Well, you've read the notes, the notes were Wilted, and now it is time for you to post until the Wilted cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: TURBID!
-
A/C notwithstanding, I am literally drenched with sweat right now, and sticky, too. How nauseating.
-
Seven more postings to go - someone take a snapshot.
-
I hope I get SOME sleep this evening.

Will we never get to page two?

Congrats bk on your new plateau!

Happy Birthday DerBrucer!
I hope you have a wonderful day full of fun and surprises!

Had a lovely evening...
I went to a BBQ to celebrate DBF's successful defense of his dissertation in the Communication program at NDSU. He is now a Doctor!
He did quite well!
I thought I would post a picture of the proceedings. It was a fun evening with much chatter and laughing about interesting travails and an ensuing discussion about a man who disrobed at a panel at National Communications Association convention. At the cookout were two of his advisors on his doctoral committee: Michelle Shumate, Amy O'Connor, DBF Jon, Me (I apologize about how I look, I am not what you call photogenic), the chair of the department Paul Nelson and his lovely and very talented wife, Judy Pearson.
-
Congratulations to Dakota's DBF's Successful Dissertation Defense!! ;D

So, someone take a snapshot so we'll have a lovelier than lovely record.
And here it is...a little blurry, but it's official! Congratulations, BK!! ;D

Happy Birthday, Dear Der Brucer!
-
Congratulations to BK on achieving 30,000 posts!
-
Six-thirty and I'm up. Why? Thunder, lightning, huge rainstorm = can't sleep. Five hours isn't quite enough but I guess it will have to do, and I guess I'll have to catch up on plane and on Friday.
-
The good news about being in an apartment rather than a hotel is that I merely opened the hall closet and there was a lovely, large umbrella. I know getting a cab will be impossible, so I'm hoping this umbrella will keep me nice and dry in my twenty block walk today. Then again, this is NY and the whole rainstorm may be done before I leave.
-
I'm the only one in the jernt. Of course I am - all the sane people are asleep.
-
All the sane people without cats who think it's funny to wake up humans at ungodly hours of the morning are asleep
-
Happy Birthday Der Brucer!!!!
-
Well, They woke me up about an hour ago. I shut them out of the bedroom, then it got hot in the bedroom, so I opened the door. They proceeded to go downstairs and make as much noise as they could - literally moving a chair across the wood floor. So, I gave in and got up. NOW they are quiet. CATS!
-
At least I did get some sleep and I"m up early enough to get ready and have time for coffee. So i think I'll do that
-
What a downpour!!!
When I got to work I was soaked and I only walk a half a block from the apartment to the office.
-
Good morning Ben!
-
Unfortnuately the rain will not cool things off. It's supposed to be worse today than yesterday, 95 degrees and equal humidity. Yesterday turned out to be not as bad, even though it was hot, it didn't reach the heights predicted.
-
As predicted, the rainstorm lasted less than ninety minutes and seems to be done. I hope so, anyway. I laid back down for a while but didn't really sleep.
-
Last night after dinner (Shepherds Pie and a tasty green salad) we walked over to
71 Irving Place (http://www.irvingfarm.com/index.cfm?c=3&s=1&pg=irvingplace.cfm)
a pleasant tea and coffee bar for dessert. I had Chauncey's Magic Bar which is a blondie with lots of extra stuff like chunks of chocolate, mini marshmallows, pecans and caramel and plain iced tea. Anthony had an Oreo Cheesecake Bar which sounds better than it tasted. The cheesecake wasn't very good and the whole thing was kind of bland. His lemonade was very good though.
We then walked over to Barnes and Noble and browsed around and found out that the original version of Rebecca (one of Anthony's favorite movies) is currently out of print. There are VHS versions available on line but the DVD with all sorts of extras is not on the market right now. His library on Long Island has it on DVD which is how he saw all the extras and he wanted a copy for his own. Oh, well.

I missed Cilla. Hi, even though you're gone. I got distracted and didn't see the greeting.
-
Good Morning Larry, Tom and Bruce.
-
And now I must go for real.
-
Good morning, Ben, Lar, Noel, and Dakota.
-
People are here, but people aren't posting.
-
I do hope it doesn't rain anymore until after I'm back in LA. I'll probably bring the umbrella just in case.
-
Only 9,993 posts to my next large plateau.
-
Good morning, bk, good casting vibes.
-
71 Irving Place (http://www.irvingfarm.com/index.cfm?c=3&s=1&pg=irvingplace.cfm) a pleasant tea and coffee bar
I know it well, and glad you guys made it part of your anniversarial experience - congratulations, btw.
I like good coffee - sweets not so much - and am constantly on the prowl for independently owned and run coffee bars like 71 Irving Place. And I love Irving Place, the street - a delightful bit of American and literary history; love to walk its length, go around Grammercy Park and back whenever I'm at the Lee Strasburg school. What I'm not fond of are national chains that all look the same and serve coffee that doesn't taste good. My producer likes to meet at one on Times Square. Which one of Times Square's six, you ask? The one nobody knows about, across from the Lyceum. Ick.
So much depends upon casting. (Looked like I was going to launch into a William Carlos Williams poem there for a moment.) There's pressure to go after stars, because when certain people see that a star is in a show, they assume the show must be good. Those Unseemly Trivia Answers give the lie to that. Stars can take their sweet time answering you, or be plucked away by a TV or movie project. Your postcards should list your cast, so there's pressure to complete your cast before printing those. NYMF pressures you, because they want to hold a press conference in which they can mention - you guessed it - stars. My entire score is currently in keys I can sing. I figure once the show is cast, I'll change everything into keys that are good for them. And with so many duets, trios and quartets, it's hard to accommodate everyone. Especially the everyone you haven't met.
-
Good morning, all! DR Ben, that out-of-print Criteron edition is going on eBay and Amazon.com for over $115.00! I'll keep an eye out for it. You might check at Academy and see if they have a copy for sale. I'll also look around for a used copy.
I too will be at audiitons all day today, and I am looking forward to it. I hope the room is warmer.
Yesterday, after a lovely meeting with Eric Davis, Miles Kreuger's assistant, and a tech meeting with BK and his mighty team, I came home to find two neat emails: inquiry about restoring an early Rodgers & Hart show and a request for a meetng about a British big-band musical, which sounds like fun. I have my fingers crossed that both come through in the next few months.
I also got an email from our E&T DR Cason, who arrives tonight, and I wil see his show this Saturday. I have to get tickets for Skip's one-act musical, and I want to see David Gebel's show next week with our mutual friends, DR Ben and Baxter. It's a busy time!

