Title: SHORT SHRIFT
Post by: bk on September 26, 2007, 10:11:19 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had both shrift and wind, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - frankly they're giving us short shrift.

And now - Dino at the piano.

Well, I guess it's good that Dino is at the piano, otherwise, since I already played a rehearsal today, I'd have to charge for overtime.

I'm back from a lovelier than lovely day.  It was a day filled with Hainsies and Kimlets.

As previously mentioned, I met DRs MusicGuy and Ben for lunch at East of Eighth down in Chelsea (a.k.a. "Gay Town").  Good food and good company.  -Oh, and I had their "Bluegrass Chicken Salad" (Spicy Chicken (grilled), Pecans, Greens, Fruit (Cantaloupe and Honeydew Melons) & Cornbread Croutons) - very tasty.

Then...

Oh, I found the "review" which is not a professional review but a user review on amazon.  I don't really care that whomever it is doesn't care for it, but my Lord what a pretentiously-written thing it is - if this person used the word "contstruct" one more time I would have thrown up on the floor.  And this person is actually judging the narrative merits based on listening to the CD.  Ultimately, they say they might like it better if they actually saw the show.  It's not the same person as the other reviewer - I read through this person's other reviews, and it is clear what sort of thing he/she likes - when I read the following sentence for example, "I felt J&H had some of the most beautiful and emotive music in all of musical theater " well, I wouldn't expect this person to like The Brain.  He/she sure did like to write, though, as this thing went on and on, basically saying the same thing in five paragraphs that could have been simply stated in one.

It was off to Mary Poppins rehearsal.

Today was "Mary Poppins Boot Camp" day.  Since the girls start on-stage tomorrow with other actors for the first time - the stage manager and resident director have been standing in up until now - today was a big review and clean-up day.  And, boy, did we do a lot of cleaning up and reviewing.  By the end of next week, they will, hopefully, have gone through the whole show with the understudy cast on stage, and then the following week, I believe their put-in rehearsals start.  -They'll run sections of the show in full costume with all the sets and props with the rest of the company.

It was a very productive day.  Alas, there are still two sections of the show that just "refuse" to stick in my brain and in my hands.  -And I had even gotten to the rehearsal space early to review/practice them on my own.  Arrrggghh!  Thankfully(?), they will be running those two sections during tomorrow's rehearsal, but I'm not the pianist on-duty for that, so... However, if I can manage it, I'm gonna sit in and listen and continue to learn.

Then after making a few visits to a few bakeries ;), I headed on over to Theatre Row where I first encountered DR singdaw - who happened to attired in a haineshisway.com polo shirt!  Very smart looking!  -And I never realized it had graphics on the back too.

Once the show got out, we met up with everyone else.  It was great getting to meet DR Jeanne, and DR FJL even stopped by to join us for the post-show meal.

We did indeed dine at the Theatre Row Diner.  And we then did indeed head over to the Brooklyn Diner for dessert.

All I will say about tonight's dining "adventures" is... Well... Once we walked outside and looked into the sky and saw the full moon - or least an almost full moon - it explained a lot.  A LOT!  ;D

After DR MusicGuy hugged everyone before he headed to the subway to take the E train back to Queens, and after we parted ways with the "adults" (DRs Jeanne, Miss Karen and bk), the remaining quartet (DRs Jason, Cason, myself and BJ) headed over to Dave & Buster's for some adult entertainment.  Not that type of adult entertainment, but some good ole games of chance, skee-ball and faux-gambling.  Oh, and Trivia!  One must not forget the Trivia.  *Btw, I was the only who got the Sports question right.  ;)

We had a great time, and once we had maxxed out our PowerCards, we called it a night.

And, yes, pictures were taken.  Stay tuned...

And I took this at the closing performance of the York Theatre's Musicals in Mufti presentation of Zorba:

Front and center are Beth Fowler who played Hortense, John Kander and Joe Stein.  And the lovely Emily Skinner and Jeff McCarthy were also a part of the cast.  Mr. McCarthy played Zorba here, but had made his Broadway debut playing Nikos in the 1983 revival of the show.

As for the Topic of the Day...

