Well, you've read the notes, the notes were mentioned cream sauce, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently shouting BRAVO and eating raspberries and trying to figure out why there's a "p" in raspberry.

Last night, I went to see a children's summer theater production of Camelot.  The production was very good, the singers not horrible, the set was nice and used well, the staging pretty good (except the times where the kids just stood there for minutes on end talking and talking and doing nothing else ::)).  Overall, the production was worth going to.

The show itself, however...for some reason, i just don't like it and I don't know why. :-\ The songs are good (and I love the scores to Brigadoon and On a Clear Day..., so it's not Lerner and Loewe).  It's just one of life's imponderables.

Hey Case ~ I know a few posts ago, someone was saying you ought to put a photo from The Brain as your avatar. Is there any way to transfer (no doubt there is a more technical computer term for that) a photo from The Brain website or bk's myspace (he's got The Brain photos streaming across there) -- or no?

Very possibly - but I just don't know how to get it to fit the size qualifications for an "avatar"...

Well, the late summer ritual has begun again. I thought this year it would not happen or at least not happen in August but no such luck. Due to ineptitude (10 years worth) on the part of some unnamed people, my department has to work on Saturdays until the middle of October so for the next two and half months I will be at my desk on Saturday and I don't mean my desk in the apartment. It's nice for the paycheck (I don't get comp time, I get overtime) but after ten years of this crap the money becomes less and less alluring. It all goes into my IRA anyway so I can't even spend it (until I'm 70 and a half).

Back to the grindstone.

Good morning, all!  I'm off to Toyland today, then to the Post Office, and later tonight, to BUKOWSICAL.  I haven't heard from my friend Matthew, so I hope he's still on tonight's schedule with me.

I have no other news.

My first memory of a standing ovation was for Carol Channing in the Houston Grand Opera Tour of HELLO DOLLY! with Alix Korey, Florence Lacey, and Leroy Reams, 1978, or so.  Of course, we now know that Ms Channing's ex-husband was the instigator for all those ovations, but I must say, I saw every performance as an usher in Cincinnati and she deserved them.

It was so hot here during the night that every time I woke up during the night, I was aware that my central A/C was running, something that rarely happens during the night and early morning hours.

They're predicting another near-100 day today after the last three have been 102, 104, and 104 respectively.

I hate summer.

My first memory of a spontaneous standing ovation was during MY FAIR LADY which I saw on Broadway in 1958. My memory is hazy about which number occasioned it, but if I had to bet, I'd say it was "Get Me to the Church on Time." I remember it happened because I turned to my uncle and said, "I can't see anything any more." He answered, "They'll sit down in a minute."

As for movies getting applause, it wasn't common in my little town growing up, but I can remember being in NYC and being surprised how much applause THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT generated. Not just at the numbers, but when audience favorites would come on the screen, there was just this HUGE ovation. Both of Garland's segements (the Rooney/Garland sequence and Garland's solo sequence) got heavy applause throughout.

I especially enjoyed the sequence from the MGM 25th Anniversary lunch as the camera panned across the array of stars while they were eating. Some folks generated no recognition, and others like Angela Lansbury and Katharine Hepburn got HUGE ovations.

I'll be back in a bit. Last weekend was tax-free weekend in NC, and I bought a reasonably cheap desktop computer to use as a back-up. It has Windows Vista on it, so I want to set the computer up and see if I can make heads or tails of the new operating system. If I like it, I may swap it out for the computer I'm using now.

Fingers crossed for an easy set-up.

When I worked, I naturally lived for summer because of the (usually) extended vacation time (Some summer I had to be in school to keep my teaching credentials up-to-date). But now that I live in a perpetual "summer," it's my least favorite time of the year. It actually has nothing to offer positively for me that I can't get in the other months especially without the added expense of electricity to run the A/C, etc.

My complaints about summer mostly have to do with the heat.  I don't handle it well physically.  I should probably say the humidity. I actually did ok in Phoenix, but here, it's just oppressive.

The new computer is still working out its kinks. You know how these new computers keep loading programs and checking out the system while you're trying to do work. Kind of maddening actually because it seems things are moving slowly when they're actually just opening up so you CAN work later.

Vista will take some time to be comfortable.

I think I just don't want to deal with the heat any more. I'm not a big outdoor person anyway (the things I love to do are indoors), but when I have to do chores/work outside, I want to be able to do it as comfortably as possible. This kind of heat and exhausting humidity is just numbing. Also contributes to my being in a very bad mood for weeks on end.

Dog Bosco is now in the hands of the vet clinic, about to go under the knife...or whatever they use to extract a bad tooth.

I don't mind saying that I am most nervous, even though it is a simple procedure, cause they always have that paper you have to sign to make you  aware that the pet could pass away while under anesthesia.

