Well, you've read the notes, the notes were piquant, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently trying to spell H-O-M-E.

Title: Re:SPELLING OUT OUR NEEDS

It is manically fast, I can tell you that, and I know it starts out somewhat reminiscent of "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off," but it isn't that tune.  I started singing it as a joke for the kids on our trip when I wanted them to do stuff.  Did I make it up (unlikely) or is it from something buried deep in my subconscious (highly likely)?

TOD: Cops

I like staying motels because most of them have some kind of cable. Then I watch the home redecorating/fixup shows if they get that channel, which Pomona did not have.

When I got together with TCB, George, Jed and Ann in Tacoma, I used the "bastard person" quote and then was delighted as all four of them simultaneously launched into the rest of that speech from Waiting for Guffman.  It is such high cultural shared references that make this site so exceptional.   ;D

Who can turn the world on with his smile?
Who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
Well it's you, Jay, and you should know it
With each glance and every little movement you show it

Love is all around, no need to waste it
You can have a town, why don't you take it
You're gonna make it after all
You're gonna make it after all!

sort of reminds me of Ashoken Farewell
Title: Re:SPELLING OUT OUR NEEDS
Post by: JoseSPiano on August 26, 2007, 09:26:06 PM
Hmm... Well, I don't think it resembles "Ashokan Farewell"... Wrong meter, and wrong tempo... Although maybe that's the "real" Ashokan Farewell, since everyone thought the tune was an existing one, when, in fact, it was written for the series.  Or something like that.  In any case...

It's a cartoon tune.  I just played it, and sang it for my roommies... It's ringing a bell.. We just can't name the bell right now.

Yep, that's what I thought, too.  I thought it was a version of the Bugs Bunny/Daffy Duck "This is it" tune, but it isn't.  But personally I think it's from a cartoon, too.

TOD

Since I work at night, I dont get to watch much telly and I dont have cable...

When the occaision does present itself I like to watch

Masterpiece Theatre
History Detectives
Globetrekker
Ugly Betty
CSI
Eastenders
and some of the Britcoms

However, I will watch either the CBS or ABC soaps from time to time. I refuse to watch the craptastic show on NBC called Passions. No longer watching DOOL. Matt walked away from the show and I quit watching.

I will sometimes listen to Rachel Ray or Oprah. It is usually white noise. Kelly Ripa annoys me.

I prefer tapes or dvds of my classic soaps, Doctor who, Torchwood, Boston Pops, various Chieftains appearances, etc...

On the opportunity that i get to watch cable
I like different programs from time to time:
 HGTV (Design on a dime),
 Animal Planet (they occaisionally have different documentaries), TVLand -- some of the old comedies and westerns
Nick at NIght - Fresh Prince of BelAir and Cheers
WE --- I love to watch McLeod's Daughters when I get the chance

Also... If I am really, really lucky... I can watch soapnet, BBC America,  and National Geographic channel

TOTD:
We watch the News at 7.00 pm each evening, a movie review show on Sundays and little else at all.

We gave up on pay TV which really only provided a larger choice of shows to avoid.

The Last TV shows I watched regularly were "Six Feet Under" and "Carnivale".  "Deadwood" we watched on DVD as we did with "Arrested Development".

Last UK shows which had us involved were "Spooks" (M.I.5) until the last series which lost us and the delightful "Hustle".

DS Betsy and I watched 300 today.  I suspect this is the sort of movie BK would hate (maybe he does already, LOL), but we decided we'd give in to style over substance and ended up enjoying it quite a bit, despite the gore and step-printing  ;D.  What has totally blown my mind though, in checking through the cast at IMDb, is the guy playing Xerxes is the infamous Paulo from Lost.

Lost Luggage Vibes Needed please!   :'(

My parents returned from Germany today... their luggage made it fine to Philadelphia. Between Philadelphia and Newport News airport their luggage disappeared. Their clothes, but no souvenirs, so that's not too bad, but they were bringing me a German audio book of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and a German translation of the book itself, and a T-shirt saying "My mom went to Venice and all I got was this lousy T-shirt" and I was really looking forward to that stuff... :'(

It's Fine and Dandy by Kay Swift and Paul James.