The PICCADILLY (http://www.piccadilly.com/) chain of restaurants/cafeterias was/is a favorite of the Simbulan household.  My mom used to work for Custom Management, and Piccadilly used to be one of their "brands" - I think they're their own company now.  In any case, my mom used to get lots of free meal coupons for Piccadilly, and we'd use them.  They also came in handy when I was in college since there were three in Richmond, and it was a relatively nice place to eat out.

Good morning, all!  I worked until 9:30, so I got to bed about an hour later than planned and the alarm rang at 4:15.  I got all of the pages laid out and the last four measures scored last night, so it's time to write the rest of the piece now.

DRs Adriana Patti and Jose, thanks for the photos!  I'll need them next week when I'm going through major "Brain" withdrawal and missing the show and everyone badly.  Luckily, I have an invitation to a Cassie Avate birthday bash next week, so I'll see some of the cast there.

After the show I saw Dan Feyer, the MD for NIGHT OF THE HUNTER in 2004 and MACCABEAT, the Hanukka rock show in the Festival this year.  He's doing a NYMF show from several years ago, YANK, in Brooklyn in October, and our wonderful Private Partz, Chad, is now in the production.

I think everybody ought to get the box, and then we synchronize our watches in each time zone so that everybody here is watching the same Mickey-Judy movie at the same time.

Then we'll all come back here and discuss!

It was most splendid last night seeing DRs JoseSPiano, MusicGuy, FJL, and elmore3003.  DR FJL was surprising composed, considering his opening night is now less than 48 hours away!

Last night was my first time meeting bk and DRs Jeanne, Miss Karen, Cason, Jason, and Brain cast member BJ.  Let me just say: each and every one of them is more warm, genuine, and truly wonderful than you can ever know - if you have not yet met them - even from knowing them from their posting on HHW.  Being here and part of this is truly a blessing.  I feel the same way about the DRs in the first paragraph, too, but I'd already met them previously.

Dinner was wild and wacky.  By the way, thank you, DR MusicGuy!  Is bk always like that, or was it the full moon?  He had the whole table laughing the entire meal.  He sang songs - many of which were made up on the spot - and life was truly a song cue.  bk also did many, many voices.  What a riot.

I can't begin to remember who ordered what.  I do remember that the ranch dressing didn't pass bk's test.  And DR Jeanne ordered a tuna sandwich, much to bk's dismay.

DR Miss Karen made the ultimate sacrifice in reminding me to take  along my goodie bag from DR JoseSPiano [ thank you, DR JoseSPiano!!! ], which I almost left under my seat, and didn't even consider confiscating it for her own self!

DR MusicGuy declined to stand up in the crowded restaurant and shout "UNDERPANTS!", explaining that it just wouldn't have the same effect in New York City - i.e., no one would either notice or care.

The fun continued with dessert - which did not require too much arm-twisting!  Thank you so much, DR Miss Karen!  The coconut cake certainly lived up to its reputation.

I look forward to making more HHW connections over the coming weekend.  And thanks, DR JoseSPiano, for documenting the event and posting the photos, since I stupidly forgot to charge my camera battery!

Trying to consolidate...

DR Matthew, very glad to know that your hearing has been restored.  Most important, especially for a musician!

DR vixmom - your typing was admirable and most commendable
last evening.  :)

DR Edisaurus, I forgot to congratulate you on your new arrival.  It's come to this; the excitement in our lives is a new vacuum cleaner!  I know, I’m a dork.  :)

I just LOVED DD Miss Blue’s smile…thank you, DR JRand57!!!  :)

DR George – very jealous of your 8-Mar-08 “date” with SJS.  Congratulations!  I hear he is a close and personal friend of our very own bk.

DearReaderLaura, DR – I had the same question as several other DRs about your encounter with the fish yesterday.  Lovely photos, though!

DR td – to answer your Judy questions from yesterday – No, No, and Yes.  I read extensively about the Wainwright concerts at the time, and am looking forward to the release of the recording and/or video.

DR Kerry – yes, DR MusicGuy fulfilled your request admirably.

Thursday morning greetings!  It's rainy here in SW Ohio today.

DR Ginny - please let us know that your mother was OK.

