Title: LIKE A PERFUMED WOMAN
Post by: bk on September 22, 2007, 10:12:36 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were like a perfumed woman, and now it is time for you to post until the perfumed cows come home.

And because someone did it yesterday and I liked the idea of it, we shall start a new feature - song of the day.

And the song of the day is: WHEN I FALL IN LOVE!

One of my favorite songs with its gorgeous tune and heartfelt lyric and sentiment.  What are your favorite versions of the song?

No , no, François , the lyrics go like this....

When I fall in love,
It will be forever
Or I'll never fall in love.
In a restless world like this is,
Love is ended before it's begun
And too many moonlight kisses
Seem to cool in the warmth of the sun.

When I give my heart,
It will be completely
Or I'll never give my heart.
And the moment I can feel that
You feel that way, too,
Is when I fall in love with you.

And the moment I can feel that
You feel that way, too,
Is when I fall in love with you.

Is BK ghosting on All That Chat:

Quote
I was surprised to see a display ad in yesterday's NY Times (theatre ABC's page) for ROLLER DERBY. I had thought that all NYMF shows had, on account of AEA showcase agreement or other requirement, a rather negligible budget limit that would generally preclude expensive advertising.

I also noted the lovely color/glossy "playbill" that was distributed at this show.

Perhaps presenting it at the Ailey Dance Center liberates the producers from the financial constraints all other NYMF shows must live with.

Just wonderin'...

Last night I attended a delightful performance of our very own PennyO's show "Jewish Thighs on Broadway"...in North Bend, WA!  A couple of weeks ago, she PM'd me and said this:  "I'm doing the "family version" which means most of the really dark stuff - and the 'brief partial nudity' are OUT - replaced by a couple of extra songs."  No partial nudity?  Well, let me tell you that it wasn't needed!  She was wonderful!  And her accompanist was her very first accompanist when she did the show for the very first time seven years ago.  He was very good, as well.

It's basically a fictional account of her life...her ups and downs in the bizness of show.  I got to see her before the show started and chatted with her afterwards.  Here are a couple of pictures.  If you're only used to her avatar with her short hair, it's much longer now:

After the show, she had copies of her book available for purchase and she had posters for signing, too.  One fan brought her some beautiful roses, but she's leaving for California in the morning and didn't really have any place to put them, so she gave them to me (I've got them in water now).  I took a picture of her with them (I love this picture):

NEW YORK BRACES FOR CONTROVERSIAL VISIT OF IRANIAN PRESIDENT MAHMOUD AHMADINEJAD (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,297712,00.html)

Quote
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrives in New York Sunday amid a firestorm of controversy surrounding his visit to the United States.

Ahmadinejad, who has called the Holocaust "a myth," encouraged the destruction of Israel and supported terrorists in Iraq, will address the United Nations General Assembly and a Columbia University forum but will not be allowed to tour Ground Zero.

I am not one to be surprised by the expected. At least his assassination (surely at least an attempt) will bump OJ off of the news channels.

Good morning, all! I slept late because I will get next to no sleep until I finish the Plaza job beginning this evening.  Before the taping session at 1 today, I will go through the piece again, looking for possible cuts and maybe rewriting the ending.  I already have tickets for the 4:30 performance of THE PIPER at St Clements, and I will be seeing the show with my beloved Donna Lynne Champlin.  It should be fun.

I was indeed surprised to see Mr Coughlin's name attached to EVER AFTER; as DR Jose can attest, I really wanted the job, because I like Marcy and Zina's work and I really liked the film. Clearly, someone involved decided otherwise.  Yep, fuckem.

I spent part of the morning diving into the DVD set of WHAT ABOUT BRIAN. I watched two episodes, and I have to say so far I'm not a fan. I don't like the married/engaged couples much at all, and I don't like their condescending treatment of Brian's love life.

I don't find the writing very engaging either. It's not witty enough (shows like GREY'S ANATOMY and BROTHERS & SISTERS put the writing in this to shame).

