Title: A NEW DO
Post by: bk on August 18, 2007, 12:10:48 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes did what they do, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're getting a new do and when the do is done they'll say moo to the do.

Hello, Vixmom!  Sorry I missed you last night.  You asked about NYMF. Yes indeed:  I will attend the closing night of The Brain on 9/30 at 8:00 PM, along with so many other DRs.  I'm also set for Such Good Friends on Sat 10/6 @ 1:00 PM and Starfighter for 10/7 @4:00 PM.  I think those happen to be the last performances of each respective show.  Hope I'll meet you and the Vixter at some point in there!

singdaw - since you weren't around last night and may be skimming last night's post, I'm just repeating my request for a favor assuming you get to Skip's show today.  It's just in the spirit of HHW being a place where it seems we encourage each other and each other's families - and the fact is that while different critics have loved different one-acts in the program Skip's on, it seemed that the same critics tended to dismiss the others - but there is no consitency as to which anyone liked, a likely result of the four pieces being very differnet from each other:

Larry and singdaw - I'm hoping to be at Skip's show tomorrow as well.  Since Skip is actually performing in the show, and I know how strong opinions on here can get (see Bukowsical and PB&J), could I respectfully beg that any negative comments be held until after the show closes on August 28?

Frankly, the reviews of the one-act evening have been quite varied.  Almost every review picked out a favorite among the evening's variety of one-acts (the musical by Eduardo Machado and Skip is the second piece in the second act, and is the last piece of the performance).  And for the most part, when a critic liked one of the pieces above the others, that critic would go on about the piece he or she liked and then just run through the others.  The theaterscene.net critic liked Skip's piece AFTERNOON TEA the most of the four; the Times really liked Leslie Lyle's RAIN, HEAVY AT TIMES the most, as did backstage; nytheatre.com liked Warren Leight's AMICI, ASCOLTAT (sp?) the best, etc  And so it went.

Miss Karen - Interesting that in the original complaint by your now disbarred original attorney, he referred to the defendant (me) several times as Skankem - another of his many spelling errors.  You'd think he'd have a proofreader on staff.

(Never fear, as your attorney of record, I filed an amended complaint to change it to Skookem.  Do you want me to send my bill for amending the complaint to you or should I send it directly to our past-due collection department as usual?  No postal charge for delivery to myself as defendant, since I can just give it to myself.)

Yes, Skookie, give it to yourself -- and pay it yourself. I've decided to go after alimony, too. Cocoa and I are used to living on $10,000 a day -- just so you know the ballpark ...

I did not order anything from this week's list of releases. I loved DEXTER, and while I'd highly recommend anyone watching this very entertaining, offbeat series, I can't say I'd ever want to revisit the first season episodes again. I am looking forward to the second season which starts up soon.

UGLY BETTY is coming, of course, but I didn't ened to order it. Same for HOUSE OF GAMES.

Good morning, all!

From two postings, DR FJL, you certainly seem anxious that either the one-act series or one of the plays, perhaps Skip's show?, could be panned! I think you should relax.

I still have an extra ticket if anyone would like it!

I'm off to the NYPL and then to the one-acts at 2:00; if anyone wants that ticket, call me on my cell phone or show up at the theatre, 59 East 59th.

I went to the bank and the post office and stopped at the Crystal Flash gasoline station where I saw an eight year old girl with long blonde hair wearing a tube top and a mini skirt and flip flops do an interpretative dance (or African fertility dance) in front of the Hostess Twinkie rack.

Her mother was yakking to the cashier about the new $20 Hoosier Lottery Ticket and didn't seem interest at all in her daughter displaying her terpsichorean talents.

Larry - Absolutely, these one-acts have provoked divergent strong reaction, with general critical disagreement as to which work fabulously and which are terrible.  As it happens, Skip's music has come off nicely in the reviews, but I'm worried about any vitriol (hyperbolic or otherwise) directed at ANY of the pieces on the evening on a site that's comprised of friends of ours.  The writers on this evening are generally Skip's collaborators and their close freinds.  Skip has to go there every performance, and perfrom with these people every performance, so  as a favor, please delay any negative comments about the show Skip is performing at every perfromance  until performances are over.

Just thought I'd check in quickly before I head out to get ready for "Bukowsical!"  We have to report to this "meeting place" about an hour and 15 minutes before our show, since we don't have any great length of time at the theatre to get ready for we go on.  The fact is, it's kind of pointless to get there THAT early, as most people circumvent the purpose by getting ready either before we meet or waiting until 5 minutes before curtain to wander around asking where their pants are...