DR Singdaw, thanks for asking.  I went directly there from work and could hardly pull up to her garage, for all the telecom trucks and retirement community vehicles.  The problem was, indeed, that they were having difficulties installing the new phone system in that court.  The phones in Apple Ct. had been out since about 2pm Tuesday, which meant that these elderly folks had no way to be contacted nor to contact the outside world for about 36 hours.  As I was leaving, I was about to give a piece of my mind to the retirement community personnel.  But the telecom guy asked Mom to check and there was a dial tone on her phone.  I called it from my cell and heard it ring.

The real irony here is that the closed-circuit TV was telling people to call the main building if they suspected their phones weren't working - DUH!

I was wondering what bk or any DRs think about the practice of actors stopping the show and/or breaking character to deal with audience members whose cell phones ring during a performance.  Is this a deterrent to bad audience behavior?  Does it take the audience out of the theatrical moment MORE than the cell phone does?

I was taught "never break character"-- so if you can let the nit-wit have it while staying in character you might go for it, especially if it's comedy, otherwise on with the show. If you can't do it in character, I'd say it would be more distracting to take on the "phone heckler" -- good question and one a director should decide how he or she would want cast members to handle the situtation ... I don't think there is a deterrent because there are folks who will always forget to turn it off or who just don't care. Our little theatre has the greeter who gives the spill about emergency exits and a turn off your cell phone message is always included...

That's the one I was going to say! I grew up going to the PICCADILLY in San Antonio. Then there was Looby's, I mean Luby's.  And like Mr. Me, my high school cafeteria had the best rolls -- to die for!

I know yesterday was "Ask bk" day, but...

I was wondering what bk or any DRs think about the practice of actors stopping the show and/or breaking character to deal with audience members whose cell phones ring during a performance.  Is this a deterrent to bad audience behavior?  Does it take the audience out of the theatrical moment MORE than the cell phone does?

From personal experience, I have to say it's probably better in a live show for the actors to stop and address the problem.  I can think of nothing that rips me right out of the proceedings than a cell phone...or someone suddenly coughing violently...or a baby crying...or a child whining.  The latter issues are generally short-lived and should be ignored if at all possible.  But with a cell phone, I think it's wholly a different thing.  In addressing this, the audience member has two worries....disturbing the actors and disturbing his fellow viewers, even though the cell phone has pretty much "killed" the on-stage moment.

In movies, I take it upon myself to loudly recriminate any oaf who left his or her cell phone on and is sitting there either ignoring it or fumbling with it.  Heaven forbid anyone actually sit there and talk after answering it. During one movie, a woman pulled out the ringing phone (loudest damn noise I'd ever heard emanate from a cell phone).  She fumbled and fumbled.  She was two rows in front of me.  I finally said, "For the love of God, Lady, turn the damn thing off."
She replied, "It's new and I can't see where the answer button is."

"Then," I suggested, "you'd better take it outside, hadn't you?"

She left, and I got a nice round of applause.

For photos of the world famous Gray Brothers Cafeteria that has been in Mooresville, Indiana, for over 50 years (not at this location) click the link.

It is a nice atmosphere, the portions are generous, but you pay EXTRA for every pat of butter, condiment, or what have you that you add to your tray.

TOD - When I was growing up in Detroit and my grandmother lived in Indianapolis and the interstate highway system was not yet fully developed, we'd drive south on I-75 to Old U. S. 40 and take that west to Indy.  We'd always stop at Miller's Cafeteria in Richmond, Indiana.  The only food memory I have is the cubes of brightly colored Jello, which appealed to me at age 10, before I learned that they're a staple of hospital food.

When in Indianapolis, we took Grandma to Laughner's Cafeteria, where she loved the lemon pie.  One time she said "Where's the lemon?" and sounded just like the old lady in the Wendy's commercial who said "Where's the beef?"

It was in my elementary school cafeteria where I developed my aversion to stewed tomatoes.  They were served in a wax-coated paper cup and I found them disgusting.  Took me years before I could even use them in cooking and I still can't just order them as a side dish  :P.

