I second DR VIXMOM's suggestion of Pepto Bismol.....when I feel an upset stomach, I chew a couple of the tablet and it helps.
I always take them with me to Paramount's King's Island.

I was never in Hickory Dickory Dock, but I did play an earth boy who found an space alien boy on Christmas Eve and taught him all about our Christmas traditions.
The boy who played the alien had a much nicer costume, but I had more lines. His first name was Gary, but I don't remember his last name....hmmm.....he might be famous by now.

I also had a neighbor who put on spook houses in his basement. I was in one of them, wearing a skeleton halloween costume when I was very young and got so scared i wet my pants. He reminds me of that every once in awhile.
We also did a production of the Wizard of Oz in his garage. He was the wicked witch and had a box rigged up so he could melt. Gees, we had fun over there. I think his dauchsand (however you spell that) was Toto. I can't remember who I was, the lion I think. I was the Tin Man in our law school production.

Unfortunately, BK, you are in town at the worst time for me, workwise. Yes, I went to the theatre last night but it was a 7pm curtain and it was the first night I've been out since the first week in August. Working 6 days a week from 6am to 4pm (or later) doesn't leave much time (or energy) for get togethers. I will definitely see you when we see The Brain and if you have some free time Sunday afternoon, perhaps we can have a bite or something. I'll be in Midtown for the Broadway Cares Flea Market. It's in Shubert Alley and on 44th Street between Broadway and 8th Avenue from 10am-7pm.

I went to bed directly after posting last night, just before midnight, and I willed myself to not get up, not give in, and I was asleep within five minutes. I was only up once during the evening to use the facility, otherwise I slept peacefully. And so I averted what I thought was going to be a horrid rest of the evening. I will say that the nausea has turned to queasyness and is a little better and I'll just take it easy today and I think I'll forego lunch.

Good morning, all! Today I turned 61, and I slept late. I awoke to a plethora of emails from friends and family (nothing from the Macbeths but I am not in the least surprised), and a multitude of wonderful greetings from you DRs. Now that "The Brain" score is out of my thinning hair, I may actually spend some time today editing my editorial guidelines so that we can finish them. I was going to run down to watch the runthrough, but I'll be at the Acorn Theatre all day tomorrow, so I'll deal with personal and other professional matters instead, perhaps hit the NYPL as well.

I have the original issue with all the solutions, etc. but missing "Ceylon" and the "Moonfall reprise." (I bought the casette tape in order to get those cuts.)
Wasn't the OCR reissued with those missing songs but some of the solutions deleted?

I have just the opposite solution to nausea. COke/Diet Coke soothes my stomach. THings like ginger ale and 7-Up only make it worse for me.

Looks like a carbon copy today of eysterday, but looking at the five day forecast in the newspaper this morning brought a frown to my face: a gradual warming trend through teh weekend with high going into the upper 80s, and the lows in the high 60s (instead of the high 50s we're having now).

To me, your nausea last night and this morning could simply be caused from low blood sugar - and eating that brownie for "dinner". -Especially since you've been eating some pretty full meals semi-regularly the past couple of days. The queasy stomach could easily just be an empty stomach. And light-headedness is a common low-blood sugar, dehydration symptom.
Hmm... Maybe I'll have to drop some cookies off at your rehearsal. And a nice salad with some grilled chicken. And a roll or two.

Well, I did what I had to do. I am giving her until October 12th so that she can find another job and I don't have to advertise until after I return from New York. It went pretty well and I hope that I am not making a mistake in trusting her for the next month, but I don't think I am. She wasn't upset, or at least didn't show it.
I did back up all the computers yesterday....I'm trusting, but not stupid

For those interested in the new series PRIVATE PRACTICE, ABC has cobbled together clips of Kate Walsh's character Addison Montgomery from her GREY'S ANATOMY episode to give some background for the upcoming spin-off.
I do plan to watch PRIVATE PRACTICE, but since I've seen every episode of GREY'S (multiple times), I don't feel I need this primer to the show, and if they show any clips from the upcoming premiere, I don't want those to spoil my first full viewing of the show either.

Coming out next week: The Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland set of their four "backyard" musicals: BABES IN ARMS, STRIKE THE BAND, BABES ON BROADWAY, and GIRL CRAZY. I never had any of these movies on anything but VHS tape, so I'm guessing these DVDs are going to look hundred of times better on their DVD versions.

