Title: THE DANCE OF THE SEVEN VEILS
Post by: bk on September 14, 2007, 09:24:21 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had nothing veiled, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently getting a Brazilian wax whilst enjoying the sounds of the Bossa Nova.

Gorgonize is Mr Oliver Stone favourite verb!

You turn to stone if you look into a Gorgon's eyes.

You turn to stone if you look into a Gorgon's eyes.

It happened to actors who looked into Mr Stone's eyes, I was told!

I keep looking for Gorgons but they seem to have disappeared from view!

Vincent Price

The Abominable Dr Phibes is to blame for my loathing of having blood taken!  Poor Terry Thomas.

It was a favourite film of OzDerek.

My favourite performace by Mr Price was in The Muppet Show.

Good Morning!

Boy am I glad I don't have rehearsal until 1:30 tomorrow afternoon.  However, I had planned to get my haircut tomorrow morning, but I'm thinking a good night's and partial morning's sleep would do me good.  -And after the cocktails and wine and aperitifs I had tonight at dinner, well...

And for yesterday's posts...

DR TCB - Mary Poppins has three "teams" of Banks children (a Jane and a Michael).  There are two new Janes-in-training who will be starting at the beginning of October.  Alas, the previous Janes have outgrown the show - literally - they're getting too tall.
Title: Re:THE DANCE OF THE SEVEN VEILS

DR Ron Pulliam - Yes, my "quasi-first-date" knew it was going to be a quasi-first-date.  Although, it turned out to be quite a wonderful "first meeting" - for all of us at the table.  And since we were all from different professional arenas, the conversation was all over the place - and that was a good thing.

*Or is the online version bookmarked and/or listed in your Favorites?  ;)
Title: Re:THE DANCE OF THE SEVEN VEILS
Post by: JoseSPiano on September 14, 2007, 10:59:46 PM
And as for dinner earlier tonight... I really did have a wonderful time.  I was basically the "fourth wheel" at the table, but soon after sitting down, it was like we had all been friends for years.  I'm still amazed, for lack of a better word, at how well we all got along.  The evening flew by - when we went to check the time after we had had our desserts - and the complimentary digestif - we were all surprised to find that it was already past 11:00 - and we had been there since 7:30.

In short, tonight was just what I needed after an uncharacteristically stressful week for me.  Good food, good drink, good company.  And, most importantly, some good friends.  Good new friends.  -And not a single Chimney Sweep or Nanny in sight.  ;)

One of my favorite Vincent Price performances was in "Laura," because it seemed laughable that he and Gene Tierney would be such a hot couple.  There was an interesting chemistry there with Judith Anderson though.

Speaking of Laura, special thanks to DRLaura who gave me a ride home from the airport yesterday.

I'm off for much needed rest.   It was nice being away from 108 degree weather for awhile, though!
Title: Re:THE DANCE OF THE SEVEN VEILS

DR td - I'm suspecting Mr. Hamlisch will lead the orchestra in a few selections from the "West Side Story Dance Suite", and probably a solo version of "Maria" sung by the tenor.  I'd say there's a chance that Bernadette Peters might sing "Somewhere" - I think I've heard do that in concert at one point and time.  She does have some Bernstein in her repertoire, so those charts could be pulled out too.

I'd say go, especially if you've already paid for the tickets.

Carol's Dress Returned -- By a Homeless Fan!

09-14-2007

TMZ has learned that Carol Channing's prized "diamond dress" has been
returned. Hallelujah!

TMZ spoke with a rep for the Hollywood Renaissance hotel who told us that a homeless Caucasian man -- a person completely not fitting the description of the person of interest caught on surveillance tape -- walked into the hotel lobby about an hour ago. The man approached a hotel security guard and handed over a bag containing the dress. The man told the guard that he found the dress in a plaid shopping bag in a park in Hollywood. He said he was a huge fan of Ms. Channing's and had heard about the stolen dress on the news, and felt the need to return it to her.

We've learned Carol met with the man this evening, and even took a couple of pictures. No word on whether the man will receive a reward for the return.

Boy, I must say, it's tough to keep up when I'm not working at a place where I can access the internet and I don't have my home service set up yet.

I am up early waiting for Comcast to hook up the cable. This was suposed to happen last Saturday---then Sunday---then Wednesday---and now today. And between all those bogus appointments and lost work, I have probably talked to 20 different people there who assured me that everything was "in progress".

