Trains:
my first long distance (as in over night) train jounrey was from Melbourne to Sydney and then on further to my Woy Woy (a Spike Milligan reference).
It would have been about 1951. Our States at that time had different railway gauges and the border meant a change of train. It was quite exciting to have a sleeping compartment on the train. The train ride onwards north of Sydney was quite wonderful - it was the first time I have travelled through tunnels! There are no railway unnels in my home state.
Since then I have travelled around much of Europe by train, have crossed this continent and also crossed Canada from Toronto to Vancouver.
I like train travel.

My first (and only major) journey by ship was from Melbourne to London via the Panama Canal back in 1973. (Not sailing ship in 1873!). It was an interesting experience but as I am not a particularly social person, I spend much time reading. My best memories are of the ports of call rather than the journey itself.

My first aeroplane was in about 1970 - to Tasmania.
My first major journey by air was returning from London in 1973.
I do not like plane journeys at all. The 24+ hour flights I have taken from Melbourne to New York and from Melbourne to London have never been pleasant experiences for me. I do prefer to fly with Qantas Airlines. I would rather not fly British Airways and my experience with internal USA flights, did not give me much confidence!
I do not enjoy watching movies on planes (and now will not do it). I try and lose myself in not too demanding reading. Best journey was when I was able to enjoy the "Tales Of the City" books.

Good morning! Boy did I have a rude awakening. I have been thinking for over a week that I have a bat in the house. Boo has been literally climbing the windows and was doing that before I went to sleep last night. Well, we had a bat...I say "had" because by the time I woke up, grabbed the butterfly net and ran to the hallway where I heard the cats and the screeching of the bat...the cats had attacked the bat and it was laying on the floor close to death. That's the good news...the bad news is there was bat blood on the floor, on the walls, on the cupboard door and even on the ceiling!!!
Needless to say I'm up and not going back to sleep. I have cleaned up the mess, put the dead bat in a plastic bag, sealed it and put it in the garage.
The cats weren't happy that I took their prey, but I did praise them and give them treats. Today I will call the guy who guaranteed me that I wouldn't have any bats getting into the house. Hopefully he can seal things up again.

When I expressed concern about a bat biting the cats last year, he was one of the people who assured me that cats can really do a number on bats. Guess he was right.
BTW, the butterfly net would have worked great if the cats hadn't gotten the bat. I used it to get rid of the bat, so I had to wash it out too. I will keep it handy in the bedroom just in case

I think I'm finally calming down. I let out a scream, but only one before grabbing the net and saying out loud "I KNEW it" While I don't promote killing bats, I have to admit I'm glad to know the cats can do it and will do it. I think Boo was the prime mover in the hunt. I didn't see any blood on either cat. I am hoping they weren't bitten. I don't think so. They did just have their rabies shot, so if they were bitten they should be ok,.

TOD - I grew up near a lake so I don't remember my first boat ride. I'm sure I was very little.
I think my first plane ride was when I was in 8th grade and my dad and I flew from Sioux Falls, SD to LAX on Western Airlines where we went to Disneyland and then rented a car and drove to Palm Springs where we stayed with my grandparents for a week or so and then drove them in their car back to their home in Iowa.
I do remember going up in a small plane with my dad when he was looking at something for work. (he's a lawyer too) I don't think it was before the trip to LA.

Train trip - I've never been on an overnight passenger train. I don't remember my first train trip...perhaps when I was in high school and road the subway.

Travel by plane in 1960 when I was nine for a one day trip to NYC to see Lucy in WILDCAT....which I have written about here before.
I did wear a suit and tie....and think most of the men on board did so, as did my uncle who took me. The stewardesses had on gloves when we got on board. It seems to me that it was a prop plane. Of course I had seen JULIE and just knew that those stewardesses could have brought the plane in had something happened to the pilots.

First overseas flight was in 1989 when I went to Ireland.....to take our production of MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM to the Dundalk Play Festival.

I am not a member of that church - but several times I have heard its tenets discussed by those around me.
I am still NOT convinced that it is the DUTY of community theatre to provide a musical specifically FOR the high school crowd every summer....taking a slot away from ADULTS....when students have at least ONE opportunity (and sometimes two) during the school year to participate in the ritual...a luxury we don't necessarily have.
But my argument falls on bat....or rather....deaf ears....same thing.

