Well, in spite of all of tonight's frustrations from a crew/creative team standpoint, I have to say morale backstage was through the roof.

Coming off of last night, we were basically ready for whatever response the audience might give us - and when we held for near 40 minutes, we figured "what the hell - let's just do this show for ourselves"...and then, everything worked like gang-busters (thanks in a huge part to the self-referential lines of some of the nonsense that happened).

In a weird beautiful way, we found our show tonight.  And for that, I can't be more excited for Tuesday!

We had our moments tonight - I mean, there was lots of unexpected stuff that happened, but THAT'S the magic of theatre, whether or not anyone likes it.  I mean, we could lock in every single gag a certain way and do that over and over, but at that point, we might as well do it once and film it and call it quits.

Everything that happened tonight - good and bad - is exactly why we go to see theatre.  And it is nights like these that I crave as an actor...especially in a show like this, where you pull the audience into the jokes so often.  The more everyone is laughing together, the better the whole experience - which is precisely what tonight was.
Title: Re:THE NYMF NIGHTMARE
Post by: Cason on September 21, 2007, 11:49:20 PM
I mean, consistency is important - and for the most part, the show was the show it always is, but the way it is written, there are moments where we allow the audience to (sometimes literally) participate and we just have to play off of that.  It's the conceit of it, it's what makes me so excited to go out there and have high expectations of the audience.  Sometimes that makes you fall flat on your face (last night) and sometimes that's the thing that makes you soar (tonight).

I think the show surprised some people in the cast tonight - and now they know how it works when it works...and then BJ and I were spending the whole evening just basking in the feeling that we had so often in LA.  So, you never know - but tonight was one of the nights I'll take with me for a long time - in spite of our technical difficulties.

Cason, that is one one of the beauties of the craft. Taking everything into consideration, weighing it and then flying with it. If it works, that is all the better, if now try a different approach.

It is fun to watch actors engage the viewers, it makes them part of the story and part of the joke or gag.

The rewarding nights as an actor are the most fun when you feel it click with the audience...

From the sounds of it Cason, so would I....

I am looking forward to hearing you guys knocking it out of the ballpark on Tuesday....

The other pearl is that audience saw through the technical problems and paid attention to the story that the actors were telling. A compliment!

I think the point is as I always say: There are two ways to approach things - positively and negatively, and I always try the former as hard as it is sometimes.  NYMF cheaped out on all venues and brought in the worst sound equipment imaginable and now they are going to have to make it right and pay that price.  I've told them in no uncertain terms that we will not play on Tuesday unless our sound designer is paid (by them) to come in on Tuesday morning, deal with whatever the new board is, and make sure our show disc is working and that all those written cues work with the new board.  Of course, long before Tuesday they have to deal with the problems, as there are shows every day - luckily for the show tomorrow, they don't play until four-thirty, so they'll get the benefit of our travails and NYMF's now having to fix everything before their show.  Believe me, these discussions are only beginning.

In any case, the cast chose the right route and the show played like gangbusters.  I'm amused that some of the cast were surprised by how well it worked, based on only our opening night performance as a barometer.  They should know better, frankly - we never even had a damn preview or even a damn proper tech - there was no way the opening performance was going to land, especially as we'd just done a completer, full-on run-through just three hours before - finishing exactly ninety minutes before doing opening night.

IMHO, they have messed up big time. Perhaps I am ignorant of how things are done but it is a disservice to the show trying to impress the audience and critics for future venues or perhaps for further production.

They should be ashamed of themselves. If they want the shows to be professional in spirit they should also conduct themselves professionally.

That means they should be using workable equipment and have and avenues to make the best presentation possible within a fair budget.

Ha - there's nothing classy about it.
It's just something you do - you either pick up the line and keep the scene going or just stand there and expect the actor to get on track by him/herself...which in my humble opinion is pretty petty and makes you look just as foolish.

As our (wonderful) musical director said tonight, "It's past time for details right now - we're in survival mode."   :P

I feel your pain.

When I was playing Capt Fisby the Teahouse of the August Moon I had a similar "rescue the show moment". Many of the scenes opened with Sakini (the Okinawan houseboy) doing a monologue which I then interrupted and we then went into the scene which his monologue has set up. One night he went on stage in ACT One and launched into a monologue from ACT Two! I was speechless in the wings when the director pushed me forward hissing "do something!. So on stage I went with a "Hello, Sakini" much to his surprise. I hastily improvised a bunch of lines trying to pull him back to Act One. He kept giving me very strange looks while he threw back answers until the light dawned and he launched into the correct monologue. After the show the Director said it all really worked out; we both stayed in character and the audience was probably none the wiser (unless they noticed the repeated monologue lines in Act Two!)