OH!  I just looked up the info for the show you saw, Petite Rouge: A Cajun Red Riding Hood.  I know that show!  It was done in DC, well, in Bethesda, MD, at one of my old stomping grounds, Imagination Stage/Bethesda Academy for the Performing Arts (BAPA).  And it was written by Joan Cushing who I think still moonlights as "Mrs Foggybottom" - sort of a male counterpart to Mark Russell.

It was indeed Petite Rouge and we both really enjoyed it.  It's a very cute show (the guy who was playing the 'gator - in this story the substitute for the Big Bad Wolf - was so much fun).  The costumes were fantastic, and couple with the lighting they used, it showed you don't have to have big sets to create the world.

Even, in the midst of it being a billed as a children's theatre show, my mom and I had a great time.

DR Matthew - I meant to comment on the restoration of your hearing last night... A small black eraser?!?!?!?!?  WOW!!!

-And that's my comment.  However, it's good to know that you were able to get your problem/mystery solved.

DR Matthew, are you sharpening pencils with your ear?  Stop it.  You will hurt yourself.

I just finished the piece!  I'm taking a minute at the computer before I run down to the copyists.

I'm really sorry  folks here seem to have missed "Life -- one of the finer shows I've seen in recent years.

Damian Lewis is an amazing actor and his character in this show is multi-dimensional, quirky and haunting.

Not your run-of-the-mill show...and there are plenty of cookie-cutter shows out there.

Other than "Life", there was nothing on primetime last night to tempt me in the slightest.

Tonight is a different thing, altogether.  Tonight is "Ugly Betty" and "Smallville".

On "Smallville", we get to see Clark Kent's (aka Kal El's) "bizarro world" counterpart.

It should be f-u-n!

I rewatched Monday's "Heroes" episode last night.  For anyone who has not yet seen it:

SPOILER

I was a bit indifferent to the new story arc of the brother and sister in Honduras trying to escape "Jose Law" and get to the U.S.  The sister does have a devastatingly dangerous power, and the brother is desparately trying to save her.  Perhaps, once they get here, it will interest me more.  The subtitles were a bother.  I know "Heroes" is going to be more "international" this season, but I'm not sure I want to be reading subtitles all season.

Virile Basses

Men with deep voices tend to have more children than those who speak at a higher pitch, scientists say.

Their finding is based on a group of hunter-gatherers in Tanzania known as the Hadza, who can be studied without bias because they use no birth control.

Males who hit lower notes as they talked had about two more children on average than squeaky speakers.

I am so looking forward to seeing as many DRs as possible this weekend, as well as Starfighter, Friends, and Brain.

Hopefully I'll have time for some more posting this evening or tomorrow at work.  In the meantime (all they gave me was that in-between time) let me wish a big HAPPY for all the birthdays I've missed in the last several months.

I saw Lorna Luft's nightclub debut back in 1971 at, I believe, the Fairmont in San Francisco.  She was very good about not discussing her mother during the show; but for her encore she did "Mama a Rainbow" from MINNIE'S BOYS which ended with a soft piano refrain of "Over the Rainbow."  It was very moving.  But I really enjoyed her nightclub act.  I think she is very talented.

I thought Mark Russell was a male!

If you're looking for a "fun" dining experience, I suggest heading down to Korea-Town - W. 32nd Street between 6th and 5th - and try on of the Korean Barbecue places out.  My favorite is Won-Jo (23 W. 32nd) - they still use real charcoal/embers instead of the gas grill tops.  It can get a bit pricey, but most of the entrees are meant for sharing.  -And if you don't feel comfortable cooking the meat yourself, the hostesses will more be than happy to help you out.

There's also a great Korean fried-chicken place, Restaurant Forte Baden Baden (28 W. 32nd - second floor).  It's literally a Korean Beer Garden type of place.  They do serve some traditional Korean dishes, but their fried chicken is amazing (served with deep-fried garlic cloves!) - and their "large" serving is usually enough to feed three to four people.

Hmm.. Maybe I will go to dinner tonight... ;)

Dakota wasn't complaining - she simply requested that he put a spoiler alert at the top of his TV posts, as she tapes some of those shows he mentions to watch later. She included a smiley...

Speaking as someone who reads the last chapter of a mystery novel first, I don't have a problem with spoilers, but that's just me!

