Title: THE FIRST DAY OF REHEARSALS
Post by: bk on August 22, 2007, 10:24:19 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were filled with merriment and mirth and laughter and legs, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - it's their first day of rehearsals for MOOSICAL, the MUSICAL.

And the word of the day is: ANACREONTIC!

Smoke on your pipe and put that in.

Well, I shall now try to sleep on this very thin mattress thing on a very hard piece of board.  Hopefully I'm tired enough that I'll just fall asleep quickly.

Well, I never really had any pets, it is hard to own a real pet when you live in an apartment. I do have a happy goldfish story though.

I won a ten cent goldfish at a carnival when I was little, so we bought a tank and kept it. Years later, it was still alive. It had a crooked tail, and seemed like it would live forever. We were going on a long vacation once and could not find someone to feed it, so we took it to a local lake and set it free. It happily swam away, and is probably still alive today.

TOD:

The following tales have been told:

Rover, the donut eating stray that endeared himself to my Mother by "protecting" my baby brother from the man down the street (unfortunately Mom was in his house chatting with his wife, and the Baby was on their porch when the man attmpted to tnter his house).

Patsy, who used to steal dead chickens from the neighboring farm and spread feathers all over the neighborhood.

The Easter ducks that would not die - and the neverending supply of breakfast duck eggs from their new home at the farm.

The neverending Easter rabbits who escaped in the wild for one wonderous night - and contaminated the gene pool for years. The population control provided by the Friedhoffers who loved Hasenpfeffer.

Sam, the tortoise shell cat that came and went via the fireplace chimney. (And who had her litter of kittens at my feet in bed - at a friend's house on out first night of a cross country trip - and spent the rest of the trip trying to throw the kittens out of the car window!)

Sidney, the blind white rat that Fred, the Boa, refused to eat one day and who became a favorite pet.

The poor young corn snake that crawled into my daughters mouse cage, ate the occupants, and was then too fat to get back out.

The look on my Wife's face when she opened her guitar case and found Fred, the boa curled up inside - she called to my son to come get his snake and was amazed to see him arrive with Fred II curled around his neck (Fred I had disappeared some weeks before and had been replaced).

My consternation when I was in the checkout line of the supermarket with my eldest when I noticed that his six foot boa was comfortably wrapped around his neck.

Tramp, the one-eyed dog who came with the house I rented in Newport RI for 2 years. I would be gone for weeks at a time, but he was always there to greet me on my return.

The cockatiel that loved blue cheese dressing and insisted on taking showers with me.

And, of course, the wonderful tales of Bonnie and Clyde (now Buster).

Title: Re:THE FIRST DAY OF REHEARSALS
Post by: elmore3003 on August 23, 2007, 05:05:41 AM
Good morning, all!  I don't like hotel beds, and much as I love staying at the Capitol Hill Suite, I was delighted to crawl into my own bed last night.  I had weird dreams about the Macbeths: I had rewritten a chart for their band, of which Lady M is the reigning diva, and because she wasn't being featured as much as she liked, they stopped rehearsing the number.

Speaking of divas, DR MichaelShayne, I don't understand the post with Ms Mayes, which seems rather hostile:  are you saying she was not wanted for the cast? Has she been cast and I missed something? I don't believe BK has any problems wth her, although I think she might be getting a bit long in the tooth for the role of Joyce and she wouldn't be someone I'd like to work with again.

So, this morning I go to the post office for my mail, then to Toyland to drop off all of my photocopies.  The trip was quite successful with one exception: we left at the Landover, MD, annex a carton of original orchestra parts to THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER, but we did cart six cartons back to DC of the original WIZARD OF OZ (nearly complete vocal score), three(!!!) vocal scores to the 1909 Montgomery & Stone hit, THE OLD TOWN, and a carton of Lionel Monckton's THE ARCADIANS, which contained an early vocal score which included in the main text and appendix around 7 numbers no longer with the score as it was finalized.

So, most of the photocopying I wanted/needed to do is completed.  I'll go back in October for the LADY OF THE SLIPPER materials: my colleague Tom Murray is in London with Jason Robert Brown's PARADE until December, so the work on LOS will slow down until then.

I may stop by Nola Studios today and catch a bit of the rehearsal and say howdy to BK, BJ, Cason, and anyone else there I know.

