Well, you've read the notes, you know everything there is to know and then some, you know what was dangling, you know, you know, you know (that is three you knows or one U-No Bar).  So, let's have loads of lovely posts, shall we? 8)

These trivia contests are sooooo daunting.  Can't I just accept the booby prize now?

Just between you and me, Dear Panni:  Never, ever, EVER let on to BK that you have not read his notes.

And you are more than welcome!

This contest would even stump me if I didn't know the answers.  But, everyone likes a challenge, and this one's a doozy.  I've said that before, however, and ended up getting lots of correct guesses.

I guess I'll go to bed, too.  Although Star! is on at one.  Don't want to Tivo it, but I AM going to Tivo The Caretakers and Carnival in Costa Rica for sure.

I was present this evening, Dear Readers, at the Los Angeles premiere of a new documentary called My Architect.  This film was created by Nathaniel Kahn, son of famous architect Louis Kahn.

There are three core elements to this film.  It is subtitled "A Son's Journey," and the film documents Nathaniel's search to discover the father he really did not know by exploring his architecture and talking to the people who knew him.

In that process, the second core element, a survey of the elder Mr. Kahn's buildings, and a critical assessment of his work by his peers, is created.  The younger Mr. Kahn was successful in filming interviews with the creme de la creme of the world of architecture from the latter half of the 20th century.  We see and hear Mr. Philip Johnson, Mr. I. M. Pei, Mr. Robert A.M. Stern, Mr. Vin Scully, Mr. Moshe Kafdie and others share very frank (and sometimes hilarious) comments about Kahn's works and Kahn the man.  We also gain insight from individuals who worked closely with Kahn in the creation of several of his masterpieces, and others intimately familiar with those buildings, all of whom speak eloquently about their soul.  The buildings are beautifully photographed in this film.

The third element of the film focuses on the mystery of the man, Louis Kahn.  He died of a heart attack in the men's room at Penn Station in New York in 1973.  Because he had altered the passport he had with him, he lay unclaimed in the morgue for three days.  His eerie demise serves as the catalyst of the real mystery that is explored in this film, as the elder Mr. Kahn had three separate families.  He was married, and had a daughter with his wife.  While married, he became involved with two other women, one by whom he had another daughter, and one by whom he had a son, Nathaniel, the maker of this film.  The three families did not physically cross paths until Mr. Kahn's funeral.  There is an almost surreal scene in the film of the three half siblings meeting to discuss their common father.

Mr. Kahn did not have the success that many of his peers enjoyed.  His architecture was not universally accepted when it was created, and only as time passed has its importance become better recognized.  Some of his greatest works include the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, and the capital complex in Bangladesh.  One Kahn building with which I was unfamiliar until this evening is the library at Exeter College in Exeter, New Hampshire.  From the outside, the building could be mistaken for one of the many industrial mill buildings that used to dot the New England landscape.  The exterior does little to prepare one for the interior, the centerpiece of which is a huge atrium, with enormous circular cutouts that fill each of the atrium's four sides, exposing the several levels of the library.  The effect is nothing short of stunning.

The film flows nicely and tells its three stories very well.  It's a bit self-indulgent at times; I could have done with fewer reaction shots of the younger Mr. Kahn as he listens to his interviewees' comments.  At times, I thought this story might have been better served in subjective written form, and adapted to the screen by an objective third party filmmaker.  But in a sense, the younger Mr. Kahn was working against the clock.  Many of the elder Mr. Kahn's peers are quite advanced in age, and any delay in getting a film made might have meant losing key commentators.

I finally finished Thursday's posts! About to go to bed...

Jane, I know how to do laundry, but my mom chooses to do it, so I let her. :) (She's a cleaning nut. Seriously. She actually got her toes stuck in the vacuum about two weeks ago. She didn't stop running it, so my bro and I didn't hear her shriek). About next year--my great-aunt in Philly, who LOVES to wash, dry, and iron clothes, has told me that she will do all my laundry when I go to school there (about half an hour from where she lives). I just don't think I could do that to her!

"The reason I don't do chores," by Laura (in a 7 year old child's voice)

Yesterday my mommy asked me to make my bed. I went upstairs, pulled all of the covers down, pulled them back up, straightened them, and folded them the way Mommy does. Then, I put my comforter on the bed. I was done! I called my mommy: "Mommy, I'm done! Come see!" Mommy came upstairs and scrunched up her nose. She said it looked sloppy and "not up to her standards," so she was going to redo it. I said, "Fine, if you don't like it, then do it yourself" and turned up my nose the way Auntie M says I do.

Ok, so that's not the exact sequence, but yes, that incident occurred when I was young. I figured if I didn't do things Mommy's way, then Moo (what I call my mom) could and should do them herself (if she didn't appreciate the oh-so-hard work I did). It's become a bad habit now, but occasionally (like when my Auntie M comes) I make it myself. I make it darn well, too! :)

BK, I performed "Born to Entertain" multiple times in 8th grade. Love it, love it, love it. I wish I had been a child star. ::sulking, but not really!::

BK, since you'd like me to speak, I'll say this: my friend is keeping me up with stories about video games. (Final Fantasy X and X-2, in case you wanted to know.) I never played video games as a kid, was never compelled to do so, don't play them now. Still, she insists on giving me every detail and every plot point. It's all right, though. I now know to bring this scenario up next time I talk to her about a musical! I've been sitting through this for about four hours. I love Tiff, though! :) Still, she owes me! "Bwahaha"--stolen from Tiff

With this post, I become a senior member!

