Well, you've read the notes, and can you believe that I'd already used the title My Lids Are Heavy?  Who knew?  And now it is time for you to post until the heavy-lidded cows come home.

TOD:  I have no idea how to estimate #s, but the answer is: too many.  As DR Ron Pulliam has said, I like the idea of owning something so that I can watch/listen whenever the mood strikes me.  But the reality is that most of us have far too little discretionary time to spend on such activities.

TOD

1117 DVD Titles (Where single show box sets, like Buffy Season #1, count as one title)

750 Shows/Classical (Again, titles, not actual disc count)

600+ Pop Music (never been catalogued)

Many DVDs on the "to watch list" (so little viewing time) (The new house has no curtains on the double windows on the main living room wall which makes quality DVD viewing problematic in daylight).

Well this week Mars turns retrograde and we will have a new moon in Libra....meaning get your ducks in a row....but don't do it by yelling at them.

And in the middle of it all Jupiter squares Uranus, making you jumpy   Reassess all changes you have made this summer and move ahead with those you are sure about.  Leave the others behind.

I got to see The Last Starfighter on Saturday and had a wonderful time. My only complaint is one familiar to Bruce. The sound was problematic. At times it was too loud and there was a lot of static at some points, otherwise I really enjoyed the show and got to speak, albeit briefly, with both Fred and Skip and got to say hello to Toby and Dylan. All in all a nice evening.

Good morning, good day.

Check vibes for MR BK....

We saw the preview for THE CAR at the Jerry Lewis Cinema oh so many years ago.  And the audience couldn't stop laughing....by the end of it, you could barely hear the sound because the commotion was so great....I think the biggest response came when someone said:

"The car.....my God....the CAR is in the garage!!!!"

Last night we finally finished our 3rd Levain cookie. They lasted for an entire week! It was the chocolate chocolate chip piece of heaven. What a treat. We had flounder stuffed with crabmeat, fresh steamed green beans and saffron rice for dinner. I had a nice Mandarin Orange herbal iced tea and Anthony had a large glass of water. We then popped the cookie into the microwave for 30 seconds, cut it in half and had our dessert. Wow!

We don't have many DVDs, probably15 total. We do have many CDs, though. Between the two of us we probably have over 300. I know that compared to many of you that's not a lot but for our small space it's more than enough. Most of mine are cast recordings or theatre related though I do have a nice collection of Peter, Paul and Mary and the Chad Mitchell Trio. I also have all the Manhattan Transfer albums on CD and all of Barbara Cook's CD and Nancy LaMott's work.

As for the Topic of the Day...

CDs - 2000?  3000?  Someday I'll get them all back in alphabetical order or some sort too.  And I'd say that my Classical collection still makes up about 60% of my library, with Cast Recordings filling in the next biggest slice on the pie chart.

DVDs - Maybe just around 200-300.  -Which is actually more than I ever thought I'd own, believe it or not.

Good morning, all! I'm tidying the aparment and cleaning off the computer table before the Mac Mechanic shows up at 1 pm to set up the new Mac and get my printer in running order.  Tonight at 6:30 I have a dinner date with Alex Rybeck whom I've not seen socially. except in passing. since March 2006.

I'm currently listening to the soundtrack for THE KING & I: such beautiful orchestrations, and who castTerry Saunders and the singer for Lun-Tha? Dreadful voices!

Beyond that, little to report: a summit meeting on Wednesday at noon, continued Toyland work, and various errands this week.  I had strange dreams last night - back in college, heigh-ho - about several friends (I only rememebr DR Ben and my retired friend Kevin who now lives in Amsterdam) all of whom were looking much younger than they or I do now.  All I remember now is an intense search for a saucepan in the kitchen of the house I was living in.  And, at 4:22 am, I was wide awake for about an hour wondering why I couldn't go back to sleep.

Title: Re:MY LIDS ARE HEAVY PART TWO

I wouldn't have the foggiest idea how many CDs or DVDs I have. I have three rooms filled with DVDs. I have CDs stored in three different rooms, but I have far more DVDs than CDs.

As for how many unheard or unwatched, I probably have 25 CDs I haven't gotten around to listening to yet. I tend to get to them but slowly since I find I don't listen to music nearly as much as I used to.