Ugh! CILLALIZ! Another bat! Poor you. I had a bat in the house once and it really was frightening. They're such strange creatures and can, of course, do you harm. I'm glad the cats took care of it. I also don't like to kill or harm creatures unnecessarily, but once thery're in the house it can be quite difficult to remove them otherwise.

My very first plane trip was when I was about 3 and I remember next to nothing. The next time I flew was when I was 18. I was flying from LA to Munich. The plane had stopped in Montreal to refuel. As we were about to head over the Atlantic one of the engines caught on fire. All worked out, but it was quite an experience for a novice traveller like me.
Like DR TOMOVOZ, I don't really care to fly, but I love trains. Can't recall my first train trip.

As for the Topic of the Day...
Plane Travel - The first one I remember was the family trip to the Philippines when I was six. I think we flew from DC to LAX to Hawaii (where I distinctly remember not wanting to get off the plane, so I pretended to be asleep in my seat ???) then onto Manila.
Once in the Philippines, we took one or two flights to other parts of the Islands. And on one of those flights, I got airsick. And I believe that same flight had to return back to the airport due to some sort of mechanical deal - of course, I thought they were turning back because I had used one of those little bags in the seat pocket. But the next attempt, I did not get sick, and we made it to the other island.
But what I remember most about that trip were the crowds(!) of people waiting for us at the airports. It seemed at the time that the whole town had come out to greet us - and thinking back, that probably could have happened when we were in Tagig. All these strangers reaching for me and my family. Sort of like a receiving line, but not really.
And there are still parts of that trip that I remember that my parents don't.

Had a longer night's sleep last night than I've had in the last month, so I was grateful for that. The morning temps weren't too bad either, so it's starting out as a good day. Hope it continues.

Well, I called the exterminator. The guy who does the bat proofing is off on Guard duty, but should be back on Friday - apparently he's in one of the few Iowa units that isnt' in Iraq - they said they will honor their guarantee and come back out an patch for nothing. He asked if I could wait until Monday. Sure...I'm going to be gone from Thursday to Sunday.
I will have to warn my cat sitter and tell her to please clean up the blood if the cats get it. Yuck.

I've talked about my first long train trip - to NYC in 1958.
My first trip on a airplane was flying out to California during December of 1961. We had to take a prop plane to Atlanta, and then caught the Delta flight to Dallas, changed planes, and then flew into San Francisco from there. Spent several days there and then took the train to LA. Spent three days in Disneyland, and then the rest of the trip in LA. When we flew back, it was a nonstop to Charlotte from LA. Much better than all that changing going out.

I did record CALIFORNICATION off Showtime last night, so I'll watch to see what DR td was so excited about. Should be kind of fun. And I need to find a replay of last night's SAVING GRACE so I can see how it ended.

I went to the Edwards breakfast. I forgot how small he is in person, and Elizabeth is even smaller. She looked pretty good though, her hair is pretty thin but otherwise she looked pretty good. She was sitting in a rocking chair. Total photo op. I took a couple and can post them later. The Edwards kids were next door playing on a trampoline. They got so loud at one point, John asked Elizabeth to please quiet them down. The whole crowd started laughing.
I had a nice chat with a reporter from the New York Times. I kept thinking, "I know she won't quote me, she hasn't asked my name" Well, duh, it was right there on my name tag. I still don't know if she will quote me, but we had a very nice discussion. And I got my photo of John Edwards and I autographed to me.
I liked him a lot better this time. Much more than when he was promoting John Kerry. Sheesh! This is a tough decision this year

First train ride was the Amtrak from D.C.'s Union Station to NYC's Penn Station when I was in high school. It was our high school theatre trip. We saw Brighton Beach Memoirs, Biloxi Blues, and The Tap Dance Kid. And we stayed at the Edison Hotel. :)

My "bat" experiences were all in Vicenza, Italy, where they swarmed only a couple of feet above your head during the early evenings.
I visited houses where folks kept (screenless) windows open and the bats would fly in and swoop around in the room. Thank goodness for those high ceilings. These folks assured me that the bats were a blessing since they eat flies and mosquitoes, etc.
Uh-huh.
A bat got into my apartment in Vicenza one night. I nearly freaked out. Seriously. FREAKED.
I don't like spiders or snakes, either.

