Well, you've read the notes, the notes were nocturnal and even preternatural in their naturalness, and now it is time for you to post until the nocturnal cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: CLERISY!
-
And now - Dino at the piano.
-
We need to fill up our Wedneday and Friday late-afternoon shows. Alert the media!
-
I'll try to bring some folks with me on Friday...
-
cool, i'm the first after BK
-
ok second...
-
I guess I'll be there Wednesday and Friday...if I have to.
-
BK, I have the Z doc---I bought it at Amoeba when I was in LA but haven't watched it yet. If you hadn't seen it I was going to pass it on to you.
-
Yes, you have to, Cason. I've been waiting for a long time to meet you and Miss K!
Why doesn't my mother ever clean my house when she visits ME?
-
Yes, you have to, Cason. I've been waiting for a long time to meet you and Miss K!
Why doesn't my mother ever clean my house when she visits ME?
Yeah, you HHW'ers are definitely worth showing up for!
By the way, I'll hire mine out if you need some cleaning...
-
Here's the 4th cat, the aloof one, settling in nicely. She is getting along with everyone much better and even sleeps with us sometimes now, which she has NEVER done.
-
Yeah, you HHW'ers are definitely worth showing up for!

Great. If she come here and clean, we love her long time!
-
Cason, I think I recognize the under the bridge location---wasn't that used in the movie HAIR?
-
I shall shortly be on my way to the bed for my nocturnal wanderings.
-
Glad to see the kitties settling in nicely Edi...
-
Cason, I think I recognize the under the bridge location---wasn't that used in the movie HAIR?
That was the newly refurbished Bethesda Terrace - which is the entrance to the Bethesda Fountain (the Angel Fountain).
-
I believe DR Jose took me to each of the places in DR Cason's photos...it is like dejavu! A really good dejavu!!
-
DR Edisaurus, it is so nice to see some shots of the new home environment...and the feline inhabitants!
And I am so intriuged by the lamp on your desk...any chance of a close-up?
-
Some DRs may like to check out the WEB links to Melbourne's Regent Theatre. DR MusicGuy may have played there.
The Story of the restoration of the theatre and its protection by the Union movement here is an interesting story. It was my favourite cinema as a child. One of the movies shown there was "The King & I" - the venue was perfect! The theatre is now used as "theatre" rather than cinema but has had some special screenings. It will house "Wicked" in 2008.
The stage version of "Priscilla" opens in a few weeks time.
-
Tomovoz, I just want to give that big fluffy dog a hug!
-
Here's the 4th cat, the aloof one, settling in nicely. She is getting along with everyone much better and even sleeps with us sometimes now, which she has NEVER done.
I mean...that's a gorgeous kitty. I want one!
-
Which one!
They are brother and sister. (Same Father)
-
Great pic of the loof DR Edi.
I love to see a loof resting.
-
Well...
Goodnight.

Goodnight Mr Piano

Be a loof. This country needs more loofs.

The pictures are coming!! The pictures are coming!!!
I am safely home from opening weekend in NY and have pictures for all to revel in!
Here is a picture of the Kimmel hands! - These were taken during tech, and so the lighting and spacing are a bit off, but you gotta love the Kimmel hands.

Our cast :)

Bruce takes a moment to appreciate the hard work of his stunning assistant before he moves on to chat with other party guests.
-
Co-writers and best friends Bruce Kimmel and David Wechter already silently plotting their next project, and just plain having fun.
-
I suppose I should post the picture
-
Sorry about my horrible red eye correction, it was the best I could do.
There are more coming in a moment.
-
That's it! we're working some beefcake into our show, too! (at least in a PG-13 sort of way)
-
Cason, Elmore, and Larry Goldberg.
-
From left to right - Erin Webley, Paul Downs Colaizzo, Assistant Choreographer Cassie Abate, Chad Harlow, Steve Wenslawski, and Benjamin Clark
-
I miss the group already. I can't wait to see them all tomorrow. This is the longest we've gone since we started rehearsals that we've all been apart.

Alet Taylor and Rob Evan

Whew! Such a lot going on here at HHW - and that's a good thing! :D
A big THANK YOU to DRs Tomovoz, DearReaderLaura, Cason, Edisaurus, JoseSPiano, Jason, and Adriana for all the wonderful photos! Fun, fun, fun. DR Tomovoz, the dogs are adorable. Your spring garden is magnificent. It must take a great deal of time to maintain! Loved your photo tour, DR Laura. DR Cason, enjoyed experiencing your Enabler Tour 2007 vicariously. DR Jason, your "creations" are always a joy. DR Edisaurus, love the shots of the new house and the adorable kitties. May your connections return, soon and trouble-free! And best of all, the shots of The Brain and cast from DR Adriana Patti. Thank you one and all.
-
Swell photos!!!!!!
-
DR Edisaurus - When DH Greg will be in White Plains, he'll be just minutes from where I live. Except that on Sunday morning I'll be in Connecticut.
-
DR td: I heard that!

CONGRATULATIONS

Thanks, DR George, for sharing the air date on Mahagonny! :)
-
DR Edisaurus - since your inbox is full...
THANK YOU for your lovely card! It made me laugh ;D and was very thoughtful!
I committed to do something on Saturday the 29th, long before I realized that it would become the main H/K NYC weekend. And I can't really change it. So, with extreme regret :'( I will be unable to accompany you and DH Greg to Coney Island. Darn it!
-
Thanks for all the photos!! Especially...

Thank you. ;)

Love the tour photos, the flower photos and the kitty photos! ;D
-
Well, last night we had our first read-through of Night of the Living Dead! The Musical! The script is a bit long. ::) Being a world premiere and all, I think that they knew that it would need some work after we started rehearsals.
-
I'm playing three characters: Dr. Flurm, the sheriff's deputy and the executive's assistant, and we'll all be singing off-stage during various moments.
-
Overall, I think it'll be a lot of fun. Hopefully the audiences will think so, as well. ;)
-
And...

Hey, did anyone notice on the "HHW COMMUNITY FORUM" Home Page that due to space limitations, today's topic title is shortened to:
MY NOCTURNAL WAND?
;D
-
DR Edisaurus, it is so nice to see some shots of the new home environment...and the feline inhabitants!
And I am so intriuged by the lamp on your desk...any chance of a close-up?
Yes, I'll take one after the sun comes up and we can have some natural light. It's a very beautiful antique Lightolier lamp. I bought it years ago waiting to put it in our dream house that we never got to live in. (The one they built the 5 story loft behind.)
The ceiling lamp is also a beautiful antique, Doré bronze with custard glass globes. I'll post a picture of that, too. It's really too low for my office, but again, I've had it 10 years and life is to short to keep the things you like in storage. I said to hell with it---people over 6 feet will just have to look out!
After my DH saw the fabric I picked out for my shades, he thought that my office was starting to look like the Fox Theatre (our local movie palace)! But it's tiny, so that makes it funnier. It looks kind of...Turkish.

Only you, singdaw, only you!

Great pic of the loof DR Edi.
I love to see a loof resting.
You mean a loof loafing?
-
DR Adriana, those are terrific photos! Thanks so much for posting them!
-
BTW, which one of the bathuit suit boys is Joe Jackson? (He's from Atlanta, you know....) It's hard to tell, since they're both, uh, shoeless.
-
Sorry you can't make it to Coney with us, sisngdaw, but we'll take an extra spin on the rollercoaster just for you!
There's also a film festival going on that weekend, but who wants to sit in a dark theatre when you're in NY, NY?
Wait a minute---that's the reason I'm GOING to NY!
-
Hi, Ben! I hope you are vigorously washing the bowl to continue to improve your cholesterol!
-
DR Elmore, will you be at the Friday afternoon BRAIN?
-
Actually, since I'm having a physical with blood work taken I have not yet eaten breakfast. I have not eaten anything since about 6pm last night. I will wait until after my doctor appointment, which is not until 10am. I'm hungry but I must wait.
-
I misunderstood Anthony yesterday. He has the music for the song from It's A Wonderful Life, he just wanted a recording to refresh the song for him.
-
We had no movie palaces in Minneapolis (or Coon Rapids).
-
I'm seeing The Ritz tonight.
-
And now the Otto Bremer Foundation needs work so I will leave you kind and gentle folk.
-
Good morning, all! DR edisaurus, Joe is the young man Cason is facing on the right.
DR Adriana, great photos! I'm sorry we didn't get to spend more time together this visit. Are you returning again this weekend for the close?
I'm off to Toyland, then the matinee of "The Brain." My friends Cathie and Alice are coming today. As soon as the matinee is over, I'm dashing back here to see how far I can get on the Plaza music by tomorrow morning.
Back later!
-
DR Ben, will look forward to your musings on The Ritz tomorrow morning.
***LOW CHOLESTROL VIBES*** to you today!!!