I have hundreds of unwatched DVDs on my "to-watch" shelf (it's actualy a bookcase that holds them all). I'd like to think that someday I will get to them all, but who knows?

I do know that I buy them because I know that nothing stays in print forever, and if a movie or TV show comes out that I have any interest in watching (and thinking I'll want to rewatch it), then I'll buy it. I'm heartened by the fact that many movies I've always want to have have either come out already or are slated to come out within the next year or two, so I find that I have fewer purchases to make as the years pass.

I got up early enough this morning to get the newspaper read, the dining room cleaned, and I managed to watch an episode of MEDIUM and start another before I came upstairs to start my morning workout.

This was the episode wehre we see the teenaged Alison dreaming about her future self. Quite an interesting twist on the usual storyline, and I enjoyed it.

The critics I've read have said that tonight's CHUCK is the best-yet episode, so I'm encouraged that the show is finally going into "spy" country with Chuck bumbling his way through like a nedry Maxwell Smart. It should be a lot of fun.

Of course, I'll also be watching HEROES and JOURNEYMAN and recording HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER and CSI: MIAMI.

DR MBarnum, the days of plug and play TVs are really gone forever due to the many different sources that folks feed into today's television. Analog and digital signals look very different on new high def sets. DVDs and their high definition counterparts can look wonderful if the DVDs come from quality sourcces and have been mastered properly. On the other hand, just ebcasue it's on DVD does not mean it's going to look great.

The TVs today are so precise that they accentuate the flaws that old analog TVs used to hide with their lower resolution and lack of accurate tuning.

Another note to you, DR MBarnum:

Be careful about buying HDMI cables at a store like Best Buy. They'll want to charge you $60-90 for an HDMI cable.

Go to Wal-Mart or Target and get one there for a much more reasonable price - $10-20. You can buy them over the internet for less than $10. I've never had a problem with the internet HDMI cables that I've bought.

And you DO want HDMI if you can get it for all of your equipment (some older DVD players don't have those connections). HDMI is a pure digital connection, so it's going to give you the purest signal from a digital source. Even componet cables (the red-blue-green ones that give excelent quality) are analog cables which require the TV to do an analog-to-digital conversion before the image can be viewed.

And HDMI also carries audio signals as well as video, so if you aren't plugging into a receiver, the HDMI will give you both picture and sound over one cable. (Of course, you have to go into the setup menu on your cable box and tell it you're sending audio via HDMI).

As for the topic of the day:

I just counted 898 DVDs. However that does not count all of the ones that are boxed up, nor does it take into consideration the hundreds of DVDrs that I own.

Let's just say it is more then I will ever be able to watch. I would say I have watched about 400 or so of them so far.

As for CDs I probably have about 300 and have listened to them all. I play them at work, in the car, or at home while I am puttering around.

And the news is (at least the news as told to me by someone who hopefully knows) part two of the funding check is ready for pickup - since Miss Patti is at LACC in classes, I've called and left a message for her to pick it up.  When she has it in her hands, then I'll feel comfortable that we have it.

Feel better vibers for DR GINNY and DR JEANNE.

No mail......no mail......

I am not sure what an upconvert DVD player is, DR MBARNUM.  I just used a 3 part cable from my Panasonic DVD player to my TV.....and the sound was already into my suround system.

My guess is that your Toshiba has nice sound and you will be fine using it as your audio receiver.

BUT don't get the cables at Best Buy....as DR MATTH says, you can get the same thing for much less at Target or Walmart.  I found mine even at Goodwill for $1.99.....but that was a fluke.  Yes that was a fluke.

DR JRand, an upconvert DVD player evidently makes your regular DVDs look as close to HD quality as is possible...anyway, it improves the picture quality. I may hunt around for one. We shall see.

I need to get over my fear of coffee.

Or, more specifically, my fear of ordering coffee drinks.

Since I don't drink coffee myself, any know nothing about it, I find the infinite varieties scary and the ordering process intimidating.

During lunch today, I was running some errands.  A co-worker casually asked me if I would pick up "a small coffee kulata with sugar but no whipped cream."  Tentatively, I agreed.

I wrote it down.

When I got to the counter, I read my order verbatim from the piece of paper.  The clerk gave me a glance and started to explain something or other about my order.  Honestly, it was all just a babble of words to me.  I just nodded and took what he gave me.