Names always help shows, but I won't do it just to do it. My casting guy has asked me about several big names, and I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole or a five foot Czech because they would not serve the show well. It took me a few days to wrap my mind around the actress we've been waiting on, but I finally did because I realized she'd serve the show well as an actress and singer - the name is a bonus. Obviously I felt no compunction to replace Cason or Alet with names, and believe me, for those two parts I could probably have gotten anyone I wanted, especially given the number of people I've worked with. Same with Benjamin Clark - but I'm loyal to those who deliver and there wasn't a question about them coming with the show.
-
I wonder if the rain cooled things down a little?
-
In honor of bk's show (THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X), Fred's show (THE LAST STARFIGHTER), and Noel's show (SUCH GOOD FRIENDS); I have decided to take the day off from work.
Actually one thing has nothing to do with the other; but, at least, I got a plug in for all three shows in NYMF.

I didn't stick around. I got dressed and left for work....stopping on the way to pick up some water for Nadia and I and a couple bottles of Gatorade to keep in the office fridge in case my headache comes back

WHOA!!
I guess it did storm out there for a while. So much so that a bunch of the subway lines got messed up. Some are not running.
www.mta.info
DR elmore et al - Check the service advisories before heading out. They're advising everyone to take the bus. Apparently, there's no 1 Train service right now. And a bunch of the other lines are either detoured or stopped now too due to flooding.
-
I'm not sure the best way to get downtown for the dance call... I just saw on the news that NYC officials are urging commuters to avoid the subways for the time being- whatever that means.
-
Or check this article out for the MTA service disruptions:

I guess my plan of taking the 1 is out. A friend called me to let me know that it took an hour and half to get from here to 59th on the A...

I'm not sure either. And I'm guessing a LOT of people will be late this morning.
-
Well, I guess I should get ready to head downtown... Especially since I have no idea just how or how long it's going to take to get there.

I can't get onto the MTA page because the server is too busy.

Yes, the three Criterion DVDs of Hitchcock's classics REBECCA, SPELLBOUND, and NOTORIOUS are all out of print now and the rights have reverted to MGM (I think). Allegedly, there will be new special editions of those three films coming in the next year.

I should be able to get through the two special features on the second disc in the CRIA CUERVAS set which will leave tonight free to watch BROTHERS GRIMM on Blu-ray disc. That should be fun to see in high def.

ANother new episode of RESCUE ME tonight, too. Did Tommy drop the baby in the river (which he was about to do at the end of last week's episode)? We'll find out tonight.

It is right next to Friend of a Farmer, a wonderful place for brunch or dinner. It's the ground floor of an old brownstone which, according to this reference on the Web, was converted to "furnished rooms" in the early 20th Century.
Nos. 65 and 71 Irving Place are two survivors from a row of four late Greek Revival houses that once also included Nos. 67 and 69 Irving Place. The facades of these simple but well-proportioned brick buildings are articulated by crisp rectilinear openings that become smaller on each successive floor. at the rooflines are projecting cornices. At No. 65, the stoop was removed and the first floor and basement converted for commercial use in 1914 by architect Harriston G. Wiseman. No. 71 retains much of its original form, including its stoop. In the early 20th century the house was converted into furnished rooms. Residents included George Axelrod, author of the Broadway hit The Seven Year Itch, and the prominent Socialist, Norman Thomas.
I, like Noel, love the neighborhood. It's like stepping back in time to walk on Irving Place. I recently finished reading the Jack Finney book, Time and Again (which our own FJL's Skip musicalized) and much of it takes place in a brownstone on 19th and Irving Place. The entire neighborhood, including
The Players Club (http://www.theplayersnyc.org/)
at 16 Gramercy Park is so special. Walking there on a quiet spring morning or a snowy afternoon, with the flakes drifting down into Gramercy Park is just lovely.

Thanks for the info on 71 Irving Place, Ben. Looks great. I've had brunch next door at Friend of a Farmer a few times, although not recently. It's a great block. The official Gramercy Park block - surrounding the actual park where the Players Club is located, is quite beautiful, and a very desirable address in the City. An apartment there comes with it's own key to the Park - very exclusive.

Off to clean the theatre and have ONE MORE rehearsal before we open tomorrow.....
Everyone stay cool.
It is now 91 degrees here heading for 97!
Final rehearsal vibes to JRand. The photos are wonderful.

Der Brucer - Skip wrote the songs for teh musical Time and Again (he was going by the name Walter then). The reviews at the Old Globe in San Diego were promising but not ideal, so it took several years to get to Manhattan Theatre Club in NYC, where the reception was (to say the least) much less promising overall.
Here's the Variety review from the Old Globe.