Anyway, I can pick him up later this afternoon.

Alas, I probably should take it easy around the Reservoir today - and in the near future - at least until whatever is flaring up in my right hip/leg stops flaring up.  I've had issues with sciatica before, but there are signs that I actually may be developing rheumatoid arthritis in my right hip. :-\

In any case, I'm really trying to be more active and more conscientious about my diet lately.  And, yes, I want/need to lose those pesky 10-15 pounds I've been trying to lose the past three years.  -But at least I haven't gained any since the last "drop".  So that's good.

In any case... It's still a beautiful day here in NYC. :)

I guess the love for summer starts very young, when you would get the whole summer off from school.  Now, summer is great if you're at a nice resort, the beach, even the park.  But for having to get around the hot, sticky City, the subways, the general grime that a humid day seems to paste onto everything -- not my cup of tea, either.  I'd be happy if it were a nice even 65-70 degrees year round.

summer is great if you're at a nice resort, the beach, even the park.

I've often noticed how advertisers think that that's how women spend their summers! All leisure! (Maybe they're all teachers with nothing else to do.)

After living on the East Coast for a few years I came to dread summers. Like DR MATTH, I kept saying, "I hate summer." I don't mind summer quite as much these days, but I always welcome the first sweater-donning of the season. "Yay! Fall!"

DR Juls, I mean, Julie ~ I had a dream about posting on HHW last night -- or I think it was this morning after I woke up early (a long story regarding Deuce and a skunk -- and it wasn't Pepe, Francois) and tried to go back to sleep after posting a few musings this earky am. Any way, I was posting a long (surprise) post about you -- a really funny story or so I thought in my dream (but can't remember it now) and I kept referring to you as Juls (Jewels) -- like Juls said this and Juls did that in the story.  That's all.

In re-reading that, it's most lame (and not the gold one) -- but I guess my point is I will now always be thinking of you as Juls when I see your posts. And if you've always hated Juls, I'm sorry I brought it up.

Vibes to BK for a great sublet!

BK ~ Do check out nycityliving.com -- you just type in what you're looking for (location, price, date, etc.) and then they get back to you -- plus they have photos and info posted about the sublets on the site. I know I was grumbling (some might say ranting) about the process, but Yaniv, my contact really was good about getting back to me (I reallly was a pest that week -- a call or an email every day with some sort of question and he promptly got back to me -- but his fee rewarded him more than enough considering it was just phone calls, emails and a fax or two).  But the place is great according to Case, the owner has been very nice and talk about location -- I told Yaniv I wanted something close or with easy access to Theatre Row on 42nd street -- and it ends up the place is on 44th and is literally around the corner from the Acorn.  Of course, make sure utilities are included -- or adjust the price accordingly and figure in the fee -- the price listed does not include all of that. Tell Yaniv, Karen sent you -- on second thought, maybe not.  He may run the other way.

It's white and the older design which I think looks like an egg -- mine is a '02 that I got in January of '03 as a protest to the talk of invading Iraq to look for weapons of mass oil consumption -- I know I shouldn't turn a car choice into a political discussion, but that is a true story. Everything DR MusicGuy says about his, I say ditto about mine. It runs like a top and I'm gonna drive it until it falls apart on me. What day do you arrive in NYC, Miss Karen?   I want to make sure to have the flour and chiclets ready for your arrival.

Of course, I'm not JRAND and do not possess a Dream-o-matic in any model, but I would think that Julie's preference for things sparkly would make you think of jewels.

Most of the teachers I know either get summer jobs or take classes toward higher degrees.

Yes. And so many of the teachers I used to know complained about low pay and couldn't afford the resorts or extended trips to the beach. Until I moved to the East Coast I'd never met anyone who took month-long vacations. I know a number of people here who do so. My point was that advertisers (and clothing manufacturers) seem to think that women (at least) vacation all summer long. I used to have trouble finding business clothes during the summer; women's summer clothes are all swimsuits and tank tops and such.

Of course, NOW I know I should go shopping with JRAND!

BUKOWSICAL BULLENTIN/ALERT:

(Boo-Key just called from where they're a doing one of those al fresco deals and asked me to post this notice in case any HHWers were considering getting tickets to see him the days he's to be the lawyer.)

As of today, he WON'T be the lawyer on Tuesday the 14th, but WILL BE the lawyer tomorrow (Sunday, the 12th) at the matinee. And then he is still down to be the lawyer for the closing performance.

Not part of the bulletin, just my editor's note: Shoot, I was hoping he was calling to tell me Mr Ego Man Actor's conscience got the best of him and he decided to go be in sis's wedding after all ... no such luck, dang-nab-it!

