Title: I, TUNES
Post by: bk on August 20, 2007, 12:38:52 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were tuneful and, in other words, flew you to the moon, and now it is time for you to post until the  I, Cows to come home.

Good morning, all! The laundry is in the washers, and I have to think about what I am taking to DC.

I have a ticket to a Fringe show at 5, but I may pass it up depending on the weather, which seems quite windy and chilly at the moment.  I may also make a run to the NYPL for a bit of research on special collections around the country.  It all depends on the weather.

None of the reviews particularly liked Grease (surprise, surprise) though they didn't draw their knives. I was hoping to see it through TKTS (I refuse to pay even $72.50) but it may not be up there. Oh, well. If I miss it, I can live with myself. I only want to see it so I can know what I'm talking about when I dismiss it  ;)

DP Colin is at this moment organising a group booking for a local production of "Blood Brothers".  BB and "The Producers" are the shows of choice for many non-professional companies  at the moment.  Dreary.

DP is NOT booking a ticket for me.

Happiest with how I looked when I was in the 110 - 115 range

Yesterday I discovered that my Family Tree is on the NET. (My maternal grandmother's family).

More importantly - I am now listed on said tree (despite my twig being removed and grafted elsewhere when I was 10 days old).

Monday morning greetings!  Today's my day off and I'm taking my mother to a 1pm showing of the Hairspray movie.

DH Richard will probably be involved with his mother today, too.  He took her to the ER about 10pm last night and she was admitted to the hospital with gastro-intestinal difficulties.  This is a fairly frequent occurrance, but not to be minimized at her age (90).

DR Elmore is right. No reference to it, but I found it very obvious. All of his outfits came with matching touring caps.

I still haven't gotten to the sequel, but I suspect a (female) girl friend will have been found for him.

It's now 65, going up to a predicted high of 66, with rain.

For years and years, my weight stayed between 150-155.  I've been five pounds less, and, this year, five pounds higher.  Might find time to hit the gym today.

I really loved THE WAY WE WERE, but I had a few problems with it. The editing in the second half that deleted a lot of Hollywood blacklist sequences lessed the film for me.

Redford is a dreamboat in the film, but I found his 40s hairstyle anachronistic, especialy for someone in the service.

I remember the VARIETY review for the film said, "Streisand sings the (weak) title song." How wrongheaded can a reviewer be?
Title: Re:I, TUNES

My weight has had big fluctuations down through the eyars. When I graduated from college, I weighed 145. By the time I turned 40, I had risen to 180 which is the weight I would love to be if I could melt off the excess pounds I carry now (195).

The heaviest I ever got was 229 which happened during my first year of retirement where in celebration I ate whatever I wanted, did no exercise, and just blew up like a balloon. When I realized that at that weight I totally lacked stamina to do shows and move, I dropped 41 pounds during that next year. In the years that have followed, I continue to exercise five times a week, but the weight continues to creep back up or slowly go down depending on my appetite.

But at a few years from 60, I've decided I'm not going to obssess about it any more. I'll do what I can to exercise and not eat stupidly, but I refuse to starve myself to be as thin as I was when I was younger. In how ever many years I have left, I'm not going to be miserable.

Good morning!

It's going to be 96 today. No rain or let-up in temperature and humidity in the forecast.

I hate summer.

Here is an excerpt from today's paper, The Arizona Republic:

"The Valley record for the number of days in a year to reach at least 110 degrees is 28. We are now at 26 and counting.

The chances are very good that we could break the record soon because the National Weather Service is forecasting above-average temperatures through the week."

Tonight I also planed to record the Rosalind Russel 1942 movie version of MY SISTER EILEEN which I've never seen. I've seen the Betty Garrett musical, of course, and I watched Russell in the TV version of WONDERFUL TOWN at the Museum of TV and Radio, but I've never seen this original film, so I'll record it and watch tomorrow. TOD:

Thinnest without trying: high school years

Still thin, but with a little more effort: college years

THEN I really started to pack on the pounds.  Now out of college a little over 20 years, I hit my heaviest about 3 years ago.  I had to go on statins for high cholesterol, and my blood pressure was borderline.  And yet, even then, it wasn’t until I feared that my excess weight might be affecting my singing voice that I became motivated.  Although, looking at some opera singers, I’m not sure that there’s any correlation.  But anyway…

With concerted effort, plus the help of a nutrionist, I’ve lost about 75 pounds.  Though heaven knows, I still have a ways to go, I feel great, and I’m off all the medications.  And I do know that, much as I hate to exercise, I can see that I won’t have the quality of life that I want without investing some serious time doing it from here on in.

Besides, I enjoy eating too much not to do something that allows me a little “wiggle” room!  ;)

TOD - I'm heavier now than I've ever been before, but between a full time job that includes a 50-mile round trip commute there's no time for a comprehensive fitness program.