(Sadly, as I wrote that, I thought, "With this ring, I thee wed." Who has romance on her mind? Hmm? Oh, speaking of weddings, I realized I am probably the brunette equivalent of Trista of Bachelorette "fame," except I don't speak with an annoying baby-talk voice, and I don't plan to have an outdoor wedding complete with helicopters. There will probably be some *pink* in it, though!)

I took a shot at the trivia question!  :D

DR PANNI I have been thinking (dangerous, I know) and I think the incorrect spelling of your name may be the key.  I know when I work with government databases, an extra space, an "ave" instead of "av" will result in duplicates.  Sending the copies you did should help someone take the "new" Panni out of the system.  Data entry....computers and humans.

"Open the pod bay doors, HAL."  "I'm sorry, Dave, I can't do that."

How many legandaries does he...?

I really need this prize
Please God, I need this prize
I've got to get this prize!

God, I hope I got it

I've come this far, but even so
It could be yes, it could be no,
How many names does he...?

Who am I anyway?
He calls me Shayne not Mike
My ID Is a  picture of a person I don't know.

What does he want from me?
What should the answers be?
So many answers all around, and here we go.

Oh I like this topic for today.

The flop that should have been a hit. I would say Merrily We Roll Along. Even though I saw it early in previews (I didn't understand what the preview process was back then) I loved the score and I never had a problem with the story going backwards. It was just the physical production that was so awful and maybe the actors were too young, but I will always have fond memories of it and would love to see it back on Broadway and as much of the original cast that are still acting doing the show before they get too old!!!

I will also tell you that I never understood how CATS was such a big hit. Never understood how TS Eliot won Tony awards for Best Book (There was none) and lyrics (they were for the most part taken from his poems and not directly written for the theater. With the major exception of Memories which was written for the show and the most annoying theater song ever) The plot if there was one dealt with people auditioning for a place in heaven. Unlike  A Chorus Line where we had a vested interest on who would be chosen; in CATS I did care and for the most part they all looked a like. I listen to score several time and it never grabbed me. I saw the show once (I had to review it for the radio show I was producing at the time) and that was enough. But to run all those years on Broadway..........

Title: Re:THE RETURN OF THE UNSEEMLY TRIVIA CONTEST

I can't account for those ridiculous Tony Awards, but when it first arrived, CATS was unlike anything ever seen on stage before, so its success was not a surprise to me. The length of its run was, however. I would have thought maybe three years for a gimmicky show like this, but there was obviously something there that appealed to a great many people. I enjoyed the first hour and then the whole concept got tedious and wore out its welcome fast. STARLIGHT EXPRESS, another of Lloyd Webber's never-seen-this-on-a-stage-before shows, had the unprofitable two year run that I expected CATS to have.

The show I thought should have been a monster hit was that revival of THE WOMEN that we've talked about before. It had more stars than there are in the heavens, a beautiful and expensive production, a bitchy, catty and hilarious script, and superb performances. I couldn't believe that it closed shortly after I saw it. The Saturday matinee I attended was packed.

Later, on a talk show, Dorothy Loudon said she thought it failed because people came to it expecting it to be a musical, and were disappointed when it wasn't. With all the laughter present, though, I don't know how one could have STAYED disappointed, even if you DID think it was a musical.

Oh but DRMICHAELSHAYNE now the nightmare begins.  "Cats" is crawling its way across the country.  The local professional dinner theatre in Indy is presenting it!  :P

I will not say it will be bad - in fact my friend the lovely Karen is down front center - but my favorite part of the show was the music - with a synth and a set of trap drums - oh my!  ::)

And after this.....Aunt Linda will play Grizzabella and fat cousin Josh will do Rum Tum Tugger....I am afraid....I am VERY afraid.  :o

Two out-of-town tryouts that I saw in Toronto were going to be huge in NYC, or so I thought. These were Illya Darling, and Sugar. Neither was perfect, but each one seemed awfully close to getting it right. Maybe the changes were in the wrong direction, or maybe I was just a poor judge. But I surely was proved wrong. On the other hand, when I saw Mama Mia in Toronto, I said to everyone, "This will never fly in New York." (That's why I didn't follow up on the Fiddler bet, DHMattH.)

Have a good weekend, everyone. I'll be away from the computer for most it. And Archie, who continues to perk up, sends his greetings and thanks.

DR Jay -- My Architect sounds like a very interesting documentary, but frankly, you have me puzzled.  When did Vin Scully become part of the creme de la creme of the world of architecture from the latter half of the 20th century?

Aarggh.  Vincent Scully.

A brief bio:

Scully ranks among the most influential architectural historians of the 20th century.  He has shaped not only how we view the evolution of architecture in the twentieth century but also the course of that evolution itself. Combining the modes of historian and critic in unique and compelling ways--with an audience that reaches from students and scholars to professional architects and ardent amateurs--Scully has profoundly influenced the way architecture is thought about and made.