Anyway - hope everyone is well, and I hope to see Jason and Jose later!

Actually, people eat this stuff up.  Today's group was small - only 4 people - but 3 of them were very engaged and articulate.  The 4th was one of the loony ladies who hangs out in the library and she left when it became clear to her that she was not going to be allowed to monopolize the program.

Not really a movie, but the 1990 New York Opera production of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC with Sally Ann Howes.  It was filmed for Great Performances, but I think it is the best production I have ever seen on film (unless someone is hoarding an Original Broadway Cast DVD).

Hell, my power cord died years ago.

At her age, she is allowed to work, as long as there is a parent or guardian present.

I'm not clear whether the lightning damage that DR LAURA spoke of was to the church or her home. If it's to her home, then she and I are having a contest as to whose house takes longer to get repaired and repainted.

I'm wrestling with a plumbing repair that we THOUGHT would be relatively simple. One thing led to another and now we have to involve the City. Ugh! I tell you, it's the little things that get ya!

Oh, DR Jane---I don't edit the show...I edit everything but the show! So I often work from dailies if a show isn't ready, but I do the tv promos, trailers you see in the theatre, sales pieces, music videos, basically all the support stuff.

I wish I was editing the show but not under their schedule! I think their crew does a great job, though, when I look at the dailies. Not that the performances aren't top-notch, but it's all hand-held and the actors forget lines all the time because they have so much to memorize each week and scenes never go from beginning to end without lots of repeated lines, stops and starts and backing up. The editors manage to get all the best stuff and all the wonderful little moments and nuances and exchanged looks.

I wish they would get the Emmy nomination they deserve!

Anthony Warlow fans, here are some new news!

Phantom of the Opera has re-opened in Australia on the 28th of July, having been announced in October, 2006 that Warlow would once again take on the lead role. Alongside Warlow, Australia's Ana Marina and John Bowles were cast as Christine Daae and Raoul, the Vicomte de Chagny. The tour began with immediate success, however Anthony Warlow missed out on over a weeks worth of preformances towards the start of the season, excluding the opening night, having caught influenza along with many other cast and crew members. Warlow’s understudy, Simon Pryce, had taken aboard the heavy role with success until Warlow's return on the 9th of August.

Wedding Scarecrows.

I have never seen such a thing - but I think I like it.  ;D

I've been there! It's in Canada and is one of the strangest things I've ever seen. It's outside Cheticamp on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. I went there with my little French boy over 10 years ago. I drove up to NY, picked him up, and then we went on a whirlwind tour of eastern Canada, from Montreal all the way to the tip of the Gaspé peninsula (a town called "Meat Cove"!)

This is Joe's Drive-In Theatre of Scarecrows. Joe has since passed on but his son still keeps up the place. I would love to go back there one day...the area was so beautiful!

Someone just mentioned "The Opposite Sex." I'm assuming you mean the June Allyson/Ann Miller/Joan Blondell/Dolores Gray "musical" version of "The Women...?" It was on TMC just the other night. I stayed up until 5:00 a.m. just to watch it.

I must say, I have a special little place in my heart for Junie Allyson.

Yep, that's the one. I had the laserdisc for years and years, but it's not the full width of CInemascope as it should have been (MGM was notorious for clipping the sides of their widescreen movies on laser; Fox was bad about doing that as well), so I burned a DVD-R of the film off TCM the last time it showed.

The aspect ratio is better on this print and the color is better (looked washed out on the laserdisc), but it's Eastmancolor, so it wasn't going to be that rich Technicolor look regardless.

I'm back for a bit.  It was lovely to see DRs SINGDAW, FJL, and the always companionable JoseS, as well as the talented Skip Kennon, whose music was beautiful and whose accompanying was stupendous.  This was program of four one-act plays, all well staged and well-performed.  I wasn't wild about all four, but none of them were slipshod and amateurish in the writing or direction.

My only quibble with Skip's one-act was that it needed more staging than the playwright wanted: I got tired of watching the actor and actress playing James M Barrie and his wife sit, sip tea, talk and sing.  A footman serving them, or some movement from them around the table, might have livened things up a bit.  The music was quite lovely with some wonderful moving inner lines in the accompaniments.  I thought Ann Talman was just right - proper, a little fragile, reminding me a bit of Mary Tyrone - and John Hickock was a perfect match, with a nice Scots accent.