Good Morning!

I'm up, well... I'm still up...  Just been watching some TV, and chatting with my roomies.  -We're all trying to make sure we sleep in tomorrow... and not hear the doorbell... Since "the roomie" has a new bed being delivered tomorrow morning "sometime"... Of course, she's currently out of town this week for a wedding, so...  -But she did say we could leave it in the hallway... Hmm...  -And I'm also wondering if she told the delivery people that there are steps to deal with, since many delivery places charge extra for bringing large items up a set of stairs...  Well... We'll see...

In any case, now that BK has explained the "technical difficulties"...

While sitting in the lounge of Theatre Row, Shawn and I - and Brad and Diego - were entertained by the number of tech guys running in and out of the lobby with various laptops.  Sometimes a Mac.. Some a PC running Windows 2000... A PC running Windows Vista... "Can you try to e-mail me the files?"... "Oh, it's not compatible with this version of the software"... etc., etc., etc.  :-\

If anything, it provided a nice window of time for the four of us to have a nice pre-show chat and catch-up session.  ;)

As for worst mishap on stage, hmm...

Well, the first incident that comes to mind happened the during the previews of Lestat.  The opening of the show was just not working, and they tried a couple of options.  The one option that seemed to work the best during rehearsals was finally instituted one night.  Since there were a lot of lighting and automation cues, they had set up a click-track so that everything would coordinate.  Well...

We're all sitting there waiting for the lights to go down, and to see if the new opening worked.  The lights go down, we hear the pre-show announcement, and the conductor's cue light goes off - which is the signal for the start of the show.  As soon as the first downbeat was given... We start hearing the click-track counting down in our headphones.. "1 - 2 - 3 - 4"... I looked over at the other keyboard player who was also on headphones, and I could that we were both wondering if we should start again... Or if they were going to go ahead and stop the show a few measures in just to make sure we got the opening correct... In the meantime, the conductor is conducting up a storm... Then we notice him look up at the stage... Then we hear the click track change tempe... Then we all notice the conductor just looking around wondering what to do... Realizing that he had jumped the gun...  So, we finish the Opening Sequence, and sure enough, the cue light starts blinking on the podium - which is the signal to pick up the stage management phone.  And, even thought we couldn't hear what was being said, just following the looks on Brad's face for those couple of moments was, well, for lack of a better word, priceless.

*And I believe he bought the drinks for the band that night.  :)

**And we never did try that version of the opening in front of an audience.

***And the following night, the other keyboard player and I who were on closed circuit cameras up on the seventh floor made big signs that we held up to the conductor's camera:  "1 - 2 - 3 - 4".

I guess that was more of a pit mishap rather than a stage mishap, but...

During the closing weekend of the show, when we had to switch out Lestat's during intermission since Hugh was sick...  We got to the ending sequence of the show, where we played this brief "falling music".  We played it.  Then got cued to play it again.  Pregnant pause.  Then play it again.  And again, but holding the last note for a while...

Turns out, since they had gotten the understudy prepped very fast during intermission, they weren't able to secure his wig fully, so it started falling off his head.... And since the mic was sewn into the wig... Well...  The actor eventually tore the wig off in order to finish the show.

NYTIMES (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/22/arts/television/22ghostley.html?_r=1&ref=todayspaper&oref=slogin)

Alice Ghostley, Comic TV and Stage Actress, Is Dead

Quote
By STUART LAVIETES

Alice Ghostley, a Tony Award-winning actress who became known to television viewers for her roles as dizzy sidekicks on “Bewitched” and “Designing Women,” died yesterday at her home in Studio City, Calif. Her age was usually given as 81.

The cause was cancer, said a longtime friend, the actress Kaye Ballard, who said that she was actually about two years older.

Ms. Ghostley made more than 90 television appearances in a career that spanned six decades. She was a regular on the situation comedy “Bewitched” from 1966 through 1972, playing Esmeralda, a shy, bumbling witch whose spells never worked, who caused unintentional havoc whenever she sneezed and who turned invisible when she became nervous.

From 1986 through 1993, she played a more-than-usually wacky neighbor, Bernice Clifton, on the hit show “Designing Women.” In one episode, plastic surgery gone awry gives her a pig’s nose, which she wears with aplomb, then with mounting embarrassment until it is repaired. She also appeared in “Evening Shade,” “Love, American Style” and “Mayberry R.F.D.”.