Actually, to be fair, Cason was saying it's hard to wish the guy away because according to Cason the guy is really great in the part... so I'll cut the carping and wish them all a rousing break-a-leg in a stellar opening night!!

Go BUKOWSICAL !!

In the last episode of Season 2, the crown jewels are stolen. Right up your alley, I'd say. Have you noticed how many references you make to jewels? :)

So...

Has anyone given any thought to the gathering(s) that will take place on September 30?

I'm guessing there might be a dinner that night between Such Good Friends and The Brain from Planet X.

And I'm guessing there might be some sort of soiree after The Brain from Planet X - which may or may not combine with the closing night festivities for the show.  -And when does The Brain have to strike and load out?  That night?  or the next morning?

Just wondrin', plannin'.

I believe we're going to luck out and be able to strike on the 1st, since there's no show that day.  And yes, we will have some sort of soiree somewhere for our closing night and you're all invited.  Of course, there's always the chance, I suppose, that we might get asked to extend for a performance or two - not sure what I'd do about that, given that I have an early morning flight home on October 1st, and a fundraiser to put together in short order.  And other than our showtimes, I'm completely available for whatever fun stuff people want to do.

Back from various and sundried divings about in my motor car.  I went to Amoeba to kill time but time wasn't there, so I got a CD instead.  I still have the ability to be intrigued by an album cover, and am I glad I was - I was in the Brazilian section looking for CDs of Sylvia Telles, and I just happened to see a CD by a group called BR6, that said Jobim and Gershwin.  So, I looked at the track list, but the thing that really caught my eye was the line that said it was an acapella album, and that despite what you think you may hear, nothing other than the voices of BR6 appear on the album.  Well, I got into the car and put it on and the first track, a combo of a Jobim song and Rhapsody In Blue, was absolute genius.  You'd think you were hearing percussion and bass, but no, it's all human voices doing amazing things in amazing arrangements and I absolutely love this album.

This unlikely musical hit had several interesting things about its original production.  It was directed by someone better known for directing classic straight plays.  Its choreographer had, several years before created the choreography for a classic musical and would repeat that chore in the film version of said musical.  A slightly lower-level person on the creative team would go on to become a major figure in the musical theater just a few short years later.  The musical's cast included a star who would not appear on Broadway again for over twenty years.  Said star also had a bit of bad luck just a few years prior to coming back to Broadway, said bad luck being well-publicized.  Another member of the company would, just a few years later, go on to star in a hugely popular TV series.  Another member of the company would go on to movie stardom a few years later when said company member starred in an iconic film.  This musical also suffered a curious fate.

So:

Name the musical and its director.

Name the choreographer and said choreographer's few year's prior classic musical.

Name the slightly lower-level member of the creative team who would go on to become a major musical theater person.

Name the show's star, name the star's return to Broadway vehicle, and tell us the well-publicized bad luck incident involving the star.

Name the company member who would go on to star in a hugely popular TV series and name the series.

Name the company member who would achieve movie stardom a few years later by starring in an iconic film and name the film.

Name the curious fate that befell the musical.

Remember, do NOT post your answers to the site, send them to me at bruce@haineshisway.com.  Good luck to one and all and also all and one.

DR Ginny ~ Oh, yes! Definitely, ALL of them. That's my MO whenever I'm around for any of his plays or musicals.  If I'm in town, I see everyone that he does.  (Bukowsical's loss, they could have made some money off me...  :)). Every performance is different as we all know with live theatre,  I can't get enough of seeing him onstage and I like to see how each different audience reacts. I'd be there for The Brain's opening night, but I signed up to Asst. Direct for our theatre's opener -- Suburb -- as my practicum for my master before I knew The Brain dates (rats!), but that's our final weekend, so you never know -- if they've got it rolling along and I can get someone to fill in for me backstage those final performances (we're real short-handed crew wise),
I just may head on out (I'm flying out on SW so it's usually a piece of cake to switch flights around) -- then Jet Blue back with Case early on Oct. 1.

They just left Portland!!!  Since this site is so powerful I’m wishing Bryan, Craig, Ioana & the sugar gliders SAFE & EASY TRAVEL VIBES!

While I’m at it I wishing my mother-in-law feel better vibes!  She had a fall last week, was ok but sore.  The last few days her chronic cough became rather severe.  I suspect one or both of these caused her to have difficulty breathing since her back has been hurting (back pain in the right location can feel like you have been slugged & take away your breath-bruised ribs from coughing also make it difficult to breathe).  She wouldn’t take her inhaler ahead of the prescribed time  ::) & she wouldn’t let my brother-in-law go get her some oxygen so he called the paramedics.  They sprayed her with a mist of the same ingredients that are in her inhaler & took her to the hospital.  Her EKG was fine & she is feeling better, thanks to the mist.  Now we are waiting for a report.