Re: last night's dinner at Cloud 9 -

We arrived on time, barely.  Dang, parking is a monster in Rehoboth during the summer.

We took pictures of everything, of course.  I'll leave it to Der Brucer to post them.

We started with a cocktail each.  He had a Cloud 9 Cosmo, which involves Absolut Mandarin, Cointreau, Blue Island Schnapps, sour mix, and some Sprite.  It's the first Cosmo I've ever seen that is blue!  I was more predictable, having a Maker's Mark Manhattan.

For my appetizer, I had the Tempura Lobster Tails, with a sweet chili sauce and chipotle mayo for dipping.

Der Brucer had Pan Roasted Clams and Andouille Sausage, with a white wine broth and garlic toasts.

For his entree, der B dined on the Baked Halibut with a panko/horseradish crust and topped with a bit of lobster.

For myself, I had a marvelous Rib Eye (medium-rare) with Bourbon Shrimp.

We accompanied our dinners with a Spy Valley Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand (04) and a Castoro Pinot Noir, Nacido, Santa Barbara (04), respectively.

Der Brucer had to bitch comment to the restaurant's owner, John, that the menu that is now being served at Cloud 9 is nothing like what was posted on-line.  It wasn't until this morning that I realized that the on-line menu was posted by a restaurant service, and isn't Cloud 9's own website at all.  I'll be appologizing to John next time I see him at the store.

Well, it was lovely to leave work 3 hours early, meet my DH and DS for a movie, go out for dinner, and be home with some evening leftover.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was fun.  There's one musical sequence, though, that sounds to me just like one of the major themes from Les Miz.  Not that there's anything wrong with that....

We dined a TGI Friday's (DS Rob's choice) and I had a surprisingly good grilled salmon and pasta dish.

Glad to see the good medical report from DR td's mother and to see DRs JMK and MusicGuy back from vacations.

Hello, DRs!

I spent a delightful afternoon at the theatre with DRs elmore3003, FJL, and JoseSPiano.  DR elmore3003 already described the piece in his post a few pages back, as did DR Julie a few weeks ago.  Like DR Julie, I liked the two items in the second half better, the latter of which was Skip's musical.  What Skip calls his "impressionist" score was really quite lovely, and it fit the requirements of the piece beautifully.  And he played it exquisitely, as well.  The two actors acquitted themselves well, I thought.

Since DR Jane likes little kid stories  here is one more.

I can't remember if i've mentioned this here but i am really into scrapbooking.

Anyhow my niece (who will turn 2 next month) loves to do her own pages.

I know it probably sounds stupid. But i let her pick out her paper. And then she draws (scribbles on it) with scrapbooking markers.

I let her pick which stickers she wants  and let her put them where she wants to put them.  And if there is something that needs glue, i glue it, hand it to her and she decides where it goes.

She is very into buttons right now. Although sometimes when she's over she will try to pick off ones that have previously been glued down.  Then she looks at me and says "glued down?" and i nod.

I know this part might also sound dumb but i think she is quite artistic. She has this thing now where she likes to put stickers to partly cover the buttons  (it looks really cute).

She's completed 4 pages  now and they are actually quite cute!

I am listening to the soundtrack from a film I have not seen, "New York New York". The Title theme song sounds as if it will be have a life. But then what do I know?

It's a love-it-or-hate-it movie.
I saw it on opening twice and loved it, my only complaint being the twenty-minute long pregnancy.
I saw the revised version, featuring the entire "Happy Endings" sequence, also on its opening night, and had NO complaint except that Mary Kay Place wasn't used enough.
I've since seen it countless times in each of its video incarnations, the finest one being the laserdisc.
The dvd is lovely, but, how in the world could both MGM AND MARTIN SCORSESE allow it NOT to be anamorphically enhanced is beyond me!

Jane, we drove north through town this morning, so the kids got to see the park, but they were so anxious to get home to the dogs they didn't want to stop at all (there was great gnashing of teeth when Betsy and I insisted we do a few "pit stops").

"Taming of the Shrew" was enjoyable, if a bit long for two kids (2 hours, 40 minutes).  Petruccio sang "Where is the life that once I led" (though not to the Porter tune), an in-joke that I evidently was the only one getting (it's so embarrassing when you're the only one laughing in an audience of a thousand or so).  There was some modernist schtick that bugged me, but overall it was a fine production.