First plane ride was from Medford to Portland when I was in 7th grade. I entered my 8mm movie THE DAY OF THE DINOSAURS in a young people'sfilm festival in Portland and was invited up to see the screening of the winners...of which mine was one. I flew by myself and my brother Jeff met me in Portland.
My first boat ride was when I was a tiny child. My parents had a boat and we took it to the lake quite often.
My first train ride was only a few years ago. I took my grandneice Taylor to the zoo and instead of driving we took the train from Sherwood and were dropped off practically in front of the zoo's gates. It was fun.

Well folks, I guess I'd better get my stuff together and head off to see DR Jose. I'm going in for the EVITA call - just for something to do (the rehearsal schedule itself would conflict with the Brain - and I know where my priorities lie); but the CD is making files, so that never hurts!

Okay why is that so funny?
One thing i didn't get is that I didn't think that the people who went knew that danny and lacey were safe.
I mean the first few days it was very hard to get spoilers (i just really wanted to know that danny was safe). At first people said it was danny and lauren who went. Then finally it seemed like pasha and lauren (i think it was clear she would go).
I am happy with the choices. I am curious though who will win. I would think that lacey would have a good shot. My guess would be her or danny.
My choices would be:

2.sabra
3.neil
4.lacey
Although i do think lacey is a good dancer. I've just never liked her personality. I loved her cousin heidi (she was my favorite dancer last year). and i also really liked her brother benji.

TOD - I remember neither my first train nor my first plane ride, but have heard my mother talk about both so much it seems I do.
Train: When they received word that my father was being transferred from Portland, Oregon (where I was born), to Detroit, my mother wanted a farewell visit to the San Francisco Bay Area (where they'd lived before I was born). She and I took the train from Portland to SF and back - a trip I'd like to repeat now that I'm old enough to remember it (before I get too old to remember anything!)
The first train trip I remember was when my Camp Fire Girls group went from Plymouth, Michigan, to the state capitol in Lansing. We visited then-governor G. Mennen "Soapy" Williams in his office and shook hands with him.
Plane: General Motors (who transferred my dad) flew our family to Detroit, which, according to my mother, was the trip from h***.
The first plane trips I remember were on private planes. One of my dad's co-workers took us for a ride over Mt. Desert Island, Maine, where our family was on a camping vacation when I was 12. When I was in high school and we visited my aunt and uncle in Owensboro, Kentucky, he took us flying over the area where my dad grew up.
The first commercial flight I remember was when my mother and I flew to NYC for my first visit there, 40 years ago. At age 16, I had my first cup of coffee courtesy of American Airlines. Been hooked on coffee and NYC ever since!

First Plane Ride: Columbia SC to Orlando FL in June 1970, going from Fort Jackson SC (military indoctrination center) to Recruit Training Command Orlando (Navy boot camp).
First Train Ride: Naples, Italy to Vicenza, Italy with changeovers in Rome and Bologna -- March 1973 (going from Navy Support Activity, Naples, my host command, to Vicenza, Italy, my designated duty station (Southern European Broadcasting, the Armed Forces Radio Network HQS in Italy).
First Ship Ride: Corinth, Greece to Rimini, Italy in August 1975, leaving Greece where I had been assigned in Athens to return to Italy where I would be assigned to Naples for a tour of duty. The ship was an auto carrier. I drove into a hold and parked. The trip took a day and a half (two overnights). Interesting.

First train ride: We moved from Ohio to New Orleans on the train when my father began his career with the public health service.
Shortly after we arrived, we all came down with the flu and my GaGa took the train down from Oiho to take care of us all.
First plane ride: After New Oreleans, we moved to Seattle. It was too far to drive home to Ohio for Christmas, so my mother and brother and I flew to Ohio.
One the plane was Jim Whittaker, the first American to climb Mt. Everest. He autographed the book I'd brought along, something I'm sure I had to get rid of on one of our many moves.
First boat ride: The ferry from Seattle to Vancouver Island. Butchart Gardens and the smell of tulips---I'll never forget that!

Talk about a white-knuckle ride! I asked the flight attendant about it later and she said that it was always this way in summer, something to do with the winds. I'll take a large plane any day!

