Well, you've read the notes, the notes had ado and adon't, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're having ado and won't be home for hours.

And I got home to find the new blurb for the new book, from author Dick Lochte (my good luck charm) - here it is:

Like all of Bruce Kimmel's novels,  this one, a whodunit murder mystery, is
a love song to L.A., a celebration of even its noirish nooks and crannies.
His new sleuth-heroine, teenager Adriana Hofstetter, with her wardrobe from
decades past, her wry sense of humor and her odd favorite foods, is a bit
too unique for comparisons to Nancy Drew or Veronica Mars. But her shrewd
deductions and determination to see justice done, even at the expense of
smug policemen, could qualify her as a young Miss Marple, assuming that Miss
Marple were familiar with MySpace and enjoyed the occasional Strawnana Berry
Smoothie from Robeck's.

Dick Lochte, critic and author of "Croaked!"

Faxorite Kim Novak performance -  MIRROR CRACKED (sp?), when she said to Liz Taylor:  How wonderful to see that not only have you kept your lovely figure, you've added so much to it. (I'm paraphrasing.)

Kim Novak.  One of my favourites on screen. I found her presence enchanting. (even if the performance was not good - the camera loved her and so did I),

Flap Notes.....that's the name of my new novel.

Vibes for MR BK....and for friend of DR GEORGE...Margo....what a terrible thing.   I hate it when they bring someone in and tell them they have to cut X amount of dollars from the dept. budget, and the only thing they can think to do is GET rid of someone...especially someone at the top of their pay scale.

Taking a cue from DR JOSE....last night I put little 1.5 ounce packages of Animal Crackers on each of the musicians music stands....for them to find when they arrived.

I bought some different little....non messy treats for them as the days go by.  I will check tonight....if anybody left their package unopened, they won't get anything tonight.....

TOD:

I think I've only seen a finger or two of Ms. Novak's films.  But of those, I've certainly liked her performances in:

VERTIGO
BELL, BOOK AND CANDLE

I also recall her beeing a hoot during her FALCON CREST stint.

TOD:

Thought she was not quite right for PICNIC or MOLL FLANDERS.

Perfectly cast in:

BELL BOOK AND CANDLE
STRANGERS WHEN WE MEET

As DR TOMovOZ said, the camera loved her.  I usually enjoy her movies, she tries very hard....and is easy on the eyes....always.

Good morning, all!  10 hours! I slept 10 hours!  And I feel rather good at the moment.  I'm now waiting to hear from our office manager Matthew on when I can head down to the office to continue the unpacking.  Our new super had told us at noon yesterday that he would install the new lock on our door yesterday and then never returned! As a result, Maztthew has the only key for the working lock to the door.

DR Matt H, great news on HOT FUZZ! Have you seen SHAUN  OF THE DEAD? You might consider that for your other purchase. I can be such a pimp!

I haven't seen the news about the Minneapolis tragedy beyond the reports here, but what a horrible disaster.  I'm sure I'll be reading all about it in today's news on the way downtown.

On a pleasanter note, the TOD:
   Faves:  Vertigo
               Bell, Book and Candle
The Amorous Adventures of Moll Flanders (no DVD???)
                Picnic

   Not-so-faves: Pal Joey

Anyone have any recommendations on antivirus/firewall software for a PC?  I've had pretty good success with Norton products over the years, but their new Norton 360 is for the birds.  It screwed up my computer AND my Internet connections and has kept me on the phone to various customer service personnel for most of the past two evenings.   :P

Yes, the new complex is on the river. I just talked to my sister and phones are still wonky. The cell lines and even land lines were overwhelmed last night. Also, all television coverage is focused on the collapse. They are now also dealing with gawkers. Kids are out of school and have nothing better to do than head downtown to look at the mess. The cops are working to get bodies and cars out of the river and also trying to prevent other drownings by clueless folks who think they should be watching the rescue efforts.

David, I use

Spyware Terminator (http://www.spywareterminator.com/).

