Title: THAI GEFILTE FISH

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were especially Thai, and now it is time for you to post until the Thai cows come home.  They're currently having some Moo Krob.

Topic of the Day:  The worst production of a show that I've ever seen was a local production of Little Shop of Horrors.  I've posted about it before, so I won't go into it.  Just know that it was bad...very, very bad. :P

I can't think of any plays that have been bad and I can't think of any specific shows where the show itself was bad and not necessarily the production.

One of the worst things I've ever seen was TUSK: A MUSICAL, as part of the very first NYMF. The story revolved around a family of elephants (played, of course, by humans, employing color-blind casting) who are captured and sent to the circus and are tortured by a drunk ringmaster, played by Jeb Brown, who later went on to star in one of the other worst things I've ever seen...RING OF FIRE on the Broad Way. He's now in GREASE! Enough said.

Anyway, during TUSK: THE MUSICAL, the drunk, 40-something has a scene/song where he's boozing up and getting angry and violent. He decides to take out his aggression on the baby elephant - played by a young African American girl. As he has hovering above the cowering little African American girl-elephant, with a bottle of whiskey in one hand and a whip - yes, a WHIP - in the other, I began to wonder if it was the absolute worst thing I'd ever seen or if it was some stroke of genius that I was just too dumb to recognize. Now I'm pretty sure it was the worst thing I've ever seen.

On Broadway, I've seen a few clunkers, too... SUZANNE SOMERS: THE BLONDE IN THE THUNDERBIRD comes immediately to mind, as do GOOD VIBRATIONS and RING OF FIRE. And DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES, though I did love it in a twisted way. And then there were IN MY LIFE and THE TIMES, THEY ARE A-CHANGIN'... Oh! And HOT FEET: THE MUSICAL THAT DANCES TO THE TUNE OF EARTH, WIND AND FIRE.

As for the Topic of the Day...

Well, to quote a quote used in a show I recently saw: "Val Kilmer Is Moses."  The Ten Commandments is certainly one of the worst pieces of a long form music video and fashion show masquerading as a "musical".

I've also seen Shogun (at the Kennedy Center)... the first American version of Fame: The Musical...  And In My Life... All of which would have required a total overhaul to be "fixed".

...And once I'm not so sleepy - after I wake up "tomorrow" - I shall post some more shows and some more thoughts.  Maybe so, maybe not.

I also saw a show - DOGMUSIC, it was called - which was part of another festival of some sort, which involved humans playing dogs that had been sent to the pound. It starred BAT BOY's Deven May and Kay Walbye, who gave the best performance out of the lot. I've never been more embarrassed for a group of actors in my whole life than I was for these people, which is saying a lot as I did POOP: THE MUSICAL!...several times.

TOD:

Local production of Romeo and Juliet was the worst massacre of the bard's work. However, the worst musical was something a person wrote for a town's centennial celebration.. It was BAD!!! The lyrics were bad and the singers were tone deaf

Last night I had a pleasant surprise when I went to see Jeff Harnar in concert. He told me that Alex Rybeck wouldn't be with him this time aroumd and that he was using three local musicians.
Well I was surpised when the piano player was introduced as LANNY MYERS. Mr. Myers has worked with BK on over a dozwn albums including

Real Imagination
Toonful
Toonful, Too
Michelle Nicastro: On My Own
Sax and Violence
Ennio Morrocone
Sherlock Holmes (With Larry Moore)
Unsung Irving Berlin (With Larry Moore)
A Broadway Chrsitmas (With Larry Moore)
Burt Bacharach Album (With Larry Moore & Others)
A Hollywood Christmas
The Paul Simon Album
Unsung Musicals 2
Unsung Musicals 3

and also on
Lost In Boston 3 (The Bee)
Sondheim At The Movies (Sooner or Later)
Primetime Musicals (You're So Right For Me, Man Wanted )

Got to chat with him a bit after the show. He insisted that we met in LA and I am quite sure that we never met.

A very nice gentlemen.

The usual suspects:
"RENT" - no-one could actually hear the lyrics so why would you care. The use of those Headsets took away any sense of the show being anything you cared about!
"THE WOMAN IN WHITE" - it cried out as something that had no reason to be musicalised. No character needed to sing anything and musically it just sounded dreary.
"HIGH SOCIETY" What works on film does not stage. It is just dull.
"BLOOD BROTHERS" - I felt for no-one! You already know where it is heading and I thought the journey was so totally tedious.
"J C SUPERSTAR" - all staging and no heart! "GODSPELL" had HEART.
"THE CARD" - (1973 version) - All the Dance numbers looked the same!
Jim Dale was fine. I still quite often play the score. I think the staging of the show let it down badly. I wanted to like it much more.
"THE BEAUTIFUL GAME". It could have had emotional impact but Ben Elton's lyrics were poor.
"ASPECTS OF LOVE" - a seedy attempt at "A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC" that went awry. The story is unpleasant as are the characters.

The only show I've ever walked out of was DEMOCRACY on Broadway. I don't really know if it was the show or my exhaustion that led me to leave at intermission, but in any case, I couldn't stand it any longer.

TOD:

I have mentioned this before STREETHEAT with Glen Scarpelli and Vicki Lewis. I left at the interval.

Two plays that I slept through no matter how hard I tried to stay up.  GOOD and HURLYBURLY (The original broadway production)

A local production of THE COOCKTAIL PARTY spoken in prose rather than verse. Also the actor playing the butler kept on pronouncing the name of one the characters ChamberLANE rather than ChamberLYNN. It was like nails on a chalk board. Ans to top it off  the actor was one of my best friends back then

And The Visit wrritten by Friedrich Duerrenmatt as performed by grade 8 students. Words describe how wrong they were for this play.

I want to add a third bus and truck company that came to Montreal with The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas. They didn't even use the same set or an approximation of it.  Just a series of platforms on different levels spread the stage. The show wasn't bad, but the acting and the production values were.