Vin Scully is a sportscaster.  My bad.

The play that I think should have been a hit that, as far as I know, has only had one production in a major venue is Peter Shaffer's GIFT OF THE GORGON.  It starred Michael Pennington and Judi Dench, was directed by Sir Peter Hall, premiered at Royal Shakespeare Company at the Barbican in London, had a West End transfer and has never really been heard from again.  I've never seen the play, merely read it.  It took Sam French forever to come out with an acting edition of it.  It is quite simply the BEST play I have read in the last ten years and it is a GREAT play.  I would kill to do the lead.  Why it has had no life beyond its initial production is quite beyond me.

Gee, Bruce, you won't even give us a time frame on the trivia question? Like the decade it was produced in?

Good grief!  The posts this morning are running slower than molasses.  I know the East Coast crowd can't still be in bed ferchristsakes, it is almost noon.  Hell, DR Tomovoz should up in a couple of hours, and it is the middle of the night in Australia.

I don't believe I have ever seen a show that I thought would be a smash hit, but was a flop instead.  I can think of any number of shows that qualify for that in reverse.  I suppose the closest I could come would be She Loves Me, which had a fairly successful revival, but still never became the classic that I think it should be.  Having done the show and directed the show, I have had an ongoing love affair with the show.  Actually it started back in the early 70s when I came across the OBC album in a "sale bin" in a Santa Rosa book store.  It was love at first listen.

The most wonderful non-hit I ever saw was Baby.

From that first duet, with Todd Graff and Liz Callaway considering what their baby might be like, I was in absolute ecstasy.  The female trio, I Want It All, was so wonderful, I thought "Wow.  It can't get better than this."  But of course Liz' rendition of The Story Goes On was the most thrilling performance of a new song I've ever seen on stage.  And the love songs: I think I Chose Right is the best love song to hit Broadway since the 1970's; And What If We Had Loved Like That fills me with such emotion, I can't speak of it.

If I go into the reasons I think it wasn't a hit, I'd be going in to some very controversial topics, so I'll just say that, among singers I know, the songs from Baby are performed more often than any other show of the past two decades.  In that sense, it's a hit - it's never been forgotten.

Now, speaking of forgotten...

I will not watch a remake of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, just like I won’t watch the remake of The Goodbye Girl.

Jay thank you for the interesting movie review.

LauraII your mother sounds like my mother.  I tried very hard, though I’m sure my children will say I didn’t succeed, not to criticize their cleaning efforts.  I would sneak back later & correct what wasn’t up to my standards.  Our older son moved home for a year and I would quietly rearrange the dishwasher after he put his dishes in.  After he left our younger son moved home.  One day when they were both here and the younger son had put his dishes in the dishwasher, the older son commented that I would just move them around.  And all that time I thought I was being so discreet. LOL-I stopped moving the dishes around after that.

I never saw BABY in NYC (sob, sob), but having done the show (played Alan two years ago), I certainly concur that it deserved to be a smash hit. Amazing the things that make it on Broadway and what falls by the wayside. I would have thought that this show would have been a theater party dream.

Hey, I was just trolling the net for some new smiley faces and came across the following:

What is Bandwidth?
Bandwidth is a measurement of how much data is transferred across the internet. Bandwidth usage is metered and priced, similar to your electric bill. Each time you post a link to a graphic on my site, and every time anyone views that graphic, the amount of bandwidth usage I am responsible for increases. The bandwidth used by this web site is not free.

Other WebMasters may also have to pay for their bandwidth. Taking bandwidth without asking permission is illegal, just as if you stole items from your neighbor's house. If you want to use graphics from any site, first acquire permission, then copy the graphic files to your own server, then link to the files on your own server, and pay for the bandwidth yourself.

I didn't know that linking to a smiley was stealing from the site.  Here's the site I found that on.

http://www.kurrus.net/bandwidth.html

Is this true?

I know I maybe should have put this on the tech board but I wanted everyone to see this.

Jane, Mummy's was a very nice restaurant! I enjoyed my meal very much. Mark had the scampi, and he thought it was just OK. Jeff had the meatballs in sauce and didn't care for it, I had the lamb and loved it...they thought my choice tasted like dog food. Hmmm.

Lots of great atmosphere...very Egyptian looking with authentic Egyptian music...well, actually Egyptian dance club music, but nice never the less.

Afterwards we painted the town red...and  I was in bed at 4:00am this morning! Ugh. I am very tired right now having only gotten about 4 hours of sleep...I am sure a nap will be in order today!

Well after five minutes....I think Mugami IS Miss Swan.  I like Debbie.  I think BK did some nice editing for a BIG COUNTRY effect at the beginning, and some nice editing where the contestants said one thing and the COWBOY U guys contradicted them.

And they were riding tall in the saddle--until the blister broke!  LOL!  :)  :D

Speaking of the ever-gorgeous Van Williams, remember that DICK VAN DYKE SHOW episode where he played Clark Rice ("No Rice at My Wedding" was the title), a very appealing and charismatic army hunk whom Laura was very attracted to. I still have visions of Van's muscular physique about to pop out of that army uniform they had him in.

I was HEARTSICK when THE GREEN HORNET lasted only a single season.