Several years ago, I took one of those health/longevity assessments that factored in things like heredity, diet, lifestyle, etc. and it concluded that, if I changed a few habits and lost more than a few pounds, I'd live seven months longer.  At that point, I said, "Forget it - I'd rather enjoy the ice cream now!"

DR Edi has joined us. Good morning Georgia.
Was it a Rainy Night In Georgia?

Hi, Tom! I was catching up from last night and didn't get to today's posts until I was at work, waiting for footage to roll in.

I have a version of "Perfidia" that I'm sure you probably don't have. It's in storage now, but when we're moved in, I'll send it to you, just so your collection will be complete-r.

And no rainy nights here, unfortunately, nor days. We are in the middle of a severe drought---all our hydrangeas are barely alive and huge trees are falling at an alarming rate in our neighborhood. (One as I just happened to be driving past it!)

And temps still in the high '90's-low 100's. Great time to ne packing in a house with no central A/C!

I have family tree question....

my mom has a cousin (their moms were sisters)

that cousin has a daughter, that daughter has a daughter..

what is the relationship between me and my mom;s 1st cousin, between me and her daughter, between me and her grandaughter?

And what are the relationships between my daughter and those peopel?

I have heard 1st cousin once removed, 2nd cousin.. etc anyone have any ideas?

and congratualtions on grafting yourself back on the tree Tomovoz!

Vixmom's Mum                                  Her sister
Vixmom               1st generation        Sisters Daughter
Vixter                  2nd generation        Sister's daughter Daughter

You would be a neice to Your mother's sister, and her daughter would be your first cousin

Vixter would be a second cousin to the granddaughter.

Since you have differing generations... You would be a first cousin once removed to the baby. You are a first cousin to the mother of the baby. The baby is a new generation thus making it once removed from you.

Vixter would be a grand neice to your mum's sister.

I hope this makes sense...

As for the Topic of the Day...

Hmm... Thinnest had to be at birth.  I was always a "husky child".  In high school, I had a bigger issue with the waist size of my uniform pants than I did with my actual weight.   -And that's still basically the issue I have now.  Losing weight means I can buy and wear smaller jeans.  ;)

As for the figures, hmm... I remember crossing the 200 mark sometime in high school - maybe even junior year.  In college, I remember stepping on the scale and being around 235, which would have been my heaviest, but I would usually hover around 220-225.

In the fall of 2002, I made a concerted effort to lose some weight, and I got down to 210 - which is basically where I hover now.  Strangely enough, I'm basically down to a 36-37 inch waist - which was the waist size I was my junior year in high school.  At my heaviest - and roundest - I had a 42-inch waist.

*Of course, I wear a size 36 in jeans.  For slacks and dress slacks, I wear a 38 usually depending on the cut.

OH!

And I have mentioned this before, but...

There is this choreographer I work with from time to time who swears there's no way I weigh over 200.  And he really means it.  And this from someone who makes a living looking a people's bodies and checks to see if what is listed on their resume matches what he see in person.  -And has no problem telling someone that need to lose five pounds.  He tells me I can't be more than 180, 185.  So, that assessment always keeps me happy.  ;)

This is your mom's first cousin.  This is your first cousin, once removed.

Quote
that cousin has a daughter, that daughter has a daughter.

This is (1) your second cousin; and (2) your third cousin.

Quote
what is the relationship between me and my mom;s 1st cousin, between me and her daughter, between me and her grandaughter?

I think I might have enjoyed LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE even a little less than you did, DR Ron Pulliam. It was OK, but I found the ending very frustrating leaving everyone basically unsatisfied and all loose ends of their lives dangling. I didn't find any of the characters very affable or fun to spend time with. And the comic set pieces just didn't make me laugh (which is the main barometer for a comedy.)

I find much more humor in TV comedies right now than I find at the movies.

GREASE (current) and HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL are such formulaic bastardizations of a form that I love, that it is difficult for me to remain calm when they are being discussed.

As for the reviewer's comparison of this production with June Allyson and Van Johnson musicals ... well he does a great disservice to June and Van and steps GREASE way up in class....

TOD:

Thinnest--105 after one summer when I was working construction and was in great shape, and then had my tonsils out and couldn't eat solid foods of a week. I went back to college a few weeks after than and didn't even weigh enough to give blood. That was amazing! (Everyone thought I looked too thin, but I felt good.)

Now I weigh almost twice that! It's kind of like what I'm facing with packing things up---I never realized how much stuff I had accumulated for 27 years without even noticing.

The last 10 years of editing have been especially hard on my waistline. (What waistline?) I had double sessions most days and no exercise, and eating late at night---everything bad you can do, basically. And in addition to my paying jobs, I always have at least one labor of love that takes up my spare time, but which I need for my mental health.

