Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a wild ride, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently eating toad stew.

As for the Topic of the Day...

I've had to deal with some delayed and one or two cancelled flights, but nothing really sticks in my mind as nightmarish.  However, I do remember having to fly out of DCA/Reagan-National a few years ago.  We were starting the domestic leg of the auditions for Universal Studios - the first leg took place in Australia.  In fact, I had to fly on September 11 too.

I was still living in Richmond at the time, so I had planned to get up early, drive to DC, park my car at my parents' house and take the Metro to the airport.  Well, of course, I had stayed up very late the night before packing and getting things ready for my trip - I would be gone for three weeks.  Thankfully, I had had the foresight to request an afternoon flight down to Orlando... When I woke up it was around 10:30 - and my flight was scheduled to leave at 1:30...  Washington-National... And I was still in Richmond.

Needless to say, I was also thankful that everything had been packed the night before.  I gathered everything up, put my bags in the car and started up 95.  It was a very nice day, and there was no traffic.  None at all.  There were a few times when I pushed the speed limit, but I was fine anyway.  I got to the airport about 100 minutes later - it was 100 miles door to door.  Parked the car in the long-term parking lot, and headed for the terminal.  And, I guess because it was a September 11, the plane was almost empty.  Lots of room to spread out.

Whew!

*However, the truly worst part of the trip was when I flew back home from Los Angeles, and had to pay to get my car out of the parking lot after it had been there for 21 days... :-\  -And I also seem to recall that for some reason, I flew back in Dulles, so my sister-in-law picked me up there, and then drove me to DCA to pick my car up.

And as for the best travel experience, well that would have had to  been the flights to and from Australia.  Not only was it my first (and only, so far) time flying to Australis, but it was also my first time flying Business Class.  -And for the 14-hour flight from LAX to Sydney, well, that was truly wonderful.  *And I still remember that it took me a while to realize that the drinks were gratis.  "White wine, please." :)

The return flights were particular nice.  From Syndey to San Francisco, I got sort of upgraded to the "upper deck" where the seats are just two across, and there were only four rows.  It was like our own little private club.  And then after going through customs in San Francisco, and making a brief stop at the United Club to freshen up, I got upgraded to Business Class for the trip from SFO to IAD - the domestic flights were supposed to be in coach.

*And I also had my one carry-on with me that contained 17 pounds of Australian chocolates and other goodies - including Anzac biscuits and Tim-Tams.  And Freddo Frogs!

Emmywatch 2008: Is 'Chuck' too young, too hip?
"Chuck" scored well with both Nielsen families and critics last Monday, coming in second in the competitive early evening time slot and at 74 on Meta Critic. However, Emmy voters might think the spy spoof, created by Josh Schwartz ("The O.C."), too lightweight even for the comedy category.

While veteran actors John Lithgow and Tony Shalhoub won multiple Emmys playing comic oddballs in "3rd Rock from the Sun" and "Monk," Zachary Levi could be considered too young and too hip by those older TV academy voters. But if the show catches on, look for Levi to be a possible nominee at the Golden Globes. After all, the HFPA has always been much more welcoming to TV frosh than the Emmys. And reviews singled out the actor for the lion's share of praise.

USA Today's Robert Bianco said, "everyday superheroes are, of course, a recurring TV fantasy, but seldom has the genre shown as much pluck as 'Chuck,' and seldom has it found a more agreeable hero than Zachary Levi.

Best known for his stint as a snot on 'Less Than Perfect,' Levi needs only a few minutes here to convince you of his wider range and lay claim on breakout stardom."

Most annoying flight related experience was having my luggage locks (the keyed and combination type) being opened and one of the locks being replaced with someone else's lock (and combination!). No doubt it was annoying for the recipient of my lock too!

City May Ban Wallabies After Escape (http://www.foxnews.com/wires/2007Sep17/0,4670,ODDWallabyBan,00.html)

Quote

Monday, September 17, 2007
WICHITA, Kan. —

Wichita city officials may ban wallabies, a miniature kangaroo-like marsupial, from city limits after one of them briefly escaped from its owner.

The development is the latest in the adventures of Skippy, a 10-month-old wallaby who bolted last month from owner Joe Freed's home. His escape prompted news stories and a brief, intense search. He was found 20 hours later a half-block away, where he was trying to get some bread people were tossing to ducks.

Since then, Freed spent $1,000 in attorney's fees but succeeded in beating a city ticket for having an exotic animal.

Wichita's animal ordinance does not address marsupials, but it does say residents are allowed to have "small rodents such as gerbils, rats, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, chinchillas, mink, nutria and similar fur-bearing mammals."

Tammar wallabies, which are native to Australia, are typically less than 18 inches tall and weigh 15 to 20 pounds, about the size of a small dog. They cost between $1,000 and $5,000 each.

Does Australia allow export of Wallabies to private citizens?

der Brucer

NOTE CA is considering lifting the ban on kangaroo leathar items. Hey, the Pope has kangaroo leather shoes.

Tuesday morning greetings!  I slept quite well last night (must have been the Margarita!) and woke up without an alarm at 7am.  DH Richard is down at St. Mary's for morning prayer and I'm about to get myself ready for the day.  We're thinking of taking the hop on/hop off bus tour to Brooklyn today.