My first PROP plane flight: Hmmm....I'm not sure about the dates. It was sometime in 1976, IIRC. I was in "Come Blow Your Horn" at Caserma Ederle (in Vicenza, Italy). The director was station manager of the radio station to which I was assigned. The commander of the Southern European Task Force (SETAF) (Army command in charge of Army and Air Force facilities in Italy, Greece and Turkey) asked my boss if he could arrange to "tour" the military sites of SETAF with the play. We had a two-week tour. All the military got special leave (i.e. it didn't cost us any personal leave time) and TDY (temporary duty allowance). The SETAF commander sent us out in two PROP planes with pilots/co-pilots. We were a merry band of travelers. I was afforded an opportunity to sit in co-pilot's seat and take the controls as we neared Mt. Olympus. It was quite a THRILL.
My first Helicopter Ride: During the same trip, we went to one remote site in Turkey in helicopters.

What was the first time you were on a plane:
1958 - Flew from Baltimore to Boston on a turbo-prop (Went to BC to represent Annapolis in a Forensics competition - won a trophy for my pairing of The Hollowmen with an excerpt from The Secret Sharer).
Train - circa 1954 - Philadelphia to Boston (My Boy Scout leader took me for the weekend - and the answer to the question is YES!)
Boat - well, I guess the paddle boats on Saylor's Lake in the Poconos don't count, so the next boat trip was in 1956 when I crewed on a Navy Ship from Philadelphia to Provincetown Mass (YES, again).
Boat wise I've been to Canada, Greenland, Cuba, Denmark, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Malta, Crete, Greece, Turkey, Japan, Viet Nam (actually a helo trip from ship to share), Hong Kong, Philippines, Hawaii, Panama, Jamaica, Columbia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Bermuda, and lots of Caribbean spots.
Air travel adds England, Holland, Austria, Switzerland and East Germany to the list.

When I was working for Howard and the Navy was picking up the bills, I used to regularly use an 8 seat commuter prop to go from Ontario Airport to LA, then Jet to Providence RI, then a four-seater prop from there to Newport - it was really fun!

Good morning! Boy did I have a rude awakening. I have been thinking for over a week that I have a bat in the house. Boo has been literally climbing the windows and was doing that before I went to sleep last night. Well, we had a bat...I say "had" because by the time I woke up, grabbed the butterfly net and ran to the hallway where I heard the cats and the screeching of the bat...the cats had attacked the bat and it was laying on the floor close to death. That's the good news...the bad news is there was bat blood on the floor, on the walls, on the cupboard door and even on the ceiling!!!
Needless to say I'm up and not going back to sleep. I have cleaned up the mess, put the dead bat in a plastic bag, sealed it and put it in the garage.
The cats weren't happy that I took their prey, but I did praise them and give them treats. Today I will call the guy who guaranteed me that I wouldn't have any bats getting into the house. Hopefully he can seal things up again.
That's so weird! My friend Kim (we were in Cannibal! The Musical together) e-mailed me last night that SHE had a bat in her house last night, too! Fortunately, she and her husband were able to get the bat outside without any injuries to her, her husband, their kid or the bat. :-\

I love flying as long as there are no scheduled aircraft carrier landings (my first crash, or I am not expected to pilot the plane (my second misadventure).

We slept on the boat in marinas to save money. We didn't travel very fast, but we sure saw the country from a different perspective!

Please extend my congratulations to the TNT team responsible for The Company - my favorite mini-series in years.
The plot lines hit close to home. It was the Hungarian revolution that triggered the cancellation of my active duty deferent and sent me on active duty. The visuals (exteriors, cars, costumes) for 1956 are really well done.
I was in Santiago, Cuba weeks before Castro took over (there were sand-bagged sentry posts on the street corners). The failure of the US to come to the invaders' support was the subject of much discussion at the Academy - indeed the topic was closely tied to our craven desertion of Hungary in 1956
I wonder if the conclusion will carry through the theme of "Don't Trust the USA" with our desertion of the Shiites after the first Iraq invasion?

Does anyone even use sides anymore? I mean, I know if you rent a show from Tams - Witmark, they send them...
But I've always found it easier to xerox the entire script and work from that.
The only time that I've actually gotten sides was in my very first theatrical experience in college. We did Brigadoon and were given the sides. NOBODY liked them and everyone complained, so they caved in and copied the scripts. For some reason, the director and staff either didn't want us to have the full scripts or they just didn't want to go through the hassle of copying all of them. Either way, the sides were stupid...especially for a musical! :P

I've never been on a prop plane.
As for first plane, I was about four years old and we moved to Germany (my dad was in the army). I don't remember it. We flew back to the States when I was seven. I barely remember that. The next flight I took wasn't until 1990 when my sister, niece and I flew to California to visit our aunt (the nun) who just visited us last month. The two other long-distance flights that I took were both non-stop from Seattle...one to New York and one to London. On the trip to NYC from Seattle, I had a window seat and as we flew above the clouds, there was a rainbow that was a complete circle!! AND I DIDN'T HAVE MY CAMERA! It was packed in my luggage. >:( Talk about a missed opportunity. It would've been a GREAT picture.