Apparently they pay people just to listen to you complain and then agree with you and then do nothing.

If they didn't have a monopoly here, they would be out of business. And I've heard the same horror stories from everyone else I've talked to about it. I would be embarrassed to tell someone I worked for them!

There have been some positive things. We haven't really unpacked yet so the cats have been confined to the bedroom, bath and kitchen. Being in such close quarters and the bedroom really the only liveable place where work isn't going on, they have bonded and even the standoffish cat, who has never slept with us or gotten on the bed, will now sleep there with several other cats.

After the cable guy ocmes (my appointment is for 8-11 which means 5:30) we plan to let the kitties explore more of the house---the living room and dining room. There are lots of windows, so they should enjoy that!

Good morning, all!  It is indeed a rainy morning and I am thrilled to stay inside and work on "The Brain" charts.  The tiny fixes are accomplished and I'm two-thirds through the new "All About Men"  so all that's left now are the "Brain Tap," Curtain Calls, and Exit Music.  I may run out to do a few errands, but I'll be primarily homebound.

I need to hit the post office because I have no stamps; I sent out a ton of postcards for "The Brain" and I want to send a few more before Monday. I finally broke down and sent the Macbeths one, but they're still going out of my will.

DR edisaurus, it's good to see you and know you are surviving.

Saturday morning greetings.  I was finally able to sleep past 6am, which is pretty amazing since I slept on the couch in the family room.  With no curtains in our bedroom and DH Richard in Toledo, that was my option.  I actually fell asleep watching Giada on the food channel - she was in New York City at H & H Bagels.

DR Ginny, all quiet on the Midwestern front?

Yes, DR Elmore, it is.  Today I'm going to the grocery to order some lunch trays for Monday, then pick up my mom.  She's going to help me put a couple of our windows back together and then we're going to eat clam dip and watch Michigan try to play football.  Richard will probably return from Toledo sometime during the game.

Very sorry to hear about MBarnum's friend---he sounded like a wonderful person.    I guess if you have to go, that's the way I would want to go, too. Quick and relatively painless.

The receptionist where I mainly work has been out for 2 weeks. When I was working there last week people were crying and hugging each other. It took a while to find out what was going on because they all had to take turns telling me because they kept breaking down.

The receptionist has inoperable cancer, is on feeding and fluid tubes and has a prognosis of 4-6 weeks. And she was just working with us and seemed fine. She doesn't have any family, so the folks at work were her extended faily and everyone is taking it very hard. She is going to go home and receive hospice care. It's so hard to believe...I guess I won't until I go to see her.

Vincent Price!!!

So many of my favorites have already been mentioned, but that won't stop me from mentioning them AGAIN.

House of Wax
Laura

Leave Her to Heaven - as the evil prosecutor who wanted to pin Gene Tierney's death as a murder on sweet little Jeanne Crain!

Fall of the House of Usher - as a blond!

Then we went to the director's house for a party....tonight after the final performance we will strike the set....

Comcast.EEAARRGH!!!!I've gotten four 5$ rebates this year for when the service goes out for a day, but it takes about an hour of phone waiting. I feel your pain, sister...Fave V Price flick is HOUSE OF WAX, esp in 3-D on the Wide Screen. But my favorite Price perfomance of all is On the Styne/Harburg DARLING OF THE DAY; You can't top a Vincent Price musical, especially when Patricia Routledge does most of the singing. But Price is pretty good too, with songs probably meant for Rex Harrison

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And I've actually been up since 8:00!

-I just woke up, and felt awake - well, at least capable of putting my feet on the floor - so I put my feet on the floor, and then eventually headed down to Chelsea to get my hair cut - I was about a week overdue.

There were already five guys ahead of me by the time I got there - and I got there just a couple of minutes after they opened.  However, I had my iPod and a copy of New York Magazine so that kept me occupied, and I only ended up waiting for about half an hour before a chair freed up.  -It helped that three of them were waiting for "Max", but it appeared that Max was running late this morning.  However, once he showed up, he took his first client, and so on and so forth.  I got my hair cut by the new guy - who's name I have yet to pick up - and it's a very good cut.  Ahhhh.