TOD - absolute worst travel experience was on a flight back from visiting my mother in Phoenix.  We were on TWA and had a connection in St. Louis.  Our plane was landing side-by-side with another (that's pretty freaky) and, when the time came, the other one touched down and we went back up.  The pilot came on and said, "We're going to try that again" and my DH turned to me and said, "I didn't hear the landing gear come down, did you?"  My vision was that they were foaming the runway and lining up the fire trucks and ambulances for our emergency landing.  Next time around, we landed without incident.

My best flight was in late December 1971, when my parents and I flew to LA to watch Michigan play lose to Stanford in the Rose Bowl.  747s were pretty new then and we had a great time - my dad played the piano in the upstairs lounge for a good bit of the trip.

Good morning, all! I have next to nothing to report, and this is a nice change.  I think I'll run down to Toyland for some Montgomery & Stone research, and then head up to the NYPL.

I've seen no coverage of the Plaza Hotel event but I hope it proceeded nicely. I also hope they pay us all quickly!

My worst flight was in 1979 when I moved to NYC: I had a flight from Dayton OH to Columbus, where I changed flights to New York.  The flight to Cincinnati was several hours late and I landed in Columbus at about the same time the connecting flight left.  By the time I found the gate, I'd missed my flight but my luggage made it.  The airlines sent us all to another flight which ended up at Newark instead of LaGuardia so I ended up in New York with no luggage.  I could buy a toothbrush and toiletries but I ended up wearing the samer clothing for three days before the airlines located my missing luggage and delivered it to me.  They wanted me to come to LaGuardia and pick it up but I told them it wasn't my fault they screwed me up because of delays in their schedule. It didn't bode well for beginning a life in Manhattan, but I guess it all worked out.

TOD:

which of my "favorite" travel experiences would you like to hear?

On my first flight overseas we had stopped in Montreal (from LA) to refuel. One of the engines caught fire just as we were about to take off. I found that rather unsettling, especially because I'd only flown once or twice before--and never over water.

Then there was the business trip to Hawaii to teach a class. I was returning the rental car and about to head home when the rental agency refused to accept the voucher for payment supplied by my company's accounting department. I called the mainland; said accounting department kept insisting that the voucher was good, said rental agency kept insisting it was not. I was caught in the middle and afraid I wouldn't be able to get home. I now have very strong feelings that any organization sending people out on travel should see to that individual's welfare FIRST and deal with the details second. They should also provide a company credit card for emergencies, which they did not. (This was a well-known company that both Der B and I used to work for.)

Then there was the business trip to Europe, which my boss's boss was also on. We arrived at Heathrow. His luggage came right away; mine did not. We waited and waited. He was getting impatient. I finally spotted it, grabbed it and we were off--only to find, once at my hotel, that, although the bag was identical to mine, even down to the scratches, it was not mine. It was also not locked and a piece of paper inside held the name of the owner. Not only did I feel awful about grabbing someone else's luggage, I had no clean clothes and had dinner plans with said mucky-muck. I phoned the airline--TWA, I think--and they reunited both bags with their respective owners the next morning. I went to dinner with only a shower and no clean clothes. But with patience it was resolved.

I knew Zachary Levi was the real deal during those four years on LESS THAN PERFECT. Yep, he played a snotty schemer, but there was always a hint of humanity behind his plotting, and he could easily register a rather touching disappointment when his plans went awry as they always did. I found him a likeable louse on the show, and on CHUCK, I just find him likeable.

Keeping my fingers crossed for continued success of the show.

I forgot to mention this last night, but because I had about 30 minutes last night before the start of prime time, I put in HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE to see how it would look upconverted to 1080p on my new TV.

Suffice to say I was bowled over by the image, and now I am re-thinking buying the previous four POTTER movies on Blu-ray when they come out in December. I may simply spring for the fifth one - ORDER OF THE PHOENIX - and keep the standard definition releases of the previous four movies.

I still have a couple of months before I have to make a decision, but this would save some Christmas money at a time when that would be helpful.

WOD:  when I'd misbehave as a youth, Mom would often say, "Just keep your little cockshut."  Or something like that.

Song o' the day:  My Pacific Pops Choir is currently working up "Twilight Time" as one of their pieces for our upcoming concert (arrangement by moi).  All of our choral pieces have something to do with time this time (it's going to take some, to paraphrase the Carpenters and/or Carole King), including some originals of mine, "Eventually" by said Ms. King, "Time of Our Lives" by Paul Van Dyk (the Jeep commercial song), "Green Leaves of Summer," and more.

Travel:  I believe I already posted here about our nightmarish family "vacation" when I was a child to the semi-lovely Normandy Wilshire Hotel in downtown L.A.  Does the Normandy Wilshire still exist, I wonder?  Best travel:  we had a wonderful trip this year driving down the coast to L.A., then coming up via the Sequoias.

I've caught up on my sleep.

I'm nicely awake.

I've sent DR Noel an e-mail.

I'm heading to work in a little bit.

TOD: There was the time der B and I were coming back from visiting his daughter and clan in Maryland.  We had hit traffic on the drive to the airport (I think it was Philly)so we were running late and der B sent me ahead while he took care of the car.  I boarded the plane.  He still hadn't arrived.  They were getting ready to close the hatch.  He finally comes dashing on board, totally winded.  Turns out, he'd gotten lost.  I don't know what would have happened if he hadn't just made it on time.

Other than that, I've been quite lucky travelling.

Case and I are back safe and sound after a long, long day (and night or make that early AM) of travel yesterday. Since we had such an early flight out of JKF, we just went ahead and checked out of the sublet at midnight and went and camped out at the airport. Sleeping in my own, comfy bed last night was wonderful.