There was a time it said what these were when I put the arrow over them.

It's usually used to express shock on HHW (which seems unnecessary since it would really only be faux shocked... I mean, really, can any HHWer truly be shocked by anything anymore? ;D)

We do need more icons (DR Pogue just gasped) -- a little yellow face with batting eyes would be good (but I bet DR MusicGuy would overuse that one), one with a little yellow face sweating, I mean, perspiring, a little yellow face eating a Levain/Lavain (sp?) cookie ...

I bought a new computer last year and was so annoyed at all the "kinks" that I went back to using my old one. The new one now sits in a box, shoved aside. Who has time to deinstall all that cr*p? I think I'll buy an Apple.

All of that sluggish start-up loading and updating seems to be over with, and now it's operating beautifully. Very fast and very smooth. I'm going to enjoy using this computer.

DR Elmo ~ What are you doing on here? Shouldn't you be getting all dolled up for tonight's Bukowsical opening?  Give Book-Key a bug hug from his mother. Wish I could be there to go with you ... and lock one of those actors in the bathroom just prior... I'm only kidding (as she adjusts the halo perched on the pair of little horns atop her smiling face)

True to form I put on a DVD and fell asleep for about twenty minutes - then got a call from our very own Mr. Kevin Spirtas, and we had a nice chat.  Then I went back and watched what I'd slept through, and now I'm hooked on the film.

Next, I put in another Rathbone/Holmes film - THE SCARLET CLAW. This DVD had a five minute discussion on restoring the Holmes films to DVD. It could have been three times longer than it was, but I still enjoyed seeing it again.

All of that sluggish start-up loading and updating seems to be over with, and now it's operating beautifully. Very fast and very smooth. I'm going to enjoy using this computer.

And I then started THE SCARLET CLAW but with the audio commentary track on. I had listened to this once before, but it's a very enjoyable track as the commentator identifies all of the supporting and even bit players and talks about their links to other Holmes films. Quite interesting and well researched and delivered.

Not just more patient.

Part of my problem, aside from not being mechanically-inclined, is that I spent many years in software. That's SOFTware, not hardware. I'm from the old days, when software got debugged and there was at least an attempt at hardcopy documentation. I am appalled at some of the stuff that Microsoft releases. There's just no excuse for it. They have the money, they have the resources. They choose to release software that hasn't been fully tested or debugged. This is a business decision. I also have major design issues with their products. Software doesn't have to be so difficult to use. As a former programmer and software designer, when I have a problem I at least have a clue where to start. I really feel for the non-savvy users. I just don't have much tolerance for poor quality anymore and I don't feel that a computer user should have to know a great deal about their system; it should be easy.

END OF RANT.

Do I sound like BK or something?

Der Brucer may disagree with me.

I'm just bidin' my time, 'cause that's the kind of guy I'm.  Just perused an unfinished copy of the NYMF program and must say that The Brain has the smallest ad in there - which actually kind of baffles me, given the cries of money woes.  Had I known we were the smallest, I might have popped for the next size, which is what everyone seems to have done.  Oh, well - no one tells you these things, then there's no way to know, is there?  Well, we'll  just have to be the little show that could.

Good morning dear DR Ciwwa ..... I guess I hadn't realized that you were a "fellow" Prius driver.  I'm on my second one now, and I've never had a car that I liked any better, as far as performance, solidness, quiet insulation, no problems, and of course mileage.

I wonder if any other H/Ks or DRs are also in the Prius fraternity (or sorority, if you prefer) ?

I'm on my second Prius too. I had a 2002 that I drove for 2 1/2 years before I decided to trade up to the new body style.  I loved the old one, but this one is better for me, I like the hatchback

Well, you're speaking from a much more knowledgeable position than I'm in. I have somehow managed to be self-taught in the various electronics I like, and things have worked for me with a slight learning curve. I do marvel how programs keep getting bigger and bigger (in terms of space needed to load and use) instead of making them sleeker and effecient. The answer always seems to be: just add more memory and a larger hard drive. Well, I don't like that! Consequently, I rarely buy any new software for these computers. I use what I already have and just keep putting it back on each computer I buy.

For example, I use Word 2000. I don't have the complete Office suite. I don't need those other components. Word 2000 works beautifully for me, and it's been added to every computer I've owned since I bought/upgraded it.

Me! Me! My little egg car is most beloved.

It is the best car I've ever had -- and my favorite (edging out my college days' VW beetle, which come to think of it looked like an egg, too. )

My 2002 was blue. I loved it. I thought it felt like I was driving a little eco-mobile...when I went to my 2005, I felt like I was in a sports car!