True, I've only seen two episodes. Maybe the show gets more on track later. I'll find out as I'll be watching more episodes most of the day.

No, I am not the "ghost" on talkin' broadway - people are not very happy with Roller Derby and its abuse of NYMF rules - NYMF should remove the rules or call Roller Derby a special event, because they were NOT under the same constraints as all the other NYMF shows.

Tomorrow I'm expecting the new Platinum Editon of THE JUNGLE BOOK and Gus Van Sant's MALA NOCHE in a new Criterion edition.

So, with those discs, the new TV season, and the Mickey-Judy box arriving later in the week, I'm going to be one busy bee.

I'm up, I'm up.  I think it's swell that it was only in the 80s the other day when the sign in front of my eyes clearly said 90.  Clearly someone was trying to gaslight me.

BK - we have a thermometer hanging outside our kitchen window.  When it's in the direct sun, we estimate that it's reading about 10 o warmer than the actual air temp.

Actually the official temperatures are most likely from airport weather stations. In large urban land masses like Manhattan, you will regularly get hotter temps at ground level in the "urban canyons" - so your sign and the "official" temperatures could be quite different. I suspect the gas station sign more accurately reflects the comfort index than does the Weather bureau's official figures.

COLD CASE does have its season premiere tonight, so I'll likely pause the BRIAN episodes for at least an hour to watch it.

Tomorrow, season premieres begin for real for many shows.

We also have Ken Burn's new documentary series on The War (II) on PBS (in HD no less).

No.  DISBELIEF!

MMM has resurrected the "Robinson Crusoe on Mars" debate at FSM Message Board.

I don't see why he shouldn't have started a thread for Robinson Crusoe on Mars, as we were left in limbo about what John Morgan was going to report from Fred Steiner.

But when I read one of his subsequent posts - contradicting John Morgan whom he himself asked to look into the matter - about not believing what Steiner would say if it didn't corraborate what MMM thought... I admit I had to shake my head.

There's also someone named Glen Holland who brought up the Steiner/Van Cleave connection on the Non-Film Discussion Board... who interviewed Steiner aobut Van Cleave... but didn't answer my question about Steiner's involvement. Perhaps he'll see the new thread and give his opinion there.

IOWA to get a Christmas caucus?

ASSOCIATED PRESS (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,297727,00.html)

Quote
Florida Democrats Sticking to Early Presidential Primary

The Florida Democratic Party will stick with a Jan. 29 presidential primary even if it means losing all its nominating convention delegates, a party source said Saturday.

The Democratic National Committee gave the state party until Sept. 29 to come up with an alternative delegate selection plan to stay within party rules, such as caucuses or a vote-by-mail primary, but party leadership has rejected that idea.

...

Michigan has scheduled a Jan. 15 primary.

So, as it now stands. two major states will lose all of their Democrat delegates (and half their Republican delegates) and IOWA will be ringing in sometime in December.

Why do I think we're going to have some legal challenges?

Last night I attended a delightful performance of our very own PennyO's show "Jewish Thighs on Broadway"...in North Bend, WA!  A couple of weeks ago, she PM'd me and said this:  "I'm doing the "family version" which means most of the really dark stuff - and the 'brief partial nudity' are OUT - replaced by a couple of extra songs."  No partial nudity?  Well, let me tell you that it wasn't needed!  She was wonderful!  And her accompanist was her very first accompanist when she did the show for the very first time seven years ago.  He was very good, as well.

HOME, SMART HOME: HOW TO TALK TO YOUR HOUSE (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,224060,00.html)

Quote
What do Heidi Klum, Matt Damon and Bill Gates have in common? They talk to their houses ... and receive pretty efficient replies.

Imagine leaving work and instructing your cell phone to turn up the heat so your home is warm for your arrival. Imagine sitting in a business meeting and using your phone to doublecheck that you turned off the iron. You can even speak to your refrigerator and request a glass of bubbly.
This is no longer a dream for futurists. This is the latest in smart homes.

