Title: HEY, LA, I'M COMIN' YOUR WAY
Post by: bk on August 08, 2007, 09:15:59 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were dry and factual, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - and they will be singing, hey, LA, I'm comin' your way.  Oh, and I have a bad blister right under my big toe from all the walking in my Converse sneakers, which are not walking shoes.

I'm embarrassed to report the transportation fairies were with me yesterday (I think some may have been at dinner): took me exactly the usual amount of time to take the subway in the morning and the bus back at night.  Before leaving home, I wrote the duet the show needs, and, in the afternoon, we heard affirmatively from one of the men who will sing it.

Good to meet Fred at long last, and Julie, who's a dead ringer for her avatar..

Oh, and Bruce and Elmore and Mr. Piano too.  Fun

I am home from Chinese food with my mom and a stop at Best Buy where she fell in love with a 22 inch plasma screen. We hooked it up to her computer and now she can see her much better when on the internet and e-mail...she was as giddy as a little girl!

She has terrible eyesight and previously had to use a magnifying glass when reading the screen.

JEWEL THIEF (1967) starring Dev Anand, Ashok Kumar, Vyayantimala, and Helen. Should be fun!

I want PIE from The Little Pie Company!!!

And on that declaration, I am going to fold up my tent, and steal away with the gypsies to bed.

News from Grand forks....

My father is touch and go but is still in ICU. They are monitoring his heart after his heart rate became extremely erratic after draining 8 liters of fluid off of his abdomen and body. Prognosis is that he will have continued bloating and it will grow progressively worse.

The thing that ticks me off about the whole situation is that the Grand Forks Hospital did not have any cryo or monoclate for my father before they started the procedure to drain him. He needs those items due to being a hemophiliac. They had to wait two hours before they could even start the procedure when my sister could go to Fargo to get more monoclate and cryo. THey had none in stock and they ended up having to use my nephew's supply becuase the GF hospital does not see hemophilia as a medical issue. Crap, there are 15 hemophiliacs in the Grand Forks area, one would think it might be prudent to have some on hand in case of emergency. Remind me never to have a surgical procedure done in Grand Forks. Direct quote: "We do not see this as an issue and in case of emergency we depend on the family."

Gotta love medical service common sense or the lack of it. I apologize for venting but I really needed to get that off my chest.

It has been a trying day... Now I need to try and unwind and get soem sleep... Thank you for the vibes. They brought me piece and you are truly gems.

He is really a lovely man. Happy and non complaining. He still brings joy to others with his jokes and singing.

4.5-MAGNITUDE QUAKE RATTLES LOS ANGELES

LOS ANGELES —  A light earthquake rattled the Los Angeles area early Thursday, waking residents and knocking some items off shelves and walls.

The magnitude 4.5 temblor struck just before 1 a.m. about 4 miles northwest of Chatsworth, according to a preliminary report from the U.S. Geological Survey.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage, said spokesman Brian Humphrey, of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The quick jolt was felt by residents across Los Angeles County.

I am so rooting for Eric to stay...I really, really dislike Evil Dick...I end up liking Jessica more and more each week.

I miss Nick and Mike.

Everytime Amber cries in the diary room (which appears to be every time she is in the diary room) I just laugh... I can't help it...it is almost likea running gag or something. She is sweet person, I think.

PS: I don't get the live feed so I avoid any discussion of that due to not wanting to see any spoilers (not that it would be a catastrophe or anything, however).

I am also rooting for Eric to stay. I also really like jessica. And i also really dislike Evil Dick.

I don't get the feeds either. But i'm telling you you are missing out on a lot by not reading about the live feeds.

There are a couple of websites that lay out exactly what is happening with pictures. So you will feel like you are getting the feeds.

CBS is editing a story. They are not showing what is really happening.

I don't read spoilers for any other shows. But BB is different. Because it's happening now. So you're not spoiling anything by finding out what is really going on.

I would encourage you to just check out what is being written. If you don't like it then stop. But I don't think you realize what you are missing. It is a 100 times more enjoyable.

Here are the 2 i would recommend strongly:

Good morning, all!  Yes, I slept late. Kaye Ballard's bio HOW I LOST 10 LBS IN 53 YEARS arrived yesterday and I am enjoying it immensely.  I read until around 1 am last night, after I watched the repeat of last night's TOP CHEF.

Back to the NYPL today, which will be fun.  I may do a bit of rewrites for BABES & LADY OF THE SLIPPER before I go, and I have to book a train ticket for next week to DC.  I'm thinking about a day trip to the Library of congress next Tuesday.