If you have 5 to 10 minutes to spare, and want a pick-me-up, this story on YAWNS (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=14654608) yesterday on National Public Radio was pretty amusing. Especially the bit toward the end about whether they're contagious between humans and their pets.

Tuesday morning greetings! We had a late evening yesterday, finishing up the clearing of Harriet's apartment. Various pieces of furniture were dispursed with muscle power provided by our nephew-in-law Scott and our DS Rob. All that's left is for Richard to turn in the keys, which has to be done during daytime business hours.
Hope I can stay awake at my desk until 5:30.
-
Awake vibes for DR GINNY.
-
Wow! All the great things to see, and we never had to leave our computer screens.
LA - San Fernando Valley - Atlanta - NYC - Australia....whew!
Didn't have to pack a bag either.
-
Or stand in line to be searched at the airport!
-
Attended a lot of drive in theatres when I was small.
We had The Ritz in my hometown, and another theatre in Plainfield about 10 miles away that we went to sometimes....hmmm....
-
I've been here a couple of times, but I forgot to post, so caught up was I in reading.
-
Thanks for the faux-plateau congrats.
-
Congrats to Edi on her true plateau/milestone

And one for Milestones

Kitty Condo!
-
For both theatres, the ticket booth was outside. You paid your money and the girl would tear off your ticket. There were double padded doors on either side.
Usually they were closed and an usher would take your ticket when you passed by him.
Big glass counters with lots of candy. The popcorn machine was a stand alone at the Mooresville Ritz, so you could get popcorn without standing in line at the candy counter.
Neither theatre had a balcony. Plainfield theatre had international seating with a large center section and two smaller sections on either side. The Ritz had a center aisle with seating on either side.
Ritz was mostly red....the Plainfield theatre in yellow. Fabric on the walls, and wonderful posters and pictures that made all of the movies seem a lot more exciting than they turned out to be.
-
Good morning, good day, how are you this beautiful day? I'm up, that's how I am. And shaved. And soon will be showered.

Good morning!
I slept deeply and well but not nearly long enough. Looks like today wil be the same as the last week - fairly cool morning but a hot afternoon. Doesn't look like any relief until Saturday.
Bah!

TOD
My favorite movie palaces in Montreal were, as they no longer exist, The Loewes and The Palace. Both were 1,000 plus seat theaters. The former was converted into a 5 plex using and retaining much of the original decor. It has since closed, been gutted and now are stores I think.
The Palace was gutted and made into a 6 plex (if memory serves). It is too closed and when I went online last week looking for the name of the theater that had the fire where many children died, the website dedicated to all the movie theaters that were and are said the Palace was being turned into a multilevel parking lot!
I went to the very last movie to play the Palace before it was converted into a multiplex to remember what it looked liked. The last film to play there was a sad end to a beautiful theater. It was called Greta The Mad Butcher.
-
Enjoyed the cat picture and the BRAIN cast pictures. Just love this kind of behind-the-scene views of the company. Brings back memories of many cast parties I've attended.
-
The only true movie palace I ever went to regularly was Radio City Music Hall which was a must on every trip to New York through the mid-70s. After they stopped showing movies with a stage show, I lost interest in going there and haven't been there in years, aactually decades.
-
The closest thing we had to a movie palace in Charlotte was the Carolina Theater which was the Cinerama theater here. I've written about it often. I saw many, many roadshow classics in that theater growing up in addition to the Cinerama offerings.
The shell of the theater is still downtown and has been the subject of endless debate for years about what's to be done with it.
-
I had some time left over this morning after cleaning the living room so I sat down and watched last night;s HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER. Not as funny as the show has been in previous episodes, but I did find Marshall's man-crush on Enrique Iglacius sweet and funny. And Barney had some good back-and-forth insults with a rocker chick covered in tattoos.
-
TOD Part 2
The only movie palace left I think is called The Imperial. (It's been a long time since I been to it) It is used for special events and the Montreal Film Festival. It was originally a vaudeville house, houses the Cinerama movie system, converted into a two plex, restored and went back to single theater although the balcony was made smaller. A beautiful theater and I hope they keep it around.
Other favorites were smaller and more "atmosphere" interiors. The Seville and The Monkland were favortes. The latter was a double bill for many years. After a film ended its first run it would go to Monkland with another film.
The Seville was the "roadshow" palace. The Sound of Music played there for over four years and then other roadshows played there. It was also chosen to be the "Surroundsound" theater.
-
When I return from lunch, I'll watch last night's CSI: MIAMI. If new new edition of THE JUNGLE BOOK arrives today, I'll start plowing through it (a 2 disc set). Otherwise, MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS this afternoon.
-
Tonight I'll have the season premieres of several shows to either watch or record: BONES, HOUSE, SVU, BOSTON LEGAL, and DAMAGES.
Note to fans of BOSTON LEGAL. It begins thirty minutes earlier tonight: 9:30 p.m. EDT.
None of the new series premiering tonight have really captured my interest from reading about them though REAPER (in the old VERONICA MARS slot) may get my attention later in the season if it lasts at all.
-
TOD Part 4
The only grindhouse in Montreal that I knew of was on St. Lawrence Blvd at St. Catherine Street. St. Lawrence divided Montreal into east/west. I no longer remember the name of the theater.
But I saw many triple bills.
Usually a recent film. a film that was a couple of years old, and depending on the year I went they should Kung Fu, Italian Comedy Action and T & A very soft core films. They had the coming attractions, the adverts for the snack bar, others bumpers that I also no longer remember what they were and a man going up and down selling drinks and hot dogs.
They were bargins. Went I first went the coast of admission was $1.25 and when I stopped going it was $2.25.
Some many great films and many not so great films. Some I had fond memories of, but when I saw some of them again recently I couldn't believe I had fond memories of them.
-
I shall shortly be on my way to the theater. Send excellent vibes and xylophones.
-

When I was a kid there were really only two theaters in Medford, The Craterian and The Holly. As the Craterian showed most of the kiddie and family movies that is where I usually went. I can only recall going to the Holly Theatre a couple of times. I think my brother Allen and his girlfriend took me and my little brother Dan there to see FEAR IS THE KEY...a movie that I dislike to this very day due to the opening scene of a couple who are set on fire. Rather disturbing for a young kid (what was my brother thinking taking us to that movie?).
Anyhow...here is a slight glimpse of The Craterian, and downtown Medford, back when I was a tiny tot....

I've read a lot about GRINDHOUSE and the decision to release its two films as separate, expanded DVD releases minus the accompanying faux trailers and other inserts to give it its uniqueness.
I'm sure Tarantino fans will raise enough stink to force the releasing company to eventually release the theatrical cut. For now, they should be happy they have the film in a long form which they didn't get to experience in the theater. These companies are NOTORIOUS for double-dipping on releases of cult films. Look at how many releases HALLOWEEN and NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD have had.
If I'm not mistaken, the Weinstein Company released the two films separately in Europe to more success than the one film received here.
-
And I meant to add that I have no interest in watching either section of GRINDHOUSE. Just not my cup of tea at all.

Every single post must be celebrated as though it may be the last.

The closest thing we had to a movie palace in Charlotte was the Carolina Theater which was the Cinerama theater here. I've written about it often. I saw many, many roadshow classics in that theater growing up in addition to the Cinerama offerings.
They have a small movie palace in Durham, also called The Carolina. I have a fondness for it because of all the great films I've seen there at the Full Frame festival. It's where all the big films (and ours) show.
The city approved a huge convention center and hotel built next to it. It looks like they chose to protect it and incorporate it into the complex, and did a very nice job of it. Good for them, and too bad more towns aren't as forward thinking.
-
Here is a veiw of the theater from the other direction (and from 1925).