Wainwright performs a soaring tribute to Garland

By James Reed, Globe Staff  |  June 16, 2006

NEW YORK -- The novelty of it was undeniable. For two nights, flamboyant pop musician Rufus Wainwright would be re-creating the 1961 concert Judy Garland performed at Carnegie Hall, just eight years before she died of an accidental overdose. The blue ticket stub read ``Rufus Wainwright in Concert," and then right below it: ``Dedicated to Judy Garland."

That was only half of it. Wainwright's concert at Carnegie Hall on Wednesday (and also last night) was not merely a show, but a cultural event that drew a sold-out crowd dotted with celebrities and an audience that held Wainwright in rapturous esteem. If he weren't already so revered, it would have been a star-making moment.

Performing the entire concert, which later became a Grammy-winning album, was a wildly ambitious project, encompassing more than 25 songs, two costume changes (from cream-colored suit to top hat and tails), and peaks and valleys of decadent singing and sentiment.

But Wainwright was up to the task, dusting off these American Songbook chestnuts with verve and an obvious affection for the material. What he lacked in Garland's emotional heft and vocal grandeur, he compensated for with blowsy bravado and a keen understanding that delicious vamping goes a long way. Every toss of his floppy hair and thrust of his hips was in synch with the astounding full orchestra conducted by Stephen Oremus.

Wainwright's reverence for Garland aside, the concert was as much as about Wainwright and his own aspirations. Of course, there was the symbolic importance of a gay performer saluting a pivotal gay icon. Yet this wasn't an evening of reinvention, but rather heartfelt homage, right down to Wainwright forgetting some of the words (as Garland did) on ``You Go to My Head" and resurrecting some of her original stage banter.

His love of Garland, he explained, started with ``The Wizard of Oz," and as a child, his dream was to click his ruby-red slippers just like Dorothy. That was on a good day; on a bad day, he fancied himself the Wicked Witch of the West.

The show also gave Wainwright a chance to explore his range of talents, from sultry jazz singer (perched suggestively in his ``jazz chair," as he called it), to hammy showstopper, to brassy ballad belter. For ``Puttin' on the Ritz," his gleeful smile and enthusiasm made you feel as if he were a child again, performing in the family living room.

And, yes, the night was an absolute scene, from David Byrne seated right beside me to Peter Sarsgaard escorting a very pregnant Maggie Gyllenhaal to the ladies room. Oh, and there was Carson Kressley (surprise!) in a plaid blazer casting his queer eye on a gaggle of men near the stage, and, later, Laurie Anderson (sans Lou Reed), Tony Kushner, and a demure (and also pregnant) Beth Orton quietly leaving the theater. Outside, Sarah Jessica Parker waved to fans from behind her limo as Kristen Johnston stood beside her puffing on a cigarette, and Norah Jones practically went unnoticed as she chatted with friends.

As for the rest of the audience, well, as a friend observed, ``It's the only show I've seen where the line to the men's room is 20 times longer than the one for the ladies' room."

Back to the music. On ``Do It Again," sung in the original key, Wainwright channeled Garland's pathos perfectly, his falsetto rarely touching down and giving every note a cracked vulnerability. Later, in a rare example of surpassing the original version, Wainwright's wrenching take on ``The Man That Got Away" stole the show. ``I'm happy that wasn't the song that got away," Wainwright quipped.

If there was a bigger vamp during the 2 1/2-hour spectacle, it was Wainwright's sister, Martha, who momentarily upstaged him with her guest turn on ``Stormy Weather." Regal in 6-inch heels and a clingy mauve dress, Martha was all 1950s Julie London glamour, with a touch of tear-jerking Edith Piaf.

But then it was back to Rufus, with faithful renditions of ``Rock-a-Bye Your Baby With a Dixie Melody," ``Swanee," and a rousing duet with Lorna Luft, Garland's younger daughter (was Liza busy?), on ``After You've Gone." Wainwright invited his mother, Kate McGarrigle, to accompany him on a soaring ``Over the Rainbow."

``I feel like Celine Dion," she said deadpan as she sat down at the piano, to which Wainwright sighed, ``Oh, mother," as only a mortified child can.