Mac & Cheese?  I must say that Joe Allen's is awfully good, and did we have mac&cheese at Good Enough to Eat, DR Jose?

I think the banner planes ought to be allowed just as long as EVERYone gets a chance to be skewered.

Of all the liars in the house, Eric is the least offensive since his lies are dictated by America via Big Brother.  Amber is another story...but even she pales compared to self-righteous hypocrite Evil Dick.

As for Amber's live feed comments....I think the rest of the house ought to hear what she said to Jameka.  And I think Jameka should confide in others about it.

I actually used to love the banner planes. But i agree with whta you wrote. They either have to allow them or not. It's totally unfair that eric's entire game got screwed over because of his plane.

I'm sure the producers could have stopped that plane. Or made the HGs close their eyes (or be thrown out of the game).

Apparently eric has been quite bad on the feeds. From reading it i just get the sense that he talks a lot and behind people's backs.

But nothing like Evil. Even what they've shown is nothing compared to the things he's said.

RE: amber, what she said is awful. But at least it is most likely out of ignorance. What is Dick's excuse?

DRJENNIFER - I enjoyed the HAIRSPRAY movie as well.  And Nikki Blonskey is a very sweet Tracy.

The Edna role will always belong to Devine - for me, anyway - and some of Travolta's dialog was difficult to understand - but it was fun to see him dance.  I also liked Michelle Pfeiffer as Amber's mom.  The dancing was fun....

Yes-sir-re-bob! Bukowsical opens Aug. 11. He's the male understudy -- but he and the female understudy switch off doing "The Lawyer" every other performance. They haven't assigned which performances they'll be doing "The Lawyer" during the musical's run there at the Fringe Festival, but as soon as he knows I'm sure one (or both) of us will be posting those dates.

Cason says Bukowsical is a must see (even though you won't get to see him in the part he was supposed to do on Saturday cause the actor decided not to be in his sister's wedding -- this is my afterthought/comment not Cason's.  He was raving about the musical the other day and is past the disappointment -- it's his mother who needs to get over it.... ). He says it's irreverent, shocking, hilarious, brilliant, lampoonish, entertaining, and push-the-envelope-kind-of-fun.

How ironic that this AMC series is shown letterboxed, but the network would rather DIE than show one of their "classic movies" in widescreen format!

Case says the sublet is really nice as well as the owner -- she had even put the air-conditioner on in the bedroom so it was cool when he got there.

(Whew! I had visions of the taxi dropping him off at some vacant lot with a cardboard box sitting there with a sign reading "Sucker! -- ala some movie I saw where the vacationers had that happen with their hotel/motel ... Thanks for the info DR MISS KAREN....I like to know the dates I will be missing shows in NYC.

Have you made any seamed stockings yet?

Hey, you know you can always count on me for a gratuitous post! Everything you need to know about something you don't need to know about....

Haven't done costumes for a play or musical that requires them yet -- but I'll let you know if I ever get to try your suggestion.

A side, never an entree. My dad was a meat eater, absolutely essential that we have it at every meal.

Sounds like my household - Mom had trouble getting Pop to accept any pasta as a potato substitute and rice was unknown (except in soups). Mac-and-cheese was fine as a side, as long as there were also potatoes on the plate.

Breakfast meats were always bacon or sausage (we hadn't discovered the Southern tradition that has no problem with fried chicken or pork chops for the morning meal  :))

As for the Topic of the Day...

There really isn't such a thing a "bad" mac'n'cheese, well, I guess there is, but those are few and far between.

I will say that I'm not partial to the "layered" type where the macaroni, shredded cheese, butter and cream are just combined in a baking dish before being baked.  I want my cream sauce, my bechamel sauce.

The stuff at SuperMac is very good, as is the stuff at S'Mac.  Both Angus McIndoe and Joe Allen have good mac'n'cheese.  French Roast does too.  I like the stuff from Good Enough To Eat, but sometimes it's been more like pasta in cheese sauce rather than mac'n'cheese.  There is a difference.  ;)

As for the best I've ever had, well... My own, of course.  :)  It's been a few years since I've made it, but I came across a recipe that used both mild and extra sharp cheddar cheeses, plus a bit of swiss/gruyere to smooth it all out.  Quite good.  And, of course, I like it topped with bread crumbs, and then run under the broiler for a few seconds for a good crust on top.

It got up to 102 here yesterday, an all-time record for that date. The highest ever recorded temperature for Charlotte is 104, so yesterday was something else. It's going to be near-100 today as well.