Another bonus is that the smart house can even send messages, warning homeowners that a light bulb is about to blow or that the refrigerator is almost out of milk.

Back in the 1980's my project had just packaged a PC on-a-board (a single board PC-AT!); a sister division also had in development a GPS sytem on a board (we already had data link stuff)

Great says I - Lets package them together! We'll put a box in a car trunk and a screen on the dash that will provide real-time navigation data to a driver. And for trucks, we'll add a barcode scanner so merchandise can be scanned in and out and dispatchers at a central location will be able to track individual packages. I even put together a neat Power Point presentation to give to our VP.

I really liked it.

It's sort of THE OC meets ONE TREE HILL. But it shows every teen with their blackberries and cell phones. aNd it's quite cute.

I was going to spend today at the office and even went there for a short time, but there are so many things I need to do at the house, and I want to spend time with the girls before I leave, so I'm home.  I wanted to "catch-up" on the time I lost with everything this month, but I've changed my mind. I'm writing this off as a down month, taking care of things at the house today, working until Thursday noon and then heading to Omaha and off to NYC. I can't wait

I'm back from the Flea Market. It was much the same. Lots of people and hard to move around but it was fun. I saw some friends, including the lovely Mr. Bruce Kimmel. I finally met the even lovlier Miss Adriana Patti who was carousing with Mr. Kimmel. We chatted for a few and then I was off and Bruce was off and now I'm home.

It's a beautful first day of fall in New York and it's supposed to stay like this for the rest of the week. Now I need a short nap before I begin to make a meat loaf for dinner.

Later, gaters.

Y'all may remember that back on August 15 I won my first eBay auction item.  It finally arrived yesterday, more than a month later.  I've been emailing the seller and checking at the PO.  Apparently, she shipped it promptly and it got lost and was finally returned to her.  Anyway, it arrived safely and I'm pleased.

I won an eBay auction more than a month ago.  The item was an $11 cell phone charger (with shipping).  I received an e-mail saying that it was shipped, but I never got it.  I sent the seller THREE e-mails but I didn't get any response.  I opened a dispute through Paypal, but I STILL haven't had any other response from the seller.  How rude! >:(

YES DR MattH, it was me who was a fan of WHAT ABOUT BRIAN.

But i must say the show changed a lot from the first episode till the end.
It was like a totally different show.

I can't remember how many different hiatus/breaks they had. But by the end the show was a lot better.

Btw tonight apparently they are showing recap episodes of both DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and BRTOTHERS & SISTERS. I think i will record them both to see if they show anything interesting.

I hope it gets better. I'm up to episode 9, and I find the show irritating and not very likable. And it looks like they're kiling off the most inoffensive and endearing character, Rosanna Arquette's actor husband. (I think that happens in episode #9 which I'll start later.)

It is very hot and humid today, beautiful if one is into outdoor activities, but it's SO dry here. We've had just a sprinkling of rain in the past two months, and it's really dry and brown, and it seems to makeit seem hotter seeing how dry everything is.

As I was saying to DR Jennifer, I'm up to episode #9 now in WHAT ABOUT BRIAN. After the first season (5 episodes), it looks like the producers re-thought the show. The show titles are now al"What about . . . . " instead of the generic titles from the first season. Brian was made scruffier. There's a lot more angst and people breaking up and making up - even worse than on GREY'S ANATOMY.

I can see why the show never really caught on. The people just aren't likable enough and the characters aren't individualistic enough to make a real impression. I'm not invested in their stories. I also felt ZERO chemistry with either of actress Sarah Lancaster's two loves Brian or Adam.

But I will watch every episode. I noticed that there is one special feature about Season 3, what was planned for the next season had the show gotten a renewal. That should prove interesting once I finshed the episodes they did film.