Yes, BABY should have been a hit.  I saw a college production at Western Washington University and a local community production here in Olympia and both were fantastic.  I love the CD and would love to hear what changes Maltby and Shire have since made for the show.  I don’t know why it wasn’t a hit.  Maybe it’s just a small show that needs to be in a small (meaning not ON Broadway) theater.

For the first time ever, I has answered the Unseemly Trivia Contest!  However, when I sent my answers to Bruce, I called it the Unseemly Trivia "Question".  I hope that that doesn't disqualify me! :-\

Well, I must go to work (to make up hours so that I don't have to use vacation time) then I have to usher for Kate Clinton's performance tonight.  I'll be out and about the rest of the day and won't even be back home until late tonight.  Post away!

I will also tell you that I never understood how CATS was such a big hit. The plot if there was one dealt with people auditioning for a place in heaven.

So that’s what the plot was about?  We saw that as a family, a family of cat lovers, and truly disliked the play.  It was such a disappointment after the hype.

I have to say that Cats lost it's charm for me about 15 minutes into the play.

It holds the record for the only show I started looking at my watch and wondering, "How much longer?".  I don't think I would ever want to go see it again.

I don't own the DVD and if someone gave it to me, I think I would either sneak it back to the store for an exchange or it would collect a lot of dust because I would never crack the wrapper.

Hey all. Well I'm glad I didn't win that one item on ebay yesterday. Because the same seller put up 2 more identical. So I should be able to get one of them. I am surprised though because the seller has not responded to my emails asking if they would sell me the item. And they have not responded to my request for an invoice. With 99% positive feedback, don't most sellers want to get paid :)

(oh and this purchase does not count for you guys hitting me, cause it was what I wanted yesterday :))

"Merrily We Roll Along" was wonderful on its first OC album and when I saw it produced by a theatre group (non-professional) specifically formed for the event, it was wonderful. The audience could not have all known the CD and no one seemed perplexed by the show at all. I saw it a few years back performed by a University theare group and it did not work as well - production and actors were not as good either.
Musically  "Merrily" is a gem. The whole idea of the named sweatshirts etc used when the were trying to get things right on Brodway, looks silly.  When I first saw it there were no problems with character identification. I like the other cast recordings but I still prefer the original and its book.
"Cats"  I saw twice (yes, by choice) in London and once here. The London production was great as were the audiences who probably knew the poems well (as Australians of my generation would too). I have always viewed the show as an entertainment and not as a book musical. No way could "Cats" have succeeded for so long if it were not entertaining.

I just don't get why the seller hasn't responded. I would rather she just sell me the missing charm (which they usually don't mind doing) as opposed to my having to bid again. PLUS DOESN'T SHE WANT HER MONEY. They always send the invoices withing minutes.

The coldest weather I have ever been in was -20 degrees, with the wind chill factor.  Echo was still a very active puppy and needed her exercise.  On Fridays I would meet my friends with their dogs in a park.  It took me about half an hour to get dressed.  Since I wear sunglasses, my face was completely covered.  My friends showed up in shifts so Echo and I were out walking, she was running, for about two hours.  The following year the neighbor got an active dog Echo’s age.  On cold winter days we would just take the dogs to each others houses to play and I used the treadmill.

In a short while, I will be heading to the Mark Taper Forum at the Los Angeles Music Center to catch the matinee of Like Jazz, a new entertainment with music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman and book by Larry Gelbart.  Gordon Davidson directs and Patricia Birch choreographs.  Amongst the performers are Patti Austin and Lillias White.

I will hang around the Music Center after the performance, as this evening I will be at the Walt Disney Concert Hall to hear the Los Angeles Philharmonic play an all-Berlioz program consisting of:  Les nuits d’été, Le chant des Bretons, Op. 13, No. 5, La mort d'Ophelie and Romeo and Juliet (excerpts.)  Esa-Pekka Salonen will conduct and mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter will be the vocal soloist.  I will be seated in the choral benches, behind the orchestra, providing me a full frontal view of Mr. Salonen as he conducts.  This should be interesting!

No falling asleep for me...I was the designated driver and I did have one or two drinks early in the evening (Vodka and Cranberrie juice) but it was water and coffee after that...and the coffee certainly kept me awake...unfortunately, even after I was home in bed.

Salem is about a 45 to 55 minute drive from Portland.

I did not notice any vegaterian dishes at Mummy's, but I might have overlooked them. The menu was not huge...about 6 or seven choices...and a bit spendy...not a whole lot of food, although I was full afterwards. It was a nice, different experience.

OMG, I am having a good laugh.  I always check seller's feedback (on ebay) before buying anything.  Anyhow, I must say I find it extremely odd that the seller has not contacted me (it's been 26hrs+) ... I've sent 2 emails.

So I go to read the seller's feedback. And 98% are raves. But the 6 negatives are killers. The guy (the seller) comments on the comments. And you would not believe what he is saying.  Let's just say he's using words like "jerk, liar" and those were the nice ones :)

I am stunned that anyone would use that language. I get that negative feedback can hurt a seller. But my gosh, he should use his brain. He should take the high road and explain in a dignified manner.