We'll have a high of 101 today. Yuck....

Hmm... It's currently just 81 degrees here in New York City.  I may just have to head to the Reservoir for a jog. -And since I haven't jogged in a while, I may just take a nice brisk walk.

*Alas, the rain is due back tonight, and there's a possibility that there could be another downpour tomorrow morning which could wreak havoc on the subway system again. :-\

The best mac'n'cheese I've ever had was from a recipe a friend gave me. I used to cook it quite often, but haven't done so in ages.

Not only do I agree with JOSE about the layered mac, I am absolutely APPALLED that anyone would just layer it, without making an actual cream sauce. Horrors! (The things we do when pressed for time.)

A.K.A. the tilde.

I'm up, I'm up... I must've tuckered myself out yesterday at LEGALLY BLONDE because I passed out in my recliner last night while I was reading (God, I'm starting to sound like an old man!) at around 3:00 this morning. I woke up long enough to get myself into bed at around 4:00, and then my friend Amy drunk dialed me from San Francisco at 4:45. I was not happy and I did not take her call. Anyway, I just woke up about an hour ago... I was tie-red!

And...my book is waiting for me at the library. :D I just have to finish "The Jungle Books" before I start the Tom Ripley stories.

OH!

My niece, Alyssa, loves her chicken and potatoes.  However, the first time I cooked dinned for her, she kept asking for "Papas Chicken".  What?  Did she want her "Papa's Chicken"?  Well, after calling her mother - who's from Puerto Rico - I found out she was asking for potatoes and chicken.  -Alas, preferably fried, but she likes mashed potatoes (just boiled and mashed, no salt, no butter, no cream/milk).

Alas it was not. But she thought it was cause i always bring it in that same blue container!

She is too cute.

Back in the home environment.  I attempted to post from the airport, but something was screwy and I think it was because I'd "added" the dial-up for AOL.  I nuked the "new location" but still couldn't get online via AOL or Safari.  So, I shut down.  That may have done the trick - rebooting, because when I got home just now, all is working well.  The actress thing is STILL going on, if you can believe it, despite my admonition that we move on as of ten this morning - but it's looking like we might close it today, so if we do that's fine, but if we don't, we just lost another day of making an offer to another actress, who is known and who gets very busy.

I just got this from a friend of mine.  I believe DR edisaurus will appreciate this in particular.  -Although, I believe similar lists have been made up for L.A, NYC, DC, etc.

Quote
This is for anyone who lives in Atlanta, has ever lived in Atlanta, has ever visited Atlanta, ever plans to visit Atlanta, knows anyone who already lives in Atlanta, or knows anyone who has ever heard of Atlanta .

Atlanta is composed mostly of one-way streets. The only way to get out of downtown Atlanta is to turnaround and start over when you reach Greenville, South Carolina.

All directions start with, "Go down Peachtree" and include the phrase, "When you see the Waffle House." Except that in Cobb County, where all directions begin with, "From the Big Chicken."

Peachtree Street has no beginning and no end and is not to be confused with:

Peachtree Circle
Peachtree Place
Peachtree Lane
Peachtree Road
Peachtree Parkway
Peachtree Run
Peachtree Terrace
Peachtree Avenue
Peachtree Commons
Peachtree Battle
Peachtree Corners
New Peachtree
Old Peachtree
West Peachtree
Peachtree-Dunwoody
Peachtree-Chamblee
Peachtree Industrial Boulevard

Atlantans only know their way to work and their way home. If you ask anyone for directions, they will always send you down Peachtree.

And yes, they have a street named simply, "Boulevard."

Only a native can pronounce Ponce De Leon Avenue , so do not attempt the Spanish pronunciation. People will simply tilt their heads to the right and stare at you. The Atlanta pronunciation is " pawntz duh LEE-awn."

Atlanta is the home of Coca-Cola. Coke's all they drink there so don't ask for any other soft drink unless it's made by Coca-Cola. Even if you want something other than a Coca-Cola, it's still called Coke.

The gates at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport are about 32 miles away from the Main Concourse, so wear sneakers and pack a lunch.

The 8 a.m. rush hour is from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
The 5 p.m. rush hour is from 3:00 p.m. to 7:30 pm.
Friday's rush hour starts Thursday afternoon and lasts through 2 a.m. Saturday.

The falling of one raindrop causes all drivers to immediately forget all traffic rules.