I remember some intentionally bad magician used to hum it while performing, but it's an old radio number, I believe

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Luggage Return Vibes for DR 3-D ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[/move]
DR JMK, the melody reminded me of several things: "This is it, the night of nights" (wasn't that a MICKEY MOUSE CLUB tune?), a stock Vaudeville play off ("Get the hook!!!"), or possibly a Warner Brothers cartoon riff from the 1940s or 50s.  Ashoken Farewell?  This chromatic vaudeville-esque melody owes as much to a pentatonic folk tune as I do to Dr Jonas Salk.
Title: Re:SPELLING OUT OUR NEEDS
Post by: elmore3003 on August 27, 2007, 05:48:07 AM
DR Noel is correct! And I worked on the recording of "Fine and Dandy!" Of course, that wasn't one of the songs I scored.  Warner Brothers Music owns the copyright, so naturally, like "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down," it was fair game for Warner Brothers' usage by Carl Stalling.
***  ATTENTION!  ATTENTION! ***
Hey, Guys--I am okay and fine and dandy!
And I am so sorry for cause any undue worry and fret and whatnot.  I've been away on a couple of trips with friends and family and had absolutely no internet access at any of the places I stayed.  To make things worse, my Comcast connection at home was out when I left and was still gone when I arrived home yesterday!  And then when I went through my pile of mail last night, I found a card from DR Singdaw voicing concern for my whereabouts.  I ran over to my neighbor lady's house to ask if I could use her phone-line AOL connection, but she began to tell me about her week of woe and it seemed impolite to ask if I could use her computer afterwards so I had to wait until now to logon here at work.
Again, sorry about not letting y'all know what was going on.  And thanks for the vibes and concerns anyway.  :)
It really sux!  I had been having trouble with both the internet connection and interference on a couple of channels and had Comcast come to fix it a few days before I left.  All the guy did was replace the signal splitters and then give me a story about replacing my analog service with digital (which would be a waste of time since my neighborhood and house are not yet wired for fios.)  They will be getting another call from me today, that's fer shure!
And it's nice to see DR Jose's birthday jaunt. I am, however, shocked at the omission of Junior's cheesecake.
Well, I suppose the BIGGEST news since you were away is that yesterday, on his birthday, DR JoseSPiano had an opportunity to eat a piece of Junior's cheesecake from the original store location but DID NOT.    :o
And, trust me, I really did want a slice of cheesecake.. especially after seeing everyone else around me order dessert.  However, I really was full after my dinner, which was/is actually a good thing.  Just means my stomach is "smaller".  Or something like that.  If I had ordered a slice, I don't think I could have had more than two or three forkfuls before getting sick.  I was thinking I would get a slice to go, but since I couldn't keep the slice chilled during the rest of my walk...  And then I even thought of stopping by the Times Square location to have a slice there...  Well...  Then once I found that the line at Pinkberry was not that long - and I really wanted something cold (a.k.a. ice cream, frozen yogurt) - well... And they had the mochi too!
However, there's always today.  :)
The only "new show" I watch is HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER; I stumbled on it at the end of its first season, when I was giving 2 lengthy breathing treatments to a patient and ended up seeing almost the entire episode. I especially like the Sexist pig/yuppie played by Neil Patrick Harris, who is an absolute stitch(Is that phrase still used?).... It's late but the worst musical I saw was just this past May, a front row seat for Mamm Mia in Nyc, It replaced CATS, which at least had the song Memory. The Mia finale/cutain calls were so lengthy I began to have nightmares that they wouldnt let us leave the theater.The only good things about it are that it's providing lotsa work for show folk and enjoyment for the people who do enjoy it(one co-worker has seen it 3 times)
Although I have to say the second 4 I remember completely differently (just went back and listened to the F&D CD), plus I also remember some cheesy magician or comedian doing it with the "da da DA da" routine, so if it was F&D, it transmogrified somewhere along the line, because the version I remember is pretty much as I notated it.
the Monkey Cake place
Do you mean the bakery that sells Monkey Cake, or is there a whole store devoted just to Monkey Cake?  :P