The only true movie palace I ever went to regularly was Radio City Music Hall which was a must on every trip to New York through the mid-70s. After they stopped showing movies with a stage show, I lost interest in going there and haven't been there in years, aactually decades.
I was there for The Sword in the Stone (I think that was the movie) back in 1977 followed by the Easter Rockettes show

I don't remember the names of the SLC theaters I went to as a child, but I still remember the John Danz in lovely Bellevue, Washington, which was my regular weekend hangout in my youth. We also saw several movies at the Paramount in Seattle.
-
But to know him is to love him. I need to find a I *Heart* Jose t-shirt!
-
DR Kerry will have to tell ya'll about the Cine Capri, which was probably our movie palace. That and the Orpheum (which I never went to as a movie place.)
The Cine Capri was torn down to make room for another strip mall or another tall building; the Orpheum was saved and restored, and I've been there several times. I saw MusicGuy perform there once.

The "Mickey and Judy" box is supposed to be available as of TODAY!
I had an Amazon pre-order going back to July...the first time I saw they had it listed.
Last night, I visited the site, checked my account and was expecting to see that my copy was being prepared for shipping.
Instead, I was still able to cancel the order.
Been there before, I have. And I feared that this ONE BOX I've wanted FOR YEARS wouldn't be shipped today or tomorrow...nay, might not BE shipped until, as I've done on a few selected (i.e., MUCH-WANTED) pre-orders, I screamed bloody murder when I discover they're offering it for delivery "tomorrow" if someone orders it in the next 5 hours under "one-day service."
So, I cancelled the order. That's right. CANCELLED IT.
For my reason, I selected "Did not ship fast enough."
Under comments, I wrote "This is a pre-selected item from last July and it should NOT have been possible to cancel as it should have SHIPPED YESTERDAY. I choose to cancel and then reorder. MAYBE I'll get it this week."
I then reordered it for one-day delivery. It still hasn't shipped to my knowledge, but they need to get on the stick. I want it NOW!
-
We only had The Grand in Estherville, Iowa. It wasn't really a palace, however back when it was built it was a theater for touring vaudville type shows, so it had a real stage. We used to love to go into the balcony, it was the best when we snuck up there and it was closed. By the time I went there, it was a little run down. People talked about trying to save it, but alas it was demolished a number of years ago.
-
DR Ben, I seem to remember hearing a feature on NPR about movie palaces and they discussed one in Minneapolis.
-
DR Laura ~ That one photo of the ceiling of that tunnel that Cason posted yesterday was for you -- we thought you'd appreciate the tile work -- there was no carpet under that bridge/tunnel so hence no photo of the flooring ....

DR Jose is the DEVIL! I mean, Cookie Monster! I mean, Enabler! I mean, Temptress!

Looking forward to hearing your reaction to some of the things he plied you with!

This link goes to NPR's story on The Angel of Ahlem, they are broadcasting the interview in connection with THE WAR being on PBS. Vernon Tott was from Sioux City, he was among the liberators of the Ahlem concentration camp and took photos that sat in a box in his basement for 50 years until he was contacted via an army newsletter. He had the only photos that exist of Ahlem.
He then made it his mission to locate as many of the individuals from the photos as possible. He did this with a couple of the survivors. They made a doc of it called The Angel of Ahlem that premiered here last Spring. Several of the survivors were here and it was fascinating. Vernon died in 2005

The movie palace I have the happiest memories of is The Paramount in Charlottesvile, VA.
I've gone to C'Ville several times over the past decade and was always saddened to see how hard the locals were struggling to raise the money and preserve it. I corresponded with the group that was working on it, sent them some cash, but I really felt like it was a goner.
So the TOD caused me to check up on it again, and lo and behold it's up and running! I am thrilled and will probably look for an excuse to go there soon.
This is where I saw many films that are discussed on this board, when I was in junior high school. And in the summers, we had "Milady's Movie Matinee" for the non-working wives and mothers. They showed films like SWEET NOVEMBER, PENELOPE, INSIDE DAISY CLOVER and other 60's era chick flicks and gave away prizes by local merchants.
I also didn't realize how beautiful it was inside. But I did notice that they had "love seats" in the back row so people who wanted to cuddle wouldn't block the view of the person behind them. As teenager, I was intrigued by that idea and hoped to have that experience myself, but we moved when I was in 9th grade.
Another reason to go back...and now I have someone to cuddle with!
-
I then reordered it for one-day delivery. It still hasn't shipped to my knowledge, but they need to get on the stick. I want it NOW!
DR Ron Pulliam, you have my condolences. I pre-ordered from Amazon just several weeks ago. Mine is scheduled for delivery Thursday, but I have Amazon Prime.
It is frustrating, their inconsistency. You may not feel it's worth it, cost-wise, to upgrade to Prime, but I have found it much more consistent and very satisfactory.
-
Good Morning, all! Break a leg today, Bruce. All of you.
My three favorite theatres as a kid were the Fox, the Paramount and the Palms. The Fox was very plain on the outside but an art deco wonder inside. It had a rather faded glory to it by then, but while the other kids were watching the 3 Stooges during Saturday matinees, I was wandering around the theatre looking at all the gazelles and frozen fountains sunrays and lightning bolts. It had a wonderful floating staircase in the lobby that made anyone feel regal to descend it. It looked as if Fred and Ginger should be dancing on it. The Fox is alas, now gone.
The Paramount has been restored and is typical Spanish/Moorish design. Not spectacular like the Fox. BUT it did have moving clouds on the ceiling and lush red velvet drapes. It was originally called the Orpheum, and the name has been restored to it as well. It was the Orpheum, then the Paramount, then Nederlander bought it and brought in some big name tours in the 60's and 70's. It then went dark, then showed Mexican movies and then closed. I'm glad it was saved (Musicguy oversaw the reinstallation of the pipe organ), but they should have saved the Fox instead.
The Palms was more mid-town and was built in the late 40's or early 50's. Very moderne and minimalist, but I liked it. I saw so many great movies there (which is probably why I have such fondness for it). It managed to get most of the A list movies, and I was in heaven.
We also ended up at the Kachina which was a Cinerama theatre (How the West Was Won, etc.) It may have just been an extended screen rather than true Cinerama, but it was good enough for me. It was a three fold screen (like those backing boards for science fair projects) rather than curved, so it was always fun to watch the distortion.
There was another wide screen theatre, the Bethany West. But that was mainly good for rolling down the ailses as a little kid. It had no personality or particular design (even the Kachina had its ugly southwest motifs), but I saw some great movies there too.
-
DR Kerry will have to tell ya'll about the Cine Capri
What kind of shoes do you wear there?
-
There were two large movie theatres in Minneapolis but I never considered them "palaces" the way Radio City Music Hall is a "palace" and some of the other grand sites like the Roxy and The Fox. When I saw movies in the State and the Orpheum they were rather ordinary. I know now that since I've left Mpls both theatres have been renovated and returned (somewhat) to their former glory. Both theatres were stops in the 40s, 50s and early 60s for Broadway road shows. By the time I began seeing theatre Minneapolis had fallen off the road tour circuit but then in the mid-70s it seems, things began to change and shows began to filter back to the city. I don't remember seeing great movies in great movies palaces. I saw them in ordinary or nice places but no palaces for this poor, deprived child :'(

And the word of the day is: CLERISY!
Shannon discovered that hanging out with the high school CLERISY made her appear smarter than she really was, but did nothing to clear up her acne the way she had hoped.
-
A bigger photo of The Paramount. I remember seeing SHENDANDOAH there and crying my eyes out, especially sisnce we were living where it all took place.
I also remember seeing Lawrence of Arabia with my girlfriend, and during intermission, I had the bright idea of putting sand from the cigarette containers in the restroom into our shoes and then sitting down in the lobby and dumping sand out of our shoes at intermission.
Now I'm appalled at this mild act of vandalism. I'm really not that sort of person!