I have yet to hear back from my co-worker whether I ended up getting the right thing or not.

Honestly!    :P

Good Afternoon!

YEAH!  My barber was open today!  However, the owner/manager was not there today, and she's usually the one who answers the phone - so maybe that's why no one answered the phone when I called.  And when I stepped inside, a chair had just freed up, so I was able to sit down right away and have the barber start cutting my hair (1 on the sides, 3 on the top, natural back).  -And with the warmer(!) temps making a return today, the cut came just in time.

Or course, you could have been sent to Starbucks to get a Tall Cafe Americano Half-Caf, No Water, Iced and Dirty.  In other words, a small iced coffee, no additional water, with two additional shots of espresso (one regular, on decaf)... basically espresso poured over ice.  "Filthy" is three additional shots of espresso.  -Or you could also request "doppio" for a double,  triple or quad.

*Although, my favorite thing to order at Starbucks lately has been a Tall Mocha Frappuccino Affogato Style - a Mocha Blended Coffee with a shot of espresso poured on top.  The perfect pick-me-up before or after an afternoon rehearsal or set of auditions.

What's fascinating looking at that list is how many of those shows received almost no publicity whatsoever anywhere.

I'm similarly fascinated.  BK and I had the same P.R. person.  And bassist!  Who heard anything about Virtuosa?  Who knew that nobody did any singing in it, for it was a straight play in which a pianist plays?

I'm sensing some difference of opinion around here about whether being part of the September 12 press event led to more publicity.  The shows participating were Sympathy Jones, Tully (in no particular order), The Yellow Wood, Roller Derby, Such Good Friends, Going Down Swingin', The Angle of the Sun, Love Kills, and Look What a Wonder Jesus Has Done and I'm still wondering whether anyone saw more coverage for Going Down Swingin', Love Kills, and Look What a Wonder Jesus Has Done than Gemini, Austentatious and I See London I See France (The Underpants Musical).

Another really fine point: I'm pretty sure the underwear tuner sold out well before the festival began.

Noel - Why list which shows are world premieres?

Noel is responding to my posted request for a breakdown of "virgin" versus "previously de-flowered" offerings. As a Systems Analyst I often like to look at categorical breakdowns to see whether or not there is any potential significance to be derived.

In this case, we are one invited show away from a perfect 50-50 split between never-produced and brand new offerings, which suggests no bias for or against previously produced shows.

Whether or not NYMF should show such a bias is totally subjective. I suspect the category should be "new works", meaning new to Broadway-Equity audiences.

One could argue that admitting previously preformed shows puts new productions at a disadvantage, but the lack of any previous production also places a healthy production-cost fundraising burden on new shows.

Next year, I'll be directing a new World Premiere musical for NYMF entitled The King and I.

I'm also writing a new musical for NYMF, another World Premiere about a website full of wacky people, three of whom are doing NYMF shows.  I think it will be very amusing, and also quite touching.  There will be comedy (plays on the name Singdaw, spelled backwords words, arch writing), drama (people leaving the board in a huff or, at the very least, a minute and a huff), warmth (people coming back to the board in a huff), romance (two board denizens get married and write a musical about it, which is also done at NYMF - the New York Marriage Festival), lust (certain board members obsessions with a variety of hunks, both Bollywood and other), food (a wonderful number called Amy's Breads will be a highlight, along with Levain Drives Me Insane and the soft-shoe number John's Pizza Never Seats A Party Until Everyone Is There), and every other human emotion.  The set, which will be a whole series of computer screens will be so huge that even though there are strict NYMF and Equity rules, we'll be renting the Music Box for our six performances, doing five previews and not allowing the press in until we feel like it.  Because of the very technical nature of our set and lighting and sound, we'll have a week in the theater to tech.  We'll definitely be part of the big publicity event, and all our shows will be the first to sell out as we will purchase all the tickets and then give them away to family and friends and everyone on facebook.  Our musical director will be dear reader Jose, our casting director will be dear reader Joy (thereby insuring that we will have the best cast), and there will be merriment and mirth and laughter and legs aplenty.  We will be the toast of NYMF and also the croissant of NYMF.  We will be extended by two performances, and we will, I'm quite sure, get excellent reviews except from Duncan Pflaster of broadwayworld, who will say that the entire score plagerizes the first six notes of Glenda's Place from Whoop-Up.  The budget, as per the signed contract, will be $20,000, even though through we will actually be spending $362,015.43.  I'm very excited about it.