After encores of ``Get Happy" and ``Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye," neither of which appeared on Garland's album, Wainwright soaked up the thunderous applause alone in the spotlight, as his mother stood in the wings dabbing her eyes. It looked like someone finally got his childhood wish.

Hello, HHW!

I got home from NYC about an hour ago. What a GREAT trip! First, the Brain was fabulous. It was so much fun. I envy those of you who are seeing it on Sunday; I'd love to see it again. It's truly infectious. Caution: my face hurt from laughing so much.

Second, but just as wonderful, was meeting so many H/Ks for the first time and seeing others who are old friends. I met Miss Karen, Cason, Jose, Singdaw, Larry, Jason, and FJL, as well as seeing Music Guy again. I must say that all were a delight.

Miss Karen and her clan (Cason and BJ) were just super by putting me up for the night and making me feel very welcome. Jose, of course, as HHW Chief Foodie, supplied monkey cake and Levain--truly addictive--cookies.  I was most impressed by everyone's graciousness and generousity.

All in all, it couldn't have been better. Thank you all!!!

Dialogue: Denys Arcand
By Gregg Kilday

May 25, 2007
A Cannes veteran who has captured the discreet charm of the bourgeoisie in his fest favorites such as "The Decline of the American Empire" and "The Barbarian Invasions," Denys Arcand is presenting his third film in what he considers a trilogy as this year's closing-night film. This time, though, as he focuses on a weary civil servant who retreats into fantasy, Arcand is courting out-and-out laughs rather than just rueful smiles of recognition. Before making the trip to Cannes, Arcand spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about modern life, renaissance fairs and trusting his own sense of humor.

The Hollywood Reporter: How long have you had the idea for "Days of Darkness"?

Denys Arcand: It sort of percolated for about a year. During my last film, "Barbarian," I spent an inordinate amount of time in airplanes and limousines promoting the film, and I was hating it. I started to think, "Is there someone who would like to be in my shoes right now? Is there someone who would like to be interviewed this morning, going to this stupid TV show?" And I started imagining this character, who is someone that no one listens to, not his wife, not his daughters. He is a civil servant, an obscure bureaucrat, and he'd love to be interviewed, love to be alongside movie stars. So slowly this image came of this guy. Once all of that was over, I sat down and wrote the story.

There's another pic which I don't believe is up yet, taken this morning by Miss K. It's really cute. What a treat when someone is able to post it for you all.
Title: Re:SHORT SHRIFT
Post by: François on September 27, 2007, 06:01:19 PM

THR: And you consider this film the final piece in a trilogy that includes "Decline" and "Barbarian Invasions?"

Arcand: Yes, something like that -- sort of a reflection on morals and life in our times. It's my last attempt at such a description. You see a brief appearance of one the characters in "Decline" and in "Barbarian Invasions." There is only one character who is carried over into this film this time.

THR: It's also described as much more farcical.

Arcand: It is, but at the same time, it's darker. I would say it's a more extreme film. It's funnier and darker than the two previous ones.

THR: Working in comedy, did you make any adjustments on the set?

Arcand: I didn't make any adjustments. It just came to me that way. How and when, I don't know. I got carried away. At some point, this guy gets involved with a woman who takes part in these renaissance fairs. You've seen them in the U.S. They are fairly popular. He gets caught in this, and getting caught in it, it becomes extremely farcical. There are pratfalls and stuff like that -- slapstick-type stuff, which is something I always loved in other films but was never able to do myself. So I tried it and I hope it works.

OK.. Time to change into my pit blacks.

Laters...

We're back to AGYG this eve.  Not really motivated to go.  But to comment on pit black, I am wearing that this eve, which is a switch from last week when we were encouraged to dress up as the "Cowboy Band".  I did that for a few performances until the reed player behind complained about my hat.  So now, I'm not going to bother.  Maybe I'll wear a red kercheif around my neck.  I didn't even wear the cowboy boots today.