THAT starts us on page six? I ain't dancin'! :P

Gee Ben, as a kid from a little town near the Iowa/Minnesota border, just getting to GO to Minneapolis was like going to the Emerald City, and we usually only went to the Southdale Mall, lol.

As Kander and Ebb (or somebody) said
The grass is always greener :D
That's how I looked on New York, as the Emerald City, and now I'm here and where is the Wizard???

The Carolina Theater in Greenville SC was "magic central" for me during my teen years. It's where I saw most of the films I still love today.
It was built in 1925 and had a seating capacity of 1,400. Many vaudeville acts played there until vaudeville died (hush, Rose!) and it converted to movie palace. It was closed/demolished in the early 1970s. It had the widest CinemaScope screen I ever saw and was the largest theater in town.
Here is a photo of it in the 1940s:

DR Ron Pulliam, you have my condolences. I pre-ordered from Amazon just several weeks ago. Mine is scheduled for delivery Thursday, but I have Amazon Prime.
It is frustrating, their inconsistency. You may not feel it's worth it, cost-wise, to upgrade to Prime, but I have found it much more consistent and very satisfactory.
I've had Amazon Prime for three years. That's the whole crux of my turmoil.
I believe the trouble is that I ordered something else at the same time....something I got within days. But the Mickey-Judy box remains attached to that completed order.
Amazon has difficulty, apparently, maintaining tracking on pre-orders attached to allready-filled orders.
I live, I experience, and I learn.
Sigh.

Wow! All the great things to see, and we never had to leave our computer screens.
LA - San Fernando Valley - Atlanta - NYC - Australia....whew!
Didn't have to pack a bag either.
or get a passport... fight the crowds at the airport and bad cofffee

No palaces where I grew up either. The closest theatre of any sort was 10 miles awa

Vibes to the cast of THE BRAIN!
-
I didn't go to no stinkin' movie palaces while I was growin' up. ;)
Instead, I have the Byrd Theare in Richmond, VA. A beautiful theatre with some "traditionally" uncomfortable seats. It always seems to be on the verge of being bought by Someone, and then torn down, but, thankfully, there's enough local interest and support to keep The Byrd, The Byrd. -And they still have an organ player on the weekends too before the feature film. It's a second run house, so the top ticket price is $1.99.
-
Well good. That means the alarms haven't been activated by prowlers or other trouble.

I did not get a chance to watch HEROES yet. I am looking forward to it though.
I did watch DWTS though. Interesting women. Not sure i really liked anyone. Did not know a couple of them (sabrina the cheetah girl and the model). There are others i don't really think have the potential to win (marie osmond, jennie garth). I liked jane seymour and although i don't think she will win, i think she has potential.
It should be interesting to see the men.
-
The Empire in Grand Forks and the Fargo Theatre in Fargo have been restored but they are quite small theatres and they were built in the 20s and early 30s.
They have been restored.
I would not call it a palace but I do like the State Theatre in downtown Mpls that has been restored.
-
Thanks for that NPR link, DR Cillaliz. Very interesting & moving story!

Hmm... Currently, no Amtrak service along the Northeast Corridor due to a traffic accident in Philadelphia. I hope it's cleared up in time for DR Jeanne's journey tomorrow.

***SAFE & EASY TRAVEL VIBES***
for DR MusicGuy!

Tonight i will record BOSTON LEGAL and DANCING WITH THE STARS (though i'll probably start watching at around 8:30pm). I will also record GOSSIP GIRL and i think i will try REAPER.
I did record last night's JOURNEYMAN but not CHUCK. IF they repeat the first show i may try it. But I have DANCING WITH THE STARS on already at that time.

Btw for any BIG BROTHER fans the last 2 housecalls are quite interesting. The 2nd to last show (the wed) has dani/dick. And the last show has zach/eric.
You can go to www.cbs.com/innertube and click on big brother (housecalls is one of the choices).

Tomovoz your gardens are beautiful.
DR Jason….CONGRATULATIONS!!! You look good with long hair, have you thought about letting yours grow out a little bit longer?
Thanks for the wonderful walking tour photos.
Edi, I like your office, especially the lamp sitting on the desk. The kitties are all beautiful & look very content.
More photos from Adriana… :D

Good vibes for the BRAIN today. ~~~~~~~~~~~

Thanks for that NPR link, DR Cillaliz. Very interesting & moving story!
You're welcome, DR Singdaw. I was one of the 1000+ people at the world premiere of the doc and exhibit of the photos etc. The doc was moving but actually quite funny at times. It's really the story of the men finding each other 50 years later and the friendships that formed with Vernon and the survivor's families as a result of the photos.
There is one scene were a photo is passed around and everyone is absolutely sure they can identify someone in a photo, of course they all disagree on who it is, but they are all sure, that sort of thing.

Well, I shall be spending this afternoon not in The Acorn Theatre, but here taking care of some cleaning and some practicing. I'm playing a brief No, No Nannette audition for Encores! at 5:00, and I have a few songs to prepare.
-
All the talk about Minneapolis this morning is interesting, because a coworker and I have been cooking up a trip there March 24-29, 2008, for the Public Library Association 12th National Conference.

In the case of the Fargo Theatre, its marquee is more widely known.

I'm trying something new this afternoon. It's a Webinar. It's not free, but there's no travel cost etc so it's a lot less expensive than traveling to a seminar. I'm curious to see how it will work. I have to call in and tune in on the computer both. It's a topic I can really use right now, so I'm looking forward to it. Maybe I should go buy some refreshments.....a little popcorn perhaps?

I stand corrected both theatres were built earlier. Fargo in the early 20s and the Empire in 1919

Good luck Jose!

As opposed to "No, No Nonet" which deals with the trials and tribulations of a chamber music group.

...and we'll all be singing off-stage during various moments.
Better off-stage than off-key!

I love Minneapolis! It was the closest city for us growing up (well Sioux Falls was closer, but I'm talking City here). My family went there several times a year and we took a number of school trips to see shows at the Guthrie or Chanhassan or The Children's Theater. It was great.

I like the restoration of the Fargo Theatre a lot better.

In the Empire pictures, it does not show it but there is a little coffee shop just to the right of the building.

DR Cillaliz - I have done several webinars. The challenge is to keep paying attention. It's tempting to click on another window and check your email or HHW ;).
Being in a cube farm, I could not put my phone on speaker and wished I had a headset. If you have your office to yourself and have a speaker phone, it should be pretty comfy for you.
Let us know how you like the format.
-
Fargo Theatre has a Wurlitzer organ that I have heard several times. It is fun to listen to it.
-
Yes, I can see that would be a problem. I'm really going to try to pay attention, I know quite a bit about the topic, but I learned it before I had actual cases. Now I NEED to know this stuff.
-
It is easy to get distracted during a webinar...

Good luck!

DR JoseSPiano - do you have a real piano in your apartment, or a keyboard with headphones? If the latter, does it have weighted action? Just curious...

Are you sure that's not him over by that bush? From this angle, it sure resembles him...