I would pay and just forget about the 3rd charm. But I don't know how much to pay for shipping (since I bought two).  OMG, I hope he doesn't yell at me :)

If I look at something and they have two paragraphs of description and SIX paragraphs of rules, I skip the item.....  If it weren't for buyers, EBAY would be nothing.  Some sellers are a bit ....  well ... nuts!   ;)

Oh, my goodness, Jennifer.  I've never seen any reply from a seller like that!  When I buy stuff (I've never sold anything), I never worry about how long something takes to get to me...as long as I eventually get it.

I've never left negative feedback and I hope I never have to.  The couple of times that I've been stiffed, the sellers became "Not a registered user" and I couldn't leave feedback.  Both were items that my niece wanted and the sellers had decent feedback.  One was a couple of pictures of actresses that she liked (only $18) and the other was a complete season of Xena episodes that she paid $130 for--freakin' big ouch! :'(  I don't remember the details, but we couldn't do anything through eBay to get her money back.  I felt really bad about it and paid her half so that she didn't lose the whole $130.  I REALLY hope that that never happens again.

Well, the Ray Court show today was somewhat lack and luster, certainly a bad time to go hiking the entry price up to fifteen bucks.  Mr. Kimmel and I did not rendezvous till sometime after eleven, because whilst I was roaming the aging stars room awaiting his arrival, he was gamboling in the memorabilia rooms.

As for stars, ho and hum, not much to be seen, though Luciana Paluzzi was still striking and Howard Keel look hale and heart.  The biggest crowd-drawer seemed to be Kate Jackson and Margot Kidder seem to be doing a brisk biz as well, though I'm not sure who the guy in the Superman suit with the gap-toothed grin was and whether he was under the delusion that he resembled Christopher Reeve.  The really scary thing for me was I had no idea who any of the younger "celebrities" were.

While there were lots of wonderful, over-priced posters and memorabilia goodies (Great huge foreign posters of ELIZABETH & ESSEX and LORNA DOONE, which were beautiful artwork.  A smaller exquisite ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD was going for $17, 000 dollars.  I didn't dare ask the price of the others), it was a lean day for me...just some soundtracks... Rozsa's MOONFLEET; Steiner's ADVENTURES OF DON JUAN & HELEN OF TROY.  Bruce bought some sheet music and some art which I'm sure he will tell you about and an addition to his Li'l Abner collection.  He also had a very underdone hamburger or half of one, before they brought him a new one as he had ordered -- medium well.  Also, while at lunch, he told Frank Gorshin to shut up.  Company was pleasant and fun; but as far as the show, the thrill is gone...

Yes, Baby seemed a little small for Broadway.  It had rounded curtains and a film of sperm and egg was shown on these - hardly the spectacle audiences expected from a Broadway show.

But I've two other theories, and they're controversial.

Abortion is a topic that makes a lot of people sit rigidly and clench their teeth.  It was an even bigger issue on the national political scene 20 years ago than it is today.  Baby had the balls to have one couple consider abortion.  That means that a certain percentage of the audience was going to find the show distasteful.

Homosexuals make up a large section of the musical-attending public, and, at the time Baby opened, La Cage Aux Folles was a big hit you could take your gay uncle to.  I hope it doesn't offend anyone to point out that childbirth is not something many homosexuals have personal first-hand experience with.  Sure, there are many execeptions, but Baby depicted an (blessed) event or three that wasn't easily related to by a segment of the musical-going population.

Plus, the book isn't very good.

All right, I'm back from a wild goose chase.  May I just say that there is now not time of the day or the evening that one can get on any freeway in this city and actually go a decent speed.  Who are these idiots and where are they going on a Saturday at two?  It's just incomprehensible.

Now, let us immediately put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let us break out the cheese slices and ham chunks, let us dance the hora and the hully gully, because we've got us a birthday to celebrate.   Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, today is dear reader Noel's actual birthday day.  So, let us all give him a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer - on the count of three of the earl of twelve: One, two, three - HAPPY BIRTHDAY NOEL!

Also, rather quietly, we just passed 21,000 posts.  Pretty damned good if you ask me.

Also, where in tarnation IS everyone?  What is this, the weekend?  People think they can cavort and play instead of cavorting and playing right here.  Bitch-slapping will be the order of the day (let me know if you want fries with your bitch-slap).

Good late afternoon/early evening everyone!

I have just finished cleaning up for the most God-awful meal I have ever made.  I got the recipe in my works monthly newsletter and while it sounded good on paper, it was just ghastly.  IMHO. It was called “Rice noodles with Tofu and Bok Choy”.  I’d never had anything with rice noodles or tofu and believe me, I never will again.  Bluck.

My Mom said she liked and ate the whole plateful but I wonder if she really did like it or just said so.  I was all for giving the whole mess to the dogs and going out to get a burger.  They still managed to get the most of it.  There was no point in making leftovers out of it.

[move=diagonal ,scroll,6,transparent,100%]Happy Birthday, Noel!   :)  :)  :) [/move]

I'm sorry but I don't feel comfortable in using the smileys from the other board anymore so I'll just have to be creative with what is available on this board from now on.  I don't want to steal.

I'm starting to get excited about going to see JC:SS.  I so love to go see live theater.