Ron's my best friend, and I can still remember how he blew my socks off in the 1981 Houston Grand Opera of SHOW BOAT.  He sounded like a young John Reardon, who had one of the most wonderful baritone voices around, and had a great sense of humor; he had to, since his wife Dona has one of the sharpest wits around: no wonder Charlotte is so brilliant!  I just did another chart for Ron - "I Won't send Roses" - and your post reminds me I have to make a piano reduction for him.

I slept okay - terribly uncomfortable bed unless you're the mother in Barefoot In The Park.  Shaving was interesting - the tiniest sink I've ever seen, ten minutes to get hot water, and almost impossible to get your face down there for rinsing.  Should you turn around suddenly, you conceivably could fall into the toilet.

As for pet stories... hmm...

We had hamsters and/or gerbils for a while when we lived in Seattle.  They would all eventually chew through their plastic milk carton "cage", and end up hiding somewhere in the basement.  And then they would die.

Then there was "Princess" the poodle.  A very troubled dog.  Barked at basically one.  And had a tendency to dig under the backyard fence and run off.  And bite one or two of the neighborhood children.  :-\  Needless to say, she eventually went back to the pound where my mother found her.

I also now seem to recall another dog.  Something brown.  ???

And, of course, the requisite tank of fish.  I liked the fish.

DR Cillaliz re: your comments about dick (BIG BROTHER).

No disrespect to you, but i find your feelings to be pretty similar to most of America.  They like dick a lot, think he is funny.

I'm sorry but it just really bugs me.

Dick has not been accurately portrayed (or at least a ton of really bad stuff has been left out).

HE has threatened jen repeatedly (i do not find this funny). He threatened to rape and torture jen, dustin and carol.

It just disturbs me so much that he can abuse people and the general public does not get to see this. CBS has edited him like a fun hero. And it's just totally sick.

And i personally do not see how anybody could think jen is a crybaby.

She was abused and basically tortured.  Would you be able to not eat if you felt that bad.  The Diaryroom told her she could destroy dick's cigarettes. Yet when she did they gave him new ones. She felt (whether right or wrong) that they were lying to her. And that coupled with all the venom shot her way ... made her decide to screw with them.  I actually like jen the best of all the HGs. ANd think she is quite admirable for being able to take all dick's crap.

I'm a bit confused by one of der Brucer's pet stories. DerB, you didn't notice that your son was wearing a boa constrictor around his neck until you got to the check-out counter? No one else noticed, either? No one said anything? I've witnessed people being out to lunch, but somehow I think someone would have noticed. Was something said AT the check-put counter? Like, "Excuse me, but is that a live boa constrictor around your neck?"

TOD:

When I was a little girl I had a pet hamster. One day the hamster escaped from his cage (while we were cleaning it?), and found his way down into the furnace, which was set into the floor. It was a big production as my father attempted--successfully--to get said animal out of the furnace.

Somehow, such things seem almost commonplace to me now.

Every day this week there have been stories about the floods in the Midwest including southern Minnesota (I have no family there, everyone is in the suburbs of Minneapolis) and lots of areas in Iowa. TOD:
The place where I edited our gardening show was a little cottage in the woods, behind a large house where the producer lived. It was quiet and peaceful until someone built an enormous (4 or 5 story) house behind the cottage. Then the family, with the college-aged son moved in. He used to invite his friends over and they liked to shoot bottle rockets at the cottage.

The producer's dog was afraid of loud noises---thunder, firecrackers, etc. so one day, after a large volley of firecrackers, Deion the pitbull was so frightened he took off and kept running and got totally lost.

We looked for him all week---drove around calling for him, put up flyers, talked to neighbors, but he had just vanished!

The following week we got a phone call from some people who had found him. He was over a mile from the house, lost and scared, and they picked him up in their car. (They didn't live in the neighborhood but were passing through.) They were leaving that day for vacation and didn't know how to find his owner, so they took him on vacation with them and their other dog. So while we were frantically looking for him, Deion was in the mountains hiking, eating chicken Mcnuggets and enjoying his vacation!

When they returned from their trip they drove through the area where they found him and saw our flyers. They called and arranged to drop him off. They wanted to wait until evenig so the husband could say goodbye to him. (If they hadn't found his owner they planned to keep him.) The husband actually cried when he had to leave Deion so we told him he could have "visitation rights" whenever he wanted.

So there's a GOOD pitbull story for you!

I can't think of any animal stories other then the time I had a roomate back in the 1980s who had a pet tarantula that escaped from his cage a few times. Finding him crawling about different parts of the townhouse days later was...well, thinking about it still gives me the creeps.

TOTD

I have a few...