I gave up on Norton a couple of years ago. Why do they think I want all this extra crap! Norton used to be a top of the line program, now it's a bloated mess that does as much harm as good (IMHO).

I don't have any recommendations for firewalls. I use the Windows version (since we don't have high speed and an always on connection it's not quite so imperative to have a high security firewall) but I like Spyware Terminator. The title is misleading because it provides both spyware and virus protection. Depending on how you set up the program it will just guard against spyware if that's what you want but you can configure it for anti-virus work as well. Oh, yeah, it's free too like Grisoft/AVG.

DR Singdaw, is Comcast your ISP?  If so, they provider their clients with a totally free and complete version of MacAfee, which I feel is the best antivirus software currently out there.  It does get a bit irksome at times--the automatic updates can be incessant and you generally have to go through a barrage of "Allow changes to registry" messages every time you install new software, but the overall protection provided can't be beat.

As far as firewalls are concerned, I use the Windows XP version.  That, coupled with the protection I have through my wireless router makes me feel safe enough.

I never thought Kim Novak was much of an actress, but her coldness and blankness worked beautifully in VERTIGO. I also liked her in PICNIC.

Didn't like her much in PAL JOEY, KISS ME STUPID, or BELL, BOOK, AND CANDLE where I thought everyone else acted circles around her.

I've never seen JEANNE EAGLES (that bk discussed yesterday), but I'd like to one day.

As for "300", let me just say that the director had an "image" of Spartan manhood that he cast for...six-pack abs, gym physiques, anachronistic leather speedos and vast flowing red capes to give it some oomph.

I thought all the actors acquitted themselves with verve, especially when wielding those enormous spears and swords.

It's a visually powerful film, and the battle scenes are amazing.

If I may be allowed a KRITZER moment...

Nikki Blonsky, Tracy in HAIRSPRAY, is strongly reminiscent of a certain Lulu (Lolo in KRITZER TIME), known to BK and myself. Her size, height, boldness, love of attention--even her nose!--are so close it's uncanny. And, furthermore, she even had a taller, thinner, shier, blonde sidekick!

So, you fans of the Kritzer trilogy, when you come to Lolo, just think Nikki Blonsky.

Brain rehearsals take place in some rehearsal hall I haven't worked in before - actually the first week is at Nola, which I have worked at before, then we move somewhere else in mid-town for the duration of our rehearsals.  We don't actually get in the theater until the morning of our first performance night, which is a little nutty to me.

Back to 2007, I have much to do today. Boxes'o'stuff, as DR JOSE calls them, await. I am actually trying to organize my office. Horrors! Even the thought frightens me. But something must be done.

I worked out this morning, so I am feeling virtuous. Maybe that will give me the courage I need to face this daunting task.

In this case, it wasn't an issue of money.  They've actually added more than 30 new positions/jobs around the library district.

And Thanks for all the Vibes for Margo!!!  I'm saving them and will show them to her when she gets back from camping with her kids. :)

Ben, I am glad to hear that your family is safe and sound. The cops really dont need any gawkers watching them.

Maybe it's time to make the movie.

So I had a weird dream last night/this morning, and it was suggested to me by DR Jose that I post it to learn of possible interpretations. Here goes:

I was back at my old house (from middle school!) and, under pressure from the neighbors, I was being made to weed the front yard, which I did not like, mainly because I don't like to be told what to do. And then I was at the mailbox, which was totally full of stuff that shouldn't be in a mailbox, and I pulled out some baseball caps that had all this Arabic print on them, and this couple and their kids came up to me and started chastising me for having them because they thought it implied I was some sort of Al Qaeda supporter and I told them to go home to Alabama, which is where they claimed to have just moved...

What does it all mean, JRand???

You still have issues with never being selected first for any team sports, which made you feel like you were never good enough.

Thing is, since no-one is ever selected first except for the jerks who knew how to kiss up to the coaches, we all have the same issues.  This means that you are normal.  Whether you take this as a good thing or not is up to you.