J & H was indeed totally laughable.

My favourite laughter piece was the "Murder Murder" scene.
When I did get to see the show staged (and well), it still is a load of... as was (and is) the Pimpernel.

Big Ballad after Big emotional Ballad after another Big
Ballad.  None of the songs does much to advance the story line, nor to add character or emotional depth

Then one can say the very same of Webber's Phantom which J & H tried to emulate, I think! And it pleases the crowds; so, what is there to understand!

I thought that the book of High Society is based on a play! How come it does not work on stage as a musical?!

You see, contrary to most of you who see lots of live shows, I seldom get to go to a "live" musical, so when I do, I am grateful and appreciative and try not to be too critical! It is so rare to get musicals on stage in Paris!

Oh btw, you all will be thrilled to know that the French CABARET is coming bakc next month, with a new cast, I believe!

AND I still have to see it!

Here I thought there would be a lot of musicals in France?

WE dont get a lot in ND either. We have to travel to the Twin Cities or Winnepeg to see shows. Occaissionally shows do come to Fargo or one of the colleges or high schools do musicals.

I have to leave the worst presentations to some of teh schools in the rural areas. Some are BAD! Granted they have to work with what they have but some of the production values are horrendous.

A small town high school did a rendition of Grease and they were off key and I there timing was dismal.

I suspect that the crowds are more pleased with the staging of Phantom than anything else. It is odd that it works as you can't really feel sympathy for its characters.  For me it was an enjoyable experience to see the show - despite its flaws.  I can't say the same about Pimpernel and J & H. As I usually see non-professional productions, I do try to be postive about them.

I like "Chess" a lot - but the professional production staged here and in NZ was so bad!

I wanted Woman in White to be great. I wanted The Beautiful Game to be more than it was.

What do I know? I loved the "dark" version of "Follies" and so many people love to loath it!

POTO is an interesting show - I, too, really enjoyed it on a staging, sets, and costumes level, and I must say I really like some of its score.  But, Raoul is such a cardboard character, and Prince directed Christine (at least the one I saw) to be so melodramatic that I kept being taken out of being involved - that said, I though Crawford was terrific and made the most of his eighteen minutes on stage.

Good morning, all! I will shortly be off to Toyland.  I was going to try for the matinee of Merrill's women-in-prison this afternoon, but I've run out of one of my medications and need to hit my pharmacy on the trek back from Toyland this afternoon. After two Fringe disasters, I'm not ready for a third, so bring on the drugs.

I have nothing else to report. So let's jump to the TOD:

CARRIE: I know there are folk who claim the score is great, but the production was so awesomely inept in every department that it's hard to tell. I only remember how god-awful it was.

THE NEWS: a disaster about a divorced New York reporter, his neglected daughter and a serial killer.  It might have worked on LAW & ORDER but it was a pathetic excuse for a punk rock musical.  At intermission, Dona D Vaughn, Mrs Ron Raines, turned to me and said "I wish he'd kill the audience and put us out of our misery."

MICE IN THE THEATRE at the Sheridan Square Actor's Theatre: if you're going to bill your play as a comedy, give them at least one intentional laugh.

JELLY'S LAST JAM: it may have run because of Greg Hines, but it was sure a mess as a book and a sensible piece of musical theatre.  At intermission Dona D Vaughn - with whom I see only a classy show - turned to me and said, "Do you have any idea what this is about?"

Strange.  The casting director had apparently heard from an offeree's agent that the actor needed until Monday at noon  to decide on our offer.  But we knew the actor was really interested in doing the show, and asked the actor (since he just happens to live in our building) if a job had come up or something.  But, also apparently, the actor had told his agent to accept (did this as soon as he got the call from his agent), and didn't need until Monday to decide.  Sure, there's protocol, but it can be damaging - had we not known the offeree, we would have thought he was posturing by saying "well, i need the weekend to decide" (that's what was on the status sheet sent to us by the casting director) and been unsure all weekend as to whether we had to continue looking for that role.

Protocologist - that's going to be my profession in my next life.  It seems like it should be quit lucrative.

I think the worst professional musical I ever saw was Roza.

Most of it is a haze, but I remember particularly a "Seance" production number in Act II after which I wondered "What on earth was Hal Prince thinking?"

I also remember that the set really worked against the show: there was this little rinky stairway stage right which connected to a little catwalk that ran around the entire back set wall.  And all the entrances and exits had to occur via this catwalk.  It was annoying as hell and very distracting.

The costumes and sets for the original Broadway production of Merrily were similarly ugly and annoying.

Fondest Greetings to you all!  (A line from POTO)

I hope that all is going well for you.  Just wanted to pop in and let you know that I'm still kicking.  Some days better then others but I'm here.

I had my 2nd sleep study done with the machine and it was wonderful.  No problems at all.

I've been waiting to get my own machine but have had to wait for insurance glitches.  I got a call that said they would deliver it on Friday (yesterday).  Then I got a call back saying they had some kind of problem and it wouldn't be until Monday.  Sigh.

I think the lack of good sleep is 99% of all of my problems.

I even almost messed up big time because my boss gave me some important paperwork to make copies of and take down to HR.  Well, I was so tired, I didn't get around to making the copies and I put the paperwork someplace "safe" so it wouldn't be laying around on my desk (this was last Friday BTW).  I totally forgot about it until yesterday.   :-[ :-\  I felt so bad about it.

I wish I could be in NY with you all right now.  I could use some vacation.  My time is slowly building up.  I have 3 days of vacation on the books--not that I could afford to go even if I had the time.  Another life change I have to get used to.  I don't quite have the spending money that I used to.

I will look forward to hearing all about your adventures and I want lots and lots of pictures!

When I do get everything done it will be so much nicer.  Instead of this old computer cart, I will have a nice desk that I can sit at and be comfortable.

