Well, you've read the notes, the notes were dressed to the nines and also the sevens, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're pondering ranch dressing in New York and they are laughing, I tell you, laughing.

And the word of the day is: RECUSANT!

First post!! Posting from AGYG rehearsal! I blame Jose

And a very happy haineshisway.com birthday to former dear reader Hisaka.

TOD:
CD: BR6, the group that BK recently discovered, with their superior (IMHO) to Gershwin/Jobim album, Rio A Cappella.
DVD: a really excellent documentary (coming soon to PBS, I think) called Talmud. I must say that I have had the pleasure of reviewing some truly exceptional documentaries recently, after the execrable Beatles thing I had to sit through. Not just this, but Edi's S&V, and a brilliant trilogy on Buddhism that I loved, which has one of the dreamiest soundtracks ever.

We have had a week of no (count them) developments on remodeling, due to an electrician's other commitments. Oy.
-
DR Jeanne - when I first looked at this house, I knew the drywall would have to come out of the room I'm working on. It smelled of mold and mildew and I could see where there had been water damage. I ripped out the carpet immediately, but put off this part of it because I wasn't ready to hire someone to do it. Now that I'm really trying to save $$ I knew I wasn't going to hire someone to do it so....I thought what the heck and dove in. It's been fun.
-
TOD:
cd, of course is "Betcha Bottom Dollar" - The Puppini Sisters
I didn't watch a dvd tonight, instead I opted for Jeff Goldblum in PITTSBURGH on Starz on Demand.
Not exactly what I expected, it's more on the line of GUFFMAN, BEST IN SHOW and A MIGHTY WIND, but a breezy pleasant experience.
It was good to see Pittsburgh itself looking so lovely.
As for the production of THE MUSIC MAN which brought Jeff back to the 'burgh, well, the film is brutally honest with it.

I'm hoping my electrician remembers to call me Monday night so we can make arrangements for Tuesday.

Well, I better get some sleep. Night.

Good Evening/Morning!
bk - Which studios on 43rd? The new-ish ones between 8th and 9th? -Just curious.

What a fine day yesterday turned out to be (what's this? OPTIMISM from DR Jason??), despite having allergy issues...
After I weighed in at Weight Watchers (I lost 2 lbs. this week, thankyouverymuch), I went to Ricky's NYC, a great little health and beauty supply/novelty/stage makeup shop on Broadway, and picked up a couple of bars of my new favorite soap. Then I treated myself to a loverly lunch of turkey meatloaf, brown gravy and seasoned waffle fries from the West Way Diner (none of which I was able to taste, unfortunately), where I was able to finish "Gulliver's Travels" and lay it to rest at last. After that, I ventured over to Virgin Records, where I walked out without having spent a penny (no small feat), and then walked over to Barnes and Noble, where I picked up their Classics Editions of "Pride and Prejudice" and "Treasure Island." Then, I headed across the street to Garrett's, where I picked up a bag of their fantabulous CaramelCrisp popcorn and then headed to the theatre, where I found out that I finally have a telephone line in the dowstairs lounge, which allows me to use my credit card machine! It only took 4 years, but AVENUE Q now has a proper credit card machine at the main merchandise booth. HUZZAH! By having that phone line installed, I now have at least 20-30 minutes freed up during the second act, which is a great relief. I'm now 40 pages into "Jane Eyre" and lemme tell you - it's a far easier read than "Gulliver's Travels."
So, a pretty good day after all...
-
And, to top it all off, that state of Iowa now recognizes that same-sex marriages are permissable under their state's constitution's guarantee of equal treatment.
Good for them!!

Yes I know, goodbye for now,
How long? ~ a year, a day?
Yes I love you, yes you're with me,
here now, next to me, and worlds away!
See I free you, and I'll see you when I see you,
fine, OK?
Goodbye for now, again
Goodbye until whenever then
We're free, that's what we said we'd be,
at leave to come an' go, you as well as I,
somehow each "hello" makes it worth "goodbye" for now!
Goodbye for now, again
Goodbye until whenever then
We're free, that's what we said we'd be,

Goodbye . . . hmm . . . goodbye

When I go to the theatre I don't go expecting to dislike the show. I WANT to like it. I love the theatre, it can be a magical place and I go hoping for the best. I say all this because last night I went to see Walmartopia, a new "musical" about how Wal-Mart is taking over America. It's two hours of my life that I can't get back (you see where I'm going with this). I really wanted to like the show but there is so little about that I can praise. Granted, it's not as bad as Perfect Crime (the gold standard for bad) but it just doesn't work. There is so much wrong with the show on so many levels (script, music, performances, direction) that I end up sounding like a chat board ranter and I don't want to do that.
If executives from Wal-Mart worried about this show and the effect on the reputation of the store they have nothing to worry about. It's bad enough that people will just dismiss it as agit-prop politcal theatre. I remember this show being one of the hits of last year's Fringe Festival (I didn't see it then) but for the life of me I can't figure out why. The book is dreadful. It's one cliche after another. There is little truth or honesty in what's being presented (aside from the facts they present about Wal-Mart). The music and lyrics are trite and at times even embarrassing. What's even more disappointing is when I got home I read the Playbill (the theatre was too dark to be able to read much) and I was mistaken in thinking this was a group of amateurs or semi-professionals taking a jump to the Off-Broadway level. There are people in this show with real credits. The audience was packed with friends and supporters so the response was strong but my friend and I left shaking our heads. I can't imagine this having any kind of a run, especially after it opens and critics have their say. I saw Linda Winer (the critic from Newsday) and Roma Torre (from NY1 News) in the audience. I will be interested to hear what they have to say. I respect their opinions (even when we disagree) and I can't imagine either one will have much good to say about the show.