While essentially a comic actress, she won a Tony for best supporting actress in 1965 for her performance in a drama, “The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window,” by Lorraine Hansberry, author of “A Raisin in the Sun.” Ms. Ghostley played the conventional sister of the show’s star, Rita Moreno.

Ms. Ghostley also received a Tony nomination in 1963 for her performance in “The Beauty Part,” a fantasy by S. J. Perelman.

Alice Margaret Ghostley was born in Eve, Mo. She first attracted notice in “New Faces of 1952,” one in a series of Broadway revues staged by the producer Leonard Sillman; that edition helped start the careers of Paul Lynde, Eartha Kitt and Carol Lawrence. Ms. Ghostley’s big moment was her rendering of the song “The Boston Beguine,” a sendup of proper Bostonians.

Good morning, all! I deliberately said little about last night's situation because I wanted to keep the ball in BK's court.  Now that all has been revealed, I can only add that, having survived 2 NYMF shows last year, it all seems that the more things change the more they remain the same.

BK, Ron got in early from DC, spent the day at the soap, and Dona was in a dress at the Met for ROMEO ET JULIETTE.  After the show, they told me how much fun it was and to give everyone their best; I thought he was going to wait to see his friend Rob Evan, who he thought was a perfect Fred, but he said to tell Rob howdy and he'd talk to him later. After that, they were outa there.  I know he went out into the lobby to schmooze at intermission, and I'm sure he was looking for you.

As a big believer in amplified sound to a limited degree, I think it helps for the audience to work a bit, not to merely be washed over by sound, and that may have been beneficial to the show as well.  Kudos to the cast, the band, and the crew.

Whew!  Sound problems.  The NYMF people should be fined or penalized when problems like this happen.  They have a responsibility to their producers but a GREATER responsibility to the paying audience who shouldn't be expected to "understand" that it's a festival and "these things happen."

BUT it sounds as if the cast stepped up and did what had to be done, and it was very enjoyable reading DR CASON's reflections on the evening.

So, I'm outa here as well: I've got a trek to Toyland for sme editorial guidelines, then a meeting at Tony Walton's about a possible project. I can say no more, but it's something I would love to do.

After that, my only goal is to finish laying out the sketch for the Plaza Hotel event.  We settled on the orchestration yesterday, and tomorrow from 1-3 we assemble in the 72nd Street rehearsal studios to finalize the arrangement and to make a tracking tape for the fireworks crew.

The NYMF people should be fined or penalized when problems like this happen.

Remember, any fines imposed on the NYMF people will be reflected in higher fees and ticket prices next year! Penalize them enough, and the festival will be cancelled.

Sad to hear about Alice Ghostly.

Unfortunatly more and more of the greats are going to leave us. I don't think that there are that many "stars" left.

I will remember her from Bewitched, Designing Women, Cinderella (50's version) and The Julie Andrews Hour.

And although I never saw the episode and do not know if they had any scenes together Bruce Kimmel worked (maybe) with Alice Ghostly in the final episode of Ghost Story called: Time Of Terror also with Patricia Neal and Craig Stevens.

Saturday morning greetings!  Today's an information-waitressing day for me and right now I'm trapped working at the Computer Services Desk.

TOD - DR Elmore and I met when we were both cast in an awful production of Auntie Mame.  The flaming drinks got out of hand and caught the sofa on fire.  The "actor" playing Mr. Upson, wanting to get rid of his glass of fire, turned casually to the "actress" playing the maid and said, "Nora, would you take this please?" and placed the glass on her tray.

Ask DR Elmore about the nose dive I took off the edge of the stage during dress rehearsal for You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, which he directed.

However, the front door buzzer did not but until 10:30, so... But I was still sort of in "sleep mode"... But since I have rehearsal in a few hours, well..

It turns out, "she" really was just getting a bed delivered today - well, a new bed frame, headboard, footboard.  Thankfully, the delivery guy said she had paid for site-to-site delivery - I didn't bother to ask if she had paid for on-site set-up too.  So, he brought her new iron (heavy!) bed upstairs and put the pieces in her room.  And that's that.

Worst mishap I've ever seen onstage was the actor playing/skating Rusty (a black hsired actor) in STARLIGHT EXPRESS wrapping himself around one of the girders at the Gershwin Theater during the first big race sequence. Somehow he got backstage and in the next scene where Rusty appeared, a blonde actor was Rusty. The switch was mentioned over the sound system in the middle of the show, also a first for me.