I've hated how I have to hunch over the keyboard to type.  I bought a special keyboard platform like I have at work that I can pull out and adjust to whatever height I need it be.

I'll be in high cotton when it's all done.  :)

I have that short problem as well.  That's part of the computer cart problem.  When I adjust my chair so it's high enough to be comfortable to type, my feet dangle with no place to put them.

When I put the chair down so I can touch the ground, I have to hunch over the keyboard--and there's no place to put my feet because the cart is right there in front of me.

My Dear Wife is not a computer desk you have to assemble.  There should be no confusion about this.

Peter Link’s The River is the worst musical I can recall.  Religious texts, no structure, no dialogue, no story, no characters, an abstract set.  Need I say more?

The River was worse, I felt, than my previous least favorite, The 1940s Radio Hour.  Today, I’d probably find merit in it.  But in those days, I was appalled by the idea that people thought they could build a musical out of pre-existing hit songs from an earlier decade.  All narrative theatre is about story-telling.  When you exclude songwriters from the process, your story-telling is bound to suffer.  Looking at other DRs worst-ever choices, I see many where the songwriters were uninvolved or six feet under.

Finally met my musical director yesterday (he’d been M.D.-ing at the Muni) and found him charming, polite, on the quiet side, and my age.  Hard to believe rehearsals are 12 days away.  Glad to see they're underway on the now completely-cast Brain From Planet X.

I've seen a lot of worsts in my life on stage, backstage, and in the audience:

Worst Broadway show - I HAD A BALL. I've talked about this before, but as a teen who liked mostly everything I saw, this was just the pits. SO disappointing considering the cast.

(Runner-up would have to be HIGH SOCIETY which was a superb community theater show charging Broadway prices and with Broadway talent in the leads.)

Worst community theater production with me as an audience member:

CAROUSEL. The Billy couldn't sustain a single note of the score and was very effete. Not what you want for Billy.

Neither Carrie nor Mr. Snow could sing at all.

The sets were only semi-finished and backdrop was only half-painted (This was a week INTO the run!)

The Snow children all dropped character, stared out at the audience and waved, laughed, got left behind when the line moved, etc.

The dancing was the worst I've ever seen - excrusiatingly bad from the opening pantomime on. Horrific.

The accompaniment was only a piano!

DITTO!  Gotta love short people!

"They got tiny little hands
Little eyes ..
And tiny little teeth
They wear platform shoes
On their nasty little feet ...

They got little baby legs
That stand so low
You got to pick'em up
Just to say hello
They got little cars
That go beep, beep, beep
They got little vocies
Goin' peep, peep, peep
And dirty little minds ..."

One of my favorite Randy Newman songs -- makes me laugh when I sing along to it ...

Worst community theater production with me as part of the crew:

DEATHTRAP (I ran sound).

The audience roared with laughter at the BIG fright moment and subsequent heart attack. Neither of the two male leads could act, and one was openly homophobic which seriously undermined the relationship of the two men. All staging around their surprise was blocked with distance between them.

The actress playing the psychic was lovely German lady with an accent so thick you couldn't understand a word she said.

Worst production with me as a part of the cast:

ARSENIC AND OLD LACE (I played Sgt. O'Hara).

Leading man couldn't remember any lines. The two elderly ladies couldn't remember lines or blocking. The actors playing the rogues mugged and stretched their business to try to steal the show which wasn't hard to do with such an inept lead.

Big problems with
No place to put
Their dangling little toes
Their tiny hunchy bodies
Crouching down in those
Little computer chairs
That are parked so low
You can barely hear
Their squeaky little voices going
Eek, Eek, Eek
As you trip all over
Their nasty little feet."

I'm not scheduled to work today, but I have been thinking of sitting in the pit again this afternoon at Mary Poppins.  However, I'm not sure I really want to spend my afternoon sitting in the pit of Mary Poppins.  ;)

Tonight, I'm attending a "cocktail reception" that some friends of mine are holding in honor of their son's one-year old birthday.

So...  I just checked the weather for today, and it seems we're under a Heat Advisory today since the temps will be in the 90s - which according the advisory would put us in "record territory".  Really? 90 degree temps in August would be in record territory?  Hmm...  I would think record territory would be somewhere in the low 100s.

Hmm.. So maybe sitting in air-conditioned theatre this afternoon wouldn't be such a bad thing after all.  We shall see.

The worst show I ever saw was at the Cort Theater in NYC and it starred Al Pacino.  The playwright wasn't exactly chopped liver, either:  William Shakespeare!  But, boy, oh, boy was it W-R-O-N-G!  Pacino as King Richard III.  (Checking on the Broadway database, it seems that this production only ran 33 performances).

Any other DRs feeling a little overwhelmed?  There's too much out there; you just have to resign yourself to the idea that you can't do it all.  Too many places to visit, foods to try, books to read, movies & television shows to watch, shows to see, CDs to listen to, people to get to know.  Amongst other things.

In a way, this site is nice because I get to experience a little bit of some of the things I'm missing, and I can follow up on others that I think might be worthwhile.

So, thanks to everyone for everything they bring to the table here - including themselves!

Last summer, the DP and I heard a reading of a new musical called Ball and Chain - basically a lesbian adventure that takes place in a bar called "Ball and Chain".  This is 3 1/2 hours of our life that we can't get back and we frequently remind each other of that.  Dreadful isn't even a start here....

I never understood the appeal of that cartoon cat.

Both Buster and Mikey are shedding their undercoats.  I find myself reaching over and pulling out tufts of buttfluff.  The stuff is amazingly soft.

Mikey never had this shedding problem until we moved here to Delaware.  It must have something to do with the climate.

Overwhelmed? Oh, yes. Often. And for a long time now. I've found that I prefer to miss many TV shows when they first air, then selectively watch them on DVD--far more convenient. I'm not "in the know" from the start, but it just works out better for me. I'm often looking for things to eliminate, to not bother with, because there simply isn't time. And, frankly, so much of the mainstream culture consists of stuff that never did interest me.