I disagree. I think danny is the best dancer on the show.
I think the reason he was in the B3 was because 1) his partners 2)people did not realize how good he was.
I think he has gotten better each week. Plus i think that when the judges and expert choreographers say he is the best dancer they have ever seen ... well i think people start to think that kicking out someone so acclaimed makes them look dumb.
The thing is it is ONLY america voting right now (no judges). It's been like this for weeks. So if the people really wanted danny out he would be out.

It's not unusual at all. August is the time that the baby bats start leaving and flying around. From what I've read they are usually the ones that end up getting into the living space of a house, not on purpose, but by accident. Today I heard of four other people in town who have had bats recently.
BTW, I called the vet and they didn't think I needed to give the cats a booster for rabies. Apparently most of the small brown bats around here are negative so if pets have had their rabies shots, they don't worry too much about it

I began my afternoon of viewing watching the Season 2 featurette on THE CLOSER DVD. When I started watching it the first time I watched the set, I realized that a lot of the murderers were going to be featured in the clips, and since I had forgotten how several of the shows ended, I never watched the entire thing until this afternoon. So funny hearing Kyra's normal speaking voice after hearing her speech "Brenda Leigh" for years and years.

Then, I put in CHARLIE CHAN ON BROADWAY. Good mystery, and I guessed the murderer's identity though I know I had seen the movie decades ago, so I guess that gave me an unfair advantage even if I didn't remember it at all.

There is a special feature or two on the DVD. One was called "The World of Charlie Chan" in which they elaborate on all the various places Chan went when Warner Oland was playing him. (He went to many fascinating places as Sidney Toler, too but those aren't mentioned.)

There is also a quick five or so minute featurette on Chanograms - the little "fortune cookie" syaings he's so famous for. Again, only the Oland films are excerpted.

I put THE CLOSER, Season 2, disc 2 back in and began watching "To Protect and Serve," which is another of my favorite episodes from the season. I only got about halfway through, so I'll finish it when I go back down.

I just read in VARIETY that Anjelica Huston has been signed for a six-episode arc on MEDIUM this year. She represents a company who hires Allison for some consulting work. The storyline is to continue to keep the series from lapsing into a predictable forumula.
Formula didn't bother me at all because the writing has been so excellent to usually keep the viewer off balance and not quite sure how the visions and dreams tie in together with what's actually happening. Also, now that Allison's secret is out, wouldn't that shake up the show, too?

I just read in VARIETY that Anjelica Huston has been signed for a six-episode arc on MEDIUM this year. She represents a company who hires Allison for some consulting work. The storyline is to continue to keep the series from lapsing into a predictable forumula.
Formula didn't bother me at all because the writing has been so excellent to usually keep the viewer off balance and not quite sure how the visions and dreams tie in together with what's actually happening. Also, now that Allison's secret is out, wouldn't that shake up the show, too?
Anyway, should be interesting episodes with these two actresses playing off one another.
I always wonder how closely they follow the real Allison's real life.

Well, after practically seven hours straight through without a real break - lunch or otherwise - we are DONE! -Well, I am done. If I never have to play that "Buenos Aires" dance break again, it will not be too soon. -Or something like that. -I think I played it 82 times today. And probably about 600 times over the past four and half months that this casting process has been going on. So..

Yes dustin was the replacement nominee when Evil took off Daniele.
I haven't read what has happened this afternoon. But before that things were getting interesting. I truly am not sure if dustin will go (or dick).
Dick has daniele's vote to stay. And dustin has amber and jameka's vote to stay.
Eric has no choice and will most likely have to evict dustin. Dick is the most popular houseguest. So i'm pretty sure eric will have to keep him.
Dick wants eric and jessica to vote with him and daniele.
Jen has said she would vote out dick.
Zach told jessica he would vote however she told him.
Now Evil and Daniele want zach to vote with them. But he does not want to betray jessica. He said that jessica would have to say it was okay.
The real thing is that zach and jen don't realize that the vote could be turned. They think dustin is safe (eric, jameka, amber and jessica). If they knew the truth (that eric would have to flip) then dick might be able to convince them to vote with him.
I'll be very curious to see what CBS shows tonight. Apparently dick was very sweet at the POV meeting. But he was extremely awful on saturday i think. He was banging pots and pans and spewing hatred. He was really awful. He threatened rape on dustin.
I"m sure CBS will edit it to make him just seem like a loving father trying to help his daughter. Very awful.

