Hello, HHWers! Sorry I've been so very E&T the past week. We had a great time on vacation. I did even start to catch up...slogged through about 2.5 days, but could never get through everything. I'll try to do so today. It's good to be back! :)

It did feel quite a bit cooler when I went out to get the newspaper this morning, and I did not hear my A/C constantly running through the night either, so that's a hopeful sign that it won't be over 100 today.

I've got two things to finish today DVD-wise. I will finish HOW TO STEAL A MILLION that I got about halfway through last night. Then, I'll finish the special features on THE MILKY WAY Criterion set I began last night.

Tonight will be HOT FUZZ, unquestionably.
As for the rest of the afternoon's viewing, I'll probably watch THE TOAST OF NEW ORLEANS since it's been sitting out for days waiting to be played. I watched the features on the disc but not the film itself.

There's a new episode of ENTOURAGE tonight, too, which I should be able to watch "live." Otherwise, nothing else on broadcast TV to interest me tonight.

Good morning, all! I slept quite badly: I still cannot tell if the dreams were about the Three Musketeers or about reading Les Troi Mousquetaires, one of my favorite novel. I seem to recall a bus, perhaps Ron Raines, whom I will be seeing today, and duels. Oh, a discussion of Constance Bonancieux and Dumas' name derivatives!
I, of course, blame DR Jose for all of this, and I probably blame BUKOWSICAL! as well. Since I still have two other Fringe items to see, I hope that last night's show is not the zenith after suffering through what I hope will prove the nadir. FOR THE LOVE OF TIFFANY remains my Fringe highmark. Bring it back!
Today, I need to deliver a CD to Mr Ron Raines, stop at Staples to have three Library of Congress Jerome Kern and Victor Herbert research/finding guides bound,, and plan my DC research for Tuesday.

Our stage manager was sick last night....and will also be gone today....which in her case is a small loss.
Sandi our costumer filled in for her. And the man playing the father of the boy was telling her...."you have to set up my folding chair here for the Abduction scene, and open the window, and give me my popcorn box....and then when I'm done don't forget to close the window and fold up the chair....and take back the box."
Guess he can't unfold, open, and pick up and then fold, close, and set down.....

My french toast was surprisingly good and the indented swirl from the wafflemaker was really fun. I'll have to try to grill a sandwhich with it some time, but it's really more of a mold, so I may have to stick to my George Foreman grill for that one

Yes, I am encountering some of that. I went to get a new driver for my printer/scanner, and it appears the company isn't going to support it any farther. I have yet to try to print anything with the scanner I did install. I'll have to check that out later.

I had some problems with Vista. My latest was my Maxtor One Touch external hard drive. I downloaded the new software that's supposed to be compatible, but it really isn't completely compatible. Luckily there is a great back-up program in Vista and it works fine with the drive

My mother never did that, that I remember, but I did it the last time I made potato salad and she said it was the right way to do it.

For "basics", "The Joy of Cooking" - whichever edition happens to be handy. Then I will move on to Mark Bittman's "The Minimalist Cooks Everything". Then, if I'm feeling particularly curious, I'll check out one of Christopher Kimball's books based on his very detailed - and sometime overly-fussy - Cook's Illustrated approach.
For baking, "The Joy of Cooking"... then "Baking with Julia"... Then Nick Malgieri's cake cookbook.
For Italian - Marcella Hazan and Lidia Biastanich
For Indian - Madhur Jaffrey
Etc., etc., etc.

I've only had that happen once: JELLY'S LAST JAM. I've been in the monority about things like XANADU, and Bernadette Peters and Lauren Bacall winning undeserved Tonys for ANNIE GET YOUR GUN and WOMAN OF THE YEAR.
I don't think anyone around me thought such dreadful plays and musicals like the following were masterpieces in any way:

In the interest of purging, I am donating 3/4ths of my cookbooks. Most of them were given to me by my mother who loves to try out new recipes, (casserole, mostly) in the hopes that I will one day become domesticated.
So far it hasn't worked.
I will keep the old standbys...Joy of Cooking, Betty Crocker, and any specialty cookbooks, but for anything else, there's always the internet (or DR Jose!).