The recommendations for CDs and films and such that I see here on HHW I take seriously because they're simply of a higher caliber than most recommendations, in my view, and there are some things that I DON'T want to miss.

Now, if we just had a 48-hour day...

RENT - One man's opinion (and I saw the entire original cast).

PERFECT CRIME - I can't believe that Catherine Russell is still in that show.  Can't she get another job?  Is she a silent partner?

JEKYLL & HYDE - I really wanted to like this show, since so many of my friends loved it.  But "Murder, Murder"  sealed the deal.

I am sure I can think of more.

From an 2001 Playbill article which I think answers your question

A Perfect Crime's star and general manager Catherine Russell, who has spent half of her life since 21 in the show. Crime's mainstay from the April 18, 1987 opening onward, Russell has missed only four performances in 15 years

PS She also tears the tickets.

It was obviously way ahead of it's time. ;)

I was in a local prodction about 15 years ago and another local theater group is going to do it this December.  I have a season ticket, so I'll definitely see it.  But I've auditioned for the group, so it's possible (highly improbable, though) that I may actually be in it...but I'm not holding my breath. :P

Good Afternoon!

Well... Since the A Train seemed to be running "local" and "express" this weekend - despite what all the signage in the stations said - I didn't make it to the theatre on time.  My train ran express for the first set of stops, then went local, then stopped altogether for about 20 minutes.  By the time I made it to the stage door of the New Amsterdam, it was already 2:05 - a.k.a. "downbeat".  So...

I guess I really wasn't meant to attend the matinee today after all.  ;)

This made my think of something I ran across today while purging files from the filing cabinet. (It was filed under cooking!) A parody song one of the puppeteers wrote for a show Greg worked on. As Jason can probably attest, puppeteers are a sick lot!

BOILING CATS AND DOGS (to the tune of "If I Only Had A Brain")

Oh, when hunger makes you stumble
And your stmoach starts to rumble
Just boil some cats and dogs.
Yes, it's extraordinary
(Though it does get kind of hairy)
When you're boiling cats and dogs.

No, there's nothing like some poodles
Stewed up with lots of noodles
Or a steaming mug of pug.
And what diner could be crabby
Eating heaping plates of tabby
After boiling cats and dogs?

Oh gee,
The recipe
Enough for you and me!
And if finding extra portions gets too hard,
Grab something else, from someone's yard!

Try some melon wiht some collie
It'll make you shout "By Golly!"
But it's cat that is low-fat.
You'll reduce all the excess popu-
lation we won't stop you
When you're boiling cats and dogs.

And for Chinese by the platter,
If dark meat doesn't matter,
Try tongue of chow-chow mein.
Though it's better when stir-fyin'
You can really get fur flyin'
When you're boiling cats and dogs.

Just go shopping at the kennel
Get some garlic and some fennel
It's labrador for four!
And the time you'll be savin'
When you start microwavin'
'Stead of boiling cats and dogs!

Though it's really quite delicious...
No one's left to lick the dishes
After boiling cats and dogs!

And here I am, posting from the new digs, which are, in a word, FABOO!  A studio that feels like a studio - everything new and shiny with a GREAT river view from the 32nd floor.  The guy who's subletting is a terrific guy, a producer.  I'm near the jogging path at the West Side Highway, so I may partake of that tomorrow morning.  There's a real bed and a nice, big bathroom, a small but clean and nice kitchen, closet space, a big desk for my computer, a plasma TV and at least I shall be very comfortable for the next five weeks.  24 hour doorman, too.

What ever happened to "suffering for your art"?

I watched another HEROES episode. This was the one that went back six months in time and caught us up with all the protagonists. It was our first view of Sylar when he first got the idea for his mad scheme to make himself special.

Yes, according to VARIETY, MAD MEN does draw a larger audience than REMEMBER WENN did in its heyday.

I'm sure that is only due to lack of advertising for WENN.

I'm sure that is only due to lack of advertising for WENN.

I'm guessing that the audience for cable has expanded greatly since the years of REMEMBER WENN. A lot more people now have access to channels they didn't have access to then.

WHAT a difference from the last place!  The last place was, of course, much cheaper, but what a dump it was - ugly, uncomfortable and smelly.

bk - sometimes you can't put a price on comfort and if you're going to be there for a while, might as well be comfortable.  Have a nice time in your home away from home.

Continuing "BRAIN" vibes..... to cast, crew and creatives!

I've seen a lot of bad productions of stuff, but to answer what would be the worst musical and play I've ever seen they would be as follows, (there may have been worse, but memory has kindly blotted them from my mind):

PLAY:  JACK (I think that was its name), a one-man atrocity committed by Nicol Williamson playing John Barrymore at the Geffen Playhouse.  Tripe, tritely written and inadequately performed by Williamson. One of the most masturbatory, self-indulgent, sloppy exhibitions I've ever seen.  Mr. Williamson's contempt for his audience was manifestly reflected in his slipshod, "don't-give-a shit" performance.  I think I've ranted on this before.  A disservice to the memory of John Barrymore.

As far as musicals go, though I saw it on cable and not in the theatre...the David Hasselhoff JEKYLL/HYDE was one throbbing embarrassment.  Bad play, bad performances, rotten music and lyrics.

I also saw the premiere of A DOLL'S LIFE, at the Ahmanson, the story of Nora after she closed the door in Ibsen's A DOLL'S HOUSE.  I remember it as being pretty inervating.

Put that on a mix with "Dead Puppies Aren't Much Fun"!

Does anyone know of a vocal recording of the song Brazil?