I would say that it's actually like balls of cinnamon buns (without raisins) that are stuck together in a pyramid like pile.  But now with the buttercream, they are arranged into a sort of a bowl shape with the icing plopped into the center.  I never thought it was the best quality of cake, but still addicting.
Ah, gotcha.  Sounds like "Monkey Bread" to me.  And, yes, I have had the "variation" with icing on top.  Talk about gilding the lily.  Amy's Bread here in NYC started selling something called "Cinnamon Crunchies" which are basically small "loaves" of Monkey Bread baked in muffin tins, a Monkey Bread Cupcake.  I think they would call them Monkey Bread, but I guess they don't want to mix it up with their Monkey Cake.
OK... 'Tis Noon here on the City of New York, and I really should get showered and get ready to head out.  Of course, I'm not working today, so I'm not sure where I'll be heading, but I really don't want to stay cooped up in the apartment today.  -And the weather ain't bad today either.  -Besides, I have a Birthday Cake deficit to make up.  Although, I think I'll be sampling some Italian gelato this afternoon.  :)
There is an actual Monkey Cake (or maybe it's called Monkey Bread) place on the Ocean City boardwalk.  But then, there are stands that sell nothing but carmel coated popcorn, funnel cake and curly fries.  My sister has an idea to open a place that makes fresh cotton candy.  Why not?, I say.
TOD:
LOST -- incredibly good writing and acting, but I don't think BK would appreciate the direction.
HEROES -- the best comic book adaptation of a comic that never existed before--a very fun show!
THE AMAZING RACE -- just about the only competitive reality show that never became stocked with actron/model posers that populate other shows of this ilk.  The editing manipulates the hell out of the TV audience, but in a good way.  I'm usually on the edge of my seat with this show.
PROJECT RUNWAY -- bitchy artistic types making dresses--c'mon, what more do you want?
The only new fall show that I am in any way interested in is the Kelsey Grammer/Patricia Horton sitcom.  I might give that Lord of the Flies kid reality show a try also.  I think that all in all, television has given up on delivering much of anything that I want to watch nowadays.
There are places where one can buy factory-made bags of cotton candy, but I haven't seen any place that makes it fresh.  Perhaps because of the salty/sandy air?
MASTERPIECE THEATRE
EASTENDERS
are the only shows I watch regularly these days. I used to be a big fan of MYSTERY! but after all the PBS budget cuts there's not a lot of MYSTERY! left. I also did NOT like the adaptions of Elizabeth George's novels. Too many changes from the original and too many cuts to fit a 90-minute format, IMO.
I was a fan of CSI for many years, but it just got too weird for me.
These days I watch DVDs instead. There are sooo many films I missed over the years--I'm not even close to caught up. And, as most of you know, I'm a huge fan of British television. I don't have BBC America; I rent what I think will appeal. Both cheaper and more convenient.
Good Afternoon!
Well... I'm still here.  Phone calls, mail, stuff in general.  But at least I'm now ready to put my shoes on and head out.
However...
One of those phone calls was to my parents.   Who, as it turns out, were going through airport security right when I called.  They're on their way to Seattle to visit my Auntie Tess, and then they're heading up to Vancouver for the weekend for my Mom's Nursing School's 50th Reunion.  -I think she said 50th.  In any case, they'll be back next Tuesday.
Hmm... So maybe I will head down to Richmond tomorrow for a few days since I'll have the whole house to myself.  ;)
It really sux!  I had been having trouble with both the internet connection and interference on a couple of channels and had Comcast come to fix it a few days before I left.  All the guy did was replace the signal splitters and then give me a story about replacing my analog service with digital (which would be a waste of time since my neighborhood and house are not yet wired for fios.)  They will be getting another call from me today, that's fer shure!
I hope you get a credit for all the time that you've been gone since it still doesn't work!
My current favorite shows air in the summer, THE CLOSER & BURN NOTICE.  I also enjoy EUREKA.
I’m looking forward to the return of BONES & THE DRESDEN FILES.
Top shows I have enjoyed but aren’t sure if they will hold up for another season are; HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, BOSTON LEGAL, HOUSE & STARGATE: ATLANTIS.
Since we couldn’t get a decent connection during the original broadcasting, we have been watching STAR TREK, ENTERPRISE.  We have seen almost all of the early episodes & are waiting for the later ones to be shown.
During the past television season, I only watched Desperate Housewives - not great tv, just a fun guilty pleasure - and Lost, until it moved to 10:00 PM.  Now that I have a DVR, perhaps I'll pick that up again.  Not sure that bk would enjoy either one.