I'm anxiously awaiting the word on what it is, vis a vis EBay, that had you on pins and needles last night.

Were your buying or selling?  Did you win, if the former...or the latter?

Of course, being on pins and needles over eBay is considerable different from being on pins and needles here.

Here, pins are dropped all the time, and some folks needle you mercilessly.!

Good morning! Gosh it was great to read the review of Guch Good Friends!!! Congrats to the brainiac Noel.

I have had many a hell-acious trip - especially in the past few years, when minor illegal alien nitwits got a taste of power as "security" (yeah, right) personnel at airport check points. Going into any detail at all would cause an adrenaline blast that could actually wreck this lovely beginning to a lovely day... so I'll pass, thanks, on the history.

I got a nice gig editing a friend's book - tomorrow evening I'll be meeting with her (not at her LA apartment, because parking is terrible there) on her 74-foot yacht in the marina. Swell boat, I tell ya - I got to go out on it for its first LA marina pleasure jaunt, back in June when the happy couple first took possession. A beaut!! Boy, rich or poor, there's nothing like MONEY!!!

Today, I'm going to head over to the Getty and walk through the gardens... maybe even pop inside one of the buildings and actually look at some art... but it is the amazing all-season garden I really crave.

I enjoyed the show. But i wouldn't say that i loved it.

Although the fact that they focused so much on my 3 favorites (claire, hiro and peter) was great.

I find myself totally interested whenever claire is on. Same with peter. I will say i found myself a little bit less interested in the hiro storyline. but mostly because it was so far in the past and so seemingly non-related to anything else on the show.

I still dislike the new brother/sister. I wish we didn't have to see them so much.

I loved loved loved who Mohinder found it haiti. So perfect and so unexpected. I loved it!

I'm liking claire's dad and how he relates to mohinder.

I'm even liking matt and grandma petrelli.

Not liking nathan this way. Hopefully he will shape up soon.

But what is with no niki for 2 shows. Not that i like her. But i love her kid and want to see him.

Hiya, Singdaw! Glad you like it!!! Almost all of it is true, for someone. Actually, I have never been to Asia - that trip did actually happen, but not to me. I have never been a spy, but i dreamed of it - actually thought of applying to the CIA, once, but by then, i was over the age limit for recruits.... Some of the backstage shenanigans are absolutely true - but happened with other people (and were whispered and snickered about by all and sundry). The G & S thing was TRUE!!! Except that my debut role there was Iolanthe. And, yes, the "leaving New York" eleventh hour phone call really happened, and i really said, thanks, anyway...

I don't know that i've had any bad flights. But when i travelled more i used to have problems with security.  A few times on flights and a few times on buses to NYC.

Being a 20 something girl (at the time) and travelling alone for some reason made security crazy.

I never had any huge problems.  But it used to really bug me a lot.

I never acted nervous or said anything that i thought seemed particularly awful.  But they would always suggest that i was going to run off to the US to get married (i'm not making this up).

The part that i never got was why they really cared. I mean last time i checked if i went through the proper channels it was not illegal to get married to someone in the US. So i never could understand why they kept saying that.

One time they even pulled me over to the special section where another person has to question you.  The dumbest part was that i was going to visit a canadian friend who was working in the US at the time.

Another time they freaked over a ring i was wearing (they were sure it was an engagement ring).  Last time i checked wearing 4 diamonds in an eternity setting (left for me by my grandmother when she died) was not an engagement ring.

I was totally holding my tongue on all these occasions. But those who know me would know i was dying to just say, "WHY DO YOU PEOPLE CARE??"

TOD:  Worst travel ever -- "might" have been the 36 hours of transit time between Naples, Italy, and Greenville, South Carolina, that I endured in August  1975.

But no...at least I was fed and kept comfortable even with unseemly delays, some due to an international ATC strike.

No, the worst flight debacle I ever experienced was on the final leg of a trip home in December when I was supposed to depart Atlanta on a Delta-contracted flight to Augusta GA.  This was eight or nine years ago.   The terminal for the flight was full of folks, including two captains who worked for the airlines.  After announcements telling us not to worry -- that the flight would be boarding "momentarily" (these announcements coming well after we were to have departed).  Finally, we were told the flight was cancelled.  The airlines was sorry for our inconvenience.

I went up to the counter expecting to hear what they were going to do for us, but I discovered the flight's personnel were departing.

"Wait!" I exclaimed.  "What are you going to do about getting us to Augusta?"

The two people exchanged curious glances and then asked me what I expected.

I said I expected them to attend to assiting all of us in getting connections to Augusta.  I expected them to, at a minimum, arrange for us to have hotel rooms and a meal for the night and a new flight the next day.  I expected to be treated like a valued customer.

The two captains, who were going home to be with their families, joined the fun and said they expected the same thing I did.

We were all given "meal tickets' -- good for $10 worth of grub from any of the airport vendors (which were getting ready to close) -- and asked to remain in the area while they investigated alternate means of transit.

Two hours "after" our flight was to have departed, we were all told we would complete "our flight" on a bus that would leave in "one hour."

This was an evening flight that should have landed in Augusta GA by 9:30 p.m.  We didn't leave the Atlanta terminal until nearly 11 p.m.

The bus, bless its heart, had no heat...and the bathroom had not been serviced/cleaned since its last "trip" to who knows where.  We were given a few cases of cold drinks, too, to tide us over.