If a single snowflake falls, the city is paralyzed for three days and it's on all the channels as a news flash every 15 minutes for a week. Overnight, all grocery stores will be sold out of milk , bread, bottled water, toilet paper, and beer.

I-285, the loop that encircles Atlanta , which has a posted speed limit of 55 mph (but you have to maintain 80 mph just to keep from getting run over), is known to truckers as "The Watermelon 500."

Don't believe the directional markers on highways:
I-285 is marked "East" and "West" but you may be going North or South. The locals identify the direction by referring to the "Inner Loop" and the "Outer Loop."
If you travel on Hwy 92 North, you will actually be going southeast.

Never buy a ladder or mattress in Atlanta. Just go to one of the interstates and you will soon find one in the middle of the road.

The last thing you want to do is give another driver the finger, unless your car is armored, your trigger finger is itchy and your AK-47 has a full clip.

Possums sleep in the middle of the road with their feet in the air.

There are 5,000 types of snakes and 4,998 live in Georgia .

There are 10,000 types of spiders. All 10,000 live in Georgia , plus a couple no one has seen before.

If it grows, it sticks. If it crawls, it bites. If you notice a vine
trying to wrap itself around your leg, you have about 20 seconds to escape, before you are completely captured and covered with Kudzu, and never heard from again.

It's not a shopping cart, it's a buggy.
"Fixinto" is one word (I'm fixinto go to the store).

Sweet Tea is appropriate for all meals (even breakfast) and you start drinking it when you're 2 years old.

"Jeet?" is actually a phrase meaning "Did you eat?"

"Momma-nem" means: "How is your Mother and all of the other children and other members of the family doing?"

If you understand these jokes, forward them to your friends from Atlanta, and those who just wish they were.

Lordy, I love Jawja!*

DR Jose, they forgot our neighborhood's main street: Peachtree Hills Avenue!

Curiously, most of the streets in the Peachtree Hills neighborhood are names after places in Virginia. Our house in the 2nd oldest, over 100 years old, and our street is named Virginia Place. I am proud to live in a neighborhood with "Peach" in the name!

Unfortunately, there are so many carpetbaggers down here that Atlanta has lost its regionality but many of the statements still apply in the outer burbs...

It took the CHEF FAR too long to CHAFFER over the sterling silver chafing dish, so it was sold to someone else instead.

Der Brucer is with us - taking a break from looking at recipe books in which he hopes to find a suitable meal to prepare for the birthday of SWOODY next week.
Oh no, no no no!  My cooking for him can be a treat, but his for me....

I shall insist that he take me out to dine.

Been a pretty miserable day all around today. First it's hot as blazes, and after lunch, the food didn't set particularly well in my stomach (must have not offered it a comfy chair), so that's been a little distressing this afternoon.

On top of it, as I was watching many of the special features on '300,' the HDMI connection started going crazy. At first I thought it might be my Blu-ray player rebelling, but that wasn't it. None of my HDMI devices would work. Kept getting static and stuff cutting in or out.

Now, that's not so serious with regular DVDs and HDTV/cable TV. I can just use the component connections or the over-the-air broadcast channels.

But I HAVE to have the HDMI connection for the Blu-ray; it's the only high definition connection.

Seems like it did this once before, and I just cut off the TV and when I went back later and turned it back on, everything was OK. I hope that's the case. It would be a shame to be so close to the end of the '300 special features and not be able to finish them.

Of the features I watched today for the first time, I really enjoyed the featurettes on the art direction/design for the film and also the costume designing. The costumes were a lot more complicated than some helmets, leather thongs, and sandals. Really interesting stuff, and I'd like to have seen more about it. The feature ran about 4 minutes, and I would have liked half an hour on just the clothes.

Color me quite happy...LOVE AMERICAN STYLE is coming to DVD soon...season one will be released in November!

I love this show!!

I wonder if ROOM 222 could be in the works some day???

I loved Room 222.  I had the piano music to the theme, memorized it and drove the family crazy playing it over and over....sort of the way I did with Barry Manilow's "Mandy" a few years later and "Magic to Do" after that.

Apparently there was a power outage here in coastal DelMarVa last night.  Power went down in Dewey Beach about five thirty in the evening.  Rehoboth Beach proper went down after that, and the store was hit at about seven thirty.

Der B and I didn't have any problems, which is why I didn't know about this until I got to work today.

It was nice to have the tourists talking about something other than the weather.

As for the store, only the dairy aisle was really hit.  Talk about a pick and choose power outage.  Fortunately the dairy team was able to move everything into their big refrigerated room in the back, so nothing went bad.