Some series that I have enjoyed on DVD are Six Feet Under, South Park, The Closer.  I hear good things about The Office, but haven't seen it - only the original British version, which I liked a lot.
LOST.  Which I only began watching once the first season was released on dvd, as that season's scheduling was a total fiasco from the start. But, once on the island, the show became my all-time favorite television drama.  The characters, the backstories, the frontstories, the locale, the writing and direction are all above average.  After season three's finale, I've decided that LOST owes a lot to James Hilton's LOST HORIZON.
DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES.  Not always the best show, but, much better now that Joe Keenan is writing and co-producing(?).  Great cast from top to bottom, too.  Has a great re-watchability factor.
GREY'S ANATOMY.  I'm not always happy with the direction of the show - it relies too much on pop music (like SMALLVILLE) to tell its tales.  I often get irritated with the characters, and am in complete hate with one, but, that's the joy of character driven drama, isn't it?
CALIFORNICATION.  I watched the first episode only because of David Duchovny, I'll watch the remaining episodes to see how this anti-anti-hero plays out the season.
KYLE XY.  I just wish the show would make up its mind as to what it is.  I've skipped most of this season, but have backup discs to view later.
JOHN FROM CINCINNATTI.  recommended to me by a friend, and she was right.  Surfer dudes, spiritualism and Rebecca deMornay.  Sad to say that one season was all HBO could do with it.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, DR Jane, but THE DRESDEN FILES was canceled after its first season.
DR td, Joe Keenan is no longer associated with DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. He asked to be let out of his contract at the end of season three. I'm assuming he and Marc Cherry just couldn't see eye-to-eye on the tone for the show or where they wanted it to go, and since it is basically Cherry's to do with as he pleases, well, Keenan left.
Next, I watched the first of the two Disney Channel DVDs which came in today - RETURN TO HALLOWEENTOWN.
It's amazing that the current generation of preteens has this whole world of Disney favorites that have nothing to do with the Disney of old (Mickey Mouse, Herbie the Love Bug, etc.)
This is the fourth TV movie set in Halloweentown with these characters (though a new actress is playing the leading witch). And who knew that Debbie Reynolds has been making these TV-films for Disney? I didn't.
When I go back down, I'll finish the TV-movie (Millicent Martin is also in it), and then watch whatever special features are on the disc. I know there is a making of featurette. I'm not sure if there is anything else or not.
I guess they figure since nobody likes her (she was on the news for making inappropriate comments against jewish people) they would do this.
I believe her comments were made to Jameka.  To my knowledge, Jameka has never told anyone, so none of the others would know.
Also, bear in mind that Amber has never been "America's Choice" for eviction, so far as I know, since she made those comments (based on sheer ignorance, more than anything).
I use the TV for live sports and breaking news.  It has ceased being a form of entertainment.
I watch one comedy and one drama because friends of mine work on them.  30 Rock and The Closer.  I'm not embarrassed for my friends, as each seems to out-class the competition.
I've been fascinated by Mad Men's production design.  It's set in the year and place of my birth, and how often do you get to see that?  I don't like the characters, nor do I find the drama compelling; watching with the sound off would do the trick.
"Reality" shows are never like reality and are ALL based on the premise that "real" people will make themselves look stupid.
A season or so ago I enjoyed Gregory Itzen's impersonation of Richard Nixon on 24.
Some cartoons aren't so bad.  And while I can't stand doctor shows, House often makes me giggle.
Lost
Heroes
Ugly Betty
Medium
Jericho
Ghost Whisperer
Smallville
Supernatural
Am Looking Forward to:
Journeyman
Oh, I forgot to put Desperate Housewives on my TOD list.
I was going to keep MOST EXTREME ELIMINATION CHALLENGE on my list, but this season, from the handful of episodes I watched, doesn't seem to be quite as funny as past seasons.
And if I had more time to watch TV and fewer DVDs that I need to catch up on I would likely have many more favorite shows on my list.
Good Evening!
DR Jason and I ended up having another wonderful lunch at Landmarc in the Time-Warner Center.  Today's selections: Smoked Mozzarella and Ricotta Fritters and Fried Zucchini served with Spicy Marinara; Landmarc Chicken Burger with Fries and Salad Greens; Frisee Salad with Lardons (and the requisite poached egg).  All quite good and yummy.