My grandmother had a couple of curious dogs... Bob, an Australian BlueHeeler, who used to try and herd peoples shadows.  Duke, flat coated retreiever and some shepherd breed, was used to pull a wagon.

Buff... a mini poo/schnauzer had an affinity for grapes and went bonkers when you bought some.  He also LOVED the blowdryer and when I would blowdry my hair he would sit at my feet waiting for blast.

Ace (Norwegian Wood cat) loved to torment the dogs and the neighborhood dogs were terrified of him.  He liked to attack male dogs in a strategic location. He was a BIG cat and loved to hog the bed.

My mother's present dog, Mollie, a toy poo, is an interesting dog. She bangs her kennel when her dish is empty and is a cheese fiend. She hates baths but if you ask her if she wants to go for a ride, she goes bonkers.

I once co-owned a qaurter horse with my freind Sandy and her brother Keith. Dakota Bar Jack of all Trades was not a very good horse for attempting to compete in barrel racing. However he was a sweet horse to ride with a great disposition and after competition Sandy used him as a therapy horse. He was a very laid back horse.  However that is not the whole story..... When we first got Jack as he was called for short,  Matt Ashford was still on Search for Tomorrow and we used to watch religiously. Sandy's brother had a thing for Jane Krakowski. After SFT folded, Matt eventually ended up on Days, Keith in one of his quirky moods and just to annoy his sister and I placed a photo of Matt aka Jack in Jack's stall and it hung there until they had to put Jack down a few years ago.

I'm not sure if the HEROES box set is getting here today or tomorrow. It's *7* discs, so that's going to take up a major portion of my weekend watching everything that's there.

Until then, I'll continue with the last six episodes of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. There only appear to be three bonus features in the set, and there are no commentaries, so it's been pretty easy getting everything watched (so far).

Even though it's not Wednesday I do want to ask Cil how things are in Sioux City. Every day this week there have been stories about the floods in the Midwest including southern Minnesota (I have no family there, everyone is in the suburbs of Minneapolis) and lots of areas in Iowa. I know you've been having lots of rain but are you in danger of flooding also? Inquiring minds want to know.

I was wondering the same thing Ben and I hear that all this rain is also in Ohio. Not sure if Ginny is affected or not.

I did hear areas around Winona are devastated from the flash flooding especially in Rushford and Lewiston.

Ace lurked on my parents patio/deck for his victims... The town I lived in had leash laws that were not always enforced.
His favorite targets were mixed breeds and terriers. He tended to leave some breeds alone.

No fire hydrants... the town was too small and rural

as for my grandmother's dogs Bob was curious... I know dogs chase shadows but herd them. Bob also like to play catch the tire. It was a small rubber tire from a kid's trike that used to be thrown out on the lawn and he would catch. He loved to play tug of war.  He was fixed so some of his amorous ways were curtailed. Duke was odd.... He would never bark at cars coming into the yard but he would bark at the cows and teh chickens....

This has not been a good month for Minnesota:

1. Severe drought in parts of the state
2.  I-35W tragedy.  Two bridges in northern ND and nw MN have now been shut down due to  bridge inspections leaving no bridges open between Grand Forks / East Grand Forks and Pembina / Robbins...
3. Now flash floods in parts of southeastern Minnesota
4. Straightline winds damaged the fairgrounds in St. Paul

Re:  Barefoot in the Park.  I probably shouldn't admit this, but the exteriors for the film apartment were done at another building my Uncles owned (pre-renovation, as you may have guessed).

Re:  dog stories.  So many wonderful dogs, so little time.  Among my favorites--my childhood Basset Hound had a reaction to one of her puppy innoculations and her face swelled up in a bizarre fashion (think "Elephant dog", as it were).  I was maybe 4 or 5, playing with my toy soldiers on the floor when I suddenly heard both my older sisters screaming hysterically.  When I went in their room, they were both cowering on the bed, with swollen Happy just sitting there looking at them in that typically forlorn Basset fashion.

More recently (as I think we reported here), we discovered that BeeGee, who is not an outdoor dog, simply "stands up" and rings the doorbell if we leave him out too long.  :)

Good first music rehearsal vibes to the "Brain" gang in NYC today.

DR Jose, have a great time at Mary Poppins you must report back as to what the orchestration is like and what part you will be playing and what the part is like.