And here's Ken Mandelbaum's review of the New York production of Skip's musical of Time and Again:
http://www.broadway.com/gen/Buzz_Story.aspx?ci=4675
Brantley in the Times was even more negative then Mandelbaum, so I hope no one has the bad taste to post Brantley's review here! :)
But here's Mandelbaum's discussion of the differences between San Diego and NYC:
Time Tries Again
by Ken Mandelbaum
Review: TIME AND AGAIN
For those like myself who can't resist staring at old photographs of New York and longing to actually be back there, Jack Finney's novel Time and Again is pretty much irresistible.
But there's a catch to adapting it to another medium. The novel has a nifty plot, involving advertising illustrator Si Morley, who, both out of a fascination for sights and styles of earlier times and a desire to solve a mystery in his girlfriend's family, joins an experimental government project on time travel that sends him back to Manhattan in 1882. But just as important as the plot is the book's vivid evocation of New York in that era, the lengthily detailed descriptions bolstered by photo illustrations. The latter third of the novel is action-packed suspense and boasts a tour-de-force section describing a conflagration and its aftermath.
Because of this, the novel is perhaps a more natural property for film than the stage; a movie might be able to recreate the period in a way no theatrical production could. But even a film couldn't capture the first-person voice of the novel, which allows us to see things in both eras through Si's viewpoint and perceptive commentary.
The stage life of the musical version by Jack Viertel (book) and Walter Edgar Kennon (music and lyrics) extends back to readings in 1993, but the show had its official premiere in 1996 at San Diego's Old Globe, directed by Jack O'Brien (The Full Monty), starring Howard McGillin and Rebecca Luker, and announced for an opening at the Martin Beck Theatre. The Old Globe version made a number of significant alterations to its source. To cite just a couple: While the mystery that provokes Si's journey belonged in the novel to Kate, at the Old Globe it involved Si's grandfather. In the San Diego show, villain Jake Pickering dies in the fire, while in the novel he lives to assume the identity of the man he was blackmailing.
But for the most part, the Old Globe version was faithful to the novel's action, and the result was, if not disastrous, plodding and overloaded with plot. The reason why the musical didn't vanish at that point was that, in addition to the appeal of its source, the show came to life on a number of occasions thanks to some ravishing songs, most notably a duet for the two women in Si's life, "Who Are You Anyway?," and the near-title song ("Time and Time Again"), the kind of soaring love duet for which one searches in vain in contemporary opera.
After further development in workshop, Time and Again is at last having its New York premiere at Manhattan Theatre Club's intimate City Center Stage II, and that's part of the problem with the current production. Kennon's score is old-fashioned, lush, and full-bodied, the sort of thing that demands what it had at the Old Globe, an orchestra boasting 20 musicians. While the music has for the MTC version been attractively arranged for two pianos, it's a score that cries out for the full orchestration that would match the kind of operatic singing required of several of the principals.
Ten of the songs heard at the Old Globe have been retained, with three or four new ones introduced. But the score has undergone far less alteration than the book: While the new Time and Again retains the central time travel theme, the blackmail plot, and other elements from the novel, it features what is in many respects a new story that deviates sharply from the source. Si is now a partner with Kate in an ad agency, his recent promotion owed to the campaign he created for a new fragrance, its logo the haunting face of a 19th century woman. Where Si once agreed to his journey in order to uncover the story behind a mysterious letter, he's now persuaded to journey back when government scientist Dr. Danziger produces a portrait of the same woman's face, drawn a century ago by none other than Si himself. The face in the portrait will, of course, come to life as heroine Julia, the woman he meets and falls in love with during his trip to the past.
With more echoes of Brigadoon and Portrait of Jennie than before, the new version is also much more interested in the social conditions of the earlier era, with Julia, demure at the Old Globe, now more complex and assertive, a fighter for civil rights and women's suffrage, a believer in democracy as symbolized by the Statue of Liberty, but pragmatic about her economic status and the choices she must make because of it. (One charming Old Globe song, "Fairy-Tale Life," is gone, as it wouldn't have fit the new Julia.) Wholly new characters include the operetta soubrette who is Dr. Danziger's grandmother, thus explaining his possession of the old portrait. (Note that the program credits James Hart with "additional story material," although Hart gets no program bio.)
Some of this is for the better; it's nice that Si now has a more romantic motivation for his journey. But the show remains overplotted, the first half hour still discouraging. As at the Old Globe, the experiment is set up too hastily; where the novel had the luxury of expending many pages describing its modus operandi, it must be taken care of in minutes here, so we never fully buy into it.
In addition to depriving the score of its richness, the new production--with a cast of 15 in a small playing area with the audience on three sides--can't compete with the Old Globe version, much less the novel, in terms of conveying the reality of the past. While director Susan H. Schulman supplies a fairly intricate staging for such a limited space and the sets (Derek McLane) and costumes (Catherine Zuber) are attractive given the budget, one isn't transported the first time Si manages the trick of leaving the present, or when Si brings Julia with him into the modern world.
But no show with as many lovely songs can be a washout, and in addition to the duets noted above, there are big, aria-like outbursts ("Who Would Have Thought It?") and quieter things ("She Dies") for Si; fine numbers for the heroine ("What of Love?," "I Know This House"); a creepy musical scene ("Carrara Marble") for the villain and his victim; and some adept pastiche for the musical show in which the actress is appearing.
With Joseph Kolinski the only holdover from the Old Globe, the cast works hard, with a fair amount of doubling. Laura Benanti is an enchanting singing actress; if the role of Julia doesn't allow her to cut loose and have fun as she did in The Sound of Music or Wonderful Town, she's a pleasure to watch, a leading lady here to stay. In the demanding role of Si, Lewis Cleale is at times stiff or nerdy, but is mostly appealing and in good voice.
I can't seem to get enough of Julia Murney's singing. If her third consecutive Manhattan Theatre Club musical doesn't give her nearly as much to sing as The Wild Party (what show ever will?), it offers more than she had in A Class Act, and her duet with Benanti on "Who Are You Anyway?" is the evening's high point. As Kate, Murney shines in her good solo ("The Right Look") and demonstrates a flair for delivering a droll remark, winning exit applause for her final one.
Lauren Ward is at her most aggressive, but it's appropriate for the role of the actress. As Pickering, it's nice to see Christopher Innvar (Floyd Collins) in good voice again after a bad patch that saw him depart prematurely from A New Brain. David McCallum does about as well as possible in the dual role of Danziger and Ward's father, and the veteran actor can even sing a little.
Time and Again is a worthy attempt at a traditional book musical with a score often unashamedly in the operetta mode. I wish I could say that, after so many years of development, it has now found satisfying form. But it's a musical that really requires a sizable production, rather than this chamber mounting. If the result is respectable and worth seeing just for the best of the musical numbers, the piece remains uncomfortable and unfulfilled. Time and Again is in something of its own time warp, between the fuller but unnecessarily dutiful Old Globe version and the more original but undernourished MTC one. Perhaps Finney's novel should have been a movie.