But I'm hoping that now we have moved, I can:
1. Start cooking at home instead of a 90 degree kitchen
2. Walk to work when possible
3. Say no to extra projets more often!

I will have much more time not having a big commute every morning! And the neighborhood we're moving to is very hilly and there are always people out walking it.

The success stories on HHW are inspiring to me!

My! Aren't we getting personal? :)  OK, since you're all so good about sharing your weight stories--and yes, they are interesting and inspiring--I'll share mine.

I never had any problems with my weight when I was younger. I was always thin and didn't have to diet. Since the age of 20, I have, however, tried to eat a healthy diet and keep desserts and junk food under control. Twice in my life I've gained, 20 pounds each time, but managed to get rid of it. Until a few months ago I weighed 125 lbs, which I never expected to get down to or maintain at my age. (I'm 5'6".) I've always said that if I wanted to gain I'd know how to do it: just eat ice cream. Well, under stress I started eating ice cream and, yup, gained 10 lbs. That's got to go. I'm taking a gradual approach--smaller servings of the no-no's, plus exercising again, which I wanted to resume, anyway. But my year at 125 showed me that I CAN do it.

TOD|:

Growing up I was always way too skinny and I hated it. When I graduated high school I was 125 pounds and stayed at that weight until I was in my early 30s...I was underweight and looked terrible. I was also a heavy smoker from age 18 to my mid 30s, so that likely just added to my underweightedness.

Around age 33 or so I started to gain weight and started to get a bit of a belly...I joined a gym and quit smoking and got to a nice, slim, but muscular 160 pounds which fit me nicely for 5 or 6 years.

Then I bought a house and  stopped going to the gym regularly and started eating ice cream and going out for pancake breakfasts with my buddy Mark and the pounds slowly accumulated again...now I am up into the 180s.

180 is still an ok weight for me, but I would like to get some of the flab to turn back into muscle. For my age I think I look Ok, but I now if I got back into the gym routine I would feel better and my blood sugar and cholesterol and things of that nature would all be much better off.

BK, I caught ALL FALL DOWN for the first time a couple of years ago...and quite fell in love with it, despite its imperfections.

In high school and up till my mid-thirties, I stayed in pretty good shape and was probably at my peak weight when I was at around 170.  I see-sawed throughout my mid-thirties into my mid-forties, when I actually got down to my high-school weight again.  But that didn't stay long, though at that point in my life, it was probably too thin.  Things levelled off between 180-190 through the rest of my forties.  My avatar here reflects that time.  Things are inching up too much these days and I've just ordered a treadmill.

I, too, had no weight problems as a child. During college I weighed around 115 to 120. My lowest weight was when I was on the road doing Sesame Street Live and wearing a full body costume, sweating away for more than 8 shows a week (on the weekend sometimes we did as many as 3 shows a day on Saturday and Sunday, Equity concessions to get the contract). At that time I weighed 106. When I came back to the city I gained about 10 pounds and went back to my average 115-120 weight. Then when I was around 45 years old I started gaining weight and topped out at around 138-140. I know it doesn't sound like a lot but on a small frame (I'm 5' 3") 140 is big. I can also be cheap when I want to and I was determined NOT to buy a closet full of new clothes. When I turned 50 (in 2003) I joined Weight Watchers and I dropped about 15 pounds (140 to 125) again, it doesn't sound like a lot but as they said in Weight Watchers, go to the produce section and pick up a 15 pound bag of potatoes and carry it with you as you walk around the store. You'll see how much it really weighs. Long story short, I kept the weight off for a while and then went back to the old ways of eating and not exercising. I felt the pounds creeping back and decided it was best (especially because my cholesterol was getting out of control as well) to begin eating healthy again. I'm now back down to approximately 115. I've been there for about a year and it's easy to maintain and I feel much better. Because I exercise regularly (I try to ride the stationary bike every day but sometimes I don't have the time) and eat well 99.99% of the time I feel I can indulge on special occasions (like an HHW gathering) without worry of gaining back lost pounds. Just because you overindulge one day doesn't mean you will gain back all the weight you lost overnight. As long as you eat well and do some kind of exercise, you're on the right track and you should be able to maintain. And that is my weight gain and loss story.

TOD:

As an adult I was at my lowest of 135 (after leaving the hospital after a bout with Hepatitis).

The first time I quit smoking I went from 156 to 196 in no time at all. I lost all the excess poundage in two ways; first a live-style chance of replacing Budweiser with Miller Lite (and at an average of 4-5 cans per day, that adds up). I also had my own loose-weight diet - steak, fresh tomatoes, and lots of cucumbers!