I had a crazy day. Paul and I ate at a great Chinese restaurant I hadn't been to yet.  Then I dropped my car off at the dealership and we went to a great antique mall where I made a very fun purchase (see below) we went back to get my car and they hadn't started.  Rather than getting mad I said "Oh, you haven't started, do you know how long it will be?"   The service manager chuckled and said "We can start right away, if you'll just give us the keys"   Oh man....so I left the keys and we took off for awhile and got the car later.

Here's my purchase....it's brand new in the box. I paid a whopping $5.00 for it. I can't wait to start making whoville waffles!

And of course Bob Crewe, among his many accomplishments, once dated (at least for a magazine layout) Miss June Kenney.

I believe this album would appeal most to JRand56 and Rodzinski.

Good Afternoon!  Good Evening!

Now that was a walk!

Once I left the apartment, I decided to walk up 145th to Broadway in order to catch the 1 Train.  Then since I had just missed the train - I saw people heading out of the station, and could hear the train pulling away - I decided to keep walking up 145th to the river where I ended up at Riverbank State Park.  What a cool place!

I can't believe I haven't explored this Park in the two years that I've lived here - just five blocks away!  There's a restaurant, a cultural center, a roller-skating/ice-skating rink, a football field, a running track, picnic grounds, an indoor pool, an outdoor pool, a gym with lots of treadmills and a weight room, an amphitheater, etc., etc., etc.  And since was all surprisingly clean and well kept.  -I guess that since it's run by the State and not the City.  ;)  In any case...

I've been looking for a running track nearby for a while, and I'm so happy I found this one today.  And I can also get some more practice time in on my Land-Rollers at their rink.  *And the restaurant had a pretty decent menu, and a full bar!

And the views of New Jersey and the George Washington Bridge from RSP are amazing!  -Next time I'll bring my camera.

Illegal trade in animals would not exist it they was not a demand for them. No matter how many steps removed - the practice is sustained by people wishing to own exotic pets.

I have very few "hobby horses". (I don't even like those in captivity).

I am enjoying a quiet evening at home. My roommate is out at a movie with a friend. Killbot is snoozing on the couch. Lucy, normally the spastic one is alternating between curling up with me and on the rug, and Summer is batting around a crumpled piece of paper. I am catching up on last night's tv, first Monk which I enjoyed a lot, and now Psych.

I have been having a great Saturday. Started the day with brunch with Rodzinski at the Film Center Cafe. Then we went over to Spoiled Brats, a pet store that gives space to an animal rescue organization. They had kittens galore! I had seen some online at petfinders.org that I was interested but fell in love with several others that I saw.

DR Jeanne - All that "Microsoft crap" is the main reason I switched to a Mac a few years ago.  I just got tired of it taking anywhere from three to five minutes for my computer to start up - and that was already after I had disabled and/or uninstalled all the "crap" I didn't need.  -And once Windows became soooo internet dependent... Ugh!  I'm not a "power user", and it seemed that Microsoft was "forcing" people to buy so many other peripheral programs in order to fully "enjoy" their computers.  Yes, there are still sometimes I start up my PC laptop, but those are few and far between.  *And I keep thinking that Apple should come out with an ad/promo featuring theatre personnel: When I was doing She Loves Me last fall at Arena Stage, there was one break where we counted 16(!) iBooks and MacBooks being used in the Green Room during breaks.  :)

And maybe one showing the other set of cheeks - also for MusicGuy.

Since Killbot has responded so well to having Summer and Lucy around, we've decided (we'll my roomate is permitting me) to get a kitten. I think it's much easier for her to adapt to a little one than an adult. I decided to go with one of the kittens I had specifically come to look at rather than the others I saw. I picked one of a trio of 12 week old orange tabbies, Tom, Dick, and Harry. I'm not sure which one I picked. The other kittens were younger and more wide eyed in their cuteness, but the one I picked was calmer, up to date in his shots and very socialized. The others were clearly newer rescues. I think this guy will be a good match for Killbot. Here's a link to his webpage:

You may want to chill the dough a bit before baking to help control the "spread".  Just depends upon how finely processed the soynut butter is.

Some pet-stores here sell pets way too young (under 3 weeks!) and the animals have had no time to be "curbed" by the mother which make them so "undiciplined"! When caught, those stores are closed for good and fined 30 000 euros!

Summer vacation time is awful; so many people abandon their pets, and shelters are over crowded....

Lovely kittens!

Something must be in the air this week... Or maybe I just need to get some "snarkiness" out of my system...

I was just watching my roommate and his boyfriend wash their dinner dishes.  First they squirted a good amount of Palmolive in the pan.  Then they filled the pan with water.  And kept filling it until almost all of the bubbles stopped.  Then they took the scrubber out.  While the water kept running.

Sheesh!  Someone needs to teach you boys how to wash dishes.