Actually many of the sellers are absolutely wonderful. And I've never actually spoken to this guy, so I can't actually say if he's rude.  It's just so weird that he doesn't respond (when he's been putting up new auctions). I think I will just pay for the 2 I bought and assume the shipping is what I think it is (it says $2 and that he combines shipping, and it can't be more expensive to send 2 charms than to send 1).  But I will say I was in shock when I read the 6 negative comments (he has hundreds of positive ones). I'm thinking if you just pay, and don't email that you won't have problems with him. And he's located in ottawa, so I should get my stuff fast!

The two sellers I dealt with this week, were unbelievably kind and went out of their way to help me. They wrote back immediately, and were wonderful to deal with.

The funny thing is after I said I wouldn't buy any more charms on ebay, my mom wants me to look for something for her :)

I will post more of his negative comments, just because it's so funny.  But I had NO idea that you weren't protected by ebay if someone cheats you. I don't get it. If you pay by credit card, can't you just refuse to pay?  Also, did these people have lots of positive feedback? Like I said, I only buy from people with lots of positive feedback (not that I buy much).

Okay how bizarre is this.  As I'm typing this, and preparing to pay through paypal. I get two automated messages from "the seller" about yesterday morning's auctions. Weird. Why would his system send me this now?  Who knows maybe he/she is online now and will read my messages.

This message was signed "tina". But I cannot imagine any woman talking the way I see in the negative feedback :)  (plus the people called him a him).

LOL DRJENNIFER - I got a NEGATIVE feedback as a buyer when I gave a NEUTRAL feedback after waiting 4 weeks to get my item and then not getting it until I had emailed three times!

I know there are delays (like mail) that might be out of their control. But I think they should try to treat the buyers in a kind manner.  You shouldn't have to wait 4 weeks. And they should understand that.

That said, while "the seller" did not answer my 3 emails, I'm thinking it was ebay's fault that the automated message is only appearing in my email today (31 hours after the end of the auction). It says that the message was sent by ebays automated service. I will email them about that.

Okay here is one more of the negative feedbacks:

Buyers: Very rude seller must be a newbie or maybe a dork yes thats it. waste of time

Reply by seller: RUDE? YOU NEVER EMAILED ME, NOR HAVEU SENT PAYMENT, U HAVE BEEN REPORTED!

Follow-up by buyer: YOU HAVE A VERY FOWL MOUTH BUT I GUESS THAT NORMAL 4 CANADA SELLER

Noel writes: "But of course Liz' rendition of The Story Goes On was the most thrilling performance of a new song I've ever seen on stage."

I never saw the show and I've never heard a particularly good rendition of the song, but I must say that, even if I did hear a good rendition of the song I'd probably still hate it. The story may go on, yes, but so in hell does the song!

There used to be a woman who sang this song at Eighty Eights every single Saturday night. After about the 10th Saturday, I turned to my partner Tom and said, "There's nothing like hearing a song about procreation in a room with a hundred other gay people . . ."    ::)

I thought all the smilies from clicksmiles were free.

And DR Jane: Those are all the responses from the same seller. I have not bought anything else from ebay. Those are from the 2 charms I bought on Friday.  After reading those comments, I decided to pass on the Y&R charm (and it is sideways which i don't like).

But I think it would be easy to become addicted, which is why I said you all should hit me if I buy anything else.  I will go for my mom (if she really needs what she asked for). But I'm done I think for the next few months.

I was so pleased in the production of BABY that I did that "Patterns" had been returned to the score. I love the song and found it very moving, and my character had his response to it in the next scene with "Easier to Love."

DR Danise, why aren't you comfortable using the smilies?

If you go back a page or two you see the post I made about what I found on that one smile page. I didn't realize it could be considered stealing and I know the click smile site didn't say anything about not doing it but I'd rather err on the side of caution.

First off...Happy Natal Anniversary, Noel!  (The only other person I know named "Noel" was born on Christmas Day...which really sucks as far as presents are concerned.)

Second off...the Significant Other, a few friends, and myself joined a whole buncha children, parents and assorted Friends of Dorothy for Sing-a-long Wizard of Oz last night, and it was pretty darned entertaining.  It would've been even more so, if my dinner hadn't started a major skirmish in my innards, which not only compromised the show, but kept me up most of the night in gastric distress.  The moral: never order Lobster in the Midwest.

Third off...I finished watching The Adventures of Captain Marvel earlier today.  Now, I'm not an expert on the serials, but I have seen a good many of them, and this one really is the best one I've ever seen.  My previous favorite was Jungle Girl, which was supposedly based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel of the same name.  It isn't though.

Fourth off...what the hell is up with Lyle Waggoner?  I've been catching repeats of The Carol Burnett Show of late, and he's never on it.

I did see that message. But for some reason I did not read your last line (don't know why). Hence my utter confusion, when you started saying you didn't want to post smilies anymore.

I do agree with what Jrand wrote.  Clicksmilies has info about how to copy their smilies. Why would they do that if they didn't want us to use them?

Is the topic of the day still our favorite musicals that we thought should have been huge successes? (the topics from the past two days have merged into one big blur for me :) ).

Well, I have seen shows that I have truly loved.  But I'm not sure I would have expected them to be huge successes.  Sometimes it's odd what is a huge success. Cats.  Aida.