*Although, my favorite thing to order at Starbucks lately has been a Tall Mocha Frappuccino Affogato Style - a Mocha Blended Coffee with a shot of espresso poured on top.  The perfect pick-me-up before or after an afternoon rehearsal or set of auditions.

My God! This is as complicated as the HDTV stuff!

One could argue that admitting previously preformed shows puts new productions at a disadvantage, but the lack of any previous production also places a healthy production-cost fundraising burden on new shows.

der Brucer

I think the key word, well phrase that has to be defined is "World Premiere".  Yes, there were some true "first time on stage anywhere" productions in this year's NYMF, but I'm sure that even some of the "world premieres" had been mounted at other venues before they were presented at NYMF.  Those venues were not granted the "right" to call their production a "World Premiere".

When I did Working at Signature Theatre back in 1997, it was the first "major" professional production of the "new" version.  However, when the show was later done up at Long Wharf, that production, if my memory serves me correctly, was listed as the "world premiere" of the new version of the show.  It's all in the contract.  I've attended many a "workshop" of a new piece, but not until those pieces were mounted later on in bigger venues with bigger budgets did those shows make their "World Premiere".

Nope, as highly touted in publicity, the underwear musical sold out two days after the regular tickets went on sale - or maybe it was one day after.

That's what I remember, too.

Tickets went on sale to the general public September 1

The Festival began September 17

Yesterday, it was stated "No NYMF show sold out prior to October 1st."

I hope this ends all the confusion about underwear, which I'm thinking of giving up for Lent.  Who will join me?

Oh... And after Googling, I came across Peter Marks - he was still with the New York Times at that time - review of Signature Theatre's production of Working.  -And I was "reminded" yet again of the some mis-leading, mistaken wording in his review:

Quote
For the original production, Mr. Schaeffer and the composer Stephen Schwartz corralled a stable of Broadway and pop songwriters, from Mary Rodgers to James Taylor, to quilt a patchwork score. This time, they have scaled back ''Working'' to 90 minutes of bittersweet reflection on long-haul ennui, assembly-line drudgery and other humdrum afflictions of living paycheck to paycheck.

Hmm... I don't seem to recall Eric Schaeffer being a part of the original Broadway production.

OK - how than shall we distinguish between SGF (never before staged), BRAIN (never before produced in New York) and TFS (never given a full-equity NYC production)?

(Obviously I prefer "virgin" and "de-flowered" but I suspect the NYMF PR folks would take issue.)

Other than word-smithing for the press, the real issue of previous productions must be: What previous production history would disqualify a show from being part of NYMF?

I started collecting pop music in the second half of the 1950's. My collection of 45 rpm discs covers 1955 - 1975 approx and my CD collection extends this interest back to 1950 (extend back!). Whilst I've updated virtually all my pop music tracks either by purchasing CDs or creating them, I've kept all the 45s.  It's only since the mid 70's that I started my collection of theatre related discs and soundtracks.

It helps that I've only ever lived in three homes in my life.  We've been in this one for 26 years. and the home is certainly large enough (ask Jose) to store the collection.

The DVDs just seem to accumulate. I rarely buy any when they are first issued so it's not really an expense of great magnitude.

DR Matth, do you have a regular DVD player or is it one of those upconvert DVD players.

If it is just a regular DVD player do you stil use an HDMI cord? Or is that cord only for an Upconvert DVD player?

All three of my players that have HDMI connections will upconvert if I choose them to (I do), but they don't have to upconvert. You can tell the player in the set-up menu that you just want it to be a progressive scan player and still run the image through HDMI.

No regular DVD player will upconvert using component (red-blue-green) cables.

I know I need one for the Comcast DVR box, which I can get free (I guess) from Comcast. Or are you talking about the 3 pronged plug in...maybe that is what it was. I am getting my cables crossed.

My cable company would not supply a free HDMI cable. They would supply a free component set of cables, but I had plenty of those already.

Talk of sequels reminds me that when they made a movie of Alan Bennett's play about the monarch who lost the American colonies, "The Madness of George III" the studio insisted on calling it "The Madness of King George" lest anybody believe that you had to have seen "The Madness of George I" and "The Madness of George II" in order to enjoy it.