I can't remember any real accidents in any shows I've done. I remember the actor playing Glad Hand in WEST SIDE STORY totally went up on his lines during the gym sequence (which he more or less runs) the night the performance was being taped and various Jets and Sharks had to help him out to keep the sequence going.

The girl I was dancing with in "The Spanish Panic" in ONCE UPON A MATTRESS had one of her boobs pop out of her costume in the middle of the frenzied number, but even though we were in front (I played Sir Harry), I don't think anyone saw for the few seconds it was visible.

TOD there are two that come to mind.   The first was our high school production of THE MOUSE THAT ROARED.  I was one if the WACs and at one point near the end of the show we enter with our feet dyed purple from stomping grapes.   The production was in our high school little theater and there was no back stage to speak of, so we would exit, go outside, dye our feet and come back in (or something like that)

Well one night we started talking and realized we missed our entrance. It was one of those "Look I see them coming" type of entrances...we didn't know what to do....so they ad libbed a little and just after they had gone on in the script we decided to enter.  Boy did that throw things off.
Everyone tried to recover, one of us threw in a line about being lost, and then the giggles broke out. We were close enough to the end that we did finish the show, but it was a disaster

The other was a community theater production of THE MUSIC MAN.  Not knowing what to use for a lamp post, our director decided to use one of those kick balls painted white on top of a post.   It actually looked pretty good, but unbeknownst to the quartet members, it wasn't attached to the post, just balanced up there.   So, you guessed it, one performance in the middle of the quartet's big number, one of them decided to lean against the post....the ball fell off the post and bounced right into the audience amid much laughter from the audience

It's a nice small (cramped) place.  It was a "hot" place a few years ago, but the hype seems to have died down lately.  I've also heard that they down-sized some of their bakery selections in favor of increasing their lunch and dinner offerings.  But it's just over on Madison Ave., so...  Could be worth the walk.

Here, here, aye, aye and all that!  I agree!

I hate mics cause they're always screwing up -- our sound issues have plagued us every night of our run -- someone's is always not working, at some point there's always feed back at least one show, I hate how you can see those little things taped on people's faces (I mean, it's sooo not obvious it's a little mic and the audience is sooo fooled by the flesh colored tape -- they'll never notice the characters have stuff taped all over their faces, right?), you'll have a scene where it's obvious one character's mic is on and the other's mic is off, sound that is on a mic sounds like, well, sound on a mic and not pure, etc., etc., etc. It's all very distracting and takes away from the "magic" in my 2-cents' worth opinion.

It makes you wonder how shows managed before all this "advancement"(she says very sarcastically) in technology -- I think it was some bygone phrases like projection ... diction ... some kind'a words like that.... oh, and venues built with acoustics in mind ... but I will concede that for musicals the issue in the smaller houses is that when those combos and bands get going and aren't down in a pit, it can be hard to hear the singers over them. At our pit-less house, the band is right there stage right (in our case on this show a mere three feet from that edge of our set, grrrrr) ...and the majority of our partons are aged 70-plus so hearing is already an issue before they even walk through the door ...so what cha gonna do?

Believe me, I hate what they've done to sound in theaters.  But they've now ruined it for others.  Now they mic straight plays, for God's sake.  Because audiences have been taught to expect loud obnoxious sound levels, it now seems weird to them when they don't get them, even in small venues.  I'd much rather go not acoustic, but with shotgun mics at the foot of the stage (the way A Chorus Line was originally miked) and the band subtly reinforced so they can be mixed to sound good together.

Karen, you just echoed an acquaintance of mine's comments about micking (sp?). He stated that kids in theatre are not taught projection anymore and it really concerns him for many small theatres cannot afford fancy systems and in his opinion they often make the listeners and the actors lazy. He also cited that many are not taught how to project little speak corrrectly. It annoys him to use mics. He does teach his to use projection and diction. He also REQUIRES them to take a speech class he designed for theatre majors.

He blames aspects of the culture today in which we live and the fact that those who teach the arts in some places do not have a clue of what they are doing.

TOD:  The two experiences that come to mind in terms of stage experiences that make you just hold your breath and try to get through the scene (other than already noted experience) come from when I was back in Prescott.

