Yes, Larry did call and then I spoke to him once he got home.  He said he wasn't feeling well enough, that he hadn't really been feeling all that great since the morning.  Of course, he was greatly missed - BK of course had just seen him during the auditions, still DR Julie and (Kritzerland recording artist) Milla just adore Larry (as of course do Skip and I).

Six Trapped in Collapsed Utah Coal Mine
...
In 2007, inspectors have issued 32 citations against the mine, 14 of them considered significant.

Last month, inspectors cited the mine for violating a rule requiring that at least two separate passageways be designated for escape in an emergency.

It was the third time in less than two years that the mine had been cited for the same problem, according to MSHA records. In 2005, MSHA ordered the mine owners to pay $963 for not having escapeways and the 2006 fine for the same problem was just $60.

Overall, the federal government has ordered the mine owner to pay nearly $152,000 in penalties for its 325 violations with many citations having no fines calculated yet. Since January, the mine owner has paid $130,678 in fines, according to MSHA records.

Asked about safety, Murray told reporters: "I believe we run a very safe coal mine. We've had an excellent record."

Hmmm...seems "very safe" is in the eye of the beholder!

If the trapped miners are un-doumented immigrants, should tax-payer dollars be used to rescue them?

I'd hate to see a FOX news poll on that one!

Alright, MS TNT:

On last night's CLOSER, Brenda entered the boat wearing that wonderfully rediculous floppy white brim hat; we get a great shot of her peeling it off; however, she leaves the boat without it!

More on THE CLOSER:

In the boat scene (below decks), the director does a wonderful job of showing us the details of the scene, not just as evidence, but through Brenda's eyes as she hardens her resolve to find the culprit.

Good morning, all!  First of all, enormous apologies to DR FJL, Skip, DR Julie, the glorious-voiced Milla, and the glorious-voiced Guy Haines for skipping out on what I am certain was a glorious meal: not only is Skip Kennon a wonderful musician but he and FJL host the best salon in Manhattan.  My biggest mistake was not cancelling yesterday morning after I posted that I'd had a bad evening: I was so looking forward to auditions that I guess I thought the momentum of the day would carry me.  However, my health was acting up yesterday, and I spent a bit of time during the day running to and from the men's room.  And the room for the auditions was freezing: you could hang meat in that room. For a person who likes a cool temperature, I was quite cold by the end of the day.

Along with that, I can be a complete social boob, and DR FJL and I came to a complete misunderstanding of the time for arrivals and it was my mistake that I thought I was arriving around 6! At any rate I arrived 45 minutes early, not feeling great, but with nowhere to go but a restroom facility.  So I called Fred and Skip and cancelled, got into a taxi, and went home. I went to bed shortly thereafter.  I feel much better today, although my stomach still seems queazy, and my shame at upsetting several friends I hold quite dear wounds my heart.

DR Jason, your beautiful "Giants In The Sky" was quite wonderful!

On another note, BK, why didn't you work with the Fred applicants a bit to see what you could get out of them?  We certainly had the time for it during the day. When Houston Grand Opera did BABES IN TOYLAND, we lost our original leading man, George Dvorsky, and the young actor who replaced him gave a great audition and then moved progressively downhill as an actor.

I am really enjoying reading about THE BRAIN auditions!
Title: Re:HUMID TIMES THREE
Post by: Jennifer on August 07, 2007, 06:53:34 AM
I really wanted to post something. But now i've forgotten! Oh well.

In other news, i saw HAIRSPRAY the movie last night and loved it!

It was very bizarre because five minutes before the movie there were only 6 people in the audience. But then by the time the movie started it was quite full!  I guess with all the commercials and previews there is a lot of time to get into the theatre.

Since the movie was a musical we saw a lot of musical themed previews, including the Beatles/Julie Taymor movie (looks interesting). And Enchanted (the half cartoon princess movie), which looks cute.

Back to the movie, I LOVED niki!  She was a wonderful lead!  And i actually really loved amanda bynes too (as her best friend).

I thought zach efron was quite good. And i always enjoy brittany snow (as amber).

Christopher Walken was okay. He seemed so old to me. I"m not sure exactly the range of ages that have played this role.

As for John Travolta, i thought he was good.  But not great. There are so many actors i think could have done just as good a job or better. But i do think he was fun to watch and sort of sweet.

The 2 hours just flew by. They are so lucky they found the right lead. That is what made the move for me.