The next big weight surge came the second time I quit smoking - I had been in the hospital with double pneumonia and an esophageal infection; I couldn't swallow well, and lost lots of weight; I had trouble inhaling, so I couldn't smoke. When I was discharged, I considered starting smoking again - but I realized that the four weeks of forced abstinence had put me over the hurdle of nicotine withdrawal - resumption seemed just stupid! The Doctor was greatly concerned about my weight loss (funny thing, that not-eating stuff) and insisted putting me on a high fat/high-protein diet. The dietician urged me to eat lots of donuts, bowls of ice cream and milk shakes. Well, not smoking and that diet got me over 200lbs in record time!

Now, I eat what I want and reside comfortably at around 185 - where is right where the Doc wants me.

Of course, I still have those great double-knit leisure suits with 30" waist pants I long to wear again.

From a TV GUIDE (http://community.tvguide.com/blog/TV-Show-Blog/Company/800054459) commentary on last nights COMPANY:

Quote
Truly, it seems, the Cold War was a grand debacle, perhaps summed up best by Michael Keaton ’s Angleton in his greenhouse conversation with Chris O’Donnell ’s Jack: "We’re all lost, Jack. We’re lost in the wilderness of mirrors."

Thay failed to comment on the great camera work surrounding the scene. We are inside a large greenhouse where Angleton is tending his orchids. At the "wilderness of mirrors" line we slowly pull back to outside and above, and see the characters below through the many greenhouse roof window panes.

I hope COMPANY gets TNT a load of well deserved Emmys for this mini-series.

The Chicken Suit

I know what you’re thinking: no clucking way. But the fact is, after century after century of having to watch chickens parade about naked, artist Edgar Honetschlager has  taken the situation into his own hands. After dreaming of a world where chickens were given their dignity back, the Austrian artist got the backing of several Japanese investors and set out to cloak our feathered brethren in the most fashionable ways he could think of.

In my adult life, the lightest was 160 at age 23 (after losing 30 lbs).  Heaviest was 211.  Currently at 206 and just re-joined the Dubs (WW), so hopefully it'll keep going down.  Happiest weight was when I was a lithe, muscular kid chasing horses around, unaware that weight was ever an issue for anyone.

So, that assessment always keeps me happy.  ;)

Jose, I always get that too.  "You do NOT weigh 200 lbs."  Um... actually, I weigh a bit more than that... Flattering, but dangerous.   :)

Forgot this bit:  I would be happy to hover around 150-160, I think.  But I don't remember what that was like.  I guess just watching the numbers and the belt holes going down makes me happy.

TOD:
Well, yes, this is a personal topic, isn't it?
Obviously, at birth we all weighed the least (barring any infancy infections which caused us to lose weight).
As for myself, I remained thin and angular until the third grade.  It was at that point in time that I was put on prescription prednisone, which puffed my cheeks (butt and facial) and began a weight gain which continued for quite a while.
When I graduated high school, I weighed in at 326 pounds.
When I started college the following fall, I weighed 170 pounds.
I went from a 46 inch waist to a 32 inch waist in the space of a summer, thanks to proper diet and exercise.  No drugs were involved.
There was a point, when I began working a Carnegie Mellon in the early 80s, that I was down to a 28 inch waist and carried 130 pounds on a six-foot-two frame.
These days, my weight goes between 180 and 220 depending on the season, and my waist fluctuates between 40 and 38 inches.
Right now, I'm wearing size 38 inch shorts, though last summer at this same time, I was down to 36 - accounted for by the constant lifting, non-sleeping, non-eating, non-everything of working the graveyard shift (10pm - 6:30am).
Now I'm not lifting merchandise except to put in my shopping cart, but am still walking miles a day.
There's not much extra on the old bones, but enough to drop it as the year progresses.

ps - I'm almost certain that there are photos of nearly every stage of these weighty issues.

Had a nice meeting, which was interrupted by the kind of phone call I just didn't need or want - our two current offers can't do it, and, as if that weren't bad enough, our General Mills got a big-paying job that he can't turn down and so had to bow out (that's the Equity rule for NYMF - the actors can bow out at any time if they receive a paying or even non-paying job).  So, we're now without four cast members and I'm going insane.  I've just put in a call to Gerritt Graham again, to see if there's any way to work him out - if not, my casting guy is bringing in a few people and we'll have a casting session Wednesday evening.  I cannot believe we are going to go into rehearsals on Wednesday without a fully cast show.  Frankly, I'm ready to chuck the whole damn thing.  In thirty-eight years of being in this business, I have NEVER been through anything like this.