And, yes, it's a cool morning here in NYC.  I went out in just t-shirt and shorts, and I probably should have brought a light jacket with me.  And there have been pockets of rain here and there too.  But now, at least here in Harlem, the sun has broken through the clouds, and it looks quite idyllic in our backyard.  :)

There's a curtrent rumor floating about that once it was known the Russian hands and Roman fingers of DR Jose would be gracing the show, the entire male cast put in for hazard pay. :-*

Many, many years ago, the Guthrie Theater did a production of Skin of Our Teeth. I loved it, and saw it many times, but it was a disaster for the theater, I think, and between the first and last acts usually half the audience had left.

Two actors... the one playing the father and another guy whose role I don't precisely remember anymore - not Cain,  had a little schtick going in one scene, a lot of clever repartee, and they invariably changed their lines each night. I used to go see it just to see what they were going to do next with that scene (and also just out of curiousity to see if there was ever a night when half the audience DIDN'T walk out...but they always did.)

And now 20 years later I can't even remember the details....just the vague outlines and the fact that I thought it was hilarious.... god it sucks to get old. Actually, it sucks to not have had the nerve to make a bootleg copy of the production... not that I'd have had the knowledge to do so back then...

Callie is indeed home, but she's not feeling very well at all. Several of the staff asked if she was going home for the weekend and the vet said if she doesn't do her doody, she'll have to go back. Also she has the equivilent of diaper rash and is very very sore. She was not happy there at all. So, I am determined to do whatever I need to to keep her home.

So I've set up the spare bedroom for her with her food and litter box (which she has been using already)   She is going to stay in there until she has recovered a little more.   She was VERY aggitated at the vet today, but was very glad to see me. She seemed to know we were going home and the minute I brought her carrier into the house she started purring.

It's taking her a while to unwind. I left her alone for awhile then went up and it took me a while to calm her down again. Once she calmed down, I spent about 20 minutes just sitting on the bed reading my book while she was curled up purring.  I just left her alone again to see if she'll get some sleep.  I'm going to keep doing that so she gets over the idea that when someone approaches her it's to do some procedure that isn't going to be pleasant.

She and Boo have seen each other a couple times, but Callie is just too sore and has been too upset for the past few days to have Boo bothering her right now. Boo isn't pleased, but she knows that Callie is home and she seems more relaxed too.

Organic food exposed

...

THE SURPRISING FACT IS that this mass migration to organic food has not been on the back of scientific evidence. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find comprehensive evidence that organic food is healthier – either for us or the planet.

COSMOS is a print magazine that treats science as natural part of culture, covering it from many angles: art, design, travel, interviews, humour, history and opinion.

It appears my weekend will be spent with the girls. That's fine with me. I can use some nice quiet time myself.  Think I'll go to the store in a little while and get a little roast beef and make roast beef and rice.

It's only supposed to get up to 60 degrees today after a record cold night of 32 deegrees and tomorrow will be near 80 degrees again, so today is a good day to stay home, make some comfort food, comfort the cats and read my book. I'm reading Nathan Leopold's Life plus 99 Years.  He doesn't talk about his childhood or the details of the murder, but it's fascinating to read his point of view of the time immediately after the murder through the trial.

Well, you season the roast however you choose, I keep it simple with salt and pepper with garlic and onion and put it in the oven at 350 in my le creuset dutch oven with a lid with a little bit of water in the bottom of the pan so it doesn't stick.  While the roast cooks, I soak one cup of rice in 1 can of beef consume soup.  Check the roast periodically. When you think there is about 1/2 hour left put the rice in with the roast.   Or you can take the roast out and let it rest while the rice cooks in the pan.   My mom always cooked her roast low and slow. It would be well done, but cooked long enough that it was tender.   Also, if you leave the roast in the pan, it soaks up some of the flavor from the consume.  Pretty basic, but tasty

Damn, I bought this computer program, Printshop, specifically because it said I would be able to use the cloning feature on photos, which my Printmaster and HP Image Processing do not allow.  Well, it does it, but a very poor version of cloning, and only in round circles.  Oh well, I only spent $19.99 on the damn CDs, so I guess I can't complain.

The meaning of life?

This morning on the way to breakfast with some friends, I saw a man crossing the steet who was wearing a Halloween-type rabbit mask and carrying a rubber tomahawk.   He actually had the mask up while he was waiting for the light to change and then put the the mask down to cross the street.   I saw no signs of a crew for the filming for a reality show, and Allen Funt is dead, so I have no ide what this means.  But it's these little things that keep me going.