Getting everything back on the shelves this morning was a major operation for them, but the dairy aisle looked great when they were finished, even better than a few weeks ago when a special team came in and did a "restack" of the aisle.

Ginny,  all my ovens since then have been in the wall.  The built in ovens aren’t usually as large as a standing oven which took a bit of getting use to.  In most of our homes we had two ovens.  This house came with only one oven & a microwave.  When we remodeled we switched the microwave to a combination microwave/convection oven & added a warming drawer.  I really like the drawer when we have company.

Dakota, I hope they find a better way to relieve your father’s bloating.  Continued vibes & good thoughts to you and your family.

JRand, congrats on making the front page.

Bruce-continued vibes the actress accepts & all is settled shortly.

As for that birthday dinner...

Not the one last night.  The one that is coming up...

A chef in town, Jay Caputo, owns two of the better restaurants, Espuma (http://www.espumarestaurant.com/) and Chez la Mer (http://www.chezlamer.com/).  He happened to be one of my earlier customers, before any crowds started to show up (in other words, by about seven in the morning - my shift started at six today!) and I commented to him how great the site for Espuma is, but that Chez la Mer needs some updating.  He kind of rolled his eyes and nodded and said "Yeah, we've been meaning to get around to that."  He took over ClM just a few months ago, so getting the menu in gear has obviously been a higher priority.

It is fun to know these guys and talk with them while at work.  They're also getting used to the idea that I automatically run a second copy of the receipt for them, for business purposes, something they like.

Sherlock has met them several times and was always fine, until our last visit.....Bryan put one in Sherlock's face & it made the g-d awful noise they make when they are scared.  Sherlock was so scared he wouldn't go near Bryan, associating him with the sound & not the Sugar Glider.

Since Craig & Ioana will have the guest room, Bryan & the gliders will sleep in the murphy bed in the office.  Bryan will have to put them in their cage during the day so we can fold the bed back up.  At home they spend most days in his bed sleeping.  MBarnum saw how cute they are.

I just got this from a friend of mine.  I believe DR edisaurus will appreciate this in particular.  -Although, I believe similar lists have been made up for L.A, NYC, DC, etc.

It sure resonated from me.  I especially love the one about one-way streets and the only way to turn around is to wait until you get to Greenville, South Carolina.  That's my home town!  Lots of folks in Greenville have racked up miles and miles on the road to Hotlanta.

One item not on there was:

That's good for her (healthwise) and good for you (MORE for you to put on your potato!).

Man this politics stuff is amusing.  I can't believe the news media actually takes the Iowa Straw Poll seriously.  It was started as a fund raiser for the state Republican party. Tickets are $35 a piece (you need a ticket to vote) and are usually purchased by the candidates who have elaborate catered tent parties with lots of food, live music etc where they give away the tickets.  I always figure that people vote for whoever had the best party.   Guiliani and McCain were smart to skip it. They are on the ballot, but aren't participating.  The candidates usually drop about a million dollars on it between publicity, the party etc.

ATWT is one of "my stories".  I don't watch it as religiously as I used to, but I still tune in every now and then.  It's been interesting seeing how they dealt with the character coming out - and a teen/college-age character at that too!  And this latest bit of "tension" has been interesting to follow too.  I caught today's episode, and I guess I'll have to see how it plays out tomorrow.

I actually find both of the guys attractive, although I think Luke Snyder (Van Hansis) is hotter.  But Noah Mayer (Jake Silbermann) ain't bad either. ;)

I am going to be the birthday boy.

I think sticking to the menu this first time would be a better idea.

And it is Chef Jay.  And it's not just an honorific - he's earned the title.  Consider this review (http://www2.delawareonline.com/entertainment/dining/reviews/espuma.html) from a couple of summers ago.

My hunch, with Chez la Mer's emphasis on French, der B would prefer that restaurant's menu.  But we need to check it out first, see what's posted.

(And there's always the problems my work schedule can create.  *Le sigh.*)

I got so disgusted with Boo clawing the furniture last night that I barricaded off the living room and let her know verbally that I wasn't pleased. Callie was more upset about it than Boo, so later when we had all calmed down, I gave them lots of treats and went to bed.   About 4:45 AM Boo started  making noise....all I said in a deep voice was "Don't even think about it." She stopped!

Tonight we played toys and had dinner and she didn't claw the couch...well at least not yet, she's curled up on my lap right now.  So far so good.

I can't think of anyone else I know who I'd expect to say these words...