I'm back from the doctor. Everything went well. He's in a new space in midtown (he had been part of a larger practice in a hospital downtown just blocks from Ground Zero) so instead of going out the door of his office to have my blood drawn I had to leave the building and go to a Duane Reade drugstore on 5th Avenue and 45th Street. A medical lab leases space on the second floor of the drugstore and then they send the results to my doctor. It was the same as doing it in the old building but it was strange to go into a busy drug store to get blood taken and to give a urine sample.
I should know the results of my blood work sometime next week.
-
Growing up in Burbank, CA, there weren't any movie palaces in town. Since it's what's called a "bedroom community," what we had were more like movie split-levels, at best.
-
Are you sure that's not him over by that bush? From this angle, it sure resembles him...
You may very well be right, DR RLP!
-
On the other hand, I did work at the Alex Theater in Glendale, CA, for a while. I was an usher. This was before they boarded the place up, and well before they refurbished the joint so that it could be turned into a fine place for concerts and such.
Back when I was there, the place was a mess. Dingy, grimy, terrible. It's much finer now.
-
Oakland has several other historic theaters.
One is The Paramount (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k49B5PEKLyg), which has been restored and used for special events, such as concerts, ballets and the venue for the now-defunction Oakland Symphony Orchestra (went bankrupt before the 2006-07 season).
The link above is a youtube video showing the outside, some interiors and then part of a concert that was going on when the video was made. It's a magnficent theater.
-
DR singdaw - I have a Kurzweil PC2X to which I added the Orchestral ROM Expansion Board. It's 88-keys with weighted action. I have a small, 40-watt, Peavey Keyboard amp, as well as a nice pair of Sennheiser studio monitors (headphones) for "quiet practice".
-
I enjoyed Chuck last night. It'll be a fun series.
And Heroes follows - two good shows back to back!
But I didn't care for Journeyman. The storytelling was fractured and very hard to follow - and I'm the guy who has to explain plotlines to der Brucer! - and I've a hunch it won't last long.
-
Another historic theater is the Fox Oakland....a longtime target for demolition, it has FINALLY been saved by being placed on the Naitonal Historic Register. Restoration has been, is and will continue to be very costly, but it has several grants and is being renovated to become the future home of the Oakland Center for the Performing Arts.
This LINK (http://www.foxoakland.org/chronology.html) gives a very nice overview of the theater's past and future.
From that link comes THIS (http://www.foxoakland.org/slides/sept_2004/pages/03DSCN6152.html) section on the detail work inside the theater...some of it restored and some it badly in need of restoration.
-
Thanks for the info, DR JoseSPiano! A good artist should have good working conditions. :)

Nothing personal toward you, DR Jennifer, but the thought of seeing any of those "individuals" again is enough to make me retch.
I actually totally get it. I was not a fan of the donatos at all.
But i got to liking zach near the end. And at times i was a fan of eric/jess. And i wanted to hear the kind of callers they would get (especially the donatos).
So these housecalls were quite interesting to me.
The most annoying part was all the the calls to dick and dani were fans of theirs. Every single call!
-
Thanks for the info, DR JoseSPiano! A good artist should have good working conditions. :)
You're welcome, DR singdaw. The one thing I do like about the set-up - even though I always do prefer a real, live piano - is that when I do accompaniment tracks for singers, I'm able to connect my keyboard to my laptop. Since it's a direct line, we don't have to be quiet during the recording. In fact, the singer gets to sing along while I play - which makes the resulting accompaniment track a bit more "live". It also comes in handy for the rare dance rehearsal tracks I've recorded for people since the choreographer can be right there doing the count-offs and tempo changes.
-
And speaking of my keyboard, I guess it's time to go over some of the two songs I'll be playing this afternoon.

Since I've got the late shift at work this evening, der B gets to hog the TV, which would make him happy, but...
Ah, but!
Eight o'clock, he's got Bones and NCIS running opposite each other. Watch one, record the other.
Nine o'clock, things get really complicated. House. The Unit. Maybe The Reaper. And Eureka, for when I get home. Way too much going on all at the same time.
Ten o'clock, more conflicts. Law & Order: Sorta Vaccuous Unit. Maybe Cane. And I get off work at ten-thirty, and I don't walk home at night - that road is too dark and iffy.
And then I get to make dinner!
-
DR SWW - sounds like you need a second DVR!

I don't, but as for der B..... ::)

And ***COPING VIBES*** also to DR Michael S. May your pain be gone SOON.
I believe Michael S and I have entire wings reserved for us at the HAINES HIS WAY Memorial Nursing Home which will be built on the former site of the Acorn Theatre. It was at that spot that the longest running musical in New York history first began its professional run.
-
Gee, those gold lame gentlemen don't look anything like the boys in L. A.

Hmm... Currently, no Amtrak service along the Northeast Corridor due to a traffic accident in Philadelphia. I hope it's cleared up in time for DR Jeanne's journey tomorrow.

Well, I just hope that you mean that the air-rights to the Theatre Row complex have been sold, and that the nursing home will be built on top of the current structure. Especially since the refurbished Theatre Row is only about five years old. Of course, since we're dealing with New York City real estate, well, anything is possible. ;)
-
And as for tomorrow... I'll be in rehearsal from 2:00-5:00... So I'll probably second-act The Brain - I know the writer/director/composer, so I think I should be able to get in. ;) -And then sup with the assembled Hainsies and Kimlets after the show.
-
PLYYYYYYY me the music...!
God love Donna McKechnie.
And now I'm off to work. :-\
Does anyone know when Jason starts rehearsals?
-
And, yes, ~~~~~TRAVEL VIBES~~~~ to DR MusicGuy who should be somewhere in the air between here and Arizona.
-
Does anyone know when Jason starts rehearsals?
Not till sometime in November I believe. It's a two-week rehearsal period, then a couple of weeks on the road (basically the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas).
-
Now, as for the start of rehearsals for playing Tracy Turnblad on the Broadway, well, his people are still talking to their people.
-
Thank you, Jose. So do I! And I hope to meet you, too!
I'm just trying to decide whether to meet you at Penn Station with Levain Cookies in hand or Amy's Bread's Monkey Cake. Or both? ;D
-
I have been to a couple of performances there.
Up uuntil about 15 years ago, I was a regular visitor at the Chanhassen - which had 4 dinner theaters....
Then the original owners sold it, and with the new people it went downhilll from there - as far as I remember. I think one of the 4 theaters was closed for dinners and just did plays, another only had plays intermittently...the quality of both the food and productions did seem to go down after that.
I saw The Foreigner there with an excellent actor named Bob Davis, and loved it. Several others that aren't coming to mind now, but that's the one I really enjoyed and saw several times.
Dakota, have you ever been to the Old Log Theater? They had some good stuff there, too! Again, that's memories of 15 years ago...
-
Well, I've done my bit of practicing... And now I'm wondering just who will be showing up for this audition... I'm sensing that I will probably be a little star-struck this afternoon. :)
-
And, now, do take care of some long overdue tidying up. -Yes, that includes putting away the laundry I did last Friday. :-\

From what I have read, REAPER is considered to be one of the surefire hits of the new season. Almost as big a hit as STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP.
-
TOD - my absolute favorite movie palace is the
Michigan Theater (http://michtheater.org/about.php)
on East Liberty in Ann Arbor. I'm sure I saw many movies there in my 5 years at the University, but the one I remember distinctly is Love Story.
-
And one for Michigan!
-
I was there for The Sword in the Stone (I think that was the movie) back in 1977 followed by the Easter Rockettes show
And I saw THE LOVE BUG and the Easter Pageant in '69 at Radio City Music Hall. No body mikes in those days. Everyone would dance around the stage, and then would gather in groups around the microphones that came up out of the floor to sing.
-
I believe Michael S and I have entire wings reserved for us at the HAINES HIS WAY Memorial Nursing Home which will be built on the former site of the Acorn Theatre.
Save a rocker for me! I'll be out there on the porch, shooting the breeze with ya. ;)

LOL!
In all seriousness, DH Richard and I were just discussing the concept of urban continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs). Our mothers both moved to CCRCs in their early 80s, but they're out in the burbs.
Didn't take me long to find this article from the NY Times:
Retirement Homes Go High-Rise and Urban (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/01/realestate/01nati.html?_r=1&ref=realestate&pagewanted=all&oref=slogin)

I did see THE SOUND OF MUSIC and GONE WITH THE WIND 1968 reissue in movie palaces.
MUSIC was at the Circle Theatre, now the Stephen Hilbert Theatre home of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (three pieces: piano, stool, and cover) and GWTW at the Indiana Theatre an old Paramount Publix palace that is now the home of the Indiana Repertory Theatre (starring whoever is related to or sleeping with whoever is currently the Artistic Director).
-
Thanks to all who contributed to the great photos of the last few days. It has been a wonderful ride.
-
Not sure what I will watching tonight, although THE REAPER looks promising.
-
I agree, DR TCB....I love seeing all the photos!