We were a motley group.  We got punch drunk.  We laughed a lot.  We got into Augusta at about 1:30 a.m.   We yelled at the bus driver that we wanted to be let out at one of the airline gates so that we could properly arrive at the airport.  Instead, we were dropped off at the main entrance.

It was not a pretty sight, that bunch of us scrambling for our luggage in front of an airport at 1:45 a.m. on a cold December morning.

The next day, I called Delta and demanded that my return flight be modified to eliminate Augusta GA and that horrible Delta connection service and changed to a flight out of Columbia SC.  I did not expect to be charged for it, either.

It worked.  I wasn't charged.  And they flew me first class, to boot.

He was at his second Nelson Eddy/Jeanette MacDonald rehearsal.

However, the Jeanette and the accompanist apparently forgot...
Or else "Nelson" calendarized the wrong date and time.

I don't think so, however.  I gave them 15 minutes, and then I left to accomplish other errands, after leaving a note.

In a way, I was relieved, as with all the HHW activity this past weekend, I hadn't spent too much time doing my "homework."  :)

Nice article in the Times, DR elmore3003.  Too bad they didn't mention more about the musical part of the celebration.

I assume the fire-works were the main-event. That the musical accompaniment was not noted could be a tribute to the creator - setting the stage for others to shine is commendable (but rarely noted),

First, I am not convinced Erin at TVWithoutpity is correct on this issue of who healed whom.  It MAY BE that Kensei self-healed, but a very important point to remember is that both of Hiro's hands were on Kensei's shoulders at the time.

I also did not think Claire's snipping her toe off was cool....I thought it was way gross and ewwwwwww.  I literally held my hands up the moment she got the scissors in position to snip.  I did, however, watch the toe grow back.  Double EWWWW.

Intriguing, however, was learning about the male twin's power to not only soothe his sister and eradicate all that hemorrhaging damage to her eyes, but to also restore life back to the victim whom I believe was dead as a squashed bug before his power took effect.

RE: last night's DANCING WITH THE STARS.

Last week DR Cillaliz asked who my favorites are. I think i know the dancers better now so i can respond.

There are a bunch of female professionals who i am very fond of: julianne, kym, karina. And i also like edyta.

I think so far the best dancer is Helio (with julianne). She is just so fabulous. She knows exactly the right choreography (most of the choreography has been beyond boring these first 2 weeks). I think she really lucked out (again). I think she got one of the strongest dancers.

There are a bunch of others who have a lot of potential. I think wayne newton has little (and cheryl is not my favorite). Same with the billionaire guy (although he does try very hard which i like). I thought cameron mattheson (sp?) would be better. But he has the right build. He's just stiff.

Not sure how i feel about albert (the male model). He does well. But i'm not crazy about his partner. And i'm not sure how much i like his personality.

I think the boxer is good too.

As for the woman, i'm not sure i am fans of any of them. Although i love jane seymour and her attitude. And i think she could get better (although her back issues will always be a problem).

I thought marie osmond also did well last night. Although i don't really think she could ever win.

I felt bad for jennie garth. And i also like her attitude. She did pretty well last night.

Not that crazy about spice girl.

Then we have sabrina (who everyone is oohing and ahhing over). I haven't made my mind up about her. I think she will be around for a while. But since i've never heard of her i wonder how many fans she will have near the end.

SPOILER CONTINUED:

I am not totally convinced that kensei healed himself either. I am going to read some of the posts on that board to see.  Although she is usually correct.

I was also freaked out by claire. I could barely look. So gross.  Although it was interesting that her stalker boyfriend saw it. I wonder if we will ever see her old "friend". I loved that kid.

DR elmore3003 - perhaps DR JoseSPiano should take a look at it, first?  If he can get it going, that might save you a bit of money, for now!

I was planning on buying a new Mac in September but it wasn't possible with estimated taxes and a quarterly health insurance premium.  I've already decided to buy a new Mac this month.

Thanks for the heads up.

Btw, for anyone who is a HEROES fan the forum is extremely cool:

http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/index.php?showtopic=3159725&st=0

I did not get a chance to read it last week. But the people here are very bright. And they always give me lots of insight into things i may not have thought about.

Btw2, DRRonP, every comment i've read has indicated that they believe kensei healed himself.  A few have wondered if he was the first hero.

Also what does grandma petrelli and hiro's dad having had sex mean to the story?

All I can say about air travel is that delay's are beginning to be par-for-the-course.  I can't remember the last time I flew where one of the legs of the trip was delayed..

Never fear - the Government is here to help!

USATODAY (http://www.usatoday.com/travel/flights/2007-09-27-bush-faa_N.htm?csp=34)

Quote
Bush vows action on airline delays, stranded passengers

Acting Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) chief Bobby Sturgell said that within two weeks, regulators will summon airlines to discuss how to reduce flights at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. A rapid increase in flights at Kennedy in recent years has made it one of the most delayed airports in the country.

The problem results in part from airlines scheduling too many flights, Peters said. At Kennedy in August, airlines had scheduled 57 departures between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., when the airport can handle only 44.

Here's a thought - tell the stupid airports not to schedule more departures than they can handle -DUH!

Hello, all! We had a (thankfully) uneventful flight home. I'm sorry to hear about bk's drama. I'm sure I was one of the people he talked to about La Guardia, and I will take 1/3 of the blame, although when bk asked me what airport I was flying from and I said LaGuardia, he said "Oh, I HATE LaGuardia!" I told him I liked it because it was so small and it seemed odd knowing how big NY is. Then he said "Oh. I was thinking of JFK."