Thank you DR SambaMan

I will be on the train to Long Island in about 4 hours. I expect I will be errant and truant most of the weekend. We have a party tomorrow, a barbeque on Sunday and a train trip back to the city on Monday along with visiting and sleeping late. The computer on Long Island is old and slow and it's difficult to catch up on posts while I'm out there so it's easier just to wait until Monday evening or Tuesday morning.

OK. I did take the photograph that was used.

This is truly not directed at anyone today, but just a general thought that's been on my mind as I prepare to subject my own work to theater criticism, and as I read critques of Skip's work on Herringbone (which was ecstatic for the most part) and for his one-act at 59E59 (generally quite pleasant for Skip, with one bitchy exception).
All of us prefer enjoying something we see in the theater rather than hating it. But the irony is that it is more interesting to write about, and also more interesting to read about, something a person really hated than something a person really loved. Somehow, and this seems to be universal, whether they be critics, chatters or just folks, people are more inclined to say "Wow, so-and-so should be a critic" after thy've wittily or cleverly or pointedly pointed out the flaws in something rather than its virtues. My point: we ARE more interesting when we are being negative rather than positive, especially but not only when it comes to critquing works of art or that aspire to art.
End of theory. If I'm wrong,. I hope something will enthusiastically pull apart what i said. :) I'd like to be wrong about this, but I think it pervades theater criticism. Skip used to be a critic and one day his editor told him: It's easy to be bitchy, it's difficult to give specific praise and to give the true proportions of a performance.

A hit at the Fringe - well, you see... how was it a hit at the Fringe? People on chat boards saying so? Winning a Fringe "award"? I'll bet there were better shows in the Fringe that got no attention because they didn't have people going on the boards to do what they do and their friends and supporters (perhaps the same people who were there last night) to whoop it up for them. If it's as you say, and if the reviews are what you suspect, the producers will find out just how important being a "hit" at the Fringe is. Any show that calls itself Walmartopia is looking for trouble, especially after Jewtopia.

Fred, I think you're right about criticism. When I love something, it's easy to gush about it and forget specifics just going on about how wonderful something was. When it's bad I think it's easier to write about because you, perhaps, see the flaws and can say this didn't work and maybe if they tried this it would have been better, etc., etc., etc. I do think it's just as important to praise good work in an intelligent way so that people see why you liked it, not just that you're a committed fan (not that there is anything wrong with being a committed fan) and to dissect bad work to make sense of the problems. I try to do that, and don't always succeed but your point is well taken.

DR FJL, I think your theory is well-reasoned and sound.

I can only offer my perspective and to be specific about Ben's comments of today:
I had no problem with Ben's comments today, because, as he stated, he is a positive person who goes into shows to like them. I didn't enjoy what he said today more than when he loves a show - I just read his comments and take them for what they are - comments. If he'd loved it, I wouldn't have skipped the post or thought "That would have been more fun if he'd hated it." :)
People on chat boards I have a major problem with, and it's why I won't go near the boards once we open here. I don't really need to read a nineteen-year-old wannabe actor's post about how wonderful Slammer! is and how it's one of the best Fringe shows. I don't need to read people with agendas posting both bad AND good reviews - bad for the competition, good for their own (it happens every single day). I don't need to read the posts of people who are paid to post (it happens every single day). For example, I'm not paranoid in thinking that a couple of people on a specific chat board are just counting the days until we open so they can trash a show they will not be seeing. How do I know I'm not paranoid? Because they've already begun doing it.
As for real paid critics working for the majors, well, you take your chances and you get what you get. I try not to read any of it, but if I HAVE to read, I try to read the positive ones :) Some professional critics are shocking - they'll love absolute crap and they'll trash decent and/or good shows. It's less harmful these days than it was (the trashing) but it doesn't make it any more fun to read. I get no enjoyment out of reading a critic take apart a show, just as I get no enjoyment of a critic loving a show.

TAP. Your troubles away.

DR FJL, I know it's hard to believe given some of my bitchy comments about things I've seen, but I believe there are two sides to theatre criticism: when a show plays in previews - whether it's in New York or Boston or Seattle - the reviews should be constructive since it's already been defined as a work in progress and the writers want opinions on where they are with it; when a show has officially opened, with whatever fixes or definitive conditions its author(s) choose to give it, it's fair game.
In the case of my opinions on the two Fringe shows I saw this month, I apologize for neither: both were brought into a Festival situation as examples of their creators' work, with no "preview" or "in progress" attitude about them. One of them BUKOWSICAL! had a good cast and a lot of a good score but but I didn't like its length, a lot of its lyrics, or its sloppy staging. PB&J had a performance by a friend who acquitted himself respectably in a cast of amateurs (in a city of professional actors!), direction by a novice, and a script by someone who couldn't decide what the play should be.

Well, sorry to disappoint you, DR td. I had kind of been going along with what I thought was a joke. The truth is, I never really intended to memorize it for performance. I mean, I do love the song, and love to listen to it, but I think it would be really difficult to pull off. For me, anyway. :P
Still, I suppose it might be an interesting mental exercise.