(This should keep me out of trouble for a little while.)
Not to mention the arrival of the Doctor Who: New Beginnings boxed set, covering the return of The Master and the switch from Tom Baker's Doctor (the Fourth) to Peter Davison's (the Fifth). I'm savoring these, one episode at a time... a great warmup to the final three stories of the current Doctor Who season on Sci-Fi.

Der B and I went to what we thought was the final Rehoboth Beach Farmer's Market of the season. Good news- the Market has been extended through the second week of October!
While there, the chef at Dogfish Head (http://www.dogfish.com/), a very good brewpub in town (and yes, they do brew their own beers, not to mention their own distillery that makes excelent rum and vodka), was giving a cooking demonstration. I was busy shopping, but der Brucer was watching and kept waving me back over to see what he was doing.
Two of his ideas ended up on our table last night. The first was a honey-lemon rockfish fillet. Slice a lemon crosswise, 1/4 inch thick, lay them down in a line and set the fillet on top of them, skin side down. Season with salt and pepper, and then add a drizzle of honey. Transfer to a grill or oven and cook for ten to fifteen minutes. Delish. But I suggest using a mild honey, as a strongly flavored one will overpower the fish.
Second, take some portobello mushrooms, remove the stems but keep the gills. Set the caps gill-side up, drizzle with some Dogfish 90-Minute IPA Ale (the product plug) and layer on top some thickly julienned sweet peppers, butter, and Parmesan cheese (freshly and coursely grated, of course). Grill for a few minutes, until the cheese is melted and the mushrooms cooked through. This really has to be done on a grill - I tried doing it in the oven, in a pan, and the mushers came out, well, mushy.

I love his stuff! His Making Of/Soul Of/Reach Of a Chef trilogy is great reading. Charcuterie is a book I've frequently loaned to members of the meat department at the store, usually resulting with their buying copies of their own. Not to mention his work with Thomas Keller (The French Laundry Cookbook and Bouchon). And his appearance on the Cleveland episode of Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations on the Travel Channel, which had me laughing out loud. (Bourdain and Ruhlman together are a total dangerous hoot!) For this, I'll willingly go over my $15 rule. But I'll bet I can still get it cheaper at Jessica's Biscuit.

A Feast Made for Laughter, by Craig Claiborne. Yep, his memoir where he, perhaps, told too much!
The Secret Life of Lobsters, by Trevor Corson. I previously enjoyed his The Zen of Fish, all about the world of sushi.
The Bialy Eaters, by Mimi Sheraton. This, from the back cover:

This collection almost, but not quite, hit the fifty dollar target, something that der Brucer noticed but that I hadn't. (He does all the on-line ordering in our household.) So, looking further down the wishlist, he added Book of Spices, by Marie-Francoise Valery, a small but colorful tome on, well, spices.
Why was there a target of fifty dollars? Because, by adding that last book, he was also able to get me, for free, a Jessica's Biscuit t-shirt and a years subscription to Gourmet Magazine. The t-shirt, by the way, is quite fetching.

I still haven't found my computer glasses.
At der B's suggestion, I'm trying an old pair that I used to wear, that I've kept around as an emergency back-up. If I hold my head in just the right position, I can kinda sorta get the computer screen to be very clear. But, and this is a BIG but, for some reason the height of the screen looks smaller on the left side, and larger on the right side. It is making me nauseous. Bleh.

I've had a full afternoon of viewing. I began by watching the last three episodes of POWER RANGERS Volume 2, and there was one pseudo-demon who turned out not to be a lizard-man after al. And played by a very cute young actor named Dwayne Cameron.
The series is filmed in New Zealand, so I have no idea what his nationality is. It was a kind of Beast-Prince sort of story and unusual for this action-oriented series.

I also watched the bonus features in the second volume set. One detailed the super weeapons each Ranger uses. The other was another game section involving a trivia quiz based on questions from Volume 2's adventures, a jigsaw puzzle section where you have to rebuild each of the weapons, and then a target practice game that little boys would love.

Next I watched two more episodes of BONES. The first was about the remains of a man found in a bathtub full of lye. Surprising story with lots of suspects.