1)  I did a production of Fiorello! during my sophomore year of high school at the PFAA (the community theatre where my mom just did Suburb).  For those of you who are familiar with the show, I played Neil, the young up-and-coming intern for Fiorello, but I also doubled as a "Hack" in the poker scenes...which put me in about every scene.  To distinguish the characters, I had on a big fake moustache for when I was a "hack" (I see the jokes coming from this a mile away, der Brucer ;) ), and on our opening night, during "The Bum Won," of course it decided to start slowly and comically sliding off my face.  Luckily I had a newspaper which I promptly threw up in front of my face, as I was laughing away as well as a couple of the other guys in the song.  The audience, of course, ate it up, as they watched me inch my way back behind all of the other guys, but the best moment came near the end of the song where as we were exiting, the moustache very obviously fell out from behind the paper and I had to step on it and slide it off.

Then shortly thereafter in the last scene, "Morris" starts off the scene where he's on the phone with his wife...only that night, our "Morris" misjudged the time he had and when the lights came up, he wasn't on stage (later we were told he was in the bathroom) and so all of that were on stage did a quick check-in and wondered how we were going to cover.  So I quickly ran up to the phone and started improvising some of the dialogue that I happened to remember of the conversation that he has with "his wife" and did so until I saw him ready to make his entrance, which he did and threw the line to him "Morris, your wife's on the phone and she's really going on about you not being home and with the kids..." and he took it and started his lines and we made it through safe and sound.  Later that evening he wrote on a one-dollar bill "Thanks for saving my ass" and gave it to me - as my first professional dollar I ever earned working in the theater.  :)

2)  During the run of "Fiddler" I did as a senior in high school, the big "Tevye's Dream" sequence, as any of you who have done or even seen the show, can be a nightmare (pun intended) to stage.  Our technical designers went back and forth on how to have Fruma Sarah come in - should we fly her?  Should she come up from the stage floor?  Should she be on top of something?  It was finally decided that she would be sitting at the top of a ladder, strapped in, while the ladder was secured to a dolly navigated by someone underneath the ladder, and all covered in black material.  We worked it over and over to make sure the girl underneath knew what was going on and it was all safe and comfortable for all concerned.

So, we get to the 4th show in our run, and sadly no one had the foresight when we had teched the number to remember that there was going to be dry ice machines pumping out fog on either side of the stage, one strategically placed right near where Fruma Sarah makes her entrance.  For those of you that may not know, dry ice machines (as opposed to fog machines) create condensation right around where they blast out the fog...

About 5 seconds after Fruma Sarah comes out, we all see the whole thing start to topple over and panic ran through everyone of our hearts.  Thankfully they were far enough away from the pit that Fruma Sarah didn't fall into that, and in fact she just kept on singing away on the ground.  The girl underneath was really shaken up, but not hurt - but it brought the show to a halt.  They closed the curtains, and the tech people ran out to check the two girls.  Once we had everything under control, our director went out and made an announcement to the effect of "Live theatre, what can you do, right?"  Then we took the scene from the top and Fruma Sarah came out sans ladder that time - and did so for the rest of the run.

Needless to say, when I (playing Tevye) am trying to figure out with Hodel and Perchik how to break the new to Golde that I've given them my blessing later in the show, the line "How will I tell your mother?  ...Another dream?!" had a WHOLE new context, and managed to get a huge laugh out of the crowd.  :)

This would be relating to comments that Jose made a while back about people not being prepared to for auditions.

This acquaintance of mine  has been to several auditions for colleges in the midwest for the grad program. He also cites the lack of preparation and 'fire' in those who want to get into grad school programs. The auditions where has has been they do not mic the stage. They want to hear projection and desire.

Stage disasters?  Hmmm, speak about givens. I just thought those are always part of doing a show. I've been a part of and witnessed so many, I don't even know where to start.  The "joy" of live theatre!!

TOD - do backstage disasters count?  Another production that DR Elmore and I worked on together was Menotti's The Medium, for which I had to help the character of the daughter with a quick costume change into a very gauzy creation.  The diva playing the mother insisted that Velcro closures would speed up the dressing process.  That stuff stuck to that fabric in all the wrong places and it was a mess!

I love the poster for DR PennyO's show...did she do the artwork, I wonder?

Hiya - no, actually the artist is Virginia Downs of Palm Springs - she does religious art for calendars... I did see one set of note cards she had designed and fell in love with it, since it is exactly a picture of one scene in my novel - so I called and asked her if I could use it. I did a little Photoshop futzing with it - made the eyes more like mine, changed the hair, put the red color in, etc. I've gone back to the original white hair of the original art, for now...

It concerns negotiations between stage hands union and the producers. The producers are threatening a lockout if they do not sign by 9-30.