I am back at work from my morning dance call for The Brain. It was quickly apparent to me that I was in a bit over my head with the dancing. Since I knew there was no way I was going to be able to pick up the routine as quickly as everyone was moving, I just relaxed and had fun, trying to learn as much as I could. There were some amazing dancers, and of course cute, sweaty boys. What more could a girl ask for on a Wednesday morning?!

Thanks Ginny! The cough is about the same. I still haven't had a successful night of sleep. I had a brain flash at about 4:30AM and realized that my "cold" started about the same time that I began watching the kittens Helter and Skelter- I tried using my inhaler and that actually helped... I can't believe I hadn't made the connection until now but I guess that the lack of sleep has dulled my brain.

Imagine bankrolling that group in NYC today!
The themes certainly lend themselves to lush musicality, but the necessary plot machinations must make things difficult. Much of the charm of the novel is in it's detailed recreation of early-times NYC.
Having done Time and Again, maybe Skip should try musicalizing Caleb Carr's The Alienist! - there's a challenge!

Sounds like we need to dump the book (keep a "based on an idea by" link if necessary) and providea less complex plot to support the score. Aim for a minimalist set and save the budget for musicians.

For those of you who think NYC is glamorous, I am back home from what has been a hellish lousy day of maneuvering. I got the the subway at 9:50 am to find it packed and to be told they were only running to 34th Street. That was okay since that was the stop I wanted, only the fucking trains weren't running. Every bus running down Broadway was like a sardine can and anyone who could drive had a car so the traffic on Broadway, which I walked down to 63rd Street, was a a standstill. The asshole MTA, which is clearly prepared to do two things - not deal with an emergency situation and raise fares for continual pathetic service - hadn't enough buses to cope so I sat on a parkbench at 63rd and Broadway for an hour. First three No. 7 buses, all jammed stopped, Then an empty No. 7 drove by with a sign saying something crappy like "wait for the next."
Finally, after seeing none for over 30 minutes, four No. 104 buses, all jam packed, arrived together as if afraid to not travel in herds. I decided to cross over to Lincoln Center and take a No. 9 bus to find a huge crowd waiting and every No. 9,which seemed to arrive every 15 minutes or so, completely packed. At 11:45 I decided to see how the subway was looking and the train that arrived seemed nearly empty. I arrived at the auditions at about noon.
After the auditions, I figuredthe crisis was over so I walked to 42nd Street with Adam, the choreographer, where I missed a local train, which was clearly packed because the congestion on the platform was ridiculous. What the hell is the MTA doing? So I went back upstairs after waiting and sweating too long for trains that were clearly not running, but at the 42nd Street bus stop for the 104, there was a crowd and not a bus in sight. I walked to 8th Avenue to hail a cab, waiting for a good 10 minutes or longer and a young lady stepped out in front of me and hailed the cab waiting for the light. Thew asshole driver stopped for her, I complained, and when she said the equivalent of "tough tittie" to me, I told her explicitly where to shove the cab along with the horse she rode in on.
I walked down Eighth Avenue to 40th Street and caught a cab. It took me around 75 minutes to get back. I will not be going back downtown tonight for any Hainsie/Kimlet gathering till I know that everything is once again running on some semblance of a schedule.

Thank-goodness - I can stop fretting!
To expand on Jane's comments on the proposal:
Writing a love scene for Brenda and Fritz is a real challenge - played straight up it would be out of character; having the scene interupted by a wise crack would be disconcerting - the "Can I keep my own name" line was a brilliant bit that provide the necessary whimsy without destroying the overall mood. Well done to the writer(s)!
I noticed that the producers, James Duff and Mike Berchem gets full wrting credit for this episode.