I am excited to be able to hear different things in the pit tonight.  Now that the ear is cleaned out and free of foreign objects (Thanks to all of you for the kind words and vibes) I'm able to hear things clearer now.  So, that will be exciting!
Title: Re:SHORT SHRIFT
Post by: François on September 27, 2007, 06:02:34 PM

THR: What was it about renaissance fairs that interests you?

Arcand: The film presents life in our modern city in this day and age as more and more difficult to live. People have problems that are almost insurmountable -- pollution, problems with modern democracy, problems with marriage. My hero is almost submerged by all of this. Some people take refuge, they need to escape somehow. This is a very cinematographic form of escape. You escape to the Middle Ages, not knowing what the Middle Ages were in reality, because I don't think anyone would really want to be in the Middle Ages unless they were the king. Otherwise, it was very rough, very difficult. But so many people are looking for escape that they will try to live a sort of imaginary Middle Age, which is half real Middle Age, half Tolkien, half fantasy.

THR: The film sounds a bit like "The Secret Life of Water Mitty." Did you film actual fantasy sequences?

Arcand: Yes, there are a couple of scenes that are close to that.

THR: Because this is a comedy, did you test it before an audience?

Arcand: No, I didn't. I barely finished this film. We were terribly rushed to get something out for Cannes. I didn't have the time to test it. Also, to me testing is something that you do if you start from a really commercial point of view in a sense that you want to do something to bring in lot of customers and you want to please your customers. I've always done my films starting from a different point of view. I did some tests once for only one film, "Stardom," which was probably the least successful of all my films. I did modify the film myself, the editing, according to a screen test I did in New York City, and I hated myself for it and I still hate it to this day. I liked it, and to hell with the audience. I'm making a statement, trying to be as true as possible to my vision of the world, and I'm not going to be influenced by one audience on one night. Not only that, but audiences change over the years. Some of my earlier films that were not totally understood 10-15 years ago are now understood and appreciated, so how can you account for that? My films cost next to nothing, so as long as the film makes decent money, it pays for itself. I'm not in this to make money, otherwise I'd have another job, especially being a French Canadian.

THR: The movie stars Canadian Marc Lebreche and German star Diane Kruger. How did you go about putting together the cast?

Arcand: We needed a movie star, because the hero imagines himself having an affair with a movie star. Usually my films are devoid of movie stars, so we hired Diane because my producers in Paris knew her and liked her and she agreed to do it. The others are basically unknowns, but fairly good actors, theater actors that I picked in Montreal.
Title: Re:SHORT SHRIFT
Post by: François on September 27, 2007, 06:03:10 PM

THR: You also included pop star Rufus Wainwright.

Arcand: My hero dreams also of being a singer, and when he dreams and sings, he becomes Rufus Wainwright. Rufus opens and closes the film. He basically sings two obscure 18th century opera arias. I always loved his voice. I didn't know him really, but I knew his mother so I had a connection with him and offered him the part and he accepted. He's such a great singer that it really adds something to the film.

THR: You've made many visits to Cannes. Can you encapsulate the experience?

Arcand: Well, it changes through the years. The first few times, I was very young and it was really a party. I spent two weeks in Cannes, having fun, like a gigantic spring break. Then it became more of business, because as the films get bigger and you get a bigger audience, you do promotion and it's not as much fun personally. But frankly, Cannes has always been very, very good to my films. I don't have any horror stories of being whistled down. People have been nice and I've been well received over the years.

THR: Do you expect the experience of bringing the closing night film will be different?

Arcand: I guess they felt a comedy was the right kind of article to program on the last night. There is not the stress of winning or losing. No one is judging you. It's a comfortable spot.

I'm only asking for a little space to separate the details, just in case I don't want to read about a particular show.

Welcome, Sam! Glad you've joined us!

We just had a lovely, lovely dinner with bk, Miss K, Cason and BJ, and yes, Jose, we did go to 44x10. The staff was very nice and accomodating. I believe one of them recognized Cason from THE BRAIN so that seemed to give us some street cred.

I haven't had lobster in several years, but it's one of my favorite foodstuffs, so I had some kind of dish with lobster, sald greeds, grilled asparagus and oranges. Yum! Greg and bk had their stellar friend chicken, (almost as good as Skip's!). Miss K had a salad but that's probably to counteract the influence of The Enabler, and she and Cason shared an enormous bowl of mac and cheese. Greg split his chicken with BJ (there was a lot of it!) and he also had some salad and mac but I did not share my lobster with him!