The flea market - I don't know what I was expecting, but I didn't really see any really rare items other than thousands of playbills.  There were tables hawking the most current shows and their signed posters and playbills, and there were quite a few used CDs, although nothing that interesting.  I was hoping to see more things like show jackets and such, but they were few and far between or else they'd already sold.

The Entertainment Weekly table was, for me, the best, as it was just one box after another of new DVDs all cheaply priced.  I got the new Viva Las Vegas DVD, along with The Witchfinder General, the new Taxi Driver SE (as opposed to the old Taxi Driver SE - do they never stop?), and Jack Hill's Spider Baby.

The only people I ran into that I knew were Ben, Seth Rudetsky, and photographer Bruce Glickhaus, who was working the EW booth.  It was very crowded, although not as crowded as I thought it would be.  There were some interesting silent auction items, too.

I also listened to the audio commentary for the pilot by the show's creator Dana Stevens. They shot the pilot THREE times trying to get it right. Obviously, the show was on shaky ground from the get-go. I think when you haven't created characters that hook you quickly, it's a lost cause.

I have been doing absolutely nothing - and I love it.  Today, I woke up, had a pancake, showered, got back in my pajamas and fell asleep reading until my mom got in here.

I am still shaking off the last remnants of a cold I had caught last week that had been circulating through our cast for a while, so these days off have been particularly nice for dealing with that.

So when I went to print them again.. it says I have 2 tickets for Starfighter and that looks fine, and two tickets for Brain....but the etickets say "deleted" on them. What???   So I called and was told that it says "deleted" but the computer says I still have the reservation so I should just ignore that.   I am a bit concerned, but don't really know what else I can do about it.

I'm afraid not, although it's very different.  It does have one great bit where Bert taps up the side of the proscenium all the way to the top, and then all the way across and down the other side of the proscenium.

Matthew Bourne's numbers are sometimes strange.   Again, it's all very enjoyable, though.

The session on the Plaza Hotel arrangement went very well, but it wasn't long enough so I will be adding a number to it tonight.  The event is on Monday, Oct 1; the rehearsal is next sunday, 12:30-2:30. I believe.

After that, I rushed down to West 46th Street to meet Donna Lynne Champlin for the 4:30 performance of THE PIPER, which has a glorious Irish score played by a band of five (piano, cello, guitar, percussion, pipe and violin double) and an onstage violin played by the multitalented Nancy Anderson.  There's too much music and too little plot, which cannot make up its mind if it's a variation on the Pied Piper, Jack the Ripper, Irish politics in Boston around 1892, or the perils of being an ex-whore and dealing with a mysterious crippled bastard daughter.  The music won me over but the book, with an especially ridiculous conclusion, bothered me.  It was a mostly excellent cast featuring my friends Christiane Noll and Catherine LaValle, and the musical staging was by Janet Watson, wife of FANTASTICKS author Tom Jones and sister of the glorious 1960s ingenue Susan Watson.

Hello from E & T Edisaurus! I still don't have internet service at home and may not before heading to NY next week. But in one corner of our new house, we can mooch off the one neighbor who doesn't require a pasword, when they're in town and when they're home but not sleeping.

Consequently, I only get to read about 4 pages or so before the service disappears. This is beyond frustrating.

To compound things, my work has virtually disappeared after THE CLOSER. I had one day of work after the move (I cut a "Thank You" Emmy spot which never aired since Sally Field won!) and although I had a large project editing for the SAG awards, it's the time of year when Turner panics about money (actually it's about a month early this year) and pulled the job in-house with their editors.

I can't say I'm too unhappy about this development. I love the producer and we were looking forward to working together again, but this it didn't really give me any time to line up any other work to take its place. And now I can't surf the internet and read the posts at work, while loaading or waiting for approvals, and I can't read at home, and I feel quilty about going somewhere to read when my DH and I are trying to get the house more liveable.