Saw Avenue Q yesterday in SF. Still the same fantastically creative piece of theatre I saw in NYC.  I must say, seeing this show on a Wednesday matinee with an audience of an "older" crowd was quite interesting.  You never knew if they were really offended, embarassed, or just afraid to let go and laugh.  The cast was fantastic.  The guy playing Brian (who's name is Cole Porter, how could you forget that) was the weakest link.  Basically phone is part in and looked really bored.  I might try to go again before it leaves on Sept. 2.  Trying to get the DP to go.  SInce we saw it together in NYC he doesn't feel like he needs to see something twice.  I'll keep working on it.

Matthew: Thanks for the Q tour report! Christian, who's playing Trekkie/Nicky, did the B'way production before going on tour (his wife and daughter live in California, so he's doing the CA leg of the tour) and will be returning to New York in October, I think. I really like him in the show. I don't know Cole Porter personally, but I've heard lots about him through my very good friend, Amy, who is the merch manager for the tour. If you do see the show again, find Amy and tell her that Bratwurst sends his love. She'll fall over on the floor! :)

I watched "The Closer" On Demand last night. Another very good episode. I really enjoy that show! I must check into getting the first two seasons on DVD...

After "The Closer," I turned off the TV and got to reading. I lost track of time, and at 4:00 I put down the book and took my shower. I now only have 150 pages to go on my Patricia Highsmith collection and then it goes back to the library.

What should I read next? I'm still on a classics kick. I'm thinking maybe some Jane Austen - I've never read any of her work - or perhaps some Edith Wharton. I dunno... There again, I've also been thinking of starting up "Gulliver's Travels," which I have on my shelf, but have never read. Same goes for "The Wind in the Willows." Gosh! So many choices!!

I'm also happy to report that I just got a call from TheatreWorks USA... I have an appointment for 9/7/07 to audition for their upcoming tour of A CHRISTMAS CAROL. They've been seeing me an awful lot lately...maybe fifth time's the charm...?? :)

And who is this Benjamin/BJ person? Did I miss something?

Benjamin "BJ" Clark is re-creating his role in The Brain from LA as Narrator/Professor Leder.  I'm not positive, but I think he and DR Cason are roomies in the sub-let.

DR Matthew - I'll be covering Keyboard 2 (out of two keyboards).  Both books are filled(!) with notes, and a lot of the subs around town are calling them "The Concerto Books", so... It's a big orchestra.  I'm not sure how many pieces, but at least 20 pieces.

*And one thing I haven't mentioned publicly yet - mainly because it's all still speculation - but the Keyboard 2 player is also the Associate Conductor's chair, so...  Just sayin'.  :D

Doesn't that mean that the Associate Conductor plays the keyboard 2 part and when the conductor isn't there, he moves up to conduct the show and a sub comes in to cover his part?  I'm just sayin....  :P

No disrespect taken at all.   I understand where you're coming from for the most part. How do you know the diary room told Jen she could destroy the cigarettes?  Did you see that or did Jen say that?  I haven't liked her from day one.  (No disrespect intended).  She tried more than once to get on this show and this isn't the first time there has been verbal abuse.   She agreed to the slop in order to get the veto and get herself off the block.  Sorry, but she broke the rule that she agreed to or she would have been gone a very long time ago.

She signed up for her 15 minutes of fame and thought the guys would all be in love with her and she would be the "sweetheart" of the house.  At least that's my take on it. She isn't. She should get over it and rather than making everyone hate her, play the stupid game and try to save your butt.

This is a game. It's a game that is and always has been manipulated by the producers. The key to the game is to get the producers to want you to stay in it. There is nothing fair about it and there never has been. I like to watch something interesting and I think the final four of Dick, Danielle, Eric and Jessica would be very interesting.

I'm fine here.  My parents have some water in their basement, actually it could be more now, I haven't checked today and it rained and rained last night. We now have the wettest August on record which follows one of the driest Julys on record. What a mess.  I'm sure it will reek havoc on the crop yields. Neither is good for the corn and beans.

I have been very proud of my old house.  This morning it rained like crazy and other than a couple eaves I needed to unplug, there was no problem with drainage and no leaks.  Amazing.

I guess we just see things totally differently. But i think part of it is that you are basing your opinions on what you are seeing on CBS.  And i am basing my opinions from the feeds.

I don't think that these two things are similar.  And i guess my original point is that i'm really disappointed that the producers have allowed their edit of the show to be totally different than what is really happening.

I believe jen mentioned that she had been allowed to destroy his cigarettes before and that she was told she could do so.  I have no reason not to take her word for it since it was clear that the reason she started eating was because she said she had been lied to.