The most recent onstage accident I witnessed was in the CLO production of OKLAHOMA! earlier this year:  Jud and Curly are in the smokehouse about to shoot a knot in the woodwork, when the gun won't go off.  They passed it back it forth a couple of times before Shirley Jones (as Aunt Eller) came onstage shouting, "I thought I heard a couple of guys out here trying to shoot a gun."

Personally, in the closing performance of FUNNY/FORUM, the incredibly hunky Miles Gloriosus, who quite unfortunately had a not-so-secret crush on me, decided that since I had my own date in the house, he would punish me during the funeral by punching me (as Hysterium).  The punch landed, pardon the expression, in the nether regions - and being a beautiful dead virgin at the time, there was absolutely NOTHING I could do to retaliate. . .ooooh, the pain.  ooooh, the anger.  After exiting, I had to be physically restrained from coming in contact with Miles and my stuff was quickly moved from the men's communal dressing room, to the ladies, so that I would Mr. Miles would not have to face my wrath.

When doing EQUUS, the second night of the run, the power went out one third of the way into the first act -well, just as the beach scene with Alan's parents and the horseman was about to begin.  After waiting for a powerful return, we polled the audience, who chose to HEAR the rest of the show as if it were being done on radio with only candlelight.

While in THE MISANTHROPE, updated to 1980s Hollywood, I had a quick change (30 seconds) into short-shorts and tank top, more often than not, the first time that I would sit in the next scene, parts of my anatomy not meant to be seen. . .well, this is a family site. . .you're all smart enough to fill in the blanks.

I've seen a few things, many years ago when I was at the theatre on a regular basis.

Community theater performance of Sleuth in St. Paul, MN, when Andrew was supposed to shoot Milo with a gun...or rather pretend to shoot him...the gun wouldn't go off...

Guthrie's all-black production of A Death of a Salesman... the power went out during the final funeral scene and it was all done via ...candles, or something. (I wasn't there to see that, actually, but I read about it the next day.  Must have happened on opening night!)

Guthrie's production of Private Lives...actor playing Elyot was supposed to come on stage with a tray full of glasses...but dropped them off stage. We all heard the crash.  (I was there for this.)    There was a long silence, as if someone was swearing beneath their breath.  Then the actor called, loudly, for Amanda to "bring the glasses, will you" and made his own entrance, sans tray.

Guthrie production of the History Cycle - Henry V. The actress playing Katherine got her very elaborate dress stuck on a nail or something on the stage floor and couldn't move. It was in the middle of a heated exchange with Henry V...I think finally she just reached down and rippppped the expensive costume free.

Sound problems?  In New York?  What next?  Liza Minnelli lip-syncing?

Hi folks! Know how I'm always saying I have to sign off because of the storms in area?  Well, the other night I didn't sign off fast enough and my modem got fried.

I was lucky it wasn't the computer or anything else.  The strange thing was that I didn't hear any lightning or thunder around me, just off in the distance.

The lights went off then on (they do that all the time with no harm done) and the next thing I knew, I kept getting error messages that I was on line/I was off line/I was on line, one right after the other!

Anyway I had to wait unil today for the guy from RoadRunner to come and fix the problem.  Well, half of the problem.  I got a new modem but the router I use was hit as well and that's not covered.

That means I won't have any phone service (except for my cell phone) until I go over to Best Buy and get a new Vontage router.  Scum.  :-\ :(

I was lucky it wasn't the computer or anything else.  The strange thing was that I didn't hear any lightning or thunder around me, just off in the distance.

I guess I should have rephrased that part.  It was something else (the router) but I was thinking in terms of the new printer or my monitor.

Must apologize for my lack of being around these past few weeks.

With a combination of the car accident, being on jury duty & also working when I can and fighting pain that has since crept on me; it has been difficult for me to catch up on everything that has happened here.

So bear with me if I ask questions that have been answered.

Belated birthday wishes to all that had birthdays.

Vibes to all those that needed them.

Thanks

I'm just glad you are alright, DR Michael.  I'm also sorry for the pain you are going thru.

Sending you pain free vibes

I've had my first taste of Fall this week or so it felt like it to me. With temps down in the 70's at night and a high in the 80's.

I know that's not cold by any means but after the high 90's it does make one feel a little chilled.  At least I do.

I've been thinking about moving to Pittsburgh but I just don't think I could handle the cold.

I did  do a house search on line and found a wonderful one not to far from where Mom and Dad are, with a dog park within 6 miles and it had a nice fenced in back yard.

If I can make the trip up for the Veterens day weekend, I might just give it a look-see but the chances of my going are very slim.