A New York man retired.  He wanted to use his retirement money wisely, so it would last, and decided to buy a home and a few acres in Portugal.  The modest farmhouse had been vacant for 15 years; the owner and wife both had died, and there were no heirs.

The house was sold to pay taxes.  There had been several lookers, but the large barn had steel doors, and they had been welded shut.

Nobody wanted to go to the extra expense to see what was in the barn, and it wasn't complimentary to the property anyway... so, nobody made an offer on the place.

The NY guy bought it at just over half of the property's worth; moved in, and set about to tear in to the barn. curiosity was killing him.  So, he and his wife bought a generator and a couple of grinders... and cut thru the welds.

  What was in the barn?

That SOUND OF MUSIC preview that was posted earlier today reminded me of a dream I had last night that I wanted to ask edi about.

In the dream, I watched a TV-movie that was really well done.  A young man was badgered and harassed unfairly as a new student at a private university.  A week later (in my dream) the movie was shown again, and I encouraged everyone I knew to watch it.  However, when the film was shown the second time, it had been re-edited, and the young innocent was the nearest thing around to the devil; and everything the others did to him was out of self-preservation.

What I wondered was whether or not it would be possible to take all the same original footage, and make two entirely different movies out of it through editing?

I spent the entire evening watching the first quarter of the season of UGLY BETTY. It remains a sweet, charming, funny, bitchy lark of a show. More than ever, I find Justin, the nephew, steals every scene he's in. He is adorable.

I didn't remember that Christopher Gorham's accountant character was introduced in a very early episode about expense accounts and there weere no sparks with Betty at all. A couple of episodes later when he returned, wow!

On the first disc in the set, the pilot has a running commentary with the director of the pilot along with the head writer and one of the producers. Lots of fun facts during their lively give-and-take. The pilot was shot in NYC, of course, but when it was picked up for a series, the filming was moved to Hollywood, so the Brooklyn shots on Betty's street are now CGI. Very obvious in the later episodes to notice it once they let the cat out of the bag.

I only got about halfway through the Halloween episode (Betty dressed as a butterfly trying to find a watch Daniel misplaced at one of his lady friend's apartments.), but my favorite episode so far is the one where Justin was taken to MODE for a day to observe for a school report (only it was a lie so he could go to his "dream place.")

Just finished doing a lovely telephone interview with a lovely actress by the name of Jewell Lain, star of SUICIDE BATTALION (1957) and CRASH LANDING (1958). What a wonderful chat we had!!! She is starting up her career again, but is having that trouble that all actresses of a certain age have...finding parts for older women.

She had lost touch with various people she enjoyed back during her career and it turned out that she (as I mentioned last week) had worked with my friend Laurie Mitchell in 1955 in the play THE FIFTH SEASON at the Carthay Theater. I put them in touch with each other and they had a very nice lunch and visit this week.

Now I am going to try and locate Marsha Hunt's contact info. They worked in a play also and, in fact, Jewell was married in Marsha's back yard.

DR TCB - that barnyard link was incredible!  Thank you so much!

I popped in another Elvis movie tonight, one that I hadn't seen before:
LIVE A LITTLE, LOVE A LITTLE, which was diverting.  Rudy Vallee and Don Porter provided good support, as did Dick Sargent.  Leading lady Michele Carey was weird, both acting and character wise.  Albert the Dog was fun.
But, I didn't know until I read the back of the dvd box, that this was where on of my favorite Elvis songs originated: "A Little Less Conversation."
Actually for a later Elvis movie, there really weren't a lot of songs, but there was a lot of peek-a-boo would-be nudity, including a delicious shower scene.   ;D

My, oh, my...what a weird, weird day...

I nearly got into a fight with a customer. Well, I did get into a fight - a verbal one - with her, but I mean I nearly hauled off an smacked her in her ass face. The jist of the thing is, she asked - no, demanded - an exchange, which I don't do (and there are signs on my downstairs booth informing patrons that there are no refunds or exchanges), and she wouldn't take no for an answer. She created a scene at my booth and scared away half of my customers and then tried to sell the t-shirt she didn't want to the customers who were brave enough to stay. At one point, one of the other patrons actually turned to her and say, "My God! You're really annoying!"

She hung around my booth making a fool of herself for damn near 25 minutes, and after telling her that I frankly didn't care about her daughter (for whom she professed to be buying the shirt), or that tomorrow is her 50th birthday or anything else she'd been ranting about for all of my walk-out, I tossed the shirt she wanted to her and said, "Take the Goddamned shirt and leave."