One more thing about the movies. They have the most interesting treats now.  I just can't believe all the things they serve.

I really don't like eating during the movie or before.  But they had these coupons in the paper for free food. There were coupons for free: milkshake, beavertail, pogo, chicken fingers, fries, onion rings, spring rolls.

I'm sure there was more.

It says one coupon per person, but they did not mark our tickets.

Before the movie my mom had a milkshake and beavertail.

And then after the movie we had chicken fingers and oriental springrolls. The two things i had were very good!

I'm surprised they keep having these coupons every few days. And this is not some dump theatre. IT's one of the biggest in montreal!

The Light Opera of Manhattan (LOOM) version ran for years between the 1970s and the company's closing.  There was even a published vocal selections, new book and lyrics by Alice Hammerstein (Oscar II's sister, I believe), and a totally sugared and tarted up version bearing no remeblance to the original.

Speaking of Toyland, I have a meeting there this morning with Miles Kreuger's assistant Eric around 11 am, so I have to pack up and head out.

DR JRand56, the actor in question from the HGO production continues to work: I believe he was the Raoul for a while - may still be - in Broadway in POTO.  He was a friendly and handsome young man with a wonderful voice, but he wasn't a great actor although he gave a great audition.

DR Jose, take care of that vocal score!

Yesterday is the first Aug 6 in my memory when no publuc notice was made of the anniversary of the attack on Hiroshima.

When word of the attack filtered back to the US, there was an initial presumption that the war was over. I found this event most distressing - I had been promised a pony ride on my Birthday (8 Aug), and the Seaside Park, NJ summer concessions all closed for the celebration.

Imagine what the news coverage would have looked like given today's technology. In those good old days, the only moving picture testimonials available were those provided by the motion picture houses, many days after an international event. (Of course this was a decided improvment over our early days of Independence  when news of the Napoleonic Wars had to travel by ship to Philadelphia.)

Imagine: Napoleon Loses at Waterloo - film at 11!

Yesterday I mentioned a couple of favorite side dishes which happened to be fried foods so I won't repeat those.

The best fried chicken I've ever had (other than my mom's) is served right here in Charlotte at a place called Price's Chicken Coop. I'm sure it's a cardiologist's dream for folks to get chicken from there (it's a walk-in/take out place, not a sit-down restaurant). The best chicken I've ever tasted.

A family-style restaurant near me called Tryon House makes the best fried squash I've ever had. I always get it when I go there.

I've still never had fried Snicker bars and other fried candy bars. I'd love to try them some time, but so far in my life, the opportunity hasn't presented itself for me to have one.

elmore brings up an interesting point - it's something I rarely do in auditions, unless I think someone is really right for it, and then I might say something.  But, after having to really, really work so hard with the last Fred, I just don't want to cast someone who basically isn't what I'm looking for - while I might be able to get them to do what's necessary, they're still not necessarily going to be right for it.

As for the Topic of the Day... Well...

I do like French Fries, but I usually opt for Onion Rings if given the choice.  The District Chophouse in Washington, DC, has great ones!  And I've never been able to finish one of their orders even though I've wanted to.  (My apologies for the dangling participle.)  And there was a place in Richmond called "The Village" which had great onion rings - they were made in house and not from Sysco.  Alas, they eventually switched to the pre-made frozen one, and they were never the same.

Fried Chicken:
Gus's Fried Chicken in Memphis, TN - Their chicken is marinated and then just given a coating of seasoned flour before going into the hot oil.  And each order is cooked to order.  Soooooo good.
Frenchy's Fried Chicken in Houston, TX - A kind of spicy fried chicken, and more of a batter-dipped type.  When I first tried it, I went ahead and got the three-piece combo, and by the time I had finished my food, I found myself wishing I had ordered the four or five-piece combo.  It was that good.  And the sides were killer too!
Mert's Heart and Soul in Charlotte, NC - Whenever I play the fall SETCs, I always make sure to have at least one meal there.  The fried chicken is good and basic.  And when you get them served with waffles and maple syrup.. :)  -Mert's also has great fried okra and hush puppies.