-Did I say that out loud?  Yes, I did.  :-\

In any case, I guess since we're not paying for water here...  But still...

I'll apologize once they're back downstairs.

And I had a weird - in a good way - "moment" today...

I was sitting in Columbus Circle by the fountains listening to the first track of Eldar's "re-imagination" CD (via my iPod).  Such a cool track - it switches been 4/4 and 7/4, and he manages to swing and groove even in the odd-meter sections.  Well, after the track was done, I started it again to give it a closer listen.  And as I sat there listening and marveling at the prodigious technique, talent and genius of it all, I started to cry.  And once I realized that some people were looking at me, I stopped crying, but still, I got a bit teary-eyed.

Again, weird, but in a good way.

DR Jose ~ In case you didn't see it I was going to cut and paste this story on the internet today (but alas, you're aware of my computer-challenged problems) about the conflict with the African dummers and new residents in Harlem.  They're making the drummers (who have been doing this since the 60s) move further into the park because the new folks are complaining about the "noise."  It seems sad that folks move to a place for the character and charm and history, but then not really -- they really want to change stuff to suit themselves ....

Subtitles - never a problem here.  Within a few minutes I forget I'm reading. I was pleased that the local cinema showed La Vie En Rose with the subtitled version.

I had never seen or heard of Marc Warren (Danny Blue) prior to HUSTLE, but his performance here certainly makes me interested in seeing his other work.

Thanks to all the the wonderful HHW vibes Dog Bosco is happy, healthy and currently lounging in the back yard in a drugged out haze. He has more painkillers in him then Lindsay Lohan.

Freddy seems to be keeping watch on him.

It turned out that Bosco had two broken teeth...both are now gone.

It cost me $463.00 to learn that bones and cow hooves are not good for dogs teeth. They break them. For now on it is only pig ears for this doggie!

Robert Vaughn's character is intriguing--older man, very distinguished, just perfect as the "roper"! And he is sooo smooth!

One of my favorite scenes: when Danny sits down in a bar next to the young grifter and lifts item after item off him--his wallet, his pen, etc. Priceless!

Anyone who hasn't seen this series is in for a real treat and a great deal of fun.

Now for some dinner and a Bollywood movie...tonights feature is:

YEH RAASTEY HAIN PYAR KE (1963)

I know nothing about the plot, I just liked the way Sunil Dutt looked in the pilot uniform on the front cover of the DVD box...so I bought it.

Next came Luis Buñuel's THE MILKY WAY which certainly held my interest even when I didn't understand all the religious allusions he was throwing at me every thirty seconds. It's surreal, of course, as so many of his films are, and there are some funny moments amid all the lecturing on the evils of restrictive dogma of the Catholic Church, but when all is said and done, if you need a playbill to understand all these heresies he's using as symbols or illustrations of his points, it's too enigmatic for the casual consumer. Or at least for THIS casual consumer.

Fortunately the Criterion disc offers Ian Christie's illuminating video essay on the film which helps clear up a lot of the unfathomable nature of the events in the film. Didn't make me like it much better, but at least it was made a lot clearer that he was actually doing in the film what I thought he was doing.

Hmm... I stand corrected.  And humbled.  However...

I checked a couple of sites for the correct spelling of the title, and, lo and behold, it appears both ways depending which site you look at.  A couple of the reviews of the L.A. production have it spelled with the "k".  And both spellings come up in Google.

DR Cillaliz - Here's the one from from "The Joy of Cooking" (1997 edition).  It's a basic "sauce" version.  I'd use it as a guideline.  You can adjust the amounts and types of cheese, as well as the seasonings to your taste.  -A lot of Southern recipes also add mustard (dry and/or prepared) and sugar.  -I don't like mine sweet.

Preheat the oven to 350F.  Grease a 1-1/2 quart deep baking dish.

Bring to a rolling boil in a medium saucepan:
6 cups water
1-1/2 teaspoons salt

Add and cook until just tender:
2 cups elbow macaroni (8 ounces)

Drain and remove to a large bowl.  Have ready:
2-1/4 cups grated sharp Cheddar or Colby Cheese

Melt in a large saucepan over medium-low heat:
2 tablespoons butter

Whisk in and cook, whisking, for 3 minutes:
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Gradually whisk in:
2 cups whole or skim milk

Stir in:
1/2 medium onion, minced
1 bay leaf
1/4 teaspoon sweet paprika

Simmer gently, stirring often, for 15 minutes.  Remove from the heat and stir in two-thirds of the cheese.  Season with:
Salt and ground black pepper to taste

Stir in the macaroni.  Pour half of the mixture into the baking dish and sprinkle with half of the remaining cheese.  Top with the remaining macaroni and then the remaining cheese.  Melt in a small skillet over medium heat:
1 tablespoon butter

Add and toss to coat:
1/2 cup fresh breadcrumbs

Sprinkle over the top of he macaroni.  Bake until the breadcrumbs are lightly browned, about 30 minutes.  Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.  Serves 4-6 as a main course.