SOUTH CAROLINA GOP TO FORCE IOWA CAUCUSES INTO 2007 (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,292577,00.html)
On Thursday morning, South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Katon Dawson will hold a news conference in Concord, N.H., in which he will announce the date of the South Carolina Republican Primary will be held Jan. 19.
But his state's new primary date will activate the New Hampshire primary protection law requiring that New Hampshire hold its primary seven or more days before any similar elections. Currently, the New Hampshire primary has been tentatively scheduled for Jan. 22.
When New Hampshire has to move at least seven days before the 19th, the Iowa law requiring its caucuses be held eight days before the any other event will also kick in. Iowa's date was tentatively set for Jan. 14.
Iowa's caucus organizers will be faced with a difficult choice of either moving their caucuses to before or right around Christmas or New Year's Day. Otherwise, the Iowa caucuses would have to go after New Hampshire violating Iowa law.
By announcing this two days before the Iowa GOP straw poll, Dawson is taking a deliberate shot at Iowa.
New Hampshire Secretary of State Bill Gardner will not announce New Hampshire's primary schedule on Thursday nor will he even say when he might announce that date.
He has said he will announce sometime in the late fall but he could wait until December specifically to prevent other states, including Iowa, from moving their dates in any way that would diminish New Hampshire's role in the nominating hierarchy.
Stayed tuned!

Philips, a little coffee bar on 56th, just east of Seventh. It's hard to find unless you look for its sandwich board. It's in the Carnegie Hall Tower, but that isn't obvious.
I hope I'm not making you walk too far. I've learned here, in the past, that people have different concepts of what's just around the corner than I do. We're talking roughly 1 20/th of a mile from the Wellington.
Near where BK is now staying, I like a place I think may be called Naked City, on Ninth between 52nd and 53rd. If it's not called Naked City, well, it only means I must have seen someone there and pictured her naked. It's got a film noir theme.

The dance call was a whole lot of fun - I was like a little kid in a candy shop, because I love watching people tap dance. Adam, our choreographer, is going to be wonderful - his Brain Tap routine is fantastic, even in this rough approximation. After that, we saw a bunch or Rod hopefuls and a couple of Fred hopefuls. The Freds weren't good, but three of the Rods were - it was a tough choice between two of them - one huge 6'5" fellow (who'd just played the title role in Li'l Abner at Goodspeed), and one fellow who was about 5'10" but very scrawny looking. Because I'm very used to the visual of the fellow who did it in LA, my instinct was to go with the tall fellow - the other guy gave a very quirky and interesting reading, but there's blocking that requires the actor to constantly lift Merrill and move her across the seat from him, and I just thought the scrawny guy would not come to that naturally. Also, it would be more of a "grunge" Rod with him. The other guy is directable and I decided to make him first choice. We chose the rest of the ensemble, which, because we've cut two people out, was really hard. If they all say yes, we'll have a helluva ensemble, that's all I can say, and I can tell you that many hainsies/kimlets will be very happy to see two of the boys in their small, tight gold lame bathing suits.

So, IF everyone from the other day and today accepts, we're fully cast with two minor exceptions - the leads of the show, Fred and Joyce. I have a fallback position for Fred, which I'll go with if we absolutely can't find anyone else I like better. He'd take some direction, but I think he'd be fine and he has a terrific voice and sort of looks the part. I don't know if I've mentioned it before, but our first Fred offer went to Donny Osmond (a BK idea), but he had commitments in LA. Our second Fred offer went to Brian d'Arcy James, and that took quite a while - but he was up for an off-B'way show and he got it, so declined our offer. Today, another offer went out to someone I've worked with several times, with whom I'd be very happy. If he passes, then there's one more offer after that - I haven't worked with that actor, but everyone loves him so I know he'd be fine. If that is a pass, then I'll probably go to the fallback position and be done with it.
Our casting guy gave the actresses' agent until noon to say yea or nay, otherwise we were moving on. At eleven-thirty we heard from the agent asking if they could have until five, because the actress had to discuss it with her husband (she'd have to drive to the city and deal with parking). So, we won't have our answer for a few more hours, and I'm still hoping it will be a yea.

Husband? So Liza got married again?
-
But, BK, you haven't mentioned casting the Ed Sullivan look-alike or the girls for the parade of tacky prom dresses. Does mean you're not incorporating the elements that came to me in my dream the other night ;) ?
-
Besides, you couldn't get performers like Cason, Alet, and Benjamin...I can't imagine those roles being played by anyone else..at least not as well.
Not that I'm biased -- never! :) -- but spot on, DR Mikey. I agree 100% !!
Make that 110%! ... oh, just make it Infinity %

Just as hot as they predicted, and it's just miserable outside. I am SO sorry for people who have to work in these kinds of conditions.

.. and I can tell you that many hainsies/kimlets will be very happy to see two of the boys in their small, tight gold lame bathing suits.

I began my afternoon finshing BERSERK! Hey, it ended just like it has the last five or six times I watched it! :D
-
While I was finishing up lunch, one of the pay cable channels was showing EVIL UNDER THE SUN letterboxed, so I watched about twenty minutes of it. The DVD looks better, of course, since it's anamorphic, but the movie always makes me laugh; it's so filed with great catty dialog and wonderful performances.
-
Then I watched the three special features on the second disc in in CRIA CUERVOS set.
First up was a one hour biography of director Carlos Sauna. (He directed that famous CARMEN with flamenco dancing back in the 1980s). Interesting man with interesting films to his credit though I have to admit I hadn't seen many of them.

Right now, I'm posting from the NYMF crowd's favorite coffee place, The Coffe Pot at 49th & 9th. I can't stand Eighth Avenue, but I love Ninth, for plenty of welcoming and/or comfy places like these.
I love The Coffee Pot. Great place if any of you out of town H/Ks are in the neighborhood.

Page Eight Harry Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew Dance!!!

Then I watched two interviews with the film's two leading ladies: Geraldine Chaplin and Ana Torrent (who was 7 when the film was made). In this one, Chaplin speaks English, but in the other bonus in the set (and in the film itself), she speaks fluent Spanish.