The song has been successful through the years and has been played in many different styles, from a cappella to Orchestral arrangements. It has been covered by many artists, including João Gilberto, Gal Costa, The Coasters, Chick Corea, Juan García Esquivel, Xavier Cugat, Carlos Barbosa-Lima, Chet Atkins, Django Reinhardt, The Von Trolley Quartet, Chris de Burgh, Frank Sinatra, Toquinho, Tom Jobim, Kate Bush (for Brazil, though the main title version of the song was performed by Geoff Muldaur) Arcade Fire, Cornelius, The Vengaboys, Johnny Mathis, Rosa Passos, Pink Martini, Guster and Beirut (band). The Ritchie Family recorded a vaguely related version in the age of disco; the core tune is partially preserved, but the lyrics are completely different.

Aquarela do Brasil
Ary Barroso (1939)
(traditional version)

Brasil
Meu Brasil brasileiro
Meu mulato inzoneiro
Vou cantar-te nos meus versos
Ô Brasil, samba que dá
Bamboleio, que faz gingá
Ô Brasil do meu amor
Terra de Nosso Senhor
Brasil! Brasil!
Prá mim... prá mim...

Ô, abre a cortina do passado
Tira a Mãe Preta do serrado
Bota o Rei Congo no congado
Brasil! Brasil!
Deixa cantar de novo o trovador
À merencória luz da lua
Toda canção do meu amor
Quero ver a “Sá Dona” caminhando
Pelos salões arrastando
O seu vestido rendado
Brasil! Brasil!
Prá mim... prá mim...

Brasil
terra boa e gostosa
Da morena sestrosa
De olhar indiscreto
Ô Brasil, verde que dá
Para o mundo se admirá
Ô Brasil do meu amor
Terra de Nosso Senhor
Brasil! Brasil!
Prá mim... prá mim...

Ô, esse coqueiro que dá côco
Oi, onde amarro a minha rêde
Nas noites claras de luar
Brasil! Brasil!
Ah, ouve essas fontes murmurantes
Aonde eu mato a minha sede
E onde a lua vem brincá
Ah, este Brasil lindo e trigueiro
É o meu Brasil brasileiro
Terra de samba e pandeiro
Brasil! Brasil!
Prá mim... prá mim...

I may switch over to MONK tonight to cap off the evening.

Which I bet you'll enjoy - the Capt and Randy get a chance to off-load MONK of some of the schtick!

DR Jose, re: your Big Brother question.

Sorry i have not read if anyone else has responded. But i assume you are talking about Eric under the sheets?

I wonder why CBS had that removed from youtube.  You would think that anything shown on the feeds would be fair game.  Frankly (and i did not see the youtube video, although i did read about it) i would think it would be more damaging to CBS to allow footage of Dick sexually threatening people. But that's just me.

So how did you find out the vids had been removed?

I also saw the premiere of A DOLL'S LIFE, at the Ahmanson, the story of Nora after she closed the door in Ibsen's A DOLL'S HOUSE.  I remember it as being pretty inervating.

But it did have our own Penny O trying to save the day.

The dog is beautiful, but the more I see the photo of that guy the less I like him.  Sorry.  I tried not to comment but he just keeps popping back up. ;D

Just think of this the next time he pops up:

SAVE SOVIET JEWRY

(after all, he was born in Russia, educated in Berlin, worked in Paris and is definitely not a Gentile).

DR François - So, just how many of those recordings do you have?

This is NOT a list of my collection!

It's my answer to DR JMK's request!

I do have a few! Actually.... before coming to work today, I listened to the Percy Faith version 1962 and I am disappointed in it!

I like the Disney one very much! In "Spanish" and in English...

Erich Kunzel & the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra's version is much better than Faith's!

Brazil, where hearts were entertaining June
We stood beneath an amber moon
And softly murmured "Someday soon"
We kissed and clung together

Then, tomorrow was another day
The morning found me miles away
With still a million things to say
Now, when twilight dims the sky above
Recalling thrills of our love
There's one thing I'm certain of
Return I will to old Brazil

Then, tomorrow was another day
The morning found me miles away
With still a million things to say
Now, when twilight dims the sky above
Recalling thrills of our love

That old Brazil
Man, it's old in Brazil
Brazil, Brazil

I will be out of here in a few moments to attend THE FANTASTICKS with goddaughter Charlotte.  She has a crush on Mr Nick Spangler, the actor currently playing Matt, and after the show we will say hello to him and Tom Jones, if he's playing Henry tonight.  On Monday morning, she, Ron and Dona drive (!!!) to Ann Arbor where she will begin her freshman year as a theatre major.

I did get a phone call this afternoon from Mr Rodney Gilfry, and I will have dinner with him and his lovely daughter Carin tomorrow night.  She becomes a Juilliard student this week.

OK.. Time to head out.

FOODBLOG (http://www.aolfoodblog.com/2007/05/30/smokin-cherry/)

Quote
Hickory Smoked Cherry Limeade

Juice of 2 dozen limes
1 1/2 cups simple syrup (more or less to taste)
2 cups water (more or less to taste)

Stir these together in a large pitcher with 2-3 handfuls of smoked cherries.

Hickory Smoked Cherry & Bourbon Lemonade

2 quarts lemonade (fresh or from concentrate)
1 cup triple sec or orange curacao
2-3 cups bourbon (to taste)
1 cup smoked cherries

Pour over ice. For a lighter drink, top with seltzer.

So how do you happen to come upon smoked cherries? Prolly not in your local 7-11. Seeing as I was spending 8-ish hours smoking brisket, I figured I might as well put the top racks to use. Took a couple of foil baking pans, and laid in a layer of fresh cherries in each. Two hours in the low, steady lump charcoal heat, suffused with the heady smoke of beer-soaked hickory chips left the cherries with unbelievably rich, mellow, sweet-smoked flavor. Seeing our guests repeatedly sidling over to the bowl with the extras, and plucking them from their cocktails to savor on their own makes me think I've stumbled upon something pretty distinctive. I've a notion there will be a goodly bit more experimentation as long as they're in season.