I've only tried to lose weight once:  About six and a half years ago, my friend Margo wanted to adopt another baby from China, but didn't want to have to buy two seats for herself (she is also a large person), so she checked out several weight-loss programs and decided on this particular program that was offered through Group Health in Seattle, but a couple of their people drove down to Olympia to run the program here.  It was like OptiFast in that it was an all-liquid meal replacement plan, but it wasn't as calorically restrictive.  Their edict is NO LESS than 1000 calories a day.  It was great watching her lose the weight.  I decided (pretty much on a whim) to try it also.  In about 10 months, I lost 120 pounds!  I loved it...for the most part (I did get a little bored after a while, but added fruits and vegetables, mainly fruits).  Anyway, the program was offered by a company that contracted through Group Health and in the fall of 2002, they (the company) decided that they weren't making enough money on the Olympia contingent (at least, that's our theory), so the pulled the plug.  Those bastards!  They abandoned us!  And as you all know, reality set in and I and several others went back to our old ways (a couple other people who work here went through the program, also).  I've gained back most but not all of it (I'm about 30 pounds less now than my heaviest), and have pretty much maintained where I am for the last year and a half...that's gotta count for something, right? ;)

I have no problem with folks getting enthusiastic about the GREASE movie (or even the said-to-be-mediocre new revival) or HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 1 or 2.

If any of these shows bring a kid to musical theater and make him a fan, I think that's a positive especially in these days of non-music music. For all their flaws, these shows do contain singable songs.

They have plenty of time to learn about the real cream of musical theater once they get hooked on the form.

I did think of it but they are not a good mix!

I did do a Disc of versions of "Georgia On My Mind" and "Rainy Night In Georgia" - both songs I like a lot.

BK, you might talk to Alex Rybeck: he and Sara Lazarus are doing their musical theatre seminar at the moment, and it end this week, I believe. Alex asked me to be on the panel tomorrow night, but I'm out of town.  They 've worked with tons of great performers in these things and he may have some ideas once you describe the roles to him.

The problem with NYMF is it has become something it was not intended to be - about "names."  They want to send out a press release touting the "name" performers in the shows (never mind that I've seen the list and haven't heard of half these people), and that's not what this festival started out to be about - it was about the SHOWS, not the cast members.  Pity the show that just decided to get the best possible people for each role - if they're not "names" they won't be in the press release - I've written NYMF and talked to the overall PR guy, who is a big fan of mine and he totally gets what I'm saying, so that, at least, is good.  So, it somehow becomes that the shows to see are the shows with the "names" which is hardly what it should be about.  Names are great but the shows that don't have them (and I don't count myself as one of those shows, since Barry Pearl has more credits on his little finger than most of these people will have in their lives, and Alet is not exactly chopped liver) should not suffer because I'm sure there are good shows that don't have names and people should see them and not be waylaid by lists that, in the long run, are meaningless - the play's the thing.

Bruce - regarding that list of shows with names in them, almost all of the shows listed with "names" on that list are from the Next Link portion of the productions as opposed to the Invited Works, which makes logical sense since the Next Link shows have known that they were in NYMF much longer than the Invited works. So logically the Next Links would be finished with their casting process sooner than the Inviteds.

Sorry for venting, but had I known all this beforehand I simply would have said no, or I would not have let my casting guy talk me out of beginning casting the third week of July - he fought to wait until two weeks ago, saying we had a better chance of getting people without conflicts.  Sadly, that has proven not to be the case and several good people were snapped up before I came into town.  And it didn't help to be jerked around by an actress for over a week.

Now, I eat what I want and reside comfortably at around 185 - where is right where the Doc wants me.

der Brucer

Of course, I still have those great double-knit leisure suits with 30" waist pants I long to wear again.

My cooking helps with the weight, of course.

And I thought you left most of those leisure suits back in Long Beach!

My lowest weight, which I maintained for over fifteen years, was 137 pounds, all during my acting days (because I felt the camera really did add a few pounds).  Size 30 waist.  After that, it was too difficult to maintain, and I went up to about 150, where I stayed until the Totally Hidden Video days and the beginning of the Varese days.  Sitting in editing rooms all day and snacking relentlessly got me up to 178, my then highest.  In the second year of Varese I dropped back down to about 148 and over the next few years I fluctuated between 148 and 158.  And then it all went to hell when the label thing happened.  Over the last few years I've reached my all-time outrageous weight of about 190 - 193.  Last year at this time I was back down under 170.  Then the holidays of December hit and over the next three months I gained back the weight.  I'm now around 185 and going down, baby.

Damn it to Helena!  I just wrote this very long (and for me articulate) response agreeing completely with Matt on this subject.  When I hit "Post" it disappeared.  The gist of it was that with secondary schools and high schools eliminating music and drama courses from their curriculum, this new generation is getting less and less exposure to live theater.

I will always kick myself for spending over $100.00 to see RENT on Broadway, which I thought was crap.  However, each time I meet a new young person who is auditioning for their very first show, because the got hooked on RENT; then I say AMEN to Jonathan Larson for writing that show.

On a six foot two frame, I spent most of my life weighing 145 pounds.  I mean, I was scarecrow thin.