And for dessert, we ordered a sampler of today's ice cream and sorbet flavors (each one served in their own sugar cone, and their own holder): milk chocolate and mint chocolate chip ice creams, and coconut sorbet.  Quite the bargain for only $8.00.  -However, as DR Jason discovered, if you do have the mint chocolate chip ice cream, know that the mint flavor is quite pronounced (and still good) that it makes it hard to properly taste the other flavors.  ;)
And then walked around and around the Park.  DR Jason ended up taking some pictures of some interesting debris we came across.  ;)
I ended up heading back home, and left Jason on his own in the big scary Park.  My feet are still recovering from yesterday, and I have a big ole mosquito bite on the back of my left leg which seems to be at it's worst today.  In any case, it's nice putting my feet up right now.
Hmm... Watching some show on Discovery Home.  Right now, a contractor is discovering the amazingly and appallingly bad work of the previous contractor.  It only took five minutes to take off the roof liner, since the original contractor didn't bother to seal the tar paper, nor nail the gutter walls in place properly.  Now that's some bad work.
DR td, Joe Keenan is no longer associated with DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. He asked to be let out of his contract at the end of season three. I'm assuming he and Marc Cherry just couldn't see eye-to-eye on the tone for the show or where they wanted it to go, and since it is basically Cherry's to do with as he pleases, well, Keenan left.
That's sad, BUT Nathan Fillion is joining the cast, so, hoo and ray!
MattH - I would say we've agreed on certain films before.
Appreciate all the suggestions.  I've only watched three TV progams in the last ten years, and only four in the last fifteen - the four are, The Larry Sanders Show (excellent), Curb Your Enthusiasm (up through the season with The Producers - I got weary of it that season), Alias (which I really liked the first two seasons of, and then, beginning with season three, sadly watched it go to hell until it limped to its silly conclusion), and The Sopranos, which, even in its worst moments was some of the best TV ever.
Oh, I keep meaning to mention...
It seems that it is "Season of Savings" time again here in NYC.  This started off a Winter Promotion in order to bring in business during the traditionally slow months of January and February.  However, there seem to be a couple of mini-Seasons throughout the year.  In any case....
If you go to Season Of Savings (http://www.seasonofsavings.com), you can view the current discounts.  Most of them are for shows, but there a few hotel and restaurants offers too.
*BK, Cason, BJ and company - You may want to print out a couple of the discount vouchers if you're planning on catching some shows while you're in town.  *And remember sometimes you can sometimes get just released house seats the day of.
I watched "Prime" yesterday and fell TOTALLY IN LOVE with NYC...again.
You folks living there are SO-O-O LUCKY!  It's amazing how a movie can make a city so large look so appealing.
I love PRIME! My friend Naomi Aborn plays Meryl Streep's younger daughter.
8 hours on the great apartment hunt! We spent a morning organizing, then a stop at 157th and Amsterdam where the realtor was actor Jose Llana of ON THE TOWN, the revival of FLOWER DRUM SONG, and currently wonderful THE PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE; we liked the space but not so much the neighborhood. Then 135th and Riverside, which would be my choice if I had a daughter; the 11 and 5 bus stop right outside the apartment door and both buses run north from Juilliard, so I feel that's a good safety factor after dark.  The City Colelge neighborhood is wonderful as well.  After that Sherman Avenue north of Dyckman, which was glorious space but a long haul to the subway and the neighborhood seemed particularly Latin and Loud. When I left them, they were off to 151st and Broadway.  The Gilfrys are great folk, and I wish them well.  At some point, before he leaves, I'm taing Rodney down to a "Brain" rehearsal. He loves the CD.
Art Metrano
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Art Metrano (born September 22, 1936 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American actor, best known for his role as Capt. Mauser in Police Academy 2 and Police Academy 3. He left the series due to a serious fall at home on September 17, 1989, that seriously injured his spinal cord and left him disabled.
In the early 1970s, he frequently appeared on The Tonight Show as a "magician" performing absurd tricks (such as making his fingers "jump" from one hand to another) while constantly humming an inane theme song (named Fine and Dandy). This was referenced in Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story, when a character who had visited Jesus Christ in the past claims that "[Jesus'] abilities may have been exaggerated." The scene then cuts to Jesus performing Metrano's act, theme song and all.