That is the cover of her book (which all dedicated H/Ks have read) and the art is by Virginia Downs.

Looks like a nice little house, Danise.

I think it is.  More then big enough for me and the dogs.

The only question would be a job.

Things aren't looking to good for my current one.  They are talking about yet another cut before December as well as the one I told you all about after the first of the year.

I'm not ashamed to say that I'm worried about it.  And if I have to start all over again someplace else my thought is it might as well be in Pittsburgh.

At least I'd be close enough to my folks so I could go and see them from time to time.

I think that's one of the things that bothers me the most since Mom passed.  I want to go by and put flowers on their graves so badly.

It would be a comfort to be close by and if you look at the map of  where that little house, is you will see Mt. Royal Cemetary is not very far from it.

I watched another episode of BONES. This was the episode that introduced Agent Sullivam (Sully) to the show and as a potential love interest for Brennan. Booth shot a clown head on an ice cream truck and was removed from active duty until he completed a psych evaluation (preisded over by the marvelous Stephen Frye.)

I then started on the MARTHA GRAHAM - DANCE ON FILM DVD from Criterion. I watched the first two films in the set. The first was a 31 minute introduction to her 11 member company and some short dance pieces done in her dance studio. I loved this section because there were no formal costumes - just these 11 exquisite bodies moving in graceful control across the room in many combinations. Mesmerizing.
Title: Re:THE NYMF NIGHTMARE
Post by: Matt H. on September 22, 2007, 03:03:24 PM
That first piece was done in 1956. The next film from 1958 was a formal filming of her legendary APPALACHIAN SPRING. Martha herself danced the bride, and of course she was way too old to be doing it, so her extensions aren't as long or graceful as a younger dancer might have brought to the role. Everyone else was sensational, and, of course, that Aaron Copeland score is unmatched.

But you can't see nudity on the radio

My acting mishap also involves Fiddler On the Roof.

When I didn't get the role I wanted (Fyedka) I decided not to do the show. Flash forward several months. I ran into the director and asked me if I would come into the show and play the rabbi. As a favor to the director I did even though I was at least 50 years too young at the time. As a matter of fact the actor who played my son Mendel was 15 year OLDER than me.

I could not grow a beard so I made one every night. One night I wasn't feeling well and I was overheating. I had to hug one of the villagers goodbye and when I did beard came off on his costume. When I noticed it I made sure my back was to audience and made a hasty exit as I still had one more scene to do. I quickly made a new beard and made it back on stage for my final bit.

Also we had trouble with our Fruma Sarah. She was on a movable chair and the chorus boys who brought her on sometimes got over enthused and almost tipped her over.

I heard about a local community theater production of Oklahoma where the house/barn fell down in the middle of a scene.  A chorus boy strolled out, surveyed the damage, and said, in character, "Look, Pa, the house just done fell down!"  And then all the chorus member rushed in to prop the thing back up.  Sort of like the barn-raising scene from Witness or Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.  :)

Oy! Such a day.  I had a good morning at Toyland and found some big errors to correct in the guidelines.  After that a wonderful 3-hour meeting at Tony Walton's about a wonderful project that I hope will indeed happen.  After that, it was back here to lay out the Plaza Hotel chart and write the transistions between numbers.  It's long right now, I believe, so I'm sure we'll play it down tomorrow and do some trimming before freezing it.

So tomorrow morning, I'll begin the guideline cleanup , go to the taping from 1-3, and then head to St Clements for the 4:30 performance of THE PIPER.

Good Evening!

Back from rehearsal...

We basically ended up running the whole show.  Twice!  Since we are currently "training" two new Jane's, we have to run everything twice.  And since the Banks children are in all but four scenes in the entire show, well..

Thankfully, we skipped over the big dance breaks today - we'll cover those on Wednesday - but, still, we basically ran the show twice today.  We run a segment with one girl, and then go back and run it again with the other one, then continue from there.  And so on and so forth.

I also caught a couple more errors in the score today too.  There was one sequence where I would constantly curse to myself since I could hear I was hitting the wrong notes.  Well, upon closer inspection, it turned out I was playing what was on the page, it was the page that was not correct.

The girls did so well today, that we 'voted' to let them watch the matinee tomorrow instead of rehearsing.  I may end up watching the show with them.  Or I may just have another day off.  We shall see.

TOD:   The entire first act of "L'Estat".  Nothing technical, although it was a tad rough during its run at the Curran Theater in San Francisco.

It's just that Act 1 was the worst theatrical disaster I ever witnessed, bar none.