Several years after connecting with der B, I decided it was time to quite smoking.  Which, on the second effort, took hold.

Within the next year, I gained fifty pounds.  A full 25% of my weight was new that year.

As it turns out, my father, who was also a beanpole, quit smoking at about the same time in his life.  He too went through a major weight change.

I've added a few more pounds since then, and am now very comfortable at two hundred and twenty.

Der Brucer still bemoans the loss of that skinny lost puppy he fell in love with all those years ago.  But he likes my cooking.

Talk about lousy days.

I wasn't feeling all that hot this morning, but made my way to work all the same.

Shortly after I got there, I learned that the spouse of one of my co-workers had died on Saturday.

David had had a history of heart trouble, including heart attacks.  A week or so ago, a blood clot had to be removed from his brain.  He was set to be released from the hospital soon, but suddenly took a turn for the worse.  After a very genial phone call with another of my coworkers, he laid back, and the hospital staff was unable to revive him.  He was in his mid sixties.

Larry, his spouse and one of my better friends at work, is by all accounts a basket case.

I'd only met David once, but he was obviously the rock that anchored the more active and social Larry.  Since Larry is just two days older than I, we've always had a different kind of friendship, what with the parallels and skews of our lives.  And it was impossible for me to not be thinking of him all day.

Between not feeling all that great to beging with, and the genuine depression I was feeling for Larry, I begged off taking the grandlads to the movies with der Grampa.  I caught up with my sleeping.

I'm feeling better now.  The movie der Grampa took the grandlads to see was Transformers, and he says I didn't miss anything.

I'd better get some dinner on the table.  Poached salmon with dill, scalloped potatoes, broccoli.

I will say I was the most miserable when I was my skinniest as an adult. Not about my weight, just about life in general.   I won't say the heaviest was the best, but I was happier during those times.   I tend to lose weight in the winter and when it's cooler out, so I'm thinking about joining weight watchers this fall.

And speaking of DR Cason...

After DR Jason and I had another fantastic lunch at the Spring Street Natural Restaurant (http://www.springstreetnatural.com), and a somewhat brief shopping excursion at Uniqlo (I bought some jeans, and had them altered for free!), we headed over to the Bleecker Street Theatre to see Bukowsical!.

All I will say for now is that it really is an "L.A. Show".  And even though I was only in L.A. for about three or four months with What If?, I actually got a bunch of the in-jokes about the L.A. theatre scene that no one else seemed to get.

And I'm so glad that the flying t-shirt did not land on me.  Whew!

So, after Bukowsical!, DRs Jason, Cason and I headed back to Uniqlo to pick up my jeans which turned out not to be ready, so...

We headed back up to Bleecker Street, and proceeded to take DR Cason on a tour of Bleecker Street and some other parts of the West Village.  Of course, since we were on Bleecker, we did end up at Magnolia Bakery.  We even stood in the line - it was short - even though DR Jason and myself were just getting the Banana Pudding.  However, DR Cason did end up sampling a cupcake (vanilla/vanilla).  All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable and delicious excursion.

And then...

We made our way up 8th Avenue and took a right at Greenwich Avenue.  Of course, I did make sure to point out HHW favorites Li-Lac Chocolates and Chocolate Bar.  *OH, and it appears Condomania has shuttered too. :(

Once on Greenwich, DR Jason dragged us into Carry On, Tea & Sympathy's retail store.  He then proceeded to buy Galaxy Ripple bars for all of us.  -Alas, they were out of the regular Galaxy Bars until Thursday.  DR Cason then proceeded to consume his as we continued our walk.  I believe DR Jason was saving his for his Ave Q shift tonight, and mine is still sitting in my backpack.

The Bleecker Street Theatre is basically at Broadway and Bleecker.  It's about three blocks east of the Sullivan Street Theatre.

Is Cason done now and ready for The Brain - which may now begin rehearsals on Friday rather than Thursday, depending on what happens Wednesday evening.  Since three people would be missing on Thursday anyway, it's probably fine.

Needless to say, I had a most enjoyable afternoon with DRs Jason and Cason.  After leaving Cason at the theatre for his evening show, Jason and I headed back over to Uniqlo to pick up my jeans - size 36 waist! (they only carry 36's in a 34-inch length, which is why I had to get them altered (for free), and they were ready this time.

Then Jason and I hopped back on the train uptown, and I went ahead and detrained at 23rd Street to see if I could still get my hair cut at Chelsea Barber.  Well, they do stay open until 7:00, but by the time I got there a little after 6:30, all the "waiting chairs" were full, and there was even one guy sitting in the window - which would have meant that I probably would not have gotten into a chair until around 8:00.  So... I may try to head over there before my auditions tomorrow morning.  *Although, after looking at the pictures that were taken today, my hair doesn't look that long right now.