Ron Raines and I have been playing phone and shoe tag since Dec 26, 2006. Every year, when asked what I want for Christmas, I ask for a pair of sturdy British shoes, and this year - between his concerts, family, and THE GUIDING LIGHT and my calendar - we never find a time to arrive at the shoe store on Broadway and 83rd. The last time he tried to drag me there was the day I returned from unpacking the new office, so fatigued and pained that we rebooked. Yesterday he tried to set it up and I was in a meeting about 3 different jobs all afternoon, but I said I was free today. We just met at Harry's Shoes to find it closed on Sundays in August. He left me screaming on the corner of 83rd and Broadway, "I'll never get my shoes! Never!"

Just a quick hello. For the first time in years I have eaten a home made blintz-oh my it was tasty.
Craig is currently sorting through his stuff now & Bryan is checking if he has anything mixed with with Craig's things. Ioana has taken over Bryan's elementary school sweatshirt I had saved. It looks cute on her,.
Keith's mother is in the hospital with a cracked vertebrae. The emergency room doctor is spending more time trying to figure out why she has had vertigo most of her life. She declined an MRI. She is having an ultrasound this morning. We talked to her just before the test & she sounded much, much better than she did last night & in less pain.

(Actually, I have not seen it yet -- it was such a roller coaster of when he would or wouldn't be onstage in it, that I could never lock in on a date to see it in LA or NYC -- I'll book a flight to NYC or drive 6 1/2 hours to LA when there's a guarantee -- that's why I'm gonna be in the Acorn for every performance of The Brain during my week in NYC...)

Hello all -- back from the matinee.
Had about 140 people there this afternoon, which in a 200-person venue isn't bad for an afternoon show.
The show itself did hit the ol' 2nd performance slump - energy was all over the place and people weren't really focused.
The lawyer bit hit though - and I'm glad to have made my "unofficial" official NY debut (I'm saving my official NY debut for the Brain). So, all is well here in NY. We have the afternoon and tomorrow off - thank God!

Re the Roller Derby logo, they seem to be clever and have a handle on what they're doing in trying to identify a potentially profitable segment of the audience (straight men). It's certainly eye-catching.

Just got an e-mail from our costume designer - she's resigning from the project as she doesn't feel comfortable with the "scope" and "commitment" of the show and has too much on her plate, design-wise, for the fall. Wish she'd have said that weeks ago, really, but, oh, well. Now we're on the hunt for another costume designer - since costumes, lighting, and sets all came from the same place and as a team, I'm praying this doesn't impact the other two people - since I've gotten rough design ideas from the set gal and since the lighting guy is her fiance, hopefully we'll be okay. I wonder if NYMF is ever actually easy, or if I'm just blessed. It's the problem of staffing a show over the phone without actually meeting the people.

Can anyone inform me if it is worth to purchase the Canadian TV show SLINGS AND ARROWS? It is now available on DVD.
I loved all three series of the show, which I caught during the regular broadcasts before buying the DVDs. However, several DRs on this site gave it a "ho-hum so what" review after watching it. I still believe it was a brilliant and very funny look at something -dare I say it? - like the Stratford Ontario Shakespeare Festival.
I have no urge to see ROLLER DERBY, nor do I understand its contant obsession on this site. I hope it sells out at the Festival, as I hope every show does. Whether it's good or not, I don't see it as any more a threat to any other show in NYMF than its creative team provides.

I began my afternoon by finishing HOW TO STEAL A MILLION. I had no idea that George C. Scott had been cast in the Eli Walach role until Wyler fired him for being late to the set.

Next, I watched the Audrey Hepburn Biography episode which is one of the bonus features on the disc. Her grace, beauty, and loving nature made me weep as those who loved her described her last years.

Next, I finished the rest of the bonus features on THE MILKY WAY disc. All of these people can proclaim it a great film, but it's not going to convince me. Perhaps if I had been familiar with all the alusions to various religious factions and heresies that are addressed during the movie, it might have been more hilarious or more pointed. Instead, it seemed like the same few jokes repeated over and over about the absurdity of faith for some and the absolute need for it for others.