So I'm glad you didn't end up at JFK, and made it to your flight!

I've had panic situations where I tell the driver one airport and then midway there start thinking I told him the wrong one and have to dig out my ticket and check. At least in Atlanta, there's only one airport!

We were fortunate to be able to make it back to the Plaza before leaving "the island Manhattan" and I sweet-talked my way into the high security at The Plaza so we could give Elmore, Ginny and Richard a goodbye hug!

I didn't get to hear Elmore's piece in rehearsal but I did hear a few Cole Porter tunes. I can relate to what Elmore was saying about the strings, because I was the orchestra manager for The Atlanta Pops for 10 years and I remember how strident the strings were when they used electronic pickups on the bridge for outdoor concerts and how it crushed the other intruments. It never sounded natural.

Leaving Manhattan, our driver drove around in circles and right past the Plaza even though we told her traffic around there was a zoo. It took us 1/2 hour to even get off of the island and I thought we were going to be late, but we actually arrived at the airport 1 & 1/2 hours before our flight, so all was good.

And we shared the car with a tv producer from a company in Toronto who produces for A&E. She does some show about the last 24 hours in the life of someone famous who has died. Right now they were just finishing up this season's premiere show about Anna Nicole Smith. (Yes, this show has been on for more than one season!) It's part documentary and part drama (probably re-enactment) and the idea sounds like it dumbs down both forms. We also had a nice conversation about lower 5ths, ID bugs, etc.

Her name was Amy, too.

As we flew over Manhattan, we could actually see The Plaza because it was brighter than anything else and had searchlights going. The flight wasn't crowded, it arrived early, and the only thing that could have made it better was if we had been able to see the fireworks from the air.

Here's a picture of Elmore, with his backup band:

I'm thinking it is like HALF A SIXPENCE, where you give the other half of the cookie to someone you love but from whom you will be parted. When you are reunited, you can join the cookie back together.

Of course, by then it would be old and stale, if not moldy.

I'm thinking it is like HALF A SIXPENCE, where you give the other half of the cookie to someone you love but from whom you will be parted. When you are reunited, you can join the cookie back together.

Of course, by then it would be old and stale, if not moldy.

The cookie, that is...

Well... If someone I love gave me a cookie, well... I would just eat it.

I was pleased we at least got four positives to outweigh the three negs and think that at least two of the negs might have not been SO neg if they hadn't been there opening night.  No NYMF show should be reviewed on opening night - it's unfair to everyone, and let me tell you I am not one to stack the audience with people who overreact just because they're friends.  That didn't even happen at our final performance when all you lovely people were there - it was just a nice, real reaction by the entire audience.

I like to read these summaries in case there is something i missed.

In reading this summary there was one thing i had not noticed.  When the warrior guy with hiro had those arrows in his body (that killed him). Did you guys think that he healed himself or that hiro healed him? I thought the latter. But it makes more sense i think if he healed himself.

For what it's worth:

I have yet to see a picture of BJ where he doesn't have food before him.

If Jose is The Enabler, then I think we can dub BJ "The Closer". Any item of food that someone can't finish is passed down the table to BJ, who magically makes it disappear. I think there's one of these in every family...mine was my brother.)

Damn BJ and his hummingbird metabolism!

I hope he doesn't cut off his beautiful hair when he gets home.

They're sort of hard to see in there due to the waxpaper, but they're there.  In the larger box, six each of the Chocolate Chip Walnut and Oatmeal Raisin; in the smaller box, four each of the Dark Chocolate Chocolate Chip, and the Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip.

Chinatown...I like the authenticity, but I usually don't go if I think there will be a long line (and often there is.)

One time I took some friends there before a show that we had tickets for, and it was so good that we all decided to take our time and miss the show!

From bk's notes of yesterday:

Quote
I was praying we’d get through the show with no technical mishaps, but those hopes were dashed with the very first light cue, which came up but didn’t come up because a moving light was not working. The poor actor (BJ) sat there in low blue light doing the opening of the play – ridiculous..
...
A couple of actors changed things that have always worked, and changed them in a way that rendered them completely unfunny – I just scratch my head.

But if you could see it from my eyes…(a Cabaret reference)

An eerie show about invasions from out space opens with a darken stage; a disembodied voice begins the narration and soon the narrator is reveled in fill light and the action begins. Look perfectly natural to me!
The audience around me was having a hard time keeping up with the jokes they got (their laughs got cut short by the fast pacing which soon yielded another yuk. So, missed opportunities were certainly not evident. The play's' pacing was a marvel at NOT milking the gags. (With one very noteworthy exception - Zubrick milked a comic laugh for ever, and ever, and, ever, and ever, and for so long - but it was really funny, because it was the exception and the audience was laughing at the milking!)

Also, different gags for different folks: I didn't react much to lines which were HHW retreads (Who ever felt a wheezey?) but really got a kick out of the Nurse in uniform appearing on stage because I remember when that actually happened for a film showing a child birthing sequence! I chuckled at some lines that maybe were not meant to be that funny - when the General calls on the Battleships for support, my knowledge of California geography made the line hilarious.

I am pretty sure bk had the wrong flag in the rear projection (it was of the Eisenhower era, but presumably before the-1957 Sputnik launch - that being the case, we would have had only 48 states (the last two were added in 1959) Of course it could have been a picture taken in 1960 and used for the show - there would not be too many anal-retentive nitpickers reviewing such stuff for accuracy. Even if I am right, bk could always "gaslight" me and a shoot another picture with a different flag - so I shan't mention it!

der Brucer

Beware - I am planning on some more extensive comments on the show!