I wanted to read all the posts before writing in but I'm not quite finished yet. Still, some of the tragedies and victories and things to celebrate have manifested and resolved themselves, so I'm going to chime in now, after reading of the triumphant premiere night of THE BRAIN.

Tonight at 8PM, est, for those of you who are at home and not at the NYMF, tune in PBS for Ken Burn's THE WAR, produced by my partner Peter Miller.

I've only seen one episode, but it was phmnomenal and I think the best thing Ken has ever done.

I have to say that I haven't been a huge fan of his work for awhile, but I loved the episode I saw. There are no scholars or historians...it's the story of WWII told by the people who fought it and those around them, from 4 parts of the country.

I know this is late notice but pbs will usually run these several times and it's my first chance to mention it.

The achival footage Peter found was phenomenal, much of it never before seen here as it came from the Japanese and german government.

So, tune in!

DR Cillaliz has met Peter (I think bk and Adriana and the NY contingent may also have when we premiered SACCO AND VANZETTI) but those who haven't will be able to meet him at the Sept 30th showing of THE BRAIN. He's bringing his wife and two daughters. I described the questionable elements but he seems to think they can deal with muscular men in gold lame, etc.

He's looking forward to meeting all the HHWers, particularly FJL, who he is very grateful to, and thanking everyone who so generously supported our film but attending screenings or buying/renting the DVD. DR Laura, I've loved all the pictures and can't believe you take those with a pocket-sized camera. No matter how great the lens is, it's nothing without a great photographer!

I hope you've had a happy birthday; the photographic evidence appears that way!

BTW, I think you should make your photos into note cards as well as a book!

Woo and Hoo, DR Edi is back!  It's so nice to see you on line and I can hardly wait to meet you next weekend.  Thanks for your kind thoughts.

We now have everything out of Harriet's apartment, except for some things Rob will pick up tomorrow and the big things, which require a truck and some young backs.  Those will be moved tomorrow evening, including a couch that we're putting in our bedroom.  It will replace a smaller couch that has been in there that's now here in my study/dressing room.

My DH, his brothers, their wives, and a niece did a marvelous job yesterday and today.  Grandma would be proud.

Comcast---different story. We dinally got things working here today, after 6 visits and at least 20 phone calls. I think I mentioned before how much they suck, but little did I know the depths unto which they could suck!

3 vists were a bust because the tech didn't bring a ladder. Greg even went and bought a $200 ladder for one guy but then he ended up hooking things up wrong.

Today they replaced the whole cable and things are finally working but now they say they're going to come back and bury the cable in the yard. I hope I'm here and they don't destroy the yard or the garden wall. Oh, how I hate them!

AT&T & Earthlink were also frustrating.

AT&T wouldn't agree to give me a call forwarding message until I had disconnected my phone. Now thtey wat 40 bucks to reconnect it to give me this service and another 10 a month. So, fuggedaboutit. Most of the call on my home phone are telemarketers, or my mom. She knows where to find me.

I had this phone # for 25 years...you'd think they could cooperate a little. Oh well...

Earthlink said they would not hook up our internet until the address on our AT&T accound matched our new phone number. We couldn't get AT&T to update their info for a week. Yesterday it finally matched, so now Earthlink say it will take them another week! Argh!

How do people do it who move a lot?

I do have question for anyone:

I was listening to The Most Happy Fella (3CD JAY version) and was wondering why Marie (Tony's sister) doesn't speak in the same kind of dialect that he does.

Dick Rasmussen was a relative through marriage - my Aunt's brother-in-law. He was an artist and an art teacher at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington (I've always loved saying Walla Walla, Washington) anyway, he was fascinated with Marcel Marceau and went all over the country and to France drawing him.  Not sure if he ever did anything with his drawings and later paintings, but they were great.   Dick died a few years ago.