Well, we did have one bit of nice news - we have a costume designer.  One less thing.  And apparently I'll be seeing some really good people on Wednesday night and they have all been told the deal - don't come if you're not prepared to do the show and start the next day.

We've been discussing another Fred possibility, but he's in a show until September 3rd, so given the Labor Day weekend and all, he probably wouldn't be able to start until the 5th, so I'm not sure about it.  He's a good choice, but bringing him up brought another actor to mind, someone with whom I've worked, and who's in the same show.  I've talked to him and he's checking with his agent to see if he'd be free.

bk - Even with all your casting woes, I think the one thing to keep in mind is that you're dealing with a pool of experienced actors here in NYC.  You're not dealing with LACC students.  Whoever you end up casting - and the people you've already cast - know what the deal is with NYMF (and other similar situations).  They will pick things up fast.  And after being in the room with Adam for just a few hours, I'm sure he'll have the whole "Brain Tap" sequence taught and learned in just a few hours, leaving plenty of time to review and tweak it.  I'm not disparaging your student cast at LACC, but I also just want to "remind" you that your dealing with "actors" now, not students.  -Heck, some of your cast just came off some summer-stock gigs, and if they can put up Carousel and Les Miserables(!!!) in 10-days, surely getting The Brain from Planet X in three to four weeks should be a breeze for them.

Remember.... Breathe.

Believe me, I could not be happier with the folks who are doing the show and I know they'll pick it all up wonderfully and really deliver.  What's fascinating is that all the ensemble people were brought in by our choreographer, and everyone else was cast by me, in LA (including Barry Pearl).  So, all we've needed all along are four roles.  Maddening.  But I'm BREATHING.

A monkey's delight, with fresh bananas, pineapple, and toasted pecans; dense, moist, and chunky; wrapped in cream cheese icing.

High school and college I  held a constant weight (except the summer I worked at Denny's and gained 10 lbs eating hot fudge sundaes every day -- but got back to school that fall and went back to my normal weight pretty quickly)

Weighed the most when I was pregnant with Case (gained about 40 lbs -- he was a whopper).

Weighed the least during chemo treatment -- looked like a skeleton

I've remained pretty consistent for years now -- about 6-8 lbs. over my high school weight.

I began with AS THE WORLD TURNS from this afternoon. They repeated the gay kiss from Friday, and its immediate aftermath.

You can guess what happened - gay panic in spades with the closeted guy asking his girl friend to move in with him. [sigh]

Next came HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 2. More production numbers than the first one, but basically the same kind of thing (why mess with success).

I liked the songs best that did not use so much digitizing and processing on the voices. I really HATE that sound (my freshman college roommate had Claudine Longet LPs that were nothing but synthetic singing, and when I'd put on Judy Garland, he thought HER voice was weird and sounded unnatural.)

Instead, I watched the first episode in Season Three of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. Watching this again reminded me of the repair job the writers had to do on the show at the first of this season.

Yes, they had ridded themselves of the Applewhites at the end of Season 2, but they still had that irritating and despicable Nora and the equally irritating Chow Mei. Susan's story (meeting Ian while Mike was in a coma) and Bree's blossoming affair with Orson (amid the mystery of his wife's disappearance/death) were the only plots that interested me at the first of the season.

Well... By doing that, when HSM2 goes on tour - in concert or as a stage show or as an ice show (yes, an ice show!) - the people on stage will sound exactly like they did on TV.  -Even if they're not the same people.

The walk around the Village was great fun. We laughed and laughed and dished some dirt and laughed some more and brought DR Boo-Key up to speed on his gay history and laughed and laughed some more. I finally know when I'll be back in the Big Apple, even though I don't know how long - I was hoping for at least five days/four nights:
At Birdland:
JASON GRAAE
Sunday-Monday, October 21-22 @ 7pm
Music Charge: $25