The ankle & mother-in-law vibes are working Jose, TCB, JRand, Singdaw & Ginny, thank you. My mother-in-law returned home yesterday. I could do a long rant on why they needlessly, or to run up her bill, kept her an extra day or two. They shouldn’t even charge her for the second day since it was due to their error feeding her before the ultra-sound which required the test to wait a day. At least she is feeling better & the cracked vertebrae is very slight & nothing to worry about.
My ankle is much better so I might even go hiking tomorrow. I know I shouldn’t but I miss my hiking friends & I want some exercise.
And the results are back from my biopsy, all is ok except the the polyp is the kind that could have turned into cancer. Darn, now I have to repeat the test in 5 years instead of 10. :P

Thanks to Miss Patti, I may finally have this wretched sublet thing worked out. The only downside to it is that it requires a move on September 5th. One place from August 22 to Sept 4th, and then another from the 5th to October 1st. The good news is they are both nice studios with A/C and either wireless or highspeed, and they're within two blocks of each other and very close to our theater. Still pricey, but better than anything else we've found.

Craig & Ioana left yesterday & was very excited to begin their road trip across the county & simply to be driving after not having a license for two years. Not that he needed a license in Romania, driving there once was more than enough, way too frightening.
Bryan & his sugar gliders are on the road back to Portland. I wish he could have stayed an extra day but the gliders were very unhappy in the small traveling cage. Normally he brings their large one, next time when he doesn’t have passengers with luggage.
Before leaving our GI doctor invited him, with the patient’s permission, to observe four colonoscopies this morning. He found it very interesting. It will also help, if he receives any, to mention it on his secondary applications for medical school.
I’m missing my boys right now.

I went to the Edwards breakfast. I forgot how small he is in person, and Elizabeth is even smaller. She looked pretty good though, her hair is pretty thin but otherwise she looked pretty good. She was sitting in a rocking chair. Total photo op. I took a couple and can post them later. The Edwards kids were next door playing on a trampoline. They got so loud at one point, John asked Elizabeth to please quiet them down. The whole crowd started laughing.
I had a nice chat with a reporter from the New York Times. I kept thinking, "I know she won't quote me, she hasn't asked my name" Well, duh, it was right there on my name tag. I still don't know if she will quote me, but we had a very nice discussion. And I got my photo of John Edwards and I autographed to me.
I liked him a lot better this time. Much more than when he was promoting John Kerry. Sheesh! This is a tough decision this year

The only time that I've actually gotten sides was in my very first theatrical experience in college. We did Brigadoon and were given the sides. NOBODY liked them and everyone complained, so they caved in and copied the scripts. For some reason, the director and staff either didn't want us to have the full scripts or they just didn't want to go through the hassle of copying all of them. Either way, the sides were stupid...especially for a musical! :P

On my walk up to Columbus Circle, I decided to stop into Empanada Mama for dinner. After a strangely long-ish wait for my food, I thoroughly enjoyed my arepa Cubano, and an order or tostones. Consequently, I have a sense that I shall be exuding garlic for the next 24-36 hours. ;)

The Acela ride to DC this morning took 2 hrs and 45 minutes, and it was quite pleasant. I arrived at Union Station around 8:50 and took the Metro to the Library of Congress. I had a good but more could have been accomplished if our computers at the office hadn't been stolen in July. I could have called the office and ascertained which original orchestra parts from THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER were missing pages and recopied them today. Still, I obtained more copyright info, photocopied some manuscripts and had a lovely lunceon of Mexican food and margaritas with two of my favorite librarians and Miles Kreuger's assistant Eric, who was researching Reginald de Koven.
I think I may be going back next week for two days: the 1902 WIZARD OF OZ materials are missing and most likely misplaced in the Tams-Witmark Collection. I volunteered to help locate them because I need to look at the show for whatever I can glean about BABES IN TOYLAND from it and to obtain copies of the numbers that Montgomery & Stone performed. So, I'll go out to their storage area with them and search the archives. It's definitely cheaper than a flight and accommodation at the University of Wisconsin, which seems to be the only other source for the score.
I finished up at 2:45 and decided to try an earlier train back than the one at 5:00. I ended up on the 4:05 train which hits every stop and landed in Manhattan around 7:25.