Since Murder At Hollywood High will not be "officially" going up for preorder (on the Kritzerland site, where all the books will be available - no more separate website for each book) until late next week, I thought I'd just give everyone here who cares a head start - because the first twenty-five people who order will definitely be getting something special with their orders. Books will ship upon my return or sooner (I may have someone deal with the shipping as soon as they arrive). The ONLY place to get a signed book is at Kritzerland or here - I will do only one signing this time and that's at my usual first signing place, Bookfellows, but that won't be until mid-November.
So, if you'd like to be one of the first to get it (I only sign the hardcovers), then you may preorder right this very minute - the hardcover is $24 (it's close to $28 elsewhere) plus $5 for Priority shipping, for a total of $29. Payment, as always, can be made to kritzerland@adelphia.net. Here's a description of the book as it appears on the dust jacket flap:
Teenager Adriana Hofstetter is quite possibly one of a kind. She hates all things "now"-including MySpace, cell phones, and anything trendy-and she has no use for partying, getting wasted or being stupid. She dresses in clothes from her favorite decades-the 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s-much to the derision of her fellow students at Hollywood High, who think she is a joke. She's on her way to becoming the star of her journalism class. Her teachers adore her, just as much as her fellow students abhor her. She has one loyal and true friend, Billy Feldman, who is as much of an outsider as she is. She has a mother who listens to Pink Floyd, Cream, and Isaac Hayes at ear splitting levels, a peculiar cat named Furball, and an ancient, ineffectual computer that crashes if she happens to glance in its direction.
Then, one day, someone from Hollywood High is found murdered. A suspect is arrested and charged. And Adriana Hofstetter finds herself forced to become a pint-sized amateur sleuth, who, in the guise of doing a story for the school newspaper, must put all her journalism lessons to use in order to solve a murder she knows the accused didn't commit.
Murder at Hollywood High is a very funny, suspenseful mystery, replete with colorful Los Angeles locales, disbelieving detectives, suspects lurking around every locker, and a fifteen-year-old heroine who is off-the-wall, endearing and not to be messed with.
-
Who will be the first to order? Who will the lucky twenty-five be? Stay tuned.

DR Ginny...moving is not fun! [Just ask DR Edisaurus].
***COPING VIBES*** to all involved!
It's getting a little more fun now that things are starting to fall into place. But I keep running into things I hadn't thought of---services like cable that need to be moved...where will I have my car serviced...should I get the cats identity chips in case they get loose )they are all indoor cats) and if so, before the move, when they'll be less traumatized...but they would be registered in a different county...and on and on.
And our new tentant told us about her horrible roach problem---we have never had roach problems in our house---and what should I see last night when I walked into the room filled with her stuff? A baby roach!
This sort of stuff keeps me awake at night.
I woke up at 5AM and was still worried about Freddy(ie), too! I hope he shows himself soon!
-
I thought it would be easy to move the cable service, especially since the new house is already wired. I figured they would cut it off at the old house and then we'd hook our cable box up at the new house, they'd turn off the service, and ta-da!
No.
I can't call them to change to service over until after we move. Then and only then can I schedule an appointment to get hooked up a the new place. I can't schedule it in advance unless I start a whole new service, with deposits on several things--hi def, etc. that amounts to over $100...when I already have these services now.
Comcast is STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!
-
Starfighter first day rehearsal vibes to FJL and Skip! We're looking forward to seeing the show!
-
As much as I dislike Time-Warner Cable of New York City one of the things they promote is "make sure your cable moves when you do" They have programs in place where all you have to do is what DR Edisaurus thought, call, let them know the date you're moving, plug in the box and presto, you have cable.
Hmm...maybe they aren't as bad as I thought
No....they are!!!
I think (IIRC) that cable providers are at the top of the list for utilities people love to hate.
-
Good morning!
I rained again later last night somewhat heavier than the sprinkling we had had in the early evening. Things did feel a bit cooler and fresher outside this morning, but it's still going to get to 90 today.
-
I can't say anything negative about Time-Warner ehre in Charlotte. It's rarely faulty, and when it is, they come right out and deal with problems. When the power was down a few weeks ago, they adjusted the bill for two days of service lost. I can't complain about that!

Thanks, DR Singdaw. I'm not too involved, just need to make sure my Pontiac Vibe is available. It's the only vehicle in our family that can be used to transport furniture.

My point: we ARE more interesting when we are being negative rather than positive, especially but not only when it comes to critquing works of art or that aspire to art.
It's easy to be bitchy, it's difficult to give specific praise and to give the true proportions of a performance.
FJL, I think you're quite correct that it's easier to write about what we DON'T like than what we DO. It's easier to be specific. It's interesting to me that you bring this up today because a variation on this theme has been on my mind lately. When I read criticism--good, constructive criticism now, not name-calling or mean-spiritedness--such as DR BEN's fine post earlier today, I've been actually CHEERING! I was about to reply to BEN's post, then didn't because I thought it might be misunderstood. But since you bring up this issue, I will say it now: I am THRILLED to hear good criticism because I am oh so tired of hearing the platitudes that pass today as praise and support. I'm not referring to theatre criticism specifically, but just praise in general.
Long ago, in my Bluth Bros Theatre days, I worked with a woman who told me that her husband was a tough critic, but that was OK, because his praise really meant something. That was a lesson I've carried with me to this day. We all need praise and support, but I much prefer feedback that is meaningful and constructive, whether positive or negative.
There's a lot of emphasis today on being supportive, which is fine and good, but I notice a reluctance to say anything negative, even when appropriate. Without fair and valid criticism, how will we maintain a standard of what is really outstanding? I am concerned that with all the dumbing-down that goes on these days in the arts we will lose sight of what is truly great and wonderful. So I find myself cheering criticism at times. By looking at what is wrong with certain works I think we will gain greater insight and appreciation into others.

Boy, I surely do agree with you there! Where has this month gone.
I guess I've been in a heat stroke stupor most of the month not to have noticed how quickly it was flying by!

Cable providers and ISPs are definitely at the top of the list--and, in my experiece, with good reason.