I end the afternoon, I wanted another mystery since I had so enjoyed the Sherlock Holmes movies I rewatched this week. So I put in AND THEN THERE WERE NONE, always a favorite. I've gotten through the first three murders, so there are seven left.
This is a film that needs a thorough restoration.

Have you ever gone to see a play or a musical (no movies allowed) where you absolutely hated every minute of it; even though everyone around you seemed to think it was a masterpiece?
I don't know if this counts, but. . .
I've seen countless productions of Martin Sherman's BENT, which I think is a fine, fine play, from the original Broadway cast to professional and non-professional production, but there is one professional production which stands out in my mind as one of the worst theater experiences I've ever encountered.
The "calling card," so to speak, on this particular production was the casting of one of Pittsburgh's finest actors in the leading role of Max. Well, he is indeed a fine actor, BUT, at the time, he was at least thirty-five years too OLD FOR THE PART! So I considered that strike one.
Strike two would be that the remainder of the cast was age-appropriate - which made Max look like a dirty old man, a pederast and God knows what else! God knows, his Rudy was a young actor barely out of his teens, and looking every bit his age. While his uncle (who provides the letters of transit) could easily have been Max's YOUNGER brother.
Strike three was the set for the concentration camp. The production was in three-quarters and the frigging fence was put up in FRONT of all the seating, so that instead of making the audience become a part of Max and Horst's travails, they were forced to be outsiders, distancing them from the emotional core of the play.
The too, too old actor garnered great reviews - mostly praising him for taking on such a daring role, and the audience I was with seemed (until Act Two) to think they were seeing great theater. . .but great theater it was not! IMHO.
I later worked with the young actor who portrayed Max' tragic one-night stand, who also was very unhappy with the production

Keith's mother is in the hospital with a cracked vertebrae. The emergency room doctor is spending more time trying to figure out why she has had vertigo most of her life. She declined an MRI. She is having an ultrasound this morning. We talked to her just before the test & she sounded much, much better than she did last night & in less pain.

Someone told this story at the party I was at last night and everyone howled so uproriously that my friend and I came into the room to see what was going on. I couldn't believe no one had ever heard this (apart from the friend I had been talking to) since everyone seems to be so tuned in to pop culture. Then I started wondering if it was because I am so much older that everyone else there.
Years ago my DH worked on a film that had this as part of the plot line. Even back then I couldn't beleive that HE hadn't heard this story.
So, anyone who hasn't heard it, now you know how to be the life of the party!

Like DR ELMORE, I really enjoy this series. I haven't yet seen series 3 yet, but am looking forward to it. ELMORE is right: some of us love it, some don't. There are many theatre "in" jokes, and, in my view, this series is much more likely to be enjoyed by those with a theatrical background. But I will also say that it took me several episodes to warm up to it. It's a very different sort of show and there's one aspect of it that you must buy into or the show just won't work for you. Once I warmed up to it I found it very funny. When you watch it, keep an open mind, and let it take you where it will.

I did manage to pull about twenty CDs off the shelf that I know I would never, ever listen to again. I know I could also pull about 200 soundtracks I know I'd never listen to again, but there's the rare factor and the fact that sometimes those things are impossible to replace.

Zach gave us kind of a scare. He had been happily running on the beach for hours at a time all week, and then mid-day Friday he started acting sluggish, to the point Friday night where he almost couldn't move at all. It was very upsetting. We rushed home Saturday and got him to our vet.
$400.00 later, they had ruled out a bone break or arthritic joints, but he did test positive for Lyme. He's on an antibiotic treatment for that, as well as anti-inflammatories, and he seems slowly to be returning to normal. But it was scary!

I will not rant about it because there are people on this very board who mightily enjoyed it. I was not one of them.
Regarding Slings and Arrows, I, too, loved the entire series. I know that there are differing opinions but it brought back great memories of my time in the "biz" and there are some very sharp and accurate portrayals of various types in a regional theatre.