RE: last night's SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE

I haven't caught up on yesterday's posts yet. So i don't know if anybody has talked about last night's show.

I think sabra and lacey will be safe for sure.

That means either sara or lauren have to go.

Personally i really dislike lauren. Her personality just doesn't do it for me. But while i like sara as a person a lot (she seems so sweet). I just don't think her dancing is that great.

As for the guys i love love love danny. And i really think the judges saying how he is the best dancer they've ever seen will help to stay.

I think neil getting to do mia michaels dance (and him parterned with lacey) will also allow him to stay.

To me it has to be down to pasha and dominic. I really think as nice as he is that dominic is just not as good as the others.

My pics are lauren and dom to go.

KIM NOVACK...I couldn't tell you whether she is a good actress or a bad one, because I've always fond her so stunningly beautiful and sexy and sexual, I just didn't care.  I have fond memories of her in THE EDDY DUCHIN STORY.

300...I liked it!  Given the TV promos, I had great fears that this was going to be another of those concussive, assaulting movie where you get bombarded with non-stop action and a nauseating moving camera that's so busy it never lets the eye rest on anything longer than two seconds and you can't delineate any of the details of the action.

But, on the contrary, the movie is clear and clean and the action filmed in such a way that you can figure out who's who even in the battle scenes.  Even the violence, which is occasionally graphic (heads being lopped off and the like) is so stylized and almost operatic that it's not off-putting and almost antiseptic.  It really does emulate the looks and style of its source...that of a graphic novel.  Quite well done and certainly better than the old Richard Egan 300 SPARTANS.

After I got in from lunch, I put on WILD HOGS.

I didn't see this in the theater, but it's a thoroughly mediocre, predictable comedy very much in the Disney tradition (e.g. hot marshmallow flung onto a tent, burning a hole in through the tent, dropping onto bedding inside which starts a fire and then one character trying to douse the fire with gasoline).

Nice to see Jill Hennessy, John C. McGinley, and Marisa Tomei in OK roles, but Ray Liotta plays the leader of a rough biker gang, and the entire time I'm watching him (trying to be tough and scary), I kept remembering him as a truly scary creep in SOMETHING WILD. In this, he's about as frightening as a slug.

I restarted WILD HOGS to listen to the director and screenwriter's commentary track. Of course, it's a love fest between them, their cast, crew, etc.

There's a making of documentary on there plus a featurette about how to persuade your wife to let you buy a motorcycle. There are also deleted scenes/outtakes and a separate section of bloopers. So all those features should keep me occupied tonight until MAD MEN comes on. (I'll record BURN NOTICE so I can see it tomorrow with no commercials.)

True, but that's too bad. Better thicker grass than me in the hospital with heat stroke.

Back from driving about halfway to Milwaukee and I'm proud to report that I found both of the places that I'd Mapquested before leaving Ohio  8)

At the Lang Factory Store, I bought little gifts for several family members and, for myself, a Reading Angel.  At the Lands' End Inlet Store, I found some sleepwear and a pair of my favorite old-style (before they started having them made in China) khaki pants.  I'm a happy shopper.

Went back to our apt. for lunch and to dress up a little for today's Evening Prayer service, at which DH Richard and his classmates will matriculate (not sure exactly what that means).  Afterwards, the school is throwing a Matriculation Celebration Dinner for students and spouses, so it must be something pretty special.

I started a chapter in HALF BLOOD PRINCE that I didn't get to finish this afternoon while waiting for my ride for lunch, so I'll head down and do that now.

I cleaned the bedroom before lunch, so that chore is taken care of.

BK:   I find it amusing that MMM (at FilmsScoreMonthlyMessageboard) is extolling the joys of "Ignore" when it is he, more than almost anyone, who needs to be "Ignored."