And now I must hurry downstairs and get ready to go out on my Friday errands. I'm going a little earlier than usual since I'll have that package to lug from the post office, and who knows HOW long that will take to load in the car.

Still no Freddy this morning :-[
I have not yet posted any posters as I didn't want to create a panic, but am thinking I may need to do so soon. I will also run down to the Humane Society after work and check through there lost and found listings. Everyone in my neighborhood is very familiar with Fred and are keeping a look out for him.
Mostly I am just trying not to think about it too much because it gives me such a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach and in the center of my heart.
-
...Freddy has a collar on him with a little bell, so it will be very apparent to anyone who find him that he belongs to somebody, but unfortunately his ID tag had fallen off a while back and I had yet to replace it. I surely wish now that I had not put that off.
-
DR MBarnum:
Please know that all of us here are thinking of you and Freddy with great affection and concern.

...And for positive vs. negative criticism... -A couple of fragmented thoughts...
People tend to get hyper-critical lately, and I think that's mainly due to the fact that they want to get the word out there as soon as possible. They want to be the first one to post. They don't take the time to edit themselves. They don't want to take the time to edit themselves - they want to present their feelings(!) and opinions in the moment. And this works for both positive and negative critiques.
As for "enjoying" being negative, well... There just seems to be more creative ways to say something is bad than there are to say something is good. And those metaphors and similes for "bad" also seem to be a bit more memorable.
As for what is said on chat boards - or even places like Amazon and the IMDB... Speaking for myself, I hardly ever read the comments that others have made. I know there are musicals, pieces of music, interpretations, etc., that I have loved that others have not liked at all, and vice versa. I also know that sometimes I require more than one initial listen or viewing to fully get - or not get - the piece and to fully form my own opinion. -Yes, there have been a few things I've seen or read that I went back to again to make sure I really did not like - rather than just not understand. I am not a regular reader of the chat boards - I only tend to look at them if something particularly juicy - positive or negative - was reported elsewhere. All of us, to a certain extent, want to find out what all the fuss is about. *That's also the reason I don't post my own reviews on Amazon and the like - I will like or dislike something for my own reasons, not yours/theirs.
On the flipside, I do tend to read the mainstream reviewers almost religiously - well, at least the ones in the New York Times and The Washington Post. I'm always interested in what a Critic likes or dislikes, and, hopefully, I will get an insight as to why he or she feels that way. And I'm familiar enough with the predilections and styles of most of the writers, that I'm able to disregard any comments that may end up coloring my own opinions.

I've heard that about DR JoseSPiano's hands.

DR Noel, you have a wonderfully "character-ful" singing voice for performing your material.
-
DR Ben - As for Walmartopia... Yep, there is some true Talent on that stage and behind the scenes. And I know a bunch of them. As always, I do wish them well, but, as I learned personally with Lestat last year, there are just some things that need to played out until the closing notice is posted, the last check is picked up from company management, and the last bottle of beer is knocked over at the closing party.

Just a reminder that single ticket sales for NYMF go on sale tomorrow!
-
Speaking of single tickets...I decided to go see Young Frankenstein again! Last night (after my direct-deposit posted to my account), I bought one ticket to tomorrow's matinee. The problem is that this weekend is also Seattle's Bumbershoot (http://www.bumbershoot.com/) Festival. LOTS OF TRAFFIC!! Fortunately, Bumbershoot is happening down at the Seattle Center (a couple of miles west of I-5) and Young Frankenstein is just to the east of I-5. So, that shouldn't be a problem. I hope I can notice the differences between the first time I saw it and what it'll be like tomorrow.
-
DR Jose, are you familiar with the Cuban pianist Rubén González?
I saw him at a jazz festival in 2002 and was very impressed by him---he had such energy at over 80 years old!

Payment, as always, can be made to kritzerland@adelphia.net....
I just sent payment! Am I one of the first 25?? :D

Actually, our library doesn't charge late fees, at all! You only have to pay if you actually lose the book, and then if you pay for a book but find it within six months, you can get a refund (minus a small "service fee")!

DR George, do library employees get a discount on late fees? ;)
At the library where I work, that perk was negotiated away by our union years ago for something like having Columbus Day off.

Now, I must take a shower, put on some clothes, then go to work.

At the library where I work, that perk was negotiated away by our union years ago for something like having Columbus Day off.
Many, many years ago, State workers negotiated that they and us (we joined the negotiations because we're on the State retirement system) would work Columbus Day so that we don't have to work the day after Thanksgiving (Friday), so we get a four-day Thanksgiving Day weekend.

Bumbershoot looks interesting this year!
They certainly didn't have anything that cool when I lived in Seattle back @ 1960.

Is DR Ben's other half a non-conformant? DR Ben would be better able to say than I, as I have not yet met Ant (who was unable to attend the dinner that capped DR Jose's first Eating Tour of NYC).
-
WOW-is an understatement. Where did this guy come from?
He came from Russia. ;)
And he's at the Blue Note here in NYC this week. He's on the bill with someone else for the first part of his engagement, but this Sunday night, his last night in town, he'll be the only on the bill. -And I'm hoping to catch his closing set.