Oh - and I also tossed in a foil pan of kosher salt for about 6 hours. That smoked salt will add some delicious wood-char undertones to my next batch of . But that's a whooole other post.

Guess Miss Karen will be first in line for the margaritas!

The Phantom of the Opera

Jim Murphy, Reviewer
July 30, 2007

Phantom is a show for good singing, and Anthony Warlow is wonderfully supported by gifted coloratura Ana Marina.

Location
    Princess Theatre
Address
    163 Spring St, Melbourne
    Australia
Date
    19 July 2007 to 15 November 2007
Phone Bookings

When the curtain is held for 15 minutes and the director steps on stage to apologise for the virus that has afflicted the star and others in the company, a first-night audience is entitled to be apprehensive. It need not have worried.

Anthony Warlow and the splendid cast assembled for this revival, on the same stage first stalked by Warlow's Phantom 17 years ago, certainly "gave it a go", as director Arthur Masella promised they would.

Warlow had a slight dropout on one sustained note and opted for one alternative note, but otherwise there was no cause for disappointment. His exquisite falsetto in The Music of the Night was as enthralling as ever, and his strength and power when the Phantom gives vent to anger and passion was as majestic.

Warlow plays the Gothic romantic melodrama to the hilt as the disfigured composer who lurks in the bowels of the Paris Opera House.

Svengali-like, he champions the career of young singer Christine Daae, with whom, Beauty and the Beast-like, he falls in love.

Phantom is a show for good singing, and Warlow is wonderfully supported by gifted coloratura Ana Marina, dainty and vivacious as Christine, and John Bowles, who acts and sings the role of Raoul, Christine's childhood friend and suitor, with buckets of charm.

The vocal work of these three is a treat.

Good singing in a rarer discipline comes from Andrea Creighton and David Rogers-Smith, amusingly over the top as the opera's underwhelming stars, Madame Carlotta and Signor Piangi.

John O'May and Derek Taylor are excellent light relief as the new managers of the opera house, and Jackie Rees is a forbidding presence as the ballet mistress, Madame Giry.

Whatever its merits as words and music, The Phantom of the Opera is the most sumptuous theatrical spectacle. When Harold Prince directed it in London back in 1986, he gave it the full treatment.

There was no stinting on scenery and costumes, so the customers could see how virtually every cent of their ticket money had been spent.

And it's good, old-fashioned backstage artistry - not a computer graphic or projection in sight.

Me and Federici: The Phantom of the Opera

I read in today's Herald Sun that the best seat in the house at The Princess Theatre is Stalls Row H, Seat 19. Well, dear reader, I'll let you know who's in that seat... cos they'll have to climb over me to get there.

Tonight, dear reader, I am in The Zone. :)

It's almost twenty years since I first saw Phantom. It was the second or third performance at the Majestic Theatre on West 44th, a year after the London opening. The Broadway production poached the three original stars: Crawford, Brightman and Texan Steve Barton... still the best Raoul I've ever seen. (There have been another 8000 performances since in that theatre alone!)

That night, I had a seat in Row AA. Absolute front row of the "Orchestra". Cos of the configuration of the pit, I was actually closer to the stage than the conductor... But more of this later! Time to hit the road!

The hottest tickets of the year await!

Here's an edit of the review that ran in Monday's Herald Sun.

The Australian production of Phantom of the Opera -- the tenth in the world -- ran like clockwork when it opened in the haunted, beautiful Pricess Theatre in 1990. We were gobsmacked by costumes, awed by the lake scenes and the scene changes, touched by the music... but don't try telling me we were ever scared of the chandelier!

Revisiting the show, "shock of the old" has replaced "shock of the new." Phantom's stagecraft is still excellent, still impressive, but it's no longer an end in itself. That allows us to focus on the opus. It's easier to follow the musical themes, to follow the music box chimes through the pageant of the masked ball at the start of the second act to the final, plaintive "Christine, I love you."

It's easier, too, to delight in Lloyd Webber's impish sense of fun (the mock ballet music) and real skill with discord (the whole Don Juan Triumphant opera-within-an-opera thing).

But familiarity is a twin-edged sword. It makes us ultra demanding. Ultra critical. We want voices to match -- or beat -- the original cast recording. (We get them.) We want drama. Emotional truth. We want to be touched.

For most of the night this Phantom is merely perfect...

And that's where this show surprised me. Thrilled me. For most of the night, it's merely perfect. Ana Marina has an exceptionally full-bodied voice. The ageless John Bowles makes a good Raoul. With a serious does of the flu, Anthony Warlow is still a booming, overwhelming presence. Even the minor characters (like Nadia Komazec's Meg Giry) have stellar voices.

In fact, it's all a little bit too perfect. I kept wishing for a mistake in the pit to remind us that the music is played live. (Bowles provided the excitement of the night by jumping in with the right line at the wrong time! Warlow and conductor Vanessa Scammell coped admirably.)

But the final scene is like nothing I've witnessed before in a music drama. If you've seen Anthony Warlow, you know what a superb actor he is: his mighty Enjolras in Les Mis (a performance which made it onto the international cast recording), his charismatic Papageno in Mozart's The Magic Flute, his show-saving Archibald in The Secret Garden, the list is long. But, here, he supercharges the final stand-off. He is the tortured tyrant, willing to do anything to get the girl.

If the rest of the cast follow Warlow down this path, if they look for the dramatic monster behind the musical mask, if they treat Phantom as an operatic passion play not just a naff old musical, then it might live again for years, not just months.

Anthony Warlow from behind the mask

By Brett Debritz

August 26, 2007 12:00am..........PRETTY RECENT STUFF, HEY?!!!!

ANTHONY Warlow is amused when Queenslanders tell him how much they are looking forward to see him reprise the title role in The Phantom of the Opera.
"When I was up here with Pirates of Penzance recently, I came out of the stage door and people said, 'Oh we can't wait to see you again. We saw you in '97.'