The Kinky Atered Perspective Dance in honor of Page 8 (with two studs in gold lame undies popping out of a Baked Alaska singing "All About Men" in honor of der Brucer's BD -- could those two studs be our very own DRs MusicGuy and Jose -- yes!)

I wonder what she usually does when she has a job in the city. Or around the reservoir.

I concluded my afternoon by rewatching Monday night's THE CLOSER. Very entertaining, and I shed a few tears at the end of the doctor's office scene just as I did when I saw it for the first time Monday night. What a beautiful moment.

Great news!!!
USA has renewed BURN NOTICE for a second season of 13 episodes to be shown next summer. This should make DR Elmore as happy as it made me.
Holly Hunter's series SAVING GRACE has also been renewed for another season (15 episodes) though the VARIETY article said most likely TNT will move it to a different night next summer and try to build a new series behind it.

Good Afternoon!
Yes, it's hot and humid in NYC. But, again... It's Summer. It's August. It's supposed to be hot and humid. "Acceptance" makes it feel cooler than it really is.

Oh, yikes! I know, I keep forgetting, sorry all you families out there .. me bad!

DR elmore - See what happens when you call the MTA officials bad names! ;)
When I got to Columbus Circle, I had my choice of an A Express or a B Local to take back uptown. And since I had the time - and wanted to sit in a near empty train car - I took the B. -And it managed to pull into the station just as the A was heading on uptown. :)
So... Just take the 1 Train to 50th Street tonight. And, remember, don't curse the MTA before you leave your apartment. ;)

Quick, somebody get the "Will Bender!"

If these the folks you asked to be Joyce and Fred don't work out, maybe you could ask Judy Kaye and her DH.

Ah, The Coffe Pot. It used to be owned by the same folks who run Pietrasanta and Rachel's (and the now-closed Sag Harbor). It changed hands a year or two ago, and it closed for a few weeks for some spiffying up and remodeling. It's still a nice place, but it's not the same (at least to me).

I would have taken out a loan to go to NYC if Donny Osmond played Fred.

Fox Theatre joins fledgling partnership
By WENDELL BROCK
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 08/09/2007
For years, most of the nation's performing arts centers have let Broadway dictate the programming. Now Atlanta's Fox Theatre and Theater of the Stars have decided to get in on the development of new Broadway musicals.
The two Atlanta entities have invested in Elephant Eye Theatrical, a New York-based production company headed by former Disney Theatrical executive Stuart Oken. Backed by a consortium of 15 arts organizations from across the country, Elephant Eye is already at work on "The Addams Family," based on the quirky New Yorker cartoons by the late Charles Adams and expected to hit Broadway by the end of 2009.
"It's the first time in our history that we will have some direct control over the touring product," Fox general manager Allan C. Vella said. "It will allow us to be involved in the organization that will create theater productions for years to come."
According to Oken, the members of the $8 million initative will be involved in the creation of content. They will also own the material, lock in the rights to present the musicals and share in profits — should the initial investment be recouped.
Over time, Atlanta could potentially be the site of out-of-town tryouts for Elephant Eye's Broadway-bound shows. At 4,678 seats, the Fox is probably too big for the launch of unfamiliar new work, Oken said, but other partners, such as the Alliance Theatre, could be recruited. National tours could also start in Atlanta, Oken said.
With the world premiere of "Aida" (1998) and "The Color Purple" (2004) at the Alliance, Atlanta has caught the eye of national producers — although Chicago, Seattle and San Francisco remain the preferred cities for out-of-town tryouts. The Alliance — which last year launched the national tour of "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" — won this year's Tony Award for regional excellence. Theater of the Stars, meanwhile, produced the world premiere of Disney's "High School Musical," which became the template for Disney's current national tour.
"I wanted to be involved in Atlanta," Oken said. "Atlanta is a thriving and exciting theater community." The CEO and producer of Elephant Eye, Oken worked for Disney Theatricals when "Aida" was born at the Alliance.
Two years ago, five non-profit arts organizations — the Bushnell Center of Hartford, Conn.; the Ordway Center of St. Paul, Minn.; the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust; Boston's Citi Performing Arts Center and Philadelphia's Kimmel Center — formed Five Cent Productions, now the core group of Elephant Eye.
Nine other arts entities, including the Fox and Theater of the Stars, recently joined Elephant Eye. Neither Vella nor Theater of the Stars' managing director Nicholas F. Manos would disclose the amount of the investment. "We and the Fox partnered together to make a modest investment," Manos said.
Elephant Eye's first project, a musical called "Saved," will get its world premiere next year at New York's Playwrights Horizons, the original producer of Broadway's "Grey Gardens." Gary Griffin ("The Color Purple") will direct. "The Addams Family" is expected to have its out-of-town tryout in Chicago in 2009, then move to Broadway by end of the year. A third musical, "Bruce Lee: Journey to the West," is in development for the 2010-11 Broadway season.

Forgot to mention that after auditions, Jose and I went to Supermac, where I had a small mac and four cheese which was the best I have ever had anywhere.

I have heard no confirmation from General Mills - what else is new?

And Philip's is good too, although I usually end up eating in the Park Cafe which is in Wellington. -Or going to "Between the Bread" next door - they have no tables, but great sandwiches to grab-and-go.
-Although, there's also that wonderful and very authentic espresso bar, Zibetto, on 6th Ave between 55th and 56th.