I'm not one to lose my temper with customers, but she really got under my skin. And, I have to be honest...it felt good to just be angry and let it out for once rather than hold it in and take it out on someone else.

And the box office people really appreciated the show, and agreed 100% that she was being incredibly rude and I should have called security to have her removed from the building.

And that was all before 4:00 this afternoon!!

Dinner and the evening show were, thankfully, much more pleasant, and the post-show events with DRs Cason and Jose were joyous and fattening.

The weather today was so unbelievably beautiful. I spent a good portion of both shows today sitting out on 45th Street reading my book. I'm still amazed, though, by the number of  people who see nothing wrong with walking up to you and asking you what you're reading and then wanting to have a full-on conversation. Can't they see that I'm trying to read??

Still, dessert with Cason and Jose was a wondermous way to end the evening. And I'm glad to have been able to show Cason around backstage (Jose's seen it already).

Good Evening!

Back from a most loverly day.

It was good to see DRs singdaw, elmore and FJL and his ever-lovin' Skip again earlier this afternoon at 59E59.  I liked the four one-acts.  Well, I liked three of the one-acts, and the other one just had me puzzled from the get go, and I felt the two actresses were trying to channel Marian Seldes and Bernadette Peters circa 1980.  Or something like that.

And it was nice hear Skip piano-playing/accompanying too, and playing his own music no less.  Makes me want to practice my scales and arpeggios again.  -Although, with all the dance breaks in Mary Poppins, I already know I'll have to get my technique back up to snuff.

I am intrigued with the idea of MR BK's toiletries and clothing items winging across the country on their own.

All of those strangers touching the items and not realizing to whom they belong....their ultimate destination...or that they are having a brush with Destiny....The Brain from Planet X....

Is the Brain flying across the country, too?

But sure as a star
Where ever we go we'll have weather.

No clouds, no storms, no rains,

What I wondered was whether or not it would be possible to take all the same original footage, and make two entirely different movies out of it through editing?

Yes: a good movie and a bad movie!

When a group of editors learned the AVID system in class, we were all given the same raw footage from dailies of some tv western and were told to edit it into a scene. Everybody edited it as it was supposed to be, except for me. (We had headphones on so no one could listen to the other.) I found scraps of dialogue and moments between the takes and took lines out of context to make it a sweet love scene between the two cowboys. Everyone was amazed by it (to be fair, most of these editors did corporate stuff and news, not drama) and that something emotional could be brought out of the pretty standard material. (Music always helps!)

To this day, the instructor still shows that sequence after his students have finished, to prove to them that even if they get bad material, sometimes they can still make something of it if they use their imagination.

What I wondered was whether or not it would be possible to take all the same original footage, and make two entirely different movies out of it through editing?

Well, you are stuck wih the dialogue that was recorded, so that limits you somewhat. But as Vixmom's trailers prove, you can do a lot with editing. An example of how you could almost pull this off is a French film called "He Loves Me... He Loves Me Not" with Audrey Tatou. You see the same storyline from the point of view of the two characters. In Audrey's version, she's a woman having an affair with a married man. In his view, she's a crazy stalker! There is the same dialogue and series of events, just different points of view. I recommend it highly!

Cason - I may have missed the discussion, but are you going on in a really major role on Monday?  Will we have to kick ourselves if we're forced to miss it?  (Obviously, we're looking forward to seeing you in Brain, which we wouldn't miss under penalty of bitch-slapping.)

Since we were extended, I am being given a performance in one of the male's roles.
I don't think you'll kick yourselves if you miss it.
I am just looking at it as a time to have fun -- but I suggest you save it for The Brain!

DBF has used FinalCut Pro before. Are you familiar with that Edi?

I am. It seems to be taking the market and I probably should learn it, but I've been working on AVID since '92 and it's still the preferred system in most post houses.

A lot of my friends cut on it---a very powerful product!

We'll still try to make it, of course, since we have the tickets.  (The only real problem right now is an all-afternoon work-through Skip has on Monday with the Last Starfighter choreographer, which may be exhausting.)

Some of the things they wore on Solid Gold and Soul Train were interesting to say the least

See, don't fret -- I am going in for the 2pm show.  I mean, I'll most likely play the lawyer at the 7pm one, but don't feel like you have to break your backs trying to make it all work out.