Either one. However, the first CD is more traditional, acoustic. However, his second CD, "Live at The Blue Note" is great too - the closing track of "Take the A Train" is something awesome. His website has sound and video clips that should help you make your decision. *Oh, his first CD is mid-level priced, so... :)

Is there a "wrong side of the tracks" in your neck of the woods? ;)

bk, you can always just make your own:
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried dill weed
1 tablespoon dried chives
1 tablespoon dried parsley
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
1 dash hot pepper sauce
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon ground white pepper
The key is probably the buttermilk. In too many cases, regular milk is substituted, and it's not the same thing.
From what I've read, the original Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing Mix came in a packet which was supposed to be mixed with buttermilk. This was later reformulated so that the mix contained buttermilk powder, making regular milk the liquid of choice.
It was then reformulated again, so that it could be sold in bottles found unrefrigerated on your grocery shelf. This took place after the formula and name were bought for several million dollars by the Clorox company.
Does anyone else out there cringe at the idea of eating something that comes from Clorox? I mean, it just sounds so wrong!
-
Alright--I'm outta here!

Off to review my lines for tonight's run through....hopefully I will get to say everything tonight.

I just ordered Live at the Blue Note!!!

Last night's fried chicken was put off until tonight. Der B wanted a burger and french fries, and as much to talk about frustrating daughter and family, so we went downtown to the Purple Parrot.
His burger was OK, but the fries... let's just say that he'll be getting fries two nights in a row, since I was already planning on doing fries with the chicken.
When we first moved to Rehoboth Beach, the Purple Parrot was a fairly decent, inexpensive restaurant and bar. The family friendly restaurant was downstairs, the more "alternative" bar upstairs. Two summers ago they changed locations, to a place closer to the beach. No upstairs. And the bar is no longer as alternative. And the restaurant is no longer as fun. And the food is no longer quite as good.
That's how things go, I guess.
They've probably switched to a botched Ranch dressing for dipping things into, too. We didn't explore that much of the menu.

On that last, the global warming tie-in is mainly through the documentary included on the disc, Science Fiction: Fantasy to Reality. It starts out trying to tie VttBotS in with other genre films that warn of upcoming disasters, but then gives way to an attitude of "we're predicting global warming, and we're holier than you" which is just plain irritating.
Sacco and Vancetti is also on my viewing list.

I think that praising someone is a sign of humility, while pointing out the "bad" makes us feel more "intelligent" and smart! It's an ego trip! IMHO!
-

Rodney Gilfry just called me and this apartment search has been a nightmare from hell: the papers came through for the apartment on 157th and Broadway but it is not ready to be occupied: he told me this morning that there's been no work on it since Monday when we saw it and the girls cannot move in before the middle of next week. He was concerned because there was no crew working today and since it's a holiday weekend, he's shafted. So, there may be another possibility in the same neighborhood through another broker that he may go fo now. The poor man may have lost the money on the other apartment (which I heard the broker tell him wouod be ready by September 1), and I admire his energy and good spirits, but this is ridiculous. These landlords should be hanged by their balls.

Got errands completed with a minimum of muss and fuss. And it wasn't nearly as witheringly hot as it has been this week either. Thank goodness.
-
I began my afternoon watching the Chinese tour bus murder episode of THE CLOSER. It's the last one on the On Demand channel I hadn't checked out, so it was nice to see it again.
When Brenda got the no-sweets diagnosis from the doctor, the acting was just fantastic (and I could certainly FEEL her pain.)
-
Next, I watched the first of two Jim Jarmusch movies that came in from Criterion. Even though it was made later, I chose NIGHT ON EARTH to watch first. Love all of the segments except that tiresome Robert Benigni running off at the mouth for an entire 25 minutes. I know there are people out there who adore him, but I can't think of another current actor whom I find more resistible.
-
I started the film back up to listen to the commentary track (by the sound director and the cameraman). The talk doesn'tr cover the entire film; it starts and stops within the specific five stories being told. But it's good, informative conversation, and as each of them have worked on other Jarmusch movies besides this one, it was nice to hear stories about them too.

Thank you, DR Francois. You'll be pleased to know that we have 30+ books about WD in my library's collection, including those recommended in this article.
-
Tonight, I'll watch the other special features on the disc which include interviews with Jarmusch.
After that, I may put a movie off the to-watch shelf on.
I also have today's AS THE WORLD TURNS to watch.
-
Time to go answer phones for half an hour before leaving for my 3-day weekend.
Bye for now 8)
-
**HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR SWISHY SARAH!!!**
-
I have some writing to tend to, and then I'll head back down for some viewing for the evening.
I mopped the kitchen floor this morning, so I don't have to worry about that awful chore for another week.
-
I know I have given a whole new meaning to errant and truant over the last year or so, but I knew that i was sharing my sad news with the right people. I appreciate your support more than you all know. You are the dearest people.
I won't get to say "This is Mrs. Norman Maine." however. My siblings are not having a service as such. So, I may just have to say it to all of you instead.
As far as the sorrry state of ranch dressing, we never dress at the ranch anymore. You used to see white tie and tails under the chaps, but things have gone to hell.
Thank you again for just being here.
-