Lots of viewing already for me today. I began with two episodes of CSI: NY from the new box set. Both set up Det. Mac Taylor with the new British M.E. (Claire Forlanti plays her), and both had two cases each.

The second episode had an audio commentary by the two writers and the director of the episode. They were honest about the gaffes in the show. (This was the one that had three female criminals dressed as Holy Golightly robbing a jewelry store.)

Next up was last night's HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER. Didn't think it was nearly funny enough. Once again, Marshall's participation was the most amusing thing to me about the episode.

I liked Neil Patrick Harris' cornpone accent when he first started playing a tourist, but then he dropped it. Were the girls realy THAT stupid not to notice the accent was gone? (He picked the accent back up right near the end, but that was even more confusing.)

You can vote on your favorite NYMF show by texting the code of your favorite show to 64641.

For example:

FEST07 THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X
FEST16 THE LAST STARFIGHTER
FEST30 SUCH GOOD FRIENDS

I think you will be charged per message, and they send you a thank you followup, which maybe you have to pay for, too. Perhaps this is why it's sponsored by Verizon!

I also spy DR Singdaw's copy of DR PennyO's book

I had the "healthy" Levain cookie...the oatmeal raisin...YUMMY

TOD. Oh good grief, I have many many flying stories to tell.  When I went to school in Kansas it was less expensive for my parents to put me on a puddle jumper plane than to drive the 8 hours down to get me for breaks and drive the 8 hours home both ways (I didn't have a car). So there were many times we landed in snow storms, rain, wind you name it.   Once I was on a prop plane - one of those 20-30 seaters - and we landed in Fairmont MN after a snow storm at night- we hit the runway very hard and the lights went out in the plane.  The grown man next to me screamed and dug his nails into my arm.   Boy was he embarrassed when the lights came back up

Let's see. There was the ground crew strike at Heathrow when I was on a theater trip to London in high school.  Our flight was delayed 13 hours...one hour at a time.  We obviously missed our connection from JFK to Minneapolis so they rescheduled us on a flight from LaGuardia...we ran out and got in 2 cabs that followed each other very closely, so closely that they had a fended bender with each other when we arrived at LaGuardia.

There was the thunderstorm last summer landing in Orlando. I was listening to the pilot and watching it approach out the window.  When the tower asked if he wanted to be diverted to another airport and the pilot said he "thought" he could make it...well...it was only seconds after we landed that we were pelted with golf ball sized hail and wind so strong I thought we were going to be tipped over...  I remember the pilot stopping immediately on the runway and telling the tower he couldn't see to get to the terminal and the tower saying....oh that's ok, all the runways were already closed anyway.

Hmmm, there are more, many more.  There were lots of times my flights couldn't take off because of heat.  The last time was in Denver and they said they needed people to voluntarily get off the plane because they were over weight for the temperature. I got off of that one quickly....it was an adventure in the airport...that one was fun, never mind.

The only thing I really try to do is get to the airport early.  I figure it's the only thing I can really control in the whole flying experience.  The rest of the time I just hope if things get messed up I'll figure out a way to get a free ticket out of it

There are those,
I suppose
Think we're mad,
Heaven knows
The world has gone to rack and to ruin

What we think is chic
Unique
And quite adorable

They think is odd and
"Sodom and Gomorrah"-ble!

But the fact is,
Everything today is thoroughly modern
Check your personality
Everything today makes yesterday slow
Better face reality

It's not insanity
Says Vanity Fair
In fact, it's stylish to
Raise your skirts and bob your hair

Have you seen the way they kiss in the movies
Isn't it delectable?
Painting lips and pencil lining your brow
Now is quite respectable

Good-bye, good goody girl
I'm changing and how

So beat the drums 'cause here comes
Thoroughly Modern Millie now

For DR scrimshaw:

Ingredients:
1 Chicken, 3 lbs, cut up
2 quarts Water
1 Onion, chopped
2 cups Ham; cooked, cubed
3 Potatoes, diced
2 cans Tomatoes; 16 oz, ea, cut up
10 ounces Lima beans, frozen and thawed
10 ounces Corn; whole kernel, frozen, partially thawed
2 teaspoons Salt
1 teaspoon Sugar
1/4 teaspoon Pepper
1/2 teaspoon Seasoned salt
Instructions:
In a crock pot combine chicken with water, onion, ham, and potatoes. Cook covered on LOW for 4 to 5 hours or until chicken is done. Lift chicken out of pot; remove meat from bones. Return chicken meat to pot. Add tomatoes, beans, corn, salt, seasoned salt, sugar and pepper. Cover and Cook on HIGH 1 hour.

Makes 8 servings.

And Craig's young Romanian girlfriend, along with the cat, breezed through customs.

Another thing I do, singedpaw, is to prepare my chicken and pork separately.

I then get it into the shredded state I like the meat to be, then I mix everything together and let it simmer for a few hours to blend the flavors.

A taste every now and again after three hours lets me know what else I might want to do to it in the way of spicing it up.

Sunday, an 84-year-old little lady, very frail, asked to meet me.  She said the musical was brilliant and thanked me for writing it, telling the story, entertaining her.  You must know from previous dispatches that I’ve long hoped to emulate the sound and feel of Bells Are Ringing, and other Jule Styne scores (one of the rave reviews picked up on this).  This was the show’s second lead, Jean Stapleton.  I told her that in creating my TV star lead, I of course thoughts of all the funniest ladies in the history of television, so, of course, there was a little bit of her in the character.  She looked up at me through these incredibly large glasses and said “That would be an honor.”