:)

Well... I did make a stop into the Senegalese boulangerie and patisserie - and café, Patisserie des Ambassades.  It's an interesting place.  There's an air of "high-end dining" in the dining area (and on their website (http://www.patisseriedesambassades.com/index.html)), but the way the counter and menus (xeroxes in clear plastic binders)are set up reveals it's home-cooking roots.

I did not stay to sample any of the Sengalese appetizers and entrees which shows the influence of many different cultures, but I did get two of their pastries to go.  The "tuna bread" was OK - basically a roll filled with tuna.  However, their almond croissant was quite wonderful.  Besides being topped with a generous crust of almonds, and filled with marzipan, there was also a layer of almond pastry cream inside.  YUM!

I guess I'll have to head back sometime to sample the real food there.

Not even six here and I'm bushed and ready for bed.  Watching a DVD.  Never had a call back from the actresses' agent, but my casting guy feels it's basically a done deal just awaiting confirmation - he asked me to be patient until tomorrow, and I will be - but that's it.  The problem is, these agents don't give a crap about NYMF - they make no money at all, so it's a very low priority even though it may not be for the producer/director or even the actress.

Hello all -- back from my day out on the town, with a tech and rehearsal for our Fringe al fresco performance under our belt.

Just for everyone's info, I'll be going up in "Bukowsical" as the lawyer for next Tuesday's (Aug. 14th) 10:00pm show, as well as our closing show next Saturday (Aug. 18th) at 3:30pm.

It's a shame, for a moment today, I had a glimmer of hope that I might get to step in for one of the guys, when he and the director got into a big row.  During our trip meeting last weekend, our director and tour manager said to leave today, tomorrow, and Saturday open - as we have our tech, two of these al frescoes, a 6 hour rehearsal, and our opening night.  However, when we were debating whether to have our al fresco rehearsal tonight after our tech or tomorrow before the al fresco, said actor made us all aware that he not only had a concert that he needed to be at that he had to leave for right then, as well as having a meeting with an ad agency tomorrow morning with his brother until 1 (when we have to perform at 1:30).

He and the director stuck behind to "talk" while the rest of us made our way to the place where we were practicing tonight (which he was absent from), but they didn't tell me to prepare to step in, so...damn.

DR Cason - "al frescoes" - Outdoor rehearsals?  Or is that some L.A. theatre term that I'm just not familiar with.  ;)

In any case...  I should be able to make it to either one of your performances.  -Are you able to request "holds" at the box office for friends/agents/colleagues/etc.?

Well, the Fringe does "al fresco" things - where for a two or three hour block of time, a certain number of shows get 7 minutes to do a number or a scene and hand out stuff, publicize, etc.

Yeah - just let me know which show you'd like to come to and we can hold a ticket or three.  :)

WeHowever, their almond croissant was quite wonderful.  Besides being topped with a generous crust of almonds, and filled with marzipan, there was also a layer of almond pastry cream i

Oh my g-d, that sounds heavenly!  Most often almond croissants barely have any marzipan in them.

But Noah Mayer (Jake Silbermann) ain't bad either. ;)

I think those pictures flatter both of them. However, neither is my type, and that's what I meant. I didn't mean to imply that they weren't attractive young guys.

I began the evening by finishing up all of the items on the '300' Blu-ray I hadn't gotten to previously. This included three deleted scenes (not needed and not missed), three webisodes which were all very interesting, and the audio commentary which got very technical as the director described what was real and what was CGI throughout the entire running time. Only occasionally did we get a juicy anecdote about the actors, other technical personnel, etc. Not my favorite kind of commentary, but at least he kept talking; there weren't long pauses between comments.

Next I watched TORN CURTAIN - well, up until the introduction of Lila Kedrova's character. I know a lot of people don't like this film, but it has grown on me more and more over the years, and now it's one of my favorite later Hitchcock movies. I much prefer it to the more celebrated MARNIE, for example.

Marnie was celebrated only in retrospect.  On its release it was one of the most critically lambasted of all Hitchcock films and audiences hated every minute of it.  In those days, I was literally one of its only supporters.

I also loved Torn Curtain when it came out and saw it probably fifteen or twenty times during its initial run.  I still like a lot of it (the German actors are great), but think it would be considered a classic had they not thrown out the Herrmann score, which makes the film a whole different ballgame - one need only watch the DVD extras, where they have the Herrmann score married to the visuals, at least as far as he got in the session before being fired.  The Addison score, fine as it is, makes the film too lightweight and, at times, downright silly and melodramatic.  The Herrmann score makes it serious, austere, and tense.