I hope they let you go into the back to do the urine sample.
And if they don't - I'll bet you would be frequently browsing the aisles of that particular pharmacy! ;)

Time to start getting ready for work...
Do you wear a hat or visor at work?
Does anybody wear a hat to work? :D

When I was growing up in Tacoma, we had four or five downtown theaters where all the first-run movies played. The only one I ever thought of as a movie palace was probably The Temple Theatre. It was built as part of the big Masonic Temple project (hence the name). I don't think, when I was young, I even realized that it was all one building. Now the entire building is the Landmark Convention Center with a grand ballroom, a roof garden ballroom (popular for weddings), a million nocks and cranies, and the main theater.
This photo is from 1932, with the Masonic Temple portion on the left. The glass dome over the box office was destroyed a couple of years later in one of our major earthquakes.
-
I am really enjoying today's TOD and especially all of these grand olde photographs.
Thanks, everyone! :)
-
One thing I loved about the theater was that there were no stairs, it was all ramps which I found to be the height of class to my little-hick mind. This is a photo from the foyer, looking down into the lobby. The area on the left was the concession stand, and above it, was the smoker's lounge.
-
The theater seated 1800 people.

What a great theater!

Wow, singdaw has surpassed me?
I think singdaw's the postingest member ever! (In case you wondered, it's a compliment, kind of like "ginchiest"!)
are you certain you don't mean SNARKIEST?

Well, I just hope that you mean that the air-rights to the Theatre Row complex have been sold, and that the nursing home will be built on top of the current structure. Especially since the refurbished Theatre Row is only about five years old. Of course, since we're dealing with New York City real estate, well, anything is possible. ;)
Sorry, we will just build the nursing home around the existing structures.

The theater that I spent the most time in when I was young was The Proctor Theatre. It was about two blocks from our first place in Tacoma, and maybe a mile from the house where I spent most of my youth. I started out going to the Saturday matinees. When I reached junior high, I switched, along with most of my friends, to the the Friday evening show. It seems like I went every Friday night, although I am sure that I didn't. This was the theater where I almost froze to death standing line for WIZARD OF OZ. This is, also, the theater I went to the night that JFK was assasinated; and also the theater I was trapped in when the Columbus Day wind storm struck Tacoma without warning.
The only picture I could find was this one, when the theater was still called The Blue Mouse. It is called that again now. The photo may be old, but you do get to see Tomovoz's first automobile parked in front.
-
Could that have been THE SLIPPER AND THE ROSE rather than THE SWORD IN THE STONE? I can't imagine Radio City Music Hall playing a 1963 film in 1977, even if it was Disney animated film.
-
are you certain you don't mean SNARKIEST?
THANK YOU, td! Finally....someone who doesn't think it's ME....

YEs, excellent site. I've enjoyed reading what folks have said about my hometown...and I've contributed a few memories, as well.

Did he used to give you rides in it? Or did you have to trudge one mile through the snow to get to the theater?
And what is the "story" abut that Columbus Day wind storm?????

I had a marvelous afternoon of relaxed viewing where I wasn't in a rush to finish anything, and just watched what I wanted.
I began with the new 50th Anniversary DVD of FUNNY FACE (comes out next Tuesday). Those who love the movie will be thrilled with this new transfer. Unlike the last one which was grainy and had excessive edge enhancement and contrast, this is silky smooth with superb color. I noticed only one little color problem and that happened in "He Loves and She Loves" due to that diffusion used to soften the picture. Astaire's sweater right at the end of the number seems to flicker a bit. Otherwise, the DVD handles all the sophisticated lighting amazingly well. That bistro number has all that smoke and many different colored lights, and the DVD was rock solid with all of it.
And I don't have to tell you how the fashion shoot sequence goes: sheer heaven on earth! Is this among the best movie musicals ever made? You bet it is!

Following up on Jose's post, my favorite Karen headline comes from AOL:

Back from a matinee of "The Brain." The audience was quite receptive, and we had an interesting mix of folk: Mr Kevin Spirtas, Jonathan Rayson who was cast as Fred but left the show for surgery, our casting man Michael Cassara, our beautiful blogger Juliana Hansen, Liz Callaway and husband Dan Foster, my friends Cathie and Alice who loved it and lauged at every joke, my best friend from college Matthew, and the wonderful DR Miss Karen. I thought it went quite well, but I'll leave that to BK and Miss Karen.
My date for tomorrow's performance is our DR Jason! I ended up with an extra ticket so I posted a bulletin on MySpace this morning, and Jason's message was waiting for me when I got back.
I turned in the first 120 measures of the Plaza piece, and I've got 170 to write, so I'm off to work.
-
I also watched the two new documentaries on the disc. One was about Givenchy and the other was about how Paris played another main character in the film.
bk will be ecstatic to learn that one of his all-time favorites, Dr. Drew Casper, is one of the two talking heads in the Paris featurette.
-
After I finished with FUNNY FACE, I put in disc four of BONES and watched another episode on it. This was the one which featured murders which were patterned after the murder's in Temperance's best selling book. I remember at the time that I guessed the murderer's identity wrong then, and I didn't remember who it was this time either and geussed wrong again. Excellent episode.
-
When I go back down, I'll be starting on the DVD box set of CRIMINAL MINDS, season 2. That also came today along with CSI: NY, season 3.
-
Topic of the Day: I've never been to a "movie palace," that I know of. And I'd never heard of the term "grindhouse" until the recent movie came out. :-\

I'm heading back down to watch an episode of CRIMINAL MINDS and then last night's CSI: MIAMI.

Did he used to give you rides in it? Or did you have to trudge one mile through the snow to get to the theater?
And what is the "story" abut that Columbus Day wind storm?????
The story sounds a lot more interesting than it is when I retell it; but it was pretty frightening for a 12 year old kid. On Friday, October 12, 1962 there was a big wind storm that had hit Portland, Oregon that afternoon. I remember hearing it being talked about on the evening news while I was eating dinner, but weather forecasting back then was a bit archaic. So, my mom headed off to a meeting at church and I headed to the Proctor to see whatever was on the latest double bill.
About half way through the first feature, the film stopped and all the lights went out, except for the emergency lights. It didn't seem like that big a deal, since the power went out a lot back then. After about five minutes, with lots of whistling and clapping by us; the owner, Mr. Spencer, got up on stage and announced that there was a huge storm outside, that the power would probably remain off all evening, and that no one was allowed to leave the theater until they had contacted their parents on the box office telephone, and had arranged for a ride home.
Well, the word storm didn't sound very scary, but the fact that Mr. Spencer was going to let anyone use the box office telephone meant that we were really in crisis mode. We ran up to the lobby, but the doors were barred and there was already a line at the box office to use the phone. My friends and I ran upstairs to the Men's Room lobby where there windows that looked out on the street. Sure enough, there was the biggest storm I had ever seen raging outside, complete with signs, and limbs of trees, and garbage cans flying down the street.
A little while later, I heard Mr. Spencer calling my name. My mother and her friend had arrived from the canceled church meeting, and had stopped to pick me up. I was released to my mother, although none of my friends were allowed to leave with me because they hadn't yet called their parents. The drive home consisted of dodging downed power lines and falling trees. It seemed like it took forever, even though we were only about a mile from the house.
Sadly (for me), our power was restored by morning, although some of friends from school had to survive for over a week with no power. Although the stories of cold showers in the morning and having to cuddle in bed with your sister at night to stay warm sounded horrible, the idea of barbecue every night for dinner sounded really exciting to me.
Wikidedia has some interesting information on the storm. It was even larger than the storm they called The Perfect Storm. It was also called "The Big Blow" and not because I was in it.