I was very touched, thinking that this star of the 1950s certainly had many friends who’d dealt with the blacklist and HUAC.  And it wasn’t until the next day that I remembered: In my research I’d read the harrowing exchange between the HUAC and the star of Bells Are Ringing, Judy Holliday.

Here's a perplexing thing:

There are three Fox musicals coming out in the near future.  Each is listed at $19.98.

Amazon.com has priced "With A Song In My Heart" at $14.98, "Bloodhounds of Broadway" at $14.98, but "The Girl Next Door" is $17.98.  Of the three, it's the lesser known (IMO) and probably the least successful theatrically.

Go figure.

Since we're going on about all the food that was consumed, I'd better get dindin on the table.  Nothing spectacular, just hamburger Stroganoff, but I'd like to get it tabled by the time Eureka has it's season finale tonight.

And I'll be doing a lot of catching up tomorrow.

That's great!  Does it come in a little glass tube?

The one made by Boiron comes in a small plastic tube; Standard Homeopathic used a small glass vial.

Yes, and I had to confess my ignorance...I had to call the store where I purchased it to find out how to get the pills out.  Makes a lot of sense once you've done it, and I love the part about not touching them.  But not having tried homeopathic before, I just didn't know!  :)

Quote
Sunday, an 84-year-old little lady, very frail, asked to meet me.  She said the musical was brilliant and thanked me for writing it, telling the story, entertaining her.  You must know from previous dispatches that I’ve long hoped to emulate the sound and feel of Bells Are Ringing, and other Jule Styne scores (one of the rave reviews picked up on this).  This was the show’s second lead, Jean Stapleton.

Wow... Jean Stapleton! I've never seen her in anything except All in the Family and a Hercule Poirot (where I'm afraid she was miscast as Mrs. Oliver), but I've always liked her as a person.

How rewarding that must have been for you!  Congratulations!

Hi DR Samantha. Are your eyes feeling better tonight?

My eyes aren't as itchy as they were this morning and the swelling is going down VERY slowly. This morning I looked in the mirror and about screamed... My eyes were SOOO swollen I couldn't even open them and they were so red and itchy. I have no idea what on earth triggered this.

Let's see. There was the ground crew strike at Heathrow when I was on a theater trip to London in high school.

I also fell victim to a strike in London...a "go slow strike" by the Gatwick airport workers who check you in at customs. I had been up all night before I left, and was already tired. It took us several hours to get through customs, and there were a lot of people like me who figured they'd make a stop at the loo after they got off the plane. It was hot and some people in line were fainting.

The airport staff sent in some people to give us water. Well, we were all very thirsty but at the same time we had to PEE and there was no restroom before customs! They also sent someone dressed in a clown outfit around to entertain the kids while they waited. Needless to say, we were not amused.

When I finally escaped to the waiting room, my editor friend who had picked me up had already left because they'd told him my plane had cleared an hour ago and he figured I had missed it. And he had driven a long way, so he wasn't home when I called him. I was so upset that the man at the pay phone next to me asked if this had caused me any inconvenience. Well, I won't type my response since this is a family site.

It turned out he was a reporteer for one of the London tabloids and the next day I was in the paper in the story "Go Slow Strike Hits Fly-In Yanks". Since I had flown there from NY (I had been attending the New Music Seminar) I thought that he assumed I was a northerner. My editor friend explained that they call all Americans "yanks".

The reporter offered me a ride into London, but I ended up taking the train and my friend picked me up at the station in London.

I must say that I am on the verge of pulling the plug on our benefit.  Yes, we'd lose a few bucks doing so, but I am now no longer willing to put up with the crap that I'm putting up with by the people at LACC doing the funding.  They are now over two weeks late on our second payment - maybe we'll have it on Monday next, but it could be even a few days after that - that means I miss half our ad deadlines.  Furthermore, the way in which they want to do the final check (our original third invoice was due October 15 - they won't pay the third check until AFTER the show is done) is now, given their reprehensible behavior, unacceptable to me, as I have no confidence whatsoever that they will not take three weeks to process it, and there are a lot of people who must be paid out of the third check.  When we originally went into this, the then-president of the school told me that all invoices and receipts would be needed BUT could be turned in AFTER the performance.  He's gone now and the story has changed - they need all invoices and receipts for the first money spent (this we got them - and had to redo several things to their inane satisfaction) - only THEN do they cut the second check, and they'll not only need all the invoices and receipts for THAT check, but ALSO all the invoices and receipts for - wait for it - money that we won't have spent yet!

I've e-mailed the entire sorry correspondence (I do love my paper trails, and what becomes evident on their end is that they have lied to me from day one of the second invoice being submitted - always telling me the check was on its way when, in fact, it STILL hasn't been processed) to the head of the LACC Foundation and to the head of the Theatre Academy.  The Foundation has a call in to one of the higher ups, and the head of the Academy is going over to talk to them in the morning.  Depending on those conversations and how fast they get me my very late payment will depend on whether I cancel the show, which I'm prepared to do in the morning.

And as for Border's... The new issues of "New York Magazine" ("Mrs. Bill Clinton" is on the cover) and "Time Out New York" (their annual sex issue - with quite an explicit cover), and "Service Included" by Phoebe Damrosch (http://www.phoebedamrosch.com/) - who just happened to be doing a reading and signing there tonight.