"I said, 'No you didn't.' "

The fact is that Brisbane audiences saw Rob Guest as the Phantom when the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical played a record-breaking 23-week run at the QPAC Lyric Theatre a decade ago.

Warlow quit the show 12 months after it opened in Melbourne in 1990, and two years later he was forced to pull out of a production of Jesus Christ Superstar when he was diagnosed with cancer.

Now, Warlow is fighting fit and has reclaimed the lead role in a new production of Phantom of the Opera, which opened in Melbourne last month and will play a three-month season in Brisbane early next year.

He says he decided to return to the character partly for the sake of his 12-year-old daughter, Phoebe, who had seen the film version of Phantom – with Gerard Butler, of 300 fame, in the title role – but not the stage show.

"I wanted Phoebe to see it," he says. "And, being her father, I wanted her to see me do it."

Although Warlow says his return was "a bit like riding a bike". He feels he can give much more of himself to the show now than he could 17 years ago.

"The instincts are the same but the vocal and physical investment is so much more," he says.

"Maybe it's my age now. I'm 45 and there's a gravity to this performance now; there's a sexuality that can only come with age.

"I'm more confident with it. It is mine now. I feel so much more involved.

"When we did it originally, that wasn't the case. I wasn't allowed to feel involved because of the way it was meant to be set."

Warlow says the first Australian Phantom was very much set to a template established in the original London production, which is still running to capacity houses after 20 years.

He was not encouraged to innovate beyond the benchmark established by Michael Crawford.

"I have to say in the early days it was a little like Disney – you throw on a couple of costumes, then they throw you on," Warlow says.

"Sometimes I felt like I was on roller skates. You'd be pushed on, do your bit and you'd be off again.

"I'm a very gregarious person and I do not like to be shut away and then pulled out to do my bit and then be pushed back into the box."

This time around, he says, from the very first day of rehearsal, it was "buoyant and fun" – albeit a lot of hard work.

But the opening night at Melbourne's Princess Theatre on July 28 was not without drama behind the scenes.

Along with five other cast members, Warlow had succumbed to the flu and his big moment almost didn't arrive at the appointed time.

"I was crook as a dog," he recalls. "I woke up on the Saturday morning and I literally couldn't get out of bed.

"I rang the producers and said, 'I can't even drive myself to the doctor'.

"I couldn't feel my feet in the morning when I fell out of bed – it was like the circulation had gone. It was bizarre. I was in the shower and had the hot water going to try to get the circulation going.

"We went to a couple of ear-nose-throat specialists and they said, 'Look, the chords are not damaged. They're not healthy because they've got a virus around them, but if you feel that you can do this, it won't do you any damage.' That was my big fear.

"So I went home, had a bit of a sleep, woke up and the voice seemed to be there. It was a bit fluffy but the notes were there. When I got to the theatre, it was 6.30pm and the voice was splitting.

"So I rang the producer, John Frost, and said, 'I can't do tonight'. My body was saying: you can't do this.

"Then there was a wonderful moment when the American director, Artie Masella, who is a great director and friend, came into the room and said, 'Anthony, there are two things we can do; you can go home, although the audience will be disappointed, get well and come back when you can do it. Or in your inimitable spirit, you can get out there and give it a go'. "

Along with the other sick cast members, Warlow decided the show must go on – and the result was a sustained standing ovation.

The prolonged applause has continued night after night since, and the feedback confirms that audiences have really taken to the character of the Phantom – a disfigured genius named Erik who falls in love with his young singing student Christine, loses her to his dashing rival Raoul, and then wreaks havoc in the theatre.

"It's spoilt us," Warlow says of the standing ovations, "but in a lovely way.

"We work very hard, so that three minutes at the end of the night, when you know the audience has been with you from the word go, is palpable.

"I want people to think that, as much as Raoul's a lovely fellow, there's so much more that Erik could give her. People have said to me that they don't understand why she goes off with Raoul."

Despite all the theatrical gimmicks and the undeniable spectacle of Phantom when the show is in full flight, Warlow sees it as a simple but powerful love story played in an intimate way.

He says the trick for him is to win over the audience – at least to a certain point in the show – with the Phantom's stage antics.

"It's a very complex beast, as is he," he says both of the show and his character.

"The persona of the Phantom is that he can not only play with the elements on stage physically, which he does – he murders people – but he's playful as well, in a sinister manner. I think the audience picks that up."

The only thing Warlow hasn't achieved in the theatre is to open in a new big musical written especially for him. And he confirms that he and John Frost are discussing the possibility of doing just that after his run in Phantom finishes at the end of next year.

But for now he's concentrating on staying well and doing the job at hand.

"I've been almost to the other side and I've been given the greatest gift, which is a second chance at life, and I embrace it."

DR Jose, that is so weird that Eric (Big Brother) is being talked about at all backstage.  Apparently he's been caught on the feeds quite a few times under the sheets.  I know i'd read that many people had unfortunately been subjected to seeing this.  I wonder if he forgot the cameras have night vision!

I still can't get used to the word "Gas" (Gasoline) when used for petrol. So many cars here now run on gas (LPG)  - very much an alternative to petrol.

I survived the corn festival! No pig wrasslin' this year, but still lots of corn.

I dropped mom off, visited with my cousin Molly (she was there rather then my ex-sister-in-law...my mistake) and my sister and bro-in-law. Sister Sue had made some beautiful bird houses and some framed artwork. Molly had some gorgeous cut class and Buddha artwork and crafty items that I really liked.

I am hoping for some nifty Christmas presents...after all I gave out many hints!  :D

Then I returned home and watched a Bollywood movie.....

...and that Bollywood movie was the classic 1976 mythological BAJRANGBALI, the story of the monkey god Hanuman (as played by Dara Singh) and his devotion to Lord Rama (played by Biswajeet). It is one of the stories from The Ramayan, althought this movie covered several of those stories.