2 cups elbow macaroni (8 ounces)

Drain and remove to a large bowl.  Have ready:
2-1/4 cups grated sharp Cheddar or Colby Cheese

Melt in a large saucepan over medium-low heat:
2 tablespoons butter

Whisk in and cook, whisking, for 3 minutes:
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Gradually whisk in:
2 cups whole or skim milk

Stir in:
1/2 medium onion, minced
1 bay leaf
1/4 teaspoon sweet paprika

Simmer gently, stirring often, for 15 minutes.  Remove from the heat and stir in two-thirds of the cheese.  Season with:
Salt and ground black pepper to taste

Stir in the macaroni.  Pour half of the mixture into the baking dish and sprinkle with half of the remaining cheese.  Top with the remaining macaroni and then the remaining cheese.  Melt in a small skillet over medium heat:
1 tablespoon butter

Add and toss to coat:
1/2 cup fresh breadcrumbs

Sprinkle over the top of he macaroni.  Bake until the breadcrumbs are lightly browned, about 30 minutes.  Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.  Serves 4-6 as a main course.

Hmmm, layering sounds easier.

What a waste! She did not prove that song right!

Thank you! I really enjoyed that performance. Yes, what a waste is right!

Or here is Oprah's favorite Macaroni & Cheese from Delilah Winder who runs Bluezette in Philadelphia.  I made it once just to see what all the fuss was about.  Alas, I didn't think it was worth all the fuss - no matter what Oprah says.  The recipe is meant to serve 6 to 8 people, however, it's very rich - 12 eggs, 6 cups of half-and-half and 2 sticks of butter.  It works better in smaller portions as a side dish.  Or a very small main dish.  With lots of vegetables on the side to help keep you arteries clear.  ;)

This is how the recipe appeared in the Philadelphia Daily News, however, I've appended the directions from her cookbook "Delilah's Everyday Soul - Southern Cooking With Style".

2 lbs elbow macaroni
1 1/2 quarts half-and-half
3 cups sharp yellow cheddar cheese
2 cups extra-sharp white cheddar cheese
1 1/2 cups mozzarella cheese
1 cup asiago cheese
1 cup monterey jack cheese
1 cup muenster cheese
1 cup Velveeta cheese
1/2 lb butter
1 dozen eggs
1 pinch salt
1 tablespoon black pepper

1. Cook macaroni according to box instructions.
2. Melt butter, crack eggs into a bowl, beat until egg yolks and white are blended well.
3. Grate all cheeses (except the Velveeta).
4. With the cooked elbow macaroni still warm, mix in the Velveeta cheese, melted butter and a 1/2 quart of the half-and-half.
5. Blend until creamy and smooth.
6. Add the remaining half-and-half, all grated cheeses, eggs, salt and pepper.
7. Blend all ingredients until smooth and creamy.
8. Bake in your favorite baking dish (one with deep sides, rectangular works) at 325 degrees for 1 hour, until golden brown.
9. Tip: Make sure all ingredients are mixed well and your oven has been preheated.
10. For an extra kick, add some additional grated yellow cheese on top midway into the baking process.

-OR-

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.

Bring a large saucepan of salted water to a boil.  Add the macaroni and cook until still slightly al dente, about 10 minutes.  Drain and set aside to keep warm.

Whisk the eggs in a large bowl until frothy.

Combine the Velveeta, butter, and 2 cups of the half-and-half in a large bowl.  Add the warm macaroni, tossing until the cheese has melted and the mixture is smooth.  Add the remaining half-and-half, 3 cups of the sharp yellow cheddar cheese, the remaning grated cheeses, and salt and pepper, tossing until completely combined.

Pour the mixture into a 9x13-inch casserole or baking dish and bake for about 30 minutes.  Sprinkle with the remaining 1 cup of sharp yellow cheddar and bake until golden brown on top, about 30 minutes more.

Well, back from our opening night - and a nice apres-theatre snack with DR Elmo and his friend Matthew.

Opening night was sold out (we had taken out a row of chairs to accommodate our floor mics, but ended up putting them back in).  We were running about 10 minutes behind, as our audience was still filing in.  The audience seemed to really like it - but I noticed the laughs didn't come as easily as some places had in LA (obviously, we aren't performing in a bar...) - but the crowd did get more of the literary humor.

All in all, I think we made a good impression - Elmo wasn't a fan (I'm sure he'll have more) - but the cast still needs to realize that they don't have mics taped to their faces anymore and can't belt out everything, especially not over people's solos.  If the audience can't hear the lyrics, this show is lost.

