride downtown) and if it's a hot day you will get a nice breeze off the Hudson.

I agree with DR Ben.  Take the Staten Island Ferry if you want to appreciate the Statue.  Unless you really need to see the museum in the base, a little distance makes her even more impressive.  Besides, if it is hot (and it is September) the termperature inside the statue is often to warm for you to climb it.

DR JoseSPiano, have you seen the latest issue of New York Magazine?  It's their 2007 Cheap Eats (http://nymag.com/restaurants/cheapeats/2007/) issue.

Bought it last week, and have already made a couple of notes.  :)

*However, there's also a somewhat "real" article in that issue about "Broadway's Test Tube Babies", Max and Laura, and the upcoming revival of "Grease".  And a rather fascinating and, ultimately, sad article about married men leading double-lives.

Well, if she really does want to see Curtains, I think... Oh, nevermind.  ;)

Some of the busses aren't too bad, and I usually advise people not to buy tickets until the day they want to go.  Yes, it can be a little bit of a hassle dealing with those guys on the street, but at least you will know what the weather will be like when you're riding around.

As for the Statue of Liberty, when some friends went a few weeks ago, they mentioned that there was some sort of call-in-advance-two-weeks deal to be able to get up close and personal with the Statue.  ???  And as others have already mentioned, taking the ferry that takes you to the Statue - and Ellis Island is quite the time investment.  Usually a minimum of two to three hours depending on the lines.  -And that's without getting off the boat.

Does she want to sight-see each day she's here, or just take one day to cover the island?  -If she's feeling adventurous - as well as you - and you have comfortable shoes, you could always take the subway down to Battery Park, look at the Statue from the shore, then start walking back uptown: Wall Street, Ground Zero, cut over to South Street Seaport to see the Brooklyn Bridge, Chinatown, Little Italy, etc.  -And then just hop on the train anytime you want to skip a couple of blocks.  And rest your feet.
Title: Re:WAIT FOR IT

...Or you could hop on one of the MTA busses for $2.00, and ride the length and/or width of the island with some of the locals.

Yard work finished; worker paid: glad this is done. Now, it's going to be up to me to either maintain it myself, or hire someone to take the backyard in hand.

I can do the front. It's not big, and I can cut it in about 20 minutes. The back yard is another story entirely. My former partner did mow it many moons ago with an electric mower, but whatever extension cords he had to get all the way back there (it's a very deep lot but fairly narrow) aren't here now. I bought two 40' ones, and they weren't long enough to do the job. I guess a trip to Wal-Mart seems imminent.

I took my mom and cousin when they were here last year and my mom, who's been here three or four times now, agreed that it was the best way to see a great deal of the City for a very reasonable amount of money. We got great, up-close views of the Statue without having to actually go in it and then we passed under the Brooklyn Bridge, passed the financial district, Battery Park, the U.N....it was fantastic. I highly recommend it.

Yes...that's the one we did. It starts out on the west side at 42nd Street, circles the Statue of Liberty, and then does the lower loop up to the U.N., then turns around and comes back.

I'm afraid we scared off poor Noel.  When I saw last week's posts I feared it might - this happened four years ago - I found it strange then and I find it strange now - no one posted anything nasty - just constructive, and this sort of thin-skin is amazing to me, especially after someone's been in absentia for four years, and especially because on this site no one does things to be mean, nor maliciously.

I was looking forward to hearing more about the casting and production, but alas, we won't.  Not really a good way to be when people have shown their support by saying they'll see your show, but that's just me.

I was in a CD store the other night, and they had a ton of Japanese imports of a bunch of 101 Strings albums from the 50s, 60s, and even 70s.  I loved those as a kid (I don't really know why) - these were all on sale for three bucks so bought a few of them, and I really am having fun listening to them.  Lots of show covers (whole shows, and separate songs) and about five volumes of film themes.

It’s not a thin skin so much as a desire to please.

I view NYMF as a tremendous learning opportunity.  What I’ve recently discovered is that what I would most like to hear about a show-in-development is not what others want to hear.  I certainly don’t feel any sort of ill-will (the posts were constructive, not nasty), but am appreciatively listening to the suggestion that I keep my cards closer to my vest.

There was another good episode where they discover their oldest son has been smoking pot and storing it under a chair on their patio. It was a very down-to-earth episode where they put their cards on the table about their own previous drug use and their expectations for him.

I also looked at the blooper reel which is really the only bonus feature of note in the set. Some of the bloopers played during the closing credits in the various episodes that they came from. Others were seen for the first time.

Monday afternoon greetings from Nashotah House, just north of Delafield, Wisconsin, which is just west of Milwaukee.  DH Richard is here for the 5th of his 8 required residency weeks and it's the first time I've been able to join him.  The faculty, staff, and his fellow students have all been most welcoming to me.