Jason Graae, who won the 2006 Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award and the 2006 New York Nightlife Award for his solo show “Coup de Graae,” was cheered by The New York Times as “an Al Jolson-like singing and dancing clown who executes lyrics with perfect comic flourishes.” Jason also won the Bistro Award for 'Best Major Engagement' and was named one of Time Out New York's 10 Best Cabaret Shows Of 2004. What IS  "Graae's Anatomy?”  It is a show where Jason sings from the heart, breathes through his nose, touches a nerve, and tickles the funny bone.  It includes Jason's somewhat twisted and sometimes even humorous take on songs by Bucchino, Sondheim, Mercer and more. Come see the man who the New York Times said is "in the twilight of his potential as a Broadway juvenile lead"! Jason Graae has appeared on Broadway in A Grand Night For Singing, Falsettos, Stardust, Snoopy! and Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up? and off-Broadway in Forever Plaid, All In The Timing and Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah, for which he received a Drama Desk Award nomination as Best Actor in a Musical.   In Los Angeles, he won an Ovation Award for Forbidden Broadway Y2KLA! and the Artistic Director's Achievement Award for Fully Committed. In LA Jason originated the role of Houdini in Ragtime; played Marcellus in The Music Man at The Hollywood Bowl; starred in Grand Hotel and The Grand Tour at The Colony Theatre as well as in many shows at Reprise. His many TV credits range from “Six Feet Under,” 'Friends” and “Frasier” to several PBS specials, and his films include Disney's “Home on the Range,” “On Edge,” “Gepetto,” and “The Dukes of Hazzard in Hollywood.”  For 5 years Jason was the voice of Lucky the Leprechaun for Lucky Charms Cereal, but lost the job when he moved to L.A. He made his Metropolitan Opera House debut as featured vocalist in Twyla Tharp's Everlast with American Ballet Theatre and made his Los Angeles Opera debut as Njegus in The Merry Widow, repeating the role with the Houston Grand Opera and New Orleans Opera.  He played Frosch in the San Francisco and Washington National Opera productions of Die Fledermaus and he was featured as Offenbach in the LA Opera's The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein with Frederica Von Stade, directed by Garry Marshall. Jason has recorded over 40 CDs, including and his two solo CDs: “You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile-Jason Graae sings Charles Strouse” and “Jason Graae LIVE at The Cinegrill” (Fynsworth Alley).

TOD:

I am, at this moment, at my lightest weight as an adult, weighing in at 189 lbs. Six and a half months ago, I was at 237 lbs. When I started Weight Watchers, my pants were size 35 or 36, depending on the cut, and now I'm down to a 30 or 32. I've gone from size L shirts (should've probably been size XL, but I was vain...fat and vain) to a size S. That, to me, is quite an accomplishment, if I do say so myself.

Looking at the pictures that I posted the other night and the ones that DR Jose posted today, I can't even believe that I'm the same person, but it must be true.

According to the Body Mass Index (the chart used by physician's to determine "optimal" weights for people), I still need to lose 15 pounds to be in the HIGH end of my ideal weight range, which means I need to be at about 173 lbs. I honestly can't remember the last time I weighed 189, let alone 173. My mom has even told me that I'm "skinny enough" and that I really don't need to lose any more. It's not about being "skinny enough," or even how I look in my clothes...I just want to be healthy.

Don't worry about the "strong ethnic look".  That's what the costume and make-up are for.
As the former Casting Consultant for this show, I can tell you for sure that they see people who are wrong for this show and put them into other shows all the time.  I'd go if I were you.

Well, it starts at 10, right?  What time/where would work for you?

I can meet whenever, wherever. You're the one who just closed a show tonight...you probably need some rest, right?

And I'm not sure what time Jose's lunch break is, but we could try to eat with him on his break... And then I was thinking about catching a movie or something before I have to go to the theatre...you're welcome to join me, if you'd like.

Title: Re:I, TUNES
Post by: DakotaCelt on August 20, 2007, 09:26:34 PM
Sorry for venting, but had I known all this beforehand I simply would have said no, or I would not have let my casting guy talk me out of beginning casting the third week of July - he fought to wait until two weeks ago, saying we had a better chance of getting people without conflicts.  Sadly, that has proven not to be the case and several good people were snapped up before I came into town.  And it didn't help to be jerked around by an actress for over a week.

U have every right to...

The situation stinks in more ways than one. I truly hope things turn out well

My copy of Sacco and Vanzetti has been shipped.

(I don't even know who they were).

Watch the trailer at our website: www.willowpondfilms.com

If you buy it from the link from our website, I believe we get a percentage from our distributor, who also has many other fine films "of interest"...

And they lowered the price! Yay!

Thank you Tom, and I hope you like it!

The problem with NYMF is it has become something it was not intended to be - about "names."

Whatever happened to being discovered? I would love to go to a show and see someone as talented as Cason et al and know that someday I would be saying I knew him when...

That's sometimes more thrilling to me than seeing a "name".

I agree about discovering talent, but when the head of the festival says they'd be stupid not to brag about the "names" when that's all that anyone cares about, then they're playing a game that was never part of their original model.  Nothing wrong with "names" but it should not be what the festival is about, and I'm afraid that's what it's turned into - I hear it all the time now from people.

I'm getting an early start tomorrow - trip to LACC to pick up a check, then to the bank to deposit said check, then picking up dry cleaning, then packing what little I'm bringing in Ye Olde Suitcase.  I actually organized everything today, plus I made a list of everything I need to bring and will check off stuff as I go through the day.  I'm hoping to get to bed by ten and then it's up at 3:45 and ride to airport will arrive at 4:15, which should get me to the airport by five.  Then I'll go to the little club where I like to sit and I should be able to post from there, presuming AppleCare did indeed fix the problem with my on location wireless.