Three musicals which I loved, but which were not very successful are: MTC's The Wild Party, Jane Eyre, and Side Show.  I found them all thrilling and wonderful.  I think in the case of TWP, they sold quite well off-broadway, but because of the NY Times, never transferred and had the opportunity to see if Bway audiences would have liked it.  As for JE, sometimes I wonder why more people didn't want to see it (well known title). I think those who saw it liked it.  It's interesting how people seem to like to see "the hit shows". I mean why is Wicked selling so well this season?  As for Side Show, I think someone mentioned the other day, that the topic of siamese twins is not a good one.  But it was truly an exceptional show. I went in expecting nothing, and I was blown away, by one of the best performances (alice & emily) that i have ever seen. I truly wanted them to win & share the Tony that year. They were that good.

I have been thinking about Baby for the past hour or so. I love that cast recording so much. (I was kind of brought up on it.) I would really love to see it staged. To tell you the truth, I'd prefer to be in it. I want to play Lizzie!

Short story: My mom never got to see Baby during its run, but she went to the New York Public Library, where they have the show archives on tape. She had some reason to see the video, so they let her view it. That must've been fun for her! :)

What are the first cast recordings/albums/showtunes to which you were exposed (as far back as you can remember)? I remember my mom singing "It's Not Too Late" from Romance, Romance when I was really young. Also, she and my aunt and uncle (her sis and bro) would put on little shows over Thanksgiving. We have a tape of them filmed during Thanksgiving 1987 where they sang "Matchmaker" and "You Gotta Have a Gimmick" among other songs. I made my mini-debut babbling in my mother's arms as she sang "Home." I thank God that my mom introduced me to showtunes and musical theatre as a young child. I don't know where I would be without it!!

I was gonna write about it tomorrow, but I'm afraid the Pogue is correct - kinda dullsville, man.  Mamie looked fine, Dwayne Hickman looked amazingly good for someone who must be at least in his late sixties.  Kate J. looks like she's had some work done.  Frank Gorshin is one of the most crotchety-looking men who ever lived (and I didn't REALLY say shut up to him - well, I did say shut up, but I didn't know it was him - he was interrupting our waitress who was trying to take our order).  I'll tell you who looked incredible - former playmate of the year Kathy Showers.  She's probably forty-five now and hasn't done anything to herself and she looks splendidly splendid.  On the other hand, Beverly D'Angelo looks pretty blowsy.  On the other hand Kim Darby looks like a little spinster librarian.  On the other hand, Luciana Paluzzi looks pretty good.  I did pick up one piece of original art, what they call a "maquette" - in this case, an original watercolor or goache painting used for the Italian poster of Pasolini's The Decameron.  I don't like the film or Mr. Pasolini, but the art is nice and these things never come up.  That, coupled with the fact that it was so cheap I couldn't pass it up, made it a no-brainer.  I also got an issue of Life Magazine with the most amazing Li'l Abner cover by Al Capp - spectacular.

Just curious 1). if this is the artwork that was used on the Image dvd of THE DECAMERON?; 2).  what don't you like about the film?; 3).  You don't like Pasolini! ? ! ?   Not even his poetry?  Not even THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ST. MATTHEW? ? ?

Nope, I've just never cottoned to Mr. Pasolini - I haven't actually seen all that much - The Decameron and Arabian Nights and as much as I could stomach of Salo - truly the most vile piece of cinema ever filmed and one that in my opinion should be burned.

I don't think this art was used on the Image DVD, but I can't really remember it that well.  This was used on the large Italian original release posters.

I've seen most of Pasolini's work - quite a bit of it while I was in college - and yet, I find PORCILE to be more troublesome than SALO, but, I also cannot recommend SALO to any uniformed viewers.  It is a rough, rough, tough movie to sit through.

I have been watching Space Family Robinson aka Lost in Space. The earlier episodes are quite good and are nothing like the later episodes with walking and talking vegetables. It was nice to see the original pilot that did not have the robot or doctor smith. The footage from the original pilot was reused in subsequent episodes quite seemlessly.

BK, we watched Cowboy U and enjoyed it.  It wasn't mean-spirited and snarky like so many of those reality (really non-reality) shows.  We even watched the two following episodes and now are sort of hooked.  How much longer does this thing run?  We can see why you loved Megumi...made-to-order comic relief ("I hope I'm going to be reimbursed for that."  "I promised my mother I wouldn't get hurt.")  We saw some of the BK touches you mentioned and thought we recognized some others distinctly Kimmelian.

Oh, we MUST play Scrabble - we can play on my Franklin Mint set, which I've never used.  Cowboy U is a total of eight episodes, the first and last of which are an hour - the others run a half-hour.  I've never seen so many commercials in my life.  We actually took out some even more annoying Megumi stuff which I loved, because the network just didn't care for her - that's what I meant when I said some of the "teeth" of the first show was gone.

How fun! We should. Of course, you could come watch at my house if you wanted to drive over. It wouldn't take TOO long. Hey, I'll cook dinner!

Matt - if we still had the house in Myrtle Beach, I'd be there in a trice!

Planet is coming in a new SE with enhanced transfer.  Should be great.

PLANET arrives on what has got to be one of the biggest dvd release dates I've ever seen!

That's the day of the Warner Award Winners (RAIN MAN, MY FAIR LADY, MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, et al).