Being backstage as the "running crew" (I ran the fog machine and helped with a couple of wayward costume changes), I have to say that actors have no idea what the crew does for them.  Lots of diva-ish and ego-induced energy floating around this evening, which I really have never been a big proponent of...

Yet, I better hop into bed, as we have a noon show tomorrow and I'm playing the lawyer (one of Elmo's favorite bits tonight).

-The inclusion of Velveeta among the cheeses, although, "traditional", seems out of place among all the other cheeses.  I'd rather add some American Cheese, some more cheddar and a heavy dash of salt.  :-\

Or here is something closer to what I've come across at many a "covered dish" potluck:

8 ounces elbow macaroni
1 to 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese
3 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 cup milk
1 egg
1/2 cup buttered bread crumbs

Boil macaroni in salted water, following package directions. Drain under running cold water. Cover bottom of a 2-quart baking dish with layer of macaroni, a layer of cheese, bits of butter, salt and pepper.

Continue layers until all ingredients are used, ending with a cheese layer.

Whisk milk and egg together, pour over the top, cover with buttered bread crumbs, and bake in a 350° oven for 25 to 35 minutes, until browned and cooked through.
Serves 4 to 6.

DR Jose, the show is BUKOWSICAL! with an exclamation point, according to the cover of the playbill, and on the back cover is the website www.bukowsical.com; I don't see a Bukowskical anywhere in sight.

If you want to hear a lot of songs giving you rhymes to words such as
clit
tit
shit
fuck
suck
and so on, and if you could actually hear the lyrics, you might enjoy the show.  I wanted to like it.

I did not.

It felt like a MAD Magazine sketch that outstayed its welcome and I thought the staging either really good or really sloppy.  There was a funny song extolling LA since it's common knowledge that Los Angelenos can't do musicals and it was one generating no rhymes on the above-mentioned words.  I think the friends and families of the writers and the cast loved it.  Maybe, if it had kept its barroom staging and I were drunk, I'd laugh my ass off.  There might have been a rhyme for "ass" that I missed.  It was hard to hear, the space is crap and there are huge poles blocking the view.

I loved my time with Cason, Matthew, DR Julie (surprise!) and my friend Andy who showed up.  Before and after Bukowsical!

Then there are all the variations:

Polka Dot Mac & Cheese - Top with Pepperoni Slices during the last 15-20 minutes of baking time.

Ham & Mac & Cheese - Stir in a cup of diced ham chunks before baking.

Mexican Mac & Cheese - Stir in a cup of salsa and/or a can of Ro-Tel and/or a can of Diced Green Chiles before baking, plus some chili powder.

Cheeseburger Mac & Cheese - Brown a 1/2 to 1 pound of ground beef, and stir in before baking.

Philly Mac & Cheese - Saute some onions (and peppers (green and/or red)) along with some ground beef, then add to the dish before baking.

Etc., etc., etc.

*And if you want a truly decadent "Italian" style:

In place of the cheese sauce, just use 16 oz. of Marscapone Cheese, and add some Parmesan Cheese.  Usually, the heat from the macaroni will be enough to melt the cheese - which is basically heavy-heavy cream.

And then, of course, for day old Mac & Cheese... There's always the deep-fried route.  :)  Courtesy of Alton Brown.

Leftover baked macaroni and cheese, refrigerated for at least overnight
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon cayenne
1 egg beaten with 2 ounces water
1 cup panko bread crumbs
Oil for deep frying, preheated to 375 degrees

Cut refrigerated macaroni and cheese into slices or bite size pieces.

Season the flour with salt, pepper and cayenne. Dredge each piece through the flour and gently tap off excess. Dip in the egg wash and then coat with the bread crumbs.
Allow them to rest for 5 minutes so the crust can set.

Very carefully drop into the oil and fry until golden brown. Remove to a baking sheet fitted with a rack and rest for 2 minutes before serving.

It's easy to get laughs from friends and family and loud drunkards in LA - the trick is to get them from the regular folks.  I saw Bukowsical here in LA and its pre-bar incarnation.  I told its composer that while I thought some of it was funny, it went on too long and I found its smug, superior attitude a little wearying.  When I helped them with casting and other stuff, they solicited my opinion, and I gave it to them - it doesn't sound like they addressed any of it, and I even sensed then that they didn't really want to hear it.   It does sound, from what I understand, perfect for the Fringe, which does tend to respond to that sort of material.  It's not that the authors aren't talented, they are, but when I saw it it just wasn't the sort of thing I respond to, although I like a good revue as much as anyone.

Wishing Cason many not-literal break-a-legs for tomorrow's show.  Of course, we'd all love to know who the divas are, although I pretty much can guess at least one of them.