Agreed. ;)

Although, I thought the finale in San Fran was also quite "rough".  Although, the six(!) different versions we tried in New York weren't relaly much better... just different.  :-\

Haven't used that...but just have a suggestion. If you have cable/satellite and get the Spanish channel... spend a week or so - or even more - just immersing yourself in the language - everything from news to their soaps to their movies. You learn a language a lot faster if you can immerse yourself in it for several hours a day.

I'm working on German... I've got a German version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerers stone, and audio CDs of the same book, also in German, so I can read along and see/hear how the words are pronounced properly - I'm finding that very helpful.

And when I need a lighter touch I try to read Mord auf dem Golfplatz, by Agatha Christie...

DR Cillaliz - I remember reading some arguments people had with the language learning theory behind the Rosetta program.  Not that it's not fine, but I'd definitely do a little research on the Internet before investing.

DR Miss Karen - What time do you get in tomorrow?  And do you have any plans for tomorrow night?  Or Monday at this point?  I believe I have a few bakeries and chocolate shops to show you.  -Oh, and I think we need to go clothes shopping for your dear Boo-Key too.

I want Monkey Cake!! ...  From the Enabler! ... The Lord willin' and the creek don't rise (and the airlines are running on time ...) I should arrive in NYC around 3-ish in the afternoon, but then taxi time, etc -- but hopefully by late afternoon I should be at the sublet on 44th.

What happened to Boo-Key's clothes?!

Hello dear assorted and sun-dried H/Ks and studlies and lovelies!

Good evening dear Esteemed BK -- glad you're having a day to catch the breath!!

I've been getting some "end-of-the-month" stuff done (a little early) as I'll be away from my computer next week.  All pretty tedious desk business, but thank God I have it to do!

And, Wednesday afternoon, I shall be parking my svelte tusch in the venerable Acorn Theatre and reveling in will-benders, and brain-assistants, and Elmo orchestrations, and BK's creation!!

And then.... food !!!

My guess - and others - is that The New York Times will do a "round-up" review of NYMF like they've done in the past.  They do collective review of the festival's offerings.  There will probably be on at the end of this week, and one the closing week of the festival.

DR Cillaliz - I remember reading some arguments people had with the language learning theory behind the Rosetta program.  Not that it's not fine, but I'd definitely do a little research on the Internet before investing.

Thanks DR Singdaw and 3D.  I took Spanish through college, had a room mate from Costa Rica and many years ago was fairly fluent.  I've been working through an interpreter for over 20 years now and since I don't really speak it anymore I've pretty much lost what I had.  I can still read it quite well and understand what people say...it's the responding and starting conversations I'm not so good at.   I'm looking for something to get me speaking quickly and watching tv and reading Spanish doesn't work that well.  Rosetta Stone makes you speak and tells you if you get it right. You can do Rosetta Stone's online edition for 3 months for $109. Which compared to the price for the disks is pretty cheap, so that's why I'm looking at it. Other suggestions are welcome..

I did watch the third of the dance films "Night Journey" which is the Oedipus story set to dance seen through Jocasta's eyes.

The three dance films produced by Nathan Kroll realy are astonishing looking. Except for one slight scratch at the very beginning of the second piece, these films look brand new. Just amazing clarity and detail.

Of course we had to have a treat on our little walk.... We both have a coffee shop we like to walk to and as you can tell... we had to have our cookie (Brain reference for the intermission)

and a drink... He had an iced coffee and I had a mocha

Thanks for those weather forecasts.  Should be a help to the NY visitors.  It has not reached 90 in the entire month of September

Oh, really - is that so?  Funny, two days ago, walking home on Tenth, there is a big gas station near 44th and at that gas station is a large thing which alternates reading out time and temperature.  According to that it was exactly ninety degrees.  So, I'd have to beg to differ.

I think it all depends how you're doing the sharing?  Vertically or horizontally?

Back from a great dinner and an enjoyable and surprise visit to Mary Poppins, about which more momentarily in the notes.

Safe journey vibes to one and all

I agree Cilla with 3D and Singdaw, If it is possible, immersion would be useful in learning a foriegn language.

Beautiful pictures, DakotaCelt. We don't really get colored leaves in the desert. Desert trees don't have big leaves. Some of the non-native trees (male mulberry) sometimes turn yellow -- but they usually just turn brown and fall off.

The article I read about this made it seem simply that they'd "experimented" a bit , it was not a "full-fledged affair". Both of them are married, for what that's worth.   ;)

I hope McCormick consulted Eve Plumb before revealing this, though.