I could always visit my relatives in Mooresville. . .
or my relatives in Columbia. . .
OR. . .use my connection to stay in our old beach house for a week; the buyers have allotted my family up to three weeks a year, should we want it.

Goodness, what a quiet night here... almost too quiet if you ask me, which you probably didn't, but you may have, and how would I know if you had, so I'd best act as if you did even if it turns out you didn't (as is most likely), for to leave your possibly asked question unanswered would be just plain unseemly.

Watched Dr. Strangelove again a little while ago.  President Muffley's phone conversation with the Russian premier never fails to crack me up... comic genius!

PennyO - Wow, you really are in the middle of nowhere up there!  Enjoy your escape to civilization. :D

What are we waiting for?

As for the new PLANET/APES, I'll probably be content with the non-anamorphic for now. The film is a lot of fun, but as seldom as I'll play it, I don't need anything better right now. I'd rather upgrade MY FAIR LADY, for instance. That laserdisc boxed set takes up WAY too much room!

Ah ha, but placing a participial phrase at the end of the sentence like that does by rule modify the subject of the sentence (I) and not the direct object (movie). It would need to be right next to movie to modify it. At the end of the sentence with no noun next to it, it reverts to the subject.

Oh, I'm loving my Rozsa score to MOONFLEET.  Great main title theme.  I now must see the movie again...which is interesting with lots of Fritz Lang touches, and it is better than many originally thought it was, but still doesn't quite work as well as it should.  Something slightly off-kilter about it. Script, I think.  Also Fritz Lang did not like wide-screen.  He felt with it, he couldn't control where the audience should be looking...where is where he wanted them to look.  Still even Fritz Lang that doesn't quite work is more interesting than many directors at their peak form.

Well, of course. That HAS to be the #1 priority. But, just remember that Columbia is 90 miles away. Mooresville is 33 miles away. Something to think about.

I love Fritz Lang.  I have a region 2 of Moonfleet, which has an enhanced transfer, but it's still a transfer that could use some TLC.

I know the problem here: I HATE MARZIPAN.

Totally off topic: I have just an ex-student install XP on this computer (to replace Millenium). Should I be excited. At least the computer will now actually shut down properly and "boot" properly. The cost was significant - a barbeque lunch.
I was about to post that I didn't think TCB would be to comment on td's love of horses. I am so wrong. He is back. Welcome back TCB. Hope your Saturday excursion was a success.

I hope it doesn't offend anyone to point out that childbirth is not something many homosexuals have personal first-hand experience with.  Sure, there are many execeptions, but Baby depicted an (blessed) event or three that wasn't easily related to by a segment of the musical-going population.
DR Noel, I think you need to pay a bit more attention to what's going on around you.  Der Brucer and I have just moved all the way across the continent to be closer to his grandchildren, which certainly means that at some point he copulated heterosexually.  Conservative estimates put the number of gay men who are fathers at about ten percent, and the number of lesbians who are mothers is much much higher.  In fact, there are organizations for gay fathers with chapters nationwide, and when they march in the gay pride parades these groups are regularly among the most loudly cheered.

For that matter, again if you had been paying attention, you would find that a large percentage of the gay membership here at HHW is deeply committed to their families, as loving uncles.  In my experience, the gay community as a whole is just as committed to their families as the sampling we have here, making total nonsense of the entire "family values" rhetoric.

I hope I'm getting across to you that I found your post deeply offensive and ill-informed.  You owe many of us here an apology.

Fourth off...what the hell is up with Lyle Waggoner?  I've been catching repeats of The Carol Burnett Show of late, and he's never on it.
Waggoner left the show after something like the seventh season.  Also, a lot of times he was working off-screen as the show's announcer.  You might not be seeing him, but you're hearing that voice.

If I were to pick a musical that deserves more recognition that it's received, I'd go for Kat and the Kings.  It was the first show I ever saw in NYC, one that der Brucer and I had heard little about, and we got to see it because the tix were on sale at TKTS, at the very last minute because we'd gotten into town so late.

What we found was an interesting take on South Africa and apartheid.  It was consistently entertaining, tuneful, and funny while handling sobering material.  The show itself had been a hit in South Africa and London, but for some reason the New York critics weren't impressed.  What audience it found loved the show, cheering and swaying with the music, having a wonderful time, but it never found enough of an audience to make it work in NYC.

Which is really a shame, because it's story deserves to be seen and heard across the nation, and indeed worldwide.  Apartheid was the most egregious example of bigotry I can think of, and people really do need to be confronted with it's destructive power.  Unfortunately, because the show was not a hit on Broadway, it hasn't received much of an audience elsewhere.

I understand it's being remounted in London.  I wish der Brucer and I could get there to see it again.  I'd dance in the aisles this time!

Well, given our past days, pretty slow day today.  But who cares - what was here was cherce and that's all that matters.  You've spoiled me, that's all.  New notes up in half-hour, so if you want to have a mini-frenzy prior to that then do so.  I'm not holding my breath.  Why should I?  When was the last time my breath held me?  My breath is very aloof.  Oooh, a Jerry Lewis word.  Okay, on the count of three everybody say "aloof" in their best Jerry voice: One, two, three - ALOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFLADYYYYYYY.