Fried Pickles (a.k.a. Frickles) - The first time I had them was at the Duke University Dining Hall.  They had a whole "Fried Food Bar" on Fridays... "What are those?" -Fried pickle spears.  "Really? OK, I'll try them."  -And I continued to try them each time they were on the line.  Those were batter dipped spears, but since that first time I've had a couple of different variations.  Some places - like the Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville, TN - fry pickle slices that are basically just coated in season flour.  However, Galaxy Diner in Richmond, VA, used to make some incredible dipped-and-breaded ones in-house, but the owners switched to food-service ones after the first year since there kitchen staff could not keep up with the demand.  Of course, once they switched to frozen, the orders went down, so... Ah, well.  -Spanky's BBQ in Times Square is where I currently get my Frickle Fix.

I have your cell.

And just looking ahead to tomorrow... Were you planning on having another mini-gathering tomorrow night at Joe Allen?  If so, reservations may be needed unless you're planning on meeting there after the pre-theatre rush.

As for the Topic of the Day... Part 2... ;)

Shrimp Chips - Those "pieces of glass" that puff up when you place them in the hot oil.  My parents used to make them a lot at parties when I was younger.  Eatery here in NYC serves them in place of bread on the tables.

Hot Dogs - Yes, hot dogs.  I haven't had them often, but I have had deep-fried hot-dogs before.  Amazing stuff.  Criff Dogs in the East Village specializes in the deep-fried dog.

And then there's the whole slew of "State Fair Food" - Deep-fried Oreos, Mars Bars, Snickers Bars, Twinkies, Mac'n'Cheese Balls, Cheesecake Slices (or Nuggets), Cheese-On-A-Stick, etc., etc., etc.  :)

As for the Topic of the Day... Part 3...

For the English treatment, so to speak, of All Things Deep-Fried, the CHIPSHOP (http://www.chipshopnyc.com/) in Park Slope (Brooklyn) has all sorts of goodies.  Heck, you can even get a Deep-Fried Chip Butty - two pieces of buttered white bread that surround a mound of "chips", then that whole mass is dipped in their chip batter and fried.  -Can you say carbs?  ;)

And for dessert, you can have a Deep Fried Banana with Chocolate Sauce, or a Twice-Fried Cherry Pie.  Or you could select something from their "Fried Chocolate" menu: Mars, Bounty, Twinkies, Twix, Snickers and/or Reece's Peanut Butter Cups.

-And if you don't feel like venturing into Brooklyn, there's also A Salt & Battery (http://www.asaltandbattery.com/menu) in Greenwich Village.  -Which is right next to Tea & Sympathy (http://www.teaandsympathynewyork.com/home.php).

Topic of the Day:  French fries...of course, and onion rings.  I went to Applebee's on Sunday and had their new crunchy onion rings appetizers.  They were very good!  They came with a horseradishy-barbeque-type sauce.  Yummy!  Skipper's fish and chips are probably the only real fish that I like (I don't know if you can consider McDonald's Filet-O-Fish as "real" fish ::) even though, I'm sure it is).

And many, many years ago, there was a local restaurant called Crackers that had deep fried pickle spears.  Those were so good!

And I do like Krispy Kreme donuts! :D

I can't remember the actual topic of the day (I read the notes nearly 12 hours ago), but I'm getting the jist of it...

I love fried foods. There, I've said it. I'm from Kentucky, so we fry everything. Not to cast doubts upon the quality of Skip's fried chicken, but my dad's fried chicken is by far my favorite on earth. Maybe it's the ingredients he uses, but I suspect it's more than that. In any case, his is my favorite by a long-shot. He used to be the international quality control manager for KFC (in the early 80's), and he's one of the few people in the world to know the 11 secret herbs and spices in the Colonel's secret recipe. And he's a fantastic cook. So is my mom. Her mac & cheese is amazing, as is her homemade creamed corn. YUM! Luckily, I was able to partake of most of my favorite home-cooked foods while I was there just a couple of weeks ago. :)

I requested a book to be sent to my local branch via the library's website. When I look up my account to check the status of the book, it says "COMMITTED - CANNOT BE CANCELLED." Am I to assume that they mean the book is there waiting for me, or does that just mean the request went through and the book is in transit?? I don't want to walk to the library in this heat just to find out that the book isn't there...

Oh, my. I forgot corn dogs. I do love them as I walk around the grounds of the State Fair. I also love Onion Rings. I haven't had them for a long time. They come as a garnish on the burger at our local diner but they aren't very good and we haven't been to the diner for quite a while anyway.

I don't usually ask for recipes, but, JASON, your mother's mac & cheese is one I'd like to have. Any chance of posting it? Approximations will do.

I cannot tell you how ugly it is out there.  I had my first meeting, but it made sense to come back to the apartment rather than try to kill two hours in this heat.