Currently, he tours with his one-man show, "Jews Don't Belong On Ladders...An Accidental Comedy", which has raised more than $175,000 for Project Support for Spinal Cord Injury to help buy crutches, wheelchairs and supplies in lieu of medical research and long term solutions.
Attorney Paul Hittleman is now representing Art Metrano in his lawsuit against 20th Century Fox for using his comedy "magic act" in the aforementioned Family Guy Movie.
On YouTube.com, you can find young boys and girls aged nine through the college years mimicing Metrano's "magic act" and calling it the "Jesus Dance." His popularity has grown, but none of the young imitators know the truth of who originated this funny classic comedy routine due to the lack of his own YouTube channel and/or Internet presence.
DRMiss Karen, yesterday you posted this:
The title of my next musical: Buttfluffsical! (of course, it would be for the Fringe Festival and DR ELmo would think it's crap...)
I am sorry that my negative opinions for two turkeys I saw in this year's festival, neither of which you personally witnessed even if there were a bit of maternal attachment to one of the aforesaid turkeys, has tainted your conception of my outlook on the New York Fringe Festival.  I can say without hesitation that the Festival's wonderfully silly For The Love Of Tiffany, with its classic outlook "Let America Come," outrageously rude lyrics by the talented if unpleasant Amanda Green, remains one of my favorite moments of New York theatregoing.
As to the Fringe "awards" it's already been pointed out elsewhere that they're not "awards" - just a bunch of friends and family voting and insuring their shows are "winners."  It's just silly - why they feel the need to do this sort of thing is anyone's guess - the shows are the shows and people like what they like.  But this way they can use in their adverts or fundraising "best musical" even though they're one of three.  Whatever works, I suppose.
As to the Fringe "awards" it's already been pointed out elsewhere that they're not "awards" - just a bunch of friends and family voting and insuring their shows are "winners."  It's just silly - why they feel the need to do this sort of thing is anyone's guess - the shows are the shows and people like what they like.  But this way they can use in their adverts or fundraising "best musical" even though they're one of three.  Whatever works, I suppose.
Well, aren't most "awards" voted on by a panel of their "peers and colleagues".  Whether they're silly or not, it's always nice knowing some people liked your show.  Or at least saw it.  ;)
Doesn't NYMF do a similar program? I think you have had to seen a certain number of shows in order to qualify to vote.  Are you going to pull Brain off the ballot?
Is the interview subject a disciple of physical culture and hustles in the parking lot of Gold's Gym around 1958?
Is it bigger than a bread box?
I know you will all find this hard to believe, but all I care about is that people come and enjoy The Brain - all else is meaningless, especially "awards" voted on by friends and family who stuff the votes (which is exactly what I've been told happens with the Fringe shows).  I'm glad for all the FingeNYC "award" winners, but, in the end, for ME, it's all silly game-playing.
Watching something called How I Met Your Mother - bad jokes, and, like most comedies these days, it seems to be modeled structurally after Seinfeld.
The show can be uneven.  I don't really see the similarity with Seinfeld.  Only one of the main characters on this show is a shallow jerk.
Okay, I've been watching The Closer - let's forget whether it's good or not good - I think I'd have to see some other episodes so that I actually might know what it's about - but WHAT is this endless crap at the bottom of the screen advertising other shows during the entire show?  How are you supposed to stay involved with all that distracting type on the screen from beginning to end?  Takes you right out of the show - when did this start happening?
I would also ask who the female lead is and I would also say I find her accent extremely annoying, but maybe that's how the character is.  Nice to see some familiar faces with whom I've worked before.
I want to know what the insurance rider is on this show.  Yes, I get the "motivation" behind making these people walk - in high heat - to cover a certain amount of miles in a certain amount of time, but, frankly, when it's hot enough that the soles of your shoes are actually melting, well... That's just plain stupid on everyone's part.
Bruce you really should watch THE CLOSER from the beginning to get to know the characters and see how they have evolved.