Quote
She tried more than once to get on this show and this isn't the first time there has been verbal abuse.   She agreed to the slop in order to get the veto and get herself off the block.  Sorry, but she broke the rule that she agreed to or she would have been gone a very long time ago.

Why do you say she has tried to get on the show more than once? I have not read anything like that. In fact she said that she was asked to be on the show.

Yes she agreed to be on slop.  But she broke a rule and accepted the consequences (penalty nom). So i don't see why the others are so outraged.

In fact most of the reason she ate was because of what i wrote above (saying she'd been lied to) plus the fact that dick was abusing her.

re: verbal abuse.  I think it's okay to try to get in people's heads. But i think dick has crossed the line beyond what is acceptable. If you want to bang a pot over someone fine. But don't at the same time say you want to rape and torture that person.

I know most people don't know he did that. But i think the producers should not make him out to be a hero, when he's not.

It's gross and it really bothers me that America is cheering for someone who abuses and threatens a female and gay contestant. It's not right.

I really don't see that at all.  And i don't really get why everyone hates her. I think dick does because she said in the first show that she didn't want his ickness touching her. And that bent him out of shape. And dani doesn't like her because of nick.

But all i've seen is jen being nice to the others. And they (all of them) have been rotten to her.

I just can't understand why they are all cheering on the bully. It's made most of them turn into horrible people.

It might be interesting i guess. Although i really do not want to see a dick and daniele F2. Don't care for her either.

I do find it odd though that they did not try to keep jen in the game. she is the 2nd most popular houseguest after dick. And surely the tension and fighting is good for ratings.

Don't forget, had you ended up staying in the place Yonni had recomended(then screwed up), you would be in this place until Sept. 5th!

DR Jason, if you want to read Miss austen's great literature, I recommend beginning with PRIDE & PREJUDICE: the text sparkles and leaps wittily from phrase to phrase and situation to situation at great speed.  It's perhaps her most accessible and charming work and much more fun than SENSE & SENSIBILITY (the Emma Thompson film's a vast improvement).  After P& P, her masterpiece is PERSUASION, and I cannot recommend it highly enough: mature, melancholic, but she does give her heroine the happy ending she herself did not get if you've seen the film "Becoming Jane."  Miss Austen is to literature what Mozart is to music: a microcosm of the world in a small space covering all humanity within a classical balance of text and poetry.

THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS jumps from farce to mysticism and back; a charming work with one of the greatest fictional characters: Mr Toad of Toad Hall.  How lucky you are to face such great works for the first time!

For a "big orchestra" it sounds amazingly tiny in the house with too many keyboards noodling away for no reason in particular except someone thinks it sounds good.  I didn't.

DR Jennifer -

I think I either read or saw on one of the summary things that Jen had tried to get on before.  I think the biggest turn offs were her shirts with the sayings and wasn't she the one who thought Nick should be in love with her or something like that?

I honestly believe that the people on BB are all trying for their 15 minutes of fame and hoping it will lead to a career.  Goofy idea if you ask me.  Dick and Danielle had both tried to get on before, too, so you have to wonder about the back story of not talking in however many years.  It's all rigged, but I don't think they pretend it isn't.

I think Dick is a welcome relief to the nonsense of the "nice" people winning in past seasons.  It's a cut throat game if it's played right. I want to see cut throat tactics, back dooring, setting people up, lying....yeah baby, that's what this game is about. And this Amber chick has got to go~!

Bush hit over jobs for illegal workers

If President Bush is serious about getting tough on U.S. employers who hire illegal aliens, he can start with his own administration, which employs thousands of unauthorized workers, says the top Republican on the House immigration subcommittee.

A 2006 audit showed federal, state and local governments are among the biggest employers of the half-million persons in the U.S. illegally using "non-work" Social Security numbers — numbers issued legally, but with specific instructions that the holders are not authorized to work in the U.S.

Oh I remember what I was going to post...did anyone record the half dozen or so 1940s Columbia B musicals starring Ann Miller that played yesterday? My DVR picked up about 3 or 4 of them...they look like a lot of fun...lots of big band like Jan Garber, Kay Kyser, and the like are in them, also.

I thought about recording the ones I had never seen, but knowing the number of TV box sets that are going to be coming in during the coming weeks, I knew I'd have no time to watch any of them. So, I'll just have to wait for them to come around again.

Susan's courtship by both Ian and Mike probably turned out to be my favorite storyline of the season. It certainly gave Teri Hatcher something to play other than her usual klutz.