It's not unusual at all. August is the time that the baby bats start leaving and flying around. From what I've read they are usually the ones that end up getting into the living space of a house, not on purpose, but by accident. Today I heard of four other people in town who have had bats recently.
BTW, I called the vet and they didn't think I needed to give the cats a booster for rabies. Apparently most of the small brown bats around here are negative so if pets have had their rabies shots, they don't worry too much about it
Years ago, when I moved into my little house out in the country, the mailboxes for the whole development were about two blocks from my house. In the summer, I would walk down in the evening (after everything had cooled off). All the way down to the mailboxes and back to the house I could hear the bats flying right over my head. It was kind of a cool sensation listening to them, they sounded like Keifer Sutherland and company in LOST BOYS.
Of course, one day my neighbor informed me that they were fruit bats; so then I was afraid to leave the house.

I found the information on that song that that one young woman brought in to the Brain auditions last week. The "swing" number - which happens to be from a show called Swing which had a book by Alfred Uhry and music by Robert Waldman. And, lo and behold, I finally found out why it was sort of familiar to me: the show never made it into NYC, it closed in DC. And I think I actually saw it too!

Noel - I am so excited that you have Brad Oscar in your show. My best friends, Sharry and Micheal are friends of Brad. In fact they just flew down to Vegas in June to see Brad do the lead in THE PRODUCERS again. They weren't as crazy about the edited down PRODUCERS, as I was of PHANTOM.

And part of it is just the nature of NYMF too since each of the show's six performances are spread out over two or so weeks, and at different times. Depending on people's "day jobs", it may not be that easy for them adjust their schedule.
Conversely, the early fall season is an ideal time for The Fringe and NYMF since there are usually a bunch of actors who have just gotten back from summer-stock gigs. And since they were working out-of-town, they weren't able to audition for some of the other productions going up this fall. And in regards to Broadway shows, unless it's trying out out-of-town, most shows wait until the Spring to open. So, some of those "Broadway Babies" may be available also.
And judging from some of the work I have lined up for September and October, this fall in New York City is surprisingly busy in regards to "big" auditions. (And it was already an unseasonably busy summer this year for most casting agencies.) There are lots of possibly-buzz-worthy productions - both here in NYC and elsewhere - that will be auditioning actors over the next couple of weeks. Additionally, a couple of currently running shows have their regular "6-month calls" coming up too - and there are some known openings available for various projects. I have a few friends who are keeping themselves "open" in order to be available for auditions. Yes, that can be risky - to work, or not to work - but that's the Actor's Life.

If you want to be truly "humbled", you should go into a casting agent's office, and ask to look at one of the "files" for a particular show - or, even better yet, a currently, long-running show. The number of headshots and resumes and casting session lists and notes is staggering. And what's truly humbling, is that the casting agent can most likely recall when and where they heard a particular actor... where in the file the headshot is located... and what they sang that day too!

DR Jane, that is interesting...they found polyps in me - a bit unusual for someone in their early 40's, and I have to repeat the test every 3 years. Perhaps that's because of family history.

Keith has to repeat the test every 4 years, no family history only polyps. My father had colon cancer & I am more susceptible because of my genetic risk for ovarian cancer. Maybe I heard 5 years and she said 4, maybe it's because of my age. Most likely it is because the polyp was so very small. I will double check when Keith returns for his.

I began my evening of viewing finishing THE CLOSER episode from Season 2 that I was rewatching. I felt really bad for that father who had to keep that psycho surrogate mother from trying to take away the daughter he and his wife had raised from birth. I hope the jury was lenient with him.

Next, I watched LUST IN THE DUST. I saw this in the theater decades ago when it was released, and I found it a trifle disappointing. After reading Tab Hunter's autobiography, I decided to find a cheap used copy of the disc to watch it again. It was still disappointing. The cast was fine, but the writing just wasn't up to snuff - lots of great comedy potential undone by lackluster writing.
The disc had great color and sharpness but the grain was heavier than I like to see.