It was lovely to meet the Murphys in person after corresponding with them, and nice to meet BJ. After looking at the boys on tape so much I felt like I already had met them, but this is a common problem with editors. And of course, bk was as funny and charming as always!

Greg is thinking about The Little Pie Shop or some sort of treat...we're back at the hotel but we should have showed up at Mary Poppins and waited for The Enabler to emerge!

Just as I arrived home I checked my cell messages - had an emergency message to call my general manager.  I did.  At seven-thirty this evening she received a call saying there were serious sound issues again, and it was now each show's repsonsibility to load their show disc, not the NYMF audio guy.  This is all because these lousy mothers got a cheap board that has NO memory and no way to save the show - so the seven shows in the Acorn popped for an external drive to save shows to - only it's causing their loser board to crash and lose everything after each show.  This is horse manure and the fact that NOTHING is EVER NYMF's fault is so damn stupid and annoying and now it's on US to find someone (and no doubt PAY them) to load our final two shows.  Only there IS no one.  My GM is furious and has been screaming at this incompetent who called her and she finally just sicc'd me on the main exec producer of NYMF - she's always stopped me from calling him, but this time she let me loose, and I am here to tell you that when he listens to the two messages I left he will not be happy.  But, why should he be happy when I'm not happy?  I basically threatened to get up and announce to the audience what we've been dealing with and why there will be no reinforced sound during the performance.  I also threatened to go all over the Internet and make it all public.  I'm saving the threat of a tell-all book for when he actually calls back - IF he actually calls back.  I was very strong, and I told him in no uncertain terms that I do NOT want to see the incompetent idiot who called this evening anywhere near the theater, because I will NOT be responsible for my actions if he is.  Unbelievable.

The good thing is I know they know how volatile I am.  My GM and I have a backup plan, which is to use two overhead mics and to get a mix on the band and keep it low enough so that the cast can be heard.  After our problems last Friday and after other shows' probs, they hung two overheads.  These people our finally going to take responsibility for something or I will bring them down in flames, baby, and I'm not kidding.

I applaud you!

I have asked people before to turn off their cell. NDSU requests people to turn off their cells. I know when I went to SPAMALOT this past summer, the ushers actually went to poeple and addressed them directly about their cells sharply.

I am floored, enraged, and spitting mad at the treatment NYMF is giving the shows at THE ACORN.

Now this!!!  Plan B sounds like a good alternative, but WHY should you have to have a PLAN B?

The question about why they get away with stuff like this, I guess, is kind of why Bridal Shoppes continue to exist.....once they have the money - the brides are stuck....NO REFUNDS.....

My guess is that also NOT TOO MANY people return for a second round with them.

I am sending the BEST opening night vibes to DRS FJL and NOEL and SKIP for their shows!!!

I dont mind them at all. I just watch Ugly BEtty and ATWT later at night. Other than that I rather enjoy his insights.

I was just asking for spoilers to be put on ATWT. I do not watch that until after work. They have it on here when I go to work.

Well, apparently my little message worked - our GM just got a call from the head of NYMF (I can't imagine he would have wanted to speak to me) and it all boiled down to his incompetent idiot who called her at seven-thirty giving her incorrect information in just about every way.  The problem, we are now hearing, is NOT loading the show - the problem is that certain shows in the Acorn have cretin sound designers who come in and repatch everything for their show, don't tell anyone their doing so, and therefore the board op doesn't know what's wrong or that the repatching has even occurred.  He has now made it the responsibility of each sound designer to undo their repatching and put the board back EXACTLY as it was.  Since one of the shows in question is Little Egypt and I happen to know those people, I may, in fact, ream them out tomorrow.  They left the theater a mess last Wednesday before our show and they are not playing by the rules.  We, in fact, have been the most exemplary show in the space - always out in time, always clean, NEVER repatching anything.  In any case, I'm told that our audio guy will, in fact, be able to rebuild our show (for the fourth time) and that he will insure that any repatching done will be put back the way it was.