Ms. Damrosch was one of the two female "Captains" in the New York City restaurant scene.  She was the Captain at Per Se - which happens to be upstairs from the Border's at the Time-Warner Center.  It's a tell-all book of sorts.  *And every now and then, a couple of her friends from upstairs would pop in and say, "Hi!" during the course of her reading.  I wasn't planning on buying the book, but after hearing her read a few passages from her book, and answer a few questions, well...  And since the crowd was relatively small, she took the time to talk with every one for a bit.  We had a nice chat about "Spectator Dining" and food bloggers.

Evening, All!  DH Richard and I spent close to 6 hours atop 3 different Gray Line double-decker sightseeing busses today.  It all started because our landlord recommended the Brooklyn tour, so we went to South Street Seaport to jump on that.  The agent convinced us that for only $10 more each, we could have a 48 hour pass on all the different routes.  So-o-o-o-o, we went to Brooklyn and back, had a quick lunch at the Seaport, and got on the downtown route intending to take it all the way around and then take the subway home.  We had to change busses at Times Square and had a better tour guide, so decided to stay on.  We got off at Central Park South, walked to Columbus Circle and got a 104 bus up to Artie's Deli for dinner.

There was a Japanese family who came in while I was there.  Mother-Father/Wife-Husband, two-year old son, and Grandmother.  I overheard what they ordered: 2 orders of the Soup Dumplings (one pork, one crab), plus soups for everyone, and one pork, one beef and one seafood dish.  And sure enough, once all the food started to arrive, their reactions were priceless.  A true chorus of "Ooohs" and "Aaahhs" with a touch of surprise.  ;)

*And listening to their two-year old son talk and sing in Japanese was sooooo cute.

Of course, I think you have to get paid before you can write something off, but when The Brain becomes a huge hit on Broadway...

Fortunately, we can write off some of Greg's trip since he actually worked for a day!

Since I don't think we will ever see any profit from S&V or The Internationale, I'm not expecting  one from a doc made by Peter's daughter and shot by us to make a profit. But I do think if we finish it and it turns out well, it can play at every Jewish Film Festival in the country (and there are A LOT of them!).

I'm not sure if I will or not. I did go and check in with the Clerk's Office.

DRs elmore and DerBrucer...

From bk's notes of yesterday:But if you could see it from my eyes…(a Cabaret reference)

Cabaret should be italicized.  And the lyric in Cabaret is, "If you could see her through my eyes."

Quote
An eerie show about invasions from out space opens with a darken stage; a disembodied voice begins the narration and soon the narrator is reveled in fill light and the action begins. Look perfectly natural to me!

"darkened"
"Looked"

Quote
The audience around me was having a hard time keeping up with the jokes they got (their laughs got cut short by the fast pacing which soon yielded another yuk. So, missed opportunities were certainly not evident. The play's' pacing was a marvel at NOT milking the gags.

*The extra apostrophe is not necessary, nor correct.

Shall I continue? ;)

Quote
Beware - I am planning on some more extensive comments on the show!

Yes.  Beware.  ;D

We had a nice sunny day today.  I took Sherlock for a hike in the morning.  In the afternoon we met friends in town & went for a walk with our dogs.  Then we sat outside on the Starbuck’s deck and had drinks.  I also had a tuna sandwich I picked up elsewhere as I hadn’t eaten all day.  The sandwich was very good, with carrots, red peppers & something called veggie pepper.

I have never been on jury duty.  I have only been called a few times & always  had a legitimate reason not to go.  The first time was when Bryan was only a month old, that was almost 31 years ago.  Another time I received a notice as we were moving out of the state.

One bad experience is the heat going out on a Northworst flight in the dead of winter. I was traveling to Seattle in late January 1996. By the time we landed in Mpls from Grand Forks the cabin temp had dropped to freezing and the air temp was -35.

I forgot to add, on the return flight, they overbooked and we had to wait to catch the last flight to Grand Forks. Needless to say, The food between Seattle and Mpls on Northworst left a lot to be desired. I had what was supposed to be a warm sandwich and it was frozen in the middle. The initial flight back to GrandForks was broken down and we had to wait four and a half hours until the next flight. The terminal was freezing and they have almost no seating for the gates going to the smaller airports. Needless to say I am not impressed with northworst.

Another experience was when I went to Boston in 1998. The trip out there was something else....

First my tinwhistles set off the security gate in Grand Forks and I had to unpack and repack everything. I was nearly late for boarding. Then I was sitting behind some odd duck who was farting all the way from FArgo to Minneapolis and I even asked the stewardess if i could move to another seat for the plane was half empty. I nearly passed out from the ODOR and I mean this guy stank. BEfore long the entire plane where I was sitting was complaining and they finally let us move.  Now I really wonder what the heck he had to eat at 530 am taht had him farting that bad. I was really hoping the oxygen masks would fall from the ceiling so I an the other passengers could breathe.

Top that off with an hour delay leaving Mpls for Logan due to a burnt out light bulb. Gotta love northworst...

I've been petitioned to be available for jury duty three times. The first time was for magistrate's court, but I got out of it since it was going to be graduation day for my M.A.

The second time I was given a jury summons number and was told to call the night before to see if I was expected to report. I called, and my number was among those not required to report.

The third time, I did have to report. I sat around all day in a HUGE jury room and was never selected to be on any of the juries called. (I think they called three juries that day.)