Seldom has anyone posted at FSM Message Board with so few clues about tact and approach.  That he presumes to tell people how and what to think is intolerable (and I've tasked him for it,  and am sure I am on his "Ignore" list because of it), but I will never "Ignore" him because whether he wants to read my posts or not, I'm still gonna give him what-for every time he deserves it!

Good Afternoon!

Back from SoHo... I met up with DR Jason, and he did some shopping at Uniqlo, and then we had lunch at the Spring Street Natural Cafe - at least I think that's what it was called.  A very good lunch.  We almost had lunch at 'wichcraft... We almost had lunch at Balthazar...  But then after walking around a bit, we settled on SSNC.

Then for dessert we headed over to Dean & DeLuca where I picked a "Sweet Basil" Doughnut from the Doughnut Plant.  I was just so intrigued by the "Sweet Basil" that I had to give it a try.  And it was good.  Just enough herb flavor to balance and complement the sugar glaze.  And the green tinge to the doughnut and the glaze was actually sort of pretty too.  And DR Jason liked the couple of crumbs I gave him also.  ;)

And we even spied Ms. Kelly Rippa heading into some storefront/apartment building too while walking around SoHo.  Alas, her husband, Mark Consuelos was not with her.  -However, I usually spy Mark at the Time-Warner Center at Columbus Circle - I believe he goes to the Equinox Gym there.  He looks good sweaty.  ;)

And speaking of the Time-Warner Center... After heading back uptown, Jason headed to work, and I headed to Whole Foods to pick up some groceries.  They have some pretty good sales right now on some of their organic produce.  The organic strawberries were actually cheaper than the conventional ones.  In any case, I bought blueberries.

And thus concludes my trekking around NYC for the day.  Well, for now at least.

I am missing SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, but since the judges have already decided that Doofus Danny will win, I am not sorry about it.

This week, they will probably let Dominic go.....the votes are manipulated, DR JENNIFER.....watch the disclaimers at the end of the program.....

And that left wing red pinko show they had last week ended it for me.

I liked last night's show.  However, I think "Doofus Danny" really did not get the Hip-Hop routine at all.  But, again, it's not up to me, so...

And did Mia's faux-military jacket and Wade Robson's "Peace" solo really cause that much "outrage"?  I haven't read any of the boards, so... ???  Nigel Lithgoe's "apology" sort of caught me off guard.

DR Jrand re: SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE

I am surprised that you think Danny is a doofus. I think he is the best dancer on the show.

I am still really confused about what you say is going on with the voting.

The judges don't have any say anymore.  But i find it so hard to believe that the show could get away with not having the actual lowest vote-getter go home. Wouldn't word get out?

It's been more rollercoaster stuff today - tonight I relax.  For now, I'm listening to Jobim with Nelson Riddle and the orchestra - very soothing.

No news from the actress, but I don't think she's gotten the CD yet.  My casting director asked me not to call her, that he wants to deal with it through her agent, and I'm beginning to not like being told this sort of thing.  So, I'll call her tomorrow no matter what - what I don't want to find out is that somehow some other NYMF show snagged her.  In fact, I'll have my friend Walter Willison call her right now.

Get a Mac.  ;)

Otherwise, I was a fan of McAfee too when I used my PC laptop.  What I liked most about McAfee is that they didn't "force" you to buy the whole bundle.  And their online Service/Security center was always easy to use.

As for a firewall, if you're using a wireless router in your home environment, there might be a basic firewall program bundled with the router software.  Otherwise, a basic encryption program should fit the bill.

And as DR Dan (the Man) mentioned, check with your ISP.  It may already be included in your service package.

Thank you, DR Jose!  The ceremony was quite nice, but it was very hot in the chapel - those poor folks garbed in vestments!  The matriculants signed their names in the Nashotah House registry and now I have "Put It in the Book"  from The Roar of the Greasepaint, the Smell of the Crowd running through my head.  DH Richard is now a Son of the House, which means (among other things) that he can be buried here if he so chooses.  I told him not to be in any hurry.