I have to tell you that the temperature right now here in Oakland is a sizzling F 66!
The fog is only partially burned off but we should see relatively blue skies for the rest of the afternoon...until about 7 p.m. or so when the fog (marine layer) begins rolling back in across the bay.
I was sorry to hear about the devastating rain and heat in NYC. I'm particularly sorry for my mom's sake as she and my aunt are in NYC this very minute...probably just getting din-din. They had a big day of riding up and down the Hudson and doing some shopping. Tonight: "Les Miz".

DR edisaurus - ...And if you want a pretty decent burger and fries - and milkshakes! - be sure to check out the Burger Joint off/in the lobby of the Parker Meridien Hotel, which is right around the corner on 56th from the Wellington.

Why I oughta .... to the moon, Ronnie, to the moon ... :-*

General Mills is on board - Steve Luker (no relation to our beloved Rebecca). Steve did the B'way company of the 42nd Street revival, and my pal Todd Ellison, who conducted it, loved working with him. And, as I said, he just came in and nailed it perfectly (especially after the actor we saw today who read for it - perfectly acceptable but not funny - Steve was funny). So, that's one less headache. I guess the actress is out, since it's after five, and I think we'll make the next offer.

WOW! Watching the news and seeing the footage from all the storm damage and travel woes this morning... I guess I got lucky.
I had started off by trying to grab a train at 145th Street - right by my apartment. Well, the platform was packed, and after a few minutes, I headed back out of the station and started walking down to 135th... and then down to 125th. I had been hearing lots "rumbling" as I was walking down St. Nicholas Ave., so I figured the trains were running again somewhat. After just a minute or two on the platform, and A train pulled into the station on the local track. Then a minute later, a D Train pulled in on the express track, and since the A had not pulled out of the station yet, I crossed over to the D. Then it was just one stop to Columbus Circle where another A train was waiting... Which I took to Penn Station.
Inconvenient trip, yes. Long trip, yes. But I have to say, it didn't feel that hot as I walked down St. Nicholas Ave. from 145th to 125th. And, thankfully, the A/C was working on the trains.

Joyce is the character, not the actress. The latest: The agent is telling us that the actress really wants to do it, but must talk to her husband who was supposed to be home by now but who's running late. So, she asked us to wait just a little while longer, and since it's now to late for the other offer to go out, we'll wait - I'm hoping to hear tonight, or the morning at the latest, but if we haven't heard by ten-thirty, the other offer goes out - and that actress is free and if she likes it, that will probably work out. Gregg Edelman, whose offer was on the table for Fred, will be out of the country, so the next offer is already out - haven't worked with this actor, but everyone I've spoken to about him adores him, so I'm just flying on a wing and a prayer.
-
But can you get a Coca-Cola cupcake (pronounced Co-Cola) anywhere but Atlanta?
You mean one that is made with Coca-Cola (in both the cake and frosting)? If so, yes. There are two amazing Harlem bakeries that make Chocolate Coca-Cola Cakes - as full sheet cakes and cupcakes.

and, as I said, the No. 1 was not running smoothly uptown at 2:30 pm.
Well, just to cover your bases, you could always take the bus up a few blocks to 96th Street so that you could have your choice of the 1, 2, or 3. -Of course, if you take the 2 or 3, then you'd have to get off in the middle of all the Times Square madness, rather than getting off at 50th. -Unless you were able to switch over to the 1 at 72nd.
-
I guess the actress is out, since it's after five, and I think we'll make the next offer.
This whole business reminds me of when we're casting for low-budget films. The actors hold out on making a commitment because they're waiting for another offer which would mean more money/higher profile. So they string you along and it's nerve-wracking because you want to cast someone opposite them that they'd work well with.
I'm not saying that this actress is holding out, just that I feel your pain, bk!
-
Sounds kinky ::)
But not as kinky as "beaver tail"!

Patatas bravas are basically Spanish french-fries/home fries. Chunks of potatoes that have been deep-fried. Usually sprinkled with hot paprika and served with either an aioli or salsa rioja. If I go to a tapas restaurant, I usually get an order.

Our office moved to a new building a couple of weeks ago. I love my new office area which has a huge picture window that looks down on State Street....but by gosh I have never been in a place that has so many ambulances, fire engines, and police cars racing by with lights flashing and sirens going.

The poltical manipulators at about screwing Iowa:
NH is moving their primary to January, which might shove Iowa's back to New Years Day!
At this rate, we might awaken to a headline that says:
Presidential election was held yesterday!
der Brucer
We're not worried, we'll vote on Christmas if need be ;)

I'm curious what those who watch BIG BROTHER think of the banner plane!
Btw (live feed comment), looks like amber's comments have caused quite a stir. Will CBS air them?
What did she say?
-
Thank-goodness - I can stop fretting!

DER B - PLEASE USE SPOILERS> Last night was the first chance I had to watch this episode, but I considered waiting until tonight.
Thanks...... birthday kisses :-* :-*
-
DR DERBRUCER, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
I HOPE YOUR DAY WAS EXTRA SPECIAL!
-
From Bruce:
It turns out our guy did call and wanted to talk about what he is saying is large miscommunication issues immediately - only he called my home phone, and tonight, just a moment ago, is the first time I have checked that voice mail. I know he has my cell, so it's weird.
It is surprising how often that has happened to me. People call the house when I’m traveling & the cell, which doesn’t work in the house, when I’m here. I tend to leave important messages on both phones.

Miss Dixie and I think that Miss Blue Moon is BEAUTIFUL!
Sherlock & I think Miss Blue Moon and Miss Dixie Belle are both BEAUTIFUL!
-
Der B---I just loaded the new episode of THE CLOSER and Kyra is again wearing her floppy white hat to the crime scene, so she didn't leave it on the boat as you had feared!
;D

Callie and Boo say...."Dogs??? You're looking at dogs???"