Back from our matinee and having a post-show drink. All those lovely folks elmore mentioned were indeed there, along with Emily Skinner, Scott and Barbara Siegel and others. We had a little less than half-a-house (would have been sold out in most of the smaller venues), but they were a good group. The show was a little low energy for my taste, but a good one nonetheless. A key moving light's bulb was out - I guess it never occurs to anyone to let people know such things so that it can be replaced. It best be by tomorrow's show.
-
Actually neither of the Grindhouse features did well in Europe. The film was pretty much a bust everywhere.
-
DR SWW - sounds like you need a second DVR!
I have a DVR from Comcast that can record two different shows at the same time, and I've seriously been thinking about getting another one. I have a DVR and a plain digital cable box. If I swap the cable box for a DVR, it's only another $5 a month. I can definitely afford that. :)
-
The story sounds a lot more interesting than it is when I retell it;

Now THAT's a story! Thanks for your personal recollections AND the wikipedia link!
-
That's a scary storm story, TCB.
I've been in one Cat 1 hurricane, and we had a microburst overhead last summer. That's the worst I've ever been in.
-
The Webinar was actually pretty cool this afternoon. I just locked the office door, the sound is on the telephone and the powerpoint and handouts are on the computer. You can print them all off and listen. There was even a 30 minute Q and A with some very good questions.
I will definitely do that again
-
I have had 2 conversations on the telephone in Spanish today. They could have gone better, but I think they understood what I was saying. If one of them did she will show up with an interpreter tomorrow afternoon. Since I scheduled her twice and there have been problems, I'm letting her get her own interpreter this time.
-
Time to go home and do laundry and clean in preparation for leaving town. I have a very busy day scheduled here tomorrow. That's a good thing.
-
I'm starving. I'll be heading over to the Brooklyn Diner in about twenty minutes and I'm going to eat large. Maybe even some shared coconut cake.
-
Now THAT's a story! Thanks for your personal recollections AND the wikipedia link!
Thanks, Ron.
Thanks, Laura

I shall now be on my way to sup.

And then it's Elvis in Viva Las Vegas - Ann-Margret, too! And George Sidney.

Will we never get to page twelve?

I've just learned that the conductor for this Plaza Hotel orchestration I'm doing is Paul Gemignani

Ann-Margret gets to sing "Appreciation" which Is missing from the Soundtrack (I think).

Glad to hear about the BRAIN FROM PLANET X performance with sound this afternoon. Maybe by the next one you will have ALL sound AND lights.
Now I want coconut cake.
I shall watch NCIS and THE REAPER tonight. No Ann-Margret for me.
-
Let's see if this exterior shot will work:
Oooooohhh....WONDERFUL photo, Kerry! "The Egyptian" is probably my favorite mid-50s "spectacle" and I'd have LOVED seeing it in this theater!
-
DR TCB thanks for sharing the STORM story. Wow!
For a few years we also had a Jerry Lewis Cinema (now a car repair/sales place using the same building)....that was run by ONE person who sold the tickets and refreshments, and did everything else. The projector was run by electronics, I think....another human job that has disappeared.
-
Wow! What great photos, DR KERRY. Looks like lots of kids on bikes wanted to see THE EGYPTIAN!!!
-
I can not decide what to have for dinner. I am doing my laundry, so tomorrow I can run around after work and pick up cat food, various sundries I need etc.
-
I am intrigued by the Webinar, DR CILLA LIZ....oh yes, I am intrigued.
-
Today I got a $12 haircut. It looks like....a $12 haircut

I am intrigued by the Webinar, DR CILLA LIZ....oh yes, I am intrigued.
I think it was expensive for what it was, but I got to do it in my office and it was on a topic I need right now, so that was cool.

My mom's dad used to say: Save on a haircut - get bit
-
My hair grows very fast, so I really don't mind
-
I did record last night's JOURNEYMAN but not CHUCK. IF they repeat the first show i may try it. But I have DANCING WITH THE STARS on already at that time.
We watched a bit of CHUCK last night. Keith has very little staying power if he doesn't enjoy a show within the first ten minutes. We lasted about 20 before he groaned so loudly I turned it off. It might have improved ???. If it becomes a hit maybe we will check it out again.
-
The good news is in:
Amazon has SHIPPED my "Mickey-Judy" box and it's suppoed to arrive tomorrow via DHL Next Day Service.
Hooray!

A co-worker of mine also said something similar. At lunch, I gently prodded him to learn at which point he'd left the show. He said it was too slow and repetitive (??????) but that he'd switched over to "Dancing With the Stars" about 15 minutes in....BUT, he said he later switched back and watched the last 30 minutes and that it had gotten much better. I filled him in on what he'd missed, and I brought up certain scenes he'd seen, and he started laughing aloud at the memory of them. Turns out, he liked it a whole lot better than he'd thought. Now he can't wait until next week's episode.

Go figure.

In a post or three....

Wow! What great photos, DR KERRY. Looks like lots of kids on bikes wanted to see THE EGYPTIAN!!!
No doubt lured by the publicity for Bella Darvi....

Actually, I believe it was TCB who asked "anniversary" of what.

Oakland's Grand Lake Theater (http://www.renaissancerialto.com/masters/grandl%7E1/GrandHistory.htm) is historic AND active, under private ownership:
Beautiful theater.
-
Since I've got the late shift at work this evening, der B gets to hog the TV, which would make him happy, but...
Ah, but!
Eight o'clock, he's got Bones and NCIS running opposite each other. Watch one, record the other.
Nine o'clock, things get really complicated. House. The Unit. Maybe The Reaper. And Eureka, for when I get home. Way too much going on all at the same time.
The pilot for THE REAPER will be on again Thursday night, the 27th. I'm recording then instead of tonight.
-
TOD - my absolute favorite movie palace is the
Michigan Theater (http://michtheater.org/about.php)
on East Liberty in Ann Arbor. I'm sure I saw many movies there in my 5 years at the University, but the one I remember distinctly is Love Story.
Is this the theater that is now owned by a non-profit group & restored? If not, which theater am I thinking about?
-
I am really enjoying today's TOD and especially all of these grand olde photographs.
Thanks, everyone! :)
Me too :D
-
One thing I loved about the theater was that there were no stairs, it was all ramps which I found to be the height of class to my little-hick mind. This is a photo from the foyer, looking down into the lobby. The area on the left was the concession stand, and above it, was the smoker's lounge.
They were ahead of their time! They had it accessible to the handicapped way back then! ;)
-
Cilla, glad the Webinar work well for you.
We almost moved to Minneapolis. I’m not sorry about that, too cold for me, but I would like to visit it once.
-

;D
Before reading your post, & seeing myself quoted, I made a few corrections-I can tell how tired I am. ;D
SPOILER
I did likethe exciting part with the guy I don't expect to see again. We left shortly after the thief's identity was revealed.
-
JRand, CONGRATULATINS to your parents.
DR elmore, thanks for the Brain report.
Continued working vibes!
TCB growing up in L.A. storms were very exciting. I enjoyed your storm story very much.