We left home Sunday morning, as planned, about 7:30 and it took us about 9 hours to drive here.  We stop more often than others might and we spent about an hour in Merrillville, Indiana, having lunch, shopping for chocolate at Fannie Mae, and seeing the Anglican ProCathedral there.  We are staying in a 2-bedroom apartment in the married housing area, which became quite comfortable once we figured out how to turn on the air conditioning.

Today, Richard was off early for his first day of class and I puttered around the apartment before meeting him at 11:45 for a tour of the library, lunch in the refectory, and a visit to the campus bookstore.  He left me there when it was time for class to resume for the afternoon.  Now I'm on a computer in the basement of the library.

Great Suggestion.   I think we could do that.
Title: Re:WAIT FOR IT
Post by: Cillaliz on July 30, 2007, 04:45:48 PM
I agree with DR Ben.  Take the Staten Island Ferry if you want to appreciate the Statue.  Unless you really need to see the museum in the base, a little distance makes her even more impressive.  Besides, if it is hot (and it is September) the termperature inside the statue is often to warm for you to climb it.

You can't really climb it anymore

...Or you could hop on one of the MTA busses for $2.00, and ride the length and/or width of the island with some of the locals.

Great ideas.  I told her to start looking at tourism sites on the internet and write down the 5 things she wants to see the most and thought I could put together a tour from that, including some other spots along the way. That worked out really well for Jon.   I don't really want to take a commercial tour and I checked out the Statue of Liberty website last night that says expect to take 4 hours or something like that.  I think the Ferry sounds like a great idea. I think we'll do the Empire State Building. I really like Top of the Rock, but Sam watched tons of movies, and there just is no real substitute for the Empire State. I got a huge kick out of the bicycle guy pulling the carts tour of Central Park.  It's a nice view in more ways than one!

DR JoseSPiano, have you seen the latest issue of New York Magazine?  It's their 2007 Cheap Eats issue.

Found the link to that double-lived article (http://nymag.com/news/features/34985/).  There's a couple of quotes that interested me.

First, a comment by the subject of the article:

Quote
Close as they were, William couldn’t imagine telling his friends about his interest in men. “No one was gay, no one even knew anyone who was gay,” he says. “It’s not that I was scared of being judged, but of being seen differently. Like if my friends were all going out to a bar to hit on girls, maybe I wouldn’t be invited. For lack of a better analogy, it’s like with actors, when you find out someone playing a straight role is gay. You don’t look at him the same way. I guess that’s always been my greatest fear.”

That pretty well seems to sum the guy up, in his own words.

On the other hand, there's that comment by the shrink, Richard Isay:

Quote
I ask him if he has ever heard of Richard Isay, a psychiatrist who has written at length about gay men, himself included, who have been in straight marriages. Isay believes that most gay men who marry do so as a way of denying their homosexuality. “Every homosexual man who marries,” he writes in Becoming Gay: The Journey to Self-Acceptance, “does so, in my clinical experience, because of early self-esteem injury that has caused him to see homosexuality as bad, sinful or sick.” Another of Isay’s theories has a Freudian undercurrent: “Every married man I have seen has needed to repeat with his spouse the sense of having been emotionally deprived by his mother. The futile hope of mastering this trauma provides one powerful but unconscious motive for these heterosexual marriages.”

What a load of crap!  William, the article's subject, clearly does NOT "see homosexuality as bad, sinful or sick."  He says so, repeatedly.

Quote
No, he is not religious. No, he was not raised in a religious or bigoted household. No, he does not think being attracted to men is “wrong.” No, it’s not that simple. This much he will allow: “This is not the life I was meant to live. I don’t know what that life is, what it looks like, but I know it’s not this. But I don’t think most people are living the life they think they were meant to live, so I don’t feel that bad.”

This is clearly in contradiction with what Isay espouses.

Looking over der Brucer's history, what is more probable is the idea that William is living the life he was told he was supposed to live, totally in ignorance of what else might be possible, and now has no idea of how to change that life.

Der Brucer was told, by his senior officers, to find himself a wife.  That's what he did.  Whether those senior officers had any idea of what and who der B was doing, we have no proof, but my hunch is that they had zero inklings, that it was simply beyond their comprehension.

But it wasn't beyond der B's comprehension, which was why he was able to walk away from that life and move on to a life that, eventually, included me.

It is my conviction that being gay, happily out-of-the-closet gay, takes imagination, to conceive that life can be different and to move towards that life.

Or, if you prefer taking your lessons from the widow of Beauregard Jackson Pickett Burnside, "Life is a banquet..." and I think you know the rest of that line.

DR Cilla: The Circle Line boat tours are wonderful and really not very expensive.

I'm hungry.

Thanks Jason,  how long is the cruise?

Good Evening!