The other was about a woman's burned skeleton found in the chandelier of a hotel room. Again, a very convoluted mystery with a surprising murderer.

I concluded my afternoon with today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. The gay storyline was rpominent today. At one point it looked like the final break-up between luke and Noah. Then on the previews, it seemed like all wasn't exactly over between them. Very soap opera-ish!

Back from a fine run-through - no real problems, and all costume changes went smoothly, even the quickest of them. Of course, we're still missing stuff, but our replacement gal is working around the clock and we'll have everything for our afternoon dress tomorrow. I let everyone go at three, I helped schelp stuff to the theater, and then came home, but just got a call that they need me to come back because Cason and BJ, both of whom we've been calling since three, have their stupid cell phones off and therefore can't be raised to help us. Oh, well, I'll be back in an hour, I guess.

I am thoroughly embroiled in controversy over at the Film Score Monthly Message Board.
One thread started by BK...to which an unexpected and totally hilarious/ludicrous "coda" was posted by "Saint David", as I call him.
And another on an innocuous thread about an upcoming soundtrack release in Europe that smacks of being a "bootleg". Several good people said as much, and then the originator got ugly and told one of those good people that since he had "a serious issue" over the matter that he should contact the CD label.
I saw red. And I've been arguing the idiocy of "entitlement" all day.
It just suits my snarky mood.

Here in the northern hemisphere -- in the United States, at any rate -- the rule of thumb is to never wear white after Labor Day (first Monday in September). Generally, that applies to shoes, I believe, but I've heard it applied to trousers and skirts, too.
Do Aussies have any cut-off dates (traditional, that is) for such things?

To me, your nausea last night and this morning could simply be caused from low blood sugar - and eating that brownie for "dinner". -Especially since you've been eating some pretty full meals semi-regularly the past couple of days. The queasy stomach could easily just be an empty stomach. And light-headedness is a common low-blood sugar, dehydration symptom.
Hmm... Maybe I'll have to drop some cookies off at your rehearsal. And a nice salad with some grilled chicken. And a roll or two.

Yes, it was elmore's Brainchild to insert the Oz quote - I love that sort of thing, so I was delighted when I heard it. All our stuff is now in the theater. Of course, we can't have a day without drama, so our wireless mic, which NYMF agreed to let us have and which was part of a rather large enhancement package we all paid for, was delivered (apparently), but - wait for it - no one can FIND IT. So, they're saying it will cost me $250 to get one, and I've told them in no uncertain terms to have the mic there tomorrow at a cost of $0 or I will cause them more misery than they can possibly imagine. We went right to the head of the organization, who promised he'd deal with it first thing in the morning. The ineptitude is the worst I've ever seen. Deliveries made with no one from NYMF to accept them, so stuff gets lost or sent to the wrong venue, it just never stops. I will say this - darling Noel and darling FJL opening the second week, will get the benefit of the crap that we early openers have to deal with. By the time they go up, all of us will have sorted out all of it. Much better to open later - let the early guys all have the pain and suffering. :)

Larry, just caught up on yesterday's posts. We're using, 2 trumpets, 1 trombone, 1 horn, drums, 3 reeds (no oboe/english horn), 1 violin, 1 'cello, guitar, bass, harp and keyboard (piano, and celeste - and the 16 meausres of calliope :P ) We've had to thin it out a bit as our pit is not that deep and it's not covered so it's a bit strong for what we need, but it's working out fine. The director moans nightly about not having the Broadway revival arrangements, but Mark and I have basically told him to get over that. I really like the show and the music is fun. Thanks for your hard work. :)

Larry, just caught up on yesterday's posts. We're using, 2 trumpets, 1 trombone, 1 horn, drums, 3 reeds (no oboe/english horn), 1 violin, 1 'cello, guitar, bass, harp and keyboard (piano, and celeste - and the 16 meausres of calliope :P ) We've had to thin it out a bit as our pit is not that deep and it's not covered so it's a bit strong for what we need, but it's working out fine. The director moans nightly about not having the Broadway revival arrangements, but Mark and I have basically told him to get over that. I really like the show and the music is fun. Thanks for your hard work. :)

I am thoroughly embroiled in controversy over at the Film Score Monthly Message Board.
Talk about serendipity. I went there to check out the threads, and discovered that the complete mini series Masada was released on DVD a few days ago (I had the truncated version on VHS).
Masada was my introduction to the work of Clive Francis, who stars as the Tribune/Spy, along with a few other actors...
Now I'm off to Amazon to order it!