-
At least Judy still knew how to dress on the ranch...
-
...where seldom is heard a discouraging word...
-
Beer and Cantaloupe.
Is that a typical ranch breakfast?
-
Back from rehearsal - all musical numbers are blocked with the exception of the two Fred songs in act one, which we'll do on his put-in day on Monday. We did some more scenes and those are ninety percent done, too. We lunched at Hooter's - the absolute best Wings I've ever eaten anywhere, and a very good Hooter's salad (tomatoes, cheese, egg, bacon, and lettuce). Their ranch is decent-tasting but doesn't actually taste like ranch.
And tonight I shall be seeing Xanadu.
-
I shall now go check to see how many book orders we've had...
-
We've had exactly five orders - so twenty more people will be getting a special and lovely suprise with their books - do it, do it now or forever hold your piece or your peace or your peas.
-
I could really show you around.
Damn, I hope so.
-
I'm listening to Eldar's re-imagination (http://www.amazon.com/Re-Imagination-Eldar/dp/B000PA9Q6O/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-3712075-1692941?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1188598266&sr=1-1). Wow! The man (barely ;)) can definitely play the piano!
And he certainly is nice to look at, too!
-
Was talking about this very film with hotel guests last night; saw the film at the Dominion (London) in 1967!! Yes! 1967! And i fell in love with Tommy Steele! (If I Had Money To Burn.... I'd buy me a BANJO!)
Me too! (Well, except the London part!) I had a huge crush on him until I turned my attentions towards Harry Nilsson. (Teenagers are so fickle!)
-
It's getting a little more fun now that things are starting to fall into place.
I hope he shows himself soon!
edisaurus, I don't know if the person moving into your house is a friend, an acquaintance, or a total stranger, but regardless of who they are, they are abusing your kindness and your good nature. First it was to be just a small area to put a few pieces before you moved out; now it is a whole lot of pieces spread out everywhere. She must know that you have indoor-only cats' but she thinks nothing of exposing them and you to her flea problem. Now, we start with the roaches. Puh-Leez! You have got to be firm. Tell her that she is abusing her position and that she needs to find another place to store her things until you are completely moved out. Don't ask her - tell her!
-
When Brenda got the no-sweets diagnosis from the doctor, the acting was just fantastic (and I could certainly FEEL her pain.)
That scene was so great. "You don't have cancer!"-- but you get the feeling that she almost rather would than give up chocolate!
You will love the finale!
-
Do I understand the situation correctly...DR Edisaurus and DH Greg are keeping the old house and renting it out while they will be living in their new house?
-
Me too! (Well, except the London part!) I had a huge crush on him until I turned my attentions towards Harry Nilsson. (Teenagers are so fickle!)
Oh, I know Tommy (And I don't mean Mr Oz!) has forgiven you since!
He was in "Scrooge!" a few months ago!
-
I cannot relate to the title of today's notes because I prefer to enjoy my salad undressed.
The same way you like your men!
-
The same way you like your men!
You know we were all thinking it! :)
-
edisaurus, I don't know if the person moving into your house is a friend, an acquaintance, or a total stranger, but regardless of who they are, they are abusing your kindness and your good nature.
Well, I haven't seen any fleas yet, so I'm hoping for the best. And like I said, the new house already has roaches, on the porch anyway. The tenant hates roaches and was living in a house divided up into apartments, and you know how that goes. Your neighbors bomb---you get their roaches, etc. so I don't think she will encourage their existance in my house.
Now that I'm over the initial shock, I'm getting used to having a 7 foor couch on its end in my living room, and the cats seem to enjoy scaling it (it's already had the treatment from her cats so a few more snags won't be noticed.)
I think it's more of an emotional thing to me, after living there for 27 years, a big change like that is already stressful. But in a week from tomorrow we'll be out of there! Hoo and ray!
Love the new avatar, BTW!
-
You know we were all thinking it! :)
Preposterous!! I was NOT!!
-
Preposterous!! I was NOT!!
That's right, DR François. You are a paragon of decorum.
-
You know we were all thinking it! :)
Well, I certainly was!! :D
-
Do I understand the situation correctly...DR Edisaurus and DH Greg are keeping the old house and renting it out while they will be living in their new house?
That's right. I paid off the mortgage this month but it's not a good time to sell, and since our coffee girl was deperate to move in, it was a good motivator. But we will never be living in this house again, and once it's sold, it will certainly be torn down, as it's a tiny house on a half acre corner lot at the entrance to a very expensive new intown development (houses in the 700's) that's being built.
The house was built in '23 by the owners and I was the second owner, and did a tremendous amount of work to it, so I have more of an attachment to it than most people would. It's still my "starter home"!
And the "new" house is over 100 years old, but without the character you'd normally find in a house of that age. But we will enjoy living there, I think.
-
Oh, I know Tommy (And I don't mean Mr Oz!) has forgiven you since!
He was in "Scrooge!" a few months ago!
***sigh....***
-
Alrighty! Time to start "le weekend"!
-
There are some clips of Eldar on Youtube.
Here's one:

Perhaps BK will have to consider a new CD - LOST IN SEATTLE. We have become quite the city for launching new shows. We have had THE PRODUCERS, LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, PRINCESSES (sorry Brent) to name a few. Now, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN has not even left the Paramount Theater; and already the commercials have started for Randy Quaid in The Broadway Bound LONE STAR LOVE opening at the 5th Avenue.
-
Now, I must take a shower, put on some clothes, then go to work.
Until later!
Don't get those out of order.
-
Coffee girls? Little French boys? You have quite the coterie, I'd say! ;)

Great! Thanks, DR 3D!
-
I've seen two of Mr Steele's Stage shows. He is a STAR. CHARISMA.
-
Great idea DR TCB - "Lost in Seattle". MORE BK CDs please.
-
When is moving day again, DR Edisaurus? Will you weekend be spent packing, packing, packing?
-
That's right, DR François. You are a paragon of decorum.
That's right! Actually, Dame Andrews is writing my biography and that's the title she choose! It also explains why hers has been delayed so many times!
A Paragon of Decorum!
Better than "A Paragum of Decoron"; which will be about my afterlife!! ;)
-
TCB, I think you meant Hairspray, not the Producers - The Producers launched in Chicago.
-
When they make the movie verison of HHW, it can launch in Seattle.
-
Coffee girls? Little French boys? You have quite the coterie, I'd say! ;)
Envious?
You should look like Tommy Steele! ;)

No, it should be "FOUND in Seattle"...songs from shows (including Jekyll & Hyde ;)) that had their pre-Broadway starts here!