Last week's rain caused some minor flooding in some of the Broadway theatre - the Schoenfeld included. And since the whole pit room is basically lined in black duvateen... And since it got wet... And then got musty and moldy... Well... There will be a new pit come Tuesday afternoon.

DR JoseSPiano, glad to hear that you didn't have a long-term Lyme problem. I've heard some horror stories.
If Zach continues to progress at the current rate, he should be back to normal within a couple of days. And I don't know about the long-term, but that's a very good question for me to ask the vet.

Thank you Jose & Cilla. I spoke to her again & the specialists said not to be concerned about the cracked vertebrae, it isn’t what is causing the back pain. She has been rescheduled for the ultra-sound tomorrow morning.

Actually, I'm playing auditions tomorrow (and Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday) starting at 10:00am, so I'm staying close to home tonight.

While hiking this morning Sherlock ran straight through my ankle & down I wait. It took awhile before I could walk on it, but then it seemed to be only slightly twisted. After walking around town I’m a bit concerned it is sprained. This is the same ankle that has suffered a severe sprain in the past & a hair line fracture. I’m currently wearing the special boot I wore after the fracture.

Have you ever gone to see a play or a musical (no movies allowed) where you absolutely hated every minute of it; even though everyone around you seemed to think it was a masterpiece?
Yes! About 3 years ago I went to a production of PIRATES OF PENZANCE at the community theater here in Salem. With the constant mugging and attempts at scene stealing from the extras or smaller roles to the "updating" including making one of the characters gay...really, really, really gay....well, the whole thing made me want to twist my head off of my body just to end the pain.
However, those who went with me to see it enjoyed the show. I on the other hand still have nightmares.

I began my evening of viewing by finishing AND THEN THERE WERE NONE. One of my bitterest losses was not getting Dr. Armstrong or Mr. Blore in the last local production of TEN LITTLE INDIANS. I should have been happy seeing as the production was very poor, but it stil shocked me when I didn't get cast. The audition turnout was so small.

Next I watched HOT FUZZ. Yep, I loved it, laughed a lot, and, even if it was a bit too long for my taste, was consistently funny throughout.
The last 30-40 minutes of shootout had my surround sound system doing cartwheels around my den. What an active soundfield!
I loved the two snarky detectives with mustaches.

I left the DVD in the player so that tomorrow I can watch the outtakes and some other special features.
If my Charlie Chan box comes tomorrow (it shipped Thursday), I'll watch a CHAN movie tomorrow afternoon/evening. If not, I'll find one of the dozens of other unopened DVDs here to keep me busy.

Please don't get me wrong DR TCB, it was just that they made this character so over the top (in that way the high school jocks would do when they mimic what they think a gay person is like) he wasn't funny in the slightest and it did not fit with the show and it was two hours of torture. It was overkill. And that was just one of many reasons it was a horrible, horrible play....that and the constant mugging of the lesser roles are what stood out for me.

There was a musical starring two actors with six names between them that contained just about everything I hate: comedy songs that aren't funny, catchy pop music "grooves" that mask the shoddy quality of the craftsmanship, no dialogue, a plot that made no sense, and, the worst sin of all self pity. I cannot bear self pity on stage. Makes me want to yell "boo f---ing hoo" in a derisive tone. The girl's first number was unadulterated self-pity and there was ample self-pity in her next few songs. Due to the odd and incomprehensible "concept" of the plot, you ended up hating him even more than you hated her, which is some neat trick.
The set consisted of a twenty-foot tall granite wheel decorated with little doll chairs. There was also an ever-obtrusive turntable in the stage. Every song went on forever. Only one duet. The score contained an Irish jig and a reggae, although nobody seemed to be Irish or Caribbean. There was a latin number about being Jewish - perhaps a too-subtle hint the character was sephardic? Not sure why we needed to know that. One had a couple of jokes in its first half, and none in its second. If I ever write songs this bad, the Dear Readers are instructed to please shoot me.

Finished watching motion pictures for the evening. Am now listening to very strange music by a film composer named Bob Cobert (a very nice man), a collection of big-band tracks from the 50s and disco tracks from the 70s - most outre, hence I'm enjoying it very much.