And as for the The Ritz... I liked it.  Rosie Perez's cabaret number/medley is one of the funniest things I've seen in a while - and since Seth Rudetskt put it together, there are some "hidden" jokes in there too.  I laughed at them while people were wondering why I was laughing.  ;)

Kevin Chamberlin is good, but I think the show belongs to Brooks Ashmanskas as Chris - with a great assist by Patrick Kerr as Claude.  And I loved the set too.

Oh, and the men in towels were nice to look at too.  :)

I went ahead and stopped by the Broadway Cares Flea Market after the show, and ended up picking up a few things.  By the time I got there, a lot of the table were holding "Clearance Sales" - 4 t-shirt for $10.00, 5 window cards for $5.00, etc.

I ended up with one of the BC/EFA snowglobes for $5.00, and a conductor's score of The Grass Harp also for $5.00.

Oh, and I did get my "George Bush Is Only For Now" t-shirt from the Avenue Q table - which, as it turns out, was designed by our very own DR Jason.  :)

Got a gut full of WHAT ABOUT BRIAN tonight. I did get a bit teary-eyed at the memorial service for Arquette's deceased husband, but I am amazed at how telegraphed all the romantic match-ups are. A new face walks into a scene, and the leading actor's face just ligths up and we know that's going to be a driving force for the next several episodes.

I will be starting episode #15 tomorrow. Don't know if I'll be able to finish the set tomorrow because I WILL not miss premiere week on NBC tomorrow night.

CHUCK comes on at 8 and the hunky and gorgeous Adam Baldwin is the co-star of the show.

HEROES, of course, not to be missed in its second season premiere.

And, as I've stated before, I'm going to sample JOURNEYMAN for a few weeks to see what I think.

So, BRIAN will take a back seat to those shows tomorrow night. But I'll have the rest of teh day to watch, and will possibly go a bit later into the evening tomorrow depending on how far I get during the morning, afternoon, and early evening.

I also managed to watch the last few minutes of BROTHERS & SISTERS, and saw the music video they fashioned for the season two premiere and also the previews for next week's episode. Looking forward to its return about as much as any show on TV.

Which of course made me wonder....why did the turkeys cross the road? So I asked them

they apparently didn't have an answer. As soon as they crossed.....they turned back and headed down the middle of the road

If it were up to Ben Franklin, the turkey would've been the national bird of America, not the eagle...according to the musical 1776.

Did anybody who watched DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES see a preview for this coming season? I thought that was one of the key points for this recap show. But I did not see any preview.

Unless it was during a commercial break (or not shown on the canadian channel - i watched it at 8pm).

Yes, the turkey is a noble bird.....

I met Paul for dinner and after ordering told him about seeing the wild turkeys....his response was "You admired the beautiful turkeys and then ordered one for dinner!!! That's just wrong."

Glad you liked them  ;D  There are lots of wild turkeys around here.  They didn't let me get really close, but I got a number of decent shots

I enjoyed the first episode of THE WAR (that doesn't sound right, but you know what I mean)  It's a lot different from the historian/still photo style of many Ken Burns films.  I thought this was perfect for the subject matter.   I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Edi's partner, Peter last fall. I'm looking forward to seeing him again.

I tried but couldn't get beyond "Won't you get me some...Monkeycake!"

Had a wonderful time this afternoon over at George's friend Jim's home. George and Jim had been friends since around 1980 and George's death has been especially difficult for him as they pretty much talked on the phone almost daily. I knew Jim lived near Salem (he moved down here from Portland about 2 years ago), and George had mentioned him many times, but I never met him until the funeral. We decided we should get together and today was the day.

Jim made a wonderful dinner and dessert and we played with Bosco and his dog June, and George's dog Scruffy who now is living with Jim.

Jim is a great guy and I am glad I finally got to meet him...incidently, he and my sister Sue used to work together at AT&T back in the 1980s and were good buddies but had lost track of each other over the years...I will have to rectify that.

Well, "Desperate Housewives" just ended and there was no specific preview during the show.  At the end, there was a general preview of the new season's shows starting next week, but that's it.