I've much reading to do. The shipment from Jessica's Biscuit finally arrived, so I've six new books to dive into.
(This should keep me out of trouble for a little while.)
Not to mention the arrival of the Doctor Who: New Beginnings boxed set, covering the return of The Master and the switch from Tom Baker's Doctor (the Fourth) to Peter Davison's (the Fifth). I'm savoring these, one episode at a time... a great warmup to the final three stories of the current Doctor Who season on Sci-Fi.
I have been doing that also by revisiting some classic eppies. I would love to get a copy of the FOX movie that was done some years ago. Granted it was not great but it would be a nice addition to my collection. I have some of each doctor and the new series.

I'd imagine an answering machine would get overloaded too quickly, and having an actual person taking the messages(and blowing the caller off by not passing it on) is more efficient.

I concluded my afternoon with today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. The gay storyline was rpominent today. At one point it looked like the final break-up between luke and Noah. Then on the previews, it seemed like all wasn't exactly over between them. Very soap opera-ish!
That was my thought also. I have been following it and seems to be decently written. Thank god the writer from PASSIONS has not touched this story.

Yes, it was elmore's Brainchild to insert the Oz quote - I love that sort of thing, so I was delighted when I heard it. All our stuff is now in the theater. Of course, we can't have a day without drama, so our wireless mic, which NYMF agreed to let us have and which was part of a rather large enhancement package we all paid for, was delivered (apparently), but - wait for it - no one can FIND IT. So, they're saying it will cost me $250 to get one, and I've told them in no uncertain terms to have the mic there tomorrow at a cost of $0 or I will cause them more misery than they can possibly imagine. We went right to the head of the organization, who promised he'd deal with it first thing in the morning. The ineptitude is the worst I've ever seen. Deliveries made with no one from NYMF to accept them, so stuff gets lost or sent to the wrong venue, it just never stops. I will say this - darling Noel and darling FJL opening the second week, will get the benefit of the crap that we early openers have to deal with. By the time they go up, all of us will have sorted out all of it. Much better to open later - let the early guys all have the pain and suffering. :)

From what I understand, the Fox movie is simply not available here in the United States. It has been released in England, as Doctor Who - The Movie, but there are licencing problems on this side of the pond. Your best bet would be to order it from England, and while you're at it order yourself a British-compatable DVD player.

I will have a blast in New York, no matter what the situation at the office. It really isn't that big a deal to close the office for a couple days.

It isn't. But this is really closer to a lay off. Nadia never pretended she could do the things she can't do. I thought I could work with her and teach her what I need her to do. There is just way more to teach than I thought there would be and I just don't have time to do it. She is excellent with my clients and has done a great job interpreting. She has a great personality and I wish her nothing but the best. I see it as I hired an interpreter when I need a secretary. That isn't her fault. I think it's fair to give her a couple weeks severence pay.

Nah...what I said here was that I went to the Film Score Monthly Forums to "check on the threads" and discovered that Masada had just been released as a DVD.
I thought about editing my post there to clarify that I hadn't originally gone there in search of info on SF movies, but then didn't. But once I discovered that was indeed what the thread was about, and since I did find all the information interesting, I said so.
(And signed up there with the intent of pumping yet more information about such sf scores out of the knowledgeable.)

So...
After rehearsal, I met a friend for drinks at "special interest" establishment. It turned out that our bartender is a singer - operatically trained - and that he has an audition on Monday for some scholarship competition... And his accompanist just bailed on him, so... Since my Sunday Poppins rehearsal has been changed - the girls will be watching the show that day - well... -I just hope he sings well. ???

Well, I hope you know why I had the kneejerk reaction - there is long history with MMM being a very wacky and slightly demented person who is basically off his rocker about certain subjects and posts all these things without offering a shred of proof - especially in the case of Robinson Crusoe on Mars, in which he avers that Fred Steiner wrote portions of the score. He even referenced a quote in a book that said so. But what the quote really said was that Mr. Steiner orchestrated and arranged a few cues from Mr. Van Cleave's already-written music. A big difference there, as you might imagine. And he'd done this same thing in a much bigger way with Franz Waxman and his Oscar-winning score to A Place In The Sun. So, after an enforced (by the owner of that board) three week "vacation" the first thing he does is come into a thread I began to once again muddy the waters and make statements he really can't back up. In other words, he just states Steiner wrote portions of the score, when Steiner didn't actually write ANY original music.