Meeting was fine, although I'm just not thrilled with the way things are being presented to me, and the pressure I'm getting to just make offers without giving things thought.  It's fine if I know the people, but not if I don't, and not if I'm not sure about it even IF I know them.  While I suppose we could use one final strong burst of excellent vibes and xylophones for the actress, I'm starting to get annoyed about what should have been a simple offer and acceptance that has now dragged on almost six days.  The latest from the agent is that she hasn't heard back from her client, which I find completely hard to believe, given the phoner than I had with her client last week.

But, one way or the other, we either have her by the end of the day or I'm moving on - to whom is up in the air, but we have some names that I think would be fine.

And congrats to DR Michael Shayne for losing 66 pounds!! I know how hard it's been to lose 45... How are you doing it? I honestly think Weight Watchers is the only way I'd have lost it... I couldn't have done it by myself.

I had an insulin problem that made me balloon up. Anyone who was at the reading for Writer's Block in NYC can attest to that.

So it has been a combination of exercise (I walk) medicine for keeping the insulin down. On recommendation form my doctor I started with South Beach Diet. I grew tired of it. Went on my own and mantained. I am now on the Nutrisystem and have lost an additional 8 pounds. My first goal and I think it is realistic is to get down to 192 pounds. I would utlimately like to lose from that another 20lbs. I am in no rush. This time next year I will be very happy to be at 192.

I have also gone down from a 48 waist to a 36 waist. Next goal is 32 waist.

See? I knew it'd be a smart idea to check with you librarian types before I schlepped over there!

DR Michael Shayne: Congrats to you and best of luck with continued success. I am hovering right around your goal weight right now and I could stand to lose another 10-15 lbs., as well. I started out with a 36-inch waist and am now down to a 30, which is the smallest I can recall being in my adult life.If you find yourself getting stuck in a plateau, look into joining Weight Watchers. It's a very easy plan, allowing you to eat whatever foods you want, and I'd venture to say it's cheaper as you don't have to buy any pre-prepared foods. They've worked wonders for me! Still, stick with what works for you. Doesn't matter how it comes off, as long as it continues to come off for as long as you want it to... :)

Well, I must finish getting myself ready to meet DR Jose at Macy's for a loverly salad. I haven't eaten a thing today (bad Jason!), so I am much looking forward to it...

We now have an offer out to the actor I really liked yesterday, because after talking to the actor we first offered it to (which I'll tell you about later), it became very apparent that it was too much of a nightmare logistically for him to do it.  Of course, it's never simple with our casting guy, so he's made the "offer" to the good actor, but he's now is a casting session from three to nine - certainly I haven't gotten that kind of time from him.  I'm going to be discussing the situation at our production meeting, because frankly I'm tired of beating my head against the wall.  I get arguments about everything, and, unless I'm mistaken, this guy is working for ME and my show, not the other way around.  But, it doesn't help that he's casting eleven other NYMF shows - who knows where I am in his food chain, but I suspect at the bottom.  I also suspect that every time I give him a name, he pitches it to other shows.  Can't be sure, but boy, I gotta tell you.

I finished the last three episodes of THE TICK. Not a bad little cartoon show and like ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE, kids can watch it on one level and adults on another (but, of course, it doesn't have a quarter of the brains of ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE).

One episode in particular was hilarious. A prize dolphin is kidnapped from a Sea World-type theme park, and it's up to the Tick to rescue it. Turns out, the dolphin engineered its own escape and now goes by the name of Mr. Fin. He speaks a la Kirk Douglas. I was laughing my head off all through this 22 minute episode.

Back briefly before dinner.  Production meeting went very well - lots discussed and I love our design team and tech director.  I've got to say if I'd known how difficult NYMF was  in terms of not really helping and making everything a hurdle, I might not have done it.  But, we're here and we'll get through it.  You would be shocked to know of some of the things we have to deal with.

And I walked in to find the AC unit not working.

Good Evening!

Back from Macy's...  DR Jason and I met up for a late lunch/early dinner.  I had the burger.  Jason did not have the salad.  ;)

And we split the Caramelized Banana Bread Pudding for dessert.  It was actually pretty good, although some extra whipped cream would have made it perfect.  ;)

DR Cillaliz - hope you feel better after some comfort food.  I'm about to go home, too, in 100o weather that they say feels like 113o  :P

It's supposed to stay in the 90's until next Wednesday.

Enough to make anybody sick.