Bruce Kimmel will portray Guy Haines.
I thought it was the opposite! :D
-
Nineteen "special" copies of the book are still available - a very special little extra coming with each of the first 25 signed copies. Get it while the gettin' is good, 'cause I'm doing an e-blast tomorrow.
-
I shall now be on my way to see Xanadu, then to have dessert at Joe Allen, after which I shall return.
-
Kyra Sedgwick will be enlisted to portray DR edisaurus.

Guillame Depardieu IS DR Francois!

I'm working on a book by that title!! ;)
Exactly how does that translate en Francais?

These landlords should be hanged by their balls.
I send Craig's landlord along when you do the hanging. ;D

I may be spoiled, growing up, I read Walter Kerr every Sunday. The tone and attitude he took was that of a congenial venerable man-of-the-theatre who’d seen a lot and therefore had a lot of wisdom to impart. Every review seemed like a letter to the playwright, pointing out what was good –and why! – what was in need of improvement – and why. You never got the sense Kerr was angry about anything, and no playwright reading him would get angry either.
I may be quixotic, but my goal is to have 100% of my audience feel like they’ve had a wonderful time at the theatre. I don’t write these things for ME, but rather for the paying customers. If one has a quibble, no matter how minor, I want to hear about it; the hope being that I’ll learn from the criticism and do things better the next time. I don’t see how one can improve any other way.
Sure, I wish every critic had the patience and wisdom of Kerr, but you play the cards you’re given. And if that’s chat board posters younger than Swishy Sarah, it’s O.K.
-
DR Noel, you have a good attitude & I expect it makes it easier to handle criticism, even when you completely disagree.

Speak for yourself, John.
-
Greetings to all!
This has been a really, really, really long week.
My machine arrived on Monday and while it is helping, it isn't exactly the cure all I had hoped it would be. I'm not tired during the day. I don't have to lay my head down on the lunch table and take a nap but when I get home and sit down, I'm gone.
I was rather hoping I would be able to make it past nine but now I can't make it past eight.
I'm trying to make the best of things. It might take me some time to adjust to it. I do feel very wonderful first thing in the morning instead of just wanting to crawl back into bed.
-
Speak for yourself, John.
No, no, no!
My name is François, not John! John's somebody else and he hardly posts here, busy hanging people!
François: it's French, you know, like François Miterrand, or François 1er, or François Truffaud, François Villon....
John would be Jean, like Jean Renoir, Jean Valjean, Jean ai marre!
-
I wanted to post before tomorrow because I will be breaking the computer down and storing it in the spare room until I get the living room painted.
My boss has very kindly offered to give me her single Postropedic (spelling?) bed since she is buying a newer model. I'm thrilled but also a little worried that I won't like it.
I'm used to sleeping in a double bed and the dogs like to sleep with me. There isn't going to be room for them (or maybe me! :) ) if this is a true single size.
I made arrangements with the guy who put in the doggie door to pick it up at her house and deliver it on Monday. I hope I will have all the painting done by then.
I am going to be so busy this weekend!
-
Good to see you DR Danise.
Take care.
Take lots of breaks!
-
Hi Danise. I hope you like the single bed. If it helps you sleep more comfortably maybe it will be worth the size change.
-
It's a shame DR Jason isn't here to discuss the stages it takes for the breathing machine to make a bigger difference, not that waking up refreshed isn't a BIG difference.
Have a good weekend.
-
Thank you, DR TomovOZ. I love the picture DP Colin drew. I wish I had such talent.
Hi DR Jane. I'm hoping so. It has everything, including vibrate. It's a very expensive bed -- I could never afford to get one myself so I'm grateful but I feel ungrateful- because I'm unsure if I'll like it-if you know what I mean.
-
I think I shall put the old matress in the spare room (which is filling up) for a couple of weeks until I see how things work out.
-
Well, I have a lot to do this weekend. I hope the next time I post I will be more comfortable with my new desk and my machine and new bed will have me so rested I can post for hours and not feel tired.
Take care everyone! Talk with you soon.
-
Excellent idea!
-
We need a new mattress.
-
Bruce, count me in for a book. :D
-
You know we were all thinking it! :)
And I do appreciate you leaving it for me!
-
Love the new avatar, BTW!
Thank you about the avatar, but I still think you are being to easy on this person. And actually I don't how those things go. We don't have cockroaches around here. Come to think of it, we don't really have.......... Oh never mind.
-
Coffee girls? Little French boys? You have quite the coterie, I'd say! ;)
You can have the coffee girl, slingblade, I will take the little French boy!
-
TCB, I think you meant Hairspray, not the Producers - The Producers launched in Chicago.
You are, of course, correct bk. I knew it one of those shows starring some campy queen.
-
Martin Mull shall be portraying ME!
surprise

http://nymag.com/daily/intel/20070606liza.jpg
To Hell with Liza, who is the man?
-
LAURA, I'm so glad your AC got fixed quickly and relatively cheaply. Mine went out a couple years ago--in summer, of course--and it was three weeks before I had the new one. But I made do with a window unit in my bedroom, which made all the difference. Hope yours stays fixed!
-
BK, while you're in NY why don't you give Joe Allen a try? I hear the food's quite good. You might like it.
-
Any news on DC Freddy?
-
DR Noel, you have a wonderfully "character-ful" singing voice for performing your material.
Thank you very much, but I can't wait for the true characters Liz Larsen, Brad Oscar, Jeff Talbott, Lynne Wintersteller, Dirk Lumbard, Shannon O'Bryan and Joshua James Campbell to get theirs on it.
Those who've watched Mad Men: it might amuse you to know that DW Joy and I just watched if with candy cigarettes in our mouths. If you can't beat 'em...