PAN'S LABYRINTH was an outstanding film....I liked it a lot....very different than what I thought it would be....with some extreme violence...
But I liked the story and the actors.....

I knew I was getting into the deep end of the pool at the last class (Access 3) which was about macros but this one is over my head.
I don't honestly think I shall ever really use it but I will say that it was nice to at least get a sample of some real programing.

I also keep forgetting to mention how much I enjoyed the tape of Mr Andre Previn's opera of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE starring friend of birthday boi DR ELMORE - and new friend of MR BK - Rodney Gilfry.
Outstanding music and some very good performances. Rodney was a terrific Stanley, although he only lost his shirt in the shower scene....and Renee Fleming as Blanche and Elizabeth Futral as Stella were both good as well. Anthony Dean Griffey who is built rather stoutly...was just not my idea of Mitch....but there you are.
Fleming was especially good in the second act when Blanche gets desperate. Her "come on" to Stanley in the first act was a bit strong for me....character wise.
If you like Opera....and you haven't seen this.....give it a try.

Two of his ideas ended up on our table last night. The first was a honey-lemon rockfish fillet. Slice a lemon crosswise, 1/4 inch thick, lay them down in a line and set the fillet on top of them, skin side down. Season with salt and pepper, and then add a drizzle of honey. Transfer to a grill or oven and cook for ten to fifteen minutes. Delish. But I suggest using a mild honey, as a strongly flavored one will overpower the fish.
I once concocted a similar dish using chicken breasts and a bit of rosemary. I named it Rosemary's Chicken. It was a big hit.

I just had to pop in and see what kind of day our Birthday Boy is having. I hope it was a wonderful one!
DR Danise! Thanks for asking. I had a quiet day, very pleasant, lots of nice cards, some funny e-cards online, a birthday package from Nursie Jane which I plan to share tomorrow with the cast and band, several books fromAmazon.com, a wonderful call from our DR Jose, and - best of all - a job. Next week is the 100th Anniversary of the Plazxa Hotel and I'll be writing a 7-9 minute medley of theatre music from 1907 on for which a fireworks display will be timed, It looks as though I'll take a song from every decade, so I'll cover 1907, 1917, 1927, 1937, etc. I'll have to omit some seasons but it will occupy my non-NYMF time and non-Toyland for about the next five days.
There was also a call from my brother Randy with good news about an offer on my dad's property. And at around 9 pm, the Macbeths called. They ca work me into a frenzy with their vacillating friendliness and hostility and I refuse to let them con me. All in all, a wonderful day. And the weather was spectacular!

I also keep forgetting to mention how much I enjoyed the tape of Mr Andre Previn's opera of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE starring friend of birthday boi DR ELMORE - and new friend of MR BK - Rodney Gilfry.
That reminds me: both Rodney and his daughter Carin called with birthday felicitations, as did my friend Betty from the Library of Congress. She had just come from dinner with Ron Raines, Debbie Gravitte, and Jason Graae, who are performing tomorrow night in a salute to Jerry Herman.

Honestly, she is just learning the legal terms. She was a medical interpreter and although she's good, she doesn't understand some of the legal terminology, I have 3 other interpreters who are court certified and who I can call any time I need assistance.

Callie is much better tonight. She gave Boo a bath, Boo wasn't so sure about it, then they both curled up (near each other but not touching) and are napping.
Callie has her follow up at the vet in the morning. I do not want her to have to go back for more misery. I think it will be good news, but one never knows...