The story of the woman with her dead husband in the freezer was also interesting. All of these stories contributed to these last three episodes being among the best during the third season.

I think Dick would be fine if he had a "match" in the house for his mouth and nasty demeanor.

For me one bully does not entertainment make...especially when the house is full of wusses like Amber and Jameka and ERIC and Jessica and Zach.

Dick has fully supported getting rid of all the guys that have left.  He got rid of Dustin by blaming him for Nick's ouster, which was his (Dick's own) doing.  Mike was blamed by Dick for being the rogue vote for Kail when that was a lie...Dick always has to blame somebody else for something he has no business knowing.  It was Eric, of course, who voted to keep Kail...America's choice and all that lame business.

But Eric, as a player, repulses me as much as anyone who has ever been in the game.  I wanted to like him, but his personality makes my skin crawl.

Yet, there really isn't anyone in the game I care one whit about.  There are just varying degrees of loath.

True.

I'll have more detail in the notes, but the first music rehearsal was really fun - the cast is fast and picked up everything quick as can be and there's quite a bit of new harmonies, since we have really wonderful singers.  We were missing about six people today, but tomorrow we'll have everyone except Fred and Yoni.

Oh, and it turns out I've met our Joyce before - in LA during the run of Ragtime (she covered Evelyn Nesbitt) - I used to go out with the cast quite often.  She's a doll and I think she'll be very good in our little show.  Her name is Amy Bodnar.

After rehearsal, I visited out choreographer and his assistant and they showed me the sketched out Brain Tap and it's faboo - really exciting and fun.  It does require a little restructuring and hopefully elmore and make an adjustment in one part of the orchestration, which I think will only require adding drums where there aren't any.  There's one other little thing for elmore, which is we're adding a one-chorus dance break in All About Men - I'm hoping he can just do a repeat of what's there and let the sax have the tune (or the piano, which is probably easier).

After that, I had a little meeting with our general manager, then I auditioned two more actors, who unfortunately just weren't right for the role.  Interestingly, The Last Starfighter was just wrapping up their auditions, so we shared the room and they saw the two actors for their show, too.  So nice to see Skip, and I met their director, and, of course, the lovely Julie was there, too.

The cast got their scripts today - and I was dismayed to see that the little changes we made to the first General Mills scene, threw off the spacing for the rest of the script.  I thought I'd checked but apparently I hadn't.  When we first began writing this, sending it back and forth, we didn't do the page breaks properly, hence every time we change something it moves everything.  I have to now go in and fix it.

In other news...

Yes, the speculation/possibility regarding my involvement with Mary Poppins has buoyed my spirits the past couple of days.  Again, we haven't really talked about anything concrete, and if anything were to happen, it would probably not be for a couple of months.  But, again, it was just nice to be asked if I was interested.

Ahhhhh, already I'm having separation issues with "The Brain."  Can't wait for tomorrow!
The cast is going to be fantastic - if BK isn't pleased as punch (which I believe he is), then I just don't know what to say.

As he noted, we spent today adding in some harmonies to most of the company numbers, then just to get a jump on tomorrow, Barry Pearl and I stayed and worked on two renditions of "The Plan" and figured out some fun stuff to do with that.

I cannot wait for the read-through tomorrow; most of these people haven't read the scripts and I can't wait to see what their reactions are.

BJ and I are just relaxing here at home base - I got in a short nap and he's been about on the internet for most of the time.  Now, we just wait to meet Senor BK.

I did not notice.
No one else noticed.
No one said anything.

Note: Red Tail Boa's camoflage coloration seems to work!

Actually, several of them were finalists in previous seasons.  Dick has flat-out stated that he and Danielle were finalists for BB6.  Someone else also admitted to having been in the final group of contestants for previous seaons.

Yeah i had heard that about dick and daniele. Which makes it even more absurd that they were surprised to see each othere this season (more so since they both admit seeing each other at the hotel before the series started).

But what i asked about was jen. She said she was asked to me on the show and i did not hear/read anything about her trying out before.

re: big brother

You know it's pretty bad when you're actually cheering for amber to win HOH. :)

I don't know that i would like dick even if there was someone else in there like him.  I mean maybe his rudeness or obnoxiousness would be tolerable.  But still not his threats.

Sorry, but this just really bugs me.  I know most people don't know about his threats and abuse. But when people do know and still like him.  I know it's reality tv.  But it really bothers me.