He is okay, but I will take Brent Barrett (WSMA) in the role anytime.

Dog Bosco is very sad to report.........that we found DC Freddy!!!! He is safe and sound! :D
When Bosco and I took our walk I happened to see Fred peering out of the garage window of a neighbor who has been away on vacation!
Well, I went to the house and told the neighbor's son, Nick, that my cat was in his garage...then the son realized he did not have the key to the garage! ::)
Oy!
Well, after trying all sorts of keys and paper clips and even Nick trying to find some sort of entrance to the garage from the attic, and finally trying his girlfriends bobby pins he managed to push the garage door open just far enough for Freddy to squeeze out.
I was so happy!
Freddy was disoriented and hungry and thirsty from his 5 day ordeal...and rather grumpy....but hopefully he will learn not to go into that garage again (yes, this is the same garage he got locked in a few years back...for 3 days).
Thank you all for your wonderful vibes for Freddy's safe return!!
-
TCB count me amongst those who likes your new avatar.
-
WHAT A CAT!!! :D ;D
I'M VERY HAPPY AND RELIEVED!!!!
MAYBE IT IS TIME TO MAKE HIM AN INSIDE CAT.
-
MBarnum do you have canned cat food? If not you might want to give Freddy extra liquids for a day. The juice from canned tuna packed in water is good.
-
CALLIE AND BOO ARE DOING A WELCOME HOME FREDDY DANCE!!!!!!!!
Woo and Hoo!!!!!
-
Wonderful news DR MBarnum. (I hope Bosco gets over his disappointment).
-
If you can't keep Freddy inside I suggest you ask the neighbors to leave you a key to their garage next time they leave town.
Are you sure you weren't standing outside the garage calling Freddy? ;D
Keith and I are just thrilled he is home. :D
'night

BK, I ordered a book. Hope you got the order.

TCB...I like your avatar too

I wish I could be just "okay!" too and have a voice like that!
I am afraid that Brent might not have the voice for that role!
As for the face... he could even play Christine! :D
-
Good news about Freddy!
I agree with DR Jane about the water from canned tuna. Hopefully Freddy will get enough water from that.
-
I worked on the basement a little more today. Oy! It's going to be a lot bigger job than I thought. I am going to have to figure out how to patch some holes in the concrete and will probably buy a new electric miter saw for the molding etc. I still want to do it and still think I'm up for it. As my brother said "It's not like it's your living room and has to be done right away"
I did finally have a "Well, duh" moment today. My neighbor across the street is a contractor. I found out they will be home all weekend and asked if he's come look at it and give me some advice. I still want to do it, but there are a few challenges I need advice about, so I'm hoping he has some good ideas.

TCB count me amongst those who likes your new avatar.
The new avatar is okay but I'm sure the real person is MUCH better! Ah!
Thank G*d (Brent Barrett?!) we are not what we look! :D

Tomorrow I'm going to ARTSPLASH! It's a huge annual art fair along the Missouri River. I'm going to go first thing in the morning before it gets too crowded. Hopefully I'll find a treasure for a room I've completed or inspiration for my new room
-
Monday is the annual Labor Day picnic put on by the local labor unions. This years speakers are Bill and Hillary Clinton, Bill Richardson, Joe Biden and a representative from the O'Bama campaign. It's in a great old fashoined park along the Big Sioux River. And all the food is free.....
-
a representative from the O'Bama campaign...
Nice to know my old schoolmate Barack is going after the Irish vote in the traditional way. Go B.O.!
-
Martin Mull shall be portraying ME!
Smart casting idea!
;D
-
I'm so very happy for you, DR MBarnum. And I know how relieved you must be.
-
I began my evening by scanning fairly quickly through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Yes, the gay storyline was on today with a lot of denial and "I'll make it work" kind of naivete.
And, my pet peeve about all soaps - two characters discussing something of great intimacy while the third party walks up and overhears just enough of the conversation to be suspicious.
-
Next, I went back to NIGHT ON EARTH to digest the special features. There was a one hour (well, 58 minute) audio section where fans of the film posed questions to director Jim Jarmusch and he answered them. Very entertaining answers that gave insight into his process on his film and his habits about writing, shooting, and having films distributed.
-
Back from Xanadu and a little post-theater light supper at Joe Allen. Must now write Ye Olde Notes.
-
There was also about a six minute video interview from a Paris "60 Minutes" style program where he was asked questions about NJIGHT ON EARTH shortly after its release.
-
Next, I pulled out DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE and started watching it. I caught just the last few minutes waiting for MAD MEN to come on last night, and that made me want to see the entire film again since I hadn't watched it in a long while.
-
I only got about 20 minutes in before best friend John called and wanted to come over to watch something on Blu-ray. We chose the recently released (on Blu-ray) G.I. JANE. I've always enjoyed the film, but I have to say that not much is gained by presenting it in high definition. So much of it is in low lighting with lots of smoke, mist, fog, and darkness, so that three dimensionality that one longs to see with HD was only present for fleeting moments.
I did choose the uncompressed 5.1 soundtrack which was a lot more open with a greater sense of envelopment than the usual Dolby Digital compressed track.
-
Tomorrow, I finish up DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE before starting on the next Jarmusch film STRANGER THAN PARADISE.
-
Noel - Where were you and Mr. Obama schoolmates?
-
The college just up the street: Columbia
-
OMG, I just realized that I'm older than Barak Obama...ok, it's only a month, but....
-
I'm heading down to bed now.
Good night!