Got the sweetest note from Miss Emily Skinner saying she really liked the show and calling it "far and away the best NYMF show I've ever seen." Very nice to come home to that from our lovelier than lovely repast at the Brooklyn Diner. Food was good, and true to my word I ate large, way too large, but I hadn't eaten all day. Cason and Miss Karen had to run off to a NYMF show, and then Alet, Jose, and I stayed for an hour more and, of course, had coconut cake (Alet and I) and lemon merangue pie (Jose). The heat and humidity are way back - very hot and sticky outside. Luckily the breeze from the river is nice and cool.
-
I'm just trying to decide whether to meet you at Penn Station with Levain Cookies in hand or Amy's Bread's Monkey Cake. Or both? ;D
Oh, aren't you sweet! I vote for the Levain, but I thought you'd be in rehearsal.
-
Today I got a $12 haircut. It looks like....a $12 haircut
This cracked me up for a good half hour. And i know exactly what you mean!
-
Iti s intersting to read about all the theatres; I think MusicGuy has played most of them at one time or another (although I'm sure he'd like to forget a few).
So, DRLaura, are we on for Thursday morning to take Sugar for a walk?
-
Bruce, very, very nice.
Jose I have been craving a good lemon meringue pie. I don't like the lemon tart, how was this one?
-
I asked MusicGuy to give all you of you in NY a hug for me, so if doesn't hug you for me, please feel free to remind him.
-
I loved REAPER! I laughed a lot.
And now back to work!
-
This cracked me up for a good half hour. And i know exactly what you mean!
Glad I could make you laugh ;D
-
How long is MusicGuy going to be in New York? Will he still be there on Friday?
-
I thought it would feel strange not to be on the East Coast about now, for the first time in 5 years. And it wouldn't, if all the activities there weren't happening. Such a shame this didn't all happen two years ago. Oh well. At least I can read the details & see the photos from the comfort of my home.
-
I will miss seeing you, Jane. I understand why you aren't coming, but wish you were, all the same.
-
Oh, Pittsburgh was positively brimming with movie palaces as I was growing up. Beautiful downtown Pittsburgh was a twenty mile drive, though, so my family didn't get there often, but, Thanksgiving weekend of 1964, a major treat was taking a streetcar into town from one of the suburban areas (Bloomfield) where we had relatives and free parking to go to The Nixon Theater on Liberty Avenue for an exclusive seating run of MARY POPPINS.
After that, The Nixon truly held a special place in my heart and I saw many first run, road-show engagement films there including THE SOUND OF MUSIC (our seats, as I may have stated as I do on many occasions) were in the top row of the balcony), THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, PATTON and touring companies as well. . .I saw Howard Keel in some salute to the American Musical. . .
Sadly, very sadly, the only photo I could find of The Nixon, is one just before it was about to be demolished:
As well as The Nixon, we had The Stanley, which was home to big band concerts in the 1940s, national tours and films in the 50s, 60s and 70s. The Stanley underwent MAJOR renovation to become The Benedum Center, which houses Pittsburgh's Civic Light Opera season, national tours and special events. Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Conner shared a bill when The Benedum opened, Kenneth Brannagh's HENRY V was the first film shown there and The Benedum can be seen in all its glory in Jeff Goldblum's mockumentary, PITTSBURGH.
We also had The Penn Theater, which is now Heinz Hall, where the symphony plays. Until it became Heinz Hall, unfortunately, it was one of the few theaters in the downtown area which I had never been in. My stongest memory of The Penn, however, is the billboard for CLEOPATRA, which seemed to be omnipresent throughout the Allegheny Valley.
The now defunct - but turned into a shopping arcade, Warner Theater, was still in operation into the late 70s/early 80s and had a humongous Cinerama screen. From HELLO, DOLLY!,PETE N TILLIE on through to GREASE and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, THE EXORCIST, CARRIE. . .oh, my what memories.
Though not a PALACE by any means, the most important movie theater as I was growing up was The Manos Theater, in Tarentum PA - the birthplace of Miss Evelyn Nesbitt - where I first saw MY FAIR LADY (as a reward for a fine report card) and where my Saturday and Sunday pre-teen days were spent with the Hammer horror films, the James Bond double bills, Herman's Hermits' flicks, THE SINGING NUN, the DARK SHADOWS double bill; in other words, a safer, saner world then, when a parent or two, could drop a child off in full knowledge of that child's safety, and trust that the child would be doing exactly what that child said he wanted to.
If I've gone on (and on and on) it's because I found today's topic to be so bittersweet, and I thought that sharing a few of these memories would be a bright spot in a (so-far) very depressing week.
Also, I have a recent photo of The Manos, which is now a real estate office:

DR Kerry, I have an airport run on Thursday morning at 10 a.m.
Unless you want to go after that -- but it will get warm!
I am free tomorrow.

See, that is what made it so classy. Today it would look like it was built to be handicap accessible, but back then it was chic!

How can I have been gone for almost four hours, and when I come back , there are less than two new pages (and I am half of the second one)!
-
Good Evening!
Back from the auditions...
I was booked for two hours, and actually though it would be a full two-hour session from what I was told. Well, we saw one couple, and that was it. I was out of there in 20 minutes. But what a 20 minutes!
I did get star-struck, but not from the people auditioning - I knew them, and have worked with them before. However, the people behind the table were a different matter. Since this turned out to be a final casting session, all the "higher-ups" were there: Walter Bobbie, Rob Fisher, Jack Viertel, Jay Binder. Needless to say, when Rob Fisher came over to the piano to help out with the initial run-through of the songs, I almost got a little finger-tied, but I believe I made a good impression. -And since the lower half of the piano seemed to be having technical/mechanical issues, well... Good for me! :)
-
And back from dinner too...
Yes, we all ate "large".
When we were handed the menus, I kept looking at it... and looking at it. It just looked different, new. Well, then I remembered that the only other times I've eaten at Brooklyn Diner - well at that location - it's been either for breakfast or post-show dessert. So, it was all now - to me, at least! ;)
-
Isn't that interesting! Jose keeps bringing up the coconut cake, but he orders the pie!
DR TCB - Well, the only reason I ordered the lemon meringue pie this time was because it was the only dessert I had not yet tried at the Brooklyn Diner.
Believe it... Or not.
-
DR Jane - The lemon meringue pie at the Brooklyn Pie was good. Not great, but very good. The layer of meringue on top is about eight inches high, and I from what I could tell, they use an "Italian Meringue" since there's no possible way they could have that big a topping of meringue and cook it through - at least to make it "restaurant safe". But it is just too much meringue. And since the meringue is partially cooked before it's browned, there's a hint of caramel in it. Not bad, just not that complementary to the lemon curd. As for the lemon curd layer, it's tart enough, and just sweet enough too. The crust was flaky, if just a bit dense for my tastes.
Alet took a small bite of it... She didn't like it.
-Next time, I think I'll go back to the Chocolate Banana Cream Pie with Candied Hazelnuts. :)
-
Jose, were you star struck today?
You snuck those posts in on me!

Last night's ratings:

Because of the first rehearsal last night, I was only able to watch "Chuck" and "Journeyman." I liked them both, but I liked "Chuck" more. Anyway, I also recorded "Heroes" and the CBS line-up, but haven't watched them yet. Of tonight's shows, I only want to watch "Reaper" and "Boston Legal."
The new season is just starting but starting next week, I'm probably going to have rehearsals every night! What was I thinking?? :o Auditioning for a show when the new TV shows are starting? Where are my priorities??
;)

Just had some "caramelized pear and toasted pecan" ice cream. Just enough fruit to make it healthy.

In between the auditions and dinner, I tried to do some browsing at the Virgin Megastore. Unfortunately, due to a book-signing by Nikki Sixx ???, the whole lower-level of the store was closed off. And it was still closed off when I checked back in after dinner. And the manager had no idea when they would re-open the DVD section. Apparently, Mr. Sixx had taken a break earlier so that he could keep signing copies of his book, "The Heroin Diaries", until everyone who had lined up to see him had gotten their books signed. -And, boy was that quite a line of people! And the staff almost caused a riot when the security detail for Nikki Sixx decided to re-start the line.

OH, the new Haagen-Dazs flavor. :)

And I really do like last year's winner: Sticky Toffee Pudding.

Well, it's time for me to leave work, go home and start some laundry. I need to wash some pants and shirts.
Just had to share. ;)
Until later!

While Googling to find out who Nikki Sixx was, so I didn't have to look stupid and ask; I discovered that Kiefer Sutherland got himself arrested last night.

If you eat it with a spoon, how would you know that it was sticky?

What a silly question - Jose knows sticky!

Don't forget all the calcium in it. It IS a dairy product, after all.

I wasn't in the mood for Viva Las Vegas so I've just been playing on the Internet and listening to beautiful music.

Will we never get to page twelve?
I guess so.

I was able to get quite a bit watched tonight.
I began with two episodes of CRIMINAL MINDS form the second season box set. In the first, the second part of a two part story which was how they ended the first season, a kid was being kept in a room a la THE COLLECTOR. In fact, that book had a lot to do with the solution of the crime.
-
The second episode was dealing with a father who was auctioning off his foster son on the internet. Very creepy. John Rubenstein was the guest star.
-
Next, I quickly skimmed through AS THE WORLD TURNS. Nothing of interest for me today, but the previews for tomorrow do feature Noah, Luke , Maddie, and the Colonel.
-
I watched CSI: MIAMI next. Yep, they've got two guys vying for Calleigh. Ryan is working at a pistol range. Frank Tripp has completely shaved his head. And Horatio has a son he never knew about.
The case was almost secondary to all that drama.
-
BONES had a nice season opener tonight. I was very frightened that Zach (Eric Millegin) had been written off the show (as being in Iraq), but thankfully that wasn't to be. And the episode about cannibals was especially disconcerting.

\That sounds good!

HOUSE had a wonderful surprise ending I did not see coming. And it was so obvious, so I wanted to kick myself for being fooled.
-
Ended the evening with DAMAGES and some surprising events. The promos for this episode featured a surprising encounter between Glenn Close and Ted Danson. In the actual show, those clips were actually from a dream!

Heading down to bed now.
Good night!