The Village voice, in its rundown of the Fringe, had this to say about BUKOWSICAL:

And Somewhere Men Are Laughing proved less palatable. Though it had garnered a full production in L.A., Jeff Mandel's script seemed sadly amateurish, if heartfelt. Set in 1950s Brooklyn, it features a Jewish family collapsing even as their beloved Dodgers triumph. Heavy on the exposition, clunky in its tonal shifts, it lasted more than two hours, echoing a character's cry, "Oh, God. Why? Why?" Bukowsical!, another L.A. success, raised similar queries, especially for anyone who's seen the similar Gutenberg! The Musical! Also structured as a backer's audition for "the next great musical experience," Bukowsical! adapts the booze-fueled ramblings of Charles Bukowski. The title number opens: "What's the feeling you get/When you're down on your luck/And you're too drunk to fuck/Bukowsical!" Reasonably clever, but it hits those same crass notes again and again, lending the whole production a tone of unintended alcoholic stupor.

I went on a mini yard work frenzy tonight. Whenever I looked at a couple spots in my yard a little voice in my head would sing "You're entering Grey Gardens"  YIKES!   So, when the rain stopped I went out to pull a few weeds and ended up trimming bushes, pulling weeds and little trees etc.   I have had a sore back and haven't felt well lately, I must say I was over glowing when as I worked. So much so that I drank a big glass of Gatorade when I came in.   I am hoping that the exercise and stretching was good for my back and having a good glow has made me feel better in general

COOL! THE MARY POPPINS SUNDAE AT SERENDIPITY III

Onstage at the New Amsterdam Theatre, "just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down," but offstage, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan at the ice cream specialty shop Serendipity 3, Mary Poppins' sentiment appears to be quite the same—only cooler! To celebrate the Disney hit musical's 300th performance this month, on the morning of Thursday, August 16, several stars of Mary Poppins, including the talented title role play Ashley Brown herself, headed up to Serendipity 3 on East 60th Street to sample their newest creation, "The Supercalifragilisticexplialidocious Sundae." The mix of strawberry ice cream, cheese cake, fresh strawberries, whipped cream and caramel sauce (topped with a chocolate wafer chim-chimney and one pert black umbrella) was a huge hit with the kids. And Ms. Brown. For a look at the deliciousness of it all, click on.

Actually, I would recommend The World According to Garp (John Irving)

PS To all my HHW fans - please note, I did not say Atlas Shrugged - that's next!

A colostomy is what you could end up with if you don’t have a colonoscopy!

I would rather read ATLAS SHRUGGED then GARP.

Dear Jane:

Have you been talking to my Doc?

I got a big lecture on getting a colonoscopy today - he even stooped to the "A Man Of Your Inteligence" argument.

der Brucer

LOL-I should have read this before I posted.

Did you finally listen to him!!!!!!!!!!

But are there any videos of DD Sherlock as Rathbone?

Give a dog a (Rath)Bone!

My sweet little boy was just resting his head on my arm and giving me ear kisses & nose blows (he gently blows on my face).

I don't know if I've mentioned how much I love the doc Sacco and Vanzetti.

Thank you so much, Cillaliz!

And (most of) the critics agree:

"Peter Miller's labor-of-love docu does a superb job of condensing an overwhelming mass of documentation, archival imagery and artistic representation into a concise yet passionate history lesson whose relevance could not be timelier." - Variety

"The case of two Italian-born anarchists, executed for a murder they almost surely didn't commit, remains the definitive, scary myth of the promise of America snuffed by fear and loathing. It's cleansing to see the facts laid out with intimacy and rigor, and the film earns the comparison it makes to the squelching of due process for some of today's terror suspects. The difference is that Americans during the '20s took to the streets to protest the railroading of two innocent men. Would that happen now?" - Entertainment Weekly (grade "A")

"Absolutely engrossing. This riveting new film by director Miller masterfully revives the past. Miller's obvious passion and dedication shine throughout." - Chicago Tribune

“Excellent…this compelling and powerful production can serve as a graceful elegy to the doomed men who were murdered by their adopted homeland.” -Film Threat

“Packed with information…It scarcely needs to be said how much this case has to do with contempt for foreigners, legal injustice, and xenophobic terror.” -Village Voice

“Talking heads ranging from Arlo Guthrie to Howard Zinn, eloquent paintings by Ben Shahn, and archival film footage bolster the film's airtight case against the prosecutors, making them seem persecutors, shaming the America they claimed to be defending. SACCO AND VANZETTI is trenchant, impassioned advocacy.” – AM New York