Next, I began PURSUIT TO ALGIERS, another Basil Rathbone/Sherlock Holmes film. Probably the least exciting of the series, and yet I still have a fondness for it. Love the cast, and that was a neat surprise they pull with the prince.
I'll finish it tomorrow. I haven't gotten to hear Nigel Bruce sing "Loch Lomand" yet!

And I ended my evening with another episode of DAMAGES. Once again, a terrific shock near the end of the episode, and then surprise after surprise afterward. I don't see how on earth the writers are going to be able to constantly pull rabbits out of hats for the rest of the remaining episodes of the season, but so far, there hasn't been a mundane episode yet.

Yesterday was June Allyson Day at TCM, and of her movies that they showed during the day, I got the DVR to pick up TWO SISTERS FROM BOSTON which I've only seen once in my life and it was very long ago. Tomorrow, I'll watch that in the afternoon. Think I'll hold off on watching the last two Charlie Chans in the box set. Don't want to have them wear out their welcomes too quickly.

Just back from having had a fabulous time seeing the radiant Heather Spore (to my delight, Heather lists Last Starfighter as the second credit in her bio, right after The Fantasticks) go on as Glinda opposite Julia Murney's fantastic Elphaba, and with Lenny Wolpe delightful - but creepy when necessary - as the Wizard.
There was a little do at the New World Grill after the show, where I got to meet lots of Heather's family and friends. (Skip was performing his show at 59E59 tonight, and therefore couldn't go to see WICKED tonight.) While Heather's gone on as Glinda before, this was the first time she knew well enough in advance to let people who have been anxious to see her as Glinda know about it.

I was going to watch the first disc of Kenneth Branagh's magnificent motion picture of HAMLET, but, the first act is two hours and thirty-seven minutes long! (I shall have to begin this endeavor at 7 or 8 pm some night, definitely NOT at midnight)!

Years ago, when I moved into my little house out in the country, the mailboxes for the whole development were about two blocks from my house. In the summer, I would walk down in the evening (after everything had cooled off). All the way down to the mailboxes and back to the house I could hear the bats flying right over my head. It was kind of a cool sensation listening to them, they sounded like Keifer Sutherland and company in LOST BOYS.
Of course, one day my neighbor informed me that they were fruit bats; so then I was afraid to leave the house.
I remember living on the LA wash and hearing the bats on the summer nights. Very relaxing if you don't picture them flying in your hair.

Alan is a favorite at the Shubert Theatre, where I hear he was fabulous in the Lancelot track. He came in to see the show once while I was working there, and was just as pleasant and unassuming as anyone could be. And his girlfriend was loverly, as well, if anyone is interested.
DR Jose: Can you send me the breakdown for the Genie? I'm curious to know what makes me so "right" for it. In any case, I plan to be there. Won't that be weird, seeing how I assistant directed ALADDIN, JR. for MTI/Disney/Mr. Menken (starring SPRING AWAKENING's Gideon Glick)?? And what should I sing?

I'm very quickly becoming a fan of "The Closer." Kyra Sedgwick is fantastic, as is HAIRSPRAY's Corey Reynolds and the rest of the cast. And the writing is FANTASTIC! How have I missed this show until now??
I'm also having a fun time reading the Tom Ripley books. I just finished "The Talented Mr. Ripley," and have moved to the next in the series, "Ripley Under Ground." I'm averaging about 150 pages a day, which for me is practically speed reading! The book has to go back on the 30th, so I have to keep going... Only 700 pages to go!

I'm all for putting a "statute of limitations" on how long after something is aired before folks no longer need to write that their comments may contain a SPOILER.
On one forum I belong to, people get into snits when someone talks about plot points in "Casablanca."
I say, any movie that's been around 64 years can be discussed in as much detail as one wishes without declaring SPOILER.
OTOH, if a "new" show has recently aired, it's only fair to say SPOILER if plot points/feelings about the story are being discussed at least through the following weekend.
I say this because during the height of sweeps, I may record four or more shows during the week and seldom get to them before the weekend.
Folks here are pretty good about it, actually...so...if some show aired new last night and Elmo the Incorrigible is revealing plot points today without SPOILER warnings, it may be that he needs a dose of castor oil and an early bedtime.

I just completed my first full (1-hour) yoga practice with DYI (Dear Yoga Instructor) Alejandro. I have to say, I am more relaxed now that I think I have been in MONTHS. My shoulders aren't up around my earlobes (for now) and the tension in my back has subsided for a bit. Huzzah!