Great news!!!
USA has renewed BURN NOTICE for a second season of 13 episodes to be shown next summer. This should make DR Elmore as happy as it made me.
Hey, I'm just as excited :D
-
The cats aren't looking......Miss Blue Moon and Miss Dixie Bell really are beautiful

Just a brief note.... It has been a very difficult day.. My dad is in ICU and I am on my way with DBF to Grand Forks.
I'm sorry, wishing you strength.
-
A lady just showed up at my work with two beautifully framed SACCO AND VANZETTI posters---one was the theatrical poster (HUGE!) and the other was for the screenings in Italy in July. They should look nice in the new editing room, if the wall can hold them!
How very, very nice of her. Will there be photos?
-
Ginny, I like your traditional standing oven. We had one in our first house but not since then.
DR elmore, GOOD JOB VIBES!!!!
-
I'm keeping up with the posts & NY news, but that might be impossible the next couple of days. Craig & Bryan are coming Saturday & we are busy sorting through closets, drawers, etc. What has been left here, which is most of Craig's belongings, must be sorted through & decisions made what is to be kept, tossed or taken home with him.
Bruce, SAFE & EASY TRAVELS tomorrow. Vibes your actress accepts!
'night

Have a great time visiting with your boys Jane!

Ginny congrats on the new oven... I like your paper above the stove... very fitting!!
Thanks, DR Vixmom! The wallpaper border goes all around the ceiling in the kitchen and we had just enough left for that area above the stove.
-
Ginny, I like your traditional standing oven. We had one in our first house but not since then.
...
Jane, does that mean you've had a built-in oven instead? I've never had one.
-
Thanks from Miss Blue Moon to all DR's and doggies who gave her compliments. She is pleased.
Cats? They are dismissed.
-
Thoughts for DR DAKOTACELT.
Yes....the HHW Joe Allen meeting must be just a memory now....so we are hoping for photos.
Bring 'em on!
-
If you know THE FANTASTICKS....and most do...and my guess is EVERYONE here does....you know that Mortimer has a speech about "diving off a 20 foot cliff...."
I have been doing that part on the steps leading to the platform and turning for the word "backwards"....tonight I get there and El Gallo is standing in my spot ... on the steps ... in my way ...
It killed my bit....GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
-
Off to watch some telly.....and think about all the fun being had in NYC....except DR ELMORE....the transportation fairies were certainly against you today, my friend.

I went to midtown and joined BK, DRS Jose, FJL, Julie, and Noel for a wonderful dinner. The good spirits, tasty food, and outrageous wit and gossip restored my sense of humor and energy.
I also heard from friends in Brooklyn that they were okay and that was good news as well.
-
Guess who is in the Big Apple?
-
Hi Cason, glad you made it safely
-
Miss Cason, time for a new Brain avatar, don't you think?
-
Der Brucer....the news just said that the Iowa Caucuses will likely be in Mid December!
-
Back from a lovelier than lovely time with dear readers, FJL, Julie, Jose, elmore, and Noel. It was a lot of fun. When we exited the restaurant, it was like walking into a hot sauna.
-
No messages re actress, so by the time I arrive back in LA it will either be yes, or we'll have offered it to the other actress.
-
I agree - a new avatar IS in order!
-
I began my evening of viewing with BROTHERS GRIMM in Blu-ray. It's a half step up from the standard definition version I saw on STARZ! but it isn't leaps and bounds better than CHICAGO or PHANTOM or several others I've upgraded from SD to HD.
Speaking of Matt Damon, in an interview I read with him this week in ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, he revealed that he was first offered BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN (I'm assuming Heath Leger's part), but he didn't take it because he had just done MR. RIPLEY and ALL THE PRETTY HORSES back to back, and didn't want to play variations on the last two films he had done.
-
Next, I put in CHICAGO on Blu-ray and watched four numbers ("When You're Good to Mama," "Cell Block Tango," "We Both Reached for the Gun," and "Hot Honey Rag").
Then, I started watching some of the special features. The special features on the CHICAGO Blu-ray are all ports from the SD version.
-
I ended my evening with RESCUE ME, a rather uninvolving episode with
Tommy and his wife splitting (again), Mike getting injured in a fire truck accident, Sean trying intervention in order to save his marriage, and Franco being turned down by the Susan Sarandon characterso he'll go back to his finance.
-
Good Evening!
Back from Joe Allen... yadda-yadda-yadda.... ;)
-
Welcome to NYC, DR Cason! Which part of town are you staying in? -Just in case you need restaurant suggestions.
-And what time are we going to the Reservoir tomorrow?
-
DR Cillaliz - WOW! You got great seats! :) *And if you're thinking of getting some merch for Sam, just remember there are ways of getting it at cost. ;)

I'm in Midtown (on 44th St, between 9th and 10th Aves.) - fairly close to "Restaurant Row," according to the owner of the apartment building.
I may have to give you a rain check on the Reservoir - but soon enough Jose, soon enough.

Well, Restaurant Row is 46th between 8th and 9th, so you are close. You're also very near to a couple of other good, cheap places to eat.
-
As for the Reservoir... Well... I won't hold my breath.
Then again, I never hold my breath.
(Whatever the frell that means.) ;D
-
I'm heading downstairs now to get some sleep.
Good night!
-
Just back from the great gathering at Joe Allen's. BK, FJL, elmore, Jose, Noel and I had a great evening of laughs, conversation and food. We turned that corner of the room into NYMF central. A lovely time. Safe trip home, BK.
-
Posting notes now, and then I must try to get a couple of hours sleep.

Cats? They are dismissed.