Back from dinner with DR Jason.  I had a Mesclun Salad with Grilled Salmon, Balsamic Dressing on the side.  -And I have to say, the salads I've had at Westway Diner lately have been very good and very fresh.

Then we headed up to Amy's Bread so that DR Jason could get a treat.  Well, when we walked in, we didn't see a cake stand with a Monkey Cake on display, so we started looking at the other options.  Well... Since it couldn't hurt to ask... "Do you have Monkey Cake?" -Oh, let me check in the back.  -That's when DR Jason starts shaking his fists in the air.  ;)  And, of course, a few moments later, the clerk comes back from the back with a Monkey Cake.  So, DR Jason got his slice.  And I got one too.  ;)

And thus concludes my food consumption for the day.

DR SWW - I think the reporter was "simply" presenting Dr. Isay's theories as a contrast to William's situation.  I don't think he was outright saying that that was what William was doing, going through.  The reporter was just trying to present some other possible reasons/theories for William's situation and personal motivations.  It's meant to be a "contradiction".

At some point here, I've got to get dinner cooking.

I'm thinking chicken legs (with thigh portion) roasted with a shiitake/smoked paprika butter tucked under the skin.  A variation on something I've done before.

And, on the side, something I've found in Norman Van Aken's New World Kitchen: Papas Chorreadas with Romaine (translated as Potatoes in Cheese Sauce with Shredded Romaine).  The cheese sauce involves onion, tomatoes, cream, and pepper jack cheese, and sounds absolutely delish/decadent.

Only problem is, der B has just now reminded me that we have cooked shrimp for cocktails waiting in the chill chest - can't those wait until after we head to the farmer's market tomorrow, and have some other ingredients to play with?   :-\

And continuing DR JoseSPiano's Magazine Reader...

In the current issue of Runner's World (September 2007), there's a wonderful article by a writer who composed his own personal New York City Marathon.  He started up at his current home in Westchester County, then worked his way south through the Bronx, Harlem, the West Side, Chelsea, and then ending in the Bronx.  He based his route according to his own personal landmarks: old apartments, places of businesses, bars, restaurants, playgrounds, etc.  Quite a fun read, and somewhat inspirational too.

Brenda had a fever so I don't think that would be allergies, diabetes (funny but we really don't want to watch her give up her sugar again) or a thyroid problem.

Kidz!

I graduated from High School in February of 1967, and began college in the theater department of Los Angeles City College, where Bruce Kimmel was also going to school. Forty-count'em-forty years later, plus a few months, I graduated with a BA yesterday, in Human Behavior, from Ryokan College in Mar Vista.

Little Penny Orloff is a college grad!!! And I completed my first year of a two-year master's program last Wednesday. Onward!

DR Cillaliz - Richard and I were taking the 3-hour cruise all the way around Manhattan last October when you and DR jhvw were traveling to NYC.  We thoroughly enjoyed it, but for a first-timer, the 2-hour might suffice.

And I agree that seeing the Statue of Liberty from the Staten Island Ferry is adequate.  Back in 1999, we told DS Rob that we had time to do one major sight before meeting DR Elmore at the much-missed Barrymore's and he chose going to the S of  L.  Having previously seen it from the S I Ferry a couple of times (which is breathtaking), I concluded that I could have gone my whole life without ever actually going there.  And, we almost got marooned on the island by a thunderstorm, which made us late for dinner with DR Elmore.

If you do ride the Staten Island Ferry, I recommend taking along a snack of Hershey's dark chocolate and bing cherries.  That's how my mother and I did it on my first trip to NYC - 40 years ago.  She and I repeated that culinary tradition in 1987 when we took a San Francisco Bay cruise that took us out under the Golden Gate Bridge.

Next, I put in the ROYAL WEDDING DVD and watched the "making of" documentary on it. Nice interviews with the usual talking heads (Richard Barrios, Miles Krueger, John Fricke, all of whom I like) and then they get to some folks who were actually INVOLVED with the production: Jane Powell and Stanley Donen.

SAVING GRACE once again had a jumbled sense of storytelling which isn't aided by the intrusions of that angel who swoops down at inopportune moments. And I find the dialog very hard to follow. Hunter's mushy Southern accent along with others who mumble or speak rapidly I find confusing.

I guessed the correct killer as well, but it was sheer luck. I wasn't really sure I knew clearly who all of the suspects were.

I think all I said was that it was part of a storyline that would continue over several more episodes.

She is having perimenopausal symptoms, but there's more to it than that. All will be revealed in Episode 310. (Tonight's was 307...) And we'll see S. Epatha again in that episode.

Me, too, and I'm used to Southern accents (and I guess you are, too, Matt!)

Absolutely. Being born in the SOuth and having lived here my entire life, I've encountered seemingly every kind of Southern accent, but I find Holly Hunter's particularly trying.