"Peter Miller sets out to show that the infamous murder trial of Sacco and Vanzetti was one of the most alarming and shameful incidents of social and political injustice in America’s history, and he succeeds admirably. SACCO AND VANZETTI should be requisite viewing anyone who might be unfamiliar with the case and its place in American history." – New York Press

"A wonderful film, as timeless as the struggle for human justice, as relevant as today's headlines." – Ken Burns

"Miller realizes that the political passions fueled by Sacco and Vanzetti in the 1920s are supremely pertinent to our own era's democratic crises. Anti-immigrant paranoia, threats to civil liberties, and rigged courtrooms are far from new. The film reminds a new generation that these inequities became catalysts for an international mass movement in the early part of the twentieth century." – Cineaste

"Essential and disturbingly of-the-moment. A passionate and moving case for the men's innocence and inspiring dignity." – Newsday

“It shocks in two ways: it shows us how recently, relatively speaking, racial and political prejudices were openly allowed to smirch justice, and it makes us take a look at the vitality of liberalism today...Peter Miller brings into new being a story that it is still healthfully discomfiting to remember.” – The New Republic

“Miller makes his film soar by keeping our attention focused on the defendants. For Sacco and Vanzetti were extraordinary men. Sacco and Vanzetti ... force us to recommit ourselves to the struggle for human liberation. For if their agony was their triumph, it can and must be ours as well. SACCO AND VANZETTI is a must see.” – Monthly Review

"Masterfully recreating the era in which the "crime" and trial took place, while at the same time showing parallels to our current milieu, Sacco and Vanzetti is a thought-provoking and surprisingly emotional experience." - Jeffrey Kauffman, DVD Talk

"it wasn't as painful as a colostomy."  - der Brucer

Oh my, pet stories.  I will try to keep this short.

Gaia, first cat in my first apartment, was such a sweet soul.  It was amazing what she put up with from children, dogs & other cats.  Gaia would walk with me to the corner market & wait outside while I did my shopping & then walk home with me.

When the boys were babies & cried MySin, a short haired tuxedo cat, always got to them before I did.  When the boys were older she protected them when their mother got angry at them. ;D

And then there was Echo, who searched & found my cell phone when I lost it in the fields behind our house.  All I said was “Echo, pick up” and off she went until she found it.

Question for Matt H:

We own no DVDs of Rathbone as Sherlock.

You have been commenting on same.

Is it the 2006 4 disk Box set of 14 films and do you recommend it?

der Brucer

That is the most recent release. I bought them when they were issued in four waves: three boxes of four films each and then the two Fox features made in 1939 as separate issues.

This 2006 box puts them all in one place with a few extra commentaries that weren't part of the ones I bought. I believe the transfers are all the same as the ones I have: they are superb considering the abysmal condition the films were in when UCLA got them. Several look like brand new films, and since I love these more than any other series films ever made, I couldn't have expected them to ever look as good as these look. I feel so lucky to have them.

High recommended!

I began my evening by finishing the three remaining episodes of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES which were in the box. I enjoyed seeing them all again, and the weddings which ended the season were very different and very surprising. And some neat cliffhangers, so we'll see what September brings us when the show returns.

I then watched all the bonus features on the last disc in the set. None were especially illuminating and that includes the deleted scenes and the bloopers.

One bonus section was here producer Marc Cherry picked his six favorite scenes from the season. He and I certainly agreed on one thing: the best episode of the season - "Bang" about the kilings/hostage situation at the grocery store.

Next, I put in the first disc of HEROES and watched the first episode and half of the second one. I REALLY enjoyed the opening episode since now all the names and faces are so familiar and things tie together so much more than they did when I watched the episodes for the first (and only) time.

It looks like there will be deleted scenes with every episode. After I watched the first episode, I watched the deleted scenes that went with the episode. I can see why they were deleted. Too many new characters introduced that would have made the first show just too crammed with people and events.

There is also on the first disc the unaired original pilot of the show which I'l also look forward to watching. I will probably wait until I've watched the entire series again before I go back and watch it.

DR JRand - Glad to know your "present" arrived safe and sound.  And, of course, as soon as I sealed the envelope, I realized I had not put my note in there with the Playbills, so...  In any case...

I thought it was appropriate to have one of Michael Bennett's original assistants - and one of the original dance captains - of ACL sign the Playbill along with the current resident dance captain.

DR Cillaliz - It sounds like you just had a "good sweat" and a cool-down.  Sometimes the body will do that if you've been "exerting".  Just means your system wanted to keep "glowing" to "refresh" itself.