You're not hallucinating, DR JMK.  We were watching TV a few days ago, and we all went, "WHAT?!??!"  So, through the wonders of DVR, we were able to rewind right there on the spot, and, sure enough, "uncontrollable urges to gamble".  Who knew?  ::)

Right now the powers that be in Atlantic City, Reno, Las Vegas etc are trying to figure out how to introduce the stuff in to the local water supply

All this fuss because the ex-bridge (now raft) had been declared "structurally deficient" in a 1990 Federal Report.

Many blame throwers seem to think that responsible authorities should have closed the bridge at once and commenced repairs. Now congress is rushing forward to dump a quarter billion of my (well, our) tax dollars on the state to fix the bridge - whose demise casued no more loss of life than a good old fashioned multicar freeway collison.

What about the other 77,000 "structurally deficient" bridges on the same list?

Since François kept sending me back and forth to YouTube, I finally stayed there for a while visiting old and new favorites.  I finished up my visit there with a look back at Paul Potts who not only became the winner of "Britain's Got Talent", but also ended up taking the entire British nation by storm.

So, in case you are interested, here is Mr. Potts' final winning performance of "Nessun Dorma."

On second thought, I'd rather be fat and restless
Before I knew what My Alli was (the new over-the-counter weight loss product) a cashier caught me eyeballing a box proped near the register.

Cashier: "Oh no. You don't want that. It's only for people who are REALLY overweight."

This is America, I thought. Every woman thinks she's overweight.

Cashier: "I read the side effects. It gives you..." Here she gestures toward the seat of her pants, "...uncontrollable diarrhea. Like, you gas and stuff comes out."

What?! That's a foul reality. But people will go to extreme lengths to drop a few pounds (well, aside from walking 30 minutes a day).

Sure enough, I checked the My Alli side effects and they note, "You may feel an urgent need to go to the bathroom...it's probably a smart idea to wear dark pants, and bring a change of clothes with you to work."

Smarter still, don't take pills that make you soil yourself at the office.

Restless Leg Syndrome Gone, and So Are Your Savings
Not a day after the My Alli discovery, I saw another commercial about restless leg syndrome (RLS). This one, however, noted a newly discovered side effect: compulsive gambling.

I had to Google it. A Mayo Clinic study found a link between an RLS drug and compulsive gambling by people who previously didn't have a gambling problem.

Sounds backwards - you'd think people with RLS would pick up the habit prior to medication in order to give themselves something to do while they wait for their legs to relax. If I couldn't sleep or relax for days in a row I might pick up (a few more) bad habits.

Sure you might lose your savings, your job and your family to addition, but dang your legs feel good.

We have a major viaduct in Sioux City that is rated as "collapse imminent" or something like that and it's still open.  They are working on it right now After seeing photos of the underside on the news, I think I'll avoid it until it's repaired

Are we STILL on page nine?  Are the glory days gone?  Are the gory days here?  I'm watching film noir - it's one of those really annoying films where it's literally all shot on LA locations but you can NEVER tell where you are because the director's angles never reveal the actual location - so what's the point of being on location.  They're about to pull a heist at the Bank Of America in Glendale.  They've just discussed the getaway route - Brand to Colorodo to Verdugo blah blah blah - think we actually can see enough to recognize anything?  Nah.

My Catskills trip was the usual success - changing people's lives (so they tell me) through song improv.

Vixmom - If you see Such Good Friends without your 14-year-old, you'll be sorry she missed it.  There is nothing of a sexual nature in it, however, when people get angry they sometimes use certain words.  People will be talking about the causes of that anger, not the words the cause leads them to speak.  To say more might be giving too much away.

Very gratifying to learn people are buying tickets.  Those attending 4:30 performances will definitely be able to make a 7 o'clock curtain elsewhere.

I spent the first part of my evening watching the remaining bonus features on the WILD HOGS DVD set.

There's a pretty good "making of" featurette that covers the casting and the three big set pieces in the movie, but it ends very abruptly.