Not sure I understand the question about real time. But one of the worst musicals I ever saw on Broadway featured a huge clock on the set. I kept staring at it thinking “That can’t be the real time; some crew member must have control of how slow that clock turns.” Longest hour I ever spent. Such Good Friends is nothing like that.
On rehearsals: for way too long the creative team consisted of no one but me. Director Marc Bruni joined in June and then the retooling was attended to by the two of us. Now, we have the great minds of ten brilliant comic actors. And that’s a lot of minds with the musical director and choreographer. 14, if you’ve kept count. Any given wrinkle gets ironed out by a dozen or more solutions. And today, the stage manager threw in a very good idea. So 15. Marc and I get to pick from an embarrassment of riches.
Each day requires me to make tons of little adjustments. When a scene is being staged, there’s all sorts of discussion of motivations, subtext, the reasons every step is taken, every word is said. There’s a lot of comic invention. “How about if we try this?” And one change often requires another. A line must go, or be moved, or a new one must be written. Music cues are constantly being adjusted. It’s a lot to keep up with.
No one appears to be calmer than my musical director. He’s got an amazingly easy-going nature about him. When Marc asked for added excitement in the final verse of a particular song, Michael instantly came up with the idea of taking ten bars or so in double time. Another modulation? Natch. While he was entering that change on his laptop, I was writing out a new set of harmonies. Not on music paper, mind you; I had none with me. I just wrote down the letters of what all the men should sing. And I’d done this in the wrong key, since we’d just decided on that extra modulation. So, a few minutes later, Michael taught the men their harmonies, and they sounded like the barbershop group from The Music Man. Our exciting ending had arrived in short order.
I love these days, and am not looking forward to the upcoming day when I’m told the script must be frozen. But how wonderful to have actors who are so willing to process new pages, to roll with the punches, and to offer brilliant suggestions: Liz Larsen, Brad Oscar, Jeff Talbott, Lynne Wintersteller, Dirk Lumbard, Shannon O'Bryan, Joshua James Campbell, Blake Whyte, Laura Jordan and Michael Thomas Holmes.

I went back and read the thread more carefully, and what that quote said was that Steiner's "(...work)"consisted of ghostwriting and orchestrating from thematic material that Van Cleave had already composed.
Now, I know nothing about music and I admit it freely. Is the term "ghost-written," code for just doing orchestration and arrangement? Because I would have thought it meant writing music in the same style as the original composer.
But if that's the only quote that ever references that Steiner did work on the movie...not much to go on as to how much he actually contributed...

It means Van Cleave probably didn't have time to do everything himself and had Steiner orchestrate and write cues FROM HIS THEMATIC MATERIAL. In other words, not Steiner music, but Van Cleave music arranged and orchestrated by Steiner. Ghostwritten simply means sans credit, but since he didn't write his own themes it's mis-used in this context.
In other words, when Elmer Bernstein found himself in a pinch with Heavy Metal, some of THAT score WAS ghost written by his orchestrator - not using Mr. Bernstein's actual thematic material, but writing his own sans credit. It happens.
But, Steiner, for example, wrote some of Star Trek - The Motion Picture when Mr. Goldsmith ran out of time - it doesn't mean Mr. Goldsmith didn't write the score, though, it means Mr. Steiner came in and used Goldsmith's stuff in cues arranged by him instead of Goldsmith himself.
Or, in The Producers, would you give Glen Kelly co-composer credit with Mr. Brooks, because he took Brooks' chicken scratches and arranged them into cohesive musical material? Of course not. It's Brooks, with wonderful arrangements by Glen Kelly.

I bought the original issue of DARK VICTORY. later, when Warners set up a box set for the first Bette Davis box, they included a remastered DARK VICTORY as an inducement for buying to double dip. I resisted and bought the discs from the box that I didn't already have (and I bought them used).
So, I don't know about the quality of the remastered DV. I certainly thought the original looked fine, but Warners did a sensational remaster on THE MALTESE FALCON, and they may have done the same for DARK VICTORY.

I began my evening of viewing with two more BONES episodes. The first concerned the discovery of a body of a little girl who was a beauty contest winner. Sad story from many angles. The actress who played the little girl's mother also plays the bubbly resident on GREY'S ANATOMY.

The second BONES episode involved the world of underground extreme fighting. I remembered this episode very distinctly from the previous season, so it was fun seeing Brennan winning in Vegas and Booth made a very hot fighter.

Next, I watched the new Kelsey Grammer/Patricia Heaton comedy BACK TO YOU. I only laughed a couple of times, so I didn't find the pilot especially winning. I do love actor Ty Burrell, so I was glad to see him a part of the company. He had a couple of dole comments in his patented style.