I guess you missed all the discussions about the annoying screen advertising. ;D
I'm surprised you aren't familiar with Kyra Sedgwick.  According to IMDB:
Her first brush with stardom came in Born on the Fourth of July (1989) as Donna, the high school sweetheart of Tom Cruise. Two of her roles led to Golden Globe nominations: Miss Rose White (1992) (TV) and Something to Talk About (1995). She met her husband (Keven Bacon) when they played leads in the TV movie _Lemon Sky (1988)(TV)_ .
I thought MISS ROSE WHITE was terrific.
Thank goodness for good news from Craig & Ioana.  He likes his new classes.
When they returned home tired from their trip they found the locks had been changed on the door to the entrance of their building.  It took 30 minutes to contact the landlord who then contacted the new neighbor to let them in.  The landlord never apologized for not letting them know the locks were changed.  This is the same landlord who still has not fixed the refrigerator or anything else he promised to do.
Kitty is fine but the kennel never called to inform them that Yogi was not eating.
They just returned from the vet with him & are very concerned.  He has a fever, is dehydrated & his fur is falling out.  Fortunately, the very tired, vet stayed late to see him.  The test show elevated white (indicating a fever) & red blood (for dehydration) counts.  Of course if the antibiotics don’t work it could be more serious.  He lost a total of 10 pounds while they were gone, and he is thin to begin with.
The good news is he is eating some and drinking now.
Very stupid of me not to have gotten that.  The one good thing about this is that he won't likely kick Craig out because the dog howls when he isn't there. ;D
Craig would not let me interfere when I was there & we were out maneuvered.  We had to go to his their business to sign the contract & didn't see the work hadn't been done, as we expected it had, at the apartment.  I did tell Craig we should look at it first.
It was a very difficult & exhausting time & didn't get him moved in until the day I left.  Craig was exhausted before he arrived from Bucharest.  He really only minds the broken frig, and of course the hassle with the key.
And did anyone catch the flap over the "pull ad" for Grease last week?  In quotes running along the "back" of the ad was, "You're The One That I Want", with it being credited to "Variety", "The New York Times", the AP, etc.  They had simply pulled the title of the TV show from all the reviews, and then ran it as what the reviewers said about the show.  Quite creative to say the least.
Topic of the Day...Shows that I like (nothing unique, though):
Battlestar Galactica (it's gritty, good scripts and acting, very good special effects)
Boston Legal (just mostly goofy)
Desperate Housewives (mindless entertainment)
Doctor Who (it's just fun)
Ghost Whisperer (I got sucked into this...I don't know why)
Grey's Anatomy (it's set in Seattle)
Heroes (very good comic book TV show...and eye candy ;))
How I Met Your Mother (for me, three words:  Neil Patrick Harris)
Kyle XY (another one that I just got sucked into)
Lost (I love the backstories and how they all fit together)
Medium (I like the family and especially the children)
Psych (funny buddy comedy)
Torchwood (from England)
Ugly Betty (just good old-fashioned fun)
Shows that I don't like...I don't watch. :)
Dear boy, this is haineshisway.com - the place where we can rant to our heart's content - we've all done it, and we'll all continue to do it, I'm sure.  What fun would it be if we couldn't do useless rants every now and then?  If there were some sort of reality to these Fringe awards then I'd say bravo.  But, there isn't, at least from what's been told to me.  Like 'em or hate 'em, there is a certain logic to the Tony Awards or any "real" awards presentation.  Not necessarily good logic, but at least logic.  But, if it makes people happy, grand, say I.
And that's what makes horse racing.
I have to completely rethink a whole series of scenes in our show because we're not going to have the rolling General's unit - impossible to store, which, unless one is Roller Derby or a show with a humungous amount of dough behind it, is a big issue.  The monied shows hire big crews to remove the set after each performance, load it on a truck and then store it until the next performance.
Part of the visual gag of these scenes is that more and more people end up on the unit with him and so it becomes more and more difficult to push off.  I'm now going to have to figure out a clever way to do all that without having it.