Post by: Matt H. on August 02, 2007, 08:30:28 PM
There's a section of three deleted scenes/outakes including an alternate ending (which I think would have worked better for the film, but the director's commentary explains why he thought differently).

There's a blooper reel that doesn't even run three minutes.

And there's a very brief throwaway featurette on how to persuade your wife to let you buy a motorcycle. Again, it doesn't last quite three minutes and is a pretty worthless extra.

I have a good many things on the DVR now, and I thought maybe I'd better watch something so I could erase it. I chose Jack Clayton's THE PUMPKIN EATER which I had never seen before.

It's a pretty astonishing movie with a script by Harold Pinter and a great cast including Anne Bancroft, Peter FInch, and James Mason. I was simply shocked to see Maggie Smith turn up in an "other woman" type of role. I hadn't even noticed her name in the credits, so her presence was really a welcome surprise.

I still have 20 minutes of the movie left, however. So, I didn't end up getting to erase anything, and I added another show - BURN NOTICE which I'll watch tomorrow.

Enjoying the show a lot, but I read in VARIETY that the second episode lost about 700,000 viewers from the premiere week. I hope the ratings don't continue to drop as I'm enjoying these characters, some of whom we've only just begun to explore.

What about the other 77,000 "structurally deficient" bridges on the same list?

der Brucer

Local media is already blaming Pawlenty and his reluctance to raise the gas tax which lags significantly behind ND (25 cents/gallon) Wisconsin at 31.

There are rural highways in parts of MN that are horrid to drive on and that is no joke. There is one state highway in northcentral MN that is is hazardous to a car's suspension.  I do have to say some of the ND highways are not great. I recall several years ago that they literally had to drag MN to the table to assist in helping to repair two bridges that span the Red River between Fargo and Moorhead. One of the bridges needed to be replaced and denizens were actually clamoring for somehing to be done for it was becoming dangerous to drive on it. ND had it  in the plan to replace it and actually due to MN reluctance to cough up its share they had to wait 5 additional years. It was a very dangerous bridge and I did my best to avoid it when possible before it was replaced. It was very narrow bridge and had issues with loosing chuncks of cement.

MN tends to take money earmarked for the rural areas and send it to the Twin Cities. needless to say the state of Minnesota has a mess when it comes to funding.

Sadly, it is an issue I think all states and the federal government needs to examine. The roads and other infrastructure are in a sorry state.

ND had it  in the plan to replace it and actually due to MN reluctance to cough up its share they had to wait 5 additional years. It was a very dangerous bridge and I did my best to avoid it when possible before it was replaced. It was very narrow bridge and had issues with loosing chuncks of cement.

I'd hazard a guess that there are more folks in Fargo who want to visit the Twin Cities than the other way around :D

Probably....

However it also shows the ongoing problems in Minnesota and its government in its reluctance to fund things adequately... However Pawlenty is willing to give big tax breaks to the super rich!

Yep,.... Just grumbling about the roads in MN and the MN governor named Pawlenty... He is not well liked at all in the rural areas.

Even though we've assigned ourselves a near-impossible task, I still am insisting that we go to "Hippiefest" tomorrow night. Our architect is my trock and roll enabler, so we have DH outnumbered.

So we shall see: The Turtles Featuring Flo & Eddie
The Zombies Featuring Colin Blunstone & Rod Argent
Mountain Featuring Leslie West & Corkey Laing
Mitch Ryder Bad Finger Featuring Joey Molland
Denny Laine, Former Leader Singer of The Moody Blues
Iron Butterfly
Country Joe McDonald

I am listening to Sylvia Telles - who was the first person to record Jobim songs, apparently.  She died very young in a car crash.  I like her very much.

I suspect he couldn't care less about the rubes - 60% of the population (read:voters) are the urban dwellers of the Twin Cities. The days of the agricultural/labor (DFL) power bloc are over.

Of course, if any of the seventeen GUESTS would get off their unseemly butt cheeks, we might actually reach page twelve.