Good vibes to all, and may you have a day free of rubber tomahawks!

I spent the afternoon sorting through some accumulating piles of clutter.  I don't feel like I threw enough out, but it does look a darn sight better than before.  And I found some valuable things I had misplaced along the way.  So that was good.  I really need to start in on the laundry, but I'm thinking I'd rather snuggle with Zach and take a nap instead.  That's a plan, right?   :)

It was drizzly this morning, but it's turned into a nice, crisp, partly sunny afternoon.  Fall must be coming!  I'm sure there will still be plenty of warm days, though.

The Dr Who episode tonight was fun... it illicted several squeals of fright from the Vixter... she loves this show

I enjoy that show also. I have some of the classic series on tape also. However, I am really enjoying the news series and I had my doubts that I would.

Sorry to be E & T, It has been a hellacious week to say the least. My mother has been ill, a woman at work is in the hospital and that added to my workload and this seemed to be the week of meetings. I had 6 of them!  Yesterday, I ran errands and met up with some freinds and we had a good laugh, we were searching youtube, chatting and having a few more good laughs. It was a nice evening.

Thank you for the thoughts. You are a great bunch of people...

My dad is holding his own despite being his usual cantankerous self...  :)

They are draining fluid off of him at least once a week. He is starting to sleep more and more and is usually bedded down for the night about 830 or 9. He also takes a lot of naps.

A friend of a friend, another serial renovator, came by and picked up two aluminum extension ladders, plus a bunch of odds and ends from various renovation projects--all stuff I no longer need and wish to be rid of. It feels so good to have less! Maybe I'm finally getting the hang of this. Might I even become a Minimalist? I doubt it, but maybe I'll be less of a pack rat--or a magpie, as this fellow today calls it.

I was longing for open spaces, less traffic, less crime, etc, but hadn't realized how much big cities have to offer, nor how much of that I wanted and needed.

I have not heard good things either about Comcast.

To my knowledge, it is not available. However Cablecom in Fargo is not much better.

"What am I supposed to do reform? Become Poor but Honest. On what corner would you like me to beat my Tambourine?"

Aha! I plopped a DVD of the Movie I thought it was and it was the one I thought it was-LADY IN THE LAKE. Does anyone remember the Philip Marlowe film noir Directed by and Starring Robert Montgomery.?? The film was shot as if the leading character was the camera. Pretty interesting movie. The actress ,by the way, was Audrey Totter.

Back from a good run-through - lots of fun stuff, in a slightly bigger room that was much easier to play in, and the show ran very smoothly.  Good or bad, it's really a very tight, well-oiled show at this point, sans set and lights and sound.

So, we'll be going in to our six hours of tech very prepared and all we can do is hope all the tech stuff and having to deal with backstage space and actually being on the stage for the first time doesn't trip us up too much.  I'm still hopeful that we'll get to run on Tuesday and Wednesday with costumes.

After rehearsal, I had a little meeting, then met Cason and BJ at Hooter's, where I had wings and a salad.  I literally could not eat more than seven of the drumettes, so huge are they, and I only had about a quarter of the salad.   After that, I treated myself to the only DVD I've purchased in the last seven weeks and it was even 25% off list price even though it doesn't officially come out until next Tuesday - Robinson Crusoe On Mars.  I'll try watching it this evening, as I've decided not to make the trek to the lower East side.

On the way we passed a cool looking 1952 Cadillac hearse with the license plate 6FT NDR. ;D

A few minutes later we passed our friends who have two Bernese Mountain Dogs.  Keith had time to let them know where we were headed.  Within half an hour our friend showed up with her 7 month old puppy. :D :D .  We were shocked how much the puppy has grown since we last saw her.  She’s almost as tall as Sherlock & almost as pretty.  I'm kicking myself cuz I almost took my camera with me.

Good Evening!

Back from rehearsal...

Of course, my train "decided" to stop between 72nd and Columbus Circle for about 20 minutes - they were having signal problems again this morning - so I ended up being a few minutes late for rehearsal.  It was just 1:30 when the train pulled into Columbus Circle, so I ran up to the street and hailed a cab.  Of course, before I could say, "Take 9th Ave.", the cabbie headed toward 7th which meant going through Times Square.  I did manage to call the conductor and leave a message to say I would be late - since I didn't have the phone number for stage management - and then as soon as I had left that message, the stage manager called me.  And by the time I got to the studio, they were just about ready for me to accompany all the blocking they had just learned.  Whew!