Well, if you had flashed pictures of your gold lamé boys around town sooner, you probably would have sold out, too!  ;)

I'll drink to that!  I think Steve's gold lames would have brought in a huge number of prime target NYMF audiences.  There were no production photos actually taken, were there?  There was a photographer from Broadwayworld.com at THE TRAGIC & HORRIBLE LIFE OF THE SINGING NUN.

'Damages': Is it endangered?

“Damages” fans waiting for illumination about the murder mystery at the heart of the FX drama are hoping to garner some more clues when the show’s third-to-last episode airs at 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Even though network executives promise there will be a satisfying conclusion to the Patty Hewes-Arthur Frobisher showdown by the end of the season, they can’t say as much about the fate of the series.

Although the intricately plotted legal thriller starring Glenn Close and Ted Danson has gained a passionate following, it has not been as sizable as the cable network had hoped.  By the end of each week, episodes have averaged a cumulative viewership of 4.9 million people, including 2.4 million 18- to 49-year-olds. Live viewing, on which the network bases most of its ad sales, is substantially lower.

DR JoseSPiano - have you ever shopped at the Amish Market on 9th Avenue?  I don't know how their prices are, but they seemed to have a very nice selection of prepared meals as well as fresh produce.

I love the Amish market. When I'm working in NY I often pick up a few items there for lunch. Although it seems pricey, it's still cheaper than going to a restaurant!

I also used to go to the one down by the World Trade Center, but I think that building was another 9/11 casualty.

DR MBarnum, here's td's helpful hint of the day:
Whenever I calibrate my set(s), or re-calibrate, I always pick one specific movie on dvd, a film with a color scheme that is not muted, but vibrant, a look which I would recognize in a minute.  I have never really used the THX Optimizers on Disney and other dvds, since going with a personal favorite has always done the trick for me. Not knowing what is in your dvd library, I can't make the suggestion as to what you should try. . .I know that "The Night They Invented Champagne" sequence in GIGI has been one of my most popular choices: it has vibrant REDS(which I don't want to be tomato soup orange or bleeding), deep BLUES (which I don't want to appear as blacks), rich TEXTURES (which I don't want to lose the detail on), indoor lighting (which should not be 'blooming") and three actors with varying degrees of SKIN TONES.
While you're calibrating, have a pad and pencil handy to write down the settings, then put that paper somewhere where you'll KNOW where it is should you ever have to re-tweak. . .

*And I'm still trying to figure out why there were large groups of school children being chaperoned throughout the Park earlier this afternoon.  I thought NYC schools were out for the day?  Or could these have been groups of kids from daycare?

Well, it seems to me that there is one great irony in the NYMF.  Some shows didn't keep to an even playing field, some weren't allowed in the playground.  Some shows were so new that the ink was still wet, while others were previously written on the Dead Sea Scrolls.  Some shows were the darlings of the press and others couldn't get their names in the Obits.

And finally there was ROLLER DERBY, which broke all the rules, had a theater all to themselves, previewed their show before allowing critics in the door, and spent enough money to finance one day of Mr. Bush's Iraqi war.

Yet when all was said and done, My Friend Filichia selected THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X, THE LAST STARFIGHTER, and SUCH GOOD FRIENDS as three of the very best of the best.  And isn't that the point?

The last three episodes, of course, involved Neve Campbell's ruse to trick Allison into spilling what she knows about the D.A.'s office. I was in agony for Allison during these episodes, and it's not pleasurable reliving them.

I'll be really curious to see where the series goes when it returns in January.

I enjoyed HEROES, too, but I got really irritated at how brief each little segment with a hero was. I longed for them to stay with one of them for more than three minutes before switching to another.  WAY too much jumping back and forth between too brief stories.

Still don't like Alajendro and his sister at all.

And JOURNEYMAN wasn't as involving for me this week as the previous two weeks. John Billingsley was the guest star, and the story was OK but kind of lackluster, especially with the tthreat of the 1989 earthquake looming. Not tension filled enough.

Title: Re:MY LIDS ARE HEAVY PART TWO
Post by: George on October 08, 2007, 09:52:16 PM

Why, yes it is! :D