Thanks DR Ginny. I think it's a combination of the weather, working until I'm exhausted, not sleeping well and well just everything.  I didn't have any goofy dreams this afternoon and hopefully I won't tonight.  I sort of feel like I may be getting a cold, so I'm taking Airborne. Hopefully that will help.

The chicken and noodles was great.  I had one of those roasted chickens from the grocery store a week or two ago and had frozen all the left over chicken. So I used that, frozen egg noodles, chicken broth, frozen peas and some spices. I let it simmer until it was just like I wanted it and boy was it good.   Now I have left overs. I'll have a little more later and will have it to take to the office tomorrow.

I've got all the ingredients that I need for der Brucer's birthday dinner tomorrow.

Leg of lamb, to be roasted.

Beets, also to be roasted.

Cute little grape tomatoes, to be made into a side dish.

Cute little Yukon Gold potatoes, to be roasted.

And rosemary, scallions, garlic, mint.  I couldn't find any fresh oregano, will have to cope with dried.

Tonight, I'm taking it easy with a pizza shell and lots of veggies to top it.  Although I may get the beets and tomatoes prepped in advance.

Jose, as you may have surmised from my posts, I'm severely less than thrilled about our guy and have, in fact, had a long meeting about what he's doing with our general managers, who are majorly pissed right now.  I"m probably going to let them deal with him from now on.  As to tomorrow, I know we start the dance stuff at ten-thirty at Ripley-Grier and if I remember correctly, they're going to use the CD for those auditions, as the room they booked has no piano.  So, your original call time (I presume around noon) is probably good and we're probably in the same room at Pearl.

Dear DR SWoody,

Please post your recipe for roasted beets.
Not really a recipe, more along the lines of a method.

After cutting off the leaves to about 1 inch from the beets, I drizzle them with oil, add a little salt (kosher), and wrap them in foil.  I then place them in a 400 oven and let them roast for about an hour or so, until tender.  Just how long depends on the size of the beets, of course (the bunch I picked up today has one beet that is absolutely huge, so that one will take longer).

I let them cool a little bit, then rub the skins off the beets with paper towels.  The beets can then be sliced, diced, and dressed as you like.  I usually add a bit of butter and vineger, but orange juice is a good complement as well.

I think roasting them works better than boiling, since boiling saps away some of the flavor.

Noel, is your DW Joy helping out with your casting or is Geoff doing it himself?

Joy has contributed at a couple of our meetings, and held my hand through many hours of EPAs, but she's far too busy casting other shows (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels et al.) and, besides, Such Good Friends is not the sort of show she specializes in.  It's what Geoff specializes in.  That's how it works in offices: one casting associate with too much on the plate, hands project off to a more experienced casting associate who has the time to handle it.  Is there any other way?

Steamed, broiled, baked?

Butter and cracked black pepper?
Healthy squeeze of lemon?
A nice dose of good Balsamic vinegar?
Gated good parmesan cheese?

Boiled, mashed, with melted Velveeta >:(

Outer, bitter leaves peeled off. Stems cut off. Cut in half with olive oil and spices brushed over them and then baked in a convection oven until CARMELIZED. Oh so goooood!

Never heard from Jose today, so didn't meet Baayork Lee - maybe next time.  Also, Jose and elmore should check their e-mails.  Our crack casting director sent out the sched at about ten this evening.  He also made no response to my long e-mail where I laid out what I was feeling, nor did he respond to my general manager.  The latter will be taking over casting duties if this guy keeps doing what he's doing.  No excuse for it - once again we have no answer on the actress situation and I'm afraid it's not going to be settled (whatever the casting is) while I'm here, which is really infuriating.  Well, he'll be seeing me bright and early in the morning, and if I were him I know I'd try to have real good news for me.

What is fried beavertail?

From Wikipedia:

Quote
Also try the tasty beaver tail, a doughy, deep-fried pastry associated with Ottawa, although a number of places claim to have created it. It's available in sweet and savory versions, topped with cinnamon, sugar, icing sugar, etc. In the winter, many places will offer it on the canal. During the summer, the only place downtown to offer it is in the Byward Market on George St. There is a variety of toppings and the taste of the beaver tail arguably stands out more with the classic sugar & cinnamon. However, the locals' favourite is the kilaloe sunrise, a topping of sugar and lemon juice.

*And if you happen to find yourself down at Epcot, there's a small booth in the Canadian section that sells them.  I would get them topped with Nutella.