Dear boy, this is haineshisway.com - the place where we can rant to our heart's content - we've all done it, and we'll all continue to do it, I'm sure.  What fun would it be if we couldn't do useless rants every now and then?  If there were some sort of reality to these Fringe awards then I'd say bravo.  But, there isn't, at least from what's been told to me.  Like 'em or hate 'em, there is a certain logic to the Tony Awards or any "real" awards presentation.  Not necessarily good logic, but at least logic.  But, if it makes people happy, grand, say I.
And that's what makes horse racing.
I know, I know.
I'm just getting more snarky now that I'm older.  -Or is that "smarmy"?  Or both?
Picture this: You’re the artistic director of a regional theatre, one with a pretty good reputation for doing new musicals.  Hundreds of scripts and demos cross your desk every year.  It’s a burden to read them all, because, new musicals being what they are, so many of them are awful.  So, with nobody looking over your shoulder, you cheat a little: You decide not to read the musicals that haven’t been done in New York.  You feel you can do that because you’ve great faith that if a show can make it there, it can make it anywhere.  Whoa, there’s still too many musicals on your pile.  Look around again.  Nobody’s looking over your shoulder, so you decide to read ONLY those musicals produced in New York that have won awards.  Doesn’t matter if the award was given by a panel of experts or just friends and relatives, if it’s won one, you’re going to read it.  If it hasn’t, doesn’t matter if it’s West Side Story, it’s not going to get read.
Still think awards are meaningless?
I Wish It Could Be Otherwise…
I agree with you on the tv thing, BK. I usually only turn it on to watch the news.
I rarely watch network stuff anymore. A lot of it is horrible.
Topic of the Day...Shows that I like (nothing unique, though):
Battlestar Galactica (it's gritty, good scripts and acting, very good special effects)
Boston Legal (just mostly goofy)
Desperate Housewives (mindless entertainment)
Doctor Who (it's just fun)
Ghost Whisperer (I got sucked into this...I don't know why)
Grey's Anatomy (it's set in Seattle)
Heroes (very good comic book TV show...and eye candy ;))
How I Met Your Mother (for me, three words:  Neil Patrick Harris)
Kyle XY (another one that I just got sucked into)
Lost (I love the backstories and how they all fit together)
Medium (I like the family and especially the children)
Psych (funny buddy comedy)
Torchwood (from England)
Ugly Betty (just good old-fashioned fun)
Shows that I don't like...I don't watch. :)
I also like both Torchwood and Doctor Who... Not a fan of medium
I finished RETURN TO HALLOWEENTOWN. Not as amusing as any ordinary episode of SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH, but it was colorful and light and I'm sure appealed to preteen girls.
As with any entertainment area: books, movies, art, music, theater.
That doesn't mean there isn't plenty of it that is entertaining and even enlightening.
I just have to hurt more for it.
I have some old brit coms on tape that i rather like also. One is Darling Buds of May that has a very young Catherine Zeta Jones starring.
I am hoping that the rest of All Creatures will be released in Region 2.
I also watched the 6-minute "Making of" featurette on the HALLOWEENTOWN DVD. Everyone mentioned missing Debbie Reynolds on this one. She only makes two brief appearances and probably filmed them in one day.
Next, I watched CHARLIE CHAN AT MONTE CARLO. I had never seen it before. This was Warner Oland's last completed Chan film, and he doesn't seem all together. His line readings and reactions are very slow, and it's a bit less entertaining than some of his earlier efforts.
The remastered DVD image looks pretty good for a 1938 film though there is spotting and dirt.
There was a nice tribute to Oland's career and a few details about his last days on the MONTE CARLO special feature section. Very worthwhile little featurette.
On the flip side of the MONTE CARLO DVD is the 1929 movie BEHIND THE SCREEN which featured the first film appearance by the Charlie Chan character. I'll watch this tomorrow. I've never seen it before.
I liked THE CLOSER though I pegged the killer early on this week. Often I go totally in another direction, but not this week.
I loved how Brenda used the Homeland Security stuff against them as much as she could. That had me rolling with laughter.
Yes, I still think meaningless awards are meaningless - if that's the way regional theaters work, then it's no wonder so much crap gets done.  And I mean that in the nicest possible way.
~~~Re-hydration vibes to Yogi~~~

Sherlock is a lot like Dixie Bell in the growths on the faces department.
Right now, even though she's lying down, she has a new toy monkey, which sticks out its tongue when its being squeezed, which she will not part with.

I watched a bit of a Bollywood extravaganza, one based on SENSE & SENSIBILITY, then the CMT PICK DVD OF JOE NICHOLS which came out last week.  Lots of acoustic performances, including one of Iris DeMint's "No Time to Cry" which gets me every time.