Surely you jest, Mr. Brockman.  :)  One of the most covered songs of the 20th century, you can get vocal versions by everyone from The Andrews Sisters to Carmen Miranda to (more modern) Joao Gilberto to Gal Costa to Quarteto em Cy to.....

She was sitting in the box office at the Snapple Center, chatting up her show, when DH Richard and I went there to purchase tickets for The Fantasticks.  The ladies in front of us, who had just purchased seats for that night's Perfect Crime, were quite thrilled to have met the "star."

I'm guessing that the audience for cable has expanded greatly since the years of REMEMBER WENN. A lot more people now have access to channels they didn't have access to then.

I love REMEMBER WENN. I think it's a real shame that it's never been released on DVD or even VHS for that matter. You can find bootleg copies, but not the real McCoy.

I have to say that I am enjoying MAD MEN even more than REMEMBER WENN....  Maybe it's the time period....but sometimes REMEMBER WENN had some continuity problems and most of the time I didn't get the feeling of urgency that they claimed to be feeling in the broadcasts....and I wouldn't have minded MORE broadcasting and less office/home story...

Bob Dorian was (is/) a Long Island boy... while he was still enjoying his AMC fame he starred in a local production of Dracula in which a good friend of mine also had a part.

boy that was a badly mangled sentence .Where's Rodzinski when you need  him?

He was 'OK"  in the role,  clearly he had been cast because of his name and then current fame.

AMC  used to be a staple in our house as well  back when the films were uncut and commercial free and the films were actual classics .. not Porky's II

Back when AMC was kind of like TCM, I wrote a long letter to Bob Dorian (remember him?) after they aired Toast of New York and Come and Get It.  I listed all of Frances Farmer's films and who held the rights, etc., and urged him/them to air more of her work.  I got a back a very nicely typed auto-reply informing me that as soon as more of his films became available, Francis Farmer was sure to be seen on AMC.  I think that's when the lustre lost a little for me.   ;D

::)  Did you write them back?

It's a cherry cream filling dipped in chocolate and peanuts Usually sold as a Twin Bing. There is also a King Bing

BING BAR meant something entirely different to Frances Farmer, of course, especially during the filming of Rhythm on the Range.   ;)

I don't think AMC beginning going downhill after it dropped REMEMBER WENN.  I never renewed my subscription to the their magazine & slowly began watching fewer & fewer shows & movies.  Up until then I had been addicted to AMC.

I think it started going downhill when it stopped showing classic movies (despite its name). And the addition of commercial breaks. No thanks.

I bought the first DVD issue (it was recently re-released on DVD), and it's still sitting in its shrink wrap on the to-watch shelf. I like the movie, but I'm still not convinced it deserved to win Best Picture over THE HEIRESS.

Four of those five episodes had running commentaries, so I watched a couple of the episodes again with the commentary tracks turned on. For the others, I listened to sections of the commentary but not the entire thing.

The cast was recording the commentaries while the show was still in production last season. For example, I listened to a commentary track from two cast members for episode 13 while they were filming episode 17.

JASON, a svelte, lithe, handsome devil of a merchandise manager, stands outside the Golden Theatre, wearing his show shirt, waiting for the Saturday evening performance of AVENUE Q to come to an end. Broadway legend MARIAN SELDES enters.

SELDES

SELDES
(Dreamily, and putting a hand on JASON'S left shoulder)
Oh! Hasn't this show let out already? I really wouldn't know...I've never seen it. What time does this show let out?

JASON
(Confused and a little afraid)
10:10. The show lets out at 10:10.

SELDES
I've just come from the closing performance of THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING. Can you imagine? I saw the opening and the closing nights... It was wonderful. Did you see it?

JASON
(Cheerily, as to avoid demonstrating fear)
No, I'm afraid I couldn't - I'm always here at this show! I didn't get to see your show, either, I'm afraid...

SELDES

I think you might've mentioned it, but I'd be happy to hear it again!

She's a hoot of a woman. I saw her riding the N train the other day, all clad in purple (her signature color) and looking thoroughly confused as to what stop she needed. She figured it out, though, and made it to her matinee on time.

And THAT is one of the songs Matt and I decided NOT to include in the new cabaret.

tomovoz is psychic indeed!

Ah, I remember the night when David Duchovny sported a red speedo on THE X FILES; the water must have been very warm.   :-X

It's my understanding that he's never been shy about showing his junk. And apparently for good reason!

Back from THE FANTASTICKS! I'm sorry, BK, I didn't see your post about Joe Allen's until I got back.  Mr Spangler is quite good as Matt, and I played Yenta and introduced him to Charlotte after the show.  Mr Tom Jones is wonderful as Henry, and the replacement for the late Leo Burmester is quite wonderful.  The show is in really good shape at the moment.

When did Leo Burmester become late? I must have missed the news. He wasn't that old I am sure

He passed in June of this year.  1944 - 2007.
I saw his Thernardier several times.
Many, many small but memorable film roles as well.

Nice job singing td!

I wish!  The song on my myspace page is from Lee Lessack's "In Good Company" album.  Next weekend, he and Mr. Schwartz will be appearing here in Pittsburgh.

And now, a scene from my bizarre life on the Broad Way:

JASON, a svelte, lithe, handsome devil of a merchandise manager, stands outside the Golden Theatre, wearing his show shirt, waiting for the Saturday evening performance of AVENUE Q to come to an end. Broadway legend MARIAN SELDES enters.

SELDES
What are you doing here?

JASON
I'm selling merchandise for this show! What are you doing here??

SELDES
(Holding JASON'S face in her hands)
I'll do it for you now.

SHE walks away.

End Scene.

LOL!  See?  This is what I miss when I'm not hanging out with you, Jason...we need to remedy that.

By the way, I'd gladly play Marian Seldes.  I smell a Tony...

The spot that felt dicy is the block with the park really late at night, when it's deserted.  But if it felt OK to you tonight, then you should be fine.