In any case, it was a good rehearsal, and tomorrow will be a big review day.  And I'm gonna get there an hour early just to be safe!

I've still got "The Brain Tap" to recopy with the new dance music and routining and the bass part for the Curtain Calls; everything else is now finished.  Tomorrow I'll stop by rehearsal and give the MD everything but "The Brain Tap," which I'll most likely carry to the rehearsal on Monday night.

Yes, BK, I think Steve and Joe in their speedos will boost ticket sales immediately. It's probably a better advetising device for NYMF than the "Roller Derby" ad. I suspect westcoastdrama, who was last seen raging about the Donmar Theatre 2008 season, will be happy to have something else about "The Brain" to piss him (or her or it) off.

Well, they would definately need a different company policy than Chippendale's and the other male reviews have in Las Vegas.  They have signs warning that the shows are intended for WOMEN ONLY, and not for gay men.

Yes, it came out on DVD several months ago. I have it and have watched it several times.

Back to LADY IN THE LAKE a second. I love movie mysteries, and this one is fine. Not as good a Marlowe as MURDER MY SWEET (my favorite Marlowe and one of my favorite ever noirs) or THE BIG SLEEP, but still very entertaining.

Yes, I remember suggesting to Mr. bk two weeks ago that he had a DVD player with him and that he could use it. So glad he enjoyed CRUSOE.

I probably won't get to my copy until tomorrow night.

I am still heavily involved in the BROTHERS & SISTERS box set. I am about 1/3 of the way through episode 19, the infamous "Game Night" episode.

There was another very lively commentary with the episode "The Other Walker" which featured the newest cast member Emily VanCamp as Rebecca.

All three commentaries that I've listened to have been fun, animated discussions, quite the polar opposite to the mostly dreary commentaries on the UGLY BETTY and especially the GREY'S ANATOMY sets.

I did watch tonight's episode of TORCHWOOD. Not quite as fun an episode as the first one, but stil enjoyable. And I'm sure those who might get a kick out of female-on-female snogging were in heaven with this episode tonight.

Was watching The History of Sex on The History Channel - such a fascinating show that I promptly fell asleep and dozed for about thirty minutes.

DRs Matt H. and George - Entertainment Weekly says the "Brothers & Sisters" box set Season 1 does not contain the unaired pilot w/Buckley.

Right now, I'm watching the Creative Arts Emmy Awards (that were actually given out last week) and they are just slamming through the categories!  They don't announce any of the nominees, except for the acting catagories.  The presenters just walk up to the microphone with an envelope and say "The Emmy for Outstanding...whatever...goes to" and they say the winner.  There have also been several multiwinners.  The Best Choreography award had THREE winners!  Otherwise, the winner has about 30 seconds to say what they're going to say and it's been obvious that some speeches have been edited.  Elaine Strich's was bleeped...but I'm waiting to see what they actually left in of Kathy Griffin's speech. :)

I just checked Callie and she seems to be more comfortable. So, I think I'm going to go read for awhile and check one more time. Then I should be able to get some sleep.

Tonight, I'll continue with BROTHERS & SISTERS. At 10, I may watch TORCHWOOD which the DVR is recording at 9. At 10, I'll be able to watch it and speed through the BBC-America commercials.

Our local COMCAST has BBC America and Torchwood in its On-Demand service - so we can rewatch episodes any time in the next month

And if there is a national chain with the concept of Hooters, why isn't there an equivalent chain with male waiters?

I suppose Exlax doesn't work on cats? Seems to me that turns everything liquid... and yes unfortunately I do know from personal experience...  Or I suppose if it's already been generated...but is just stuck...Exlax wouldn't do any good....

Never mind...

This is probably TMI, but, a few years ago, I had eaten about 30 Velamints' Chocolate Mints within a half hour (about one every minute...they're very good) and within a couple of hours, I felt a little rumbling in my tummy.  Very shortly I went to the bathroom and...whooosh!!!  EVERYTHING came out (if you know what I'm sayin')!!  But, it was not an uncomfortable experience...not that I specifically enjoyed it, but there was no discomfort at all. ;) So, when most products that contain either sorbitol or manitol say "Excessive consumption may produce a laxative effect," they ain't kidding!!
